The Meeting with Shri Rama

Verse 1 (padma.5.45.1)

शेष उवाच गुरुभाषितमाकर्ण्य वृषपर्वरिपुः स्वराट् । ज्ञात्वा रामस्य कार्यार्थमागतं पवनात्मजम्

śeṣa uvāca gurubhāṣitamākarṇya vṛṣaparvaripuḥ svarāṭ jñātvā rāmasya kāryārthamāgataṁ pavanātmajam

Shesha said: Hearing his guru's words, the sovereign foe of Vrishaparva, knowing that the son of the wind had come only for Rama's own purpose —

Verse 2 (padma.5.45.2)

भयं तत्याज मनसि वानरात्समुपस्थितम् । जहर्ष चित्ते च भृशं वाचस्पतिमुवाच ह

bhayaṁ tatyāja manasi vānarātsamupasthitam jaharṣa citte ca bhṛśaṁ vācaspatimuvāca ha

— cast from his mind the fear that the monkey had raised there; he rejoiced greatly at heart, and spoke to Vachaspati —

Verse 3 (padma.5.45.3)

इंद्र उवाच कथं कार्यं सुराधीश द्रोणोऽयं नीयते यदि । देवानां जीवनं भूयः कथं स्यादिति मे वद

iṁdra uvāca kathaṁ kāryaṁ surādhīśa droṇo'yaṁ nīyate yadi devānāṁ jīvanaṁ bhūyaḥ kathaṁ syāditi me vada

Indra said: "O lord of the gods, how shall it be, if this Drona is carried off? Tell me — how then shall the gods find their life-restoring remedy again?"

Verse 4 (padma.5.45.4)

इदानीं पवनोद्भूतं प्रसादय यथातथम् । रामः प्रीतिं परां याति देवानां च सुखं भवेत्

idānīṁ pavanodbhūtaṁ prasādaya yathātatham rāmaḥ prītiṁ parāṁ yāti devānāṁ ca sukhaṁ bhavet

"Go now and appease the son of the wind in whatever way is fitting; by this Rama shall know supreme delight, and the gods too shall find ease."

Verse 5 (padma.5.45.5)

देवाधिपस्य वचनं श्रुत्वा वाचस्पतिस्तदा । शक्रं तु पुरतः कृत्वा सर्वदेवैः परीवृतम्

devādhipasya vacanaṁ śrutvā vācaspatistadā śakraṁ tu purataḥ kṛtvā sarvadevaiḥ parīvṛtam

Hearing these words of the lord of the gods, Vachaspati then, placing Shakra before him and surrounded by all the gods —

Verse 6 (padma.5.45.6)

जगाम तत्र यत्रास्ते हनूमान्निर्भयः कपिः । गर्जति प्रसभं जित्वा सुरान्सर्वान्सुखासिनः

jagāma tatra yatrāste hanūmānnirbhayaḥ kapiḥ garjati prasabhaṁ jitvā surānsarvānsukhāsinaḥ

— went to where fearless Hanuman, the monkey, stood, roaring mightily, having conquered all the gods with ease.

Verse 7 (padma.5.45.7)

ते गत्वा सन्निधौ तस्य बृहस्पतिपुरोगमाः । पेतुस्ते चरणौ नत्वा समीरतनुजस्य हि

te gatvā sannidhau tasya bṛhaspatipurogamāḥ petuste caraṇau natvā samīratanujasya hi

Going into his presence, led by Brihaspati, they fell down and bowed at the feet of the son of the wind.

Verse 8 (padma.5.45.8)

बृहस्पतिश्च तं वीरं जगाद प्रेरितोऽमुना । सुराधीशेन लोकस्य गुरुणा वदतां वरः

bṛhaspatiśca taṁ vīraṁ jagāda prerito'munā surādhīśena lokasya guruṇā vadatāṁ varaḥ

And Brihaspati, preceptor of the world and foremost of speakers, prompted by the lord of the gods, said to that hero —

Verse 9 (padma.5.45.9)

अजानद्भिः कृतं कर्म देवैस्तव पराक्रमम् । श्रीरामचरणस्य त्वं सेवकोऽसि महामते

ajānadbhiḥ kṛtaṁ karma devaistava parākramam śrīrāmacaraṇasya tvaṁ sevako'si mahāmate

"This deed was done by the gods in ignorance of your valor; you, O great-minded one, are a servant of Shri Rama's own feet."

