Verse 1 (padma.5.74.1)

ईश्वर उवाच-। एकदा रहसि श्रीमानुद्धवो भगवित्प्रियः । सनत्कुमारमेकांते ह्यपृच्छत्पार्षदः प्रभो

īśvara uvāca- ekadā rahasi śrīmānuddhavo bhagavitpriyaḥ sanatkumāramekāṁte hyapṛcchatpārṣadaḥ prabho

Ishvara said: "Once, in private, the glorious Uddhava, beloved of the Lord, asked Sanatkumara privately, 'O attendant, O lord,'"

Verse 2 (padma.5.74.2)

यत्र क्रीडति गोविंदो नित्यं नित्यसुरास्पदे । गोपांगनाभिर्यत्स्थानं कुत्र वा कीदृशं परम्

yatra krīḍati goviṁdo nityaṁ nityasurāspade gopāṁganābhiryatsthānaṁ kutra vā kīdṛśaṁ param

"'the place where Govinda ever sports, in the eternal abode of the eternal gods, with the cowherd women — where and of what nature is that supreme place?'"

Verse 3 (padma.5.74.3)

तत्तत्क्रीडनवृत्तांतमन्यद्यद्यत्तदद्भुतम् । ज्ञातं चेत्तव तत्कथ्यं स्नेहो मे यदि वर्त्तते

tattatkrīḍanavṛttāṁtamanyadyadyattadadbhutam jñātaṁ cettava tatkathyaṁ sneho me yadi varttate

"'Whatever the details of that play, and whatever else is wondrous there — if you know it, you should tell it, if you have affection for me.'"

Verse 4 (padma.5.74.4)

सनत्कुमार उवाच-। कदाचिद्यमुनाकूले कस्यापि च तरोस्तले । सुवृत्तेनोपविष्टेन भगवत्पार्षदेन वै

sanatkumāra uvāca- kadācidyamunākūle kasyāpi ca tarostale suvṛttenopaviṣṭena bhagavatpārṣadena vai

Sanatkumara said: "Once, on the bank of the Yamuna, beneath some tree, a well-composed attendant of the Lord was seated,"

Verse 5 (padma.5.74.5)

यद्रहोऽनुभवस्तस्य पार्थेनापि महात्मना । दृष्टं कृतं च यद्यत्तत्प्रसंगात्कथितं मयि

yadraho'nubhavastasya pārthenāpi mahātmanā dṛṣṭaṁ kṛtaṁ ca yadyattatprasaṁgātkathitaṁ mayi

"and whatever secret experience of his, along with that of the great-souled Partha, was seen and done — that was told to me in the course of conversation."

Verse 6 (padma.5.74.6)

तत्तेऽहं कथयाम्येतच्छृणुष्वावहितः परम् । किंत्वेतद्यत्र कुत्रापि न प्रकाश्यं कदाचन

tatte'haṁ kathayāmyetacchṛṇuṣvāvahitaḥ param kiṁtvetadyatra kutrāpi na prakāśyaṁ kadācana

"That I shall now tell you; listen attentively. But this must never, anywhere, be revealed."

Verse 7 (padma.5.74.7)

अर्जुन उवाच-। शंकराद्यैर्विरिंच्याद्यैरदृष्टमश्रुतं च यत् । सर्वमेतत्कृपांभोधे कृपया कथय प्रभो

arjuna uvāca- śaṁkarādyairviriṁcyādyairadṛṣṭamaśrutaṁ ca yat sarvametatkṛpāṁbhodhe kṛpayā kathaya prabho

Arjuna said: "What even Shankara, Brahma and the others have not seen or heard — all of that, O ocean of compassion, tell me out of grace, my Lord."

Verse 8 (padma.5.74.8)

किं त्वया कथितं पूर्वमाभीर्यस्तव वल्लभाः । तास्ताः कतिविधा देव कति वा संख्यया पुनः

kiṁ tvayā kathitaṁ pūrvamābhīryastava vallabhāḥ tāstāḥ katividhā deva kati vā saṁkhyayā punaḥ

"'What have you told before of your beloved cowherd women? Of how many kinds are they, O god, and how many in number?'"

Verse 9 (padma.5.74.9)

नामानि कति वा तासां का वा कुत्र व्यवस्थिताः । तासां वा कति कर्माणि वयोवेषश्च कः प्रभो

nāmāni kati vā tāsāṁ kā vā kutra vyavasthitāḥ tāsāṁ vā kati karmāṇi vayoveṣaśca kaḥ prabho

"'How many are their names, and who are they, and where are they established? What are their deeds, their age, their attire, O Lord?'"

Verse 10 (padma.5.74.10)

काभिः सार्द्धं क्व वा देव विहरिष्यसि भो रहः । नित्ये नित्यसुखे नित्यविभवे च वने वने

kābhiḥ sārddhaṁ kva vā deva vihariṣyasi bho rahaḥ nitye nityasukhe nityavibhave ca vane vane

"'With whom, and where, O god, do you sport in private? In that eternal, eternally blissful, eternally glorious realm, in forest after forest?'"

Verse 11 (padma.5.74.11)

तत्स्थानं कीदृशं कुत्र शाश्वतं परमं महत् । कृपा चेत्तादृशी तन्मे सर्वं वक्तुमिहार्हसि

tatsthānaṁ kīdṛśaṁ kutra śāśvataṁ paramaṁ mahat kṛpā cettādṛśī tanme sarvaṁ vaktumihārhasi

"'What is that place like, and where — eternal, supreme, great? If your grace is such, you should tell me all of this here.'"

Verse 12 (padma.5.74.12)

यदपृष्टं मयाप्येवमज्ञातं यद्रहस्तव । आर्तार्तिघ्न महाभाग सर्वं तत्कथयिष्यसि

yadapṛṣṭaṁ mayāpyevamajñātaṁ yadrahastava ārtārtighna mahābhāga sarvaṁ tatkathayiṣyasi

"'That which I have asked, and which is unknown, your secret — O destroyer of the afflicted's affliction, greatly blessed one, you shall tell me all of it.'"

Verse 13 (padma.5.74.13)

श्रीभगवानुवाच-। तत्स्थानं वल्लभास्ता मे विहारस्तादृशो मम । अपि प्राणसमानानां सत्यं पुंसामगोचरः

śrībhagavānuvāca- tatsthānaṁ vallabhāstā me vihārastādṛśo mama api prāṇasamānānāṁ satyaṁ puṁsāmagocaraḥ

The blessed Lord said: "That place, those beloveds, that sport of mine — it is truly beyond the reach even of those men who are dear to me as my own life."

Verse 14 (padma.5.74.14)

कथिते दृष्टुमुत्कंठा तव वत्स भविष्यति । ब्रह्मादीनामदृश्यं यत्किं तदन्य जनस्य वै

kathite dṛṣṭumutkaṁṭhā tava vatsa bhaviṣyati brahmādīnāmadṛśyaṁ yatkiṁ tadanya janasya vai

"'Once told, you will have a longing to see it, my child. What is invisible even to Brahma and the others — how much more to other people!'"

Verse 15 (padma.5.74.15)

तस्माद्विरम वत्सैतत्किं नु तेन विना तव । एवं भगवतस्तस्य श्रुत्वा वाक्यं सुदारुणम्

tasmādvirama vatsaitatkiṁ nu tena vinā tava evaṁ bhagavatastasya śrutvā vākyaṁ sudāruṇam

"'Therefore, my child, desist from this; what use is it to you without that?'" Having heard these harsh words of the Lord,

Verse 16 (padma.5.74.16)

दीनः पादांबुजद्वंद्वे दंडवत्पतितोऽर्जुनः । ततो विहस्य भगवान्दोर्भ्यामुत्थाप्य तं विभुः

dīnaḥ pādāṁbujadvaṁdve daṁḍavatpatito'rjunaḥ tato vihasya bhagavāndorbhyāmutthāpya taṁ vibhuḥ

Arjuna, downcast, fell prostrate at his pair of lotus feet. Then, smiling, the all-pervading Lord lifted him up with both arms,

Verse 17 (padma.5.74.17)

उवाच परमप्रेम्णा भक्ताय भक्तवत्सलः । तत्किं तत्कथनेनात्र द्रष्टव्यं चेत्त्वया हि यत्

uvāca paramapremṇā bhaktāya bhaktavatsalaḥ tatkiṁ tatkathanenātra draṣṭavyaṁ cettvayā hi yat

and spoke with the greatest love to his devotee, being ever kind to devotees: "'What is the use, then, of merely telling of it, if it is something you must actually see?'"

Verse 18 (padma.5.74.18)

यस्यां सर्वं समुत्पन्नं यस्यामद्यापि तिष्ठति । लयमेष्यति तां देवीं श्रीमत्त्रिपुरसुंदरीम्

yasyāṁ sarvaṁ samutpannaṁ yasyāmadyāpi tiṣṭhati layameṣyati tāṁ devīṁ śrīmattripurasuṁdarīm

"'That goddess in whom all this was born, in whom it now abides, and into whom it shall dissolve — that glorious Tripura-sundari —'"

Verse 19 (padma.5.74.19)

आराध्य परया भक्त्या तस्यै स्वं च निवेदय । तां विनैतत्पदं दातुं न शक्नोमि कदाचन

ārādhya parayā bhaktyā tasyai svaṁ ca nivedaya tāṁ vinaitatpadaṁ dātuṁ na śaknomi kadācana

"'worship her with supreme devotion, and offer yourself to her. Without her, I am never able to grant this state.'"

Verse 20 (padma.5.74.20)

श्रुत्वैतद्भगवद्वाक्यं पार्थो हर्षाकुलेक्षणः । श्रीमत्यास्त्रिपुरादेव्या ययौ श्रीपादुकातलम्

śrutvaitadbhagavadvākyaṁ pārtho harṣākulekṣaṇaḥ śrīmatyāstripurādevyā yayau śrīpādukātalam

Hearing these words of the Lord, Partha, his eyes filled with joy, went to the soles of the feet of the glorious goddess Tripura.

Verse 21 (padma.5.74.21)

तत्र गत्वा ददर्शैनां श्रीचिंतामणिवेदिकाम् । नानारत्नैर्विरचितैः सोपानैरतिशोभिताम्

tatra gatvā dadarśaināṁ śrīciṁtāmaṇivedikām nānāratnairviracitaiḥ sopānairatiśobhitām

Having gone there, he saw her, at the altar of the wish-fulfilling gem, most beautifully adorned with steps made of various jewels.

