Patala Khanda · Chapter 39
Rukmangada Seizes the Horse
Verse 1 (padma.5.39.1)
śeṣa uvāca ninadatsumṛdaṁgeṣu vīṇānādeṣu sarvataḥ mukto vāhastato deva puraṁ devavinirmitam
Shesha said: While drums resounded and the sound of veenas rang out everywhere, the horse, released, then, O god, came upon a city built by the gods.
Verse 2 (padma.5.39.2)
yatra sphāṭika kuḍyānāṁ racanābhirgṛhā nṛṇām hasaṁti viṁdhyaṁ vimalaṁ parvataṁ nāgasevitam
where the houses of men, with their crystal-walled construction, seemed to laugh at the pure Vindhya mountain, served by serpents.
Verse 3 (padma.5.39.3)
rājatāni gṛhāṇyatra dṛśyaṁte prakṛterapi vicitramaṇisannaddhā nānāmāṇikyagopurāḥ
Here silver houses are seen, beyond even Nature's own making; adorned with wondrous gems, with gateways of many rubies.
Verse 4 (padma.5.39.4)
padminyo yatra lokānāṁ gehe gehe manoharāḥ haraṁti cittāni nṛṇāṁ mukhapadmakalekṣitāḥ
where lotus-ponds, delightful, in house after house of the people, steal away the hearts of men when their lotus-blossom faces are glimpsed.
Verse 5 (padma.5.39.5)
padmarāgamaṇiryatra gehe gehe subhūmiṣu baddhaḥ saṁlakṣyate vipra tadoṣṭhaspardhayā nu kim
where, O Brahmin, a ruby is seen set in house after house upon the fine floors — is it, perhaps, in rivalry with the ladies' lips?
Verse 6 (padma.5.39.6)
krīḍāśailāḥ pratyagāraṁ nīlaratnavinirmitāḥ kurvaṁti śaṁkāṁ meghasya mayūrāṇāṁ kalāpinām
Pleasure-hills, fashioned of sapphires, before every house, raise in the peacocks, those bearers of tail-feathers, the suspicion of a cloud.
Verse 7 (padma.5.39.7)
haṁsā yatra nṛṇāṁ gehe sphāṭikeṣu niyaṁtritāḥ kurvaṁti meghānno bhītiṁ mānasaṁ na smaraṁti ca
where swans, kept confined in crystal ponds in the houses of men, feel no fear of clouds, nor do they remember Lake Manasa.
Verse 8 (padma.5.39.8)
niraṁtaraṁ śivasthāne dhvastaṁ caṁdrikayā tamaḥ śuklakṛṣṇavibhedo na pakṣayostatra vai nṛṇām
Continually, in the abode of Shiva, darkness is destroyed by moonlight; there is no distinction there, for the people, between the bright and dark fortnights.
Verse 9 (padma.5.39.9)
tatra vīramaṇī rājā dhārmikeṣvagraṇīrmahān rājyaṁ karoti vipulaṁ sarvabhogasamanvitam
There King Viramani, that great foremost one among the righteous, rules a vast kingdom, replete with every enjoyment.
Verse 10 (padma.5.39.10)
tasya putro mahāśūro nāmnā rukmāṁgado balī vanitābhirgato ramyadehābhiḥ krīḍituṁ vanam
His great-heroic son, mighty, named Rukmangada, went with beautiful-bodied women into a forest to sport.
Verse 11 (padma.5.39.11)
tāsāṁ maṁjīrasaṁrāvaḥ kaṁkaṇānāṁ ravastathā mano harati kāmasya kimanyasya kathātra bhoḥ
The jingling of their anklets, and the tinkling of their bracelets, steal the very mind of Kama himself — what then to speak of others here, sirs?
Verse 12 (padma.5.39.12)
vanaṁ jagāma sumahatsupuṣpanagasaṁyutam sadāśivakṛtasthānamṛtuṣaṭkairvirājitam
He went into a very great forest, filled with flowering trees, a place made by Sadashiva, resplendent with all six seasons.
Verse 13 (padma.5.39.13)
caṁpakā yatra bahuśaḥ phullakorakaśobhitāḥ kurvaṁti kāmināṁ tatra hṛcchayārtiṁ vilokitāḥ
where champaka trees, many of them, resplendent with their blossoming buds, being beheld, brought upon lovers the ache of desire.