Verse 10 (padma.5.45.10)

किमर्थमयमारंभः कथमत्र समागमः । तत्करिष्यामहे सर्वे सन्नतास्तव भाषितम्

kimarthamayamāraṁbhaḥ kathamatra samāgamaḥ tatkariṣyāmahe sarve sannatāstava bhāṣitam

"For what purpose is this undertaking, and how has this clash come about here? We shall all do whatever you say, bowed as we are before you."

Verse 11 (padma.5.45.11)

रोषं त्यक्त्वा कृपां कृत्वा देवाधीशं विलोकय । पवनात्मज दैत्यानां भयंकरवपुर्दधत्

roṣaṁ tyaktvā kṛpāṁ kṛtvā devādhīśaṁ vilokaya pavanātmaja daityānāṁ bhayaṁkaravapurdadhat

"Cast off your wrath, show mercy, and look kindly upon the lord of the gods, O son of the wind, you who bear a form so fearsome to demons."

Verse 12 (padma.5.45.12)

शेष उवाच इत्थं भाषितमाकर्ण्य देवानां स गुरोर्वचः । उवाच देवान्सकलान्गुरुं चैव महयशाः

śeṣa uvāca itthaṁ bhāṣitamākarṇya devānāṁ sa gurorvacaḥ uvāca devānsakalānguruṁ caiva mahayaśāḥ

Shesha said: Hearing these words thus spoken by the gods' preceptor, that hero of great renown said to all the gods and to the guru himself —

Verse 13 (padma.5.45.13)

राज्ञो वीरमणेः संख्ये हताः शर्वेण भूरिशः । भटास्तान्वै जीवयितुं द्रोणं नेष्यामि पर्वतम्

rājño vīramaṇeḥ saṁkhye hatāḥ śarveṇa bhūriśaḥ bhaṭāstānvai jīvayituṁ droṇaṁ neṣyāmi parvatam

"Many of King Viramani's warriors have been slain in battle by Sharva; to revive them I shall carry off Mount Drona."

Verse 14 (padma.5.45.14)

तं ये निवारयिष्यंति स्ववीर्यबलदर्पिताः । तान्नेष्यामि क्षणादेव यमस्य सदनं प्रति

taṁ ye nivārayiṣyaṁti svavīryabaladarpitāḥ tānneṣyāmi kṣaṇādeva yamasya sadanaṁ prati

"Whoever, proud of his own strength and valor, tries to stop me, I shall send that instant to the abode of Yama."

Verse 15 (padma.5.45.15)

तस्माद्वदत मे यूयं द्रोणं वाथ तदौषधम् । येन संजीवयिष्यामि मृतान्वीरान्रणांगणे

tasmādvadata me yūyaṁ droṇaṁ vātha tadauṣadham yena saṁjīvayiṣyāmi mṛtānvīrānraṇāṁgaṇe

"Therefore tell me: will you give me Drona itself, or else that herb, by which I may revive the heroes lying dead upon the battlefield?"

Verse 16 (padma.5.45.16)

शेष उवाच इति वाक्यं समाकर्ण्य वायुसूनोर्महात्मनः । ते सर्वे प्रणतिं गत्वा ददुः संजीवनौषधम्

śeṣa uvāca iti vākyaṁ samākarṇya vāyusūnormahātmanaḥ te sarve praṇatiṁ gatvā daduḥ saṁjīvanauṣadham

Shesha said: Hearing these words of the great-souled son of Vayu, all of them, bowing before him, gave him the life-restoring herb.

Verse 17 (padma.5.45.17)

ते प्रहृष्टा भयं त्यक्त्वा सुराः स्वर्गौकसः स्वयम् । ययुः सुरपतिं कृत्वा पुरः सौख्य समन्विताः

te prahṛṣṭā bhayaṁ tyaktvā surāḥ svargaukasaḥ svayam yayuḥ surapatiṁ kṛtvā puraḥ saukhya samanvitāḥ

Delighted, casting off their fear, the gods, dwellers of heaven, went off themselves, placing their king before them, filled now with ease.

