The Rules of Tilaka and Related Observances
Verse 1 (padma.5.79.1)
ईश्वर उवाच- शालग्रामे मणौयंत्रे मंडले प्रतिमासु च । नित्यं तु श्रीहरेः पूजा केवले भवनेन तु
īśvara uvāca- śālagrāme maṇauyaṁtre maṁḍale pratimāsu ca nityaṁ tu śrīhareḥ pūjā kevale bhavanena tu
Ishvara said: "The worship of Shri Hari may be eternally performed in the Shaligrama stone, in a gem-yantra, in a mandala, and in images — or indeed through a temple building alone."
Verse 2 (padma.5.79.2)
गंडक्यामेकदेशे तु शालग्रामस्थलं महत् । पाषाणं तद्भवं पातु शालग्राममिति स्थितम्
gaṁḍakyāmekadeśe tu śālagrāmasthalaṁ mahat pāṣāṇaṁ tadbhavaṁ pātu śālagrāmamiti sthitam
"In one region of the Gandaki is the great tract called Shaligrama; may the stone born there protect us — it is known as 'Shaligrama'."
Verse 3 (padma.5.79.3)
शालग्रामशिलास्पर्शात्कोटिजन्माघनाशनम् । किं पुनः पूजनं तत्र हरेः सांनिध्यकारणम्
śālagrāmaśilāsparśātkoṭijanmāghanāśanam kiṁ punaḥ pūjanaṁ tatra hareḥ sāṁnidhyakāraṇam
"From the mere touch of a Shaligrama stone, the sin of a myriad births is destroyed; how much more, then, does worship there become the very cause of Hari's presence!"
Verse 4 (padma.5.79.4)
शालग्रामैकयजनाच्छतलिंगीफलं लभेत् । बहुभिर्जन्मभिः पुण्यैर्यदिकृष्णशिलां लभेत्
śālagrāmaikayajanācchataliṁgīphalaṁ labhet bahubhirjanmabhiḥ puṇyairyadikṛṣṇaśilāṁ labhet
"From worship of a single Shaligrama, one obtains the fruit of a hundred lingas; only through the merit of many births does one obtain a Krishna-shila."
Verse 5 (padma.5.79.5)
गोष्पदेन च चिह्नेन जनुस्तेन समाप्यते । आदौ शिलां परीक्षेत स्निग्धां श्रेष्ठां च मेचकाम्
goṣpadena ca cihnena janustena samāpyate ādau śilāṁ parīkṣeta snigdhāṁ śreṣṭhāṁ ca mecakām
"By the mark of a cow's hoof-print, one's cycle of birth is completed. First one should examine the stone — smooth, excellent, and of deep-black hue."
Verse 6 (padma.5.79.6)
आकृष्णा मध्यमा प्रोक्ता मिश्रा मिश्रफलप्रदा । सदा काष्ठे स्थितो वह्निर्मथनेन प्रकाश्यते
ākṛṣṇā madhyamā proktā miśrā miśraphalapradā sadā kāṣṭhe sthito vahnirmathanena prakāśyate
"A blackish one is said to be middling; a mixed one gives mixed results. Just as fire, always present in wood, is revealed by churning,"
Verse 7 (padma.5.79.7)
यथा तथा हरिर्व्यापी शालग्रामे प्रतीयते । प्रत्यहं द्वादशशिलाः शालग्रामस्य योऽर्चयेत्
yathā tathā harirvyāpī śālagrāme pratīyate pratyahaṁ dvādaśaśilāḥ śālagrāmasya yo'rcayet
"so too Hari, all-pervading, is made manifest in the Shaligrama. He who daily worships the twelve stones of the Shaligrama,"
Verse 8 (padma.5.79.8)
द्वारवत्याः शिलायुक्ताः स वैकुंठे महीयते । शालग्रामशिलायां तु गह्वरं लक्षते नरः
dvāravatyāḥ śilāyuktāḥ sa vaikuṁṭhe mahīyate śālagrāmaśilāyāṁ tu gahvaraṁ lakṣate naraḥ
"along with the stones of Dvaravati, is glorified in Vaikuntha. In the Shaligrama stone, a man who beholds the cavity-mark,"
Verse 9 (padma.5.79.9)
पितरस्तस्य तिष्ठंति तृप्ताः कल्पांतकं दिवि । वैकुंठभवनं तत्र यत्र द्वारावती शिला
pitarastasya tiṣṭhaṁti tṛptāḥ kalpāṁtakaṁ divi vaikuṁṭhabhavanaṁ tatra yatra dvārāvatī śilā
"his ancestors abide, satisfied, in heaven until the end of the kalpa. That is the very mansion of Vaikuntha, wherever a Dvaravati stone is present."
