The Sages Reborn as Gopis
Verse 1 (padma.5.72.1)
ईश्वर उवाच-। तदेकाग्रमना भूत्वा शृणु देवि वरानने । आसीदुग्रतपा नाम मुनिरेको दृढव्रतः
īśvara uvāca- tadekāgramanā bhūtvā śṛṇu devi varānane āsīdugratapā nāma munireko dṛḍhavrataḥ
Ishvara said: "Being one-pointed in mind, listen, O goddess of the fair face. There was once a sage named Ugratapa, firm in his vow."
Verse 2 (padma.5.72.2)
साग्निको ह्यग्निभक्षश्च चचारात्यद्भुतं तपः । जजाप परमं जाप्यं मंत्रं पंचदशाक्षरम्
sāgniko hyagnibhakṣaśca cacārātyadbhutaṁ tapaḥ jajāpa paramaṁ jāpyaṁ maṁtraṁ paṁcadaśākṣaram
"Keeper of the sacred fire, eating only fire, he performed the most wondrous austerity; he recited the supreme mantra of fifteen syllables."
Verse 3 (padma.5.72.3)
काममंत्रेण पुटितं कामं कामवरप्रदात् । कृष्णायेति पदं स्वाहा सहितं सिद्धिदं परम्
kāmamaṁtreṇa puṭitaṁ kāmaṁ kāmavarapradāt kṛṣṇāyeti padaṁ svāhā sahitaṁ siddhidaṁ param
"Wrapped within the Kama-mantra, the bestower of the boon of desire — the word 'Krishnaya' joined with 'svaha', the supreme bestower of accomplishment."
Verse 4 (padma.5.72.4)
दध्यौ च श्यामलं कृष्णं रासोन्मत्तं वरोत्सुकम् । पीतपट्टधरं वेणुं करेणाधरमर्पितम्
dadhyau ca śyāmalaṁ kṛṣṇaṁ rāsonmattaṁ varotsukam pītapaṭṭadharaṁ veṇuṁ kareṇādharamarpitam
"He meditated upon the dark Shyama Krishna, maddened with the rasa dance, eager for his beloved, clad in yellow silk, holding the flute set upon his lower lip,"
Verse 5 (padma.5.72.5)
नवयौवनसंपन्नं कर्षंतं पाणिना प्रियाम् । एवं ध्यानपरः कल्पशतांते देहमुत्सृजन्
navayauvanasaṁpannaṁ karṣaṁtaṁ pāṇinā priyām evaṁ dhyānaparaḥ kalpaśatāṁte dehamutsṛjan
"endowed with fresh youth, drawing his beloved close with his hand. Thus absorbed in meditation, at the end of a hundred kalpas, casting off his body,"
Verse 6 (padma.5.72.6)
सुनंद नाम गोपस्य कन्याभूत्स महामुनिः । सुनंदेति समाख्याता या वीणां बिभ्रती करे
sunaṁda nāma gopasya kanyābhūtsa mahāmuniḥ sunaṁdeti samākhyātā yā vīṇāṁ bibhratī kare
"that great sage became the daughter of a cowherd named Sunanda; she is known by the name Sunanda, who bears a vina in her hand."
Verse 7 (padma.5.72.7)
मुनिरन्यः सत्यतपा इति ख्यातो महाव्रतः । सशुष्कपत्रं भुंक्ते यः प्रजजाप परं मनुम्
muniranyaḥ satyatapā iti khyāto mahāvrataḥ saśuṣkapatraṁ bhuṁkte yaḥ prajajāpa paraṁ manum
"Another sage, known by the name Satyatapa, of a great vow, who ate only dried leaves, recited a supreme mantra —"

रत्यंतं कामबीजेन पुटितं च दशाक्षरम् । स प्रदध्यौ मुनिवरश्चित्रवेषधरं हरिम्
ratyaṁtaṁ kāmabījena puṭitaṁ ca daśākṣaram sa pradadhyau munivaraścitraveṣadharaṁ harim
"joined with the Rati-bija and the Kama-bija, the ten-syllabled mantra; that excellent sage meditated upon Hari in a wondrous guise,"
Verse 9 (padma.5.72.9)
धृत्वा रमाया दोर्वल्लीद्वितयं कंकणोज्ज्वलम् । नृत्यंतमुन्मदंतं च संश्लिष्यं तं मुहुर्मुहुः
dhṛtvā ramāyā dorvallīdvitayaṁ kaṁkaṇojjvalam nṛtyaṁtamunmadaṁtaṁ ca saṁśliṣyaṁ taṁ muhurmuhuḥ
"holding both his beloved's creeper-like arms, bright with bangles, dancing and intoxicated, embracing her again and again,"
Verse 10 (padma.5.72.10)
हसंतमुच्चैरानंदतरंगं जठरांबरे । दधतं वेणुमाजानु वैजयंत्या विराजितम्
hasaṁtamuccairānaṁdataraṁgaṁ jaṭharāṁbare dadhataṁ veṇumājānu vaijayaṁtyā virājitam
"laughing loudly, waves of bliss overflowing, holding the flute up to his knee, resplendent with the vaijayanti garland,"
Verse 11 (padma.5.72.11)
स्वेदांभः कणसंसिक्त ललाटवलिताननम् । त्यक्त्वा त्यक्त्वा स वै देहं तपसा च महामुनिः
svedāṁbhaḥ kaṇasaṁsikta lalāṭavalitānanam tyaktvā tyaktvā sa vai dehaṁ tapasā ca mahāmuniḥ
"his face moist with beads of sweat. Casting off body after body through such austerity, that great sage,"
Verse 12 (padma.5.72.12)
दशकल्पांतरे जातो ह्ययं नंदवनादिह । सुभद्र नाम्नो गोपस्य कन्या भद्रेति विश्रुता
daśakalpāṁtare jāto hyayaṁ naṁdavanādiha subhadra nāmno gopasya kanyā bhadreti viśrutā
"after ten kalpas, was born here in Nanda-vana; the daughter of a cowherd named Subhadra, renowned as Bhadra —"
Verse 13 (padma.5.72.13)
यस्याः पृष्ठतले दिव्यं व्यजनं परिदृश्यते । हरिधामाभिधानस्तु कश्चिदासीन्महामुनिः
yasyāḥ pṛṣṭhatale divyaṁ vyajanaṁ paridṛśyate haridhāmābhidhānastu kaścidāsīnmahāmuniḥ
"on whose back a divine fan is seen. There was once a great sage named Haridhama."
Verse 14 (padma.5.72.14)
सोऽप्यतप्यत्तपः कृच्छ्रं नित्यं पत्रैकभोजनम् । आशुसिद्धिकरं मंत्रं विंशत्यर्णं प्रजप्तवान्
so'pyatapyattapaḥ kṛcchraṁ nityaṁ patraikabhojanam āśusiddhikaraṁ maṁtraṁ viṁśatyarṇaṁ prajaptavān
"He too practiced severe austerity, eating only a single leaf daily; he recited the mantra of twenty syllables that grants swift accomplishment."
Verse 15 (padma.5.72.15)
अनंतरं कामबीजादध्यारूढं तदेव तु । माया तत्पुरतो व्योम हंसासृग्द्युतिचंद्रकम्
anaṁtaraṁ kāmabījādadhyārūḍhaṁ tadeva tu māyā tatpurato vyoma haṁsāsṛgdyuticaṁdrakam
"Thereafter, mounted upon the Kama-bija, before him in the sky appeared a radiant vision, bright as a swan's hue, marked with the moon,"
Verse 16 (padma.5.72.16)
ततो दशाक्षरं पश्चान्नमोयुक्तं स्मरादिकम् । दध्यौ वृंदावने रम्ये माधवीमंडपे प्रभुम्
tato daśākṣaraṁ paścānnamoyuktaṁ smarādikam dadhyau vṛṁdāvane ramye mādhavīmaṁḍape prabhum
"then the ten-syllabled mantra, joined afterward with 'namah', beginning with Smara; he meditated in delightful Vrindavana, in the Madhavi bower, upon the Lord,"

