The Defeat of the Gods at Mount Drona

Verse 1 (padma.5.44.1)

शेष उवाच। आगत्य सविधे रुद्रं समरांगणमूर्धनि । जगाद हनुमान्वीरः संजिहीर्षुः सुराधिपम्

śeṣa uvāca āgatya savidhe rudraṁ samarāṁgaṇamūrdhani jagāda hanumānvīraḥ saṁjihīrṣuḥ surādhipam

Shesha said: Coming near Rudra at the head of the battlefield, the hero Hanuman, wishing to draw the lord of the gods away from battle, spoke.

Verse 2 (padma.5.44.2)

हनूमानुवाच। त्वं यदाचरसे रुद्र धर्मस्य प्रतिकूलनम् । तस्मात्त्वां शास्तुमिच्छामि रामभक्तवधोद्यतम्

hanūmānuvāca tvaṁ yadācarase rudra dharmasya pratikūlanam tasmāttvāṁ śāstumicchāmi rāmabhaktavadhodyatam

Hanuman said: "O Rudra, since you act contrary to Dharma, intent as you are on slaying a devotee of Rama, I wish now to chastise you."

Verse 3 (padma.5.44.3)

मया पुरा श्रुतं देव ऋषिभिर्बहुधोदितम् । रघुनाथपदस्मारी नित्यं रुद्रः पिनाकभृत्

mayā purā śrutaṁ deva ṛṣibhirbahudhoditam raghunāthapadasmārī nityaṁ rudraḥ pinākabhṛt

"O lord, I had once heard, declared in many ways by the sages, that Rudra, bearer of the Pinaka bow, ever holds the feet of Raghunatha in mind."

Verse 4 (padma.5.44.4)

तत्सर्वं तु मृषा जातं शत्रुघ्नं प्रति युध्यतः । पुष्कलो मे हतः शूरः शत्रुघ्नोऽपि विमूर्च्छितः

tatsarvaṁ tu mṛṣā jātaṁ śatrughnaṁ prati yudhyataḥ puṣkalo me hataḥ śūraḥ śatrughno'pi vimūrcchitaḥ

"All that has proved false, in that you fight against Shatrughna — my own hero Pushkala has been slain, and Rama's younger brother Shatrughna too has been cast into a swoon."

Verse 5 (padma.5.44.5)

तस्मात्त्वां पातयाम्यद्य त्रैलोक्यप्रलयोद्यतम् । यत्नात्तिष्ठस्व भोः शर्व रामभक्तिपराङ्मुखः

tasmāttvāṁ pātayāmyadya trailokyapralayodyatam yatnāttiṣṭhasva bhoḥ śarva rāmabhaktiparāṅmukhaḥ

"Therefore, O Sharva, intent as you are on the dissolution of the three worlds, I shall fell you today; stand firm and be watchful, you who have turned your face from devotion to Rama."

Verse 6 (padma.5.44.6)

शेष उवाच। इत्युक्तवंतं प्लवगं प्रोवाच स महेश्वरः । धन्योऽसि वीरवर्यस्त्वं भवान्वदति नो मृषा

śeṣa uvāca ityuktavaṁtaṁ plavagaṁ provāca sa maheśvaraḥ dhanyo'si vīravaryastvaṁ bhavānvadati no mṛṣā

Shesha said: To the monkey who had spoken thus, Maheshvara replied: "Blessed are you, foremost of heroes; what you say is no falsehood."

Verse 7 (padma.5.44.7)

मत्स्वामी रामचंद्रोऽयं सुरासुरनमस्कृतः । तदश्वमानयामास शत्रुघ्नः परवीरहा

matsvāmī rāmacaṁdro'yaṁ surāsuranamaskṛtaḥ tadaśvamānayāmāsa śatrughnaḥ paravīrahā

"This Ramachandra, worshipped by gods and demons alike, is my very lord; Shatrughna, that slayer of enemy heroes, brought forth this sacrificial horse —"

Verse 8 (padma.5.44.8)

तद्रक्षार्थं समायातस्तद्भक्त्या तु वशीकृतः । यथाकथंचिद्भक्तोऽसौ रक्ष्यः स्वात्मा इति स्थितिः

tadrakṣārthaṁ samāyātastadbhaktyā tu vaśīkṛtaḥ yathākathaṁcidbhakto'sau rakṣyaḥ svātmā iti sthitiḥ

"— and I have come here only for its protection, made subject by devotion to him; somehow this devotee must be shielded — such is my own resolve."

Verse 9 (padma.5.44.9)

रघुनाथः कृपां कृत्वा विलोकय तु निस्त्रपम् । मां स्वभक्त सुदुःखेन किंचित्कोपं दधन्महान्

raghunāthaḥ kṛpāṁ kṛtvā vilokaya tu nistrapam māṁ svabhakta suduḥkhena kiṁcitkopaṁ dadhanmahān

"O Raghunatha, look upon me with grace, without reproach; O great one, I bore some little anger only for my own devotee's grievous suffering."

