Verse 1 (padma.5.73.1)

ईश्वर उवाच-। यत्त्वया पृष्टमाश्चर्यं तन्मया भाषितं क्रमात् । यत्र मुह्यंति ब्रह्माद्यास्तत्र को वा न मुह्यति

īśvara uvāca- yattvayā pṛṣṭamāścaryaṁ tanmayā bhāṣitaṁ kramāt yatra muhyaṁti brahmādyāstatra ko vā na muhyati

Ishvara said: "That wonder which you asked of me, I have declared to you in order; where even Brahma and the others are bewildered, who indeed is not bewildered there?"

Verse 2 (padma.5.73.2)

तथापि ते प्रवक्ष्यामि यदुक्तं परमर्षिणा । महाराजमंबरीषं विष्णुभक्तं शिवान्वितम्

tathāpi te pravakṣyāmi yaduktaṁ paramarṣiṇā mahārājamaṁbarīṣaṁ viṣṇubhaktaṁ śivānvitam

"Yet I shall tell you further what was spoken by the great sage Vyasa to King Ambarisha, devoted to Vishnu, and also to Shiva."

Verse 3 (padma.5.73.3)

बदर्याश्रममासाद्य समासीनं जितेंद्रियम् । राजा प्रणम्य तुष्टाव विष्णुधर्मविवित्सया

badaryāśramamāsādya samāsīnaṁ jiteṁdriyam rājā praṇamya tuṣṭāva viṣṇudharmavivitsayā

"Having come to the hermitage of Badari, seeing Vyasa seated there, master of his senses, the king, bowing, praised him, desiring to know the dharma of Vishnu."

Verse 4 (padma.5.73.4)

वेदव्यासं महाभागं सर्वज्ञं पुरुषोत्तमम् । मां त्वं संसारदुष्पारे परित्रातुमिहार्हसि

vedavyāsaṁ mahābhāgaṁ sarvajñaṁ puruṣottamam māṁ tvaṁ saṁsāraduṣpāre paritrātumihārhasi

"'O Vedavyasa, greatly blessed, all-knowing, Purushottama — you are fit to save me here from this ocean of worldly existence, hard to cross.'"

Verse 5 (padma.5.73.5)

विषयेषु विरक्तोऽस्मि नमस्तेभ्यो नमोखिलम् । यत्तत्पदमनुद्विग्नं सच्चिदानंदविग्रहम्

viṣayeṣu virakto'smi namastebhyo namokhilam yattatpadamanudvignaṁ saccidānaṁdavigraham

"'I am detached from sense-objects; salutations to you, salutations in every way. That state which is free of agitation, of the form of being-consciousness-bliss,'"

Verse 6 (padma.5.73.6)

परं ब्रह्म पराकाशमनाकाशमनामयम् । यत्साक्षात्कृत्य मुनयो भवांभोधिं तरंति हि

paraṁ brahma parākāśamanākāśamanāmayam yatsākṣātkṛtya munayo bhavāṁbhodhiṁ taraṁti hi

"'the supreme Brahman, beyond space, without corporeal form, free from affliction — realizing which directly, sages cross the ocean of worldly existence —'"

Verse 7 (padma.5.73.7)

तत्राहं मनसो नित्यं कथं गतिमवाप्नुयाम् । व्यास उवाच-। अतिगोप्यं त्वया पृष्टं यन्मया न शुकं प्रति

tatrāhaṁ manaso nityaṁ kathaṁ gatimavāpnuyām vyāsa uvāca- atigopyaṁ tvayā pṛṣṭaṁ yanmayā na śukaṁ prati

"'how may I, with my mind, ever attain to that goal?'" Vyasa said: "You have asked me a most secret thing, which I did not even tell my own son Shuka,"

Verse 8 (padma.5.73.8)

गदितं स्वसुतं किंतु त्वां वक्ष्यामि हरिप्रियम् । आसीदिदं परं विश्वं यद्रूपं यत्प्रतिष्ठितम्

gaditaṁ svasutaṁ kiṁtu tvāṁ vakṣyāmi haripriyam āsīdidaṁ paraṁ viśvaṁ yadrūpaṁ yatpratiṣṭhitam

