The Release of the Horse
Verse 1 (padma.5.48.1)
शेष उवाच। इति प्रोक्तं तु मुनिना संश्रुत्य परवीरहा । विस्मयं मानयामास हृदि शौनकमब्रवीत्
śeṣa uvāca iti proktaṁ tu muninā saṁśrutya paravīrahā vismayaṁ mānayāmāsa hṛdi śaunakamabravīt
Shesha said: Hearing this told by the sage, Shatrughna, the slayer of enemy heroes, filled with wonder at heart, said to Shaunaka —
Verse 2 (padma.5.48.2)
शत्रुघ्न उवाच। कर्मणो गहना वार्ता यया सात्वकनामधृत् । दिवं प्राप्तोऽपि महता कर्मणा राक्षसीकृतः
śatrughna uvāca karmaṇo gahanā vārtā yayā sātvakanāmadhṛt divaṁ prāpto'pi mahatā karmaṇā rākṣasīkṛtaḥ
Shatrughna said: "Deep indeed is this account of karma, by which one named Satvaka, though he had reached heaven through great merit, was turned into a rakshasa."
Verse 3 (padma.5.48.3)
स्वामिन्वद महर्षे त्वं कर्मणां स्वगतिर्यथा । येन कर्मविपाकेन यादृशं नरकं भवेत्
svāminvada maharṣe tvaṁ karmaṇāṁ svagatiryathā yena karmavipākena yādṛśaṁ narakaṁ bhavet
"My lord, tell me, O great sage, how the course of deeds unfolds of itself — by the ripening of which deed does one attain which hell?"
Verse 4 (padma.5.48.4)
शौनक उवाच। धन्योसि राघवश्रेष्ठ यत्ते मतिरियं शुभा । जानन्नपि हितार्थाय लोकानां त्वं ब्रवीषि भोः
śaunaka uvāca dhanyosi rāghavaśreṣṭha yatte matiriyaṁ śubhā jānannapi hitārthāya lokānāṁ tvaṁ bravīṣi bhoḥ
Shaunaka said: "Blessed are you, best of the Raghus, that your mind turns to so worthy a question; though you know it already, you ask it for the good of all people."
Verse 5 (padma.5.48.5)
कथयामि विचित्राणां कर्मणां विविधा गतीः । ताः शृणुष्व महाराज यच्छ्रुत्वा मोक्षमाप्नुयात्
kathayāmi vicitrāṇāṁ karmaṇāṁ vividhā gatīḥ tāḥ śṛṇuṣva mahārāja yacchrutvā mokṣamāpnuyāt
"I shall tell of the many and varied courses of these diverse deeds; hear them, great king, for by hearing them one may attain liberation."
Verse 6 (padma.5.48.6)
परवित्तं परापत्यं कलत्रं पारकं च यः । बलात्कारेण गृह्णाति भोगबुद्ध्या च दुर्मतिः
paravittaṁ parāpatyaṁ kalatraṁ pārakaṁ ca yaḥ balātkāreṇa gṛhṇāti bhogabuddhyā ca durmatiḥ
"Whoever, in evil-mindedness and out of desire for enjoyment, forcibly seizes another's wealth, another's offspring, or another's wife —"
Verse 7 (padma.5.48.7)
कालपाशेन संबद्धो यमदूतैर्महाबलैः । तामिस्रे पात्यते तावद्यावद्वर्षसहस्रकम्
kālapāśena saṁbaddho yamadūtairmahābalaiḥ tāmisre pātyate tāvadyāvadvarṣasahasrakam
"— bound by the noose of Time, by the mighty messengers of Yama, he is cast into Tamisra for a full thousand years."
Verse 8 (padma.5.48.8)
तत्र ताडनमुद्धूताः कुर्वंति यमकिंकराः । पापभोगेन संतप्तस्ततो योनिं तु शौकरीम्
tatra tāḍanamuddhūtāḥ kurvaṁti yamakiṁkarāḥ pāpabhogena saṁtaptastato yoniṁ tu śaukarīm
"There the servants of Yama, filled with fury, beat him; scorched by the fruit of his sin, he then attains the womb of a boar."
Verse 9 (padma.5.48.9)
तत्र भुक्त्वा महादुःखं मानुषत्वं गमिष्यति । रोगादिचिह्नितं तत्र दुर्यशो ज्ञापकं स्वकम्
tatra bhuktvā mahāduḥkhaṁ mānuṣatvaṁ gamiṣyati rogādicihnitaṁ tatra duryaśo jñāpakaṁ svakam
"Having endured great suffering there, he shall be born a man at last, marked with disease and the like — a sign proclaiming his own ill repute."
