The Defeat of Vidyunmali

Chapter 33All chaptersChapter 35

Verse 1 (padma.5.34.1)

śeṣa uvāca rathaiḥ sadaśvaiḥ śobhāḍhyaiḥ sarvaśastrāstrapūritaiḥ nānāratnasamāyuktairyayuste rākṣasādhamam

Shesha said: With chariots resplendent with fine horses, filled with every weapon and missile, adorned with manifold jewels, they went against that vilest of rakshasas.

Verse 2 (padma.5.34.2)

tāndṛṣṭvā kāmage yāne sthitaḥ provāca rākṣasaḥ meghagaṁbhīrayā vācā tarjayanniva bhūriśaḥ

Seeing them, the rakshasa, standing in his chariot that moved at will, spoke, with a voice deep as thunderclouds, as if repeatedly threatening them:

Verse 3 (padma.5.34.3)

māyāṁ tu subhaṭā yoddhuṁ gacchaṁtu nijamaṁdiram mā tyajaṁtu svakānprāṇānna mokṣye vājinaṁ varam

"Let the fine warriors, if they mean to fight me, go instead to their own homes; let them not throw away their lives — I will not release this excellent horse.

Verse 4 (padma.5.34.4)

vidyunmālīti vikhyāto rāvaṇasya suhṛtsakhā matsakhyuḥ pretabhūtasya niṣkṛtiṁ kartumeyivān

I am known as Vidyunmali, dear friend and companion of Ravana; I have come to accomplish the vindication of my friend who has become a departed spirit.

Verse 5 (padma.5.34.5)

kvāsau rāmo ya āhatya sakhāyaṁ rāvaṇaṁ gataḥ tasya bhrātāpi kutrāste sarvaśūraśiromaṇiḥ

Where is that Rama, who struck down my friend Ravana and departed? And where too is his brother, that crest-jewel among all heroes?

Verse 6 (padma.5.34.6)

taṁ hatvā niṣkṛtiṁ tasya prāpsye rāmasya cānujam pibanrudhiramudbhūtaṁ kaṁṭhanālasya budbudaiḥ

Slaying him, Rama's own younger brother, I shall obtain that vindication, drinking the blood that gushes bubbling from the tube of his throat."

Verse 7 (padma.5.34.7)

iti vākyaṁ samākarṇya yodhānāṁ pravarottamaḥ puṣkalo nijagādainaṁ vīryaśauryasamanvitam

Hearing these words, Pushkala, foremost and best of warriors, endowed with valor and heroism, spoke to him.

Verse 8 (padma.5.34.8)

puṣkala uvāca vikatthanaṁ na kurvaṁti saṁgrāme subhaṭā narāḥ parākramaṁ darśayaṁti nijaśastrāstravarṣaṇaiḥ

Pushkala said: "Fine warriors do not boast in battle; they show their valor through the rain of their own weapons and missiles.

Verse 9 (padma.5.34.9)

rāvaṇo nihato yena sasuhṛtsvajanairvṛtaḥ tasya vājinamāhṛtya kutra gaṁtāsi durmada

By whom Ravana, surrounded by his friends and kinsmen, was slain — having seized the horse of that very one, where do you think you will go, O arrogant fool?

Verse 10 (padma.5.34.10)

patiṣyasi tvaṁ śatrughnabāṇaiḥ kodaṁḍanirgataiḥ tvāmatsyaṁti śivā bhūmau patitaṁ prāṇavarjitam

You shall fall by Shatrughna's arrows, loosed from his bow; jackals shall devour you, fallen upon the earth, lifeless.

Verse 11 (padma.5.34.11)

mā garja duṣṭa rāmasya sevake mayi saṁsthite garjaṁti subhaṭā yuddhe śatruṁ jitvā mahodayāt

Do not roar, O wicked one, while I, a servant of Rama, stand before you. Fine warriors roar in battle after conquering their foe, from a place of true triumph."

Verse 12 (padma.5.34.12)

śeṣa uvāca evaṁ bruvaṁtaṁ taṁ vīraṁ puṣkalaṁ raṇadurmadam jaghāna śaktyā subhṛśaṁ hṛdi rākṣasasattamaḥ

Shesha said: As that hero Pushkala, fierce in battle, spoke thus, the foremost of rakshasas struck him violently in the chest with his spear.