"but to you, beloved of Hari, I shall tell it. This supreme universe existed as it now stands, established in whatever form it holds —"

Verse 9 (padma.5.73.9)

अव्याकृतमव्यथितं तदीश्वरमयं शृणु । मया कृतं तपः पूर्वं बहुवर्षसहस्रकम्

avyākṛtamavyathitaṁ tadīśvaramayaṁ śṛṇu mayā kṛtaṁ tapaḥ pūrvaṁ bahuvarṣasahasrakam

"unmanifest, untroubled — know that it is of the very nature of the Lord. Formerly, I performed austerity for many thousand years,"

Verse 10 (padma.5.73.10)

फलमूलपलाशांबु वाय्वाहारनिषेविणा । ततो मामाहभगवान्स्वध्याननिरतं हरिः

phalamūlapalāśāṁbu vāyvāhāraniṣeviṇā tato māmāhabhagavānsvadhyānanirataṁ hariḥ

"living on fruits, roots, leaves, water and air. Then the Lord Hari spoke to me, absorbed in meditation upon myself."

Verse 11 (padma.5.73.11)

कस्मिन्नर्थे चिकीर्षाते विवित्सा वा महामते । प्रसन्नोऽस्मि वृणुष्व त्वं वरं च वरदर्षभात्

kasminnarthe cikīrṣāte vivitsā vā mahāmate prasanno'smi vṛṇuṣva tvaṁ varaṁ ca varadarṣabhāt

"'For what purpose do you wish to act, or what do you desire to know, O great-minded one? I am pleased; choose a boon from me, the foremost bestower of boons.'"

Verse 12 (padma.5.73.12)

मद्दर्शनांतः संसार इति सत्यं ब्रवीमि ते । ततोऽहमब्रुवं कृष्णं पुलकोत्फुल्लविग्रहः

maddarśanāṁtaḥ saṁsāra iti satyaṁ bravīmi te tato'hamabruvaṁ kṛṣṇaṁ pulakotphullavigrahaḥ

"'The end of worldly existence lies within the sight of me — this truth I declare to you.'" Then I said to Krishna, my form thrilled with rapture,

Verse 13 (padma.5.73.13)

त्वामहं द्रष्टुमिच्छामि चक्षुर्भ्यां मधुसूदन । यत्तत्सत्यं परं ब्रह्म जगज्ज्योतिं जगत्पतिम्

tvāmahaṁ draṣṭumicchāmi cakṣurbhyāṁ madhusūdana yattatsatyaṁ paraṁ brahma jagajjyotiṁ jagatpatim

"'I wish to see You with my own eyes, O Madhusudana — that supreme Brahman, the truth, the light of the world, the lord of the world,'"

Verse 14 (padma.5.73.14)

वदंति वेदशिरसश्चाक्षुषं नाथमद्भुतम् । श्रीभगवानुवाच-। ब्रह्मणैवं पुरा पृष्टः प्रार्थितश्च यथा पुरा

vadaṁti vedaśirasaścākṣuṣaṁ nāthamadbhutam śrībhagavānuvāca- brahmaṇaivaṁ purā pṛṣṭaḥ prārthitaśca yathā purā

"'whom the crown of the Vedas declares to be the wondrous lord perceptible to the eye.'" The blessed Lord said: "As Brahma once asked and entreated me,"

Verse 15 (padma.5.73.15)

यदवोचमहं तस्मै तत्तुभ्यमपि कथ्यते । मामेके प्रकृतिं प्राहुः पुरुषं च तथेश्वरम्

yadavocamahaṁ tasmai tattubhyamapi kathyate māmeke prakṛtiṁ prāhuḥ puruṣaṁ ca tatheśvaram

"what I told him, that I now tell you as well. Some call me Prakriti, and likewise Purusha, the Lord;"

Verse 16 (padma.5.73.16)

धर्ममेके धनं चैके मोक्षमेकेऽकुतोभयम् । शून्यमेके भावमेके शिवमेके सदाशिवम्

dharmameke dhanaṁ caike mokṣameke'kutobhayam śūnyameke bhāvameke śivameke sadāśivam

"some call me Dharma, some Wealth, some Liberation free of all fear; some call me the Void, some Being, some Shiva, some Sadashiva;"

Verse 17 (padma.5.73.17)

अपरे वेदशिरसि स्थितमेकं सनातनम् । सद्भावं विक्रियाहीनं सच्चिदानंदविग्रहम्

apare vedaśirasi sthitamekaṁ sanātanam sadbhāvaṁ vikriyāhīnaṁ saccidānaṁdavigraham

"others, as declared in the crown of the Vedas, call me the one, eternal, of true nature, free from all change, of the form of being-consciousness-bliss."