Verse 10 (padma.5.44.10)

शेष उवाच। एवं वदति चंडीशे हनूमान्कुपितो भृशम् । शिलामादाय महतीं ताडयामास तद्रथम्

śeṣa uvāca evaṁ vadati caṁḍīśe hanūmānkupito bhṛśam śilāmādāya mahatīṁ tāḍayāmāsa tadratham

Shesha said: Though Chandisha spoke thus, Hanuman, still greatly enraged, took up a great boulder and hurled it at his chariot.

Verse 11 (padma.5.44.11)

शिलया ताडितस्तस्य रथः शकलतां गतः । ससूतः सहयः केतुपताकाभिः समन्वितः

śilayā tāḍitastasya rathaḥ śakalatāṁ gataḥ sasūtaḥ sahayaḥ ketupatākābhiḥ samanvitaḥ

Struck by that boulder, his chariot was shattered to fragments, together with its charioteer, its horses, and its banner and pennants.

Verse 12 (padma.5.44.12)

नभःस्था देवताः सर्वाः प्रशशंसुः कपीश्वरम् । धन्योसि प्लवगाधीश महत्कर्म त्वया कृतम्

nabhaḥsthā devatāḥ sarvāḥ praśaśaṁsuḥ kapīśvaram dhanyosi plavagādhīśa mahatkarma tvayā kṛtam

All the gods stationed in the sky praised the lord of monkeys: "Blessed are you, O king of monkeys — a great deed have you wrought!"

Verse 13 (padma.5.44.13)

श्रीशिवं विरथं दृष्ट्वा नंदी तं समुपाद्रवत् । उवाच श्रीमहादेवं मत्पृष्ठं गम्यतामिति

śrīśivaṁ virathaṁ dṛṣṭvā naṁdī taṁ samupādravat uvāca śrīmahādevaṁ matpṛṣṭhaṁ gamyatāmiti

Seeing Shri Shiva without a chariot, Nandin hastened to him and said to great Mahadeva: "Mount now upon my back."

Verse 14 (padma.5.44.14)

वृषस्थितं तु भूतेशं हनूमान्कुपितो भृशम् । शिलामुत्पाट्य तरसा प्राहनद्धृदये तदा

vṛṣasthitaṁ tu bhūteśaṁ hanūmānkupito bhṛśam śilāmutpāṭya tarasā prāhanaddhṛdaye tadā

Seeing the lord of beings now seated upon the bull, Hanuman, greatly enraged, swiftly uprooted a boulder and struck him upon the chest with it.

Verse 15 (padma.5.44.15)

तदाहतो भूतपतिः शूलं तीक्ष्णं समाददे । जाज्वल्यमानं त्रिशिखं वह्निज्वालासमप्रभम्

tadāhato bhūtapatiḥ śūlaṁ tīkṣṇaṁ samādade jājvalyamānaṁ triśikhaṁ vahnijvālāsamaprabham

Struck by that blow, the lord of beings took up a sharp trident, blazing and radiant as a tongue of fire, its three points aflame.

Verse 16 (padma.5.44.16)

आयातं तन्महद्दृष्ट्वा शूलं प्रज्वलनप्रभम् । हस्ते गृहीत्वा तरसा बभंज तिलशः क्षणात्

āyātaṁ tanmahaddṛṣṭvā śūlaṁ prajvalanaprabham haste gṛhītvā tarasā babhaṁja tilaśaḥ kṣaṇāt

Seeing that great blazing trident hurtling toward him, the lord of monkeys swiftly caught it in his own hand and shattered it to bits in an instant.

Verse 17 (padma.5.44.17)

भग्ने त्रिशूले तरसा कपीन्द्रेण क्षणाच्छिवः । शक्तिं करे समाधत्त सर्वलोहविनिर्मिताम्

bhagne triśūle tarasā kapīndreṇa kṣaṇācchivaḥ śaktiṁ kare samādhatta sarvalohavinirmitām

His trident thus instantly broken by the lord of monkeys, Shiva at once took up in his hand a spear wrought entirely of iron.

Verse 18 (padma.5.44.18)

सा शक्तिः शिवनिर्मुक्ता हृदये तस्य धीमतः । लग्ना क्षणादभूत्तत्र विक्लवः प्लवगाधिपः

sā śaktiḥ śivanirmuktā hṛdaye tasya dhīmataḥ lagnā kṣaṇādabhūttatra viklavaḥ plavagādhipaḥ

That spear, loosed by Shiva, lodged in an instant in the heart of that wise one; the lord of monkeys was, for a moment, overcome.

Verse 19 (padma.5.44.19)

क्षणाच्च तद्व्यथां तीर्त्वा गृहीत्वा वृक्षमुल्बणम् । ताडयामास हृदये महाव्यालविभूषिते

kṣaṇācca tadvyathāṁ tīrtvā gṛhītvā vṛkṣamulbaṇam tāḍayāmāsa hṛdaye mahāvyālavibhūṣite

Mastering that pain in an instant, he uprooted a mighty tree and struck the chest of Shiva, adorned as he was with his great serpents.

