The Decision to Battle Viramani
Verse 1 (padma.5.40.1)
शेष उवाच। सेनाचरा महाराज्ञो महाबलसमन्विताः । समागतास्तं पश्यंतो हयं रामस्य भूपतेः
śeṣa uvāca senācarā mahārājño mahābalasamanvitāḥ samāgatāstaṁ paśyaṁto hayaṁ rāmasya bhūpateḥ
Shesha said: The soldiers of the great king, endowed with great strength, gathered there, looking for that horse of King Rama.
Verse 2 (padma.5.40.2)
क्वा सावश्वः केन नीतः कथं वा दृश्यते न सः । को गंता यमपुर्यां वै वाहं हृत्वा सुमंदधीः
kvā sāvaśvaḥ kena nītaḥ kathaṁ vā dṛśyate na saḥ ko gaṁtā yamapuryāṁ vai vāhaṁ hṛtvā sumaṁdadhīḥ
"Where is that horse, by whom taken, and why is it not seen? Who, having stolen the horse, of dull mind, shall go to the city of Yama?"
Verse 3 (padma.5.40.3)
विलोकयंतस्तन्मार्गं यावत्सेनाचरा रघोः । तावत्प्राप्तो महाराजो महासैन्यपरीवृतः
vilokayaṁtastanmārgaṁ yāvatsenācarā raghoḥ tāvatprāpto mahārājo mahāsainyaparīvṛtaḥ
As the soldiers of the Raghu-king were searching along that path, meanwhile the great king, surrounded by his great army, arrived.
Verse 4 (padma.5.40.4)
पप्रच्छ सेवकान्सर्वान्कुत्राश्वो मम सांप्रतम् । न दृश्यते कथं वाहः स्वर्णपत्रसुशोभितः
papraccha sevakānsarvānkutrāśvo mama sāṁpratam na dṛśyate kathaṁ vāhaḥ svarṇapatrasuśobhitaḥ
He asked all his servants: "Where now is my horse? Why is that horse, resplendent with its golden leaf, not seen?"
Verse 5 (padma.5.40.5)
इति तद्वचनं श्रुत्वा सेवकास्ते हयानुगाः । प्रोचुर्नाथ मनोवेगो वाहः केनापि कानने
iti tadvacanaṁ śrutvā sevakāste hayānugāḥ procurnātha manovego vāhaḥ kenāpi kānane
Hearing these words, those servants, followers of the horse, said: "My lord, the mind-swift horse has, in this forest, by someone —
Verse 6 (padma.5.40.6)
हृतो न लक्ष्यते तस्मादस्माभिर्मार्गकोविदैः । तदत्र यत्नः कर्तव्यो हयप्राप्तिं प्रति प्रभो
hṛto na lakṣyate tasmādasmābhirmārgakovidaiḥ tadatra yatnaḥ kartavyo hayaprāptiṁ prati prabho
— been taken, and it cannot be found by us, though skilled in tracking. Therefore, O lord, effort must be made here to recover the horse."
Verse 7 (padma.5.40.7)
तेषां वचनमाकर्ण्य पप्रच्छ सुमतिं नृपः । शत्रुघ्नः शत्रुसंहारकारीमोहनरूपधृक्
teṣāṁ vacanamākarṇya papraccha sumatiṁ nṛpaḥ śatrughnaḥ śatrusaṁhārakārīmohanarūpadhṛk
Hearing their words, the king, Shatrughna, destroyer of foes, bearer of a bewitching form, asked Sumati.
Verse 8 (padma.5.40.8)
शत्रुघ्न उवाच। कोऽत्र राजा निवसति कथं वाहस्य संगमः । कियद्बलं भूमिपतेर्येन मेऽद्य हृतो हयः
śatrughna uvāca ko'tra rājā nivasati kathaṁ vāhasya saṁgamaḥ kiyadbalaṁ bhūmipaterena me'dya hṛto hayaḥ
Shatrughna said: "What king dwells here? How did my horse come to be here? How great is the strength of this lord of the earth, by whom my horse has today been taken?"