Verse 13 (padma.5.34.13)

āyāṁtīṁ tāṁ mahāśaktimāyasīṁ kāṁcanāśritām ciccheda tribhiratyugraiḥ śitairbāṇaiḥ sa puṣkalaḥ

As that great iron-tipped, gold-adorned spear came flying at him, Pushkala cut it apart with three extremely fierce, sharp arrows.

Verse 14 (padma.5.34.14)

sā tridhā hyapatadbhūmau viśikhairniṣprabhīkṛtā pataṁtī virarājāsau viṣṇoḥ śaktitrayīva kim

Split into three by the arrows and stripped of its splendor, it fell to the earth; as it fell, it shone as if it were Vishnu's own triad of powers.

Verse 15 (padma.5.34.15)

tāṁ chinnāṁ śaktikāṁ dṛṣṭvā rākṣasaḥ paratāpanaḥ jagrāha śūlaṁ tarasā triśikhaṁ lohanirmitam

Seeing his spear thus cut down, the rakshasa, tormentor of foes, swiftly seized a trident, forged of iron, three-pointed.

Verse 16 (padma.5.34.16)

tīkṣṇāgraṁ jvalanaprakhyaṁ rākṣaseṁdro vyamocayat āyāṁtaṁ tilaśaścakre bāṇaiḥ puṣkalasaṁjñitaḥ

The lord of rakshasas hurled it, sharp-pointed and blazing like fire; as it came flying, Pushkala shattered it to pieces, as small as sesame seeds, with his arrows.

Verse 17 (padma.5.34.17)

chittvā triśūlaṁ tarasā rāghavasya hi sevakaḥ puṣkalaścāpa ādhatta bāṇāṁstīkṣṇānmanojavān

Having swiftly cut down the trident, that servant of Raghava, Pushkala, fitted to his bow sharp arrows, swift as thought.

Verse 18 (padma.5.34.18)

te bāṇā hṛdi tasyāśu lagnā rāgaṁ batāsṛjan vaiṣṇavasya yathā svāṁte guṇā viṣṇormanoharāḥ

Those arrows, striking swiftly into his chest, produced, as it were, a redness — like the charming virtues of Vishnu that stain the heart of his devotee.

Verse 19 (padma.5.34.19)

tadbāṇavedhaduḥkhārto vidyunmālī sudurmadaḥ jagrāha mudgaraṁ ghoraṁ puṣkalaṁ haṁtumudyataḥ

Vidyunmali, sorely arrogant, tormented by the pain of those arrow-wounds, seized a fearsome mace, ready to slay Pushkala.

Verse 20 (padma.5.34.20)

mudgaraḥ prahitastena vidyunmālyabhidhena hi hṛdi lagnosṛjacchīghraṁ kaśmalaṁ tadakārayat

That mace, hurled by the one named Vidyunmali, struck his chest, and swiftly caused him to lose his senses.

Verse 21 (padma.5.34.21)

mudgaraprahato vīraḥ kaṁpamānaḥ savepathuḥ papāta syaṁdanopasthe puṣkalaḥ śatrutāpanaḥ

Struck by the mace, trembling, shaking, that hero, Pushkala, scorcher of foes, fell upon the floor of his chariot.

Verse 22 (padma.5.34.22)

ugradaṁṣṭro'tha tadbhrātā lakṣmīnidhimayodhayat śastrāstrairbahudhā muktairvīraprāṇahṛtiṁkaraiḥ

Then Ugradamshtra, his brother, engaged Lakshmi-nidhi in battle, with weapons of many kinds unleashed, capable of taking heroes' lives.

Verse 23 (padma.5.34.23)

puṣkalastatkṣaṇātprāpya saṁjñāṁ rākṣasamabravīt dhanyosi rākṣasaśreṣṭha mahīyāṁste parākramaḥ

Pushkala, that very instant regaining consciousness, said to the rakshasa: "You are blessed, O best of rakshasas, great indeed is your valor.

Verse 24 (padma.5.34.24)

paśyedānīṁ mamāpyuccaiḥ pratijñāṁ śūramānitām vimānātpātayāmyadya bhūmau tvāṁ śitasāyakaiḥ

Now behold my own vow too, honored among heroes: today I shall bring you down from your chariot to the earth with my sharp arrows."

Verse 25 (padma.5.34.25)

ityuktvā niśitaṁ bāṇaṁ samagṛhṇāddurāsadam jvalaṁtamagnitejaskaṁ mahaudāryasamanvitam

Having said this, he took up a sharp arrow, hard to withstand, blazing with the splendor of fire, endowed with great magnificence.

