Patala Khanda · Chapter 52
The Victory of Suratha
Verse 1 (padma.5.52.1)
śeṣa uvāca caṁpakaṁ patitaṁ dṛṣṭvā surathaḥ kṣatriyo balī putraduḥkhaparītāṁgo jagāma syaṁdane sthitaḥ
Shesha said: Seeing Champaka fallen, the mighty kshatriya Suratha, his body overcome with a father's grief for his son, advanced, mounted upon his chariot.
Verse 2 (padma.5.52.2)
kapīṁdramājuhāvātha surathaḥ kopasaṁyutaḥ niḥśvāsavegaṁ saṁmuṁcanmahābalasamanvitaḥ
Suratha then, filled with fury, breathing heavily, endowed with the greatest strength, called out to the lord of monkeys.
Verse 3 (padma.5.52.3)
āhvayānaṁ nṛpaṁ dṛṣṭvā nijaṁ vīraḥ kapīśvaraḥ jagāma taṁ mahāvīro mahāvegasamanvitaḥ
Seeing that king thus challenging him, the hero, lord of monkeys, that great hero, went to him with the greatest speed.
Verse 4 (padma.5.52.4)
tamāgataṁ hanūmaṁtaṁ tṛṇīkurvaṁ tamudbhaṭān uvāca suratho rājā meghagaṁbhīrasusvaraḥ
To Hanuman thus arrived, King Suratha, who reckoned even the fiercest of warriors as mere straw, said, in a voice sonorous and deep as thunder —
Verse 5 (padma.5.52.5)
suratha uvāca dhanyosi kapivarya tvaṁ mahābalaparākramaḥ yena rāmamahatkṛtyaṁ kṛtaṁ rākṣasake pure
Suratha said: "Blessed are you, O finest of monkeys, mighty in strength and valor, by whom that great deed was wrought in the city of the rakshasas."
Verse 6 (padma.5.52.6)
tvaṁ rāmacaraṇasyāsi sevako bhaktisaṁyutaḥ tvayā vīreṇa matputraḥ pātitaścaṁpako balī
"Filled with devotion, you are a servant of Rama's feet; by you, O hero, my own mighty son Champaka has been felled."
Verse 7 (padma.5.52.7)
idānīṁ tvāṁ tu saṁbadhya gaṁtāsmi nagaremama yatnāttiṣṭha kapīśeśasatyamuktaṁ mayā smṛtam
"Now, having bound you, I shall go toward my own city; be watchful, O lord of monkeys — the truth I once spoke, I still hold firm in memory."
Verse 8 (padma.5.52.8)
iti bhāṣitamākarṇya surathasya kapīśvaraḥ uvāca dhīrayā vāṇyā raṇe vīraikabhūṣite
Hearing this said by Suratha, the lord of monkeys, in that battle adorned by heroes alone, replied in a calm and steady voice.
Verse 9 (padma.5.52.9)
hanūmānuvāca tvaṁ rāmacaraṇasmārī vayaṁ rāmasya sevakāḥ badhnāsi cenmāṁ prasabhaṁ mocayiṣyati matprabhuḥ
Hanuman said: "You are one who holds Rama's feet in mind; we are servants of Rama. If you bind me by force, my own lord shall come and set me free."
Verse 10 (padma.5.52.10)
kuru vīra bhavatsvāṁtasthitaṁ satyaṁ pratiśrutam rāmaṁ smaranvai duḥkhāṁtaṁ yāti vedā vadaṁtyadaḥ
"Keep, O hero, the vow of truth you carry in your own heart; by remembrance of Rama one crosses beyond all sorrow — so the Vedas themselves declare."
Verse 11 (padma.5.52.11)
śeṣa uvāca iti bruvaṁtaṁ surathaḥ praśasya pavanātmajam vivyādha bāṇairbahubhiḥ śitaiḥ śāṇena dāruṇaiḥ
Shesha said: To him speaking thus, Suratha, even while praising the son of the wind, pierced him with many sharp and terrible arrows, honed on the whetstone.
Verse 12 (padma.5.52.12)
tānmuktānagaṇayyātha bāṇāñchoṇitapātinaḥ kare jagrāha kodaṁḍaṁ sajyaṁ śarasamanvitam
Not even counting those blood-drawing arrows loosed against him, he took up in hand his own bow, strung and fitted with an arrow.
Verse 13 (padma.5.52.13)
gṛhītvā karayoścāpaṁ babhaṁja kupitaḥ kapiḥ cītkurvaṁstrāsayanvīrānnakhairdīrṇānsṛjanbhaṭān
Taking the bow in both hands, the enraged monkey broke it, shrieking, terrifying the assembled heroes, tearing warriors apart with his very claws.