Verse 20 (padma.5.44.20)

ताडितास्तेन वीरेण फणीन्द्रास्त्रा समागताः । इतस्ततस्ते तं मुक्त्वा गताः पातालमुज्जवाः

tāḍitāstena vīreṇa phaṇīndrāstrā samāgatāḥ itastataste taṁ muktvā gatāḥ pātālamujjavāḥ

Struck by that hero, those splendid serpent-ornaments were shaken loose from their places and fled in every direction, down into the netherworld.

Verse 21 (padma.5.44.21)

शिवस्तस्मिन्नगे मुक्ते वक्षसि स्वे निरीक्ष्य च । कुपितो व्यदधाद्घोरं मुसलं करयुग्मके

śivastasminnage mukte vakṣasi sve nirīkṣya ca kupito vyadadhādghoraṁ musalaṁ karayugmake

Seeing that tree hurled against his own chest, Shiva grew wrathful and raised in both his hands a terrible mace.

Verse 22 (padma.5.44.22)

हतोसि गच्छ संग्रामात्पलाय्य प्लवगाधम । एष ते प्राणहंताहं मुसलेन क्षणादिह

hatosi gaccha saṁgrāmātpalāyya plavagādhama eṣa te prāṇahaṁtāhaṁ musalena kṣaṇādiha

"You are slain! Flee this battle, O basest of monkeys! Here I am, taking your life this very instant with this mace."

Verse 23 (padma.5.44.23)

मुसलं वीक्ष्य निर्मुक्तं शिवेन कुपितेन वै । कीशस्तद्वंचयामास महावेगाद्धरिं स्मरन्

musalaṁ vīkṣya nirmuktaṁ śivena kupitena vai kīśastadvaṁcayāmāsa mahāvegāddhariṁ smaran

Seeing that mace released by the enraged Shiva, the monkey, calling Hari to mind, evaded it with the greatest speed.

Verse 24 (padma.5.44.24)

मुसलं तत्पपाताधः शिवमुक्तं महायसम् । विदार्य पृथिवीं सर्वां जगाम च रसातलम्

musalaṁ tatpapātādhaḥ śivamuktaṁ mahāyasam vidārya pṛthivīṁ sarvāṁ jagāma ca rasātalam

That great iron mace, loosed by Shiva, fell down below, and, cleaving through the whole earth, plunged into the netherworld.

Verse 25 (padma.5.44.25)

तदा प्रकुपितोऽत्यतं हनूमान्रामसेवकः । गृहीत्वा पर्वतं हस्ते ताडयामास वक्षसि

tadā prakupito'tyataṁ hanūmānrāmasevakaḥ gṛhītvā parvataṁ haste tāḍayāmāsa vakṣasi

Then Hanuman, servant of Rama, filled with extreme fury, took up a mountain in his hand and struck him upon the chest.

Verse 26 (padma.5.44.26)

स यावत्पर्वतं छेत्तुं मतिं चक्रे सतीपतिः । तावद्धतः कपींद्रेण शालेन बहुशाखिना

sa yāvatparvataṁ chettuṁ matiṁ cakre satīpatiḥ tāvaddhataḥ kapīṁdreṇa śālena bahuśākhinā

Just as the husband of Sati resolved to cleave that mountain, in that very instant the lord of monkeys struck him with a many-branched Sala tree.

Verse 27 (padma.5.44.27)

तमपिच्छेत्तुमुद्युक्तो यावत्तावच्छिलाहतः । शिलास्ता भेदितुं स्वांतं चकार मृड उद्यतः

tamapicchettumudyukto yāvattāvacchilāhataḥ śilāstā bhedituṁ svāṁtaṁ cakāra mṛḍa udyataḥ

And just as he made ready to cut that too, he was struck by a boulder; stung by that blow, Mrida resolved to shatter those very boulders.

Verse 28 (padma.5.44.28)

तावद्वृष्टिं चकारायं शिलाभिर्नगपर्वतैः । लांगूलेन च संवेष्ट्य ताडयत्येष भूतपम्

tāvadvṛṣṭiṁ cakārāyaṁ śilābhirnagaparvataiḥ lāṁgūlena ca saṁveṣṭya tāḍayatyeṣa bhūtapam

Meanwhile Hanuman rained down boulders and mountain-peaks upon him, and, winding his tail about the lord of beings, struck him again and again.

Verse 29 (padma.5.44.29)

शिलाभिः पर्वतैर्वृक्षैः पुच्छास्फोटेन भूरिशः । नंदी प्राप्तो महात्रासं चंद्रोऽपि शकलीकृतः

śilābhiḥ parvatairvṛkṣaiḥ pucchāsphoṭena bhūriśaḥ naṁdī prāpto mahātrāsaṁ caṁdro'pi śakalīkṛtaḥ

With boulders, mountains, trees, and countless blows of his lashing tail — Nandin was struck with great terror, and even the crescent moon on Shiva's brow was shattered to pieces.