Verse 9 (padma.5.40.9)
सुमतिरुवाच। राजन्देवपुरं ह्येतद्देवेनैव विनिर्मितम् । कैलासमिव दुर्गम्यं वैरिसंघैः सुसंहतैः
sumatiruvāca rājandevapuraṁ hyetaddevenaiva vinirmitam kailāsamiva durgamyaṁ vairisaṁghaiḥ susaṁhataiḥ
Sumati said: "O king, this is Devapura, built by a god himself, hard to reach, like Kailasa, even for hosts of enemies banded well together.
Verse 10 (padma.5.40.10)
अस्मिन्वीरमणी राजा महाशूरः प्रतापवान् । राज्यं करोति धर्मेण शिवेन परिरक्षितः
asminvīramaṇī rājā mahāśūraḥ pratāpavān rājyaṁ karoti dharmeṇa śivena parirakṣitaḥ
Here King Viramani, a great hero, mighty in valor, rules his kingdom through dharma, protected by Shiva.
Verse 11 (padma.5.40.11)
योऽसौ प्रलयकारी स आस्ते भक्त्या वशीकृतः । चंद्रचूडः स्वभक्तस्य पक्षपातं सृजन्सदा
yo'sau pralayakārī sa āste bhaktyā vaśīkṛtaḥ caṁdracūḍaḥ svabhaktasya pakṣapātaṁ sṛjansadā
He who is the very agent of universal dissolution abides there, subdued by devotion — the moon-crested one, ever showing favor to his own devotee.
Verse 12 (padma.5.40.12)
तस्मादत्र महद्युद्धं गृहीतश्चेद्भविष्यति । यत्ताः संतः प्रकुर्वंतु रक्षणं कटकस्य हि
tasmādatra mahadyuddhaṁ gṛhītaścedbhaviṣyati yattāḥ saṁtaḥ prakurvaṁtu rakṣaṇaṁ kaṭakasya hi
Therefore a great battle will occur here, if the issue is pressed; let those present take care, indeed, for the protection of the army."
Verse 13 (padma.5.40.13)
एवं श्रुत्वा स शत्रुघ्नः सर्वभूपशिरोमणिः । सैन्यव्यूहं रचित्वासौ तिष्ठति स्म महायशाः
evaṁ śrutvā sa śatrughnaḥ sarvabhūpaśiromaṇiḥ sainyavyūhaṁ racitvāsau tiṣṭhati sma mahāyaśāḥ
Hearing this, that crest-jewel of all kings, Shatrughna, of great renown, arranged his army in battle-formation and remained ready.
Verse 14 (padma.5.40.14)
अथ तं सुखमासीनं मंत्रयंतं सुमंत्रिणा । आजगाम स देवर्षिर्युद्धकौतुकसंयुतः
atha taṁ sukhamāsīnaṁ maṁtrayaṁtaṁ sumaṁtriṇā ājagāma sa devarṣiryuddhakautukasaṁyutaḥ
Then, as he sat comfortably, taking counsel with his good minister, that divine sage arrived, eager for the excitement of battle.
Verse 15 (padma.5.40.15)
तमागतं मुनिं दृष्ट्वा शत्रुघ्नस्तपसां निधिम् । अभ्युत्थायासने स्थाप्य मधुपर्कमथार्पयत्
tamāgataṁ muniṁ dṛṣṭvā śatrughnastapasāṁ nidhim abhyutthāyāsane sthāpya madhuparkamathārpayat
Seeing that sage arrive, that treasury of austerity, Shatrughna rose up, seated him upon a seat, and then offered him madhuparka.
Verse 16 (padma.5.40.16)
स्वागतेन च संतुष्टं नारदं मुनिसत्तमम् । उवाच प्रीणयन्वाचा वाक्यवादविशारदः
svāgatena ca saṁtuṣṭaṁ nāradaṁ munisattamam uvāca prīṇayanvācā vākyavādaviśāradaḥ
And he, skilled in speech and discourse, addressed Narada, best of sages, satisfied with the welcome, in words that pleased him.
