Meeting with Agastya
Verse 1 (padma.5.5.1)
śeṣa uvāca athābhiṣiktaṁ rāmaṁ tu tuṣṭuvuḥ praṇatāḥ surāḥ rāvaṇābhidhadaityeṁdra vadhaharṣitamānasāḥ
Shesha said: Then the bowing gods, their hearts delighted at the slaying of the demon-lord named Ravana, praised the newly anointed Rama.
Verse 2 (padma.5.5.2)
devā ūcuḥ jaya dāśarathe surārtihañjayajaya dānavavaṁśadāhaka jaya devavarāṁganāgaṇagrahaṇavyagrakarāridāraka
The gods said: "Victory, O son of Dasharatha, remover of the gods' affliction! Victory, victory, burner of the demon race! Victory, splitter of the hands of the foe intent on seizing the finest of celestial women —"
Verse 3 (padma.5.5.3)
tavayaddanujeṁdra nāśanaṁ kavayo varṇayituṁ samutsukāḥ pralaye jagatāṁtatīḥ punargrasase tvaṁ bhuvaneśalīlayā
"Poets are eager to describe your destruction of that lord of demons — just as, at the world's dissolution, you swallow up all creation again, at mere play, O lord of the universe."
Verse 4 (padma.5.5.4)
jaya janmajarādiduḥkhakaiḥ parimuktaprabaloddharoddhara jaya dharmakarānvayāṁbudhau kṛtajanmannajarāmarācyuta
"Victory, mighty deliverer, wholly free from the sorrows of birth, old age, and the rest! Victory, ocean of righteous deeds, unaging, undying, unfallen — though you have taken birth!"
Verse 5 (padma.5.5.5)
tava devavarasya nāmabhirbahupāpā api te pavitritāḥ kimu sādhudvijavaryapūrvakāḥ sutanuṁ mānuṣatāmupāgatāḥ
"By your very names, O best of gods, even the greatly sinful are purified — how much more, then, the virtuous who, led by the finest of the twice-born, have attained this human form!"
Verse 6 (padma.5.5.6)
haraviriṁcinutaṁ tava pādayoryugalamīpsitakāmasamṛddhidam hṛdi pavitrayavādikacihnitaiḥ suracitaṁ manasā spṛhayāmahe
"We long in our hearts for that pair of your feet, praised by Hara and Brahma, granter of the fulfillment of every desire, marked with the pure signs fashioned by the gods."
Verse 7 (padma.5.5.7)
yadi bhavānna dadhātyabhayaṁ bhuvo madanamūrti tiraskarakāṁtibhṛt suragaṇā hi kathaṁ sukhinaḥ punarnanubhavaṁti ghṛṇāmaya pāvana
"If you did not grant fearlessness to the earth, O form whose beauty eclipses even Kama's, how then would the hosts of gods ever again know happiness, O merciful, purifying one?"
Verse 8 (padma.5.5.8)
yadā yadāsmāndanujāhi duḥkhadāstadā tadā tvaṁ bhuvi janmabhāgbhaveḥ ajo'vyayo'pīśavaro'pi sanvibho svabhāvamāsthāya nijaṁ nijārcitaḥ
"Whenever the demon race brings us sorrow, then, O lord, though unborn, imperishable, and the Supreme Ruler, you take birth on earth, true to your own nature, worshipped by your own devotees."
Verse 9 (padma.5.5.9)
mṛtasudhāsadṛśairaghanāśanaiḥ sucaritairavakīrya mahītalam amanujairguṇaśaṁsibhirīḍitaḥ praviśa cāśu punarhi svakaṁ padam
"Having strewn the earth's surface with your noble deeds, sin-destroying as the nectar of immortality, praised by the celestials proclaiming your virtues — now enter once more, swiftly, your own abode."
Verse 10 (padma.5.5.10)
anādirādyojararūpadhārī hārī kirīṭī makaradhvajābhaḥ jayaṁ karotu prasabhaṁ hatāriḥ smarāri saṁsevitapādapadmaḥ
"Beginningless, the primal one, wearing a form untouched by age, captivating, crowned, radiant as Kama, having slain his foes, his lotus feet served by the foe of Kama's foe — may he grant victory by his very might!"