Verse 10 (padma.5.48.10)
भूतद्रोहं विधायैव केवलं स्वकुटुंबकम् । पुष्णाति पापनिरतः सोंऽधतामिस्रके पतेत्
bhūtadrohaṁ vidhāyaiva kevalaṁ svakuṭuṁbakam puṣṇāti pāpanirataḥ soṁ'dhatāmisrake patet
"He who, doing violence to living beings, nourishes only his own family, forever given to sin — he falls into Andhatamisra."
Verse 11 (padma.5.48.11)
ये नरा इह जंतूनां वधं कुर्वंति वै मृषा । ते रौरवे निपात्यंते भिद्यंते रुरुभी रुषा
ye narā iha jaṁtūnāṁ vadhaṁ kurvaṁti vai mṛṣā te raurave nipātyaṁte bhidyaṁte rurubhī ruṣā
"Those men who here slay creatures falsely, without cause — they are cast into Raurava, torn apart there by the Rurus in their fury."
Verse 12 (padma.5.48.12)
यः स्वोदरार्थे भूतानां वधमाचरति स्फुटम् । महारौरवसंज्ञे तु पात्यते स यमाज्ञया
yaḥ svodarārthe bhūtānāṁ vadhamācarati sphuṭam mahārauravasaṁjñe tu pātyate sa yamājñayā
"Whoever plainly slays creatures for the sake of his own belly — he, by Yama's own command, is cast into the hell called Maharaurava."
Verse 13 (padma.5.48.13)
यो वै निजं तु जनकं ब्राह्मणं द्वेष्टि पापकृत् । कालसूत्रे महादुष्टे योजनायुतविस्तृते
yo vai nijaṁ tu janakaṁ brāhmaṇaṁ dveṣṭi pāpakṛt kālasūtre mahāduṣṭe yojanāyutavistṛte
"Whoever, given to sin, hates his own father, or a brahmin — he falls into Kalasutra, most terrible, ten thousand yojanas in extent."
Verse 14 (padma.5.48.14)
यावंति पशुरोमाणि गवां द्वेषं करोति यः । तावद्वर्षसहस्राणि पच्यते यमकिंकरैः
yāvaṁti paśuromāṇi gavāṁ dveṣaṁ karoti yaḥ tāvadvarṣasahasrāṇi pacyate yamakiṁkaraiḥ
"For as many thousand years as there are hairs upon a cow's body is he who bears enmity toward cows cooked by the servants of Yama."
Verse 15 (padma.5.48.15)
यो भूमौ भूपतिर्भूत्वा दंडायोग्यं तु दंडयेत् । करोति ब्राह्मणस्यापि देहदंडं च लोलुपः
yo bhūmau bhūpatirbhūtvā daṁḍāyogyaṁ tu daṁḍayet karoti brāhmaṇasyāpi dehadaṁḍaṁ ca lolupaḥ
"Whoever, having become a king upon this earth, punishes one who deserves no punishment, or, out of greed, inflicts bodily punishment even upon a brahmin —"
Verse 16 (padma.5.48.16)
स सूकरमुखैर्दुष्टैः पीड्यते यमकिंकरैः । पश्चाद्दुष्टासु योनीषु जायते पापमुक्तये
sa sūkaramukhairduṣṭaiḥ pīḍyate yamakiṁkaraiḥ paścādduṣṭāsu yonīṣu jāyate pāpamuktaye
"— is tormented by the wicked, boar-faced servants of Yama; afterward he is born into evil wombs for the purging of that sin."
Verse 17 (padma.5.48.17)
ब्राह्मणानां गवां ये तु द्रव्यं वृत्तं तथाल्पकम् । वृत्तिं वा गृह्णते मोहाल्लुंपंति स्वबलान्नराः
brāhmaṇānāṁ gavāṁ ye tu dravyaṁ vṛttaṁ tathālpakam vṛttiṁ vā gṛhṇate mohālluṁpaṁti svabalānnarāḥ
"Those men who, deluded, seize by force the wealth, small livelihood, or means of subsistence of brahmins and of cows —"
Verse 18 (padma.5.48.18)
ते परत्रांधकूपे च पात्यंते च महार्दिताः । योऽन्नं स्वयमुपाहृत्य मधुरं चात्तिलोलुपः
te paratrāṁdhakūpe ca pātyaṁte ca mahārditāḥ yo'nnaṁ svayamupāhṛtya madhuraṁ cāttilolupaḥ
"— are cast in the world beyond into Andhakupa, with the greatest suffering. He who, having procured sweet food for himself, greedy for its taste —"
Verse 19 (padma.5.48.19)
न देवाय न सुहृदे ददाति रसनापरः । स पतत्येव नरके कृमिभोजनसंज्ञिते
na devāya na suhṛde dadāti rasanāparaḥ sa patatyeva narake kṛmibhojanasaṁjñite
"— gives none to a god nor to a friend, lost only in his own tongue — falls into the hell named Krimibhojana."