Verse 17 (padma.5.40.17)
शत्रुघ्न उवाच। मदीयोऽश्व कुत्र विप्र कथयस्व महामते । न लक्ष्यते गतिस्तस्य सेवकैर्मम कोविदैः
śatrughna uvāca madīyo'śva kutra vipra kathayasva mahāmate na lakṣyate gatistasya sevakairmama kovidaiḥ
Shatrughna said: "O Brahmin, O one of great wisdom, tell me where my horse is; its course cannot be discerned even by my skilled servants.
Verse 18 (padma.5.40.18)
शंस तं येन वा नीतं क्षत्त्रियेण च मानिना । कथमत्र हयप्राप्तिर्भविष्यति तपोधन
śaṁsa taṁ yena vā nītaṁ kṣattriyeṇa ca māninā kathamatra hayaprāptirbhaviṣyati tapodhana
Tell me by which proud Kshatriya it has been taken; how, O one rich in austerity, shall the recovery of the horse come about here?"
Verse 19 (padma.5.40.19)
इति वाक्यं समाकर्ण्य शत्रुघ्नस्य स नारदः । उवाच वीणां रणयन्गायन्रामकथां मुहुः
iti vākyaṁ samākarṇya śatrughnasya sa nāradaḥ uvāca vīṇāṁ raṇayangāyanrāmakathāṁ muhuḥ
Hearing these words of Shatrughna, Narada, sounding his veena and singing the tale of Rama again and again, spoke:
Verse 20 (padma.5.40.20)
नारद उवाच। एतद्देवपुरं राजन्भूपो वीरमणिर्महान् । तत्पुत्रेण वनस्थेन गृहीतस्तव वाजिराट्
nārada uvāca etaddevapuraṁ rājanbhūpo vīramaṇirmahān tatputreṇa vanasthena gṛhītastava vājirāṭ
Narada said: "O king, this is Devapura; the great king here is Viramani. By his son, who was in the forest, your king of horses has been seized.
Verse 21 (padma.5.40.21)
तत्र युद्धं महत्तेऽद्य भविष्यति सुदारुणम् । अत्र वीराः पतिष्यंति बलशौर्यसमन्विताः
tatra yuddhaṁ mahatte'dya bhaviṣyati sudāruṇam atra vīrāḥ patiṣyaṁti balaśauryasamanvitāḥ
There, today, a great and most terrible battle shall take place for you; here heroes, endowed with strength and valor, shall fall.
Verse 22 (padma.5.40.22)
तस्मादत्र महायत्नात्स्थातव्यं ते महाबल । रचय व्यूहरचनां दुर्गमां परसैनिकैः
tasmādatra mahāyatnātsthātavyaṁ te mahābala racaya vyūharacanāṁ durgamāṁ parasainikaiḥ
Therefore, O mighty one, you must stand here with great effort; arrange a battle-formation impenetrable to the enemy soldiers.
Verse 23 (padma.5.40.23)
जयस्ते भविता राजन्कृच्छ्रेणास्मान्नृपोत्तमात् । रामं को नु पराजीयाद्भुवने सकले ह्यपि
jayaste bhavitā rājankṛcchreṇāsmānnṛpottamāt rāmaṁ ko nu parājīyādbhuvane sakale hyapi
Your victory, O king, shall come, though with great difficulty, over this excellent king; who indeed could conquer Rama, even in the entire universe?"
Verse 24 (padma.5.40.24)
इत्युक्त्वांतर्दधे विप्रो नभसि स्थितवांस्ततः । युद्धं सुदारुणं द्रक्ष्यन्देवदानवयोरिव
ityuktvāṁtardadhe vipro nabhasi sthitavāṁstataḥ yuddhaṁ sudāruṇaṁ drakṣyandevadānavayoriva
Having said this, the Brahmin vanished, and remained then in the sky, to watch that most terrible battle, as if between gods and demons.
