The Revival of the Army
Verse 1 (padma.5.64.1)
śeṣa uvāca śatrughnaṁ patitaṁ vīkṣya surathaḥ pravaro nṛpaḥ prayayau maṇinā sṛṣṭe rathe tiṣṭhanmahādbhute
Shesha said: Seeing Shatrughna fallen, Suratha, that excellent king, advanced, standing upon a chariot fashioned of jewels, most wondrous.
Verse 2 (padma.5.64.2)
puṣkalastu raṇe pūrvaṁ pātitaḥ sa vicārayan lavaṁ yayau tadā yoddhuṁ mahāvīrabalonnatam
Pushkala, who had earlier been felled in that battle, considering this, went then to fight Lava, exalted in the strength of a great hero.
Verse 3 (padma.5.64.3)
surathaḥ kuśamāsādya bāṇānmuṁcannanekadhā vyathayāmāsa samare mahāvīraśiromaṇiḥ
Suratha, reaching Kusha, began loosing arrows in many ways; that crest-jewel of great heroes afflicted him in the battle.
Verse 4 (padma.5.64.4)
surathaṁ virathaṁ cakre bāṇairdaśabhirucchikhaiḥ dhanuściccheda tarasā sudṛḍhaṁ guṇapūritam
He rendered Suratha chariotless with ten blazing arrows, and swiftly cut down his sturdy, well-strung bow.
Verse 5 (padma.5.64.5)
astrapratyastrasaṁhāraiḥ kṣaipaṇaiḥ pratikṣepaṇaiḥ abhavattumulaṁ yuddhaṁ vīrāṇāṁ romaharṣaṇam
With missiles and counter-missiles, blow upon counter-blow, a tumultuous battle arose, one that thrilled the very hair of the heroes.
Verse 6 (padma.5.64.6)
atyaṁtaṁ samarodyukte surathe durjaye nṛpe kuśaḥ saṁciṁtayāmāsa kiṁkartavyaṁ raṇe mayā
As King Suratha, hard to conquer, pressed on with the greatest zeal in that battle, Kusha thought: "What must I do now in this fight?"
Verse 7 (padma.5.64.7)
vicārya niśitaṁ ghoraṁ sāyakaṁ samupādade hananāya nṛpasyāsya mahābalasamanvitaḥ
Having considered, filled with strength, he took up a sharp, terrible arrow, for the slaying of this king.
Verse 8 (padma.5.64.8)
tamāgataṁ śaraṁ dṛṣṭvā kālānalasamaprabham chettuṁ matiṁ cakārāśu tāvallagno mahāśaraḥ
Seeing that arrow coming, radiant as the fire of dissolution, he resolved at once to cut it down; but even then that great arrow lodged in him.
Verse 9 (padma.5.64.9)
mumūrccha samare vīro mahāvīrabalastataḥ papāta syaṁdanopasthe sārathistamupāharat
That hero, of such great heroic strength, then fell into a swoon in that battle; he collapsed upon his chariot, and his charioteer bore him away.
Verse 10 (padma.5.64.10)
surathe patite dṛṣṭvā kuśaṁ jayasamanvitam trāsayaṁtaṁ vīragaṇāniyāya pavanātmajaḥ
Seeing Suratha fallen, and Kusha victorious, terrifying the hosts of heroes, the son of the wind advanced.
Verse 11 (padma.5.64.11)
samīrasūnuṁ prabalamāyāṁtaṁ vīkṣya vānaram jahāsa darśayandaṁtānkopayanniva taṁ krudhā
Seeing that powerful monkey, the son of the wind, approaching, he laughed, showing his teeth, as though provoking him in fury.
Verse 12 (padma.5.64.12)
uvāca ca hanūmaṁtamehi tvaṁ mama saṁmukham bhetsye bāṇasahasreṇa mṛto yāsyasi yāminīm
And he said to Hanuman: "Come before me; I shall pierce you with a thousand arrows — dead, you shall pass into the night."