Verse 10 (padma.5.79.10)
मृतो विष्णुपुरं याति तत्तीर्थं योजनत्रयम् । जपः पूजा च होमश्च सर्वं कोटिगुणं भवेत्
mṛto viṣṇupuraṁ yāti tattīrthaṁ yojanatrayam japaḥ pūjā ca homaśca sarvaṁ koṭiguṇaṁ bhavet
"At death he goes to Vishnu's city; three yojanas around it is a holy place; recitation, worship, and fire-offering there all become a myriad-fold more fruitful."
Verse 11 (padma.5.79.11)
मनस्कामसमाभीष्टं क्रोशमात्रं न संशयः । कीटकोऽपि मृतिं याति वैकुंठभवनं यतः
manaskāmasamābhīṣṭaṁ krośamātraṁ na saṁśayaḥ kīṭako'pi mṛtiṁ yāti vaikuṁṭhabhavanaṁ yataḥ
"Even a mere krosha's distance grants the desire held in the heart, without doubt. Even an insect, dying there, goes to the mansion of Vaikuntha."
Verse 12 (padma.5.79.12)
शालग्रामशिलायां यो मूल्यमुद्घाटयेन्नरः । विक्रेता चानुमंता च यः परीक्षानुमोदकः
śālagrāmaśilāyāṁ yo mūlyamudghāṭayennaraḥ vikretā cānumaṁtā ca yaḥ parīkṣānumodakaḥ
"Whatever man sets a price upon a Shaligrama stone — the seller, and he who approves it, and he who examines and endorses it —"
Verse 13 (padma.5.79.13)
सर्वे ते नरकं यांति यावत्सूर्यश्च संप्लवः । अतस्तद्वर्जयेद्देवि चक्रक्रयणविक्रयम्
sarve te narakaṁ yāṁti yāvatsūryaśca saṁplavaḥ atastadvarjayeddevi cakrakrayaṇavikrayam
"all of them go to hell for as long as the sun and the deluge last. Therefore, O goddess, one should avoid the buying and selling of the Chakra-stone."
Verse 14 (padma.5.79.14)
शालग्रामोद्भवो देवो यो देवो द्वारकोद्भवः । उभयोः संगमो यत्र मुक्तिस्तत्र न संशयः
śālagrāmodbhavo devo yo devo dvārakodbhavaḥ ubhayoḥ saṁgamo yatra muktistatra na saṁśayaḥ
"The god born of the Shaligrama, and the god born of Dvaraka — where the two meet together, there liberation is certain, without doubt."
Verse 15 (padma.5.79.15)
द्वारकोद्भवचक्राढ्यो बहुचक्रेण चिह्नितः । चक्रासनशिलाकारचित्स्वरूपो निरंजनः
dvārakodbhavacakrāḍhyo bahucakreṇa cihnitaḥ cakrāsanaśilākāracitsvarūpo niraṁjanaḥ
"Rich with the chakra born of Dvaraka, marked with many chakras, of the very nature of consciousness in the shape of a chakra-throne, spotless —"
Verse 16 (padma.5.79.16)
नमोऽस्त्वोंकाररूपाय सदानंदस्वरूपिणे । शालग्राममहाभाग भक्तस्यानुग्रहं कुरु
namo'stvoṁkārarūpāya sadānaṁdasvarūpiṇe śālagrāmamahābhāga bhaktasyānugrahaṁ kuru
"Salutation to you, of the form of Om, ever of the nature of bliss. O great Shaligrama, show grace upon your devotee."