Verse 14 (padma.5.39.14)
cūtāḥ phalādibhirnamrā maṁjarīkoṭisaṁyutāḥ nāgāḥ punnāgavṛkṣāśca śālāstālāstamālakāḥ
Mango trees, bent low with fruits and the like, laden with tens of millions of blossoms; nagakesara and punnaga trees, sala, tala, and tamala trees —
Verse 15 (padma.5.39.15)
kokilānāṁ samārāvā yatra ca śrutigocarāḥ sadā madhupajhaṁkāra gatanidrāḥ sumallikāḥ
where the calls of cuckoos came within earshot; jasmines, ever without sleep, from the constant humming of bees;
Verse 16 (padma.5.39.16)
dāḍimānāṁ samūhāśca karṇikāraiḥ samanvitāḥ ketakīkānakīvanyavṛkṣarājivirājitāḥ
groves of pomegranates, together with karnikara trees; resplendent with rows of ketaki, kanaki, and wild forest trees.
Verse 17 (padma.5.39.17)
tasminvane pramadasaṁyutacittavṛttirgāyankalaṁ madhuravāgvicikīrṣayoccaiḥ udyatkucābhirabhito vanitābhirāgācchobhānidhāna vapurudgatabhīrviveśa
In that forest, his mind filled with delight, singing sweetly, his voice melodious, desiring loudly, surrounded on all sides by women with rising breasts, he arrived — that treasury of splendor entered, his body free of fear.
Verse 18 (padma.5.39.18)
kāścittaṁ nṛtyavidyābhistoṣayaṁti sma śobhanam kāścidgānakalābhiśca kāścidvākcaturocitaiḥ
Some of them pleased that splendid one with their art of dance; some with their skill in song; some with their clever, fitting words;
Verse 19 (padma.5.39.19)
bhrūsaṁjñayā parāḥ kāścittoṣayāmāsurunmadāḥ parirambhaṇacāturyaistaṁ hṛṣṭaṁ vidadhuḥ striyaḥ
others, intoxicated with passion, pleased him with the language of their brows; through the artfulness of their embraces, the women made him joyful.
Verse 20 (padma.5.39.20)
tābhiḥ puṣpoccayaṁ kṛtvā bhūṣayāmāsa tāḥ striyaḥ vāṇyā komalayā śaṁsanreme kāmavapurdharaḥ
Gathering flowers with them, that bearer of a form like Kama's, praising them in a gentle voice, adorned those women and sported with them.
Verse 21 (padma.5.39.21)
evaṁ pravṛtte samaye rājarājasya dhīmataḥ prāyāttadvanadeśaṁ sa hayaḥ paramaśobhanaḥ
While this went on, that most splendid horse of the wise king of kings came to that forest region.
Verse 22 (padma.5.39.22)
taṁ svarṇapatraracitaikalalāṭadeśaṁ gaṁgāsamaṁ ghusṛṇakuṁkuma piṁjarāṁgam gatyāsamaṁ pavanavegatiraskariṇyā dṛṣṭvā striyaḥ paramakautukadhāmadeham
Seeing it — its forehead fashioned with a single golden leaf, its body tawny with saffron and kumkum-hued like the Ganga, its gait matching the swiftness of the wind, its very form a supreme abode of wonder — the women exclaimed.
Verse 23 (padma.5.39.23)
ūcuḥ patiṁ kamalamadhyapiśaṁgavarṇāstāmrādharapratibhayāhatavidrumābhāḥ daṁtavrajapramitahāsyasuśobhivaktrāḥ kāmasya bāṇanayanādivimohanābhāḥ
They spoke to their lord — those women of hue like the tawny heart of a lotus, their coral-red lips outshining coral in fearsome brilliance, their faces beautified by smiles measured out through rows of teeth, their radiance bewildering as the very arrow-glances of Kama —
Verse 24 (padma.5.39.24)
striya ūcuḥ kāṁtakoyaṁ mahānarvāsvarṇapatraikaśobhitaḥ kasya vā bhāti śobhāḍhyo gṛhāṇa svabalādimam
The women said: "Beloved, whose great horse is this, adorned with a single golden leaf? To whom does this splendor-rich one belong? Take it by your own strength."
Verse 25 (padma.5.39.25)
śeṣa uvāca taduktaṁ vaca ākarṇya līlālalitalocanaḥ jagrāha hayamekena karapadmena līlayā
Shesha said: Hearing those words thus spoken, he, his eyes playful and charming, seized the horse with one lotus-like hand, in sport.
Verse 26 (padma.5.39.26)
vācayitvā svarṇapatraṁ spaṣṭavarṇasamanvitam jahāsa mahilāmadhye jagāda vacanaṁ punaḥ
Reading the golden leaf, inscribed with clear letters, he laughed amidst the women, and spoke again these words:
Verse 27 (padma.5.39.27)
rukmāṁgada uvāca pṛthivyāṁ nāsti me pitrā samaḥ śauryeṇa ca śriyā tasminkathaṁ vidhatte sa utsekaṁ rāmabhūmipaḥ
Rukmangada said: "On this earth there is none equal to my father in valor and splendor. How then does this King Rama presume such arrogance against him?