Verse 18 (padma.5.45.18)

हनुमान्भेषजं तत्तु समादायागतो रणम् । स्तुतः सर्वैः सुरगणैर्महाकर्मसमुत्सुकैः

hanumānbheṣajaṁ tattu samādāyāgato raṇam stutaḥ sarvaiḥ suragaṇairmahākarmasamutsukaiḥ

Hanuman, taking that medicine, returned to the battlefield, praised by all the hosts of gods eager to see his great deed done.

Verse 19 (padma.5.45.19)

तमागतं हनूमंतं वीक्ष्य सर्वेऽपि वैरिणः । साधुसाधुप्रशंसंतमद्भुतं मेनिरे कपिम्

tamāgataṁ hanūmaṁtaṁ vīkṣya sarve'pi vairiṇaḥ sādhusādhupraśaṁsaṁtamadbhutaṁ menire kapim

Seeing Hanuman thus returned, even his enemies deemed that wondrous monkey worthy of praise, crying, "Well done, well done!"

Verse 20 (padma.5.45.20)

कपिः समागत्य महामुदायुतः । पुरो भटं पुष्कलमागतं मृतम् । शिवेन संरक्षितमुग्रमंडले । श्रीरामचित्तं सविधे जगाम ह

kapiḥ samāgatya mahāmudāyutaḥ puro bhaṭaṁ puṣkalamāgataṁ mṛtam śivena saṁrakṣitamugramaṁḍale śrīrāmacittaṁ savidhe jagāma ha

The monkey, filled with great joy, came to where the fallen warrior Pushkala lay dead upon that terrible field, kept safe there by Shiva; and, Shri Rama held fast in his heart, he drew near.

Verse 21 (padma.5.45.21)

सुमतिं च समाहूय मंत्रिणं महतां मतम् । उवाच जीवयाम्यद्य सर्वान्वीरान्रणे मृतान्

sumatiṁ ca samāhūya maṁtriṇaṁ mahatāṁ matam uvāca jīvayāmyadya sarvānvīrānraṇe mṛtān

Calling for Sumati, the counsellor esteemed by the great, he said: "Today I shall revive all the heroes fallen in this battle."

Verse 22 (padma.5.45.22)

एवमुक्त्वा भेषजं तत्पुष्कलस्य महोरसि । शिरः कायेन संधाय जगाद वचनं शुभम्

evamuktvā bheṣajaṁ tatpuṣkalasya mahorasi śiraḥ kāyena saṁdhāya jagāda vacanaṁ śubham

Having said this, he placed the medicine upon Pushkala's great chest, joined his head back to his body, and spoke these auspicious words —

Verse 23 (padma.5.45.23)

यद्यहं मनसा वाचा कर्मणा राघवं पतिम् । जानामि तर्हि एतेन भेषजेनाशु जीवतु

yadyahaṁ manasā vācā karmaṇā rāghavaṁ patim jānāmi tarhi etena bheṣajenāśu jīvatu

"If I, in mind, speech, and deed, know Raghava alone as my lord — then by this medicine let him live again, swiftly."

Verse 24 (padma.5.45.24)

इति वाक्यं यदा वक्ति तावत्पुष्कल उत्थितः । रणांगणेऽदशद्रोषाद्दंतान्वीरशिरोमणिः

iti vākyaṁ yadā vakti tāvatpuṣkala utthitaḥ raṇāṁgaṇe'daśadroṣāddaṁtānvīraśiromaṇiḥ

Even as he spoke these words, Pushkala rose up; there upon the battlefield, that crest-jewel of heroes gnashed his teeth in fury.

Verse 25 (padma.5.45.25)

क्व गतो वीरभद्रोऽसौ मां संमूर्च्छ्य रणांगणे । सद्योऽहं पातयाम्येनं क्वास्ति मे धनुरुत्तमम्

kva gato vīrabhadro'sau māṁ saṁmūrcchya raṇāṁgaṇe sadyo'haṁ pātayāmyenaṁ kvāsti me dhanuruttamam

"Where has that Virabhadra gone, who cast me into a swoon upon this field? I shall fell him this instant — where is my finest bow?"

Verse 26 (padma.5.45.26)

इति तं भाषमाणं वै प्राह वीरं कपींद्रकः । धन्योऽसि वीर यद्भूयो वदस्येनं रणांगणे

iti taṁ bhāṣamāṇaṁ vai prāha vīraṁ kapīṁdrakaḥ dhanyo'si vīra yadbhūyo vadasyenaṁ raṇāṁgaṇe

To him speaking thus, the lord of monkeys said: "Blessed are you, O hero, that you speak of him again upon this field."

