Chapter 34All chaptersChapter 36

Verse 1 (padma.5.35.1)

śeṣa uvāca prāpya taṁ vājinaṁ rājā śatrughno rākṣasairhṛtam atyaṁtaṁ harṣamāpede puṣkalena samanvitaḥ

Shesha said: Having recovered that horse, stolen by the rakshasas, King Shatrughna, together with Pushkala, felt exceeding joy.

Verse 2 (padma.5.35.2)

rudhiraiḥ siktagātrāste yodhā lakṣmīnidhistathā raṇotsāhena saṁyuktaṁ praśaśaṁsurmahānṛpam

Those warriors, their limbs drenched in blood, and Lakshmi-nidhi too, praised the great king, filled as he was with battle-zeal.

Verse 3 (padma.5.35.3)

hate tasminmahādaitye vidyunmālini durjaye surāḥ sarve bhayaṁ tyaktvā sukhamāpurmunemahat

With that unconquerable great demon Vidyunmali slain, all the gods, casting off fear, O sage, attained great happiness.

Verse 4 (padma.5.35.4)

nadyastu vimalā jātā ravistu vimalo'bhavat vātā vavuḥ sugaṁdhoda siktā vimalaśuṣmiṇaḥ

The rivers became clear, the sun grew unclouded, and the winds blew pure, fragrant, and moist.

Verse 5 (padma.5.35.5)

sannaddhāste mahāvīrā rathasthā vimalāṁgakāḥ rājānamūcuste sarve jayalakṣmyā samanvitāḥ

Those great heroes, armed, stationed in their chariots, their bodies unblemished, all endowed with the glory of victory, said to the king:

Verse 6 (padma.5.35.6)

vīrā ūcuḥ diṣṭyā hatastvayā daityo vidyunmālī mahāmate yadbhayāttrāsamāpannāḥ surāḥ svargānnirākṛtāḥ

The heroes said: "By good fortune, O one of great wisdom, the demon Vidyunmali has been slain by you — he from fear of whom the gods, terrified, had been driven from heaven.

Verse 7 (padma.5.35.7)

diṣṭyā prāpto mahāvājī raghunāthasya śobhanaḥ diṣṭyā gaṁtāsi sarvatra jayaṁ tu kṣitimaṁḍale

By good fortune, the great and splendid horse of Raghunatha has been recovered. By good fortune, you shall go everywhere to victory across the whole circle of the earth.

Verse 8 (padma.5.35.8)

svāminmuṁcatvimaṁ vāhaṁ manovegaṁ manoramam samayasya vilaṁbo mā bhavatvatra mahāmate

My lord, release this steed, swift as thought, delightful; let there be no delay of time here, O one of great wisdom."

Verse 9 (padma.5.35.9)

śeṣa uvāca iti śrutvā tu tadvākyaṁ vīrāṇāṁ samayocitam sādhu sādhu praśasyaitānmumoca hayasattamam

Shesha said: Hearing these words of the heroes, fitting to the occasion, he praised them, saying "well done, well done," and released the excellent horse.

Verse 10 (padma.5.35.10)

sa muktaścottarāmāśāṁ babhrāmātha surakṣitaḥ rathapattihayaśreṣṭhaiḥ sarvaśastrāstrakovidaiḥ

Set free, it then wandered toward the northern direction, well guarded by excellent charioteers, foot-soldiers, and horsemen, all skilled in every weapon.

Verse 11 (padma.5.35.11)

tatra yadvṛttametasya śatrughnasya manoharam vātsyāyana śṛṇuṣvaitatpāparāśipradāhakam

O Vatsyayana, listen now to what happened there, delightful, concerning this Shatrughna — an account that burns away a whole mass of sin.

Verse 12 (padma.5.35.12)

revātīramatha prāpto munivṛṁdaniṣevitam nīlaratnasamūhasya rasaḥ kiṁ tu payo miṣāt

He came then to the banks of the Reva, frequented by throngs of sages — was it the essence of a mass of blue gems, or merely water in disguise?

