Recovering the Horse from the Yogini's Realm
Verse 1 (padma.5.38.1)
sūta uvāca etadākhyānakaṁ śrutvā vātsyāyana udāradhīḥ paramaṁ harṣamāpede jagāda ca phaṇīśvaram
Suta said: Hearing this account, Vatsyayana, of noble mind, felt supreme joy, and spoke to the Lord of Serpents.
Verse 2 (padma.5.38.2)
vātsyāyana uvāca kathāṁ saṁśṛṇvate mahyaṁ tṛptirnāsti phaṇīśvara raghunāthasya bhaktārtihārikīrtikarasya vai
Vatsyayana said: "As I listen to this tale, O Lord of Serpents, I find no satiation — the tale of Raghunatha, whose fame removes the suffering of his devotees.
Verse 3 (padma.5.38.3)
dhanya āraṇyako nāma munirvedadharaḥ paraḥ raghunāthaṁ samālokya dehaṁ tatyāja naśvaram
Blessed indeed is the sage named Aranyaka, supreme bearer of the Vedas, who, beholding Raghunatha, cast off his perishable body.
Verse 4 (padma.5.38.4)
tato rājño hayaḥ kutra gataḥ kena niyaṁtritaḥ kathaṁ tatra ramānātha kīrtirjātā phaṇīśvara
Then, where did the king's horse go, by whom was it controlled? How, O Lord of Serpents, did the Lord of Lakshmi's fame arise there?
Verse 5 (padma.5.38.5)
sarvaṁ kathaya me tathyaṁ sarvajño'sti yato bhavān dharādharavapurdhārī sākṣāttasya svarūpadhṛk
Tell me all of it truly, since you are omniscient — you who bear the very form of the earth-bearer, the direct embodiment of his own true nature."
Verse 6 (padma.5.38.6)

Verse 7 (padma.5.38.7)
śeṣa uvāca sādhu pṛcchasi viprarṣe raghunāthaguṇānmuhuḥ śrutā na śrutavatkṛtvā teṣu lolupatāṁ dadhat
Shesha said: "Well do you ask, O sage among Brahmins, again and again about Raghunatha's virtues — hearing them, yet treating them as though unheard, holding fast to your eagerness for them."
Verse 8 (padma.5.38.8)
tato niragamadvāhaḥ sainikairbahubhivṛtaḥ revātīre manojñe tu munivṛṁdaniṣevite
Then the horse set out, surrounded by many soldiers, upon the delightful bank of the Reva, frequented by throngs of sages.
Verse 9 (padma.5.38.9)
senācarāstataḥ sarve yatra vāhastatastataḥ prasarpaṁti nirīkṣaṁtastanmārgaṁ raṇakovidāḥ
Then all the soldiers, wherever the horse went, there and there, moved along, those skilled in war, watching its path.
Verse 10 (padma.5.38.10)
vājī gato'tha revāyā hrade'gādhajalānvite bhāle svarṇabhavaṁ patraṁ dhārayanpūjitāṁgakaḥ
The horse then went to a deep, fathomless pool of the Reva, bearing on its brow the golden leaf, its limbs honored and adorned.
Verse 11 (padma.5.38.11)
tato jale mamajjāsau rāmacaṁdra hayo varaḥ tadā sarve mahāśūrāstatra vismayamāgatāḥ
Then that excellent horse of Ramachandra sank into the water; then all the great heroes there were struck with wonder.
Verse 12 (padma.5.38.12)
taiḥ parasparamevoce kathaṁ hayasamāgamaḥ ko'tra gaṁtā jale vāhamānetuṁ taṁ mahodayam
They said among themselves: "How shall the horse be recovered? Who here will go into the water to bring back that great and glorious one?"
Verse 13 (padma.5.38.13)
iti yāvatsamudvignā maṁtrayaṁte parasparam tāvadvīraśataiḥ sārdhamājagāma raghoḥ patiḥ
As, thus troubled, they consulted with one another, meanwhile the Lord of the Raghus arrived, together with hundreds of heroes.
Verse 14 (padma.5.38.14)
tānsarvānvimanaskānsa dṛṣṭvā śatrughnasaṁjñitaḥ papraccha meghagaṁbhīravācā vīraśiromaṇiḥ
Seeing all of them dejected, that one named Shatrughna, crest-jewel of heroes, asked, in a voice deep as thunderclouds:
Verse 15 (padma.5.38.15)
kiṁ sthitaṁ nikhilairadya yuṣmābhiḥ saṁghaśo jale kutrāśvo raghunāthasya svarṇapatreṇa śobhitaḥ
"Why do all of you stand today, gathered together, beside the water? Where is the horse of Raghunatha, resplendent with its golden leaf?
Verse 16 (padma.5.38.16)
jale kiṁ vinimagno'sau hṛto vā kena māninā tanme kathayata kṣipraṁ kathaṁ yūyaṁ vimohitāḥ
Has it sunk into the water, or been taken away by some proud one? Tell me this quickly — why are you so bewildered?"
Verse 17 (padma.5.38.17)

The people said: "My lord, we do not know — for a moment it was in the water, then it sank, and your delightful horse has not come back up.
Verse 19 (padma.5.38.19)
tvameva tatra gatvemaṁ vāhamānaya vegataḥ asmābhistatra gaṁtavyaṁ tvayā sārddhaṁ mahāmate
Go there yourself and swiftly bring back this horse; we too must go there, O one of great wisdom, together with you."