Verse 27 (padma.5.45.27)

त्वं हतो वीरभद्रेण रघुनाथप्रसादतः । पुनः संजीवितोऽस्येहि शत्रुघ्नं याम मूर्च्छितम्

tvaṁ hato vīrabhadreṇa raghunāthaprasādataḥ punaḥ saṁjīvito'syehi śatrughnaṁ yāma mūrcchitam

"You were slain by Virabhadra, and by Raghunatha's grace you have been revived once more. Come now, let us go to Shatrughna, who lies still in a swoon."

Verse 28 (padma.5.45.28)

इत्युक्त्वा प्रययौ तत्र संग्रामवरमूर्धनि । श्वसन्नास्ते स शत्रुघ्नः शिवबाणप्रपीडितः

ityuktvā prayayau tatra saṁgrāmavaramūrdhani śvasannāste sa śatrughnaḥ śivabāṇaprapīḍitaḥ

Having said this, he went to the very forefront of that great battle, where Shatrughna lay breathing still, afflicted by Shiva's arrow.

Verse 29 (padma.5.45.29)

तत्र गत्वा समीपं तच्छत्रुघ्नस्य महात्मनः । निधाय भेषजं तस्य वक्षसि श्वासमागते

tatra gatvā samīpaṁ tacchatrughnasya mahātmanaḥ nidhāya bheṣajaṁ tasya vakṣasi śvāsamāgate

Going there, near to that great-souled Shatrughna, in whose chest breath still remained, he placed the medicine upon him —

Verse 30 (padma.5.45.30)

उवाच हनुमांस्तं वै जीव शत्रुघ्नसत्तम । मूर्च्छितोऽसि रणे कस्मान्महाबलपराक्रम

uvāca hanumāṁstaṁ vai jīva śatrughnasattama mūrcchito'si raṇe kasmānmahābalaparākrama

— and Hanuman said to him: "Live, O foremost of the Shatrughnas! O mighty and valorous one, why have you swooned here in battle?"

Verse 31 (padma.5.45.31)

यद्यहं ब्रह्मचर्यं च जन्मपर्यंतमुद्यतः । पालयामि तदा वीरः शत्रुघ्नो जीवतु क्षणात्

yadyahaṁ brahmacaryaṁ ca janmaparyaṁtamudyataḥ pālayāmi tadā vīraḥ śatrughno jīvatu kṣaṇāt

"If I have kept my vow of celibacy resolutely from birth until this very day, then let the hero Shatrughna live again this instant."

Verse 32 (padma.5.45.32)

उक्तमात्रेण तेनेदं जीवितः क्षणमात्रतः । क्व शिवः क्व शिवो यातो विहायरणमंडलम्

uktamātreṇa tenedaṁ jīvitaḥ kṣaṇamātrataḥ kva śivaḥ kva śivo yāto vihāyaraṇamaṁḍalam

No sooner had he spoken than Shatrughna was revived that very instant: "Where is Shiva? Where has Shiva gone, leaving this battlefield?"

Verse 33 (padma.5.45.33)

अनेके निहताः संख्ये श्रीरुद्रेण पिनाकिना । ते सर्वे जीविता वीराः कपीन्द्रेण महात्मना

aneke nihatāḥ saṁkhye śrīrudreṇa pinākinā te sarve jīvitā vīrāḥ kapīndreṇa mahātmanā

Many heroes, slain in that battle by Shri Rudra, bearer of the Pinaka, were thus revived, every one, by the great-souled lord of monkeys.

Verse 34 (padma.5.45.34)

तदा सर्वे सुसन्नद्धा रोषपूरितमानसाः । स्वेस्वे रथे स्थिताः शत्रून्प्रययुः क्षतविग्रहाः

tadā sarve susannaddhā roṣapūritamānasāḥ svesve rathe sthitāḥ śatrūnprayayuḥ kṣatavigrahāḥ

Then, fully armed, their hearts filled with fury, all of them mounted each his own chariot and advanced against their foes, their bodies still bearing every wound.