Verse 30 (padma.5.44.30)

अत्यंतं विह्वलो जातो महेशानः प्रकोपनः । क्षणेक्षणे प्रहारेण विह्वलं कुर्वतं भृशम्

atyaṁtaṁ vihvalo jāto maheśānaḥ prakopanaḥ kṣaṇekṣaṇe prahāreṇa vihvalaṁ kurvataṁ bhṛśam

Even wrathful Maheshana grew utterly overwhelmed; struck blow upon blow at every instant, he became more and more helpless —

Verse 31 (padma.5.44.31)

जगाद प्लवगाधीशं धन्योसि रघुपानुग । महत्कर्म कृतं तेऽद्य यत्तेहं सुप्रतोषितः

jagāda plavagādhīśaṁ dhanyosi raghupānuga mahatkarma kṛtaṁ te'dya yattehaṁ supratoṣitaḥ

— and he said to the lord of monkeys: "Blessed are you, follower of Raghupati! A great deed have you wrought today, and I am well pleased by it."

Verse 32 (padma.5.44.32)

न दानेन न यज्ञेन नाल्पेन तपसा ह्यहम् । सुलभोऽस्मि महावेग तस्मात्प्रार्थय मे वरम्

na dānena na yajñena nālpena tapasā hyaham sulabho'smi mahāvega tasmātprārthaya me varam

"Not by gifts, not by sacrifice, not even by great austerity am I so easily won, O one of tremendous speed; therefore ask of me a boon."

Verse 33 (padma.5.44.33)

शेष उवाच। एवं ब्रुवंतं तं दृष्ट्वा हनूमान्निजगाद तम् । प्रहसन्निर्भिया वाण्या महेशानं सुतोषितम्

śeṣa uvāca evaṁ bruvaṁtaṁ taṁ dṛṣṭvā hanūmānnijagāda tam prahasannirbhiyā vāṇyā maheśānaṁ sutoṣitam

Shesha said: Seeing him speak thus, Hanuman replied, laughing, with fearless words, to that greatly pleased Maheshana.

Verse 34 (padma.5.44.34)

हनूमानुवाच। रघुनाथप्रसादेन सर्वं मेऽस्ति महेश्वर । तथापि याचे हि वरं त्वत्तः समरतोषितात्

hanūmānuvāca raghunāthaprasādena sarvaṁ me'sti maheśvara tathāpi yāce hi varaṁ tvattaḥ samaratoṣitāt

Hanuman said: "By the grace of Raghunatha I already possess everything, O Maheshvara; yet still I ask a boon from you, pleased as you are with this battle."

Verse 35 (padma.5.44.35)

एष पुष्कलसंज्ञो नः समरे पतितो हतः । तथैव रामावरजः शत्रुघ्नो मूर्च्छितो रणे

eṣa puṣkalasaṁjño naḥ samare patito hataḥ tathaiva rāmāvarajaḥ śatrughno mūrcchito raṇe

"This hero named Pushkala has fallen slain in our battle; likewise Rama's younger brother Shatrughna lies in a swoon upon the field —"

Verse 36 (padma.5.44.36)

अन्ये च वीरा बहवः पतिताः शरविक्षताः । मूर्च्छिताः पतिताः केचित्तान्रक्षस्व गणैः सह

anye ca vīrā bahavaḥ patitāḥ śaravikṣatāḥ mūrcchitāḥ patitāḥ kecittānrakṣasva gaṇaiḥ saha

"— and many other heroes too have fallen, wounded by arrows; some lie senseless in a swoon — protect them all, together with your ganas,"

Verse 37 (padma.5.44.37)

यथा चैतान्महाभूता वेतालाश्च पिशाचकाः । न हरंति न खादंति श्वशृगालादयस्तथा

yathā caitānmahābhūtā vetālāśca piśācakāḥ na haraṁti na khādaṁti śvaśṛgālādayastathā

"— so that these mighty spirits, vetalas and pishachas, and dogs and jackals and their like, may neither carry them off nor devour them."

Verse 38 (padma.5.44.38)

एतेषां वपुषो भेदो न भवेत्त्वं तथाचर । यावदिंद्रगणं जित्वा न यामि द्रोणपर्वतम्

eteṣāṁ vapuṣo bhedo na bhavettvaṁ tathācara yāvadiṁdragaṇaṁ jitvā na yāmi droṇaparvatam

"Let no harm come to their bodies — grant me this — until I have conquered Indra's host and gone to Mount Drona,"

Verse 39 (padma.5.44.39)

तत्रस्था औषधीर्वापि नीत्वा संस्थापितान्भटान् । जीवयामि बलात्सर्वांस्तावत्त्वं रक्ष सर्वशः

tatrasthā auṣadhīrvāpi nītvā saṁsthāpitānbhaṭān jīvayāmi balātsarvāṁstāvattvaṁ rakṣa sarvaśaḥ

"— and, bringing back the herbs that grow there, restore all these fallen warriors to life by their power. Until then, guard them in every way."