Verse 13 (padma.5.35.13)

tāṁstānmunivarānsarvānpraṇamañchūrasevitaḥ jagāma hayaratnasya pṛṣṭhataḥ kāmagāminaḥ

Bowing to all those excellent sages, that hero, attended by warriors, went on, following behind that jewel of horses which moved as it willed.

Verse 14 (padma.5.35.14)

gacchaṁstatrāśramaṁ jīrṇaṁ palāśaparṇanirmitam revāyājalakallolaiḥ siktaṁ pāpaharāśrayam

Going on, he came to an old hermitage there, made of palasha leaves, sprinkled by the waves of the Reva's waters, an abode that removes sin.

Verse 15 (padma.5.35.15)

taṁ dṛṣṭvā sumatiṁ prāha sarvajñaṁ nayakovidam śatrughnaḥ sarvadharmārthakarmakartavyakovidaḥ

Seeing it, Shatrughna, skilled in every duty of dharma, artha, and karma, said to the all-knowing, policy-skilled Sumati:

Verse 16 (padma.5.35.16)

rājovāca maṁtrinkathaya kasyāyamāśramaḥ puṇyadarśanaḥ vicāracaturaśreṣṭha vadaitanmama pṛcchataḥ

The king said: "O minister, tell me — whose is this hermitage, so blessed to behold? O best of the discerning, tell this to me, who ask."

Verse 17 (padma.5.35.17)

śeṣa uvāca iti vākyaṁ samākarṇya sumatiḥ prāha taṁ nṛpam viśada smerayā vācā darśayannātmasauhṛdam

Shesha said: Hearing these words, Sumati spoke to that king, with a clear, smiling voice, showing his own affection.

Verse 18 (padma.5.35.18)

sumatiruvāca enaṁ dṛṣṭvā mahārāja dhūtapāpā vayaṁ khalu bhaviṣyāmo muniśreṣṭhaṁ sarvaśāstraparāyaṇam

Sumati said: "Seeing him, great king, we shall indeed have our sins washed away — he is the foremost of sages, wholly devoted to all the scriptures.

Verse 19 (padma.5.35.19)

tasmānnatvā tamāpṛccha sarvaṁ te kathayiṣyati raghunāthapadāṁbhojamakaraṁdāti lolupaḥ

Bowing to him, ask, and he will tell you everything; he is exceedingly eager for the honey of Raghunatha's lotus feet.

Verse 20 (padma.5.35.20)

nāmnā tvāraṇyakaṁ khyātaṁ raghunāthāṁghrisevakam atyugratapasā pūrṇaṁ sarvaśāstrārthakovidam

By name he is known as Aranyaka, a servant of Raghunatha's feet, full of the most intense austerity, skilled in the meaning of all the scriptures."

Verse 21 (padma.5.35.21)

iti śrutvā tu tadvākyaṁ dharmārthparibṛṁhitam jagāma tamatho draṣṭuṁ svalpasevakasaṁyutaḥ

Hearing these words, filled with dharma and meaning, he went then to see him, accompanied by a small retinue of attendants.

Verse 22 (padma.5.35.22)

hanūmānpuṣkalo vīraḥ sumatirmaṁtrisattamaḥ lakṣmīnidhiḥ pratāpāgryaḥ subāhuḥ sumadastathā

Hanuman, the hero Pushkala, Sumati the best of ministers, Lakshmi-nidhi, Pratapagri, Subahu, and Sumada too —

Verse 23 (padma.5.35.23)

etaiḥ parivṛto rājā śatrughnaḥ prāpadāśramam namaskartuṁ dvijavaramāraṇyakamudāradhīḥ

surrounded by these, King Shatrughna, of noble mind, reached the hermitage to bow to the excellent Brahmin Aranyaka.