Verse 25 (padma.5.40.25)
शेष उवाच। अथ राजा वीरमणिः सर्वशूरशिरोमणिः । पटहं घोषितुं स्वीये पुरमध्ये महारवम्
śeṣa uvāca atha rājā vīramaṇiḥ sarvaśūraśiromaṇiḥ paṭahaṁ ghoṣituṁ svīye puramadhye mahāravam
Shesha said: Then King Viramani, crest-jewel of all heroes, ordered the great-sounding war-drum to be proclaimed in the midst of his own city.
Verse 26 (padma.5.40.26)
आह्वयामास सेनान्यं रिपुवीरं महोन्नतम् । कथयामास च क्षिप्रं मेघगंभीरया गिरा
āhvayāmāsa senānyaṁ ripuvīraṁ mahonnatam kathayāmāsa ca kṣipraṁ meghagaṁbhīrayā girā
He summoned his general, Ripuvira, most exalted, and spoke to him quickly, in a voice deep as thunderclouds.
Verse 27 (padma.5.40.27)
वीरमणिरुवाच। सेनानीः पटहस्याज्ञां देहि मे शोभने पुरे । तच्छ्रुत्वा मे सुसन्नद्धाः शत्रुघ्नं प्रति यांतु ते
vīramaṇiruvāca senānīḥ paṭahasyājñāṁ dehi me śobhane pure tacchrutvā me susannaddhāḥ śatrughnaṁ prati yāṁtu te
Viramani said: "O general, give my order for the drum in my splendid city; hearing it, let my well-armed men go forth against Shatrughna."
Verse 28 (padma.5.40.28)
इति वाक्यं समाकर्ण्य राज्ञो वीरमणेस्तदा । कारयामास पटहं महारवनिनादितम्
iti vākyaṁ samākarṇya rājño vīramaṇestadā kārayāmāsa paṭahaṁ mahāravanināditam
Hearing this word of King Viramani, he then had the war-drum sounded, resonant with a great roar.
Verse 29 (padma.5.40.29)
गेहे गेहे च रथ्यायां श्रूयते पटहध्वनिः । शत्रुघ्नं यांतु ये सर्वे वीरा राजपुरे स्थिताः
gehe gehe ca rathyāyāṁ śrūyate paṭahadhvaniḥ śatrughnaṁ yāṁtu ye sarve vīrā rājapure sthitāḥ
In house after house, and in the streets, the sound of the war-drum is heard: "Let all the heroes stationed in the king's city go forth against Shatrughna.
Verse 30 (padma.5.40.30)
ये वै राज्ञः समुल्लंघ्य शासनं वीरमानिनः । पुत्रा वा भ्रातरो वापि ते वध्याः स्युर्नृपाज्ञया
ye vai rājñaḥ samullaṁghya śāsanaṁ vīramāninaḥ putrā vā bhrātaro vāpi te vadhyāḥ syurnṛpājñayā
Those who, proud of their heroism, transgress the king's decree, be they sons or brothers, shall be liable to death by the king's command.
Verse 31 (padma.5.40.31)
शृण्वंतु वीराः पुनरप्याह ते पटहे रवम् । श्रुत्वा विधीयतामाशु कर्तव्यं मा विलंबितम्
śṛṇvaṁtu vīrāḥ punarapyāha te paṭahe ravam śrutvā vidhīyatāmāśu kartavyaṁ mā vilaṁbitam
Let the heroes listen again to this — the drum speaks its roar to you; hearing it, let what must be done be done at once, without delay."
Verse 32 (padma.5.40.32)
शेष उवाच। इति पटहरवं स्वकर्णगोचरं । नरवरवीरवरा ययुर्नृपोत्तमम् । कनककवचभूषितस्वदेहाः । समरमहोत्सव हृष्टचित्तकोशाः
śeṣa uvāca iti paṭaharavaṁ svakarṇagocaraṁ naravaravīravarā yayurnṛpottamam kanakakavacabhūṣitasvadehāḥ samaramahotsava hṛṣṭacittakośāḥ
Shesha said: Hearing the roar of the war-drum come within their own ears, the most excellent among heroic men went to that excellent king, their own bodies adorned with golden armor, their hearts and treasuries joyful with the great festival of battle.