Verse 11 (padma.5.5.11)
ityuktvā te surāḥ sarve brahmeṁdrapramukhā muhuḥ praṇemurarināśena prīṇitā raghunāyakam
Having said this, all the gods, led by Brahma and Indra, gladdened by the enemy's destruction, bowed again and again to Raghunatha.
Verse 12 (padma.5.5.12)
iti stutyātisaṁhṛṣṭo raghunātho mahāyaśāḥ provāca tānsurānvīkṣya praṇatānnatakaṁdharān
Thus greatly pleased by their praise, Raghunatha of great fame, seeing those gods bowed with lowered necks, spoke to them —
Verse 13 (padma.5.5.13)
śrīrāma uvāca surā vṛṇuta me yūyaṁ varaṁ kiṁcitsudurllabham yaṁ ko'pi devo danujo na yakṣaḥ prāpa sādaraḥ
Shri Rama said: "O gods, choose from me some boon, however rare — one that no god, demon, or yaksha has ever obtained with such regard."
Verse 14 (padma.5.5.14)
surā ūcuḥ svāminbhagavataḥ sarvaṁ prāptamasmābhiruttamam yadayaṁ nihataḥ śatrurasmākaṁ tu daśānanaḥ
The gods said: "O lord, O divine one, we have already obtained everything supreme, in that this enemy of ours, the ten-headed one, has been slain."
Verse 15 (padma.5.5.15)
yadāyadā'suro'smākaṁ bādhāṁ paridadhāti bhoḥ tadā tadeti kartavyametāvadvairināśanam
"Whenever any demon causes us trouble, O lord, then, at that time, this alone should be done — the destruction of that enemy."
Verse 16 (padma.5.5.16)
tathetyuktvā punarvīraḥ provāca raghunaṁdanaḥ śrīrāma uvāca surāḥ śṛṇuta madvākyamādareṇa samanvitāḥ
Having said, "So be it," the hero, delight of the Raghus, spoke again. Shri Rama said: "O gods, listen to my words with due reverence."
Verse 17 (padma.5.5.17)
bhavatkṛtaṁ madīyairvaiguṇairgrathitamadbhutam stotraṁ paṭhiṣyati muhuḥ prātarniśi sakṛnnaraḥ
"This wondrous hymn, woven from my own virtues, which you yourselves have composed — whoever recites it, morning and evening, again and again, or even once —"
Verse 18 (padma.5.5.18)
tasya vairi parābhūtirna bhaviṣyati dāruṇā na ca dāridryasaṁyogo na ca vyādhiparābhavau
"for him there shall be no dreadful defeat by enemies, nor union with poverty, nor affliction by disease."
Verse 19 (padma.5.5.19)
madīyacaraṇadvaṁdve bhaktisteṣāṁ tu bhūyasī bhaviṣyati mudāyukte svāṁte puṁsāṁ tu pāṭhataḥ
"Devotion to this pair of my feet shall grow ever greater, with a joyful heart, in those men who recite it."
Verse 20 (padma.5.5.20)
ityuktvā so'bhavattūṣṇīṁ naradevaśiromaṇiḥ surāḥ sarve prahṛṣṭāste yayurlokaṁ svakaṁ svakam
Having said this, that crest-jewel among kings fell silent; all the gods, greatly delighted, returned each to his own realm.
Verse 21 (padma.5.5.21)
raghunātho'pi bhrātṝṁstānpālayaṁstātavadbudhān prajāḥ putrāniva svīyāllā~laya~llokanāyakaḥ
Raghunatha too, protecting those wise brothers of his like a father, and cherishing his own subjects as though they were his own children, remained the guide of all his people.
Verse 22 (padma.5.5.22)
yasmiñchāsati lokānāṁ nākālamaraṇaṁ nṛṇām na rogādi parābhūtirgṛheṣu ca mahīyasī
Under his rule the people suffered no untimely death, nor were households greatly troubled by disease and its like.
Verse 23 (padma.5.5.23)
netiḥ kadāpi ddaśyeta vairijaṁ bhayameva ca vṛkṣāḥ sadaiva phalino mahī bhūyiṣṭhadhānyakā
Injustice was never seen anywhere, nor fear born of enemies; trees were ever laden with fruit, the earth abundant in grain.
Verse 24 (padma.5.5.24)
putrapautraparīvāra sanāthī kṛtajīvanāḥ kāṁtā saṁyogajasukhairnirastavirahaklamāḥ
All lived their lives secure with sons, grandsons, and family; the weariness of separation was banished by the joys of union with their beloved wives.