Verse 20 (padma.5.48.20)
अनापदि नरो यस्तु हिरण्यादीन्यपाहरेत् । ब्रह्मस्वं वा महादुष्टे संदंशे नरके पतेत्
anāpadi naro yastu hiraṇyādīnyapāharet brahmasvaṁ vā mahāduṣṭe saṁdaṁśe narake patet
"The man who, with no calamity forcing him, steals gold and the like, or the wealth of a brahmin — falls into the terrible hell called Sandamsha."
Verse 21 (padma.5.48.21)
यः स्वदेहं प्रपुष्णाति नान्यं जानाति मूढधीः । स पात्यते तैलतप्ते कुंभीपाकेऽतिदारुणे
yaḥ svadehaṁ prapuṣṇāti nānyaṁ jānāti mūḍhadhīḥ sa pātyate tailatapte kuṁbhīpāke'tidāruṇe
"He who nourishes only his own body and knows no other, that deluded man is cast into the terrible Kumbhipaka, boiling with oil."
Verse 22 (padma.5.48.22)
यो नागम्यां स्त्रियं मोहाद्योषिद्भावाच्च कामयेत् । तं तया किंकराः सूर्म्या परिरंभं च कुर्वते
yo nāgamyāṁ striyaṁ mohādyoṣidbhāvācca kāmayet taṁ tayā kiṁkarāḥ sūrmyā pariraṁbhaṁ ca kurvate
"Whoever, in delusion, desires a woman he should not approach, from mere lust for a female form — Yama's servants make him embrace her likeness fashioned there of red-hot iron."
Verse 23 (padma.5.48.23)
ये बलाद्वेदमर्यादां लुंपंति स्वबलोद्धताः । ते वैतरण्यां पतिता मांसशोणितभक्षकाः
ye balādvedamaryādāṁ luṁpaṁti svabaloddhatāḥ te vaitaraṇyāṁ patitā māṁsaśoṇitabhakṣakāḥ
"Those who, proud of their own strength, transgress the bounds of the Veda by force — fall into the river Vaitarani, feeding there on flesh and blood."
Verse 24 (padma.5.48.24)
वृषलद्यं यः स्त्रियं कृत्वा तया गार्हस्थ्यमाचरेत् । पूयोदे निपतत्येव महादुःखसमन्वितः
vṛṣaladyaṁ yaḥ striyaṁ kṛtvā tayā gārhasthyamācaret pūyode nipatatyeva mahāduḥkhasamanvitaḥ
"Whoever takes a woman of low birth as wife and lives a householder's life with her — falls into Puyoda, filled with the greatest suffering."
Verse 25 (padma.5.48.25)
ये दंभमाश्रयंते वै धूर्ता लोकस्य वंचने । वैशसे नरके मूढाः पतंति यमताडिताः
ye daṁbhamāśrayaṁte vai dhūrtā lokasya vaṁcane vaiśase narake mūḍhāḥ pataṁti yamatāḍitāḥ
"Those cunning ones who resort to hypocrisy to deceive people — those deluded men fall into Vaishasa hell, struck by Yama's servants.
Verse 26 (padma.5.48.26)
ये सवर्णां स्त्रियं मूढा रेतः स्वं पाययंति च । रेतःकुल्यासु ते पापा रेतःपानेषु तत्पराः
ye savarṇāṁ striyaṁ mūḍhā retaḥ svaṁ pāyayaṁti ca retaḥkulyāsu te pāpā retaḥpāneṣu tatparāḥ
"Those deluded men who make a woman of their own caste drink their own seed — those sinners, given to this, are cast into rivers of it, made to drink it there in turn."
Verse 27 (padma.5.48.27)
ये चौरा वह्निदा दुष्टा गरदा ग्रामलुंठकाः । सारमेयादने ते वै पात्यंते पातकान्विताः
ye caurā vahnidā duṣṭā garadā grāmaluṁṭhakāḥ sārameyādane te vai pātyaṁte pātakānvitāḥ
"Those wicked thieves, arsonists, poisoners, and plunderers of villages — laden with sin, are cast into the hell where dogs devour the damned."