Verse 26 (padma.5.34.26)

sa yāvattatpratīkartuṁ vidhatte svaparākramam tāvaddhṛdigato'tyugrastīkṣṇadhāraḥ sasāyakaḥ

While he was applying his own valor to meet that counter-stroke, at that very moment an extremely fierce, sharp-edged arrow struck his chest.

Verse 27 (padma.5.34.27)

tena bāṇena vibhrāṁto bhramaccittaḥ sa rākṣasaḥ papāta kāmagopasthādbhūmau vigatacetanaḥ

By that arrow bewildered, his mind reeling, that rakshasa fell from the platform of his wish-borne chariot to the ground, senseless.

Verse 28 (padma.5.34.28)

ugradaṁṣṭreṇa vai dṛṣṭaḥ patamāno nijāgrajaḥ gṛhītvā taṁ vimānāṁtarninaya ripuśaṁkitaḥ

Ugradamshtra, seeing his elder brother falling, and fearing the enemy, took hold of him and carried him back into the chariot.

Verse 29 (padma.5.34.29)

prāha cāriṁ mahāroṣātpuṣkalaṁ balināṁ varam madbhrātaraṁ pātayitvā kutra yāsyasi durmate

In great rage he said to the enemy Pushkala, best among the mighty: "Having felled my brother, where do you think you will go, evil-minded one?

Verse 30 (padma.5.34.30)

māṁ vai yudhi vinirjitya gaṁtāsi jayamuttamam sthite mayi tava svāṁte jayāśā vinivartya tām

You think you will go to supreme victory, having conquered me in battle. While I still stand, I shall turn back that very hope of victory from your heart."

Verse 31 (padma.5.34.31)

evaṁ bruvaṁtaṁ tarasā jaghāna daśabhiḥ śaraiḥ hṛdaye tasya duṣṭasya roṣapūritalocanaḥ

As he spoke thus, that wicked one, his eyes filled with rage, swiftly struck him with ten arrows in the chest.

Verse 32 (padma.5.34.32)

sa tāḍito daśaśaraiḥ puṣkalena mahātmanā cukrodha hṛdi durbuddhistaṁ haṁtumupacakrame

Struck by those ten arrows of the great-souled Pushkala, that evil-minded one grew furious in his heart, and set about to slay him.

Verse 33 (padma.5.34.33)

daṁtānniṣpiṣya sakrodho muṣṭimudyamya cāhanat vyanadadvajranirghātapātaśaṁkāṁ sṛjanhṛdi

Grinding his teeth in rage, raising his fist, he struck a blow, roaring so as to make one's heart fear the fall of the thunderbolt itself.

Verse 34 (padma.5.34.34)

muṣṭinābhihato vīraḥ puṣkalaḥ paramāstravit nākaṁpata viniṣpeṣaṁ vāṁchaṁstasya durātmanaḥ

Struck by that fist, the hero Pushkala, most knowledgeable in weapons, did not so much as tremble, desiring instead the utter destruction of that evil soul.

Verse 35 (padma.5.34.35)

vatsadaṁtānmahātīkṣṇānmumoca hṛdi sāyakān tairbāṇairvyathito daityastriśūlaṁ tu samādade

He released calf-tooth arrows, extremely sharp, into his chest; tormented by those arrows, the demon then took up a trident.

Verse 36 (padma.5.34.36)

jājvalyamānaṁ triśikhaṁ jvālāmālātibhīṣaṇam lagnaṁ hṛdi mahāvīra puṣkalasya tu dāruṇam

That blazing trident, with a garland of flames most terrible, struck fiercely into the heart of the great hero Pushkala.

Verse 37 (padma.5.34.37)

mūrcchitastena śūlena nihato dhanvisattamaḥ kaśmalaṁ paramaṁ prāptaḥ papāta syaṁdanopari

Struck by that trident, that best of archers fell unconscious; overcome by extreme faintness, he collapsed upon his chariot.

Verse 38 (padma.5.34.38)

mūrcchāṁ prāptaṁ tamājñāya hanūmānpavanātmajaḥ kopavyākulitasvāṁto babhāṣe taṁ tu rākṣasam

Knowing him to have fallen unconscious, Hanuman, son of the Wind, his heart agitated with anger, spoke to that rakshasa:

Verse 39 (padma.5.34.39)

kutra gacchasi durbuddhe mayi yoddhari saṁsthite tvāṁ hanmi caraṇāghātairvājihartāramāgatam

"Where do you think you will go, evil-minded one, while I stand here as your foe? I shall slay you with blows of my foot, thief of the horse that you are."