Verse 13 (padma.5.64.13)
ityukto hanumāñjñātvā rāmasūnuṁ mahābalam svāmikāryaṁ prakartavyamiti kṛtvā pradhāvitaḥ
Thus addressed, Hanuman, knowing him to be Rama's own mighty son, resolved that his lord's task must still be done, and rushed forward.
Verse 14 (padma.5.64.14)
śālamutpāṭya tarasā viśālaṁ śataśākhinam kuśaṁ vakṣasi saṁlakṣya yayau yoddhuṁ mahābalaḥ
Swiftly tearing up a vast Sala tree of a hundred branches, aiming it at Kusha's own chest, that mighty one advanced to do battle.
Verse 15 (padma.5.64.15)
śālahastaṁ samāyāṁtaṁ hanūmaṁtaṁ mahābalam tribhiḥ kṣuraprairvivyādha hṛdi caṁdropamairbalī
Seeing mighty Hanuman thus coming, Sala tree in hand, that mighty one pierced his chest with three crescent-headed arrows, resembling the moon.
Verse 16 (padma.5.64.16)
sa bāṇaviddhastarasā kuśena balaśālinā śālena hṛdi saṁjaghne daṁtānniṣpiṣya mārutiḥ
Pierced by that arrow, powerful Maruti, grinding his teeth, struck at once with the Sala tree against Kusha's chest.
Verse 17 (padma.5.64.17)
śālāhatastadā bālaḥ kiṁcinnākaṁpata smayāt tadā vīrāḥ praśaṁsāṁ tu pracakrustasya bālyataḥ
Struck by that Sala tree, the boy did not tremble in the least, so great was his pride; and the heroes there praised him all the more, for his very youth.
Verse 18 (padma.5.64.18)
sa śālena hato vīraḥ saṁhārāstraṁ samādade saṁhantuṁ vairiṇaṁ kopātkuśaḥ sa paramāstravit
Struck by that Sala tree, Kusha, that hero and master of the supreme weapons, in fury took up the Samhara missile to slay his foe.
Verse 19 (padma.5.64.19)
saṁhārāstraṁ samālokya durjayaṁ kuśamocitam dadhyau rāmaṁ svamanasā bhaktavighnavināśakam
Seeing that unconquerable Samhara missile loosed by Kusha, Hanuman meditated in his own mind upon Rama, destroyer of his devotees' every obstacle.
Verse 20 (padma.5.64.20)
tadā muktaṁ kuśenāśu tadastraṁ hṛdi māruteḥ lagnaṁ mahāvyathākāri tena mūrcchāmitaḥ punaḥ
Then that missile, swiftly loosed by Kusha, lodged in Maruti's very heart, bringing the greatest agony; and by it he fell into a swoon once more.
Verse 21 (padma.5.64.21)
mūrcchāṁ prāptaṁ tu taṁ dṛṣṭvā plavaṁgaṁ balasaṁyutaḥ vivyādha sāyakaistīkṣṇaiḥ sainyaṁ tatsakalaṁ mahat
Seeing that powerful monkey thus fallen senseless, Kusha pierced that whole vast army with sharp arrows.
Verse 22 (padma.5.64.22)
tasya bāṇāyutairbhagnaṁ balaṁ sarvaṁ raṇāṁgaṇe palāyanaparaṁ jātaṁ caturaṁgasamanvitam
By his ten thousand arrows that whole army of four divisions was broken upon that battlefield, and turned to flight.
Verse 23 (padma.5.64.23)
tadā kapipatiḥ kopātsugrīvo rakṣako mahān abhyadhāvannagānnaikānutpāṭya kuśamudbhaṭam
Then Sugriva, that great guardian, lord of monkeys, in fury tore up many mountains and rushed toward defiant Kusha.
Verse 24 (padma.5.64.24)
kuśaḥ sarvānpraciccheda līlayā prahasannagān punarapyāgatānvṛkṣāṁściccheda tarasā balī
Kusha, laughing in mere play, cut down every one of those mountains; and whatever trees came at him after, that mighty one swiftly cut down as well.