Verse 28 (padma.5.48.28)
कूटसाक्ष्यं वदत्यद्धा पुरुषः पापसंभृतः । परकीयं तु द्रव्यं यो हरति प्रसभं बली
kūṭasākṣyaṁ vadatyaddhā puruṣaḥ pāpasaṁbhṛtaḥ parakīyaṁ tu dravyaṁ yo harati prasabhaṁ balī
"The sin-laden man who plainly gives false witness, or the mighty one who forcibly steals another's wealth —"
Verse 29 (padma.5.48.29)
सोऽवीचिनरके पापी अवाग्वक्त्रः पतत्यधः । तत्र दुःखं महद्भुक्त्वा पापिष्ठां योनिमाव्रजेत्
so'vīcinarake pāpī avāgvaktraḥ patatyadhaḥ tatra duḥkhaṁ mahadbhuktvā pāpiṣṭhāṁ yonimāvrajet
"— that sinner falls headfirst, face downward, into the hell Avichi; having endured great suffering there he goes on to a most sinful womb."
Verse 30 (padma.5.48.30)
यो नरो रसनास्वादात्सुरां पिबति मूढधीः । तं पाययंति लोहस्य रसं धर्मस्य किंकराः
yo naro rasanāsvādātsurāṁ pibati mūḍhadhīḥ taṁ pāyayaṁti lohasya rasaṁ dharmasya kiṁkarāḥ
"The deluded man who drinks liquor for the taste upon his tongue — the servants of the Lord of Dharma make him drink molten iron in its place."
Verse 31 (padma.5.48.31)
यो गुरूनवमन्येत स्वविद्याचारदर्पितः । स मृतः पात्यते क्षारनरकेऽधोमुखः पुमान्
yo gurūnavamanyeta svavidyācāradarpitaḥ sa mṛtaḥ pātyate kṣāranarake'dhomukhaḥ pumān
"He who, proud of his own learning and conduct, dishonors his own teachers — that man, when he dies, falls headfirst into the hell of caustic ash."
Verse 32 (padma.5.48.32)
विश्वासघातं कुर्वंति ये नरा धर्मनिष्कृताः । शूलप्रोते च नरके पात्यंते बहुयातने
viśvāsaghātaṁ kurvaṁti ye narā dharmaniṣkṛtāḥ śūlaprote ca narake pātyaṁte bahuyātane
"Those men, fallen from Dharma, who commit betrayal of trust — are cast into the hell of the impaling stake, amid manifold torments.
Verse 33 (padma.5.48.33)
पिशुनो यो नरान्सर्वानुद्वेजयति वाक्यतः । दंदशूके च पतितो दंदशूकैः स दश्यते
piśuno yo narānsarvānudvejayati vākyataḥ daṁdaśūke ca patito daṁdaśūkaiḥ sa daśyate
"The slanderer who, by his words, torments all men — falls among serpents, and is bitten there by serpents."
Verse 34 (padma.5.48.34)
एवं राजन्ननेके वै नरकाः पापकारिणाम् । पापं कृत्वा प्रयांत्येते पीडां यांति सुदारुणाम्
evaṁ rājannaneke vai narakāḥ pāpakāriṇām pāpaṁ kṛtvā prayāṁtyete pīḍāṁ yāṁti sudāruṇām
"Thus, O king, there are many hells indeed for those who do evil; having sinned, they go on to endure this most terrible torment."
Verse 35 (padma.5.48.35)
यैर्न श्रुता रामकथा न परोपकृतिः कृता । तेषां सर्वाणि दुःखानि भवंति नरकांतरे
yairna śrutā rāmakathā na paropakṛtiḥ kṛtā teṣāṁ sarvāṇi duḥkhāni bhavaṁti narakāṁtare
"Those who have neither heard the story of Rama nor done good to others — for them alone do all these sufferings occur amid the hells."
Verse 36 (padma.5.48.36)
अत्र यस्य सुखं स्वर्गे भूयात्तस्य इतीर्यते । ये दुःखिनो रोगयुता नरकादागताश्च ते
atra yasya sukhaṁ svarge bhūyāttasya itīryate ye duḥkhino rogayutā narakādāgatāśca te
"It is said that whoever finds happiness here shall find it in heaven too; and those who are unhappy and diseased have come from hell."
Verse 37 (padma.5.48.37)
शेष उवाच। एतच्छ्रुत्वा महीपालः कंपमानः क्षणे क्षणे । पप्रच्छ भूयस्तं विप्रं सर्वसंशयनुत्तये
śeṣa uvāca etacchrutvā mahīpālaḥ kaṁpamānaḥ kṣaṇe kṣaṇe papraccha bhūyastaṁ vipraṁ sarvasaṁśayanuttaye
Shesha said: Hearing this, the king, trembling at every moment, questioned that brahmin once again, to dispel all his doubts —
Verse 38 (padma.5.48.38)
तत्तत्पापस्य चिह्नानि कथयस्व महामुने । केन पापेन किं चिह्नं भूलोके उपजायते
tattatpāpasya cihnāni kathayasva mahāmune kena pāpena kiṁ cihnaṁ bhūloke upajāyate
"Tell me, O great sage, the marks left by each of these sins — by which sin does which mark arise upon this earth?"