Verse 22 (padma.5.74.22)

तत्र कल्पतरुं नाना पुष्पैः फलभवैर्नतम् । सर्वर्त्तुकोमलदलैः स्नवन्माध्वीकशीकरैः

tatra kalpataruṁ nānā puṣpaiḥ phalabhavairnatam sarvarttukomaladalaiḥ snavanmādhvīkaśīkaraiḥ

There a wish-fulfilling tree, bent low with many flowers and fruits, with tender leaves of every season, dripping drops of honey-mead,

Verse 23 (padma.5.74.23)

वर्षद्भिर्वायुनालोलैः पल्लवैरुज्ज्वलीकृतम् । शुकैश्च कोकिलगणैः सारिकाभिः कपोतकैः

varṣadbhirvāyunālolaiḥ pallavairujjvalīkṛtam śukaiśca kokilagaṇaiḥ sārikābhiḥ kapotakaiḥ

made radiant by leaves trembling in the gentle, wandering breeze, resounding with parrots, flocks of cuckoos, mynahs, and doves,

Verse 24 (padma.5.74.24)

लीलाचकोरकै रम्यैः पक्षिभिश्च निनादितम् । यत्र गुंजद्भृंगराज कोलाहलसमाकुलम्

līlācakorakai ramyaiḥ pakṣibhiśca nināditam yatra guṁjadbhṛṁgarāja kolāhalasamākulam

with lovely, playful chakora birds and other birds, filled with the humming uproar of buzzing bees,

Verse 25 (padma.5.74.25)

मणिभिर्भास्वरैरुद्यद्दावानल मनोहरम् । श्रीरत्नमंदिरं दिव्यं तले तस्य महाद्भुतम्

maṇibhirbhāsvarairudyaddāvānala manoharam śrīratnamaṁdiraṁ divyaṁ tale tasya mahādbhutam

enchanting with blazing gems, like a rising forest-fire in beauty. Beneath it, a wondrous, divine jeweled temple —

Verse 26 (padma.5.74.26)

रत्नसिंहासनं तत्र महाहैमाभिमोहनम् । तत्र बालार्कसंकाशां नानालंकारभूषिताम्

ratnasiṁhāsanaṁ tatra mahāhaimābhimohanam tatra bālārkasaṁkāśāṁ nānālaṁkārabhūṣitām

there a jeweled throne, enchanting with great gold. There, resembling the rising sun, adorned with manifold ornaments,

Verse 27 (padma.5.74.27)

नवयौवनसंपन्नां सृणिपाशधनुः शरैः । राजच्चतुर्भुजलतां सुप्रसन्नां मनोहराम्

navayauvanasaṁpannāṁ sṛṇipāśadhanuḥ śaraiḥ rājaccaturbhujalatāṁ suprasannāṁ manoharām

endowed with fresh youth, her four-armed form bearing goad, noose, bow, and arrows, most gracious, enchanting,

Verse 28 (padma.5.74.28)

ब्रह्मविष्णुमहेशादि किरीटमणिरश्मिभिः । विराजितपदांभोजामणिमादिभिरावृताम्

brahmaviṣṇumaheśādi kirīṭamaṇiraśmibhiḥ virājitapadāṁbhojāmaṇimādibhirāvṛtām

her lotus feet resplendent with the crown-jewel rays of Brahma, Vishnu, Mahesha and the rest, surrounded by Anima and the other siddhis,

Verse 29 (padma.5.74.29)

प्रसन्नवदनां देवीं वरदां भक्तवत्सलाम् । अर्जुनोऽहमिति ज्ञातः प्रणम्य च पुनःपुनः

prasannavadanāṁ devīṁ varadāṁ bhaktavatsalām arjuno'hamiti jñātaḥ praṇamya ca punaḥpunaḥ

that goddess of gracious countenance, bestower of boons, kind to devotees — recognized as "I am Arjuna," bowing again and again,

Verse 30 (padma.5.74.30)

विहितांजलिरेकांते स्थितो भक्तिभरान्वितः । सा तस्योपासितं ज्ञात्वा प्रसादं च कृपानिधिः

vihitāṁjalirekāṁte sthito bhaktibharānvitaḥ sā tasyopāsitaṁ jñātvā prasādaṁ ca kṛpānidhiḥ

with joined palms, he stood apart, filled with the weight of devotion. She, that treasury of compassion, knowing his worship and grace,

Verse 31 (padma.5.74.31)

उवाच कृपया देवी तस्य स्मरणविह्वला । भगवत्युवाच-। किं वा दानं त्वया वत्स कृतं पात्राय दुर्लभम्

uvāca kṛpayā devī tasya smaraṇavihvalā bhagavatyuvāca- kiṁ vā dānaṁ tvayā vatsa kṛtaṁ pātrāya durlabham

spoke to him with compassion, that goddess, overwhelmed with remembering him. The blessed goddess said: "What gift have you given, my child, to a worthy recipient, that is hard to give?"

Verse 32 (padma.5.74.32)

इष्टं यज्ञेन केनात्र तपो वा किमनुष्ठितम् । भगवत्यमला भक्तिः का वा प्राक्समुपार्ज्जिता

iṣṭaṁ yajñena kenātra tapo vā kimanuṣṭhitam bhagavatyamalā bhaktiḥ kā vā prāksamupārjjitā

"What sacrifice have you performed, or what austerity undertaken here? What immaculate devotion to the Lord have you earlier acquired?"

Verse 33 (padma.5.74.33)

किं वास्मिन्दुर्लभं लोके किं वा कर्म शुभं महत् । प्रसादस्त्वयि येनायं प्रपन्ने च मुदा किल

kiṁ vāsmindurlabhaṁ loke kiṁ vā karma śubhaṁ mahat prasādastvayi yenāyaṁ prapanne ca mudā kila

"What is rare in this world, or what great and auspicious deed have you done, by which such grace, with joy, has come to you upon surrender?"

Verse 34 (padma.5.74.34)

गूढातिगूढश्चानन्य लभ्यो भगवता कृतः । नैतादृङ्मर्त्यलोकानां न च भूतलवासिनाम्

gūḍhātigūḍhaścānanya labhyo bhagavatā kṛtaḥ naitādṛṅmartyalokānāṁ na ca bhūtalavāsinām

"This has been made by the Lord to be deeply hidden, attainable by none other — not for the men of the mortal world, nor for the dwellers of the earth,"

Verse 35 (padma.5.74.35)

स्वर्गिणां देवतादीनां तपस्वीश्वरयोगिनाम् । भक्तानां नैव सर्वेषां नैव नैव च नैव च

svargiṇāṁ devatādīnāṁ tapasvīśvarayoginām bhaktānāṁ naiva sarveṣāṁ naiva naiva ca naiva ca

"not for the celestials, gods, or lords of ascetics and yogis; not for all devotees — no, no, no, and no again."

Verse 36 (padma.5.74.36)

प्रसादस्तु कृतो वत्स तव विश्वात्मना यथा । तदेहि भज बुद्ध्वैव कुलकुंडं सरो मम

prasādastu kṛto vatsa tava viśvātmanā yathā tadehi bhaja buddhvaiva kulakuṁḍaṁ saro mama

"But such grace has been shown to you, my child, by the very Self of the universe. So come, and, having found my Kula-kunda, my own lake, worship there."

Verse 37 (padma.5.74.37)

सर्वकामप्रदा देवी त्वनया सह गम्यताम् । तत्रैव विधिवत्स्नात्वा द्रुतमागम्यतामिह

sarvakāmapradā devī tvanayā saha gamyatām tatraiva vidhivatsnātvā drutamāgamyatāmiha

"That goddess grants every desire; go there together with her. Having bathed there duly, return here quickly."

Verse 38 (padma.5.74.38)

तदैव तत्र गत्वा स स्नात्वा पार्थस्तथागतः । आगतं तं कृतस्नानं न्यासमुद्रार्पणादिकम्

tadaiva tatra gatvā sa snātvā pārthastathāgataḥ āgataṁ taṁ kṛtasnānaṁ nyāsamudrārpaṇādikam

Then Partha, having gone there at once, bathed, and returned. Having had him, now bathed, perform the placing of hands and the offering-mudras and the rest,

Verse 39 (padma.5.74.39)

कारयित्वा ततो देव्या तस्य वै दक्षिणश्रुतौ । सद्यः सिद्धिकरी बाला विद्यानिगदिता परा

kārayitvā tato devyā tasya vai dakṣiṇaśrutau sadyaḥ siddhikarī bālā vidyānigaditā parā

the goddess then, in his right ear, imparted to him that supreme maiden-knowledge which grants instant accomplishment —

Verse 40 (padma.5.74.40)

हकारार्द्धपरा द्वीपा द्वितीया विश्वभूषिता । अनुष्ठानं च पूजां च जपं च लक्षसंख्यकम्

hakārārddhaparā dvīpā dvitīyā viśvabhūṣitā anuṣṭhānaṁ ca pūjāṁ ca japaṁ ca lakṣasaṁkhyakam

beginning with half of the letter 'ha', the second vowel, adorned with the whole universe. The ritual, the worship, and the recitation of a hundred thousand repetitions,

Verse 41 (padma.5.74.41)

कोरकैः करवीराणां प्रयोगं च यथातथम् । निर्वर्त्य तमुवाचेदं कृपया परमेश्वरी

korakaiḥ karavīrāṇāṁ prayogaṁ ca yathātatham nirvartya tamuvācedaṁ kṛpayā parameśvarī

and the offering with the buds of oleander flowers, exactly as prescribed — having completed this, the supreme goddess said to him with compassion:

Verse 42 (padma.5.74.42)

अनेनैव विधानेन क्रियतां मदुपासनम् । ततो मयि प्रसन्नायां तवानुग्रहकारणात्

anenaiva vidhānena kriyatāṁ madupāsanam tato mayi prasannāyāṁ tavānugrahakāraṇāt

"'With this very method, my worship should be performed. Then, when I am pleased, by reason of my grace upon you,'"

Verse 43 (padma.5.74.43)

ततस्तु तत्र पर्य्यंतेष्वधिकारो भविष्यति । इत्ययं नियमः पूर्वं स्वयं भगवता कृतः

tatastu tatra paryyaṁteṣvadhikāro bhaviṣyati ityayaṁ niyamaḥ pūrvaṁ svayaṁ bhagavatā kṛtaḥ

"'thereafter, in the end, you shall have entitlement.'" Such was the rule laid down formerly by the Lord himself.