उत्तानशायिनं चारुपल्लवास्तरणोपरि । कयाचिदतिकामार्त्त बल्लव्या रक्तनेत्रया
uttānaśāyinaṁ cārupallavāstaraṇopari kayācidatikāmārtta ballavyā raktanetrayā
"lying stretched upon a bed of lovely tender leaves, being caressed by a certain cowherd maiden overcome with passion, her eyes reddened,"
Verse 18 (padma.5.72.18)
वक्षोजयुगमाच्छाद्य विपुलोरः स्थलं मुहुः । संचुंब्यमानगंडांतं तृप्यमानरदच्छदम्
vakṣojayugamācchādya vipuloraḥ sthalaṁ muhuḥ saṁcuṁbyamānagaṁḍāṁtaṁ tṛpyamānaradacchadam
"covering his broad chest with her own bosom repeatedly, kissing his cheeks, satisfying his lips,"

कलयंतं प्रियां दोर्भ्यां सहासं समुदाद्भुतम् । स मुनिश्च बहून्देहां स्त्यक्त्वा कल्पत्रयांतरे
kalayaṁtaṁ priyāṁ dorbhyāṁ sahāsaṁ samudādbhutam sa muniśca bahūndehāṁ styaktvā kalpatrayāṁtare
"drawing his beloved close with both arms, laughing together in great wonder. That sage too, casting off many bodies over three kalpas,"
Verse 20 (padma.5.72.20)
सारंगनाम्नो गोपस्य कन्याभूच्छुभलक्षणा । रंगवेणीति विख्याता निपुणा चित्रकर्मणि
sāraṁganāmno gopasya kanyābhūcchubhalakṣaṇā raṁgaveṇīti vikhyātā nipuṇā citrakarmaṇi
"became the daughter of a cowherd named Saranga, of auspicious marks; she is known as Rangaveni, skilled in the art of painting,"
Verse 21 (padma.5.72.21)
यस्या दंतेषु दृश्यंते चित्रिताः शोणबिंदवः । ब्रह्मवादी मुनिः कश्चिज्जाबालिरिति विश्रुतः
yasyā daṁteṣu dṛśyaṁte citritāḥ śoṇabiṁdavaḥ brahmavādī muniḥ kaścijjābāliriti viśrutaḥ
"on whose teeth are seen painted red dots. There was a certain sage, a knower of Brahman, known as Jabali,"
Verse 22 (padma.5.72.22)
सतपः सुरतो योगी विचरन्पृथिवीमिमाम् । स एकस्मिन्महारण्ये योजनायुतविस्तृते
satapaḥ surato yogī vicaranpṛthivīmimām sa ekasminmahāraṇye yojanāyutavistṛte
"devoted to austerity and yoga, wandering over this earth. In one great forest, extending ten thousand yojanas,"
Verse 23 (padma.5.72.23)
यदृच्छयागतोऽपश्यदेकां वापीं सुशोभनाम् । सर्वतः स्फाटिकाबंधतटां स्वादुजलान्विताम्
yadṛcchayāgato'paśyadekāṁ vāpīṁ suśobhanām sarvataḥ sphāṭikābaṁdhataṭāṁ svādujalānvitām
"having come there by chance, he saw a single, most beautiful pool, its banks bound with crystal on every side, filled with sweet water,"
Verse 24 (padma.5.72.24)
विकासिकमलामोदवायुना परिशीलिताम् । तस्याः पश्चिमदिग्भागे मूले वटमहीरुहः
vikāsikamalāmodavāyunā pariśīlitām tasyāḥ paścimadigbhāge mūle vaṭamahīruhaḥ
"caressed by the breeze bearing the fragrance of blooming lotuses. On its western side, at the root of a banyan tree,"
Verse 25 (padma.5.72.25)
अपश्यत्तापसीं कांचित्कुर्वंतीं दारुणं तपः । तारुण्यवयसायुक्तां रूपेणाति मनोहराम्
apaśyattāpasīṁ kāṁcitkurvaṁtīṁ dāruṇaṁ tapaḥ tāruṇyavayasāyuktāṁ rūpeṇāti manoharām
"he saw a certain female ascetic performing severe austerity, endowed with the age of youth, exceedingly beautiful in form,"
Verse 26 (padma.5.72.26)
चंद्रांशुं सदृशाभासां सर्वावयवशोभनाम् । कृत्वा कटितटे वामपाणिं दक्षिणतस्तदा
caṁdrāṁśuṁ sadṛśābhāsāṁ sarvāvayavaśobhanām kṛtvā kaṭitaṭe vāmapāṇiṁ dakṣiṇatastadā
"her radiance like that of the moon's rays, every limb lovely; her left hand placed upon her hip, and with the right —"
Verse 27 (padma.5.72.27)
ज्ञानमुद्रां च बिभ्राणामनिमेषविलोचनाम् । त्यक्ताहारविहारां च सुनिश्चलतयास्थिताम्
jñānamudrāṁ ca bibhrāṇāmanimeṣavilocanām tyaktāhāravihārāṁ ca suniścalatayāsthitām
"holding the gesture of knowledge, her eyes unblinking, having abandoned food and diversion, standing perfectly motionless."
Verse 28 (padma.5.72.28)
जिज्ञासुस्तां मुनिवरस्तस्थौ तत्र शतं समाः । तदंते तां समुत्थाप्य चलितां विनयान्मुनिः
jijñāsustāṁ munivarastasthau tatra śataṁ samāḥ tadaṁte tāṁ samutthāpya calitāṁ vinayānmuniḥ