"Which heroes should be assigned there, to search for the horse in the water? Who shall bring the horse back, and by what means — tell me that."

iti rājñovacaḥ śrutvā sumatirmaṁtrisattamaḥ uvāca samaye yogyaṁ śatrughnaṁ harṣayanniva
Hearing the king's words, Sumati, best of ministers, spoke fittingly for the occasion, as if to cheer Shatrughna.
Verse 24 (padma.5.38.24)
svāminnasti tava śrīmañchaktiradbhutakarmaṇaḥ pātālagamane śaktirjalamadhyādiha sphuṭam
"My lord, glorious one, you have the power of wondrous deeds — the power to descend even into Patala, and here, clearly, into the midst of the water.
Verse 25 (padma.5.38.25)

mayānītamimaṁ vāhaṁ na komocayituṁ kṣamaḥ varṣāyutena niśitairbāṇakoṭibhirucchikhaiḥ
"This horse, brought here by me — no one is capable of releasing it, not even with tens of millions of sharp, flaming arrows over ten thousand years.
Verse 46 (padma.5.38.46)

But since I am a servant, a doer of duty at Rama's lotus feet, I shall not withhold that horse belonging to the wise King of Kings.
Verse 47 (padma.5.38.47)
mahāna vinayo jāto mama netryāḥ suvājinaḥ kṣamatādrāmacaṁdrastaccharaṇyo bhaktavatsalaḥ
Great is my humility at the sight of this excellent horse — let Ramachandra, that refuge, ever affectionate to his devotees, forgive me.
Verse 48 (padma.5.38.48)
yūyaṁ kliṣṭāstatpuruṣā hayārthaṁ tasya rakṣituḥ yācadhvaṁ varamaprāpyaṁ devānāmapi sattamāḥ
You, his men, have suffered for the sake of protecting his horse; ask of me, O excellent ones, a boon unattainable even by the gods.
Verse 49 (padma.5.38.49)
yathā memīvamatyugraṁ kṣameta puruṣottamaḥ vrīḍāṁ tyaktvākhilāṁ yūyaṁ vṛṇudhvaṁ varamuttamam
so that the Supreme Person may forgive this extremely fierce offense of mine; casting off all shame, choose an excellent boon."
Verse 50 (padma.5.38.50)

Hearing this further word of hers, Hanuman said to her: "By Raghunatha's grace, all is well and abundant for us.
Verse 51 (padma.5.38.51)

tathāpi yāce varamekamuttamaṁ vidhehi tanme manasaḥ samīhitam bhave bhave no raghunāyakaḥ patirvayaṁ ca tatkarmakarāśca kiṁkarāḥ
Yet I ask one excellent boon; grant me this longing of my heart: in birth after birth may Raghunatha alone be our lord, and may we be his workers and servants."
Verse 52 (padma.5.38.52)

Hearing this word of the monkey, that lady, smiling, spoke a sweet word, praised for its virtue.
Verse 53 (padma.5.38.53)
bhavadbhiḥ prārthitaṁ yadvai durllabhaṁ sarvadaivataiḥ tadbhaviṣyatyasaṁdehaḥ sevakāstadraghoḥ pateḥ
"What you have asked for, rare even for all the gods — that shall indeed come to be, without doubt; you shall be servants of the Lord of the Raghus.
Verse 54 (padma.5.38.54)
athāpi varamekaṁ vai dāsyāmi kṛtahelanā raghunāthasya tuṣṭyarthaṁ tadṛtaṁ me bhavedvacaḥ
And yet, having committed offense, I shall grant one boon; let my word become true, for the satisfaction of Raghunatha.
Verse 55 (padma.5.38.55)

Ahead, a king, a jewel among heroes, together with a great warrior, protected by Shiva, will seize your horse.
Verse 56 (padma.5.38.56)
tajjayārthe mahāstraṁ me gṛhṇīta sumahābalāḥ dvairathe sa tu yoddhavyaḥ śatrughnena tvayā mahān
For victory over him, take my great weapon, O ones of very great strength; in single combat he must be fought by you, great Shatrughna.
Verse 57 (padma.5.38.57)
idamastraṁ yadā tvaṁ tu kṣepayiṣyasi saṁgare anena pūto rāmasya svarūpaṁ jñāsyate punaḥ
When you release this weapon in battle, purified by it, he shall again come to know Rama's true nature.
Verse 58 (padma.5.38.58)

jñātvā taṁ vājinaṁ datvā caraṇe prapatiṣyati tasmādgṛhṇīdhvamastraṁ tanmama vairividāraṇam
Knowing this, giving back the horse, he shall fall at your feet. Therefore take this weapon of mine, which rends apart enemies."
Verse 59 (padma.5.38.59)
tacchrutvā raghunāthasya bhrātā jagrāha cāstrakam udaṅmukhaḥ pavitrāṁgo yoginyā dattamadbhutam
Hearing this, Raghunatha's brother, facing north, his body purified, took that wondrous weapon given by the yogini.
Verse 60 (padma.5.38.60)
tatprāpyāstraṁ mahātejā babhūva ripukarśanaḥ duṣpradharṣyo durārādhyo vairivāraṇasatsṛṇiḥ