Verse 14 (padma.5.52.14)
tena bhagnaṁ dhanurdṛṣṭvā svakīyaṁ guṇasaṁyutam aparaṁ dhanurādatta mahadguṇaviśobhitam
Seeing his own strung bow thus broken, he took up another bow, resplendent with its great bowstring.
Verse 15 (padma.5.52.15)
taccāpi jagṛhe roṣātkapiścāpaṁ babhaṁja tat anyaccāpaṁ samādatta tadbabhaṁja mahābalaḥ
That too he raised in fury; the monkey broke that bow as well; he took up yet another bow, and that too the mighty one broke.
Verse 16 (padma.5.52.16)
tasmiṁścāpe prabhagne'pi so'nyaddhanurupādadat sopi cāpaṁ babhaṁjāśu mahāvegasamanvitaḥ
Even as that bow was broken he took up still another; and that swift monkey, with the greatest speed, broke this one too at once.
Verse 17 (padma.5.52.17)
evaṁ rājñastu cāpānāmaśītirvidalīkṛtā kṣaṇe kṣaṇe mahāroṣātkurvannādānanekadhā
Thus eighty of the king's bows were shattered to pieces, while the monkey, moment by moment, raised varied roars in his towering rage.
Verse 18 (padma.5.52.18)
tadātyaṁtaṁ prakupitaḥ śaktimugrāmathādade śaktyā sa tāḍito vīraḥ papāta kṣaṇamutsukaḥ
Then, filled with extreme fury, he took up a fierce spear; struck by that spear the hero fell for a moment, though still eager for the fight.
Verse 19 (padma.5.52.19)
utthāya syaṁdanaṁ rājño jagrāha kupito bhṛśam uḍḍīnastaṁ gṛhītvā tu samudramativegataḥ
Rising up, in the greatest fury, he seized the king's very chariot and, taking flight, bore it with tremendous speed toward the ocean.
Verse 20 (padma.5.52.20)
tamuḍḍīnaṁ samālakṣya surathaḥ paravīrahā tāḍayāmāsa parighairhṛdi mārutimudyatam
Seeing him thus flying off, Suratha, slayer of enemy heroes, struck eager Maruti in the chest with bars of iron.
Verse 21 (padma.5.52.21)
muktastena ratho dūrāccūrṇībhūto'bhavatkṣaṇāt so'nyarathaṁ samāruhya yayau vegātsamīrajam
Let fall by him, the chariot was pulverized far off in an instant; mounting another chariot, the son of the wind sped away with speed.
Verse 22 (padma.5.52.22)
hanūmāṁstadrathaṁ pucche saṁveṣṭya pradhanāṁgaṇe hayasārathisaṁyuktaṁ babhaṁja sapatākinam
Hanuman, winding that chariot with his own tail upon the battlefield, shattered it, together with its horse, its charioteer, and its banner.
Verse 23 (padma.5.52.23)
anyaṁ rathaṁ samāsthāya yayau rājā mahābalaḥ babhaṁja taṁ rathaṁ vegānmārutiḥ kupitāṁgakaḥ
Mounting yet another chariot, the mighty king advanced; and that chariot too, Maruti, his very limbs afire with rage, broke with swift force.
Verse 24 (padma.5.52.24)
bhagnaṁ taṁ syaṁdanaṁ vīkṣya suratho'nyasamāśritaḥ bhagnaḥ sa tena sahasā hayasārathisaṁyutaḥ
Seeing that chariot broken, Suratha mounted another; and that one too he broke at once, together with its horse and charioteer.
Verse 25 (padma.5.52.25)
evamekonapaṁcāśadrathā bhagnā hanūmatā tatkarma vīkṣya rājāpi visismāya sasainikaḥ
Thus forty-nine chariots in all were broken by Hanuman; and seeing that feat, the king too, together with his soldiers, was struck with wonder.
Verse 26 (padma.5.52.26)
kupitaḥ prāha kīśeṁdraṁ dhanyosi pavanātmaja parākramannidaṁ karma na kartā na kariṣyati
Enraged, he said to the lord of monkeys: "Blessed are you, O son of the wind — this feat of prowess no one has done before, nor shall do again."
Verse 27 (padma.5.52.27)
kṣaṇamekaṁ pratīkṣasva yāvatsajyaṁ dhanustvaham karomi pavanodbhūta rāmapādābjaṣaṭpada
"Wait but one moment, O son of the wind, O bee at the lotus-feet of Rama, until I have strung my own bow."