"Curious, that excellent sage remained there for a hundred years. At the end of that time, as she stirred, having roused her, the sage,"
Verse 29 (padma.5.72.29)
अपृच्छत्का त्वमाश्चर्यरूपे किं वा चरिष्यसि । यदि योग्यं भवेत्तर्हि कृपया वक्तुमर्हसि
apṛcchatkā tvamāścaryarūpe kiṁ vā cariṣyasi yadi yogyaṁ bhavettarhi kṛpayā vaktumarhasi
"humbly asked: 'Who are you, of wondrous form? What do you practice? If it is fitting, kindly tell me out of grace.'"
Verse 30 (padma.5.72.30)
अथाब्रवीच्छनैर्बाला तपसातीव कर्शिता । ब्रह्मविद्याहमतुला योगींद्रैर्या विमृग्यते
athābravīcchanairbālā tapasātīva karśitā brahmavidyāhamatulā yogīṁdrairyā vimṛgyate
"Then, slowly, that maiden, exceedingly emaciated by austerity, said: 'I am matchless Brahma-vidya, sought after by the lords of yoga.'"
Verse 31 (padma.5.72.31)
साहं हरिपदाम्भोजकाम्यया सुचिरं तपः । चराम्यस्मिन्वने घोरे ध्यायंती पुरुषोत्तमम्
sāhaṁ haripadāmbhojakāmyayā suciraṁ tapaḥ carāmyasminvane ghore dhyāyaṁtī puruṣottamam
"'I, out of longing for Hari's lotus feet, practice long austerity in this terrible forest, meditating upon the Supreme Person.'"
Verse 32 (padma.5.72.32)
ब्रह्मानंदेन पूर्णाहं तेनानंदेन तृप्तधीः । तथापि शून्यमात्मानं मन्ये कृष्णरतिं विना
brahmānaṁdena pūrṇāhaṁ tenānaṁdena tṛptadhīḥ tathāpi śūnyamātmānaṁ manye kṛṣṇaratiṁ vinā
"'I am full of the bliss of Brahman, my mind satisfied by that bliss; yet even so, I consider myself empty without devotion to Krishna.'"
Verse 33 (padma.5.72.33)
इदानीमतिनिर्विण्णा देहस्यास्य विसर्ज्जनम् । कर्त्तुमिच्छामि पुण्यायां वापिकायामिहैव तु
idānīmatinirviṇṇā dehasyāsya visarjjanam karttumicchāmi puṇyāyāṁ vāpikāyāmihaiva tu
"'Now, exceedingly weary, I wish to give up this body right here, in this sacred pool.'"
Verse 34 (padma.5.72.34)
तच्छ्रुत्वा वचनं तस्या मुनिरत्यंतविस्मितः । पतित्वा चरणे तस्याः कृष्णोपासाविधिं शुभम्
tacchrutvā vacanaṁ tasyā muniratyaṁtavismitaḥ patitvā caraṇe tasyāḥ kṛṣṇopāsāvidhiṁ śubham
"Hearing her words, the sage, utterly astonished, fell at her feet and, having abandoned his own prior spiritual path,"

पप्रच्छ परमप्रीतस्त्यक्त्वाध्यात्मविरोचनम् । तयोक्तं मंत्रमाज्ञाय जगाम मानसं सरः
papraccha paramaprītastyaktvādhyātmavirocanam tayoktaṁ maṁtramājñāya jagāma mānasaṁ saraḥ
"asked her, filled with the highest love, about the auspicious method of worship of Krishna. Having learned the mantra she taught, he went to Lake Manasa."

ततोऽतिदुश्चरं चक्रे तपो विस्मयकारकम् । एकपादस्थितः सूर्यं निर्निमेषं विलोकयन्
tato'tiduścaraṁ cakre tapo vismayakārakam ekapādasthitaḥ sūryaṁ nirnimeṣaṁ vilokayan
"There he performed an exceedingly difficult austerity, astonishing to behold — standing on one foot, gazing unblinking at the sun,"

मंत्रं जजाप परमं पंचविंशतिवर्णकम् । दध्यौ परमभावेन कृष्णमानंदरूपिणम्
maṁtraṁ jajāpa paramaṁ paṁcaviṁśativarṇakam dadhyau paramabhāvena kṛṣṇamānaṁdarūpiṇam
"he recited the supreme mantra of twenty-five syllables. He meditated with the highest devotion upon Krishna, of the very form of bliss,"

चरंतं व्रजवीथीषु विचित्रगतिलीलया । ललितैः पादविन्यासैः क्वणयंतं च नूपुरम्
caraṁtaṁ vrajavīthīṣu vicitragatilīlayā lalitaiḥ pādavinyāsaiḥ kvaṇayaṁtaṁ ca nūpuram
"wandering the lanes of Vraja with wondrously varied gait, his anklets tinkling with graceful steps,"

चित्रकंदर्पचेष्टाभिः सस्मितापांगवीक्षितैः । संमोहनाख्यया वंश्या पंचमारुणचित्रया
citrakaṁdarpaceṣṭābhiḥ sasmitāpāṁgavīkṣitaiḥ saṁmohanākhyayā vaṁśyā paṁcamāruṇacitrayā
"with the wondrous gestures of Kama, with smiling sidelong glances, playing upon a flute called Sammohana, reddish and wondrous in its fifth note,"