Verse 18 (padma.5.73.18)

पश्याद्य दर्शयिष्यामि स्वरूपं वेदगोपितम् । ततोऽपश्यं भूपबालमहं कालांबुदप्रभम्

paśyādya darśayiṣyāmi svarūpaṁ vedagopitam tato'paśyaṁ bhūpabālamahaṁ kālāṁbudaprabham

"Behold — I shall now show you that form which is hidden even by the Vedas." Then I saw a cowherd boy, dark as a rain-cloud,

Verse 19 (padma.5.73.19)

गोपकन्यावृतं गोपं हसंतं गोपबालकैः । कदंबमूलआसीनं पीतवाससमद्भुतम्

gopakanyāvṛtaṁ gopaṁ hasaṁtaṁ gopabālakaiḥ kadaṁbamūlaāsīnaṁ pītavāsasamadbhutam

"surrounded by cowherd maidens, a cowherd laughing among cowherd boys, seated at the root of a kadamba tree, wearing yellow garments, wondrous,"

Verse 20 (padma.5.73.20)

वनं वृंदावनं नाम नवपल्लवमंडितम् । कोकिलभ्रमरारावं मनोभव मनोहरम्

vanaṁ vṛṁdāvanaṁ nāma navapallavamaṁḍitam kokilabhramarārāvaṁ manobhava manoharam

"and the forest called Vrindavana, adorned with fresh shoots, resounding with cuckoos and bees, enchanting as the very mind of Kama."

Verse 21 (padma.5.73.21)

नदीमपश्यं कालिंदीमिंदीवरदलप्रभाम् । गोवर्द्धनमथापश्यं कृष्णरामकरोद्धृतम्

nadīmapaśyaṁ kāliṁdīmiṁdīvaradalaprabhām govarddhanamathāpaśyaṁ kṛṣṇarāmakaroddhṛtam

"I saw the river Kalindi, radiant as a blue-lotus petal; and I saw Govardhana, lifted by the hands of Krishna and Rama,"

Verse 22 (padma.5.73.22)

महेंद्रदर्पनाशाय गोगोपालसुखावहम् । गोपालमबलासंगमुदितं वेणुवादिनम्

maheṁdradarpanāśāya gogopālasukhāvaham gopālamabalāsaṁgamuditaṁ veṇuvādinam

"to destroy the pride of great Indra, bringing joy to the cows and cowherds. I saw Gopala, delighted in the company of the cowherd women, playing his flute,"

Verse 23 (padma.5.73.23)

दृष्ट्वातिहृष्टो ह्यभवं सर्वभूषणभूषणम् । ततो मामाह भगवान्वृंदावनचरः स्वयम्

dṛṣṭvātihṛṣṭo hyabhavaṁ sarvabhūṣaṇabhūṣaṇam tato māmāha bhagavānvṛṁdāvanacaraḥ svayam

"and seeing this I became exceedingly joyful — the very ornament of all ornaments. Then the Lord, who himself wanders in Vrindavana, spoke to me:"

Verse 24 (padma.5.73.24)

यदिदं मे त्वया दृष्टं रूपं दिव्यं सनातनम् । निष्कलं निष्क्रियं शांतं सच्चिदानंदविग्रहम्

yadidaṁ me tvayā dṛṣṭaṁ rūpaṁ divyaṁ sanātanam niṣkalaṁ niṣkriyaṁ śāṁtaṁ saccidānaṁdavigraham

"'This form of mine that you have seen — divine, eternal, without parts, without action, tranquil, of the form of being-consciousness-bliss,'"

Verse 25 (padma.5.73.25)