Verse 39 (padma.5.48.39)
इति श्रुत्वा तु तद्वाक्यं मुनिः प्रोवाच भूपतिम् । शृणु राजन्प्रवक्ष्यामि चिह्नानि पापकारिणाम्
iti śrutvā tu tadvākyaṁ muniḥ provāca bhūpatim śṛṇu rājanpravakṣyāmi cihnāni pāpakāriṇām
Hearing these words, the sage said to the king: "Listen, O king, I shall tell you the marks of those who do evil."
Verse 40 (padma.5.48.40)
शौनक उवाच। सुरापः श्यामदंतश्च नरकांते प्रजायते । अभक्ष्यभक्षकारी च जायते गुल्मकोदरः
śaunaka uvāca surāpaḥ śyāmadaṁtaśca narakāṁte prajāyate abhakṣyabhakṣakārī ca jāyate gulmakodaraḥ
Shaunaka said: "A drinker of liquor, at the end of his time in hell, is born with blackened teeth; an eater of forbidden food is born with a swollen belly."
Verse 41 (padma.5.48.41)
उदक्यावीक्षितं भुक्त्वा जायते कृमिलोदरः । श्वमार्जारादिसंस्पृष्टं भुक्त्वा दुर्गंधिमान्भवेत्
udakyāvīkṣitaṁ bhuktvā jāyate kṛmilodaraḥ śvamārjārādisaṁspṛṣṭaṁ bhuktvā durgaṁdhimānbhavet
"Eating food seen by a menstruating woman, one is born worm-ridden in the belly; eating food touched by dogs, cats, and the like, one becomes foul of smell."
Verse 42 (padma.5.48.42)
अनिवेद्य सुरादिभ्यो भुंजानो जायते नरः । उदरे रोगवान्दुःखी महारोगप्रपीडितः
anivedya surādibhyo bhuṁjāno jāyate naraḥ udare rogavānduḥkhī mahārogaprapīḍitaḥ
"The man who eats without first offering it to the gods and the like is born afflicted with disease of the belly, in suffering, racked by grave illness."
Verse 43 (padma.5.48.43)
परान्नविघ्नकरणादजीर्णमभिजायते । मंदोदराग्निर्भवति सति द्रव्ये कदन्नदः
parānnavighnakaraṇādajīrṇamabhijāyate maṁdodarāgnirbhavati sati dravye kadannadaḥ
"From obstructing another's meal, indigestion follows; and one who, though able, serves bad food becomes weak of digestive fire."
Verse 44 (padma.5.48.44)
विषदश्छर्दिरोगी स्यान्मार्गहा पादरोगवान् । पिशुनो नरकस्यांते जायते श्वासकासवान्
viṣadaśchardirogī syānmārgahā pādarogavān piśuno narakasyāṁte jāyate śvāsakāsavān
"A poisoner becomes a sufferer of vomiting; one who blocks a road is afflicted with foot-disease; a slanderer, at the end of hell, is born with asthma and cough."
Verse 45 (padma.5.48.45)
धूर्तोऽपस्माररोगी स्याच्छूली च परतापनः । दावाग्निदायकश्चैव रक्तातीसारवान्भवेत्
dhūrto'pasmārarogī syācchūlī ca paratāpanaḥ dāvāgnidāyakaścaiva raktātīsāravānbhavet
"A rogue becomes epileptic; one who torments others is covered with boils; one who sets forest fires is afflicted with bloody dysentery."
Verse 46 (padma.5.48.46)
सुरालये जले वापि शकृत्क्षेपं करोति यः । गुदरोगो भवेत्तस्य पापरूपः सुदारुणः
surālaye jale vāpi śakṛtkṣepaṁ karoti yaḥ gudarogo bhavettasya pāparūpaḥ sudāruṇaḥ
"Whoever defecates in a temple or in water — his sin takes shape as a most terrible affliction of that part of the body."
Verse 47 (padma.5.48.47)
गर्भपातनजा रोगाः क्षयमेहजलोदराः । प्रतिमा भंगकारी च अप्रतिष्ठश्च जायते
garbhapātanajā rogāḥ kṣayamehajalodarāḥ pratimā bhaṁgakārī ca apratiṣṭhaśca jāyate
"From causing an abortion arise consumption, diabetes, and dropsy; one who breaks a sacred image is born without standing among men."