Verse 25 (padma.5.64.25)
anekabāṇavyathitaḥ sugrīvaḥ samarāṁgaṇe jagrāha parvataṁ ghoraṁ kuśamastakamadhyataḥ
Afflicted by countless arrows upon that battlefield, Sugriva seized a terrible mountain, taking aim at Kusha's very head.
Verse 26 (padma.5.64.26)
kuśastaṁ nagamāyāṁtaṁ vīkṣya bāṇairanekadhā niṣpipeṣa cakārāśu mahārudrāṁgayogyatām
Seeing that mountain coming, Kusha, with many arrows, swiftly pulverized it, leaving it fit for nothing more than the ash upon great Rudra's own body.
Verse 27 (padma.5.64.27)
sugrīvastanmahatkarma dṛṣṭvā bālena nirmitam jayāśāpratinirvṛtto babhūva samarāṁgaṇe
Sugriva, seeing that great feat wrought by the mere boy, turned away there upon that battlefield from every hope of victory.
Verse 28 (padma.5.64.28)
raṇamadhye durākrāṁtaṁ kuśaṁ lāṁgūlatāḍakam atyamarṣīruṣākrāṁtastaṁ haṁtuṁ nagamādade
Seeing Kusha unconquerable in the midst of that battle, proof even against blows of the tail, seized by an unbearable fury, he took up a mountain still to slay him.
Verse 29 (padma.5.64.29)
ātmānaṁ haṁtumudyuktaṁ vīkṣya sugrīvamādarāt tāḍayāmāsa bahubhiḥ sāyakaiḥ śitaparvabhiḥ
Seeing Sugriva so intent upon slaying him, Kusha, out of respect for him, struck him nonetheless with many sharp, well-jointed arrows.
Verse 30 (padma.5.64.30)
sa tāḍito bahuvidhaiḥ śaraiḥ pīḍāsamanvitaḥ kuśaṁ haṁtuṁ samārabdho yayau śālaṁ samādade
Struck by those arrows of every kind, in pain though he was, he still set out to slay Kusha, and took up a Sala tree once more.
Verse 31 (padma.5.64.31)
tadāpi ca kuśo vīro vāruṇāstraṁ samādade babaṁdha taṁ ca pāśena dṛḍhena sa lavāgrajaḥ
Then Kusha, that hero, raised the Varuna missile against him too, and Lava's elder brother bound him fast with a strong noose.
Verse 32 (padma.5.64.32)
sa baddhaḥ pāśakaiḥ snigdhaiḥ kuśena balaśālinā papāta raṇamadhye vai mahāvīrairalaṁkṛte
Bound by mighty Kusha in those firm fetters, he fell in the midst of that battle, adorned as it was with such great heroes.
Verse 33 (padma.5.64.33)
sugrīvaṁ patitaṁ dṛṣṭvā vīrāḥ sarvatra dudruvuḥ jayamāpa lavabhrātā mahāvīraśiromaṇiḥ
Seeing Sugriva fallen, the heroes fled on every side; and Lava's brother, that crest-jewel of great heroes, won the victory.
Verse 34 (padma.5.64.34)
tāvallavo bhaṭāñjitvā puṣkalaṁ cāṁgadaṁ tathā pratāpāgryaṁ vīramaṇiṁ tathānyānapi bhūbhujaḥ
Meanwhile Lava had conquered a host of warriors — Pushkala and Angada, Pratapagrya, Viramani, and other kings besides —
Verse 35 (padma.5.64.35)
jayaṁ prāpya raṇe vīro lavo bhrātaramāgamat saṁgrāme jayakartāraṁ vairikoṭinipātakam
— and, having won victory in that battle, that hero came now to his own brother, who had likewise triumphed, felling millions of foes.
Verse 36 (padma.5.64.36)
parasparaṁ prahṛṣitau pariraṁbhaṁ prakurvataḥ jayaṁ prāptau tadā vārtāṁ mune cakraturunmadau
Delighted together, embracing one another, victorious both, O sage, they then spoke to one another, brimming with exuberant joy.