Verse 33 (padma.5.40.33)
केचिद्ययुः शिरस्त्राणं धृत्वा शिरसि शोभनम् । कवचेन सुशोभाढ्याः शतकोटिसुशोभिताः
kecidyayuḥ śirastrāṇaṁ dhṛtvā śirasi śobhanam kavacena suśobhāḍhyāḥ śatakoṭisuśobhitāḥ
Some went, bearing a splendid helmet upon the head, resplendent with armor, adorned by hundreds of millions.
Verse 34 (padma.5.40.34)
रथेन हययुग्मेन मणिकांचनशोभिना । ययुस्ते राजसंदेशान्नृवरालयमुन्मदाः
rathena hayayugmena maṇikāṁcanaśobhinā yayuste rājasaṁdeśānnṛvarālayamunmadāḥ
By chariot, yoked with pairs of horses, resplendent with jewels and gold, elated, they went, at the king's command, to the palace of that excellent man.
Verse 35 (padma.5.40.35)
केचिन्मतंगजैर्मत्तैः केचिद्वाहैः सुशोभनैः । ययुर्नपगृहं सर्वे राजसंदेशकारकाः
kecinmataṁgajairmattaiḥ kecidvāhaiḥ suśobhanaiḥ yayurnapagṛhaṁ sarve rājasaṁdeśakārakāḥ
Some on rutting elephants, some on splendid horses — all, executors of the king's command, went to the royal house.
Verse 36 (padma.5.40.36)
विविक्तस्वर्णकवचशिरस्त्राणसुशोभितः । रुक्मांगदोऽपि च निजे रथे तिष्ठन्मनोजवे
viviktasvarṇakavacaśirastrāṇasuśobhitaḥ rukmāṁgado'pi ca nije rathe tiṣṭhanmanojave
Rukmangada too, resplendent with pure golden armor and helmet, stood upon his own chariot, swift as thought.
Verse 37 (padma.5.40.37)
शुभांगदोऽनुजस्तस्य महारत्नमयं दधत् । कवचं वपुषि श्रेष्ठं निजं प्रायाद्रणोत्सवे
śubhāṁgado'nujastasya mahāratnamayaṁ dadhat kavacaṁ vapuṣi śreṣṭhaṁ nijaṁ prāyādraṇotsave
His younger brother Shubhangada, bearing upon his body an excellent armor made of great jewels, his own, set forth for the festival of battle.
Verse 38 (padma.5.40.38)
राजभ्राता वीरसिंहः सर्वशस्त्रास्त्रकोविदः । ययौ नृपाज्ञया तत्र शासनं भूमिपस्य हि
rājabhrātā vīrasiṁhaḥ sarvaśastrāstrakovidaḥ yayau nṛpājñayā tatra śāsanaṁ bhūmipasya hi
The king's brother, Virasingha, skilled in all weapons and missiles, went there, at the king's command, indeed by the ruler's order.
Verse 39 (padma.5.40.39)
जामेयस्तस्य राज्ञोऽपि बलमित्र इति स्मृतः । सन्नद्धः कवची खड्गी जगाम नृपमंदिरम्
jāmeyastasya rājño'pi balamitra iti smṛtaḥ sannaddhaḥ kavacī khaḍgī jagāma nṛpamaṁdiram
The king's own sister's son too, known as Balamitra, armed, mailed, sword in hand, went to the royal palace.
Verse 40 (padma.5.40.40)
सेनानी रिपुवारोऽपि सेनां तां चतुरंगिणीम् । सज्जां विधाय भूपाय न्यवेदयदथो महान्
senānī ripuvāro'pi senāṁ tāṁ caturaṁgiṇīm sajjāṁ vidhāya bhūpāya nyavedayadatho mahān
The general Ripuvara too, having prepared that fourfold army, that great one then reported it to the king.
Verse 41 (padma.5.40.41)
अथ राजा वीरमणिः सर्वशस्त्रास्त्रपूरितम् । मणिसृष्टोच्चचक्रोच्चमारोहत्स्यंदनोत्तमम्
atha rājā vīramaṇiḥ sarvaśastrāstrapūritam maṇisṛṣṭoccacakroccamārohatsyaṁdanottamam
Then King Viramani mounted an excellent chariot, filled with every weapon and missile, with high wheels fashioned of jewels.