बिंबौष्ठपुटचुंबिन्या कलालापैर्मनोज्ञया । हरंतं व्रजरामाणां मनांसि च वपूंषि च
biṁbauṣṭhapuṭacuṁbinyā kalālāpairmanojñayā haraṁtaṁ vrajarāmāṇāṁ manāṁsi ca vapūṁṣi ca
"kissed by the bimba-fruit-red bud of his lips, delightful with its soft murmurs, stealing the hearts and bodies of the women of Vraja,"
Verse 41 (padma.5.72.41)
श्लथन्नीवीभिरागत्य सहसालिंगितांगकम् । दिव्यमाल्यांबरधरं दिव्यगंधानुलेपनम्
ślathannīvībhirāgatya sahasāliṁgitāṁgakam divyamālyāṁbaradharaṁ divyagaṁdhānulepanam
"their girdles loosening as they came and suddenly embraced his limbs, he wearing divine garlands and garments, anointed with divine fragrance,"

श्यामलांगप्रभापूर्णैर्मोहयंतं जगत्त्रयम् । स एवं बहुदेवेन समुपास्य जगत्पतिम्
śyāmalāṁgaprabhāpūrṇairmohayaṁtaṁ jagattrayam sa evaṁ bahudevena samupāsya jagatpatim
"bewitching the three worlds with the fullness of the radiance of his dark limbs. Having thus worshipped the lord of the universe with many forms of devotion,"
Verse 43 (padma.5.72.43)
नवकल्पांतरे जाता गोकुले दिव्यरूपिणी । कन्या प्रचंडनाम्नस्तु गोपस्याति यशस्विनः
navakalpāṁtare jātā gokule divyarūpiṇī kanyā pracaṁḍanāmnastu gopasyāti yaśasvinaḥ
"after nine kalpas he was born in Gokula, of divine form, the daughter of an exceedingly renowned cowherd named Prachanda,"

चित्रगंधेति विख्याता कुमारी च शुभानना । निजांगगंधैर्विविधैर्मोदयंती दिशो दश
citragaṁdheti vikhyātā kumārī ca śubhānanā nijāṁgagaṁdhairvividhairmodayaṁtī diśo daśa
"known as Chitragandha, a maiden of beautiful face, delighting the ten directions with the manifold fragrances of her own limbs."
Verse 45 (padma.5.72.45)
तामेनां पश्य कल्याणीं वृंदशो मधुपायिनीम् । अंगेषु स्वपतिं कृत्वा रसावेशसमाकुलाम्
tāmenāṁ paśya kalyāṇīṁ vṛṁdaśo madhupāyinīm aṁgeṣu svapatiṁ kṛtvā rasāveśasamākulām
"Behold this auspicious one, drawing throngs of honey-drinking bees to settle upon her own limbs, overwhelmed with the rush of sweetness —"
Verse 46 (padma.5.72.46)
अस्याः स्तनपरिष्वंगे हारैः सर्वैर्विहन्यते । वक्षःस्थलात्प्रच्यवद्भिश्चित्रगंधादिसौरभैः
asyāḥ stanapariṣvaṁge hāraiḥ sarvairvihanyate vakṣaḥsthalātpracyavadbhiścitragaṁdhādisaurabhaiḥ
"in the embrace of her breasts, all garlands are struck aside, falling from her bosom, by the various fragrances that spread from it."

अपरे मुनिवर्यास्तु सततं पूतमानसाः । वायुभक्षास्तपस्तेपुर्जपंतः परमं मनुम्
apare munivaryāstu satataṁ pūtamānasāḥ vāyubhakṣāstapastepurjapaṁtaḥ paramaṁ manum
"Other excellent sages, ever of purified mind, ate only air and performed austerity, reciting the supreme mantra,"

स्मरः कृष्णाय कामार्ति कलादिवृत्तिशालिने । आग्नेयीसहितं कृत्वा मंत्रं पंचदशाक्षरम्
smaraḥ kṛṣṇāya kāmārti kalādivṛttiśāline āgneyīsahitaṁ kṛtvā maṁtraṁ paṁcadaśākṣaram
"the Kama-bija joined with 'Krishnaya', afflicted with love, endowed with the movements of the arts; joined with the Agneyi seed-syllable, the mantra of fifteen syllables,"

दध्युर्मुनिवराः कष्णमूर्तिं दिव्यविभूषणाम् । दिव्यचित्रदुकूलेन पूर्णपीनकटिस्थलाम्
dadhyurmunivarāḥ kaṣṇamūrtiṁ divyavibhūṣaṇām divyacitradukūlena pūrṇapīnakaṭisthalām
"those excellent sages meditated upon the form of Krishna, divinely adorned, in divine, wondrous silk, her hips full and rounded,"

मयूरपिच्छकैः कॢप्तचूडामुज्ज्वलकुंडलाम् । सव्यजंघांत आदाय दक्षिणं चरणांबुजम्
mayūrapicchakaiḥ kḷptacūḍāmujjvalakuṁḍalām savyajaṁghāṁta ādāya dakṣiṇaṁ caraṇāṁbujam
"her crest fashioned of peacock feathers, her earrings bright, one lotus-foot resting lightly upon the left shin,"

भ्रमंतीं संपुटीकृत्य चारुहस्तांबुजद्वयम् । कक्षदेशविनिक्षिप्तवेणुं परिचलत्पुटीम्
bhramaṁtīṁ saṁpuṭīkṛtya cāruhastāṁbujadvayam kakṣadeśavinikṣiptaveṇuṁ paricalatpuṭīm
"wandering, her two lovely lotus hands joined together, the flute tucked at her waist, her sash swaying,"

आनंदयंतीं गोपीनां नयनानि मनांसि च । परमाश्चर्यरूपेण प्रविष्टां रंगमंडपे
ānaṁdayaṁtīṁ gopīnāṁ nayanāni manāṁsi ca paramāścaryarūpeṇa praviṣṭāṁ raṁgamaṁḍape
"delighting the eyes and hearts of the gopis, entering the dance-pavilion in a form of supreme wonder,"

"in whose ears are seen earrings lit with radiance, jeweled garlands on their necks, jeweled flowers in their braids."