Verse 37 (padma.5.64.37)
lava uvāca bhrātastava prasādena nistīrṇo raṇatoyadhiḥ idānīṁ vīraraṇakaṁ śodhayāvaḥ suśobhitam
Lava said: "Brother, by your grace I have crossed this ocean of battle; now come, let us clear this splendid field of every last hero."
Verse 38 (padma.5.64.38)
ityuktvā tvaritaṁ vīro jagmatustau kuśīlavau rājño maulimaṇiṁ citraṁ jagrāha kanakācitam
Having spoken thus, those two heroes, Kusha and Lava, went swiftly, and took the king's own wondrous, gold-set crest-jewel.
Verse 39 (padma.5.64.39)
puṣkalasya lavo vīro jagrāha mukuṭaṁ śubham aṁgade ca mahānarghye śatrughnasyāparasya ca
The hero Lava took Pushkala's own auspicious crown, and the priceless armlets of Angada and of the other, Shatrughna —
Verse 40 (padma.5.64.40)
gṛhītvā śastrasaṁghātaṁ hanūmaṁtaṁ kapīśvaram sugrīvaṁ savidhe gatvā ubhāvapi babaṁdhatuḥ
— and, taking up the whole array of weapons, going to the side of Hanuman, lord of monkeys, and of Sugriva, they bound both of them fast.
Verse 41 (padma.5.64.41)
pucche vāyusutasyāyaṁ gṛhītvā tu kuśānujaḥ bhrātaraṁ pratyuvācedaṁ neṣyāmi svakamaṁdiram
Kusha's younger brother, seizing the tail of the son of the wind, said this to his brother: "I shall take him to our own dwelling —"
Verse 42 (padma.5.64.42)
āvayorjananī prītyai gṛhītvā pucchake tvaham krīḍārthamṛṣiputrāṇāṁ kautukārthaṁ mamaiva ca
"— for our mother's own delight, holding him by the tail; for the sport of the sages' sons, and for my own curiosity too."
Verse 43 (padma.5.64.43)
etacchrutvā tato vākyamuvāca ca kuśo lavam ahamenaṁ grahīṣyāmi vānaraṁ balinaṁ dṛḍham
Hearing this, Kusha then said this word to Lava: "I myself shall take this powerful, resolute monkey."
Verse 44 (padma.5.64.44)
ityevaṁ bhāṣamāṇau tau baddhvā tau balināṁ varau pucchayorbalinau dhṛtvā jagmatuḥ svāśramaṁ prati
Speaking thus, those two finest among the mighty, having bound the two monkeys, holding both of those powerful ones by the tail, set out toward their own hermitage.
Verse 45 (padma.5.64.45)
svāśramāya pragacchaṁtau vīkṣya tau kapisattamau kaṁpamānau jagadaturanyonyaṁ bhītayā girā
Seeing themselves, those two finest of monkeys, thus carried toward the hermitage, trembling, they said to one another in fearful voices —
Verse 46 (padma.5.64.46)
hanūmānkapirājānaṁ pratyuvāca bhayārdradhīḥ etau rāmasutāvasmānneṣyataḥ svāśramaṁ prati
Hanuman, his mind sodden with fear, said to the king of monkeys: "These two, sons of Rama, are carrying us off toward their own hermitage."
Verse 47 (padma.5.64.47)
mayā pūrvaṁ kṛtaṁ karma jānakīṁ pratigacchatā tatra me jānakī devī saṁmukhābhūnmanoharā
"Once before, when I went in search of Janaki, carrying out that very mission, the goddess Janaki, so lovely, came before me there —"
Verse 48 (padma.5.64.48)
sā māṁ drakṣyati vaidehī baddhaṁ pāśena vairiṇā tadā hasiṣyati varā trapā me'tra bhaviṣyati
"— and now that same Vaidehi will see me bound in an enemy's fetters; that finest of women will laugh, and I shall know shame before her here."
