Rama's Royal Coronation
Verse 1 (padma.5.4.1)
vātsyāyana uvāca bhujagādhīśvareśāna dharābhāradharakṣama śṛṇvekaṁ saṁśayaṁ mahyaṁ kṛpayā kathayasva tam
Vatsyayana said: O lord of the lords of serpents, able to bear the earth's burden, hear one doubt of mine and kindly resolve it.
Verse 2 (padma.5.4.2)
raghunāthasya gamanaṁ vanaṁ prati yadā hyabhūt tadā prabhṛti dehena sthitā śūnyena cetasā
When Raghunatha's departure to the forest took place, from that time his mother remained present in body but empty in mind —
Verse 3 (padma.5.4.3)
tadviprayogavidhurā kṛśadehātiduḥkhitā sumukhānmaṁtriṇaḥ śrutvā raghunāthaṁ samāgatam
afflicted by that separation, her body wasted, deeply grieved — hearing from the minister Sumukha that Raghunatha had returned —
Verse 4 (padma.5.4.4)
kathaṁ jaharṣa kimabhūtkīdṛśaṁ tatra cihnitam rāmacaṁdrasya saṁdeśahartāraṁ kimuvāca sā
how did she rejoice? What happened? What signs appeared there? What did she say to the bearer of Ramachandra's message?
Verse 5 (padma.5.4.5)
etanme saṁśayaṁ chiṁdhi raghunāthaguṇodayam yathāvacchṛṇvate mahyaṁ kathayasva prasādataḥ
Please resolve this doubt of mine — this rising tide of Raghunatha's virtues — tell it to me properly, as I listen, out of your grace.
Verse 6 (padma.5.4.6)

Shesha said: Well asked, O greatly fortunate one, foremost among the twice-born! Listen with single-minded attention as I tell it directly from my own words.
Verse 7 (padma.5.4.7)
sā vai tadvadanāṁbhoja cyutaṁ rāmāgamāmṛtam pītvā pītvā babhūvāho sthagitāṁgena vihvalā
Drinking again and again the nectar of Rama's coming that fell from Sumukha's lotus-mouth, she — ah! — became overwhelmed, her limbs frozen still.
Verse 8 (padma.5.4.8)
kiṁ me svapno vimūḍhāyāḥ kiṁ vā bhramakaraṁ vacaḥ mamavai maṁdabhāgyāyāḥ kathaṁ rāmekṣaṇaṁ punaḥ
"Is this a dream of my bewildered mind, or words meant only to deceive? How could I, so ill-fated, ever see Rama again?"
Verse 9 (padma.5.4.9)
bahunā tapasā kṛtvā prāpto'yaṁ vai sutaḥ śiśuḥ kenacinmama pāpena viprayogaṁ gataḥ punaḥ
"After much penance this child, my son, was obtained; by some sin of mine he has gone into separation once more."
Verse 10 (padma.5.4.10)

sumaṁtrinkuśalī rāmaḥ sītālakṣmaṇasaṁyutaḥ kathaṁ māṁ smarate vīro vanacārī suduḥkhitām
"O good minister, is Rama, together with Sita and Lakshmana, well? How does that hero, wandering the forest, remember me, so deeply sorrowful?"
Verse 11 (padma.5.4.11)

Thus she lamented aloud, lost in memory of Raghunatha, so bewildered she spoke nothing of herself and only of him. Sumukha too, seeing the mother so deeply grieved,
Verse 12 (padma.5.4.12)

fanned her with the hem of his garment, and she regained her senses; he spoke to the mother gently, words that brought joy, again and again.
Verse 13 (padma.5.4.13)
raghunāthāgamasmāra hṛṣṭāṁ tāṁ vyadadhātpunaḥ mātarviddhi gṛhaṁ prāptaṁ raghunāthaṁ salakṣmaṇam
Reminding her of Raghunatha's arrival, he made her joyful once again: "Mother, know that Raghunatha, with Lakshmana, has reached home."
Verse 14 (padma.5.4.14)