पूर्णं पद्मपलाशाक्षं नातः परतरं मम । इदमेववदंत्येतेवेदाःकारणकारणम्

pūrṇaṁ padmapalāśākṣaṁ nātaḥ parataraṁ mama idamevavadaṁtyetevedāḥkāraṇakāraṇam

"'complete, with eyes like lotus petals — there is nothing beyond this that is mine. This alone the Vedas declare to be the cause of causes,'"

Verse 26 (padma.5.73.26)

सत्यंनित्यंपरानंदंचिद्घनंशाश्वतंशिवम् । नित्यां मे मथुरां विद्धि वनं वृंदावनं तथा

satyaṁnityaṁparānaṁdaṁcidghanaṁśāśvataṁśivam nityāṁ me mathurāṁ viddhi vanaṁ vṛṁdāvanaṁ tathā

"'the true, the eternal, the supreme bliss, the mass of consciousness, everlasting, auspicious. Know my Mathura to be eternal, likewise the forest of Vrindavana,'"

Verse 27 (padma.5.73.27)

यमुनां गोपकन्याश्च तथा गोपालबालकाः । ममावतारो नित्योऽयमत्र मा संशयं कृथाः

yamunāṁ gopakanyāśca tathā gopālabālakāḥ mamāvatāro nityo'yamatra mā saṁśayaṁ kṛthāḥ

"'the Yamuna, the cowherd maidens, and the cowherd boys too. This descent of mine is eternal here — have no doubt of this.'"

Verse 28 (padma.5.73.28)

ममेष्टा हि सदा राधा सर्वज्ञोऽहं परात्परः । सर्वकामश्च सर्वेशः सर्वानंदः परात्परः

mameṣṭā hi sadā rādhā sarvajño'haṁ parātparaḥ sarvakāmaśca sarveśaḥ sarvānaṁdaḥ parātparaḥ

"'Radha is ever my beloved; I am all-knowing, beyond the beyond; I am the fulfiller of all desires, lord of all, the bliss of all, beyond the beyond.'"

Verse 29 (padma.5.73.29)

मयि सर्वमिदं विश्वं भाति मायाविजृंभितम् । ततोऽहमब्रुवं देवं जगत्कारणकारणम्

mayi sarvamidaṁ viśvaṁ bhāti māyāvijṛṁbhitam tato'hamabruvaṁ devaṁ jagatkāraṇakāraṇam

"'In me this entire universe shines, expanded through maya.'" Then I said to the god, the very cause of causes of the world,

Verse 30 (padma.5.73.30)

काश्च गोप्यस्तु के गोपा वृक्षोऽयं कीदृशो मतः । वनं किं कोकिलाद्याश्च नदी केयं गिरिश्च कः

kāśca gopyastu ke gopā vṛkṣo'yaṁ kīdṛśo mataḥ vanaṁ kiṁ kokilādyāśca nadī keyaṁ giriśca kaḥ

"'Who are these gopis, and who are these gopas? What is thought of this tree? What is this forest, and who are these cuckoos and the rest? Who is this river, and who is this mountain?'"

Verse 31 (padma.5.73.31)

कोऽसौ वेणुर्महाभागो लोकानंदैकभाजनम् । भगवानाह मां प्रीतः प्रसन्नवदनांबुजः

ko'sau veṇurmahābhāgo lokānaṁdaikabhājanam bhagavānāha māṁ prītaḥ prasannavadanāṁbujaḥ

"'And who is this flute, greatly blessed, the sole vessel of the world's delight?' The Lord, pleased, his lotus face gracious, said to me:"

Verse 32 (padma.5.73.32)

गोप्यस्तु श्रुतयो ज्ञेया ऋचो वै गोपकन्यकाः । देवकन्याश्च राजेंद्र तपोयुक्ता मुमुक्षवः

gopyastu śrutayo jñeyā ṛco vai gopakanyakāḥ devakanyāśca rājeṁdra tapoyuktā mumukṣavaḥ

"'Know the gopis to be the Shrutis; indeed the Rig-verses are the cowherd maidens; and, O king of kings, the daughters of the gods, endowed with austerity, seeking liberation,'"

Verse 33 (padma.5.73.33)

गोपाला मुनयः सर्वे वैकुंठानंदमूर्त्तयः । कल्पवृक्षः कदंबोऽयं परानंदैकभाजनम्

gopālā munayaḥ sarve vaikuṁṭhānaṁdamūrttayaḥ kalpavṛkṣaḥ kadaṁbo'yaṁ parānaṁdaikabhājanam

"'the gopas, all of them, are the sages, embodiments of the bliss of Vaikuntha. This kadamba tree is a wish-fulfilling tree, the sole vessel of supreme bliss.'"