Verse 35 (padma.5.45.35)

पुष्कलो वीरभद्रं तु चंडं चैव कुशध्वजः । नंदिनं हनुमान्वीरः शत्रुघ्नः संगरे शिवम्

puṣkalo vīrabhadraṁ tu caṁḍaṁ caiva kuśadhvajaḥ naṁdinaṁ hanumānvīraḥ śatrughnaḥ saṁgare śivam

Pushkala advanced against Virabhadra, Kushadhvaja against Chanda, the hero Hanuman against Nandin, and Shatrughna, in that battle, against Shiva himself.

Verse 36 (padma.5.45.36)

धनुर्विस्फारयंतं तं शत्रुघ्नं बलिनां वरम् । संग्रामे शिवमाहूय तिष्ठंतं प्रययौ नृपः

dhanurvisphārayaṁtaṁ taṁ śatrughnaṁ balināṁ varam saṁgrāme śivamāhūya tiṣṭhaṁtaṁ prayayau nṛpaḥ

Shatrughna, foremost of the mighty, drawing his bow, challenged Shiva to battle; and as Shiva stood there, King Viramani advanced to face him.

Verse 37 (padma.5.45.37)

राजा वीरमणिर्वीरः शत्रुघ्नः समरे बली । अन्योन्यं चक्रतुर्युद्धं मुनिविस्मयकारकम्

rājā vīramaṇirvīraḥ śatrughnaḥ samare balī anyonyaṁ cakraturyuddhaṁ munivismayakārakam

The heroic King Viramani and mighty Shatrughna waged upon each other a battle that astonished even the sages.

Verse 38 (padma.5.45.38)

राज्ञा च वीरमणिना रथा भग्नाः शताधिकाः । शत्रुघ्नस्य नरेंद्रस्य तिलशः क्षणतो द्विज

rājñā ca vīramaṇinā rathā bhagnāḥ śatādhikāḥ śatrughnasya nareṁdrasya tilaśaḥ kṣaṇato dvija

O brahmin, King Viramani shattered more than a hundred of King Shatrughna's chariots to pieces in a single instant.

Verse 39 (padma.5.45.39)

तदा प्रकुपितोऽत्यंतं शत्रुघ्नो रणमंडले । आग्नेयास्त्रं मुमोचामुं दग्धुं सैन्यसमन्वितम्

tadā prakupito'tyaṁtaṁ śatrughno raṇamaṁḍale āgneyāstraṁ mumocāmuṁ dagdhuṁ sainyasamanvitam

Then, greatly enraged upon that battlefield, Shatrughna loosed the fire-missile to burn him down together with his army.

Verse 40 (padma.5.45.40)

दाहकं तन्महद्दृष्ट्वा महास्त्रं शत्रुमोचितम् । अत्यंतं कुपितो राजा वारुणास्त्रं समाददे

dāhakaṁ tanmahaddṛṣṭvā mahāstraṁ śatrumocitam atyaṁtaṁ kupito rājā vāruṇāstraṁ samādade

Seeing that great burning missile loosed by his foe, the king, greatly enraged, took up the Varuna missile in answer.

Verse 41 (padma.5.45.41)

वारुणास्त्रेण शीतार्तं वीक्ष्य रामानुजो बली । वायव्यास्त्रं मुमोचास्मै तेन वायुर्महानभूत्

vāruṇāstreṇa śītārtaṁ vīkṣya rāmānujo balī vāyavyāstraṁ mumocāsmai tena vāyurmahānabhūt

Seeing mighty Shatrughna afflicted by the cold of the Varuna missile, he loosed the wind-missile against him, and a great gale rose up.

Verse 42 (padma.5.45.42)

वायुना संहता मेघा ययुस्ते सर्वतोदिशम् । इतस्ततो गताः सर्वे सैन्यं तत्सुखितं बभौ

vāyunā saṁhatā meghā yayuste sarvatodiśam itastato gatāḥ sarve sainyaṁ tatsukhitaṁ babhau

Driven by that wind, the clouds scattered in every direction; dispersed on every side, the army stood at ease once more.

Verse 43 (padma.5.45.43)

सैन्ये पवनपीडार्ते नृपो वीरमतिर्महान् । पर्वतास्त्रं रिपूद्धारि जग्राह च शरासने

sainye pavanapīḍārte nṛpo vīramatirmahān parvatāstraṁ ripūddhāri jagrāha ca śarāsane

Seeing his own army afflicted by that gale, the great and resolute king fitted to his bow the mountain-missile, that remover of foes.