Verse 17 (padma.5.79.17)
तवानुग्रहकामस्य ऋणग्रस्तस्य मे प्रभो । अतः परं प्रवक्ष्यामि तिलकस्य विधिं मुदा
tavānugrahakāmasya ṛṇagrastasya me prabho ataḥ paraṁ pravakṣyāmi tilakasya vidhiṁ mudā
"'Upon me, who desires your grace and am bound by debt.' O Lord — hereafter I shall now joyfully declare the rule of the tilaka,"
Verse 18 (padma.5.79.18)
यच्छ्रुत्वा मानवाः सर्वे विष्णुसारूप्यमाप्नुयुः । ललाटे केशवं विद्यात्कंठे श्रीपुरुषोत्तमम्
yacchrutvā mānavāḥ sarve viṣṇusārūpyamāpnuyuḥ lalāṭe keśavaṁ vidyātkaṁṭhe śrīpuruṣottamam
"hearing which all men attain equality of form with Vishnu. On the forehead one should know Keshava; on the throat, Shri Purushottama;"
Verse 19 (padma.5.79.19)
नाभौ नारायणं देवं वैकुंठं हृदये तथा । दामोदरं वामपार्श्वे दक्षिणे च त्रिविक्रमम्
nābhau nārāyaṇaṁ devaṁ vaikuṁṭhaṁ hṛdaye tathā dāmodaraṁ vāmapārśve dakṣiṇe ca trivikramam
"on the navel, the god Narayana; on the heart, likewise Vaikuntha; Damodara on the left side, and Trivikrama on the right;"
Verse 20 (padma.5.79.20)
मूर्ध्नि चैव हृषीकेशं पद्मनाभं च पृष्ठतः । कर्णयोर्यमुनां गंगां बाह्वोः कृष्णं हरिं तथा
mūrdhni caiva hṛṣīkeśaṁ padmanābhaṁ ca pṛṣṭhataḥ karṇayoryamunāṁ gaṁgāṁ bāhvoḥ kṛṣṇaṁ hariṁ tathā
"on the crown of the head, Hrishikesha; and Padmanabha on the back; on the two ears, the Yamuna and the Ganga; on the two arms, Krishna and Hari;"
Verse 21 (padma.5.79.21)
यथास्थानेषु तुष्यंति देवता द्वादश स्मृताः । द्वादशैतानि नामानि कर्तव्ये तिलके पठेत्
yathāsthāneṣu tuṣyaṁti devatā dvādaśa smṛtāḥ dvādaśaitāni nāmāni kartavye tilake paṭhet
"in their proper places, these twelve deities, so remembered, are pleased. These twelve names should be recited while applying the tilaka."