Verse 24 (padma.5.35.24)

gatvā taṁ tāpasaśreṣṭhaṁ namaskāramathākarot sarvaistaiḥ sahito vīrairvinayānatakaṁdharaiḥ

Going to that foremost of ascetics, he bowed to him, together with all those heroes, their necks bent low in humility.

Verse 25 (padma.5.35.25)

tāndṛṣṭvā sannatānsarvāñchatrughnapramukhānnṛpān arghyapādyādikaṁ cakre phalamūlādibhistadā

Seeing them all bowed low, the kings led by Shatrughna, he then performed the offering of arghya, padya, and the like, together with fruits, roots, and so forth.

Verse 26 (padma.5.35.26)

uvāca tānnṛpānsarvānbhavaṁtaḥ kutra saṁgatāḥ kathamatra samāyātāstatsarvaṁ vadatānaghāḥ

He said to all those kings: "Whence have you gathered? How have you come here? Tell me all this, O sinless ones."

Verse 27 (padma.5.35.27)

tacchrutvā vākyametasya munivaryasya vāḍava sumatiḥ kathayāmāsa vākyaṁ vādavicakṣaṇaḥ

Hearing these words of that excellent sage, O Brahmin, Sumati, skilled in speech, related the matter.

Verse 28 (padma.5.35.28)

sumatiruvāca raghuvaṁśanṛpasyāyamaśvo vai pālyate'khilaiḥ yāgaṁ kariṣyate vīraḥ sarvasaṁbhārasaṁbhṛtam

Sumati said: "This horse of the king of the Raghu dynasty is being protected by all of us; the hero will perform a sacrifice, replete with every provision.

Verse 29 (padma.5.35.29)

tacchrutvā vacanaṁ teṣāṁ jagāda munisattamaḥ daṁtakāṁtyākhilaṁ ghoraṁ tamonirvārayanniva

Hearing their words, the best of sages spoke, as if dispelling all fearsome darkness with the very radiance of his teeth.

Verse 30 (padma.5.35.30)

āraṇyaka uvāca kiṁ yāgairvividhairanyaiḥ sarvasaṁbhārasaṁbhṛtaiḥ svalpapuṇyapradairnūnaṁ kṣayiṣṇupadadātṛbhiḥ

Aranyaka said: "What use are other manifold sacrifices, replete with every provision — indeed granting only slight merit, giving states that are bound to perish?

Verse 31 (padma.5.35.31)

mūḍho loko hariṁ tyaktvā karotyanyasamarcanam raghuvīraṁ ramānāthaṁ sthiraiśvaryapadapradam

The deluded world, abandoning Hari, the hero of the Raghus, the Lord of Lakshmi, who bestows the abiding state of lordship — engages in worshipping something else.

Verse 32 (padma.5.35.32)

yo naraiḥ smṛtamātropi harate pāpaparvatam taṁ muktvā kliśyate mūḍho yāgayogavratādibhiḥ

Him, who, merely remembered by men, takes away even a mountain of sin — abandoning him, the deluded suffer through sacrifices, yoga, vows, and the rest.

Verse 33 (padma.5.35.33)

aho paśyata mūḍhatvaṁ lokānāmativaṁcitam sulabhaṁ rāmabhajanaṁ muktvā durllabhamācaret

Ah, behold the folly of men, so utterly deceived — abandoning the easily attained worship of Rama, they pursue what is hard to attain.

Verse 34 (padma.5.35.34)

sakāmairyogibhirvāpi ciṁtyate kāmavarjitaiḥ apavargapradaṁ nṝṇāṁ smṛtamātrākhilāghaham

He is contemplated both by yogis who have desires and by those free of desire — bestowing liberation upon men, removing all sin by mere remembrance.

Verse 35 (padma.5.35.35)

purāhaṁ tattvavitsāyāṁ jñāninaṁ suvicārayan agamaṁ bahutīrthāni tattvaṁ kopi na me'diśat

Formerly, seeking to become a knower of truth, searching for a wise man, I traveled to many holy places; no one at all showed me the truth.