Verse 44 (padma.5.74.44)

श्रुत्वैवमर्जुनस्तेन वर्मणा तां समर्चयत् । ततः पूजां जपं चैव कृत्वा देवी प्रसादिता

śrutvaivamarjunastena varmaṇā tāṁ samarcayat tataḥ pūjāṁ japaṁ caiva kṛtvā devī prasāditā

Hearing this, Arjuna worshipped her with that very method. Then, having performed the worship and recitation, the goddess, pleased,

Verse 45 (padma.5.74.45)

कृत्वा ततः शुभं होमं स्नानं च विधिना ततः । कृतकृत्यमिवात्मानं प्राप्तप्रायमनोरथम्

kṛtvā tataḥ śubhaṁ homaṁ snānaṁ ca vidhinā tataḥ kṛtakṛtyamivātmānaṁ prāptaprāyamanoratham

having then performed an auspicious fire-offering and the bath according to rule, he considered himself as one who had accomplished his purpose, his desire nearly fulfilled,

Verse 46 (padma.5.74.46)

करस्थां सर्वसिद्धिं च स पार्थः सममन्यत । अस्मिन्नवसरे देवी तमागत्य स्मितानना

karasthāṁ sarvasiddhiṁ ca sa pārthaḥ samamanyata asminnavasare devī tamāgatya smitānanā

Partha thought all accomplishment as if already in his hand. At this moment, the goddess, coming to him, smiling,

Verse 47 (padma.5.74.47)

उवाच गच्छ वत्स त्वमधुना तद्गृहांतरे । ततः ससंभ्रमः पार्थः समुत्थाय मुदान्वितः

uvāca gaccha vatsa tvamadhunā tadgṛhāṁtare tataḥ sasaṁbhramaḥ pārthaḥ samutthāya mudānvitaḥ

said: "'Rise, my child, and now go within his very house.'" Then Partha, agitated, rose up filled with joy,

Verse 48 (padma.5.74.48)

असंख्यहर्षपूर्णात्मा दंडवत्तां ननाम ह । आज्ञप्तस्तु तया सार्द्धं देवी वयस्ययार्जुनः

asaṁkhyaharṣapūrṇātmā daṁḍavattāṁ nanāma ha ājñaptastu tayā sārddhaṁ devī vayasyayārjunaḥ

his soul filled with countless raptures, and bowed prostrate to her. Commanded by her, Arjuna, together with her companion,

Verse 49 (padma.5.74.49)

गतो राधापतिस्थानं यत्सिद्धैरप्यगोचरम् । ततश्च स उपादिष्टो गोलोकादुपरिस्थितम्

gato rādhāpatisthānaṁ yatsiddhairapyagocaram tataśca sa upādiṣṭo golokāduparisthitam

went to the place of Radha's Lord, invisible even to the Siddhas. And then he was shown, situated above Goloka,

Verse 50 (padma.5.74.50)

स्थिरं वायुधृतं नित्यं सत्यं सर्वसुखास्पदम् । नित्यं वृंदावनं नाम नित्यरासमहोत्सवम्

sthiraṁ vāyudhṛtaṁ nityaṁ satyaṁ sarvasukhāspadam nityaṁ vṛṁdāvanaṁ nāma nityarāsamahotsavam

fixed, sustained by divine wind, eternal, true, the abode of all happiness — the eternal Vrindavana, of eternal, great festivals of Rasa,

Verse 51 (padma.5.74.51)

अपश्यत्परमं गुह्यं पूर्णप्रेमरसात्मकम् । तस्या हि वचनादेव लोचनैर्वीक्ष्य तद्रहः

apaśyatparamaṁ guhyaṁ pūrṇapremarasātmakam tasyā hi vacanādeva locanairvīkṣya tadrahaḥ

he beheld that supreme secret, of the very essence of complete love-sweetness. By her very word, having gazed with his eyes upon that mystery,

Verse 52 (padma.5.74.52)

विवशः पतितस्तत्र विवृद्धप्रेमविह्वलः । ततः कृच्छ्राल्लब्धसंज्ञो दोर्भ्यामुत्थापितस्तया

vivaśaḥ patitastatra vivṛddhapremavihvalaḥ tataḥ kṛcchrāllabdhasaṁjño dorbhyāmutthāpitastayā

helplessly he fell there, overwhelmed by rapidly swelling love. Then, with great difficulty regaining his senses, lifted up by her with both arms,

सांत्वनावचनैस्तस्याः कथंचित्स्थैर्यमागतः । ततस्तपः किमन्यन्मे कर्त्तव्यं विद्यते वद

sāṁtvanāvacanaistasyāḥ kathaṁcitsthairyamāgataḥ tatastapaḥ kimanyanme karttavyaṁ vidyate vada

by her consoling words he somehow regained composure. "'What else, then, is the austerity that I must perform? Tell me.'"

Verse 54 (padma.5.74.54)

इति तद्दर्शनोत्कंठाभरेण तरलोऽभवत् । ततस्तया करे तस्य धृत्वा तत्पददक्षिणे

iti taddarśanotkaṁṭhābhareṇa taralo'bhavat tatastayā kare tasya dhṛtvā tatpadadakṣiṇe

Thus, from the intensity of his longing to see it, he became restless. Then, holding his hand, at her right side,

प्रतिपेदे सुदेशेन गत्वा चोक्तमिदं वचः । स्नानायैतच्छुभं पार्थ विश त्वं जलविस्तरम्

pratipede sudeśena gatvā coktamidaṁ vacaḥ snānāyaitacchubhaṁ pārtha viśa tvaṁ jalavistaram

she led him along a good path and spoke this word: "'For bathing, Partha, enter this auspicious expanse of water.'"

Verse 56 (padma.5.74.56)

सहस्रदलपद्मस्थ संस्थानं मध्यकोरकम् । चतुःसरश्चतुर्धारमाश्चर्यकुलसंकुलम्

sahasradalapadmastha saṁsthānaṁ madhyakorakam catuḥsaraścaturdhāramāścaryakulasaṁkulam

"'It is shaped like a thousand-petaled lotus, with a whorl at its center, four channels, four gates, filled with wondrous families.'"

Verse 57 (padma.5.74.57)

अस्यांतरे प्रविश्याथ विशेषमिह पश्यसि । एतस्य दक्षिणे देश एष चात्र सरोवरः

asyāṁtare praviśyātha viśeṣamiha paśyasi etasya dakṣiṇe deśa eṣa cātra sarovaraḥ

"'Entering into its midst, you will see something special here. To the south of this place is this very lake,'"

Verse 58 (padma.5.74.58)

मधुमाध्वीकपानं यन्नाम्ना मलयनिर्झरः । एतच्च फुल्लमुद्यानं वसंते मदनोत्सवम्

madhumādhvīkapānaṁ yannāmnā malayanirjharaḥ etacca phullamudyānaṁ vasaṁte madanotsavam

"'called Malaya-nirjhara — the drinking of honey-mead. And this is a garden in full bloom, the site of the spring festival of Kama,'"

Verse 59 (padma.5.74.59)

कुरुते यत्र गोविंदो वसंतकुसुमोचितम् । यत्रावतारं कृष्णस्य स्तुवंत्येव दिवानिशम्

kurute yatra goviṁdo vasaṁtakusumocitam yatrāvatāraṁ kṛṣṇasya stuvaṁtyeva divāniśam

"'which Govinda performs there, fitting for spring's flowers, where they praise, day and night, the very descent of Krishna,'"

Verse 60 (padma.5.74.60)

भवेद्यत्स्मरणादेव मुनेः स्वांते स्मरांकुरः । ततोऽस्मिन्सरसि स्नात्वा गत्वा पूर्वसरस्तटम्

bhavedyatsmaraṇādeva muneḥ svāṁte smarāṁkuraḥ tato'sminsarasi snātvā gatvā pūrvasarastaṭam

"'by whose mere remembrance the sprout of desire arises even in the heart of a sage. Then, having bathed in this lake, go to the bank of the former lake,'"

Verse 61 (padma.5.74.61)

उपस्पृश्य जलं तस्य साधयस्व मनोरथम् । ततस्तद्वचनं श्रुत्वा तस्मिन्सरसि तज्जले

upaspṛśya jalaṁ tasya sādhayasva manoratham tatastadvacanaṁ śrutvā tasminsarasi tajjale

"'touch its water and accomplish your heart's desire.'" Then, hearing her words, in that lake, in its water,

कल्हारकुमुदांभोजरक्तनीलोत्पलच्युतैः । परागैरंजिते मंजुवासिते मधुबिंदुभिः

kalhārakumudāṁbhojaraktanīlotpalacyutaiḥ parāgairaṁjite maṁjuvāsite madhubiṁdubhiḥ

tinged with the pollen fallen from kalhara, kumuda, lotus, blue and red lotuses, sweetly fragrant with drops of honey,

तुंदिले कलहंसादि नादैरांदोलिते ततः । रत्नाबद्धचतुस्तीरे मंदानिलतरंगिते

tuṁdile kalahaṁsādi nādairāṁdolite tataḥ ratnābaddhacatustīre maṁdānilataraṁgite

resounding with the calls of joyful royal swans and the like, its four banks bound with jewels, rippled by the gentle breeze,

मग्ने जलांतः पार्थे तु तत्रैवांतर्दधेऽथ सा । उत्थाय परितो वीक्ष्य संभ्रांता चारुहासिनी

magne jalāṁtaḥ pārthe tu tatraivāṁtardadhe'tha sā utthāya parito vīkṣya saṁbhrāṁtā cāruhāsinī

as Partha immersed himself in that water, she at once vanished from sight. Rising up and looking about, bewildered, that lovely-smiling one —