Verse 40 (padma.5.34.40)

evamuktvā mahādaityāñjaghāna parasainikān vimānasthānnakhāgreṇa dārayannabhasi sthitaḥ

Having said this, standing in the sky, he struck the great demons, the enemy soldiers, tearing apart those stationed in their chariots with the tips of his nails.

Verse 41 (padma.5.34.41)

lāṁgūlenāhatāḥ kecitkecitpādatalā hatāḥ bāhubhyāṁ dāritāḥ kecitpavanasya tanūbhuvā

Some were struck by that son of the Wind with his tail, some struck by the sole of his foot, some torn apart by his two arms.

Verse 42 (padma.5.34.42)

naśyaṁti kecinnihatāḥ kecinmūrcchaṁti saṁhatāḥ palāyaṁte padāghātabhayapīḍāhatāstataḥ

Some, struck down, perished; some, battered, fell unconscious; others fled, struck by fear and pain from the blows of his feet.

Verse 43 (padma.5.34.43)

aneke nihatāstatra rākṣasāścātidāruṇāḥ chinnā bhinnā dvidhā jātāḥ pavanasya sutena vai

Many extremely fearsome rakshasas were slain there, cut, pierced, and split in two by the son of the Wind.

Verse 44 (padma.5.34.44)

kāmagaṁtuvimānaṁ tadbhinnaprākāratoraṇam hāhā kurvadbhirasuraiḥ samaṁtātparivāritam

That wish-moving chariot, its ramparts and archways shattered, was surrounded on every side by demons crying out in dismay.

Verse 45 (padma.5.34.45)

hanūmati mahāśūre kṣaṇaṁ bhūmau kṣaṇaṁ divi itastataḥ pradṛśyeta kāmayānaṁ durāsadam

While the great hero Hanuman was, in one moment on the ground, in the next in the sky, that formidable wish-borne chariot could be seen darting here and there.

Verse 46 (padma.5.34.46)

yatrayatra vimānaṁ tattatratatra samīrajaḥ praharanneva dṛśyeta kāmarūpadharaḥ kapiḥ

Wherever that chariot went, there, right there, the son of the Wind, the monkey who assumes any form at will, could be seen striking blows.

Verse 47 (padma.5.34.47)

evaṁ tadākulībhūte vimānasthe mahājane ugradaṁṣṭrastu daityeṁdro hanūmaṁtamupeyivān

Thus, while the great host stationed in the chariot was thrown into confusion, Ugradamshtra, lord of the demons, approached Hanuman.

Verse 48 (padma.5.34.48)

kape tvayā mahatkarma kṛtaṁ yadbhaṭapātanam kṣaṇaṁ tiṣṭhasi cetkurve tava prāṇaviyojanam

"O monkey, great is the deed you have done, felling my warriors; if you stand here a moment more, I shall part you from your life."

Verse 49 (padma.5.34.49)

evamuktvā hanūmaṁtaṁ prajaghāna sa durmatiḥ triśūlena sutīkṣṇena jvalatpāvakakāṁtinā

Having said this, that evil-minded one struck Hanuman with an extremely sharp trident, radiant like blazing fire.

Verse 50 (padma.5.34.50)

tadāgataṁ triśūlaṁ ca mukhe jagrāha vīryavān cūrṇayāmāsa sakalaṁ sarvalohavinirmitam

That mighty one caught the incoming trident in his very mouth and crushed it entirely to powder, though it was wholly forged of iron.

Verse 51 (padma.5.34.51)

cūrṇayitvā triśūlaṁ tadāyasaṁ daityamocitam jaghāna taṁ capeṭābhirbahvībhirhanumānbalī

Having crushed to powder that iron trident hurled by the demon, mighty Hanuman struck him with many resounding slaps.

Verse 52 (padma.5.34.52)

sa āhataḥ kapīndreṇa capeṭābhiritastataḥ vyathito vyasṛjanmāyāṁ sarvalokabhayaṁkarīm

Struck here and there by the lord of monkeys' slaps, he, in his distress, unleashed a magical illusion that terrified all the worlds.

Verse 53 (padma.5.34.53)

Then arose an intense darkness, in which no one at all could be discerned, in which many people could not tell their own from strangers.

Verse 54 (padma.5.34.54)

śilāḥ parvataśṛṁgābhāḥ pataṁti subhaṭopari tābhirhatāstu te sarve vyākulā atha jajñire

Rocks, like mountain peaks, fell down upon the fine warriors; struck by them, all of them became thrown into confusion.