Verse 48 (padma.5.48.48)
दुष्टवादी खंडितः स्यात्खल्वाटः परनिंदकः । सभायां पक्षपाती च जायते पक्षघातवान्
duṣṭavādī khaṁḍitaḥ syātkhalvāṭaḥ paraniṁdakaḥ sabhāyāṁ pakṣapātī ca jāyate pakṣaghātavān
"A false speaker becomes crippled; a slanderer of others becomes bald; one who shows favoritism in an assembly is born paralyzed."
Verse 49 (padma.5.48.49)
परोक्तहास्यकृत्काणः कुनखी विप्रहेमहृत् । तुंदीवरी ताम्रचौरः कांस्यहृत्पुंडरीकिकः
paroktahāsyakṛtkāṇaḥ kunakhī viprahemahṛt tuṁdīvarī tāmracauraḥ kāṁsyahṛtpuṁḍarīkikaḥ
"One who mocks another becomes one-eyed; a thief of a brahmin's gold gets diseased nails; a stealer of copper grows pot-bellied; a stealer of bronze is marked with white blotches."
Verse 50 (padma.5.48.50)
त्रपुहारी च पुरुषो जायते पिंगमूर्द्धजः । शीसहारी च पुरुषो जायते शीर्षरोगवान्
trapuhārī ca puruṣo jāyate piṁgamūrddhajaḥ śīsahārī ca puruṣo jāyate śīrṣarogavān
"A thief of tin is born with reddish-brown hair; a thief of lead is born afflicted with disease of the head."
Verse 51 (padma.5.48.51)
घृतचौरस्तु पुरुषो जायते नेत्ररोगवान् । लोहहारी च पुरुषो बर्बरांगः प्रजायते
ghṛtacaurastu puruṣo jāyate netrarogavān lohahārī ca puruṣo barbarāṁgaḥ prajāyate
"A thief of ghee is born with disease of the eyes; a thief of iron is born with a stunted and deformed body."
Verse 52 (padma.5.48.52)
चर्महारी च पुरुषो जायते मेदसा वृतः । मधुचौरस्तु पुरुषो जायते बस्तिगंधवान्
carmahārī ca puruṣo jāyate medasā vṛtaḥ madhucaurastu puruṣo jāyate bastigaṁdhavān
"A thief of leather is born burdened with excess flesh; a thief of honey is born with a foul-smelling groin."
Verse 53 (padma.5.48.53)
तैलचौर्येण भवति नरः कण्ड्वातिपीडितः । आमान्नहरणाच्चैव दंतहीनः प्रजायते
tailacauryeṇa bhavati naraḥ kaṇḍvātipīḍitaḥ āmānnaharaṇāccaiva daṁtahīnaḥ prajāyate
"By the theft of oil one is plagued by intense itching; from stealing raw grain one is born toothless."

पक्वान्नहरणाच्चैव जिह्वारोगयुतो भवेत् । मातृगामी च पुरुषो जायते लिंगवर्जितः
pakvānnaharaṇāccaiva jihvārogayuto bhavet mātṛgāmī ca puruṣo jāyate liṁgavarjitaḥ
"From stealing cooked food comes disease of the tongue; a man who violates his own mother is born without the male organ."
Verse 55 (padma.5.48.55)
गुरुजायाभिगमनान्मूत्रकृच्छ्रः प्रजायते । भगिनीं चैव गमने पीतकुष्ठः प्रजायते
gurujāyābhigamanānmūtrakṛcchraḥ prajāyate bhaginīṁ caiva gamane pītakuṣṭhaḥ prajāyate
"From violating the teacher's wife comes painful urination; and from union with a sister comes yellow leprosy."
Verse 56 (padma.5.48.56)
स्वसुतागमने चैव रक्तकुष्ठः प्रजायते । भ्रातृभार्याभिगमने गुल्मकुष्ठः प्रजायते
svasutāgamane caiva raktakuṣṭhaḥ prajāyate bhrātṛbhāryābhigamane gulmakuṣṭhaḥ prajāyate
"From union with one's own daughter comes red leprosy; from union with a brother's wife comes lump-leprosy."
Verse 57 (padma.5.48.57)
स्वामिगम्यादिगमने जायते दद्रुमंडलम् । विश्वस्तभार्यागमने गजचर्मा प्रजायते
svāmigamyādigamane jāyate dadrumaṁḍalam viśvastabhāryāgamane gajacarmā prajāyate
"From union with the wife of one's master and the like come circular ringworm patches; from union with a wife who trusted him, one is born with skin like an elephant's."