सद्यः शुद्धस्वर्णरश्मिगौरकांततनूलताम् । स्फुरत्किशोरवर्षीयां शारदेंदुनिभाननाम्

sadyaḥ śuddhasvarṇaraśmigaurakāṁtatanūlatām sphuratkiśoravarṣīyāṁ śāradeṁdunibhānanām

her body at once radiant with pure golden rays, fair-complexioned, in the fresh bloom of adolescence, her face like the autumn moon,

सुनीलकुटिलस्निग्धविलसद्रत्नकुंतलाम् । सिंदूरबिंदुकिरणप्रोज्ज्वलालकपट्टिकाम्

sunīlakuṭilasnigdhavilasadratnakuṁtalām siṁdūrabiṁdukiraṇaprojjvalālakapaṭṭikām

her dark-blue, curling, glossy, gleaming, jeweled locks, her braid-band bright with the rays of a vermilion dot,

उन्मीलद्भ्रूलताभंगि जितस्मरशरासनाम् । घनश्यामलसल्लोल खेलल्लोचनखंजनाम्

her arched, creeper-like eyebrows conquering the very bow of Kama, her restless, playfully moving eyes like wagtails against dense dark clouds,

मणिं कुंडलतेजोंशु विस्फुरद्गंडमण्डलाम् । मृणालकोमलभ्राजदाश्चर्यभुजवल्लरीम्

her cheeks flashing with the radiance of jeweled earrings, her wondrous creeper-like arms tender as lotus-stalks,

शरदंबुरुहां सर्वश्रीचौरपाणिपल्लवाम् । विदग्धरचितस्वर्णकटिसूत्रकृतांतराम्

śaradaṁburuhāṁ sarvaśrīcaurapāṇipallavām vidagdharacitasvarṇakaṭisūtrakṛtāṁtarām

her every limb the very thief of autumn's lotus-splendor and all beauty, her golden waist-cord skillfully wrought upon her middle,

कूजत्कांचीकलापांत विभ्राजज्जघनस्थलाम् । भ्राजद्दुकूलसंवीतनितंबोरुसुमंदिराम्

kūjatkāṁcīkalāpāṁta vibhrājajjaghanasthalām bhrājaddukūlasaṁvītanitaṁborusumaṁdirām

her hips resplendent with the tinkling clusters of her girdle-bells, her waist and thighs, a lovely temple, wrapped in shining silk,

शिंजानमणिमंजीरसुचारुपदपंकजाम् । स्फुरद्विविधकंदर्पकलाकौशलशालिनीम्

śiṁjānamaṇimaṁjīrasucārupadapaṁkajām sphuradvividhakaṁdarpakalākauśalaśālinīm

her lovely lotus feet tinkling with jeweled anklets, endowed with the manifold skill and art of Kama himself,

Verse 72 (padma.5.74.72)

सर्वलक्षणसंपन्नां सर्वाभरणभूषिताम् । आश्चर्यललनाश्रेष्ठामात्मानं सव्यलोकयत्

sarvalakṣaṇasaṁpannāṁ sarvābharaṇabhūṣitām āścaryalalanāśreṣṭhāmātmānaṁ savyalokayat

endowed with every auspicious mark, adorned with every ornament — that most wondrous of women looked upon herself,

Verse 73 (padma.5.74.73)

विसस्मार च यत्किंचित्पौर्वदेहिकमेव च । मायया गोपिकाप्राणनाथस्य तदनंतरम्

visasmāra ca yatkiṁcitpaurvadehikameva ca māyayā gopikāprāṇanāthasya tadanaṁtaram

and forgot whatever there had been of her former bodily existence. By the maya of the Lord of the gopikas' very life-breath, thereafter,

Verse 74 (padma.5.74.74)

इति कर्त्तव्यतामूढा तस्थौ तत्र सुविस्मिता । अत्रांतरेंऽबरे धीर ध्वनिराकस्मिकोऽभवत्

iti karttavyatāmūḍhā tasthau tatra suvismitā atrāṁtareṁ'bare dhīra dhvanirākasmiko'bhavat

bewildered as to what to do, she stood there, utterly astonished. At that moment, in the sky, a firm voice arose suddenly:

अनेनैव पथा सुभ्रु गच्छ पूर्वसरोवरम् । उपस्पृश्य जलं तस्य साधयस्व मनोरथम्

anenaiva pathā subhru gaccha pūrvasarovaram upaspṛśya jalaṁ tasya sādhayasva manoratham

"'By this very path, O fair-browed one, go to the former lake; touch its water and accomplish your heart's desire.'"

Verse 76 (padma.5.74.76)

तत्र संति हि सख्यस्ते मा सीद वरवर्णिनि । ता हि संपादयिष्यंति तत्रैव वरमीप्सितम्

tatra saṁti hi sakhyaste mā sīda varavarṇini tā hi saṁpādayiṣyaṁti tatraiva varamīpsitam

"'There indeed are your friends; do not despair, O excellent one. They indeed shall accomplish for you your desired boon there.'"

Verse 77 (padma.5.74.77)

इति दैवीं गिरं श्रुत्वा गत्वा पूर्वसरोऽथ सा । नानापूर्वप्रवाहं च नानापक्षिसमाकुलम्

iti daivīṁ giraṁ śrutvā gatvā pūrvasaro'tha sā nānāpūrvapravāhaṁ ca nānāpakṣisamākulam

Hearing this divine voice, she went to the former lake, with its manifold ancient currents, thronged with birds of every kind,

Verse 78 (padma.5.74.78)

स्फुरत्कैरवकह्लारकमलेंदीवरादिभिः । भ्राजितं पद्मरागैश्च पद्मसोपानसत्तटम्

sphuratkairavakahlārakamaleṁdīvarādibhiḥ bhrājitaṁ padmarāgaiśca padmasopānasattaṭam

resplendent with white water-lilies, kalhara, lotuses, blue lotuses and the like, radiant with rubies, its banks lovely with lotus-steps,

Verse 79 (padma.5.74.79)

विविधैः कुसुमोद्दामैर्मंजुकुंजलताद्रुमैः । विराजितचतुस्तीरमुपस्पृश्य स्थिता क्षणम्

vividhaiḥ kusumoddāmairmaṁjukuṁjalatādrumaiḥ virājitacatustīramupaspṛśya sthitā kṣaṇam

its four banks graced with manifold, abundant flowers, and lovely bowers of creepers and trees; having touched it, she stood there a moment.

Verse 80 (padma.5.74.80)

तत्रांतरे क्वणत्कांची मंजुमंजीररंजितम् । किंकिणीनां झणत्कारं शुश्रावोत्कर्णसंपुटे

tatrāṁtare kvaṇatkāṁcī maṁjumaṁjīraraṁjitam kiṁkiṇīnāṁ jhaṇatkāraṁ śuśrāvotkarṇasaṁpuṭe

Then, from within, she heard, in her attentive ears, the tinkling of girdle-bells, sweet anklets, and the jingling of small bells.

Verse 81 (padma.5.74.81)

ततश्च प्रमदावृंदमाश्चर्ययुतयौवनम् । आश्चर्यालंकृतिन्यासमाश्चर्याकृतिभाषितम्

tataśca pramadāvṛṁdamāścaryayutayauvanam āścaryālaṁkṛtinyāsamāścaryākṛtibhāṣitam

Then a throng of joyful women, of wondrously youthful beauty, with wondrous ornaments arranged, with wondrously formed speech,

अद्भुतांगमपूर्वं सा पृथगाश्चर्यविभ्रमम् । चित्रसंभाषणं चित्रहसितालोकनादिकम्

adbhutāṁgamapūrvaṁ sā pṛthagāścaryavibhramam citrasaṁbhāṣaṇaṁ citrahasitālokanādikam

of astonishing limbs, unprecedented, each with her own separate wondrous grace, of wondrous conversation, wondrous smiling glances and the like,

Verse 83 (padma.5.74.83)

मधुराद्भुतलावण्यं सर्वमाधुर्यसेवितम् । चिल्लावण्यगतानंतमाश्चर्याकुलसुंदरम्

madhurādbhutalāvaṇyaṁ sarvamādhuryasevitam cillāvaṇyagatānaṁtamāścaryākulasuṁdaram

of sweet and wondrous loveliness, served by every sweetness, of endless charm in their very gaze, wondrously beautiful,

Verse 84 (padma.5.74.84)

आश्चर्यस्निग्धसौंदर्यमाश्चर्यानुग्रहादिकम् । सर्वाश्चर्यसमुदयमाश्चर्यालोकनादिकम्

āścaryasnigdhasauṁdaryamāścaryānugrahādikam sarvāścaryasamudayamāścaryālokanādikam

of wondrously tender beauty, of wondrous graciousness and the like — a whole gathering of wonders, wondrous to behold and more —

Verse 85 (padma.5.74.85)

दृष्ट्वा तत्परमाश्चर्यं चिंतयंती हृदा कियत् । पादांगुष्ठेना लिखंती भुवं नम्रानना स्थिता

dṛṣṭvā tatparamāścaryaṁ ciṁtayaṁtī hṛdā kiyat pādāṁguṣṭhenā likhaṁtī bhuvaṁ namrānanā sthitā

seeing this supreme wonder, pondering somewhat within her heart, she stood with bowed face, tracing the ground with the toe of her foot.

Verse 86 (padma.5.74.86)

ततस्तासां संभ्रमोऽभूद्दृष्टीनां च परस्परम् । केयं मदीयजातीया चिरेणानस्तकौतुका

tatastāsāṁ saṁbhramo'bhūddṛṣṭīnāṁ ca parasparam keyaṁ madīyajātīyā cireṇānastakautukā

Then those women too were struck with mutual astonishment, glancing at one another: "Who is this, of our own kind, whose wonder we have never before beheld?"

Verse 87 (padma.5.74.87)

इति सर्वाः समालोक्य ज्ञातव्येयमिति क्षणम् । आमंत्र्य मंत्रणाभिज्ञाः कौतुकाद्द्रष्टुमागताः

iti sarvāḥ samālokya jñātavyeyamiti kṣaṇam āmaṁtrya maṁtraṇābhijñāḥ kautukāddraṣṭumāgatāḥ

Thus, having all looked upon her, thinking "this must be known," in a moment, consulting one another skillfully, they came, out of curiosity, to see her.