Verse 40 (padma.5.44.40)

एष गच्छामि तं नेतुं द्रोणं पर्वतसत्तमम् । यस्मिन्वसंत्योषधयः प्राणिसंजीवनंकराः

eṣa gacchāmi taṁ netuṁ droṇaṁ parvatasattamam yasminvasaṁtyoṣadhayaḥ prāṇisaṁjīvanaṁkarāḥ

"I go now to bring back that finest of mountains, Drona, upon which grow the very herbs that revive the life of living beings."

Verse 41 (padma.5.44.41)

एतद्वचः समाकर्ण्य तथेति निजगाद तम् । याहि शीघ्रं नगं तं तु रक्षामि त्वद्भटान्मृतान्

etadvacaḥ samākarṇya tatheti nijagāda tam yāhi śīghraṁ nagaṁ taṁ tu rakṣāmi tvadbhaṭānmṛtān

Hearing these words, he said, "So be it. Go swiftly to that mountain; I myself shall guard your fallen warriors."

Verse 42 (padma.5.44.42)

तच्छ्रुत्वा वाक्यमीशस्य जगाम द्रोणपर्वतम् । द्वीपान्सर्वानतिक्रम्य जगाम क्षीरसागरम्

tacchrutvā vākyamīśasya jagāma droṇaparvatam dvīpānsarvānatikramya jagāma kṣīrasāgaram

Hearing the lord's words, he set out for Mount Drona; passing beyond every continent, he came at last to the Ocean of Milk.

Verse 43 (padma.5.44.43)

अत्र तु स्वगणैश्चायं रक्षति स्म शिवो महान् । श्मशानं तद्गणैः स्वीयैर्महाबलपराक्रमैः

atra tu svagaṇaiścāyaṁ rakṣati sma śivo mahān śmaśānaṁ tadgaṇaiḥ svīyairmahābalaparākramaiḥ

There great Shiva, together with his own mighty and valorous ganas, kept guard over that battlefield turned burial-ground.

Verse 44 (padma.5.44.44)

हनूमान्द्रोणमासाद्य द्रोणंनाम महागिरिम् । लांगूले तं निधायाशु प्रतस्थे रणमंडलम्

hanūmāndroṇamāsādya droṇaṁnāma mahāgirim lāṁgūle taṁ nidhāyāśu pratasthe raṇamaṁḍalam

Hanuman, reaching that great mountain named Drona, swiftly set it upon his tail and set out for the battlefield.

Verse 45 (padma.5.44.45)

तं नेतुमुद्यते विप्र चकंपे स च पर्वतः । कंपमानं तु तं दृष्ट्वा तत्पाला देवतागणाः

taṁ netumudyate vipra cakaṁpe sa ca parvataḥ kaṁpamānaṁ tu taṁ dṛṣṭvā tatpālā devatāgaṇāḥ

O brahmin, just as he made ready to carry it off, that mountain trembled; and seeing it tremble, the deities who guarded it —

Verse 46 (padma.5.44.46)

हाहेति कृत्वा प्रोचुस्ते किमिदं भविता गिरौ । को ह्येनं नयते वीरो महाबलपराक्रमः

hāheti kṛtvā procuste kimidaṁ bhavitā girau ko hyenaṁ nayate vīro mahābalaparākramaḥ

— cried out in dismay: "What is now to happen to this mountain? What hero of such mighty strength and valor is carrying it off?"

Verse 47 (padma.5.44.47)

एवं कृत्वा सुराः सर्वे संहता ददृशुः कपिम् । मुंचैनमिति तं प्रोच्य जघ्नुः शस्त्रास्त्रकोटिभिः

evaṁ kṛtvā surāḥ sarve saṁhatā dadṛśuḥ kapim muṁcainamiti taṁ procya jaghnuḥ śastrāstrakoṭibhiḥ

Having said this, all the gods gathered together and confronted the monkey; crying "Release it!" they struck him with millions of weapons and missiles.

Verse 48 (padma.5.44.48)

तान्सर्वान्निघ्नतो दृष्ट्वा हनूमान्कुपितो भृशम् । जघान तान्क्षणाद्वीरः शक्रः सर्वासुरान्यथा

tānsarvānnighnato dṛṣṭvā hanūmānkupito bhṛśam jaghāna tānkṣaṇādvīraḥ śakraḥ sarvāsurānyathā

Seeing all of them attacking him, Hanuman grew greatly enraged, and that hero slew them all in an instant, just as Shakra had once slain all the demons.

Verse 49 (padma.5.44.49)

केचित्पदाहतास्तत्र केचित्करविमर्दिताः । लांगूलेन हताः केचित्केचिच्छृंगेण चाहताः

kecitpadāhatāstatra kecitkaravimarditāḥ lāṁgūlena hatāḥ kecitkecicchṛṁgeṇa cāhatāḥ

Some were struck down there by his feet, some crushed by his hands; some were slain by his lashing tail, and some by a blow from the mountain's own peak.