Verse 28 (padma.5.52.28)
ityuktvā cāpamāttajyaṁ kṛtvā roṣapariplutaḥ astraṁ pāśupataṁ nāma saṁdadhe śara ulbaṇe
Having spoken thus, he strung his bow, and, overflowing with fury, invoked upon a fierce arrow the missile named Pashupata.
Verse 29 (padma.5.52.29)
tato bhūtāśca vetālāḥ piśācā yoginīmukhāḥ prādurbabhūvuḥ sahasā bhīṣayaṁtaḥ samīrajam
Then beings, vetalas, pishachas, and hosts of yoginis suddenly appeared, and began to terrify the son of the wind.
Verse 30 (padma.5.52.30)
kapiḥ pāśupatairastrairbaddho lokairabhīkṣitaḥ hāheti ca vadaṁtyete yāvattāvatsamīrajaḥ
All the worlds watched that monkey bound fast by the Pashupata weapon; they cried out, "Alas, alas!" — but even then the son of the wind —
Verse 31 (padma.5.52.31)
smṛtvā rāmaṁ svamanasā troṭayāmāsa tatkṣaṇāt sa muktagātraḥ sahasā yuyudhe surathaṁ nṛpam
— calling Rama to mind in his own heart, snapped those bonds that very instant; his limbs freed, he at once joined battle again with King Suratha.
Verse 32 (padma.5.52.32)
taṁ muktagātraṁ saṁvīkṣya surathaḥ paramāstravit mahābalaṁ manyamāno brāhmamastraṁ samādade
Seeing his limbs thus freed, Suratha, master of the supreme weapons, deeming him mighty indeed, took up the Brahma missile.
Verse 33 (padma.5.52.33)
mārutirbrāhmamastraṁ tu nijagāla hasanbalī tannigīrṇaṁ nṛpo dṛṣṭvā rāmaṁ sasmāra bhūmipaḥ
Mighty Maruti, laughing, swallowed that Brahma missile whole; and seeing it swallowed, the king, lord of the earth, called Rama to mind.
Verse 34 (padma.5.52.34)
smṛtvā dāśarathiṁ rāmaṁ rāmāstraṁ svaśarāsane saṁdhāya taṁ jagādedaṁ baddhosi kapipuṁgava
Calling Rama, son of Dasharatha, to mind, he fitted the Rama missile to his own bow, and said to him: "You are bound now, O bull among monkeys."
Verse 35 (padma.5.52.35)
śrutvā tatprakramedyāvattāvadbaddho raṇāṁgaṇe rājñā rāmāstrato vīro hanūmānrāmasevakaḥ
No sooner had this been proclaimed than the hero Hanuman, servant of Rama, was bound upon that battlefield by the king with the Rama missile.
Verse 36 (padma.5.52.36)
uvāca bhūpaṁ hanumānkiṁkaromi mahībhuja matsvāmyastreṇa saṁbaddho nānyena prākṛtena vai
Hanuman said to the king: "What am I to do, O lord of the earth? I am bound by my own lord's own weapon — by no other, ordinary one."
Verse 37 (padma.5.52.37)
tanmānayāmibhūpālanayasvasvapuraṁprati mocayiṣyati matsvāmī āgatya sa dayānidhiḥ
"Therefore I honor this bond; lead me, O king, to your own city; my lord, that very treasure of compassion, shall come and set me free."
Verse 38 (padma.5.52.38)
baddhe samīraje kruddhaḥ puṣkalo bhūmipaṁ yayau taṁ puṣkalaṁ samāyāṁtaṁ vivyādha vasubhiḥ śaraiḥ
When the son of the wind was thus bound, enraged Pushkala advanced upon the king; and that approaching Pushkala he pierced with eight arrows.
Verse 39 (padma.5.52.39)
anekabāṇasāhasrairnijaghāna nṛpaṁ balī rājñāneke śarāstasya cchinnāḥ pradhanamaṁḍale
With many thousand arrows that mighty one struck at the king; and there upon the battlefield many of the king's own arrows were cut down in turn.
Verse 40 (padma.5.52.40)
evaṁ samarasaṁkruddhe surathe puṣkale tathā bāṇairvyāptaṁ jagatsarvaṁ sthāsnubhūyaścariṣṇu ca
As Suratha and Pushkala thus grew furious in battle, the whole world, both what stands still and what moves, was overspread with arrows.
Verse 41 (padma.5.52.41)
teṣāṁ raṇodyamaṁ vīkṣya mumuhuḥ surasainikāḥ mānavānāṁ tu kā vārtā kṣaṇāttrāsaṁ samīyuṣām
Seeing their zeal for battle, even the soldiers of heaven were bewildered; what then of mere men, struck as they were with terror in an instant?