Verse 44 (padma.5.45.44)

पर्वतैः स्तंभितो वायुर्न चासर्पत संगरे । तद्वीक्ष्य रामावरजो वज्रास्त्रं तु समाददे

parvataiḥ staṁbhito vāyurna cāsarpata saṁgare tadvīkṣya rāmāvarajo vajrāstraṁ tu samādade

Checked by those mountains, the wind could advance no further in that battle; seeing this, Rama's younger brother took up the thunderbolt-missile.

Verse 45 (padma.5.45.45)

वज्रास्त्रेण हताः सर्वे नगास्तु तिलशः कृताः । चूर्णतां प्रापुरेतस्मिन्रणे वीरवरार्चिते

vajrāstreṇa hatāḥ sarve nagāstu tilaśaḥ kṛtāḥ cūrṇatāṁ prāpuretasminraṇe vīravarārcite

By the thunderbolt-missile all those mountains were shattered to bits and pulverized, in that battle honored by the finest of heroes.

Verse 46 (padma.5.45.46)

वज्रास्त्रेण विदीर्णांगा वीराः शोणितशोभिताः । बभूवुः समरप्रांते चित्रं समभवद्रणम्

vajrāstreṇa vidīrṇāṁgā vīrāḥ śoṇitaśobhitāḥ babhūvuḥ samaraprāṁte citraṁ samabhavadraṇam

Their bodies torn open by the thunderbolt-missile, warriors resplendent with blood filled the edge of that field — a wondrous battle it had become.

Verse 47 (padma.5.45.47)

तदा प्रकुपितोऽत्यंतं राजा वीरमणिर्महान् । ब्रह्मास्त्रं चाप आधत्त वैरिदाहकमद्भुतम्

tadā prakupito'tyaṁtaṁ rājā vīramaṇirmahān brahmāstraṁ cāpa ādhatta vairidāhakamadbhutam

Then the great King Viramani, filled with intense fury, fitted to his bow the wondrous Brahmastra, that burner of foes.

Verse 48 (padma.5.45.48)

शत्रुघ्नः शरमादाय सस्मार सुमनोहरम् । अस्त्रं तद्योगिनीदत्तं सर्ववैरिविमोहनम्

śatrughnaḥ śaramādāya sasmāra sumanoharam astraṁ tadyoginīdattaṁ sarvavairivimohanam

Shatrughna took up an arrow and called to mind that most excellent missile, given to him once by a yogini, the bewilderer of every foe.

Verse 49 (padma.5.45.49)

ब्रह्मास्त्रं तत्करभ्रष्टमागतं वैरिणं प्रति । तावच्छत्रुघ्ननाम्ना तु तन्मुक्तं मोहनास्त्रकम्

brahmāstraṁ tatkarabhraṣṭamāgataṁ vairiṇaṁ prati tāvacchatrughnanāmnā tu tanmuktaṁ mohanāstrakam

Even as the Brahmastra, loosed from his hand, sped toward his foe — at that very instant the Mohana missile was released, invoked in Shatrughna's name.

Verse 50 (padma.5.45.50)

मोहनास्त्रेण तद्ब्राह्मं द्विधाछिन्नं क्षणादिह । लग्नं राज्ञो हृदि क्षिप्रं मूर्च्छां संप्रापयन्नृपम्

mohanāstreṇa tadbrāhmaṁ dvidhāchinnaṁ kṣaṇādiha lagnaṁ rājño hṛdi kṣipraṁ mūrcchāṁ saṁprāpayannṛpam

By the Mohana missile that Brahma-weapon was instantly cleft in two; it swiftly lodged in the king's own heart and cast him into a swoon.

Verse 51 (padma.5.45.51)

ते बाणाः शतशो मुक्ताः शत्रुघ्नेन महीभृता । सर्वेपि मूर्च्छिता वीरा गणा रुद्रस्य ये पुनः

te bāṇāḥ śataśo muktāḥ śatrughnena mahībhṛtā sarvepi mūrcchitā vīrā gaṇā rudrasya ye punaḥ

Then hundreds of arrows, loosed by King Shatrughna, cast down once more into a swoon all those very ganas of Rudra who had just been revived —

Verse 52 (padma.5.45.52)

शिवस्य चरणोपस्थे मूढाः पेतुर्महीतले । तदा शिवः प्रकुपितो रथे तिष्ठन्ययौ नृपम्

śivasya caraṇopasthe mūḍhāḥ peturmahītale tadā śivaḥ prakupito rathe tiṣṭhanyayau nṛpam

— and, senseless, they fell to the ground at the very feet of Shiva. Then Shiva, greatly enraged, mounted his chariot and advanced upon the king.