Verse 50 (padma.5.44.50)

सर्वे ते नाशमापन्नाः क्षणात्कीशेन ताडिताः । केचिन्निपतिता भूमौ रुधिरेण परिप्लुताः

sarve te nāśamāpannāḥ kṣaṇātkīśena tāḍitāḥ kecinnipatitā bhūmau rudhireṇa pariplutāḥ

All of them met destruction, struck down by the monkey in an instant; some fell to the ground, drenched in their own blood.

Verse 51 (padma.5.44.51)

केचित्कीशभयात्त्रस्ता जग्मुः शक्रं सुराधिपम् । क्षतेन च परिप्लुष्टा रुधिरक्षतदेहिनः

kecitkīśabhayāttrastā jagmuḥ śakraṁ surādhipam kṣatena ca paripluṣṭā rudhirakṣatadehinaḥ

Some, terrified by fear of the monkey, fled to Shakra, lord of the gods, their bodies wounded and drenched in blood —

Verse 52 (padma.5.44.52)

तान्दृष्ट्वा भयसंविग्नान्रुधिरेण परिप्लुतान् । सुराञ्जगाद विमनाः शक्रः सर्वसुरोत्तमः

tāndṛṣṭvā bhayasaṁvignānrudhireṇa pariplutān surāñjagāda vimanāḥ śakraḥ sarvasurottamaḥ

Seeing them thus stricken with fear and drenched in blood, Shakra, foremost of all the gods, troubled at heart, said to them —

Verse 53 (padma.5.44.53)

कथं यूयं भयत्रस्ताः कथं रुधिरविप्लुताः । केन दैत्येन निहता राक्षसेनाधमेन वा

kathaṁ yūyaṁ bhayatrastāḥ kathaṁ rudhiraviplutāḥ kena daityena nihatā rākṣasenādhamena vā

"Why are you thus terrified with fear? Why drenched in blood? By what demon, or by what base rakshasa, have you been struck down?"

Verse 54 (padma.5.44.54)

सर्वं शंसत मे तथ्यं यथा ज्ञात्वा व्रजामि तम् । निहत्य बद्ध्वा चायामि युष्मद्घातकमुन्मदम्

sarvaṁ śaṁsata me tathyaṁ yathā jñātvā vrajāmi tam nihatya baddhvā cāyāmi yuṣmadghātakamunmadam

"Tell me everything truthfully, that knowing it I may go to him — and, having slain and bound that arrogant destroyer of yours, return."

Verse 55 (padma.5.44.55)

इति वाक्यं समाकर्ण्य तुरासाहं सुरोत्तमाः । जगदुर्दीनया वाचा सुरासुरनमस्कृतम्

iti vākyaṁ samākarṇya turāsāhaṁ surottamāḥ jagadurdīnayā vācā surāsuranamaskṛtam

Hearing these words, those foremost gods spoke with pitiful voices to Turasah, lord of the gods, worshipped by gods and demons alike.

Verse 56 (padma.5.44.56)

देवा ऊचुः। इहागत्य न जानीमः कश्चिद्वानररूपधृक् । नेतुं द्रोणं समुद्युक्तो लांगूले वेष्ट्य तं गिरिम्

devā ūcuḥ ihāgatya na jānīmaḥ kaścidvānararūpadhṛk netuṁ droṇaṁ samudyukto lāṁgūle veṣṭya taṁ girim

The gods said: "Someone in the form of a monkey — we do not know who — came here and, winding his tail about Mount Drona, made ready to carry it off."

Verse 57 (padma.5.44.57)

गंतुं कृतमतिस्तावद्वयं सर्वे सुसंहताः । युद्धं चक्रुः सुसंनद्धाः सर्वशस्त्रास्त्रवर्षिणः

gaṁtuṁ kṛtamatistāvadvayaṁ sarve susaṁhatāḥ yuddhaṁ cakruḥ susaṁnaddhāḥ sarvaśastrāstravarṣiṇaḥ

"Resolved to stop him, all of us gathered together, well-armed and equipped, and fought him, raining down every weapon and missile."

Verse 58 (padma.5.44.58)

तेन सर्वे वयं युद्धे निर्जिता बलशालिना । अनेके निहतास्तत्र भूमौ पेतुः सुरोत्तमाः

tena sarve vayaṁ yuddhe nirjitā balaśālinā aneke nihatāstatra bhūmau petuḥ surottamāḥ

"By that mighty one we were all defeated in that battle; many of us, the foremost of gods, fell slain there upon the ground."

Verse 59 (padma.5.44.59)

वयं तु बहुभिः पुण्यैर्जीविता इह चागताः । शोणितेन सुसिक्तांगाः क्षतपीडासमन्विताः

vayaṁ tu bahubhiḥ puṇyairjīvitā iha cāgatāḥ śoṇitena susiktāṁgāḥ kṣatapīḍāsamanvitāḥ

"Only by the merit of many good deeds have we come here alive at all; our bodies are drenched in blood and racked with the pain of our wounds."