Verse 88 (padma.5.74.88)

आगत्य तासामेकाथ नाम्ना प्रियमुदा मता । गिरा मधुरया प्रीत्या तामुवाच मनस्विनी

āgatya tāsāmekātha nāmnā priyamudā matā girā madhurayā prītyā tāmuvāca manasvinī

Then one of them, named Priyamuda, joyful, approached her, and with a sweet, loving voice, that wise one spoke to her.

Verse 89 (padma.5.74.89)

प्रियमुदोवाच-। कासि त्वं कस्य कन्यासि कस्य त्वं प्राणवल्लभा । जाता कुत्रासि केनास्मिन्नानीता वा गता स्वयम्

priyamudovāca- kāsi tvaṁ kasya kanyāsi kasya tvaṁ prāṇavallabhā jātā kutrāsi kenāsminnānītā vā gatā svayam

Priyamuda said: "Who are you? Whose daughter are you? Whose beloved, dear to his very life-breath, are you? Where were you born? By whom were you brought here, or did you come of your own accord?"

Verse 90 (padma.5.74.90)

एतच्च सर्वमस्माकं कथ्यतां चिंतया किमु । स्थानेऽस्मिन्परमानंदे कस्यापि दुःखमस्ति किम्

etacca sarvamasmākaṁ kathyatāṁ ciṁtayā kimu sthāne'sminparamānaṁde kasyāpi duḥkhamasti kim

"Tell all this to us — why the worry? In this place of supreme bliss, does anyone here have any sorrow at all?"

Verse 91 (padma.5.74.91)

इति पृष्टा तया सा तु विनयावनतिं गता । उवाच सुस्वरं तासां मोहयंती मनांसि च

iti pṛṣṭā tayā sā tu vinayāvanatiṁ gatā uvāca susvaraṁ tāsāṁ mohayaṁtī manāṁsi ca

Thus questioned by her, she, bowed down with humility, spoke in a sweet voice, bewitching their minds as well.

Verse 92 (padma.5.74.92)

अर्जुन उवाच- । का वास्मि कस्य कन्या वा प्रजाता कस्य वल्लभा । आनीता केन वा चात्र किं वाथ स्वयमागता

arjuna uvāca- kā vāsmi kasya kanyā vā prajātā kasya vallabhā ānītā kena vā cātra kiṁ vātha svayamāgatā

Arjuni said: "Who indeed am I, whose daughter, or whose beloved have I become? Who brought me here, or did I come of your own accord?"

Verse 93 (padma.5.74.93)

एतत्किंचिन्न जानामि देवी जानातु तत्पुनः । कथितं श्रूयतां तन्मे मद्वाक्ये प्रत्ययो यदि

etatkiṁcinna jānāmi devī jānātu tatpunaḥ kathitaṁ śrūyatāṁ tanme madvākye pratyayo yadi

"This I do not know at all; let the goddess know it. Listen to what I tell you, if you trust my words."

Verse 94 (padma.5.74.94)

अस्यैव दक्षिणे पार्श्वे एकमस्ति सरोवरम् । तत्राहं स्नातुमायाता जाता तत्रैव संस्थिता

asyaiva dakṣiṇe pārśve ekamasti sarovaram tatrāhaṁ snātumāyātā jātā tatraiva saṁsthitā

"To the very south of this place there is a lake; I came there to bathe, and there I found myself in this form."

Verse 95 (padma.5.74.95)

विषमोत्कंठिता पश्चात्पश्यंती परितो दिशम् । एकमाकाशसंभूतं ध्वनिमश्रौषमद्भुतम्

viṣamotkaṁṭhitā paścātpaśyaṁtī parito diśam ekamākāśasaṁbhūtaṁ dhvanimaśrauṣamadbhutam

"Then, exceedingly restless, looking about in every direction, I heard a wondrous voice arise from the sky:"

Verse 96 (padma.5.74.96)

अनेनैव पथा सुभ्रु गच्छ पूर्वसरोवरम् । उपस्पृश्य जलं तस्य साधयस्व मनोरथम्

anenaiva pathā subhru gaccha pūrvasarovaram upaspṛśya jalaṁ tasya sādhayasva manoratham

"Hearing these words, from there I came here, my soul filled with both sorrow and joy, overwhelmed with anxious thought."

Verse 99 (padma.5.74.99)

आगतास्य जलं स्पृष्ट्वा नानाविधशुभध्वनिम् । अश्रौषं च ततः पश्चादपश्यं भवतीः पराः

āgatāsya jalaṁ spṛṣṭvā nānāvidhaśubhadhvanim aśrauṣaṁ ca tataḥ paścādapaśyaṁ bhavatīḥ parāḥ

"Having come, and touched this water, I heard various auspicious sounds, and then afterward I saw you all, most excellent ones."

Verse 100 (padma.5.74.100)

एतन्मात्रं विजानामि कायेन मनसा गिरा । एतदेव मया देव्यः कथितं यदि रोचते

etanmātraṁ vijānāmi kāyena manasā girā etadeva mayā devyaḥ kathitaṁ yadi rocate

"This much only do I know, in body, mind, and speech. This same thing I have told you, O goddesses, if it pleases you,"

Verse 101 (padma.5.74.101)

का यूयं तनुजाः केषां क्व जाताः कस्य वल्लभाः । तच्छ्रुत्वा वचनं तस्याः सा वै प्रियमुदाब्रवीत्

kā yūyaṁ tanujāḥ keṣāṁ kva jātāḥ kasya vallabhāḥ tacchrutvā vacanaṁ tasyāḥ sā vai priyamudābravīt

"who are you all, whose daughters, where born, whose beloveds?" Hearing her words, that Priyamuda spoke:

अस्त्वेवं प्राणसख्यः स्म तस्यैव च वयं शुभे । वृंदावनकलानाथ विहारदारिकाः सुखम्

astvevaṁ prāṇasakhyaḥ sma tasyaiva ca vayaṁ śubhe vṛṁdāvanakalānātha vihāradārikāḥ sukham

"So be it — we are, then, the dear friends of that very one, O auspicious one — the sporting maidens of Vrindavana's Lord of Arts, happily serving him."

Verse 103 (padma.5.74.103)

ता आत्ममुदितास्तेन व्रजबाला इहागताः । एताः श्रुतिगणाः ख्याता एताश्च मुनयस्तथा

tā ātmamuditāstena vrajabālā ihāgatāḥ etāḥ śrutigaṇāḥ khyātā etāśca munayastathā

"Rejoicing in themselves, these maidens of Vraja have come here. These are known as the multitude of Shrutis, and these too are the sages,"

Verse 104 (padma.5.74.104)

वयं बल्लवबाला हि कथितास्ते स्वरूपतः । अत्र राधापतेरंगात्पूर्वायाः प्रेयसीतमाः

vayaṁ ballavabālā hi kathitāste svarūpataḥ atra rādhāpateraṁgātpūrvāyāḥ preyasītamāḥ

"and we are the cowherd maidens — thus their true natures are described to you. Here are the foremost beloveds, born of the very being of Radha's Lord's primeval beloved,"

Verse 105 (padma.5.74.105)

नित्या नित्यविहारिण्यो नित्यकेलि भुवश्चराः । एषा पूर्णरसा देवी एषा च रसमंथरा

nityā nityavihāriṇyo nityakeli bhuvaścarāḥ eṣā pūrṇarasā devī eṣā ca rasamaṁtharā

eternal, eternally sporting, ever roaming the realms of eternal play. "This one, of full essence, is a goddess; this one is Rasa-manthara,"

Verse 106 (padma.5.74.106)

एषा रसालया नाम एषा च रसवल्लरी । रसपीयूषधारेयमेषा रसतरंगिणी

eṣā rasālayā nāma eṣā ca rasavallarī rasapīyūṣadhāreyameṣā rasataraṁgiṇī

"this one is named Rasalaya; this one is Rasa-vallari; this one is Rasa-piyusha-dhara; this one is Rasa-tarangini,"

"this one is Ananga-kusuma; this one is Madana-manjari; this one is named Kalavati; this one is remembered as Rati-kala,"

इयं कामकला नाम इयं हि कामदायिनी । रतिलोला इयं बाला इयं बाला रतोत्सुका

iyaṁ kāmakalā nāma iyaṁ hi kāmadāyinī ratilolā iyaṁ bālā iyaṁ bālā ratotsukā

"this one is named Kama-kala; this one is Kama-dayini; this maiden is Rati-lola; this maiden is eager for love-sport,"

एषा चरति सर्वस्व रतिचिंतामणिस्त्वसौ । नित्यानंदाः काश्चिदेता नित्यप्रेमरसप्रदाः

eṣā carati sarvasva raticiṁtāmaṇistvasau nityānaṁdāḥ kāścidetā nityapremarasapradāḥ

"this one moves as if the very essence of everything, the wish-fulfilling gem of love herself. Some of these are eternally blissful, bestowers of eternal love-sweetness."

Verse 112 (padma.5.74.112)

अतःपरं श्रुतिगणास्तासां काश्चिदिमाः शृणु । उद्गीतैषा सुगीतेयं कलगीता त्वियं प्रिया

ataḥparaṁ śrutigaṇāstāsāṁ kāścidimāḥ śṛṇu udgītaiṣā sugīteyaṁ kalagītā tviyaṁ priyā

"Beyond these, hear some of the multitude of Shrutis among them: this one is Udgita, this one is Sugita, this dear one is Kalagita,"

एषा कलसुराख्याता बालेयं कलकंठिका । विपंचीयं क्रमपदा एषा बहुहुता मता

eṣā kalasurākhyātā bāleyaṁ kalakaṁṭhikā vipaṁcīyaṁ kramapadā eṣā bahuhutā matā

"this one is known as Kalasura, this maiden is Kalakanthika, this one is Vipanchi, of measured steps; this one is held to be Bahuhuta,"

एषा बहुप्रयोगेयं ख्याता बहुकला बला । इयं कलावती ख्याता मता चैषा क्रियावती

eṣā bahuprayogeyaṁ khyātā bahukalā balā iyaṁ kalāvatī khyātā matā caiṣā kriyāvatī

"this one is known as Bahupraydga, this maiden is Bahukala; this one is known as Kalavati, and this one is held to be Kriyavati."