Verse 36 (padma.5.35.36)

tadaikaṁ hi mahadbhāgyātprāptaṁ vai lomaśaṁ munim svargalokātsamāyātaṁ tīrthayātrācikīrṣayā

Then, by great good fortune, I obtained one sage, Lomasha, who had come from the world of heaven, desiring to undertake a pilgrimage of holy places.

Verse 37 (padma.5.35.37)

tamahaṁ praṇipatyātha paryapṛcchaṁ mahāmunim mahāyuṣaṁ mahāyogisaṁsevitapadadvayam

Bowing to that great sage, of great longevity, whose pair of feet was served by great yogis, I then questioned him.

Verse 38 (padma.5.35.38)

svāminmayādya mānuṣyaṁ prāptamadbhutadurllabham saṁsāraghorajaladhiṁ kiṁ kartavyaṁ titīrṣuṇā

"My lord, I have today obtained this wondrous and rare human birth; what is to be done by one desiring to cross the terrible ocean of samsara?

Verse 39 (padma.5.35.39)

vicārya kathaya tvaṁ tadvrataṁ dānaṁ japo makhaḥ devo vā vidyate yo vai saṁsṛtyaṁbhodhitārakaḥ

Consider and tell me — is it a vow, a gift, japa, a sacrifice, or is there some deity, who might indeed be the one who ferries one across the ocean of samsara?

Verse 40 (padma.5.35.40)

yajjñātvā saṁsṛtiṁ ghorāṁ tarāmi tvatkṛpābdhitaḥ tanme kathaya yogeśa sarvaśāstrārthapāraga

Knowing which, I might cross the dreadful cycle of rebirth, by your ocean of grace — tell me this, O lord of yoga, who has gone to the far shore of the meaning of all the scriptures."

Verse 41 (padma.5.35.41)

iti madvākyamākarṇya jagāda munisattamaḥ śṛṇuṣvaikamanā vipra śraddhayā parayā yutaḥ

Hearing these words of mine, the best of sages said: "Listen, O Brahmin, with a one-pointed mind, endowed with supreme faith.

Verse 42 (padma.5.35.42)

saṁti dānāni tīrthāni vratāni niyamā yamāḥ yogā yajñāstathāneke vartaṁte svargadāyakāḥ

There exist gifts, holy places, vows, disciplines, restraints, and yogas and sacrifices too — many of these exist, granting heaven.

Verse 43 (padma.5.35.43)

paraṁ guhyaṁ pravakṣyāmi sarvapāpapraṇāśanam tacchṛṇuṣva mahābhāga saṁsārāṁbhodhitārakam

But I shall tell you a supreme secret, which destroys all sin — listen to it, O one of great fortune, that which ferries one across the ocean of samsara.

Verse 44 (padma.5.35.44)

nāstikāya na vaktavyaṁ na cā'śraddhālave punaḥ niṁdakāya śaṭhāyāpi na deyaṁ bhaktivairiṇe

It is not to be told to an atheist, nor to a faithless man; nor is it to be given to a slanderer, a rogue, or an enemy of devotion.

Verse 45 (padma.5.35.45)

rāmabhaktāya śāṁtāya kāmakrodhaviyogine vaktavyaṁ sarvaduḥkhasya nāśakārakamuttamam

This, the supreme destroyer of every sorrow, is to be told only to a devotee of Rama, one who is calm, and free from desire and anger.

Verse 46 (padma.5.35.46)

rāmānnāsti paro devo rāmānnāsti paraṁ vratam na hi rāmātparo yogo na hi rāmātparo makhaḥ

There is no god higher than Rama, no vow higher than Rama; there is no yoga higher than Rama, no sacrifice higher than Rama.