Verse 22 (padma.5.79.22)
सर्वपापविशुद्धात्मा विष्णुलोकं स गच्छति । ऊर्द्ध्वपुंड्रमूर्द्ध्वरेखं ललाटे यस्य दृश्यते
sarvapāpaviśuddhātmā viṣṇulokaṁ sa gacchati ūrddhvapuṁḍramūrddhvarekhaṁ lalāṭe yasya dṛśyate
"His soul purified of all sin, he goes to Vishnu's realm. He on whose forehead an upward tilaka-mark with an upward line is seen,"
Verse 23 (padma.5.79.23)
चांडालोऽपि स शुद्धात्मा पूज्य एव न संशयः । यस्योर्द्ध्वपुंड्रं दृश्येत न ललाटे नरस्य हि
cāṁḍālo'pi sa śuddhātmā pūjya eva na saṁśayaḥ yasyorddhvapuṁḍraṁ dṛśyeta na lalāṭe narasya hi
"even if a chandala, is of pure soul and worthy of worship indeed — of this there is no doubt. He on whose forehead a man's urdhva-pundra is not seen —"
Verse 24 (padma.5.79.24)
तद्दर्शनं न कर्त्तव्यं दृष्ट्वा सूर्यं निरीक्षयेत् । त्रिपुंड्रं यस्य विप्रस्य ऊर्द्ध्वपुंड्रं न दृश्यते
taddarśanaṁ na karttavyaṁ dṛṣṭvā sūryaṁ nirīkṣayet tripuṁḍraṁ yasya viprasya ūrddhvapuṁḍraṁ na dṛśyate
"one should not look upon his sight; having seen him, one should gaze upon the sun. That brahmin on whose brow the triple mark, the urdhva-pundra, is not seen —"
Verse 25 (padma.5.79.25)
तं दृष्ट्वाप्यथवा स्पृष्ट्वा सचैलं स्नानमाचरेत् । सांतरालं प्रकर्त्तव्यं पुंड्रं हरिपदाकृति
taṁ dṛṣṭvāpyathavā spṛṣṭvā sacailaṁ snānamācaret sāṁtarālaṁ prakarttavyaṁ puṁḍraṁ haripadākṛti
"having seen or even touched him, one should bathe with one's clothes on. One should apply the tilaka with a gap in the middle, in the shape of Hari's foot."
Verse 26 (padma.5.79.26)
निरंतरालं यः कुर्यादूर्द्ध्वपुंड्रं द्विजाधमः । ललाटे तस्य सततं शुनःपादो न संशयः
niraṁtarālaṁ yaḥ kuryādūrddhvapuṁḍraṁ dvijādhamaḥ lalāṭe tasya satataṁ śunaḥpādo na saṁśayaḥ
"That base twice-born who applies the urdhva-pundra without any gap — on his forehead there is ever, without doubt, the mark of a dog's paw."
Verse 27 (padma.5.79.27)
नासादिकेशपर्यंतमूर्द्ध्वपुंड्रं सुशोभनम् । मध्ये छिद्रसमायुक्तं तं विद्याद्धरिमंदिरम्
nāsādikeśaparyaṁtamūrddhvapuṁḍraṁ suśobhanam madhye chidrasamāyuktaṁ taṁ vidyāddharimaṁdiram
"The lovely urdhva-pundra, from the nose up to the hairline, joined with a gap in the middle — that one should know to be Hari's own temple."
Verse 28 (padma.5.79.28)
वामभागे स्थितो ब्रह्मा दक्षिणे तु सदाशिवः । मध्ये विष्णुं विजानीयात्तस्मान्मध्यं न लेपयेत्
vāmabhāge sthito brahmā dakṣiṇe tu sadāśivaḥ madhye viṣṇuṁ vijānīyāttasmānmadhyaṁ na lepayet
"On the left side dwells Brahma, and on the right, Sadashiva; in the middle one should know Vishnu — therefore one should never smear over the middle."
Verse 29 (padma.5.79.29)
वीक्ष्यादर्शे जले वापि यो विदध्यात्प्रयत्नतः । ऊर्द्ध्वपुंड्रं महाभागः सयाति परमां गतिम्
vīkṣyādarśe jale vāpi yo vidadhyātprayatnataḥ ūrddhvapuṁḍraṁ mahābhāgaḥ sayāti paramāṁ gatim
"He who, looking into a mirror or into water, applies the urdhva-pundra with careful effort — that greatly blessed one attains the supreme goal."
Verse 30 (padma.5.79.30)
अग्निरापश्च वेदाश्च चंद्रादित्यौ तथानिलः । विप्राणां नित्यमेते हि कर्णे तिष्ठंति दक्षिणे
agnirāpaśca vedāśca caṁdrādityau tathānilaḥ viprāṇāṁ nityamete hi karṇe tiṣṭhaṁti dakṣiṇe
"Fire, water, the Vedas, the moon and the sun, and likewise the wind — these ever dwell, for brahmins, in the right ear."