Verse 55 (padma.5.34.55)

vidyuto vilasaṁtyatra garjaṁti jaladā ghanam varṣaṁti pūyarudhiraṁ muṁcaṁti samalaṁ jalam

Lightning flashed there, clouds thundered deeply, rains of pus and blood fell, and impure water was released.

Verse 56 (padma.5.34.56)

ākāśātpatamānāni kabaṁdhāni bahūni ca dṛśyaṁte chinnaśīrṣāṇi sakuṁḍalayutāni ca

Many headless trunks were seen falling from the sky, and severed heads too, adorned with their earrings.

Verse 57 (padma.5.34.57)

nagnā virūpāḥ subhṛśaṁ kīrṇakeśāḥ sudurmukhāḥ dṛśyaṁte sarvato daityā dāruṇā bhayakāriṇaḥ

Naked, exceedingly deformed demons, disheveled-haired, of hideous faces, terrible and fear-causing, were seen everywhere.

Verse 58 (padma.5.34.58)

tadā vyākulitā lokāḥ parasparabhayākulāḥ palāyanaparā jātā mahotpātamamaṁsata

Then the people, thrown into confusion, terrified of one another, took to flight, believing it to be a great calamity.

Verse 59 (padma.5.34.59)

tadā śatrughna āyāto rathe sthitvā mahāyaśāḥ śrīrāmasmaraṇaṁ kṛtvā cāpe saṁdhāya sāyakān

Then Shatrughna, of great renown, came, standing in his chariot; remembering Shri Rama, he fitted arrows to his bow.

Verse 60 (padma.5.34.60)

tāṁ māyāṁ sa vidhūyātha mohanāstreṇa vīryavān śaradhārāḥ kiranvyomni vavarṣa samaresuram

That mighty one dispelled that illusion with the Mohana weapon, and, scattering streams of arrows into the sky, showered them upon the demon in that battle.

Verse 61 (padma.5.34.61)

tadādiśaḥ prasedustā ravistvapariveṣavān meghā yathāgataṁ yātā vidyutaḥ śāṁtimāgatāḥ

Then the quarters cleared, the sun shone without its haze-ring, the clouds went back as they had come, and the lightnings grew calm.

Verse 62 (padma.5.34.62)

tadā vimānaṁ purato dṛśyate rākṣasairyutam chiṁdhi bhiṁdhīti bhāṣābhirvyākulaṁ sutarāṁ mahat

Then that great chariot, filled with rakshasas, was seen ahead, greatly in tumult, filled with cries of "cut! pierce!"

Verse 63 (padma.5.34.63)

bāṇāśca śatasāhasrāḥ svarṇapuṁkhaiśca śobhitāḥ peturvimāne nabhasi sthite kāmagame muhuḥ

Hundreds of thousands of arrows, resplendent with golden shafts, fell again and again upon that wish-moving chariot stationed in the sky.

Verse 64 (padma.5.34.64)

tadā bhagnaṁ vimānaṁ hi dṛśyate na taduccakaiḥ svapurī khaṇḍamekatra bhagnāṁgamiva bhūtale

Then that chariot, shattered, was no longer seen aloft; it lay, as it were a broken-limbed city fallen in fragments upon the earth.

Verse 65 (padma.5.34.65)

tadā prakupito daityo bāṇāndhanuṣi saṁdadhe tairbāṇairvikiranrāmabhrātaraṁ cābhigarjitaḥ

Then the enraged demon fitted arrows to his bow, and scattering them, roared out against the brother of Rama.

Verse 66 (padma.5.34.66)

te bāṇāḥ śataśastasya lagnā vapuṣi bhūriśaḥ śobhāmāpuḥ śoṇitaughānvahaṁtastīkṣṇavaktriṇaḥ

Those hundreds of sharp-tipped arrows, striking his body abundantly, gained a strange beauty as they carried away streams of blood.

Verse 67 (padma.5.34.67)

śatrughnaḥ parayā śaktyā saṁyukto vāyudaivatam astraṁ dhanuṣi cādhatta rākṣasānāṁ prakampanam

Shatrughna, endowed with supreme power, fitted to his bow the Vayu weapon, whose deity is the Wind, the terror of rakshasas.