Verse 58 (padma.5.48.58)
पितृष्वस्रभिगमने दक्षिणांगे व्रणी भवेत् । मातुलान्यास्तु गमने वामांगे व्रणवान्भवेत्
pitṛṣvasrabhigamane dakṣiṇāṁge vraṇī bhavet mātulānyāstu gamane vāmāṁge vraṇavānbhavet
"From union with a paternal aunt, a wound appears on the right side of the body; from union with a maternal uncle's wife, on the left."
Verse 59 (padma.5.48.59)
पितृव्यपत्नीगमने कटौ कुष्ठः प्रजायते । मित्रभार्याभिगमने मृतभार्यः प्रजायते
pitṛvyapatnīgamane kaṭau kuṣṭhaḥ prajāyate mitrabhāryābhigamane mṛtabhāryaḥ prajāyate
"From union with a paternal uncle's wife comes leprosy of the waist; from union with a friend's wife, one's own future wife is fated to die."
Verse 60 (padma.5.48.60)
स्वगोत्रस्त्रीप्रसंगेन जायते च भगंदरः । तपस्विनीप्रसंगेन प्रमेहो जायते नरे
svagotrastrīprasaṁgena jāyate ca bhagaṁdaraḥ tapasvinīprasaṁgena prameho jāyate nare
"From union with a woman of one's own lineage comes fistula; from union with an ascetic woman, diabetes arises in that man."

श्रोत्रियस्त्रीप्रसंगेन जायते नासिकाव्रणी । दीक्षितस्त्रीप्रसंगेन जायते दुष्टरक्तसृक्
śrotriyastrīprasaṁgena jāyate nāsikāvraṇī dīkṣitastrīprasaṁgena jāyate duṣṭaraktasṛk
"From union with a Vedic scholar's wife comes a wound of the nose; from union with a consecrated woman comes a corruption of the blood."
Verse 62 (padma.5.48.62)
स्वजातिजायागमने जायते हृदयव्रणी । जात्युन्नतस्त्रीगमने जायते मस्तकव्रणी
svajātijāyāgamane jāyate hṛdayavraṇī jātyunnatastrīgamane jāyate mastakavraṇī
"From union with another man's wife of one's own caste comes a wound of the heart; from union with a woman of higher birth, a wound of the head."
Verse 63 (padma.5.48.63)
पशुयोनौ च गमनान्मूत्रघातः प्रजायते । एते दोषा नराणां स्युर्नरकांते न संशयः
paśuyonau ca gamanānmūtraghātaḥ prajāyate ete doṣā narāṇāṁ syurnarakāṁte na saṁśayaḥ
"From union with an animal comes retention of urine — these are the faults that befall men at the end of their time in hell, without doubt."
Verse 64 (padma.5.48.64)
स्त्रीणामपि भवंत्येते तत्तत्पुरुषसंगमात् । एवं राजन्हि चिह्नानि कीर्तितानि सुपापिनाम्
strīṇāmapi bhavaṁtyete tattatpuruṣasaṁgamāt evaṁ rājanhi cihnāni kīrtitāni supāpinām
"These befall women too, through their union with this or that man. Thus, O king, have the marks of the greatly sinful been declared."
Verse 65 (padma.5.48.65)
दानपुण्यप्रसंगेन तीर्थादिक्रियया तथा । रामस्य चरितं श्रुत्वा तपसा वाक्षयं व्रजेत्
dānapuṇyaprasaṁgena tīrthādikriyayā tathā rāmasya caritaṁ śrutvā tapasā vākṣayaṁ vrajet
"Through the occasion of charity and merit, through pilgrimage and the like, and through austerity too, one may pass beyond decay — by hearing the story of Rama."
Verse 66 (padma.5.48.66)
सर्वेषामेव पापानां हरिकीर्तिधुनी नृणाम् । क्षालयेत्पापिनां पंकं नात्र कार्या विचारणा
sarveṣāmeva pāpānāṁ harikīrtidhunī nṛṇām kṣālayetpāpināṁ paṁkaṁ nātra kāryā vicāraṇā
"For all the sins of men, the very river of Hari's glory washes away the mud of sin from sinners — of this there is no need for doubt."
Verse 67 (padma.5.48.67)
यो नावमन्येत हरिं तस्य यागाविधि श्रुताः । तीर्थान्यपि सुपुण्यानि पावितुं न क्षमाणि तम्
yo nāvamanyeta hariṁ tasya yāgāvidhi śrutāḥ tīrthānyapi supuṇyāni pāvituṁ na kṣamāṇi tam
"Whoever dishonors Hari — for him neither the rites of sacrifice as taught, nor even the most sacred places of pilgrimage, have the power to purify."