Verse 31 (padma.5.79.31)
गंगा च दक्षिणे श्रोत्रे नासिकायां हुताशनः । उभयोरपि संस्पर्शात्तत्क्षणादेव शुध्यति
gaṁgā ca dakṣiṇe śrotre nāsikāyāṁ hutāśanaḥ ubhayorapi saṁsparśāttatkṣaṇādeva śudhyati
"The Ganga dwells in the right ear, and the fire-god in the nose; from the touch of both together, one is purified in that very instant."
Verse 32 (padma.5.79.32)
कृत्वा चैवोदकं शंखे वैष्णवानां महात्मनाम् । तुलसीमिश्रितं दद्यात्पिबेन्मूर्ध्नाभिवंदयेत्
kṛtvā caivodakaṁ śaṁkhe vaiṣṇavānāṁ mahātmanām tulasīmiśritaṁ dadyātpibenmūrdhnābhivaṁdayet
"Having placed water in a conch belonging to great-souled Vaishnavas, mixed with tulasi, one should give it, drink it, and bow with one's head to it,"
Verse 33 (padma.5.79.33)
प्राश्नीयात्प्रोक्षयेद्देहं पुत्रमित्रपरिग्रहम् । विष्णोः पादोदकं पीतं कोटिजन्माघनाशनम्
prāśnīyātprokṣayeddehaṁ putramitraparigraham viṣṇoḥ pādodakaṁ pītaṁ koṭijanmāghanāśanam
"sip it, and sprinkle one's body, one's sons, friends, and dependents with it. The water that has washed Vishnu's feet, once drunk, destroys the sin of a myriad births;"
Verse 34 (padma.5.79.34)
तदेवाष्टगुणं पापं भूमौ बिंदुनिपातनात् । जलशंखं करे कृत्वा स्तुत्वा नत्वा प्रदक्षिणम्
tadevāṣṭaguṇaṁ pāpaṁ bhūmau biṁdunipātanāt jalaśaṁkhaṁ kare kṛtvā stutvā natvā pradakṣiṇam
"that same sin, eightfold, is destroyed by letting fall a drop upon the earth. Having taken water in a conch in one's hand, having praised, bowed, and circumambulated,"
Verse 35 (padma.5.79.35)
सततं धार्यते वारि तेनाप्तं जन्मनः फलम् । शंखो यस्य गृहे नास्ति घंटा वा गरुडान्विता
satataṁ dhāryate vāri tenāptaṁ janmanaḥ phalam śaṁkho yasya gṛhe nāsti ghaṁṭā vā garuḍānvitā
"one who continually bears such water obtains thereby the fruit of one's whole birth. He in whose house there is no conch, or no bell together with a Garuda-emblem,"
Verse 36 (padma.5.79.36)
पुरतो वासुदेवस्य न स भागवतः कलौ । यानैर्वा पादुकाभिर्वा यानं भगवतो गृहे
purato vāsudevasya na sa bhāgavataḥ kalau yānairvā pādukābhirvā yānaṁ bhagavato gṛhe
"before Vasudeva — he is no true Bhagavata in this Kali age. Riding in a vehicle or wearing sandals when going in the house of the Lord,"
Verse 37 (padma.5.79.37)
देवोत्सवेष्वसेवा च अप्रणामस्तदग्रतः । उच्छिष्टे चैव चाशौचे भगवद्वंदनादिकम्
devotsaveṣvasevā ca apraṇāmastadagrataḥ ucchiṣṭe caiva cāśauce bhagavadvaṁdanādikam
"non-attendance at the god's festivals, and failure to bow before him; performing devotion to the Lord amid leftover food or in a state of impurity —"
Verse 38 (padma.5.79.38)
एकहस्तप्रणामश्च तत्पुरस्तात्प्रदक्षिणम् । पादप्रसारणं चाग्रे तथा पर्यंकसेवनम्
ekahastapraṇāmaśca tatpurastātpradakṣiṇam pādaprasāraṇaṁ cāgre tathā paryaṁkasevanam