Verse 49 (padma.5.64.49)
mayā kimatra kartavyaṁ prāṇatyāgo bhaviṣyati mahadduḥkhaṁ cāpatitaṁ sa rāmaḥ kiṁ kariṣyati
"What am I to do here? Only the giving up of my life remains; this is a great sorrow that has fallen upon me — what will Rama do now?"
Verse 50 (padma.5.64.50)
sugrīvastadvacaḥ śrutvā mamāpyevaṁ mahākape neṣyate yadi māmevaṁ nidhanaṁ tu bhaviṣyati
Hearing his word, Sugriva said: "It is the same for me too, great monkey; if I am carried off in just this way, then death alone awaits me as well."
Verse 51 (padma.5.64.51)
evaṁ kathayatoreva hyanyonyaṁ bhayabhītayoḥ kuśo lavaśca bhavanaṁ mātuḥ prāpaturojasā
As they spoke thus to one another, both filled with fear, Kusha and Lava, with all their vigor, reached their mother's own dwelling.
Verse 52 (padma.5.64.52)
tāvāyātau samīkṣyaiva jaharṣa jananī tayoḥ anyonyaṁ paramaprītyā parirebhe nijau sutau
Seeing them arrived, their mother rejoiced; with the greatest love she embraced her own two sons, each in turn.
Verse 53 (padma.5.64.53)
tābhyāṁ pucchagṛhītau tau vānarau vīkṣya jānakī hanūmaṁtaṁ ca sugrīvaṁ sarvavīraṁ kapīśvaram
Seeing those two monkeys held by the tail by her own sons — Hanuman, and Sugriva, foremost lord of all the monkeys — Janaki —
Verse 54 (padma.5.64.54)
jahāsa pāśabaddhau tau vīkṣamāṇā varāṁganā uvāca ca vimokṣārthaṁ vadaṁtī vacanaṁ varam
— that excellent woman, seeing them thus bound in their fetters, laughed, and, for the sake of their release, spoke this fine word —
Verse 55 (padma.5.64.55)
putrau pramuṁcataṁ kīśau mahāvīrau mahābalau īkṣaṁtau māṁ yadi sphītau prāṇatyāgaṁ kariṣyataḥ
"Release these monkeys, my sons — both are great heroes, and mighty; if these two, so eminent, go on watching me like this, they will surely give up their very lives."
Verse 56 (padma.5.64.56)
ayaṁ vai hanumānvīro yo dadāha danoḥ purīm ayamapyṛkṣarājo hi sarvavānarabhūmipaḥ
"This here is the hero Hanuman, who once burned that demon city to the ground; and this one is the king of bears — no, the very lord of the earth among all monkeys."
Verse 57 (padma.5.64.57)
kimarthaṁ vidhṛtau kutra kiṁ vā kṛtamanādarāt pucche yuvābhyāṁ vidhṛtau sa mahānvismayo'sti me
"Why, and where, have you held them thus? Or what have you done to them out of disrespect? That the two of you should hold them by the tail is a great wonder to me."
Verse 58 (padma.5.64.58)
iti māturvacaḥ ślakṣṇaṁ vīkṣyatāṁ putrakau tadā ūcaturvinayaśreṣṭhau mahābalasamanvitau
Hearing this gentle word of their mother, those two sons, endowed with the greatest strength, foremost in courtesy, replied —
Verse 59 (padma.5.64.59)
mātaḥ kaścana bhūpālo rāmo dāśarathirbalī tena mukto hayaḥ svarṇabhālapatraḥ suśobhitaḥ
"Mother, a certain king, mighty Rama, son of Dasharatha — he it was who released this horse, bearing a golden plate upon its forehead, most lovely."
Verse 60 (padma.5.64.60)
tatraivaṁ likhitaṁ mātarekavīrāprasūrmama ye kṣatriyāste gṛhṇantu nocetpādatalārcakāḥ