Verse 53 (padma.5.45.53)

शिवेन सहसा योद्धुं समायातो रणांगणे । शत्रुघ्नः सज्जमात्तज्यं धनुः कृत्वा व्ययुद्ध्यत

śivena sahasā yoddhuṁ samāyāto raṇāṁgaṇe śatrughnaḥ sajjamāttajyaṁ dhanuḥ kṛtvā vyayuddhyata

Shatrughna came forth at once to give battle to Shiva upon that field, and, his bow ready and strung, joined combat with him.

Verse 54 (padma.5.45.54)

तयोः समभवद्युद्धं घोरं वैरिविदारणम् । शस्त्रास्त्रैर्बहुधामुक्तैरादीपित दिगंतरम्

tayoḥ samabhavadyuddhaṁ ghoraṁ vairividāraṇam śastrāstrairbahudhāmuktairādīpita digaṁtaram

Between the two of them there arose a terrible, foe-rending battle, in which the many weapons and missiles loosed lit up every quarter of the sky.

Verse 55 (padma.5.45.55)

अस्त्रप्रत्यस्त्रसंघातैस्ताडनप्रतिताडनैः । देवानामपि दैत्यानां नैतादृग्रणमंडलम्

astrapratyastrasaṁghātaistāḍanapratitāḍanaiḥ devānāmapi daityānāṁ naitādṛgraṇamaṁḍalam

With the clash of missile against counter-missile, blow upon counter-blow — never had gods nor even demons beheld such a battlefield as this.

Verse 56 (padma.5.45.56)

तदा व्याकुलितोऽत्यंतं शत्रुघ्नः शिवसंगरे । सस्मार स्वामिनं तत्र पावनेरुपदेशतः

tadā vyākulito'tyaṁtaṁ śatrughnaḥ śivasaṁgare sasmāra svāminaṁ tatra pāvanerupadeśataḥ

Then Shatrughna, greatly troubled in that battle with Shiva, called his own lord to mind, upon the counsel of the son of Pavana.

Verse 57 (padma.5.45.57)

हा नाथ भ्रातरत्युग्रः शिवः प्राणापहारणम् । करोति धनुरुद्यम्य त्रायस्व रणमंडले

hā nātha bhrātaratyugraḥ śivaḥ prāṇāpahāraṇam karoti dhanurudyamya trāyasva raṇamaṁḍale

"Alas, my lord and brother! This fierce Shiva, raising his bow, is intent on taking my very life — save me here upon this battlefield!"

Verse 58 (padma.5.45.58)

अनेके दुःखपाथोधिं तीर्णा राम तवाख्यया । मामप्युद्धर दुःखस्थं रामराम कृपानिधे

aneke duḥkhapāthodhiṁ tīrṇā rāma tavākhyayā māmapyuddhara duḥkhasthaṁ rāmarāma kṛpānidhe

"O Rama, by your name alone have many crossed the ocean of sorrow; deliver me too, sunk in sorrow — O Rama, Rama, treasure of compassion!"

Verse 59 (padma.5.45.59)

इत्थं वक्ति यदा तावद्वीक्षितो रणमंडले । नीलोत्पलदलश्यामो रामो राजीवलोचनः

itthaṁ vakti yadā tāvadvīkṣito raṇamaṁḍale nīlotpaladalaśyāmo rāmo rājīvalocanaḥ

Even as he spoke thus, upon that battlefield Rama himself appeared — dark as the petal of the blue lotus, lotus-eyed —

Verse 60 (padma.5.45.60)

मृगशृंगं कटौ धृत्वा दीक्षितं वपुरुद्वहन् । तं दृष्ट्वा विस्मयं प्राप शत्रुघ्नः समरांगणे

mṛgaśṛṁgaṁ kaṭau dhṛtvā dīkṣitaṁ vapurudvahan taṁ dṛṣṭvā vismayaṁ prāpa śatrughnaḥ samarāṁgaṇe

— a deer-horn at his waist, bearing the very form of one consecrated for a sacred vow. Seeing him, Shatrughna was filled with wonder there upon the battlefield.