Verse 25 (padma.5.5.25)
nityaṁ śrīraghunāthasya pādapadmakathotsukāḥ kadāpi paraniṁdāsu vācasteṣāṁ bhavaṁti na
They remained ever eager for the story of Shri Raghunatha's lotus feet, and their speech never turned to slandering others.
Verse 26 (padma.5.5.26)
kāravo'pi kadā pāpaṁ nācaraṁti manasyaho raghunāthakarāghātaduḥkhaśaṁkābhiśaṁsinaḥ
Ah, even craftsmen, dreading the pain of punishment at Raghunatha's own hand, never committed sin even in thought.
Verse 27 (padma.5.5.27)
sītāpatimukhāloka niścalībhūtalocanāḥ lokā babhūvuḥ satataṁ kāruṇyaparipūritāḥ
The people, their eyes fixed unmoving upon the face of Sita's lord, remained ever filled with compassion.
Verse 28 (padma.5.5.28)
rājyaṁ prāptamasāpatnaṁ samṛddhabalavāhanam ṛṣibhirhṛṣṭapuṣṭaiśca ramyaṁ hāṭakabhūṣaṇaiḥ
He obtained a kingdom without rival, rich in army and mounts, resplendent with healthy, well-nourished sages and with golden ornaments.
Verse 29 (padma.5.5.29)
saṁpuṣṭamiṣṭāpūrtānāṁ dharmāṇāṁ nityakartṛbhiḥ sadā saṁpannasasyaṁ ca suvasukṣetrasaṁyutam
It was enriched by those ever devoted to charity and works of public good; the crops were always abundant, the fields fertile and prosperous.
Verse 30 (padma.5.5.30)
sudeśaṁ suprajaṁ svasthaṁ sutṛṇaṁ bahugodhanam devatāyatanānāṁ ca rājibhiḥ parirājitam
It was blessed with fair lands, good progeny, healthy people, abundant pasture and cattle-wealth, and adorned with rows of temples to the gods.
Verse 31 (padma.5.5.31)
supūrṇā yatra vai grāmāḥ suvittarddhivirājitāḥ supuṣpakṛtrimodyānāḥ susvāduphalapādapāḥ
Its villages were ever full, radiant with wealth and prosperity, adorned with lovely gardens both natural and cultivated, and trees bearing the sweetest fruit.
Verse 32 (padma.5.5.32)
sapadminīkakāsārā yatra rājaṁti bhūmayaḥ sadaṁbhā nimnagā yatra na yatra janatā kvacit
Its land was graced with lotus-ponds and lakes, its rivers ran straight and true, and nowhere was the population lacking.
Verse 33 (padma.5.5.33)
kulānyeva kulīnānāṁ varṇānāṁ nādhanāni ca vibhramo yatra nārīṣu na vidvatsu ca karhicit
There, nobility of family was measured by lineage alone, never by wealth; and fickleness was found neither among women nor, ever, among the learned.
Verse 34 (padma.5.5.34)
nadyaḥ kuṭilagāminyo na yatra viṣaye prajāḥ tamoyuktāḥ kṣapā yatra bahuleṣu na mānavāḥ
There, rivers ran without crookedness, and darkness of ignorance was found nowhere among the people — only the nights themselves, and never the people, were shrouded in dark.
Verse 35 (padma.5.5.35)
rajoyujaḥ striyo yatra nādharmabahulā narāḥ dhanairanaṁdho yatrāsti jano naiva ca bhojane
There, women followed only nature's own course, and men were not given to unrighteousness; the people were blinded neither by the pride of wealth nor by greed at mealtime.
Verse 36 (padma.5.5.36)
anayaḥ syaṁdano yatra na ca vairājapūruṣaḥ daṁḍaḥ paraśukuddālavālavyajanarājiṣu
There, crookedness was found only in the wheels of chariots, and no man ever defied the king's command; the rod of punishment was seen only among the tools — the axe, the hoe, the fan of yak-hair, and their kind —
Verse 37 (padma.5.5.37)
ātapatreṣu nānyatra kvacitkrodhoparodhajaḥ anyatrākṣikavṛṁdebhyaḥ kvacinna paridevanam
and nowhere else; the mark of anger showed only in the ribs of a parasol, nowhere else; lament was found only among rows of eyelashes, nowhere else.