Verse 28 (padma.5.39.28)
yasya rakṣāṁ prakurute sadā rudraḥ pinākadhṛk yaṁ devā dānavā yakṣā namaṁti maṇimaulibhiḥ
Rudra, bearer of the trident, ever protects him; the gods, the danavas, and the yakshas bow to him with their jewel-crowned heads.
Verse 29 (padma.5.39.29)
kurutādvājimedhaṁ vai janako me mahābalaḥ yā tveṣa vājiśālāyāṁ badhnaṁtu mama vai bhaṭāḥ
Let my mighty father perform the horse-sacrifice — let my soldiers bind this horse in my very own stable."
Verse 30 (padma.5.39.30)
iti vākyaṁ samākarṇya mahilāstā manoharāḥ praharṣavadanā jātāḥ kāṁtaṁ tu parirebhire
Hearing these words, those delightful women, their faces filled with joy, embraced their beloved.
Verse 31 (padma.5.39.31)
gṛhītvā ca hayaṁ putro rājño vīramaṇermahān puraṁ patnīsamāyukto mahotsāhamavīviśat
Taking the horse, the great son of King Viramani, together with his wives, entered the city amid great enthusiasm.
Verse 32 (padma.5.39.32)
mṛdaṁgadhvaniṣu proccairāhateṣu samaṁtataḥ baṁdibhiḥ saṁstutaḥ prāgātsvapiturmaṁdiraṁ mahat
As the sound of drums, loudly struck, resounded on every side, praised by bards, he went forth to his father's great palace.
Verse 33 (padma.5.39.33)
tasmai sa kathayāmāsa hayaṁ nītaṁ raghoḥ pateḥ vājimedhāya nirmuktaṁ svacchaṁdagatimadbhutam
He told him of the horse he had taken, belonging to the Lord of the Raghus, released for the horse-sacrifice, wondrous, moving freely at will,
Verse 34 (padma.5.39.34)
rakṣitaṁ śatrusūdena mahābalasametinā tacchrutvā vacanaṁ tasya nṛpo vīramaṇirmahān
guarded by the destroyer of enemies, joined with great strength. Hearing his words, that great king Viramani —
Verse 35 (padma.5.39.35)
nātipraśaṁsayāmāsa tatkarma sumahāmatiḥ nītvā punaḥ samāyāṁtaṁ caurasyeva viceṣṭitam
that man of great wisdom did not overly praise that deed, considering it, having taken it and coming back, like the conduct of a thief.
Verse 36 (padma.5.39.36)
kathayāmāsa jāmātre śivāyādbhutakarmaṇe ardhāṁganādharāyāṁgabhūṣāya caṁdradhāriṇe
He related it to his son-in-law Shiva, of wondrous deeds, who bears half a woman in his body, whose ornament is the serpent, who wears the moon.
Verse 37 (padma.5.39.37)
tena saṁmaṁtrayāmāsa nṛpo vīramaṇirmahān putrasṛṣṭaṁ mahatkarma viniṁdyaṁ mahatāṁ mataḥ
With him the great King Viramani took counsel about the great deed done by his son, which, in the opinion of the great, was reprehensible.
Verse 38 (padma.5.39.38)
śiva uvāca rājanputreṇa bhavataḥ kṛtaṁ karma mahādbhutam yo jahāra mahāvāhaṁrāmacaṁdrasya dhīmataḥ
Shiva said: "O king, a most wondrous deed has been done by your son — he who seized the great horse of the wise Ramachandra.
Verse 39 (padma.5.39.39)
adya yuddhaṁ mahadbhāti surāsuravimohanam śatrughnena mahārājñā vīrakoṭyekarakṣiṇā
Today a great battle looms, bewildering to gods and demons alike, with the great king Shatrughna, sole protector of tens of millions of heroes.
Verse 40 (padma.5.39.40)
mayā yo dhriyate svāṁte jihvayā procyate hi yaḥ tasya rāmasyayajñāṁgaṁ jahāra tava putrakaḥ
He whom I hold within my heart, whom my very tongue utters — your son has seized this piece of that very Rama's sacrifice.
Verse 41 (padma.5.39.41)
paramatra mahāl labho bhaviṣyatitarāṁ raṇe yadrāmacaraṇāṁbhojaṁ drakṣyāmaḥ svīyasevitam
But there shall be a supremely great gain here in this battle — that we shall behold Rama's own lotus feet, served by his own devotees.
Verse 42 (padma.5.39.42)
atra yatno mahānkāryo hayasya parirakṣaṇe nayiṣyaṁti balādvāhaṁ mayā rakṣitamapyamum
Here great effort must be made in guarding the horse — they will try to take back this horse by force, even though it is now guarded by me.