Verse 42 (padma.5.52.42)
astrapratyastravigamairmahāmaṁtraparistutaiḥ babhūva tumulaṁ yuddhaṁ vīrāṇāṁ romaharṣaṇam
With the clash of missile against counter-missile, hallowed by great mantras, a tumultuous battle arose, one that thrilled the very hair of the heroes.
Verse 43 (padma.5.52.43)
tadā prakupito rājā nārācaṁ tu samādade chinnaḥ sa tu krudhā muktairvatsadaṁtaiḥ sabhārataiḥ
Then the enraged king took up an iron shaft; but it was cut down by the calf-tooth-shaped arrows loosed in fury by Bharati.
Verse 44 (padma.5.52.44)
chinne tasmiñchare rājā kopādanyaṁ samādade chinatti yāvatsa śaraṁ tāvallagno hṛdi kṣataḥ
That arrow cut down, the king in anger took up another; but even as he cut it, one arrow struck home in his own chest, wounding him.
Verse 45 (padma.5.52.45)
mūrcchāṁ prāpa mahātejāḥ puṣkalo mahadadbhutam yuddhaṁ vidhāya sumahadrājñā saha mahāmatiḥ
That great-spirited, great-minded Pushkala, having waged a most mighty and wondrous battle with the king, fell then into a swoon.
Verse 46 (padma.5.52.46)
puṣkale patite rājā śatrughnaḥ śatrutāpanaḥ surathaṁ prati saṁkruddho jagāma syaṁdanasthitaḥ
When Pushkala had fallen, King Shatrughna, that scorcher of foes, filled with fury, mounted his chariot and advanced upon Suratha.
Verse 47 (padma.5.52.47)
uvāca surathaṁ bhūpaṁ rāmabhrātā mahābalaḥ tvayā mahatkṛtaṁ karma yadbaddhaḥ pavanātmajaḥ
That mighty brother of Rama said to King Suratha: "A great deed have you wrought indeed, in that you have bound the son of the wind —"
Verse 48 (padma.5.52.48)
puṣkalo'pi mahāvīrastathānye mama sainikāḥ pātitāḥ pradhane ghore mahābalaparākramāḥ
"— and have felled, in this terrible battle, even the great hero Pushkala and my other soldiers, mighty in strength and valor."
Verse 49 (padma.5.52.49)
idānīṁ tiṣṭha madvīrānpātayitvā raṇāṁgaṇe kutra yāsyasi bhūmīśa sahasva mama sāyakān
"Now, having felled my own heroes upon this field, stand your ground; O lord of the earth, where will you flee? Bear now my arrows."
Verse 50 (padma.5.52.50)
itthamāśrutya vīrasya bhāṣitaṁ suratho balī jagāda rāmapādābjaṁ dadhaccetasi śobhanam
Hearing that hero's speech, mighty Suratha, holding fast in his heart the lovely lotus-feet of Rama, replied —
Verse 51 (padma.5.52.51)
mayā te pātitāḥ saṁkhye vīrā mārutajonmukhāḥ idānīṁ pātayiṣyāmi tvāmapi pradhanāṁgaṇe
"I have felled in battle those heroes who faced the son of the wind; now I shall fell you too upon this very field."
Verse 52 (padma.5.52.52)
smarasva rāmaṁ yo vīraḥ svamāgatya prarakṣati anyathā jīvitaṁ nāsti matpuraḥ śatrutāpana
"Call to mind that hero Rama, who comes himself to protect his own devotees; otherwise, O scorcher of foes, there is no life for you before me."
Verse 53 (padma.5.52.53)
ityuktvā bāṇasāhasraistaṁ jaghāna mahīpatiḥ śatrughnaṁ śarasaṁghātapaṁjare nyadadhātparam
Having spoken thus, the king struck him with thousands of arrows, and enclosed Shatrughna within an enormous cage of them.
Verse 54 (padma.5.52.54)
śatrughnaḥ śarasaṁghātaṁ muṁcaṁtaṁ vahnidaivatam astraṁ mumoca dāhārthaṁ śarāṇāṁ nataparvaṇām
As that mass of arrows engulfed him, Shatrughna loosed, to burn it all away, the missile presided over by the god of fire, its shafts bent at every joint.
Verse 55 (padma.5.52.55)
tadastraṁ muktamālokya rājā vai suratho mahān vāruṇāstreṇa śamayanvivyādha śarakoṭibhiḥ
Seeing that missile loosed, great King Suratha quelled it with the Varuna missile, and pierced him in turn with a multitude of arrows.