अतःपरं मुनिगणास्तासां कतिपया इह । इयमुग्रतपा नाम एषा बहुगुणा स्मृता

"Beyond these, here are a few of the sages among them: this one is named Ugratapa, this one is remembered as Bahuguna,"

"this one is named Priyavrata, and this is held to be Suvrata; this maiden is held to be Surekha, this one Suparva, giver of much,"

रत्नरेखा त्वियं ख्याता मणिग्रीवा त्वसौ मता । सुपर्णा चेयमाकल्पा सुकल्पा रत्नमालिका

ratnarekhā tviyaṁ khyātā maṇigrīvā tvasau matā suparṇā ceyamākalpā sukalpā ratnamālikā

"this one is known as Ratnarekha, that one is held to be Manigriva; this one is Suparna, adorned; this is Sukalpa, Ratna-malika,"

इयं सौदामिनी सुभ्रूरियं च कामदायिनी । एषा च भोगदाख्या ता इयं विश्वमता सती

iyaṁ saudāminī subhrūriyaṁ ca kāmadāyinī eṣā ca bhogadākhyā tā iyaṁ viśvamatā satī

"this fair-browed one is Saudamini; this one is Kama-dayini; this one is known as Bhogada; this is Vishva-mata, virtuous,"

एषा च धारिणी धात्री सुमेधा कांतिरप्यसौ । अपर्णेयं सुपर्णैषा मतैषा च सुलक्षणा

eṣā ca dhāriṇī dhātrī sumedhā kāṁtirapyasau aparṇeyaṁ suparṇaiṣā mataiṣā ca sulakṣaṇā

"this one is Dharini, the nurse; this one Sumedha, and that one too Kanti; this is Aparna, this Suparna, this one is held to be of good marks,"

सुदतीयं गुणवती चैषासौ कलिनी मता । एषा सुलोचना ख्याता इयं च सुमनाः स्मृता

sudatīyaṁ guṇavatī caiṣāsau kalinī matā eṣā sulocanā khyātā iyaṁ ca sumanāḥ smṛtā

"this one is Sudati, virtuous; and this one is held to be Kalini; this one is known as Sulochana, and this one is remembered as Sumanas,"

अश्रुता च सुशीला च रतिसुखप्रदायिनी । अतः परं गोपबाला वयमत्रागतास्तु याः

aśrutā ca suśīlā ca ratisukhapradāyinī ataḥ paraṁ gopabālā vayamatrāgatāstu yāḥ

"Ashruta and Sushila, bestower of the joy of love-sport. Beyond these are the cowherd maidens who have come here — we ourselves —"

तासां च परिचीयंतां काश्चिदंबुरुहानने । असौ चंद्रावली चैषा चंद्रिकेयं शुभा मता

"let some of them, O lotus-faced one, be made known to you as well. This is Chandravali, and this is held to be auspicious Chandrika,"

एषा चंद्रावली चंद्ररेखेयं चंद्रिकाप्यसौ । एषा ख्याता चंद्रमाला मता चंद्रालिकात्वियम्

eṣā caṁdrāvalī caṁdrarekheyaṁ caṁdrikāpyasau eṣā khyātā caṁdramālā matā caṁdrālikātviyam

"this is Chandravali, this is Chandra-rekha, this too is Chandrika; this one is known as Chandra-mala, and this one is held to be Chandralika,"

एषा चंद्रप्रभा चंद्रकलेयमबला स्मृता । एषा वर्णावली वर्णमालेयं मणिमालिका

"this one is Chandraprabha, this maiden is remembered as Chandra-kala; this one is Varnavali, this is Varna-mala, this is Mani-malika,"

वर्णप्रभा समाख्याता सुप्रभेयं मणिप्रभा । इयं हारावली तारा मालिनीयं शुभा मता

"this one is called Varna-prabha, this one Suprabha, this one Mani-prabha; this is Haravali, Tara; this one is held to be auspicious Malini,"

मालतीयमियं यूथी वासंती नवमल्लिका । मल्लीयं नवमल्लीयमसौ शेफालिका मता

mālatīyamiyaṁ yūthī vāsaṁtī navamallikā mallīyaṁ navamallīyamasau śephālikā matā

"this one is Malati, this one Yuthi, Vasanti, Nava-mallika; this is Malli, this is Nava-malli, that one is held to be Shephalika,"

सौगंधिकेयं कस्तूरी पद्मिनीयं कुमुद्वती । एषैव हि रसोल्लासा चित्रवृंदा समा त्वियम्

saugaṁdhikeyaṁ kastūrī padminīyaṁ kumudvatī eṣaiva hi rasollāsā citravṛṁdā samā tviyam

"this is Saugandhika, Kasturi; this is Padmini, Kumudvati; this very one is Rasollasa, and this one is likewise Chitravrinda,"

रंभेयमुर्वशी चैषा सुरेखा स्वर्णरेखिका । एषा कांचनमालेयं सत्यसंततिका परा

raṁbheyamurvaśī caiṣā surekhā svarṇarekhikā eṣā kāṁcanamāleyaṁ satyasaṁtatikā parā

"this is Rambha, and this is Urvashi; Surekha, Svarna-rekhika; this one is Kanchana-mala; this other is Satya-santatika."

एताः परिकृताः सर्वाः परिचेयाः परा अपि । सहितास्माभिरेताभिर्विहरिष्यसि भामिनि

etāḥ parikṛtāḥ sarvāḥ pariceyāḥ parā api sahitāsmābhiretābhirvihariṣyasi bhāmini

"All these are known, along with others too — together with all of us you shall sport, O gracious lady."

Verse 130 (padma.5.74.130)

एहि पूर्वसरस्तीरे तत्र त्वां विधिवत्सखि । स्नापयित्वाथ दास्यामि मंत्रं सिद्धिप्रदायकम्

ehi pūrvasarastīre tatra tvāṁ vidhivatsakhi snāpayitvātha dāsyāmi maṁtraṁ siddhipradāyakam

"Come, to the bank of the former lake; there, my friend, having bathed you duly, I shall give you the mantra that bestows accomplishment."

Verse 131 (padma.5.74.131)

इति तां सहसा नीत्वा स्नापयित्वा विधानतः । वृंदावनकलानाथ प्रेयस्या मंत्रमुत्तमम्

iti tāṁ sahasā nītvā snāpayitvā vidhānataḥ vṛṁdāvanakalānātha preyasyā maṁtramuttamam

Thus, having led her there at once, having bathed her according to rite, the supreme mantra of the beloved of Vrindavana's Lord of Arts,

ग्राहयामास संक्षेपाद्दीक्षाविधिपुरस्सरम् । परं वरुणबीजस्य वह्निबीजपुरस्कृतम्

grāhayāmāsa saṁkṣepāddīkṣāvidhipurassaram paraṁ varuṇabījasya vahnibījapuraskṛtam

having had her receive it in brief, preceded by the rite of initiation — supremely with the seed of Varuna preceded by the seed of fire,

Verse 133 (padma.5.74.133)

चतुर्थस्वरसंयुक्तं नादबिंदुविभूषितम् । पुटितं प्रणवाभ्यां च त्रैलोक्ये चातिदुर्ल्लभम्

caturthasvarasaṁyuktaṁ nādabiṁduvibhūṣitam puṭitaṁ praṇavābhyāṁ ca trailokye cātidurllabham

joined with the fourth vowel, adorned with nada and bindu, wrapped with the two pranavas, exceedingly rare even in the three worlds.

मंत्रग्रहणमात्रेण सिद्धिः सर्वा प्रजायते । पुरश्चर्याविधिर्ध्यानं होमसंख्याजपस्य च

maṁtragrahaṇamātreṇa siddhiḥ sarvā prajāyate puraścaryāvidhirdhyānaṁ homasaṁkhyājapasya ca

By the mere reception of the mantra, all accomplishment arises. The rite of the preliminary practice, the meditation, and the number of fire-oblations and recitations,

तप्तकांचनगौरांगीं नानालंकारभूषिताम् । आश्चर्यरूपलावण्यां सुप्रसन्नां वरप्रदाम्

taptakāṁcanagaurāṁgīṁ nānālaṁkārabhūṣitām āścaryarūpalāvaṇyāṁ suprasannāṁ varapradām

and the meditation upon her of molten-gold fairness, adorned with manifold ornaments, of wondrous form and loveliness, exceedingly gracious, bestower of boons —

कल्हारैः करवीराद्यैश्चंपकैः सरसीरुहैः । सुगंधकुसुमैरन्यैः सौगंधिकसमन्वितैः

kalhāraiḥ karavīrādyaiścaṁpakaiḥ sarasīruhaiḥ sugaṁdhakusumairanyaiḥ saugaṁdhikasamanvitaiḥ

with kalhara, oleander and other flowers, champaka, lotuses, other fragrant blossoms together with sweet-scented ones,

पाद्यार्घ्याचमनीयैश्च धूपदीपैर्मनोहरैः । नैवेद्यैर्विविधैर्दिव्यैः सखीवृंदाहृतैर्मुदा

pādyārghyācamanīyaiśca dhūpadīpairmanoharaiḥ naivedyairvividhairdivyaiḥ sakhīvṛṁdāhṛtairmudā

with water for the feet, offering-water, sipping-water, incense and lamps, enchanting, with manifold divine food-offerings brought joyfully by her friends,

संपूज्य विधिवद्देवीं जप्त्वा लक्षमनुं ततः । हुत्वा च विधिना स्तुत्वा प्रणम्य दंडवद्भुवि

saṁpūjya vidhivaddevīṁ japtvā lakṣamanuṁ tataḥ hutvā ca vidhinā stutvā praṇamya daṁḍavadbhuvi

having duly worshipped the goddess, and recited the mantra a hundred thousand times, having then made the fire-offering according to rule, praised her, and bowed prostrate to the ground —

ततः सा संस्तुता देवी निमेषरहितांतरा । परिकल्प्य निजां छायां माययात्मसमीहया

tataḥ sā saṁstutā devī nimeṣarahitāṁtarā parikalpya nijāṁ chāyāṁ māyayātmasamīhayā

then that praised goddess, whose inner being knows no blinking, having fashioned by her maya, of her own will, a shadow-self of herself,