"There was a sage named Shuchishrava, and another named Suvarna — the two sons of the Brahmarshi Kushadhvaja, both accomplished in the Vedas,"

"meditating upon Krishna in Gokula as a ten-year-old boy, in a form like Kama's own, graceful with the charm of youth,"

पश्यंतीर्व्रजबिंबोष्ठीर्मोहयंतमनारतम् । तौ कल्पांते तनूं त्यक्त्वा लब्धवंतौ जनिं व्रजे

"gazing at the bimba-lipped women of Vraja, bewitching them ceaselessly. Those two, at the end of that kalpa, casting off their bodies, obtained birth in Vraja,"

सुवीरनाम गोपस्य सुते परमशोभने । ययोर्हस्ते प्रदृश्येते सारिके शुभराविणी

"as the daughters, exceedingly lovely, of a cowherd named Suvira — in whose hands are seen a pair of sweetly-crying mynah birds."

जटिलो जंघपूतश्च घृताशी कर्बुरेव च । चत्वारो मुनयो धन्या इहामुत्र च निःस्पृहाः
jaṭilo jaṁghapūtaśca ghṛtāśī karbureva ca catvāro munayo dhanyā ihāmutra ca niḥspṛhāḥ
"Jatila, Janghaputa, Ghritashi, and Karbura — these four sages, blessed both here and hereafter, free from all desire,"

भ्रमंतं नृत्यगीताद्यैर्मानयंतं मनोहरम् । चंदनालिप्तसर्वांगं जपापुष्पावतंसकम्

"upon him wandering there, honored with dance and song, enchanting, his whole body anointed with sandal, adorned with a crest of japa flowers,"

"garlanded with kalhara, clad in blue and yellow silk. After three kalpas they were born in Gokula, of auspicious marks."

इमास्ताः पुरतो रम्या उपविष्टा नतभ्रुवः । यासां धर्मकृतान्येव वलयानि प्रकोष्ठके
imāstāḥ purato ramyā upaviṣṭā natabhruvaḥ yāsāṁ dharmakṛtānyeva valayāni prakoṣṭhake
"These sit before us now, lovely, with bowed brows — on whose wrists are bangles earned through righteous deeds,"

"wondrous with jewels and the like, set with divine pearls. There was a sage named Dirghatapa, who was Vyasa in a previous kalpa."

"His son was the sage known by the name Shuka, excellent and wise. He too, as a boy of great intelligence, ever remembering that state,"

विहाय पितृमात्रादि कृष्णं ध्यात्वा वनं गतः । स तत्र मानसैर्दिव्यैरुपचारैरहर्निशम्

"abandoning father, mother and all, meditating on Krishna, went to the forest. There, with divine mental offerings, day and night,"

harṣāśrupūrṇaḥ pulakācitāṁgaḥ prasīdanātheti vadannathoccaiḥ daṁḍapraṇāmāya papāta bhūmau saṁvepamānastrijagadvidhātuḥ
"Filled with tears of joy, every limb bristling with rapture, crying aloud 'Be gracious, O Lord!' he fell to the ground to offer prostration, trembling before the maker of the three worlds."

तं भक्तिकामं पतितं धरण्यामायासितोस्मीति वदंतमुच्चैः । दंडप्रणामस्य भुजौ गृहीत्वा पस्पर्श हर्षोपचितेक्षणेन
taṁ bhaktikāmaṁ patitaṁ dharaṇyāmāyāsitosmīti vadaṁtamuccaiḥ daṁḍapraṇāmasya bhujau gṛhītvā pasparśa harṣopacitekṣaṇena
"Him, devoted and fallen upon the earth, crying aloud 'I am wearied,' as he made his prostration, He took him by both arms and touched him with eyes brimming with joy."

उवाच च प्रियारूपं लब्धवंतं शुकं हरिः । त्वं मे प्रियतमा भद्रे सदा तिष्ठ ममांतिके

"And Hari spoke to Shuka, who had attained a beloved's form: 'You are my dearest, O gentle one; remain ever near me,'"

मद्रूपं चिंतयंती च प्रेमास्पदमुपागता । द्वे च मुख्यतमे गोप्यौ समानवयसी शुभे

"'thinking always of my form.' And thus she attained the status of a beloved. And two chief gopis, of equal age, auspicious,"

एकव्रते एकनिष्ठे एकनक्षत्रनामनी । तप्तजांबूनदप्रख्या तत्रैवान्या तडित्प्रभा

"of one vow, one devotion, sharing one birth-star's name — one resembled molten gold, the other there was like lightning-radiance,"

एकानिद्रा यमाणाक्षी परा सौम्यायतेक्षणा । सोऽर्चयत्परया भक्त्या ते हरेः सव्यदक्षिणे
ekānidrā yamāṇākṣī parā saumyāyatekṣaṇā so'rcayatparayā bhaktyā te hareḥ savyadakṣiṇe
"one with sleepless, restrained eyes, the other of gentle, wide eyes. He worshipped them with supreme devotion, as if the right and left of Hari."

स कल्पांते तनुं त्यक्त्वा गोकुलेऽभून्महात्मनः । उपनंदस्य दुहिता नीलोत्पलदलच्छविः
sa kalpāṁte tanuṁ tyaktvā gokule'bhūnmahātmanaḥ upanaṁdasya duhitā nīlotpaladalacchaviḥ
"At the end of that kalpa, casting off his body, he was born in Gokula as the daughter of the great soul Upananda, of the hue of a blue-lotus petal."

सेयं श्रीकृष्णवनिता पीतशाटीपरिच्छदा । रक्तचोलिकया पूर्णा शातकुंभघटस्तनी

"She is this very beloved of Shri Krishna, clad in a yellow sari, wearing a red bodice filled out, her breasts like golden jars,"

दधाना रक्तसिंदूरं सर्वांगस्यावगुंठनम् । स्वर्णकुंडलविभ्राजद्गंडदेशां सुशोभनाम्

"wearing red vermilion, a veil over her whole body, her cheeks radiant with golden earrings, most lovely,"

स्वर्णपंकजमालाढ्या कुंकुमालिप्तसुस्तनी । यस्या हस्ते चर्वणीयं दृश्यते हरिणार्पितम्

"rich with a garland of golden lotuses, her fine breasts anointed with saffron — in whose hand is seen a betel-quid offered by Hari."