Verse 47 (padma.5.35.47)

taṁ smṛtvā caiva japtvā ca pūjayitvā naraḥ param prāpnoti paramāmṛddhimaihikāmuṣmikīṁ tathā

Remembering him, chanting his name, and worshipping that supreme one, a man attains the highest prosperity, both in this world and the next.

Verse 48 (padma.5.35.48)

saṁsmṛto manasā dhyātaḥ sarvakāmaphalapradaḥ dadāti paramāṁ bhaktiṁ saṁsārāṁbhodhitāriṇīm

Remembered, meditated upon in the mind, he grants the fruit of every desire; he bestows supreme devotion, which ferries one across the ocean of samsara.

Verse 49 (padma.5.35.49)

śvapākopi hi saṁsmṛtya rāmaṁ yāti parāṁ gatim ye vedaśāstraniratāstvādṛśāstatra kiṁ punaḥ

Even an outcaste, remembering Rama, attains the supreme goal — what then to speak of those like you, devoted to the Vedas and scriptures?

Verse 50 (padma.5.35.50)

sarveṣāṁ vedaśāstrāṇāṁ rahasyaṁ te prakāśitam samācara tathā tvaṁ vai yathā syātte manīṣitam

The secret of all the Vedas and scriptures has been revealed to you; act accordingly, so that your heart's desire may be fulfilled.

Verse 51 (padma.5.35.51)

eko devo rāmacaṁdro vratamekaṁ tadarcanam maṁtro'pyekaśca tannāma śāstraṁ taddhyeva tatstutiḥ

The one deity is Ramachandra; the one vow is his worship; the one mantra too is his name; that alone is scripture, that alone is praise.

Verse 52 (padma.5.35.52)

tasmātsarvātmanā rāmacaṁdraṁ bhajamanoharam yathā goṣpadavattuccho bhavetsaṁsārasāgaraḥ

Therefore, worship the delightful Ramachandra with your whole being, so that the ocean of samsara may become as trifling as a cow's hoofprint."

Verse 53 (padma.5.35.53)

śrutvā mayā tu tadvākyaṁ punaḥ praśnamakāriṣam kathaṁ vā dhyāyate devaḥ kathaṁ vā pūjyate naraiḥ

Hearing his words, I asked yet again: "How is that god meditated upon, and how is he worshipped by men?

Verse 54 (padma.5.35.54)

kathayasva mahābuddhe sarvajña mama vistarāt yajjñātvāhaṁ kṛtārthaḥ syāṁ trilokyāṁ munisattama

Tell me this in detail, O great in wisdom, O omniscient one, O best of sages — knowing which I may become fulfilled in all the three worlds."

Verse 55 (padma.5.35.55)

etacchrutvā tu madvākyaṁ vicārya sa tu lomaśaḥ kathayāmāsa me sarvaṁ rāmadhyānapuraḥsaram

Hearing this word of mine, that Lomasha, having reflected, related everything to me, beginning with the meditation on Rama.

Verse 56 (padma.5.35.56)

śṛṇu vipreṁdra vakṣyāmi yatpṛṣṭaṁ tu tvayānagha yathā tuṣyedramānāthaḥ saṁsārajvaradāhakaḥ

"Listen, O foremost of Brahmins, sinless one, I shall tell you what you have asked, that the Lord of Lakshmi, who burns away the fever of samsara, may be pleased.

Verse 57 (padma.5.35.57)

ayodhyānagare ramye citramaṁḍapaśobhite dhyāyetkalpatarormūle sarvakāmasamṛddhide

In the beautiful city of Ayodhya, resplendent with wondrous pavilions, one should meditate at the foot of the wish-fulfilling tree, which grants abundance of every desire —

Verse 58 (padma.5.35.58)

mahāmarakatasvarṇanīlaratnādiśobhitam siṁhāsanaṁ cittaharaṁ kāṁtyā tāmisranāśanam

upon a throne resplendent with great emeralds, gold, sapphires, and other jewels, captivating the mind, whose splendor destroys darkness,

Verse 59 (padma.5.35.59)
