The Meeting with Raghunatha
Verse 1 (padma.5.53.1)
sugrīvastu tatkaṭakaṁ bhagnaṁ vīkṣya raṇāṁgaṇe svāminaṁ mūrcchitaṁ vāpi yayau yoddhuṁ nṛpaṁ prati
Sugriva, seeing that army routed upon the battlefield, and his own lord fallen in a swoon, set out to fight against the king.
Verse 2 (padma.5.53.2)
āgaccha bhūpa sarvānno mūrcchayitvā kuto bhavān gacchati kṣipraṁ māṁ dehi yuddhaṁ raṇaviśārada
"Come, O king, having cast us all into a swoon, where will you go? Give me battle at once, O one skilled in war."
Verse 3 (padma.5.53.3)
evamuktvā nagaṁ kaṁcidviśālaṁ śākhayā yutam utpāṭya prāharattasya mastake balasaṁyutaḥ
Having spoken thus, he uprooted a certain vast tree, laden with branches, and struck him upon the head with all his strength.
Verse 4 (padma.5.53.4)
tena prahāreṇa mahābalo nṛpaḥ saṁvīkṣyasu grīvamatho svacāpe bāṇānsamādhāya śitānsaroṣā jjaghāna vakṣasyatipauruṣo balī
Struck by that blow, the mighty king still fitted sharp arrows to his own bow at the sight of Sugriva, and, in fury, that most valorous and mighty one struck him upon the chest.
Verse 5 (padma.5.53.5)
tānbāṇānvyadhamatsarvānsugrīvaḥ sahasā hasan tāḍayāmāsa hṛdaye surathaṁ sumahābalaḥ
Sugriva, laughing, suddenly shattered every one of those arrows, and, most mighty, struck Suratha full in the heart.
Verse 6 (padma.5.53.6)
parvataiḥ śikharaiścaiva nagairdviradavarṣmabhiḥ vegātsaṁtāḍayāmāsa dārayansurathaṁ nakhaiḥ
With mountains, with peaks, with trees the size of elephants, he struck at him with speed, rending Suratha with his very claws.
Verse 7 (padma.5.53.7)
tamapyāśu babaṁdhāstrādrāmasaṁjñātsudāruṇāt baddhaḥ kapivaro mene surathaṁ rāmasevakam
Him too the king swiftly bound with the most terrible missile named for Rama; and that finest of monkeys, thus bound, deemed Suratha a true servant of Rama.
Verse 8 (padma.5.53.8)
gajo yathāyasamayīṁ śṛṁkhalāṁ pādalaṁbitām prāpya kiṁcinna vai kartuṁ śaknoti sa tathā hyabhūt
As an elephant, once fitted with an iron chain hanging from its foot, can do nothing at all — so indeed did he become.
Verse 9 (padma.5.53.9)
jitaṁ tena mahārājñā surathena suputriṇā sarvānvīrānrathe sthāpya yayau svanagaraṁ prati
That great king Suratha, blessed with fine sons, won the victory; and, placing all the heroes upon his chariot, he set out toward his own city.
Verse 10 (padma.5.53.10)
gatvā sabhāyāṁ sumahānbaddhaṁ mārutimabravīt smara śrīraghunāthaṁ tvaṁ dayāluṁ bhaktapālakam
Going into his assembly, he said there to Maruti, bound yet greatly honored: "Call to mind Shri Raghunatha, merciful, protector of his devotees —"
Verse 11 (padma.5.53.11)
yathā tvāṁ baṁdhanātsadyo mocayiṣyati suṣṭhudhīḥ nānyathāyutavarṣeṇa mocayiṣyāmi baṁdhanāt
"— so that he, of excellent wisdom, may swiftly free you from your bonds; otherwise, not even in ten thousand years shall I release you from this bondage."
Verse 12 (padma.5.53.12)
ityuktamākarṇya samīrajastadā subaddhamātmānamavekṣya vīrān saṁmūrcchitāñchatruśarābhighāta - pīḍāyutānbaṁdhanamuktaye smarat
Hearing this said, the son of the wind, seeing himself thus bound fast, and the heroes fallen senseless, afflicted by the blows of enemy arrows, called to mind, for his release from bondage —
Verse 13 (padma.5.53.13)
śrīrāmacaṁdraṁ raghuvaṁśajātaṁ sītāpatiṁ paṁkajapatranetram svamuktaye baṁdhanataḥ kṛpāluṁ sasmāra sarvaiḥ karaṇairviśokaiḥ
— Shri Ramachandra, born of the Raghu line, lord of Sita, his eyes like lotus-petals, merciful, freed of all sorrow, remembering him with his every faculty for his own release.
Verse 14 (padma.5.53.14)

Hanuman said: "Alas, my lord! Alas, best among men! Alas, merciful one! O husband of Sita, your face graced by lovely curling locks, O burner-away of your devotees' suffering, bearer of a mind-enchanting form — free me from this bondage at once, without delay."
Verse 15 (padma.5.53.15)

"By you have been freed the finest of elephants and others, and the gods too, scorched by the fire of the demon-clans; and even the bound tresses upon a lovely woman's head have you loosed — O abode of compassion, remember me now."
Verse 16 (padma.5.53.16)

"O you who weigh Dharma together with the greatest of sages, whose feet are praised by the lord of the earth — you are ever devoted to the rites of sacrifice. Here today I lie bound fast in Suratha's fetters — O great being, O divine one, free me swiftly."
Verse 17 (padma.5.53.17)
no mocayasyatha yadi smaraṇātirekāt tvaṁ sarvadevavarapūjitapādapadma loko bhavaṁtamidamullasito'hasiṣya - ttasmādvilaṁbamiha mācara mocayāśu
"If, from mere excess of confidence in my own remembrance of you, you do not free me, O you whose lotus-feet are worshipped by the very finest of the gods — then this world, delighted, will laugh at you for it; therefore make no delay here — free me at once."
Verse 18 (padma.5.53.18)

lakṣmaṇenānugenātha bharatena suśobhitam munivṛṁdairvyāsamukhyaiḥ sametaṁ dadṛśe kapiḥ
The monkey then beheld him, resplendent, accompanied by Lakshmana and by Bharata, and attended by hosts of sages headed by Vyasa.
Verse 20 (padma.5.53.20)