Verse 34 (padma.5.73.34)

वनमानंदकाख्यं हि महापातकनाशनम् । सिद्धाश्च साध्या गंधर्वाः कोकिलाद्या न संशयः

vanamānaṁdakākhyaṁ hi mahāpātakanāśanam siddhāśca sādhyā gaṁdharvāḥ kokilādyā na saṁśayaḥ

"'The forest is called Ananda, destroyer of the greatest sins. The cuckoos and the rest are, without doubt, the Siddhas, Sadhyas, and Gandharvas.'"

Verse 35 (padma.5.73.35)

केचिदानंदहृदयं साक्षाद्यमुनया तनुम् । अनादिर्हरिदासोऽयं भूधरो नात्र संशयः

kecidānaṁdahṛdayaṁ sākṣādyamunayā tanum anādirharidāso'yaṁ bhūdharo nātra saṁśayaḥ

"'Some are the very heart of bliss embodied — know the river itself to be directly mine; this mountain is Hari's eternal, beginningless servant — of this there is no doubt.'"

Verse 36 (padma.5.73.36)

वेणुर्यः शृणुतं विप्रं तवापि विदितं तथा । द्विज आसीच्छांतमनास्तपः शांतिपरायणः

veṇuryaḥ śṛṇutaṁ vipraṁ tavāpi viditaṁ tathā dvija āsīcchāṁtamanāstapaḥ śāṁtiparāyaṇaḥ

"'And the flute — hear this, O brahmin, for it is known to you too: there was once a brahmin, of tranquil mind, devoted to peace through austerity,'"

Verse 37 (padma.5.73.37)

नाम्ना देवव्रतोदांतः कर्मकांडविशारदः । स वैष्णवजनव्रातमध्यवर्त्ती क्रियापरः

nāmnā devavratodāṁtaḥ karmakāṁḍaviśāradaḥ sa vaiṣṇavajanavrātamadhyavarttī kriyāparaḥ

"'named Devavrata, self-controlled, expert in the ritual portion of the Veda. He dwelt in the midst of a company of Vaishnava men, devoted to ritual action.'"

Verse 38 (padma.5.73.38)

स कदाचन शुश्राव यज्ञेशोऽस्तीति भूपते । तस्य गेहमथाभ्यागाद्द्विजो मद्गतनिश्चयः

sa kadācana śuśrāva yajñeśo'stīti bhūpate tasya gehamathābhyāgāddvijo madgataniścayaḥ

"'He once heard, O king, that there is a lord of sacrifice. That brahmin, his mind fixed upon me, then came to his house.'"

Verse 39 (padma.5.73.39)

स मद्भक्तः क्वचित्पूजां तुलसीदलवारिणा । कृतवांस्तद्गृहे किंचित्फलं मूलं न्यवेदयत्

sa madbhaktaḥ kvacitpūjāṁ tulasīdalavāriṇā kṛtavāṁstadgṛhe kiṁcitphalaṁ mūlaṁ nyavedayat

"'He, my devotee, worshipped somewhere with tulasi leaves and water; in his house he offered some fruit and root.'"

Verse 40 (padma.5.73.40)

स्नानवारिफलं किंचित्तस्मै मत्या ददौ सुधीः । अश्रद्धया स्मितं कृत्वा सोऽप्यगृह्णाद्द्विजन्मनः

snānavāriphalaṁ kiṁcittasmai matyā dadau sudhīḥ aśraddhayā smitaṁ kṛtvā so'pyagṛhṇāddvijanmanaḥ

"'That wise one gave him, out of devotion to me, a little fruit along with bathing-water; but that brahmin took it from him, smiling, though without full reverence.'"