वेणुवाद्यातिनिपुणा केशवस्य निषेवणी । कृष्णेन परितुष्टेन कदाचिद्गीतकर्मणि
veṇuvādyātinipuṇā keśavasya niṣevaṇī kṛṣṇena parituṣṭena kadācidgītakarmaṇi
"Most skilled at playing the flute, devoted to the service of Keshava; once, when Krishna was well pleased with her singing,"

विन्यस्ता कंबुकंठेऽस्या भाति गुंजावलि शुभा । परोक्षेपि च कृष्णस्य कांतिभिश्च स्मरार्दिता

"placed upon her conch-like throat a beautiful string of gunja berries; even at a distance, afflicted by Krishna's beauty and love,"

सखीभिर्वादयंतीभिर्गायंती सुस्वरं परम् । नर्त्तयेत्प्रियवेषेण वेषयित्वा वधूमिमाम्
sakhībhirvādayaṁtībhirgāyaṁtī susvaraṁ param narttayetpriyaveṣeṇa veṣayitvā vadhūmimām
"with her friends playing music, singing in a supremely sweet voice, she dresses this maiden in her beloved's guise and makes her dance,"

वारंवारं च गोविंदं भावेनालिंग्य चुंबति । प्रियासौ सर्वगोपीनां कृष्णस्याप्यतिवल्लभा
vāraṁvāraṁ ca goviṁdaṁ bhāvenāliṁgya cuṁbati priyāsau sarvagopīnāṁ kṛṣṇasyāpyativallabhā
"and again and again, embracing Govinda with feeling, she kisses him. She is the beloved of all the gopis, and Krishna's own most cherished."

श्वेतकेतोः सुतः कश्चिद्वेदवेदांगपारगः । सर्वमेव परित्यज्य प्रचंडं तप आस्थितः

"A certain son of Shvetaketu, versed in the Vedas and Vedangas, having renounced everything, undertook fierce austerity,"

मुरारेः सेवितपदां सुधामधुरनादिनीम् । गोविंदस्य प्रियां शक्तिं ब्रह्मरुद्रादिदुर्गमाम्

"meditating upon her whose feet are served by Murari, whose voice is sweet as nectar, Govinda's beloved power, unfathomable even to Brahma and Rudra,"

"worshipping her, whose very nature is Shri herself, enchanting, with single-minded devotion, meditating, he ceaselessly recited the eleven-syllabled mantra,"

हसितं सकलं कृत्वा बतमायेषु योजयन् । कांत्यादिभिर्हसंतीभिर्वासयंत्यभितो जगत्

"making all laughter itself, joining it with wonders and illusions, with her radiance and the like, laughing, pervading the world on every side,"

वसंते वसतेत्येवं मंत्रार्थं चिंतयन्सदा । सोऽपि कल्पद्वयेनैव सिद्धोऽत्र जनिमाप्तवान्

"ever pondering the meaning of the mantra as 'She who dwells, she who dwells' — he too, accomplished after just two kalpas, attained birth here."

"This one now appears as a girl, slender-limbed, her breasts like buds, her throat gleaming with a string of pearls, clad in pure silk,"

मुक्ताच्छुरितमंजीरकंकणांगदमुद्रिका । बिभ्रती कुंडले दिव्ये अमृतस्राविणी शुभे
muktācchuritamaṁjīrakaṁkaṇāṁgadamudrikā bibhratī kuṁḍale divye amṛtasrāviṇī śubhe
"wearing anklets, bracelets, armlets, and rings studded with pearls, bearing divine, auspicious earrings that drip nectar,"

वृत्तकस्तूरिकावेणी मध्ये सिंदूरबिंदुवत् । दधाना चित्रकं भाले सार्द्धं चंदनचित्रकैः

"her braid round, marked with musk, bearing a dot of vermilion in its midst, a tilaka on her brow together with sandal-paste designs,"

या सैव दृश्यते शांता जपंती परमं पदम् । आसीच्चंद्रप्रभो नाम राजर्षिः प्रियदर्शनः
yā saiva dṛśyate śāṁtā japaṁtī paramaṁ padam āsīccaṁdraprabho nāma rājarṣiḥ priyadarśanaḥ
"she it is who is seen, tranquil, reciting the mantra for the supreme state. There was a royal sage named Chandraprabha, pleasant to behold."

तस्य कृष्णप्रसादेन पुत्रोऽभून्मधुराकृतिः । चित्रध्वज इति ख्यातः कौमारावधि वैष्णवः
tasya kṛṣṇaprasādena putro'bhūnmadhurākṛtiḥ citradhvaja iti khyātaḥ kaumārāvadhi vaiṣṇavaḥ
"By Krishna's grace, he had a son of sweet form, known as Chitradhvaja, a Vaishnava from his very boyhood."

स राजा सुसुतं सौम्यं सुस्थिरं द्वादशाब्दिकम् । आदेशयद्द्विजान्मंत्रं परमष्टादशाक्षरम्

"That king had brahmins instruct his gentle, steadfast son, aged twelve, in the supreme mantra of eighteen syllables."

"that day, the pure boy, clad in pure garments, adorned with necklace, anklets, strings, throat-ornaments, armlets and bracelets,"

"'How shall I worship that devotee-enchanter of the cowherd women, who ever sports with them on the banks of the Kalindi, in the forest?'"

"Thus reflecting, exceedingly troubled in mind, that boy then obtained a supreme vision, even in a dream."

"Then she, lotus-petal-eyed, having gone near Chitradhvaja, remained meditating upon non-difference of his limbs with her own."

"from the light of her hips arose a lovely, round pair of hips; from the light of her hair-locks his hair became a braid, his hands her hands,"

सर्वमेवं सुसंपन्नं भूषावासः स्रगादिकम् । कलासु कुशला जाता सौरभेनांतरात्मनि

"everything thus became perfectly complete — ornaments, garments, garlands and the rest; he became skilled in the arts, through the very fragrance entering his inner self."

"As if lighting one lamp from another, that fortunate maiden on earth — the transformed Chitradhvaja, her shyness broken, her smile lovely and enchanting —"

"she took her by both hands with love and, joyfully, took her away, and embracing her own beloved standing at Govinda's left side,"

"'Always remain near, and sing in various melodies, O embodiment of virtue — this is the duty appointed for you toward the Lord of Life.'"