Verse 68 (padma.5.34.68)

tenāstreṇa vimānātkhātpatanto muktamūrdhajāḥ dṛśyaṁte bhūtavetālasaṁghā iva nabhaścarāḥ

By that weapon, falling from their chariot in the sky, disheveled-haired, they were seen like hosts of ghosts and vetalas roaming the air.

Verse 69 (padma.5.34.69)

tadastraṁ raghunāthasya bhrātrā muktaṁ vilokya saḥ astraṁ ca pāśupatyaṁ sa cāpe dhāddanujātmajaḥ

Seeing that weapon released by Raghunatha's brother, that son of the demons fitted to his bow the Pashupata weapon.

Verse 70 (padma.5.34.70)

tataḥ pravṛttā vetālā bhūtāḥ pretaniśācarāḥ kapālakartarīyuktāḥ pibantaḥ śoṇitaṁ bahu

Then there issued forth vetalas, bhutas, pretas, and nishacharas, armed with skull-cups and knives, drinking abundant blood.

Verse 71 (padma.5.34.71)

te vai śatrughnavīrāṇāṁ rudhirāṇi papurmudā jīvatāmapi durvārāḥ kartarīpāṇiśobhitāḥ

They, uncontrollable, with knives shining in their hands, joyfully drank the blood even of Shatrughna's living warriors.

Verse 72 (padma.5.34.72)

tadastraṁ vyāpnuvaddṛṣṭvā sarvavīraprabhaṁjanam mumoca tannirāsāya cāstraṁ nārāyaṇābhidham

Seeing that weapon spreading, shattering all the heroes, he released, to dispel it, the weapon named Narayana.

Verse 73 (padma.5.34.73)

nārāyaṇāstraṁ tānsarvānvārayāmāsa tatkṣaṇāt te sarve vilayaṁ prāpurniśācarapraṇoditāḥ

The Narayana weapon at once restrained all of them; all those beings, sent forth by the night-wanderer, were dissolved.

Verse 74 (padma.5.34.74)

tadā kruddho niśācārī vidyunmālī samādade triśūlaṁ niśitaṁ ghoraṁ śatrughnaṁ haṁtumulbaṇam

Then the enraged night-wanderer Vidyunmali took up a sharp, terrible, fearsome trident to slay Shatrughna.

Verse 75 (padma.5.34.75)

śūlahastaṁ samāyāṁtaṁ vidyunmālinamāhave sāyakaiḥ prāharattasya bhuje tvardhaśaśiprabhaiḥ

As Vidyunmali, trident in hand, advanced upon him in battle, Shatrughna struck his arm with arrows resplendent as the half-moon.

Verse 76 (padma.5.34.76)

tairbāṇaiśchinnahastaḥ sa śirasā haṁtumudyataḥ hatosi yāhi śatrughna kastvāṁ trātā bhaviṣyati

His arm severed by those arrows, he, ready to strike now with his head alone, cried: "You are slain, Shatrughna — go; who shall be your savior now?"

Verse 77 (padma.5.34.77)

iti bruvāṇaṁ tarasā ciccheda śitasāyakaiḥ mastakaṁ tasya balinaḥ śūrasya saha kuṁḍalam

As he spoke thus, Shatrughna swiftly severed, with sharp arrows, the head of that mighty hero, together with its earrings.

Verse 78 (padma.5.34.78)

taṁ chinnaśirasaṁ dṛṣṭvā ugradaṁṣṭraḥ pratāpavān muṣṭinā haṁtumārebhe śatrughnaṁ śūrasevitam

Seeing him beheaded, the mighty Ugradamshtra began to strike at Shatrughna, attended by heroes, with his fist.

Verse 79 (padma.5.34.79)

śatrughnastu kṣurapreṇa sāyakenācchinacchiraḥ pradhāvato raṇe vīrānsarvaśastrāstrakovidān

Shatrughna, with a razor-edged arrow, cut off his head, as Ugradamshtra rushed forward among the heroes skilled in all weapons on the battlefield.

Verse 80 (padma.5.34.80)

hataśeṣā yayuḥ sarve rākṣasā nāthavarjitāḥ śatrughnaṁ praṇipatyātha dadurvājinamāhṛtam

All the surviving rakshasas, bereft of their lord, then bowed down to Shatrughna and gave back the horse they had seized.

Verse 81 (padma.5.34.81)

tato vīṇāninādāśca śaṁkhanādāḥ samaṁtataḥ śrūyaṁte śūravīrāṇāṁ jayanādā manoharāḥ

Then the sounds of veenas and the notes of conches were heard on every side, and the delightful shouts of victory from the heroic warriors.