Verse 42 (padma.5.40.42)
ततो वीरार्णवे शंखनिनादश्च समंततः । श्रूयते कातरान्वीरान्प्रेरयन्निव संगरे
tato vīrārṇave śaṁkhaninādaśca samaṁtataḥ śrūyate kātarānvīrānprerayanniva saṁgare
Then, in that ocean of heroes, the sound of conches was heard on every side, as if urging the fainthearted heroes onward into the fray.
Verse 43 (padma.5.40.43)
भेर्यः समंततो जघ्नुः शुभवादकवादिताः । अनीकान्यत्र तस्यासन्संग्रामाय प्रतस्थुषः
bheryaḥ samaṁtato jaghnuḥ śubhavādakavāditāḥ anīkānyatra tasyāsansaṁgrāmāya pratasthuṣaḥ
War-drums were beaten on every side, struck by skilled players; there the divisions of his army set out for battle.
Verse 44 (padma.5.40.44)
सर्वे कृतस्वस्त्ययनाः सर्वाभरणभूषिताः । सर्वशस्त्रास्त्रसंपूर्णा ययुः समरमण्डलम्
sarve kṛtasvastyayanāḥ sarvābharaṇabhūṣitāḥ sarvaśastrāstrasaṁpūrṇā yayuḥ samaramaṇḍalam
All, having performed the rite for auspiciousness, adorned with every ornament, full of every weapon, went forth to the field of battle.
Verse 45 (padma.5.40.45)
भेरीशंखनिनादेन पूरिताश्च नगा गुहाः । आकारितुं गतः किं नु तद्रवः स्वर्गसंस्थितान्
bherīśaṁkhaninādena pūritāśca nagā guhāḥ ākārituṁ gataḥ kiṁ nu tadravaḥ svargasaṁsthitān
Filled with the sound of drums and conches, the mountains and caves — did that roar perhaps go to summon even those dwelling in heaven?
Verse 46 (padma.5.40.46)
तस्मिन्कोलाहले वृत्ते राजा वीरमणिर्महान् । रणोत्साहेन संयुक्तो ययौ प्रधनमंडलम्
tasminkolāhale vṛtte rājā vīramaṇirmahān raṇotsāhena saṁyukto yayau pradhanamaṁḍalam
In that great uproar, King Viramani, filled with battle-enthusiasm, went forth to the field of combat.
Verse 47 (padma.5.40.47)
आगत्य संस्थितस्तावद्रथपत्तिसमाकुलम् । समुद्र इव तत्स्थानात्प्लावितुं पुरुषानयात्
āgatya saṁsthitastāvadrathapattisamākulam samudra iva tatsthānātplāvituṁ puruṣānayāt
Arriving, he stood there, that place thronged with chariots and foot-soldiers, like an ocean, bringing forth men enough to flood the very location.
Verse 48 (padma.5.40.48)
तदागतं बलं दृष्ट्वा रथिभिः शस्त्रकोविदैः । कोलाहलीकृतं सर्वमुवाच सुमतिं नृपः
tadāgataṁ balaṁ dṛṣṭvā rathibhiḥ śastrakovidaiḥ kolāhalīkṛtaṁ sarvamuvāca sumatiṁ nṛpaḥ
Seeing that army arrived, made all tumultuous by charioteers skilled in weapons, the king said to Sumati:
Verse 49 (padma.5.40.49)
शत्रुघ्न उवाच। समागतो वीरमणिर्मम वाजिधरो बली । योद्धुं मां महता भूयः सैन्येन चतुरंगिणा
śatrughna uvāca samāgato vīramaṇirmama vājidharo balī yoddhuṁ māṁ mahatā bhūyaḥ sainyena caturaṁginā
Shatrughna said: "Viramani, the strong one who now holds my horse, has arrived to fight me again, with a mighty fourfold army.