पार्श्वेऽथ प्रेयसीं तत्र स्थापयित्वा बलादिव । सखीभिरावृता हृष्टा शुद्धैः पूजाजपादिभिः

pārśve'tha preyasīṁ tatra sthāpayitvā balādiva sakhībhirāvṛtā hṛṣṭā śuddhaiḥ pūjājapādibhiḥ

placed that beloved shadow-image at her own side as though by force, and then, surrounded by her rejoicing friends, through pure worship, recitation and the rest,

स्तवैर्भक्त्या प्रणामैश्च कृपयाविरभूत्तदा । हेमचंपकवर्णाभा विचित्राभरणोज्ज्वला

stavairbhaktyā praṇāmaiśca kṛpayāvirabhūttadā hemacaṁpakavarṇābhā vicitrābharaṇojjvalā

with hymns, devotion, and prostrations, out of grace, she then appeared — of the hue of molten gold and champaka, radiant with wondrous ornaments,

अंगप्रत्यंगलावण्य लालित्य मधुराकृतिः । निष्कलंक शरत्पूर्णकलानाथ शुभानना

aṁgapratyaṁgalāvaṇya lālitya madhurākṛtiḥ niṣkalaṁka śaratpūrṇakalānātha śubhānanā

her limbs and every part radiant with loveliness and grace, of sweet form, spotless as the full autumn moon, her face auspicious,

स्निग्धमुग्धस्मितालोक जगत्त्रयमनोहरा । निजया प्रभयात्यंतं द्योतयंती दिशो दश

snigdhamugdhasmitāloka jagattrayamanoharā nijayā prabhayātyaṁtaṁ dyotayaṁtī diśo daśa

her glossy, innocent, smiling glance enchanting the three worlds, illuminating the ten directions exceedingly with her own radiance,

Verse 144 (padma.5.74.144)

अब्रवीदथ सा देवी वरदा भक्तवत्सला । देव्युवाच-। मत्सखीनां वचः सत्यं तेन त्वं मे प्रिया सखी

abravīdatha sā devī varadā bhaktavatsalā devyuvāca- matsakhīnāṁ vacaḥ satyaṁ tena tvaṁ me priyā sakhī

then that boon-bestowing goddess, kind to her devotees, spoke. The Goddess said: "The word of my friends is true; therefore you are my dear friend."

Verse 145 (padma.5.74.145)

समुत्तिष्ठ समागच्छ कामं ते साधयाम्यहम् । अर्जुनी सा वचो देव्याः श्रुत्वा चात्ममनीषितम्

samuttiṣṭha samāgaccha kāmaṁ te sādhayāmyaham arjunī sā vaco devyāḥ śrutvā cātmamanīṣitam

"Rise up, come to me; I shall accomplish your desire." That Arjuni, hearing the goddess's words and her own intent,

Verse 146 (padma.5.74.146)

पुलकांकुरमुग्धांगी बाष्पाकुलविलोचना । पपात चरणे देव्याः पुनश्च प्रेमविह्वला

pulakāṁkuramugdhāṁgī bāṣpākulavilocanā papāta caraṇe devyāḥ punaśca premavihvalā

her innocent limbs bristling with rapture, her eyes clouded with tears, fell again at the goddess's feet, overwhelmed with love.

Verse 147 (padma.5.74.147)

ततः प्रियंवदां देवीं समुवाच सखीमिमाम् । पाणौ गृहीत्वा मत्संगे समाश्वास्य समानय

tataḥ priyaṁvadāṁ devīṁ samuvāca sakhīmimām pāṇau gṛhītvā matsaṁge samāśvāsya samānaya

Then she spoke to her sweet-voiced friend, Priyamvada: "Take her by the hand, console her, and bring her to me."

Verse 148 (padma.5.74.148)

ततः प्रियंवदा देव्या आज्ञया जातसंभ्रमा । तां तथैव समादाय संगे देव्या जगाम ह

tataḥ priyaṁvadā devyā ājñayā jātasaṁbhramā tāṁ tathaiva samādāya saṁge devyā jagāma ha

Then Priyamvada, at the goddess's command, filled with agitation, taking her thus, went along with the goddess.

Verse 149 (padma.5.74.149)

गत्वोत्तरसरस्तीरे स्नापयित्वा विधानतः । संकल्पादिकपूर्वं तु पूजयित्वा यथाविधि

gatvottarasarastīre snāpayitvā vidhānataḥ saṁkalpādikapūrvaṁ tu pūjayitvā yathāvidhi

Having gone to the bank of the northern lake, having duly bathed her, after the preliminary vows and the rest, having worshipped her according to rule,

श्रीगोकुलकलानाथमंत्रं तच्च सुसिद्धिदम् । ग्राहयामास तां देवी कृपया हरिवल्लभा

śrīgokulakalānāthamaṁtraṁ tacca susiddhidam grāhayāmāsa tāṁ devī kṛpayā harivallabhā

the goddess, beloved of Hari, out of compassion, had her receive the mantra of the Lord of Arts of Shri Gokula, which grants perfect accomplishment,

व्रतं गोकुलनाथाख्यं पूर्वं मोहनभूषितम् । सर्वसिद्धिप्रदं मंत्रं सर्वतंत्रेषु गोपितम्

vrataṁ gokulanāthākhyaṁ pūrvaṁ mohanabhūṣitam sarvasiddhipradaṁ maṁtraṁ sarvataṁtreṣu gopitam

the vow named after the Lord of Gokula, adorned formerly with enchantment, the mantra that bestows every accomplishment, hidden in every tantra —

Verse 152 (padma.5.74.152)

गोविंदेरितविज्ञासौ ददौ भक्तिमचंचलाम् । ध्यानं च कथितं तस्यै मंत्रराजं च मोहनम्

goviṁderitavijñāsau dadau bhaktimacaṁcalām dhyānaṁ ca kathitaṁ tasyai maṁtrarājaṁ ca mohanam

inspired by Govinda's own desire to know, she gave her unwavering devotion. And the meditation was told to her, and the enchanting king of mantras,

Verse 153 (padma.5.74.153)

उक्तं च मोहने तंत्रे स्मृतिरप्यस्य सिद्धिदा । नीलोत्पलदलश्यामं नानालंकारभूषितम्

uktaṁ ca mohane taṁtre smṛtirapyasya siddhidā nīlotpaladalaśyāmaṁ nānālaṁkārabhūṣitam

and it is declared in the Mohana Tantra that even remembrance of this grants accomplishment: dark as a blue-lotus petal, adorned with manifold ornaments,

कोटिकंदर्पलावण्यं ध्यायेद्रासरसाकुलम् । प्रियंवदामुवाचेदं रहस्यं पावनेच्छया

koṭikaṁdarpalāvaṇyaṁ dhyāyedrāsarasākulam priyaṁvadāmuvācedaṁ rahasyaṁ pāvanecchayā

of a beauty like a myriad Kamadevas — one should meditate upon him absorbed in the sweetness of the rasa dance. She spoke this secret to Priyamvada, wishing to purify her:

श्रीराधिकोवाच-। अस्या यावद्भवेत्पूर्णं पुरश्चरणमुत्तमम् । तावद्धि पालयैनां त्वं सावधाना सहालिभिः

śrīrādhikovāca- asyā yāvadbhavetpūrṇaṁ puraścaraṇamuttamam tāvaddhi pālayaināṁ tvaṁ sāvadhānā sahālibhiḥ

Shri Radhika said: "As long as her preliminary practice remains incomplete, so long you must guard her, remaining watchful together with her friends."

इत्युक्त्वा सा ययौ कृष्णपादांबुरुहसन्निधिम् । छायामात्मभवामात्मप्रेयसीनां निधाय च

ityuktvā sā yayau kṛṣṇapādāṁburuhasannidhim chāyāmātmabhavāmātmapreyasīnāṁ nidhāya ca

Having said this, she went to the presence of Krishna's lotus feet, having placed her own shadow-self born of herself, made to look like her own beloved,

तस्थौ तत्र यथापूर्वं राधिका कृष्णवल्लभा । अत्र प्रियंवदादेशात्पद्ममष्टदलं शुभम्

tasthau tatra yathāpūrvaṁ rādhikā kṛṣṇavallabhā atra priyaṁvadādeśātpadmamaṣṭadalaṁ śubham

and remained there as before, Radhika, Krishna's beloved. Here, by Priyamvada's instruction, an auspicious eight-petaled lotus,

गोरोचनाभिर्निर्माय कुंकुमेनापि चंदनैः । एभिर्नानाविधैर्द्रव्यैः संमिश्रैः सिद्धिदायकम्

gorocanābhirnirmāya kuṁkumenāpi caṁdanaiḥ ebhirnānāvidhairdravyaiḥ saṁmiśraiḥ siddhidāyakam

having drawn it with gorochana pigment, together with saffron and sandal, mixed with these various substances, bestowing accomplishment,

लिखित्वा यंत्रराजं च शुद्धं मंत्रं तमद्भुतम् । कृत्वा न्यासादिकं पाद्यमर्घ्यं चापि यथाविधि

likhitvā yaṁtrarājaṁ ca śuddhaṁ maṁtraṁ tamadbhutam kṛtvā nyāsādikaṁ pādyamarghyaṁ cāpi yathāvidhi

having inscribed the king of yantras and that wondrous, pure mantra, having performed the placing of hands and the offering-water according to rule,

his sidelong glance smiling, rippling with ever-deepening feeling, spoke to the goddess Radhika: "Bring her here at once."

आज्ञप्ता चैव सा देवी प्रस्थाप्य शारदां सखीम् । तामानिनाय सहसा पुरोवासुरसात्मनः

ājñaptā caiva sā devī prasthāpya śāradāṁ sakhīm tāmānināya sahasā purovāsurasātmanaḥ

Commanded thus, the goddess, sending forth her friend Sharada, brought her at once before the Self of the immortal ones.

श्रीकृष्णस्य पुरस्तात्सा समेत्य प्रेमविह्वला । पपात कांचनीभूमौ पश्यंती सर्वमद्भुतम्

śrīkṛṣṇasya purastātsā sametya premavihvalā papāta kāṁcanībhūmau paśyaṁtī sarvamadbhutam

Coming before Shri Krishna, overwhelmed with love, she fell upon the golden ground, beholding everything as a wonder.