अथ चित्रकला त्वाज्ञां गृहीत्वानम्य माधवम् । तत्प्रेयस्याश्च चरणं गृहीत्वा पादयो रजः

"sang a most sweet song, the very cause of their joy. Then, embraced with love by Krishna, the very form of bliss,"

"while she was still full in that ocean of joy, at that very moment he awoke. Overcome with great love, absorbed in remembering him,"

तमेव परमानंदं मुक्तकंठो रुरोद ह । तदारभ्य रुदन्नेव मुक्त्वा हरिविचारकम्

"he wept aloud for that very supreme bliss, his throat unrestrained. From then on, weeping continually, having abandoned all thought but of Hari,"

आभाषितोऽपि पित्राद्यैर्नैवावोचद्वचः क्वचित् । मासमात्रं गृहे स्थित्वा निशीथे कृष्णसंश्रयः

"though addressed by his father and others, he never spoke a word in reply. Having remained at home for only a month, at night, taking refuge in Krishna,"

निर्गत्यारण्यमचरत्तपो वै मुनिदुष्करम् । कल्पांते देहमुत्सृज्य तपसैव महामुनिः
nirgatyāraṇyamacarattapo vai muniduṣkaram kalpāṁte dehamutsṛjya tapasaiva mahāmuniḥ
"he went forth into the forest and practiced austerity difficult even for sages. At the end of that kalpa, casting off his body through that very austerity, that great sage,"

वीरगुप्ताभिधानस्य गोपस्य दुहिता शुभा । जाता चित्रकलेत्येव यस्याः स्कंधे मनोहरा

"became the auspicious daughter of a cowherd named Viragupta, born as Chitrakala — on whose shoulder, lovely,"

विपंची दृश्यते नित्यं सप्तस्वरविभूषिता । उपतिष्ठति वै वामे रत्नभृंगारमद्भुतम्
vipaṁcī dṛśyate nityaṁ saptasvaravibhūṣitā upatiṣṭhati vai vāme ratnabhṛṁgāramadbhutam
"a lute, adorned with the seven notes, is always seen. In her left hand there always appears a wondrous jeweled ewer,"

दधाना दक्षिणे हस्ते सा वै रत्नपतद्ग्रहम् । अयमासीत्पुरा सर्वं तापसैरभिवंदितः
dadhānā dakṣiṇe haste sā vai ratnapatadgraham ayamāsītpurā sarvaṁ tāpasairabhivaṁditaḥ
"and in her right hand she holds a jeweled cup. There was formerly a sage revered by all ascetics, named Punyashrava,"

मुनिः पुण्यश्रवा नाम काश्यपः सर्वधर्मवित् । पिता तस्याभवच्छैवः शतरुद्रीयमन्वहम्
muniḥ puṇyaśravā nāma kāśyapaḥ sarvadharmavit pitā tasyābhavacchaivaḥ śatarudrīyamanvaham
"a Kashyapa, knower of all dharma. His father was a devotee of Shiva, who daily recited the Shatarudriya hymn,"

"on the fourteenth night, at midnight, appeared before him and granted a boon: 'Your son shall be devoted to Krishna even from boyhood.'"

उपनीयाष्टमे वर्षे तस्मै सिद्धमनुस्त्वयम् । उपदिशैकविंशत्या यो मया ते निगद्यते

"'When he is invested with the sacred thread in his eighth year, teach him this perfected mantra of twenty-one syllables, which I now declare to you.'"

गोपालविद्यानामायं मंत्रो वाक्सिद्धिदायकः । एतत्साधकजिह्वाग्रे लीलाचरितमद्भुतम्
gopālavidyānāmāyaṁ maṁtro vāksiddhidāyakaḥ etatsādhakajihvāgre līlācaritamadbhutam
"'This mantra of Gopala-vidya bestows the power of speech; upon the tip of the reciter's tongue appears this wondrous tale of divine play.'"

अनंतमूर्तिरायाति स्वयमेव वरप्रदः । काममाया रमाकंठ सेंद्रा दामोदरोज्ज्वलाः
anaṁtamūrtirāyāti svayameva varapradaḥ kāmamāyā ramākaṁṭha seṁdrā dāmodarojjvalāḥ
"'The infinite-formed one comes of his own accord, the very bestower of boons. Kama, Maya, Rama's own syllable, with the throat of Indra, radiant with Damodara —'"

मध्ये दशाक्षरीं प्रोच्य पुनस्ता एव निर्दिशेत् । दशाक्षरोक्तऋष्यादिध्यानं चास्य ब्रवीम्यहम्
madhye daśākṣarīṁ procya punastā eva nirdiśet daśākṣaroktaṛṣyādidhyānaṁ cāsya bravīmyaham
"'having pronounced the ten-syllabled mantra in the middle, one should again indicate those same seed-syllables. I shall now tell you the meditation on the sages declared in this ten-syllabled mantra.'"

पूर्णामृतनिधेर्मध्ये द्वीपं ज्योतिर्मयं स्मरेत् । कालिंद्या वेष्टितं तत्र ध्यायेद्वृंदावने वने
pūrṇāmṛtanidhermadhye dvīpaṁ jyotirmayaṁ smaret kāliṁdyā veṣṭitaṁ tatra dhyāyedvṛṁdāvane vane
"'In the midst of the ocean of complete nectar, one should remember an island made of light, encircled by the Kalindi; there one should meditate, in the forest of Vrindavana,'"

सर्वर्तुकुसुमस्रावि द्रुमवल्लीभिरावृतम् । नटन्मत्तशिखिस्वानं गायत्कोकिलषट्पदम्
sarvartukusumasrāvi drumavallībhirāvṛtam naṭanmattaśikhisvānaṁ gāyatkokilaṣaṭpadam
"'dripping with flowers of every season, covered with trees and creepers, resounding with the dancing of intoxicated peacocks and the singing of cuckoos and bees.'"

तस्य मध्ये वसत्येकः पारिजाततरुर्महान् । शाखोपशाखाविस्तारैः शतयोजनमुच्छ्रितः
tasya madhye vasatyekaḥ pārijātatarurmahān śākhopaśākhāvistāraiḥ śatayojanamucchritaḥ
"'In its midst dwells a single great Parijata tree, risen to a hundred yojanas high with the spread of its branches and boughs.'"