Verse 56 (padma.5.52.56)
tadā tadyoginīdattamastraṁ dhanuṣi saṁdadhe mohanaṁ sarvavīrāṇāṁ nidrāprāpakamadbhutam
Then Shatrughna fitted to his bow that missile once given by a yogini, the wondrous Mohana weapon, which casts every hero into sleep.
Verse 57 (padma.5.52.57)
tanmohanaṁ mahāstraṁ sa vīkṣya rājā hariṁsmaran jagāda śatrughnamayaṁ sarvaśastrāstrakovidaḥ
Seeing that great Mohana missile, the king, calling Hari to mind, said this to Shatrughna, versed as he was in every weapon and missile —
Verse 58 (padma.5.52.58)
mohitasya mama śrīmadrāmasya smaraṇena ha nānyanmohanamābhāti mamāpi bhayatāpadam
"By remembrance of my glorious Rama I am already wholly enraptured; for me no other enchantment holds power, nor any fear, nor any torment."
Verse 59 (padma.5.52.59)
ityuktavati vīre tu mumoca sa mahāstrakam tena bāṇena saṁchinnaṁ papāta raṇamaṁḍale
Even as the hero spoke thus, he loosed that great missile at him; but cut by his arrow, it fell useless to the battlefield.
Verse 60 (padma.5.52.60)
tanmohanaṁ mahāstraṁ tu niṣphalaṁ vīkṣya bhūmipe atyaṁtaṁ vismayaṁ prāpya bāṇaṁ dhanuṣi saṁdadhe
Seeing that great Mohana missile thus rendered fruitless by the king, filled with the greatest astonishment, he fitted another arrow to his bow.
Verse 61 (padma.5.52.61)
lavaṇo yena nihato mahāsuravimardanaḥ taṁ bāṇaṁ cāpa ādhatta ghoraṁ kāntyānalaprabham
That very arrow by which Lavana, destroyer of the mightiest demons, had once been slain — that terrible shaft, radiant as fire, he now set upon his bow.
Verse 62 (padma.5.52.62)
taṁ vīkṣya rājā provāca bāṇo'yamasatāṁ hṛdi lagate rāmabhaktasya saṁmukhe'pi na bhātyasau
Seeing it, the king said: "This arrow lodges only in the hearts of the wicked; before a devotee of Rama, even face to face, it holds no power."
Verse 63 (padma.5.52.63)
ityevaṁ bhāṣamāṇaṁ tu bāṇenānena śatruhā vivyādha hṛdaye kṣipraṁ vahnijvālāsamaprabham
Even as he spoke thus, that slayer of foes swiftly pierced his heart with that very arrow, radiant as a tongue of flame.
Verse 64 (padma.5.52.64)
tena bāṇena duḥkhārto mahāpīḍāsamanvitaḥ rathopasthe kṣaṇaṁ mūrcchāmavāpa paratāpanaḥ
Stricken by that arrow, overcome with the greatest anguish, that scorcher of foes fell for a moment into a swoon upon his own chariot.
Verse 65 (padma.5.52.65)
sa kṣaṇāttāṁ vyathāṁ tīrtvā jagāda ripumagrataḥ sahasvaikaṁ prahāraṁ me kutra yāsi mamāgrataḥ
Mastering that pain in an instant, he said to his foe standing before him: "Bear one blow more of mine — where will you flee from before me?"
Verse 66 (padma.5.52.66)
evamuktvā mahāsaṁkhye bāṇamādhatta sāyake jvālāmālāparītāṁgaṁ svarṇapuṁkhasamanvitam
Having spoken thus amid that great battle, he fitted to his bow an arrow wreathed in a garland of flame, adorned with feathers of gold.
Verse 67 (padma.5.52.67)
sa bāṇo dhanuṣo muktaḥ śatrughnena pathisthitaḥ chinno'pyagraphalenāśu hṛdaye samapadyata
That arrow, loosed from Shatrughna's bow, sped upon its path; though cut in two, its very tip flew on and lodged at once in his heart.
Verse 68 (padma.5.52.68)
tena bāṇena saṁmūrchya papāta syaṁdanopari tato hāhākṛtaṁ sainyaṁ bhagnaṁ sarvaṁ parādravat
By that arrow he fell in a swoon upon his own chariot; then his army cried out in lamentation, and all, defeated, turned and fled.
Verse 69 (padma.5.52.69)
suratho jayamāpede saṁgrāme rāmasevakaḥ daśavīrā daśasutairmūrcchitāḥ patitāḥ kvacit
Suratha, servant of Rama, won the victory in that battle; ten heroes, together with the king's own ten sons, lay fallen and senseless here and there.