कृच्छ्रात्कथंचिदुत्थाय शनैरुन्मील्य लोचने । स्वेदांभः पुलकोत्कंप भावभाराकुलासती

kṛcchrātkathaṁcidutthāya śanairunmīlya locane svedāṁbhaḥ pulakotkaṁpa bhāvabhārākulāsatī

With great difficulty somehow rising, slowly opening her eyes, drenched with sweat, thrilled with rapture, that virtuous one, overwhelmed with the weight of feeling,

ददर्श प्रथमं तत्र स्थलं चित्रं मनोरमम् । ततः कल्पतरुस्तत्र लसन्मरकतच्छदः

dadarśa prathamaṁ tatra sthalaṁ citraṁ manoramam tataḥ kalpatarustatra lasanmarakatacchadaḥ

first beheld there a wondrous, enchanting place. Then, there, a wish-fulfilling tree, its leaves gleaming emerald,

प्रवालपल्लवैर्युक्तः कोमलो हेमदंडकः । स्फटिकप्रवालमूलश्च कामदः कामसंपदाम्

furnished with coral shoots, tender, with a golden trunk, its base of crystal and coral, granting desires, the very wealth of desire,

प्रार्थकाभीष्टफलदस्तस्याधो रत्नमंदिरम् । रत्नसिंहासनं तत्र तत्राष्टदलपद्मकम्

prārthakābhīṣṭaphaladastasyādho ratnamaṁdiram ratnasiṁhāsanaṁ tatra tatrāṣṭadalapadmakam

bestowing the desired fruit to those who ask; beneath it a jeweled temple, there a jeweled throne, and there an eight-petaled lotus.

शंखपद्मनिधी तत्र स व्यापसव्यसंस्थितौ । चतुर्दिक्षु यथा स्थानं सहिताः कामधेनवः

resounding with the sweet notes of doves, mynahs, and parrots, and with the sweet cries of other birds too,

his forehead resplendent with a wondrous, expansive tilaka, his lovely nose like the beak of the lord of moths for sesame flowers,

his lovely bimba-red lips, Kama himself lit up by his gentle smile, his throat-ornament enchanting, like a garland of forest flowers,

his chest gleaming with a pearl necklace, adorned with the Kaustubha jewel, marked with Shrivatsa, his knee-length arms enchanting,

his deep navel, most beautiful in the very middle of his form, his knees like the round trunk of a fine tree, not too far apart, lovely,

kaṁkaṇāṁgadamañjīrairbhūṣitaṁ bhūṣaṇaiḥ paraiḥ pītāṁśukalayāviṣṭa nitaṁbaghaṭanāyakam

adorned with bangles, armlets, and anklets and other ornaments, his hips clothed in the flow of yellow silk, the very lord of that seat,

लावण्यैरपि सौंदर्यजितकोटिमनोभवम् । वेणुप्रवर्त्तितैर्गीतरागैरपि मनोहरैः

lāvaṇyairapi sauṁdaryajitakoṭimanobhavam veṇupravarttitairgītarāgairapi manoharaiḥ

surpassing a myriad Kamadevas in beauty and grace, enchanting too with the melodies set going by his flute,

मोहयंतं सुखांभोधौ मज्जयंतं जगत्त्रयम् । प्रत्यंगमदनावेशधरं रासरसालसम्

bewitching, immersing the three worlds in the ocean of joy, bearing in every limb the very onset of passion, languid with the sweetness of the rasa dance,

अन्यत्क्रीडाभवं यद्यत्तत्सर्वं च पृथक्पृथक् । रसालं विविधं यंत्रं कलयंतीभिरादरात्

anyatkrīḍābhavaṁ yadyattatsarvaṁ ca pṛthakpṛthak rasālaṁ vividhaṁ yaṁtraṁ kalayaṁtībhirādarāt

and whatever else pertains to play, all of it, item by item, sweetly, with manifold devices, tending it with reverence,

samālokyārjunī yāsau madanāveśavihvalā tatastāṁ ca tathā jñātvā hṛṣīkeśo'pi sarvavit

beholding all this, that Arjuni became overwhelmed with the onset of passion. Then, knowing her thus, Hrishikesha too, the all-knowing,

तस्याः पाणिं गृहीत्वैव सर्वक्रीडावनांतरे । यथाकामं रहो रेमे महायोगेश्वरो विभुः

tasyāḥ pāṇiṁ gṛhītvaiva sarvakrīḍāvanāṁtare yathākāmaṁ raho reme mahāyogeśvaro vibhuḥ

taking her by the hand, in the midst of all that playground, sported with her in private as he wished, that great lord of yoga.

ततस्तस्याः स्कंधदेशे प्रदत्तभुजपल्लवः । आगत्य शारदां प्राह पश्चिमेऽस्मिन्सरोवरे

tatastasyāḥ skaṁdhadeśe pradattabhujapallavaḥ āgatya śāradāṁ prāha paścime'sminsarovare

Then, his creeper-like arm resting upon her shoulder, he came and said to Sharada: "In this western lake,"

"quickly bathe this slender-limbed, gently-smiling one, wearied from play." Then the goddess Sharada, in that lake of play,

स्नानं कुर्वित्युवाचैनां सा च श्रांता तथाकरोत् । जलाभ्यंतरमाप्तासौ पुनरर्जुनतां गतः

snānaṁ kurvityuvācaināṁ sā ca śrāṁtā tathākarot jalābhyaṁtaramāptāsau punararjunatāṁ gataḥ

told her to bathe, and she, being weary, did so. Having entered within the water, she again became Arjuna,

उत्तस्थौ यत्र देवेशः श्रीमद्वैकुंठनायकः । दृष्ट्वा तमर्जुनं कृष्णो विषण्णं भग्नमानसम्

uttasthau yatra deveśaḥ śrīmadvaikuṁṭhanāyakaḥ dṛṣṭvā tamarjunaṁ kṛṣṇo viṣaṇṇaṁ bhagnamānasam

rising up where the glorious master of Vaikuntha, the Lord of gods, had been. Seeing that Arjuna, dejected, his mind shattered, Krishna,

मायया पाणिना स्पृष्ट्वा प्रकृतं विदधे पुनः । श्रीकृष्ण उवाच-। धनंजय त्वामाशंसे भवान्प्रियसखो मम

māyayā pāṇinā spṛṣṭvā prakṛtaṁ vidadhe punaḥ śrīkṛṣṇa uvāca- dhanaṁjaya tvāmāśaṁse bhavānpriyasakho mama

touching him with his hand through maya, restored him to his natural state. Shri Krishna said: "Dhananjaya, I esteem you; you are my beloved friend."

त्वत्समो नास्ति मे कोपि रहोवेत्ता जगत्त्रये । यद्रहस्यं त्वया पृष्टमनुभूतं च तत्पुनः

tvatsamo nāsti me kopi rahovettā jagattraye yadrahasyaṁ tvayā pṛṣṭamanubhūtaṁ ca tatpunaḥ

"There is no one equal to you, a knower of secrets in the three worlds. This secret which you asked of me, and which you have now experienced,"

कथ्यते यदि तत्कस्मै शपसे मां तदार्जुन । सनत्कुमार उवाच-। इति प्रसादमासाद्य शपथैर्जातनिर्णयः

kathyate yadi tatkasmai śapase māṁ tadārjuna sanatkumāra uvāca- iti prasādamāsādya śapathairjātanirṇayaḥ

"if it is to be told to anyone — then you must swear an oath to me first, Arjuna." Sanatkumara said: "Having thus obtained his grace, having made a firm resolve through those very oaths,"

ययौ हृष्टमनास्तस्मात्स्वधामाद्भुतसंस्मृतिः । इति ते कथितं सर्वं रहो यद्गोचरं मम

yayau hṛṣṭamanāstasmātsvadhāmādbhutasaṁsmṛtiḥ iti te kathitaṁ sarvaṁ raho yadgocaraṁ mama

he went forth from there, glad at heart, with a wondrous memory of his own realm. "Thus have I told you all of that secret which is within my ken,"

गोविंदस्य तथा चास्मै कथने शपथस्तव । ईश्वर उवाच-। इति श्रुत्वा वचस्तस्य सिद्धिमौपगविर्गतः

goviṁdasya tathā cāsmai kathane śapathastava īśvara uvāca- iti śrutvā vacastasya siddhimaupagavirgataḥ

"and likewise of Govinda's — and in telling this to you, an oath is required of you too." Ishvara said: "Having heard his words, the son of Upagu attained accomplishment,"

Verse 201 (padma.5.74.201)

नरनारायणावासं वृंदारण्यमुपाव्रजत् । तत्रास्तेऽद्यापि कृष्णस्य नित्यलीलाविहारवित्

naranārāyaṇāvāsaṁ vṛṁdāraṇyamupāvrajat tatrāste'dyāpi kṛṣṇasya nityalīlāvihāravit

and went to the abode of Nara-Narayana, the forest of Vrinda. There he still dwells today, knowing the eternal sport-play of Krishna.

Verse 202 (padma.5.74.202)

नारदेनापिपृष्टोऽहं नाब्रवं तद्रहस्यकम् । प्राप्तं तथापि तेनेदं प्रकृतित्वमुपेत्यच

nāradenāpipṛṣṭo'haṁ nābravaṁ tadrahasyakam prāptaṁ tathāpi tenedaṁ prakṛtitvamupetyaca

Even when Narada asked me, I did not tell him that secret; yet he too attained it, having come to his own true nature.

Verse 203 (padma.5.74.203)

तुभ्यं यत्तु मया प्रोक्तं रहस्यं स्नेहकारणात् । तन्नकस्मैचिदाख्येयं त्वया भद्रे स्वयोनिवत्

tubhyaṁ yattu mayā proktaṁ rahasyaṁ snehakāraṇāt tannakasmaicidākhyeyaṁ tvayā bhadre svayonivat

That which I have told you, out of affection — that must not be revealed to anyone else, O gracious one, as if it were your own kin.

इमं श्रीभगवद्भक्तमहिमाध्यायमद्भुतम् । यः पठेच्छृणुयाद्वापि स रतिं विंदते हरौ

imaṁ śrībhagavadbhaktamahimādhyāyamadbhutam yaḥ paṭhecchṛṇuyādvāpi sa ratiṁ viṁdate harau

Whoever reads this wondrous chapter on the glory of the Lord's devotee, or hears it, attains loving devotion to Hari.