Verse 41 (padma.5.73.41)

तेन पापेन संजातं वेणुत्वमतिदारुणम् । तेन पुण्येन तस्याथ मदीय प्रियतां गतः

tena pāpena saṁjātaṁ veṇutvamatidāruṇam tena puṇyena tasyātha madīya priyatāṁ gataḥ

"'By that sin, a most terrible existence as a flute came upon him; yet by that same act of merit, he attained to becoming my own beloved.'"

Verse 42 (padma.5.73.42)

अमुना सोपि राजेंद्र केतुमानिव राजते । युगांते तद्विष्णुपरो भूत्वा ब्रह्म समाप्स्यति

amunā sopi rājeṁdra ketumāniva rājate yugāṁte tadviṣṇuparo bhūtvā brahma samāpsyati

"'By this, O king of kings, he too shines like one bearing a banner; at the end of the age, having become wholly devoted to Vishnu, he shall attain Brahman.'"

Verse 43 (padma.5.73.43)

अहो न जानंति नरा दुराशयाः पुरीं मदीयां परमां सनातनीम् । सुरेंद्र नागेंद्र मुनींद्र संस्तुतां मनोरमां तां मथुरां पुरातनीम्

aho na jānaṁti narā durāśayāḥ purīṁ madīyāṁ paramāṁ sanātanīm sureṁdra nāgeṁdra munīṁdra saṁstutāṁ manoramāṁ tāṁ mathurāṁ purātanīm

"Alas, men of evil intent do not know my supreme, eternal city, praised by the lords of gods, the lords of serpents, the lords of sages, that enchanting, ancient Mathura!"

Verse 44 (padma.5.73.44)

काश्यादयो यद्यपि संति पुर्यस्तासां तु मध्ये मथुरैव धन्या । यज्जन्ममौंजीव्रतमृत्युदाहैर्नृणां चतुर्द्धा विदधाति मुक्तिम्

kāśyādayo yadyapi saṁti puryastāsāṁ tu madhye mathuraiva dhanyā yajjanmamauṁjīvratamṛtyudāhairnṛṇāṁ caturddhā vidadhāti muktim

"Though there are cities such as Kashi, among them Mathura alone is blessed, for it grants mankind liberation in four ways — through birth, the sacred-thread rite, death, and cremation."

Verse 45 (padma.5.73.45)

यदा विशुद्धास्तपआदिना जनाः शुभाशया ध्यानधना निरंतरम् । तदैव पश्यंति ममोत्तमां पुरीं न चान्यथा कल्पशतैर्द्विजोत्तमाः

yadā viśuddhāstapaādinā janāḥ śubhāśayā dhyānadhanā niraṁtaram tadaiva paśyaṁti mamottamāṁ purīṁ na cānyathā kalpaśatairdvijottamāḥ

"Only when men, purified by austerity and the rest, of auspicious intent, ever devoted to meditation — only then do they see my supreme city, and not otherwise, even in a hundred kalpas, O best of brahmins."

Verse 46 (padma.5.73.46)

मथुरावासिनो धन्या मान्या अपि दिवौकसाम् । अगण्यमहिमानस्ते सर्व एव चतुर्भुजाः

mathurāvāsino dhanyā mānyā api divaukasām agaṇyamahimānaste sarva eva caturbhujāḥ

"The dwellers of Mathura are blessed, honored even by the gods; their glory is beyond count — all of them are, as it were, four-armed."

Verse 47 (padma.5.73.47)

मथुरावासिनो ये तु दोषान्पश्यंति मानवाः । तेषु दोषं न पश्यंति जन्ममृत्युसहस्रजम्

mathurāvāsino ye tu doṣānpaśyaṁti mānavāḥ teṣu doṣaṁ na paśyaṁti janmamṛtyusahasrajam

"Even in those men who perceive faults in the dwellers of Mathura, no fault is seen, though born of a thousand births and deaths."

Verse 48 (padma.5.73.48)

अधना अपि ते धन्या मथुरां ये स्मरंति ते । यत्र भूतेश्वरो देवो मोक्षदः पापिनामपि

adhanā api te dhanyā mathurāṁ ye smaraṁti te yatra bhūteśvaro devo mokṣadaḥ pāpināmapi

"Even the poor are blessed if they but remember Mathura, where the god Bhuteshvara grants liberation even to sinners."