Verse 60 (padma.5.44.60)

एतद्वाक्यं समाकर्ण्य सुराणां स पुरंदरः । आदिदेश सुरान्सर्वान्महाबलसमन्वितान्

etadvākyaṁ samākarṇya surāṇāṁ sa puraṁdaraḥ ādideśa surānsarvānmahābalasamanvitān

Hearing these words of the gods, Purandara commanded all the gods, endowed as they were with great strength —

Verse 61 (padma.5.44.61)

यात महाद्रोणगिरिं कपिं बद्धुं महाबलम् । बद्ध्वा नयत यूयं वै सुराणां रणपातकम्

yāta mahādroṇagiriṁ kapiṁ baddhuṁ mahābalam baddhvā nayata yūyaṁ vai surāṇāṁ raṇapātakam

"Go to great Mount Drona and bind that mighty monkey; having bound him, bring him here, this destroyer of the gods."

Verse 62 (padma.5.44.62)

इत्याज्ञप्ता ययुस्ते वै द्रोणं पर्वतसत्तमम् । यत्रास्ते बलवान्वीरो हनूमान्कपिसत्तमः

ityājñaptā yayuste vai droṇaṁ parvatasattamam yatrāste balavānvīro hanūmānkapisattamaḥ

Thus commanded, they went to that finest of mountains named Drona, where mighty Hanuman, best of monkeys, stood.

Verse 63 (padma.5.44.63)

गत्वा ते प्राहरन्सर्वे हनूमंतं महाबलम् । हनूमता ते निहता मुष्टिभिः करताडनैः

gatvā te prāharansarve hanūmaṁtaṁ mahābalam hanūmatā te nihatā muṣṭibhiḥ karatāḍanaiḥ

Going there, all of them attacked mighty Hanuman; Hanuman struck them down with blows of his fists and the flats of his hands.

Verse 64 (padma.5.44.64)

पतितास्ते क्षणात्तत्र रुधिरक्षतविग्रहाः । अन्ये पलायनपरा जग्मुस्ते त्रिदिवेश्वरम्

patitāste kṣaṇāttatra rudhirakṣatavigrahāḥ anye palāyanaparā jagmuste tridiveśvaram

They fell there in an instant, their bodies wounded and covered in blood; others turned and fled to the lord of the third heaven.

Verse 65 (padma.5.44.65)

तच्छ्रुत्वा कुपितः शक्रः सर्वानमरसत्तमान् । आदिदेश महावीरं वानरेंद्रं सुरोत्तमः

tacchrutvā kupitaḥ śakraḥ sarvānamarasattamān ādideśa mahāvīraṁ vānareṁdraṁ surottamaḥ

Hearing this, enraged Shakra, foremost of the gods, gave his command to all the very best of the immortals, the great heroes among them.

Verse 66 (padma.5.44.66)

तदाज्ञप्ता ययुस्ते वै यत्र कीशेश्वरो बली । तान्सर्वानागतान्दृष्ट्वा जगाद कपिसत्तमः

tadājñaptā yayuste vai yatra kīśeśvaro balī tānsarvānāgatāndṛṣṭvā jagāda kapisattamaḥ

Thus commanded, they went to where the powerful lord of monkeys stood; and seeing them all arriving, the best of monkeys said —

Verse 67 (padma.5.44.67)

मायां तु वीराः समरे संहर्तारं हि मां बलात् । नेष्यामि युष्मानधुना संयमिन्याः पुरोंऽतिके

māyāṁ tu vīrāḥ samare saṁhartāraṁ hi māṁ balāt neṣyāmi yuṣmānadhunā saṁyaminyāḥ puroṁ'tike

"O heroes, do not force me to become your destroyer in this battle; else I shall send every one of you now to the very gates of Yama's city."

Verse 68 (padma.5.44.68)

इत्युक्ता अपि ते सर्वे सन्नद्धाः प्राहरन्कपिम् । शस्त्रास्त्रैर्बहुधा मुक्तैर्महाबलसमन्विताः

ityuktā api te sarve sannaddhāḥ prāharankapim śastrāstrairbahudhā muktairmahābalasamanvitāḥ

Though thus addressed, all of them, mighty and well-armed, attacked the monkey still, loosing many weapons and missiles.

Verse 69 (padma.5.44.69)

केचिच्छूलैः परशुभिः केचित्खड्गैश्च पट्टिशैः । मुसलैः शक्तिभिः केचित्क्रोधेन कलुषीकृताः

kecicchūlaiḥ paraśubhiḥ kecitkhaḍgaiśca paṭṭiśaiḥ musalaiḥ śaktibhiḥ kecitkrodhena kaluṣīkṛtāḥ

Some struck with tridents, some with axes; some with swords and spears; some with maces and javelins, their minds darkened with rage.

Verse 70 (padma.5.44.70)

स आहतोऽमरवरैर्विविधैरायुधैर्बली । शिलाभिस्ताञ्जघानाशु सर्वानमरसत्तमान्

sa āhato'maravarairvividhairāyudhairbalī śilābhistāñjaghānāśu sarvānamarasattamān

Struck by the finest of the immortals with their various weapons, that mighty one swiftly struck down all those foremost gods with boulders.