Verse 68 (padma.5.48.68)
हसते कीर्त्यमानं यश्चरित्रं ज्ञानदुर्बलः । न तस्य नरकान्मुक्तिः कल्पांतेऽपि भविष्यति
hasate kīrtyamānaṁ yaścaritraṁ jñānadurbalaḥ na tasya narakānmuktiḥ kalpāṁte'pi bhaviṣyati
"Whoever, weak in understanding, mocks the singing of his glory — for him there shall be no release from hell, even at the end of an aeon."
Verse 69 (padma.5.48.69)
या हि राजन्विमोक्षार्थं हयस्यानुचरैः सह । श्रावय श्रीशचरितं यतो वाहगतिर्भवेत्
yā hi rājanvimokṣārthaṁ hayasyānucaraiḥ saha śrāvaya śrīśacaritaṁ yato vāhagatirbhavet
"Therefore, O king, for the sake of release, let the story of the Lord of Lakshmi be recounted, together with the horse's attendants, so that the horse may move again."
Verse 70 (padma.5.48.70)
शेष उवाच। इति श्रुत्वा प्रहृष्टोऽभूच्छत्रुघ्नः परवीरहा । प्रणम्य तं परिक्रम्य ययौ सेवकसंयुतः
śeṣa uvāca iti śrutvā prahṛṣṭo'bhūcchatrughnaḥ paravīrahā praṇamya taṁ parikramya yayau sevakasaṁyutaḥ
Shesha said: Hearing this, Shatrughna, slayer of enemy heroes, was greatly delighted; bowing to him and circling him in reverence, he set out together with his servants.
Verse 71 (padma.5.48.71)
तत्र गत्वा स हनुमान्हयवर्यस्य पार्श्वतः । उवाच रामचरितं महादुर्गतिनाशकम्
tatra gatvā sa hanumānhayavaryasya pārśvataḥ uvāca rāmacaritaṁ mahādurgatināśakam
Going there, Hanuman, at the side of that finest of horses, recounted the story of Rama, the destroyer of the greatest misfortune.
Verse 72 (padma.5.48.72)
याहि देव विमानं स्वं रामकीर्तनपुण्यतः । स्वैरं चर स्वलोके त्वं मुक्तो भव कुयोनितः
yāhi deva vimānaṁ svaṁ rāmakīrtanapuṇyataḥ svairaṁ cara svaloke tvaṁ mukto bhava kuyonitaḥ
"Go now, O being, to your own celestial car, by the merit of hearing Rama's glory recounted; roam freely in your own world, freed at last from your evil birth."
Verse 73 (padma.5.48.73)
इति वाक्यं समाकर्ण्य शत्रुघ्नो यावदास्थितः । तावद्ददर्श विमलं देवं वैमानिकं वरम्
iti vākyaṁ samākarṇya śatrughno yāvadāsthitaḥ tāvaddadarśa vimalaṁ devaṁ vaimānikaṁ varam
No sooner had these words been spoken than Shatrughna, still standing there, beheld a pure and radiant being, resplendent with his heavenly car.
Verse 74 (padma.5.48.74)
स उवाच विमुक्तोऽहं रामकीर्तनसंश्रुतेः । यामि स्वं भवनं राजन्नाज्ञापय महामते
sa uvāca vimukto'haṁ rāmakīrtanasaṁśruteḥ yāmi svaṁ bhavanaṁ rājannājñāpaya mahāmate
He said: "By hearing Rama's glory sung I am freed; I go now to my own abode, O king — command me further, O great-minded one, if aught remains."
Verse 75 (padma.5.48.75)
इत्युक्त्वा प्रययौ देवो विमाने स्वे परिस्थितः । तदा विस्मयमापुस्ते शत्रुघ्नेन सहानुगाः
ityuktvā prayayau devo vimāne sve paristhitaḥ tadā vismayamāpuste śatrughnena sahānugāḥ
Having spoken thus, that being departed, seated in his own celestial car; and all of them, together with Shatrughna, were filled with wonder.
Verse 76 (padma.5.48.76)
ततो वाहो विनिर्मुक्तो गात्रस्तंभाच्च भूतलात् । ययौ तद्विपिनं सर्वं भ्रमन्पक्षिसमाकुलम्
tato vāho vinirmukto gātrastaṁbhācca bhūtalāt yayau tadvipinaṁ sarvaṁ bhramanpakṣisamākulam
Then the horse, freed at last from the rigidity of its limbs, set out across the ground, roaming through that whole forest, alive with birds.