Verse 49 (padma.5.73.49)

मम प्रियतमो नित्यं देवो भूतेश्वरः परः । यः कदापि मम प्रीत्यै न संत्यजति तां पुरीम्

mama priyatamo nityaṁ devo bhūteśvaraḥ paraḥ yaḥ kadāpi mama prītyai na saṁtyajati tāṁ purīm

"The supreme god Bhuteshvara is ever my most beloved; he never, for my sake, abandons that city."

Verse 50 (padma.5.73.50)

भूतेश्वरं यो न नमेन्न पूजयेन्न वास्मरेद्दुश्चरितो मनुष्यः । नैनां स पश्येन्मथुरां मदीयां स्वयंप्रकाशां परदेवताख्याम्

bhūteśvaraṁ yo na namenna pūjayenna vāsmaredduścarito manuṣyaḥ naināṁ sa paśyenmathurāṁ madīyāṁ svayaṁprakāśāṁ paradevatākhyām

"Whoever does not bow to Bhuteshvara, does not worship him, or does not even remember him — that ill-conducted man shall never see this Mathura of mine, self-luminous, called the supreme deity."

Verse 51 (padma.5.73.51)

न कथं मयि भक्तिं स लभते पापपूरुषः । यो मदीयं परं भक्तं शिवं संपूजयेन्नहि

na kathaṁ mayi bhaktiṁ sa labhate pāpapūruṣaḥ yo madīyaṁ paraṁ bhaktaṁ śivaṁ saṁpūjayennahi

"How, indeed, can such a sinful man attain devotion to me, who does not worship my own supreme devotee Shiva?"

Verse 52 (padma.5.73.52)

मन्मायामोहितधियः प्रायस्ते मानवाधमाः । भूतेश्वरं न नमंति न स्मरंति स्तुवंति ये

manmāyāmohitadhiyaḥ prāyaste mānavādhamāḥ bhūteśvaraṁ na namaṁti na smaraṁti stuvaṁti ye

"Those base men, their minds deluded by my maya, generally neither bow to, remember, nor praise Bhuteshvara."

Verse 53 (padma.5.73.53)

बालकोऽपि ध्रुवो यत्र ममाराधनतत्परः । प्राप स्थानं परं शुद्धं यत्नयुक्तं पितामहैः

bālako'pi dhruvo yatra mamārādhanatatparaḥ prāpa sthānaṁ paraṁ śuddhaṁ yatnayuktaṁ pitāmahaiḥ

"Even the boy Dhruva, devoted there to my worship, attained that supreme, pure state which even the forefathers strive hard to attain."

Verse 54 (padma.5.73.54)

तां पुरीं प्राप्य मथुरां मदीयां सुरदुर्लभाम् । खंजो भूत्वांधको वापि प्राणानेव परित्यजेत्

tāṁ purīṁ prāpya mathurāṁ madīyāṁ suradurlabhām khaṁjo bhūtvāṁdhako vāpi prāṇāneva parityajet

"Having attained that city of mine, Mathura, hard even for the gods to obtain, one should give up one's very life-breath there, even lame or blind."

Verse 55 (padma.5.73.55)

वेदव्यासमहाभाग मा कृथाः संशयं क्वचित् । रहस्यं वेदशिरसां यन्मया ते प्रकाशितम्

vedavyāsamahābhāga mā kṛthāḥ saṁśayaṁ kvacit rahasyaṁ vedaśirasāṁ yanmayā te prakāśitam

"O greatly blessed Vedavyasa, harbor no doubt whatsoever; this secret of the crown of the Vedas I have now revealed to you."

Verse 56 (padma.5.73.56)

इमं भगवता प्रोक्तमध्यायं यः पठेच्छुचिः । शृणुयाद्वापि यो भक्त्या मुक्तिस्तस्यापि शाश्वती

imaṁ bhagavatā proktamadhyāyaṁ yaḥ paṭhecchuciḥ śṛṇuyādvāpi yo bhaktyā muktistasyāpi śāśvatī

"Whoever reads this chapter, spoken by the Lord, with purity, or whoever hears it with devotion, for him too liberation is eternal."