Verse 71 (padma.5.44.71)

केचित्पलाय्य आहुस्ते गताः शक्रसमीपकम् । तदुक्तं वाक्यमाकर्ण्य भयं प्राप सुराधिपः

kecitpalāyya āhuste gatāḥ śakrasamīpakam taduktaṁ vākyamākarṇya bhayaṁ prāpa surādhipaḥ

Some, fleeing, went and told this to Shakra; hearing what they said, the lord of the gods was overcome with fear.

Verse 72 (padma.5.44.72)

बृहस्पतिं सुराध्यक्षं मंत्रिणं स्वर्गवासिनाम् । पप्रच्छ सविधे गत्वा नत्वा सुरगुरुं वरम्

bṛhaspatiṁ surādhyakṣaṁ maṁtriṇaṁ svargavāsinām papraccha savidhe gatvā natvā suraguruṁ varam

He went to Brihaspati, counsellor and chief of the heaven-dwellers, and, bowing to that best of the gods' preceptors, questioned him.

Verse 73 (padma.5.44.73)

इंद्र उवाच। कोऽसौ यो वानरो द्रोणं नेतुं स्वामिन्समागतः । येन मे निहता वीरा अमराः शस्त्रधारिणः

iṁdra uvāca ko'sau yo vānaro droṇaṁ netuṁ svāminsamāgataḥ yena me nihatā vīrā amarāḥ śastradhāriṇaḥ

Indra said: "Who is this monkey, my lord, who has come to carry off Mount Drona, and by whom my heroic, weapon-bearing immortals have been slain?"

Verse 74 (padma.5.44.74)

शेष उवाच। एतच्छ्रुत्वा तु तद्वाक्यमुक्तमांगिरसो महान् । जगाद भयसंविग्नं तुरासाहं सुराधिपम्

śeṣa uvāca etacchrutvā tu tadvākyamuktamāṁgiraso mahān jagāda bhayasaṁvignaṁ turāsāhaṁ surādhipam

Shesha said: Hearing these words, the great son of Angiras spoke to Turasah, lord of the gods, who was overcome with fear.

Verse 75 (padma.5.44.75)

बृहस्पतिरुवाच। यो रावणमहन्संख्ये कुंभकर्णमदीदहत् । येन ते वैरिणः सर्वे हतास्तस्यैव सेवकः

bṛhaspatiruvāca yo rāvaṇamahansaṁkhye kuṁbhakarṇamadīdahat yena te vairiṇaḥ sarve hatāstasyaiva sevakaḥ

Brihaspati said: "He who slew Ravana in battle, who set Kumbhakarna ablaze, by whom all your enemies were destroyed — this is that very lord's own servant."

Verse 76 (padma.5.44.76)

येन लंका सत्रिकूटा निर्दग्धा पुच्छवह्निना । अक्षश्च निहतो येन हनूमंतमवेहि तम्

yena laṁkā satrikūṭā nirdagdhā pucchavahninā akṣaśca nihato yena hanūmaṁtamavehi tam

"He who burned Lanka, with its three peaks, in the fire of his own tail, and who slew Akshakumara — know him to be Hanuman."

Verse 77 (padma.5.44.77)

तेन सर्वे विनिहता द्रोणार्थमयमुद्यतः । हयमेधं महाराजः करोति बलिसत्तमः

tena sarve vinihatā droṇārthamayamudyataḥ hayamedhaṁ mahārājaḥ karoti balisattamaḥ

"By him were all these slain, as he now strives for the sake of Mount Drona; for that great king, foremost of the generous, is performing a horse-sacrifice —"

Verse 78 (padma.5.44.78)

तस्याश्वं शिवभक्तस्तु नृपो वीरमणिर्महान् । जहार तत्र समभूद्रणं सुरविमोहनम्

tasyāśvaṁ śivabhaktastu nṛpo vīramaṇirmahān jahāra tatra samabhūdraṇaṁ suravimohanam

"— whose sacrificial horse the great king Viramani, a devotee of Shiva, carried off; and there followed a battle that bewildered even the gods."

Verse 79 (padma.5.44.79)

शिवेन निहताः संख्ये वीरा रामस्य भूरिशः । तान्वै जीवयितुं द्रोणं नेष्यत्येव महाबलः

śivena nihatāḥ saṁkhye vīrā rāmasya bhūriśaḥ tānvai jīvayituṁ droṇaṁ neṣyatyeva mahābalaḥ

"In that battle many of Rama's heroes were slain by Shiva himself; and to revive them, this mighty one will surely carry off Mount Drona."

Verse 80 (padma.5.44.80)

नायं वर्षशतैर्जेयो भवता बलसंयुतः । तस्मात्प्रसादय कपिं देहि तत्रत्यमौषधम्

nāyaṁ varṣaśatairjeyo bhavatā balasaṁyutaḥ tasmātprasādaya kapiṁ dehi tatratyamauṣadham

"He cannot be conquered even in a hundred years, however great your strength may be. Therefore appease that monkey, and give him the herbs that grow there."