Verse 38 (padma.5.5.38)
ākṣikā eva dṛśyaṁte yatra pāśakapāṇayaḥ jāḍyavārtā jaleṣveva strīmadhyā eva durbalāḥ
Only gamblers were seen with dice in hand; dullness was spoken of only in connection with water; frailty was found only in the slenderness of women's waists.
Verse 39 (padma.5.5.39)
kaṭhorahṛdayā yatra sīmaṁtinyo na mānavāḥ auṣadheṣveva yatrāsti kuṣṭhayogo na mānave
There, neither women nor men were hard-hearted; the word for leprosy-cure applied only to medicinal herbs — no person ever suffered from leprosy.
Verse 40 (padma.5.5.40)
vedho yatra suratneṣu śūlaṁ mūrtikareṣu vai kaṁpaḥ sātvikabhāvottho na bhayātkvāpi kasyacit
There, piercing was done only to fine gems, the chisel's point only in a sculptor's hand; trembling arose only from sattvic devotion, never from fear in anyone.
Verse 41 (padma.5.5.41)
saṁjvaraḥ kāmajo yatra dāridryakaluṣasya ca durllabhatvaṁ sadaivasya sukṛtena ca vastunaḥ
There, fever was only the fever of love, never the wretched fever of poverty; and no good thing earned by virtue was ever hard to obtain.
Verse 42 (padma.5.5.42)
ibhā eva pramattā vai yuddhe vīcyo jalāśaye dānahānirgajeṣveva tīkṣṇā eva hi kaṁṭakāḥ
In battle, only elephants ran wild with fury; only the sea had waves; a failure of giving was found only in elephants running short of musth; only thorns were ever sharp.
Verse 43 (padma.5.5.43)
bāṇeṣu guṇaviśleṣo baṁdhoktiḥ pustake dṛḍhā snehatyāgaḥ khaleṣveva na ca vai svajane jane
A slackened string was found only in bows; talk of firm bonds only in books of grammar; the abandonment of affection was seen only among the wicked, never among one's own kin.
Verse 44 (padma.5.5.44)
taṁ deśaṁ pālayāmāsa lālaya~llālitāḥ prajāḥ dharmaṁ saṁsthāpayandeśe duṣṭe daṁḍadharopamaḥ
Thus he protected that land, cherishing his cherished subjects, and, like the very embodiment of the rod of justice against the wicked, established righteousness throughout the realm.
Verse 45 (padma.5.5.45)
evaṁ pālayato deśaṁ dharmeṇa dharaṇītalam sahasraṁ ca vyatīyurvai varṣāṇyekādaśa prabhoḥ
Thus, as the lord protected the earth with righteousness in this way, eleven thousand years passed by.
Verse 46 (padma.5.5.46)
tatra nīcajanācchrutvā sītāyā apamānatām svāṁ ca niṁdāṁ rajakatastāṁ tatyāja raghūdvahaḥ
Then, hearing from a lowly man of Sita's dishonor, and of his own reputation being slandered by a washerman, the upholder of the Raghu line renounced Sita.
Verse 47 (padma.5.5.47)
pṛthvīṁ pālayamānasya dharmeṇa nṛpatestadā sītāṁ virahitāmekāṁ nideśena surakṣitām
Even while the king protected the earth with righteousness, Sita, though thus set apart and alone, was kept safe by his own instruction.
Verse 48 (padma.5.5.48)
kadācitsaṁsado madhye hyāsīnasya mahāmateḥ ājagāma muniśreṣṭhaḥ kuṁbhotpattirmunirmahān
Once, while the wise king sat in the midst of his assembly, the great sage Agastya, born of a pot, foremost among sages, arrived there.
Verse 49 (padma.5.5.49)
gṛhītvārghyaṁ samuttasthau vasiṣṭhena samanvitaḥ janatābhirmahārājo vārdhiśoṣakamāgatam
Taking up the offering of welcome, the great king rose together with Vasishtha, to receive him who — to the people's eyes — had once dried up the very ocean.
Verse 50 (padma.5.5.50)
svāgatena susaṁbhāvya papraccha tamanāmayam sukhopaviṣṭaṁ viśrāṁtaṁ babhāṣe raghunaṁdanaḥ
Having honored him well with welcome, he asked after his health; and when the sage was seated comfortably and rested, the delight of the Raghus spoke to him —