तले तस्याथ विमले परितो धेनुमंडलम् । तदंतर्मंडलं गोपबालानां वेणुशृंगिणाम्
tale tasyātha vimale parito dhenumaṁḍalam tadaṁtarmaṁḍalaṁ gopabālānāṁ veṇuśṛṁgiṇām
"'At its foot, in that pure place, all around is a circle of cows; within that circle is a circle of cowherd boys with their flutes and horns;'"

तदंतरे तु रुचिरं मंडलं व्रज सुभ्रुवाम् । नानोपायनपाणीनां मदविह्वलचेतसाम्
tadaṁtare tu ruciraṁ maṁḍalaṁ vraja subhruvām nānopāyanapāṇīnāṁ madavihvalacetasām
"'and within that, a lovely circle of the fair-browed women of Vraja, their hands full of various offerings, their minds overwhelmed with passion,'"

कृतांजलिपुटानां च मंडलं शुक्लवाससाम् । शुक्लाभरणभूषाणां प्रेमविह्वलितात्मनाम्
kṛtāṁjalipuṭānāṁ ca maṁḍalaṁ śuklavāsasām śuklābharaṇabhūṣāṇāṁ premavihvalitātmanām
"'a circle of those with joined palms, clad in white, adorned with white ornaments, their souls overwhelmed with love;'"

चिंतयेच्छ्रुतिकन्यानां गृह्णतीनां वचः प्रियम् । रत्नवेद्यां ततो ध्यायेद्दुकूलावरणं हरिम्
ciṁtayecchrutikanyānāṁ gṛhṇatīnāṁ vacaḥ priyam ratnavedyāṁ tato dhyāyeddukūlāvaraṇaṁ harim
"'one should meditate upon the daughters of the Shrutis receiving his beloved words. Then, upon a jeweled altar, one should meditate upon Hari clad in fine silk,'"

ऊरौ शयानं राधायाः कदलीकांडकोपरि । तद्वक्त्रं चंद्र सुस्मेरं वीक्षमाणं मनोहरम्
ūrau śayānaṁ rādhāyāḥ kadalīkāṁḍakopari tadvaktraṁ caṁdra susmeraṁ vīkṣamāṇaṁ manoharam
"'lying upon Radha's thighs, resting upon a plantain stalk, his moon-like face, sweetly smiling, gazing upon her, enchanting,'"

किंचित्कुंचितवामांघ्रिं वेणुयुक्तेन पाणिना । वामेनालिंग्य दयितां दक्षेण चिबुकं स्पृशन्

"'his radiance like a great emerald, and like pearl too, his eyes wide as a white lotus, wearing spotless yellow silk,'"

बर्हभारलसच्छीर्षं मुक्ताहारमनोहरम् । गंडप्रांतलसच्चारु मकराकृतिकुंडलम्
barhabhāralasacchīrṣaṁ muktāhāramanoharam gaṁḍaprāṁtalasaccāru makarākṛtikuṁḍalam
"'his head resplendent with the weight of peacock feathers, enchanting with a pearl necklace, his cheeks bright at their edges with lovely makara-shaped earrings,'"

आपादतुलसीमालं कंकणांगदभूषणम् । नूपुरैर्मुद्रिकाभिश्च कांच्या च परिमंडितम्
āpādatulasīmālaṁ kaṁkaṇāṁgadabhūṣaṇam nūpurairmudrikābhiśca kāṁcyā ca parimaṁḍitam
"'wearing a garland of tulasi from head to foot, adorned with bangles and armlets, decorated all around with anklets, rings, and a girdle-belt,'"

सुकुमारतरं ध्यायेत्किशोरवयसान्वितम् । पूजा दशाक्षरोक्तैव वेदलक्षं पुरस्क्रिया
sukumārataraṁ dhyāyetkiśoravayasānvitam pūjā daśākṣaroktaiva vedalakṣaṁ puraskriyā
"'one should meditate upon him, most tender, endowed with the age of youth. His worship is exactly as declared in the ten-syllabled mantra; the offering equals a hundred thousand recitations of the Veda.'"

इत्युक्त्वांतर्दधे देवो देवी च गिरिजा सती । मुनिरागत्य पुत्राय तथैवोपदिदेश ह
ityuktvāṁtardadhe devo devī ca girijā satī munirāgatya putrāya tathaivopadideśa ha
Having said this, the god vanished, together with the goddess, virtuous Girija. The sage then came and taught this very same thing to his son.

पुण्यश्रवास्तु तन्मंत्र ग्रहणादेव केशवम् । वर्णयामास विविधैर्जित्वा सर्वान्मुनीन्स्वयम्
puṇyaśravāstu tanmaṁtra grahaṇādeva keśavam varṇayāmāsa vividhairjitvā sarvānmunīnsvayam
Punyashrava, from the very moment of receiving that mantra, described Keshava in manifold ways, himself surpassing all sages,

रूपलावण्यवैदग्ध्य सौंदर्याश्चर्यलक्षणम् । तदा हृष्टमना बालो निर्गत्य स्वगृहात्ततः

in the wondrous marks of his beauty, loveliness, skill, and splendor. Then, glad at heart, that boy went forth from his own home,

and performed austerity, living on air alone, for thirty thousand kalpas. At the end of that, he was born in Gokula, in the very house of Nanda's brother,

लवंगा इति तन्नाम कृष्णेंगित निरीक्षणा । यस्या हस्ते प्रदृश्येत मुखमार्जनयंत्रकम्
lavaṁgā iti tannāma kṛṣṇeṁgita nirīkṣaṇā yasyā haste pradṛśyeta mukhamārjanayaṁtrakam
her name Lavanga, watchful of Krishna's every gesture — in whose hand is seen a face-cleansing implement.

इति ते कथिताः काश्चित्प्रधानाः कृष्णवल्लभाः
iti te kathitāḥ kāścitpradhānāḥ kṛṣṇavallabhāḥ
"Thus have I told you some of the chief beloveds of Krishna."

हरिविविधरसाद्यैर्युक्तमध्यायमेतद्व्रजवरतनयाभिश्चारुहासेक्षणाभिः । पठति य इह भक्त्या पाठयेद्वा मनुष्यो व्रजति भगवतः श्रीवासुदेवस्य धाम
harivividharasādyairyuktamadhyāyametadvrajavaratanayābhiścāruhāsekṣaṇābhiḥ paṭhati ya iha bhaktyā pāṭhayedvā manuṣyo vrajati bhagavataḥ śrīvāsudevasya dhāma
Whoever reads this chapter, filled with Hari's manifold sweetness together with the daughters of Vraja's finest, of lovely smiles and glances, with devotion, or causes it to be read, that person goes to the abode of the Lord, Shri Vasudeva.