Verse 43 (padma.5.39.43)
tasmādimaṁ mahārāja rājyena saha sannataḥ vājinaṁ bhojanaṁ datvā prekṣasvāṁghriyugaṁ tataḥ
Therefore, O great king, humbly, together with your kingdom, having given the horse due honor, look then to his pair of feet."
Verse 44 (padma.5.39.44)
iti vākyaṁ samākarṇya śivasya sa nṛpottamaḥ uvāca taṁ sureṁdrādivaṁdyapādāṁbujadvayam
Hearing these words of Shiva, that best of kings spoke to him, whose pair of lotus feet are venerated by Indra and the other gods.
Verse 45 (padma.5.39.45)
vīramaṇiruvāca kṣatriyāṇāmayaṁ dharmo yatpratāpasya rakṣaṇam tadasau krāṁtumudyuktaḥ kratunā hayasaṁjñinā
Viramani said: "This is the very dharma of Kshatriyas, to protect their own valor — and that one is set on conquering through the sacrifice called the horse-rite.
Verse 46 (padma.5.39.46)
tasmādrakṣyaḥ svapratāpo yenakenāpi māninā yāvacchakyaṁ karma kṛtvā śarīravyayakāriṇā
Therefore one's own valor must be protected by any proud man whatsoever, doing what deeds he can, even at the expense of his body.
Verse 47 (padma.5.39.47)
sarvaṁ kṛtaṁ sutenedaṁ gṛhīto'śva punaryataḥ kopitaṁ rāmabhūpālaṁ samayārhaṁ kuru prabho
All this was done by my son — having seized the horse; now, O lord, make what is fitting toward Rama, the king, once he is angered."
Verse 48 (padma.5.39.48)
kṣattriyāṇāmidaṁ karma kartavyārhaṁ bhavennahi yadakasmādripoḥ pādau praṇamedbhayavihvalaḥ
"This deed would not be fitting for Kshatriyas to do — that one should suddenly bow at an enemy's feet, overcome by fear.
Verse 49 (padma.5.39.49)
ripavo vihasaṁtyenaṁ kātaro'yaṁ nṛpādhamaḥ kṣudraḥ prākṛtavannīco natavānbhayavihvalaḥ
Enemies would laugh at him — 'this basest of kings is a coward, petty, base as a commoner, one who bowed, overcome by fear.'
Verse 50 (padma.5.39.50)
tasmādbhavānyathāyogyaṁ yoddhavye samupasthite yadvidheyaṁ vicāryaiva kartavyaṁ bhaktarakṣaṇam
Therefore, when battle is at hand, act as is fitting; having deliberated on what is to be done, protection of one's devotee must also be undertaken."
Verse 51 (padma.5.39.51)
śeṣa uvāca iti vākyaṁ samākarṇya caṁdracūḍovadadvacaḥ prahasanmeghagaṁbhīravāṇyā saṁmohayanmanaḥ
Shesha said: Hearing these words, the moon-crested one spoke, smiling, in a voice deep as thunderclouds, bewitching the mind:
Verse 52 (padma.5.39.52)
yadi devāstrayastriṁśatkoṭayaḥ samupasthitāḥ tathāpi tvattaḥ kenāśvo gṛhyate mama rakṣituḥ
"Even if all the thirty-three crores of gods were to gather here, still, by whom could this horse, guarded by me, ever be taken from you?
Verse 53 (padma.5.39.53)
yadi rāmaḥ samāgatya svātmānaṁ darśayiṣyati tadāhaṁ caraṇau tasya praṇamāmi sukomalau
If Rama himself should come and show me his own true self, then I shall bow at his two most tender feet.
Verse 54 (padma.5.39.54)
svāminā na hi yoddhavyaṁ mahāna naya ucyate anye vīrāstṛṇaprāyāḥ kiṁcitkartuṁ na vai kṣamāḥ
One should not fight with the master — this is called the greater wisdom. As for other heroes, they are as mere straw, incapable of doing anything at all.
Verse 55 (padma.5.39.55)
tasmādyuddhyasva rājeṁdra rakṣake mayi susthite ko gṛhṇāti balādvāhaṁ trilokī yadi saṁgatā
Therefore, wage war, O lord of kings, since I stand firm as protector; who could take this horse by force, even if the three worlds united?"
Verse 56 (padma.5.39.56)
śeṣa uvāca etadvacaḥ paraṁ śrutvā caṁdracūḍasya bhūmipaḥ jaharṣa mānase'tyaṁtaṁ yuddhakarmaṇi kautukī
Shesha said: Hearing this further word of the moon-crested one, the king, eager for the work of battle, rejoiced exceedingly in his heart.