Verse 50 (padma.5.40.50)
कथं युद्धं प्रकर्तव्यं के योत्स्यंति बलोत्कटाः । तान्सर्वान्दिश मे वीरान्यथा स्याज्जय ईप्सितः
kathaṁ yuddhaṁ prakartavyaṁ ke yotsyaṁti balotkaṭāḥ tānsarvāndiśa me vīrānyathā syājjaya īpsitaḥ
How should this battle be conducted? Who among our mighty ones shall fight? Point out to me all those heroes, so that the desired victory may be won."
Verse 51 (padma.5.40.51)
सुमतिरुवाच। स्वामिन्नसौ महाराजो महासैन्यपरीवृतः । समागतः स युद्धार्थं शिवभक्तिसमन्वितः
sumatiruvāca svāminnasau mahārājo mahāsainyaparīvṛtaḥ samāgataḥ sa yuddhārthaṁ śivabhaktisamanvitaḥ
Sumati said: "My lord, this great king, surrounded by his great army, has arrived for battle, endowed with devotion to Shiva.
Verse 52 (padma.5.40.52)
सांप्रतं युद्ध्यतां वीरः पुष्कलः परमास्त्रवित् । अन्येपि नीलरत्नाद्या योद्धारो युद्धकोविदाः
sāṁprataṁ yuddhyatāṁ vīraḥ puṣkalaḥ paramāstravit anyepi nīlaratnādyā yoddhāro yuddhakovidāḥ
Now let the hero Pushkala, most learned in weapons, fight; and let the other warriors too, Nilaratna and the rest, skilled in battle, join in.
Verse 53 (padma.5.40.53)
शिवेन सह योद्धव्यं राज्ञा वा भवतानघ । द्वंद्वयुद्धेन जेतव्यो महाबलपराक्रमः
śivena saha yoddhavyaṁ rājñā vā bhavatānagha dvaṁdvayuddhena jetavyo mahābalaparākramaḥ
But he who must fight with Shiva, or with the king himself, must be you, O sinless one; that one of mighty strength and valor must be conquered through single combat.
Verse 54 (padma.5.40.54)
अनेन विधिना राजञ्जयस्तेऽत्र भविष्यति । पश्चाद्यद्रोचते स्वामिंस्तत्कुरुष्व महामते
anena vidhinā rājañjayaste'tra bhaviṣyati paścādyadrocate svāmiṁstatkuruṣva mahāmate
By this method, O king, your victory here shall come about; afterward, my lord, whatever pleases you, do that, O one of great wisdom."
Verse 55 (padma.5.40.55)
शेष उवाच। इति वाक्यं समाकर्ण्य शत्रुघ्नः परवीरहा । सुभटानादिदेशाथ युद्धाय कृतनिश्चयः
śeṣa uvāca iti vākyaṁ samākarṇya śatrughnaḥ paravīrahā subhaṭānādideśātha yuddhāya kṛtaniścayaḥ
Shesha said: Hearing these words, Shatrughna, slayer of enemy heroes, his mind resolved for battle, then commanded his fine warriors.
Verse 56 (padma.5.40.56)
सर्वैः ससैन्यैर्युद्धार्थं राजभिः शस्त्रकोविदैः । यथा स्यान्मे जयः क्षिप्रं यतितव्यं तथा पुनः
sarvaiḥ sasainyairyuddhārthaṁ rājabhiḥ śastrakovidaiḥ yathā syānme jayaḥ kṣipraṁ yatitavyaṁ tathā punaḥ
"By all of you, together with your armies, weapon-skilled kings, effort must be made for battle, so that my victory may come swiftly."
Verse 57 (padma.5.40.57)
जयार्थं राघवस्यैव श्रुत्वा ते रणकोविदाः । महोत्साहेन संयुक्ता ययुर्योद्धुं तु सैनिकैः
jayārthaṁ rāghavasyaiva śrutvā te raṇakovidāḥ mahotsāhena saṁyuktā yayuryoddhuṁ tu sainikaiḥ
Hearing this, those warriors, skilled in battle, filled with great enthusiasm, went forth, together with their soldiers, to fight for the victory of Raghava himself.