"bowing with only one hand; circumambulating in front of him; stretching the feet forward before him; likewise using a couch for his service,"
Verse 39 (padma.5.79.39)
शयनं भक्षणं चापि मिथ्याभाषणमेव च । उच्चैर्भाषामिथो जल्पो रोदनानि च विग्रहः
śayanaṁ bhakṣaṇaṁ cāpi mithyābhāṣaṇameva ca uccairbhāṣāmitho jalpo rodanāni ca vigrahaḥ
"sleeping and eating in his presence, and false speech; loud talk, idle chatter, weeping and quarreling,"
Verse 40 (padma.5.79.40)
निग्रहानुग्रहौ चैव स्त्रीषु च क्रूरभाषणम् । केवलावरणं चैव परनिंदापरस्तुतिः
nigrahānugrahau caiva strīṣu ca krūrabhāṣaṇam kevalāvaraṇaṁ caiva paraniṁdāparastutiḥ
"punishing and rewarding others, and harsh speech toward women; mere concealment, criticizing others, and praising oneself,"
Verse 41 (padma.5.79.41)
अश्लीलभाषणं चैव अधोवायुविमोक्षणम् । शक्तौ गौणोपचारश्च अनिवेदितभक्षणम्
aślīlabhāṣaṇaṁ caiva adhovāyuvimokṣaṇam śaktau gauṇopacāraśca aniveditabhakṣaṇam
"obscene speech, and releasing wind from below; using a lesser rite when capable of more, and eating without first offering,"
Verse 42 (padma.5.79.42)
तत्तत्कालोद्भवानां च फलादीनामनर्पणम् । विनियुक्तावशिष्टस्य प्रदानं व्यंजनस्य यत्
tattatkālodbhavānāṁ ca phalādīnāmanarpaṇam viniyuktāvaśiṣṭasya pradānaṁ vyaṁjanasya yat
"not offering the fruits and other produce arising in their season; giving away, as a leftover, food-dishes not properly assigned,"
Verse 43 (padma.5.79.43)
स्पष्टीकृत्याशनं चैव परनिंदा परस्तुतिः । गुरौ मौनं निजस्तोत्रं देवतानिंदनं तथा
spaṣṭīkṛtyāśanaṁ caiva paraniṁdā parastutiḥ gurau maunaṁ nijastotraṁ devatāniṁdanaṁ tathā
"eating openly announced, criticizing others, praising oneself; silence before the guru, self-praise, and likewise reviling the deity —"
Verse 44 (padma.5.79.44)
अपराधास्तथा विष्णोर्द्वात्रिंशत्परिकीर्तिताः
aparādhāstathā viṣṇordvātriṁśatparikīrtitāḥ
"thus thirty-two offenses against Vishnu are declared."
Verse 45 (padma.5.79.45)
अपराधसहस्राणि क्रियंतेऽहर्निशं मया । तवाहमिति मां मत्वा क्षमस्व मधुसूदन
aparādhasahasrāṇi kriyaṁte'harniśaṁ mayā tavāhamiti māṁ matvā kṣamasva madhusūdana
"'Thousands of offenses are committed by me, day and night; considering myself yours, forgive me, O Madhusudana.'"
Verse 46 (padma.5.79.46)
इति मंत्रं समुच्चार्य प्रणमेद्दंडवद्भुवि । अपराधसहस्राणि क्षमते सर्वदा हरिः
iti maṁtraṁ samuccārya praṇameddaṁḍavadbhuvi aparādhasahasrāṇi kṣamate sarvadā hariḥ
"Having recited this mantra, one should bow prostrate upon the ground. Hari ever forgives thousands of offenses."
Verse 47 (padma.5.79.47)
सायंप्रातर्द्विजातीनां श्रुत्युक्तमशनं तथा । विष्णुभक्तावशिष्टस्य दिनपापात्प्रमुच्यते
sāyaṁprātardvijātīnāṁ śrutyuktamaśanaṁ tathā viṣṇubhaktāvaśiṣṭasya dinapāpātpramucyate
"Eating, evening and morning, the food prescribed by the Shrutis for twice-born, the remnant left by Vishnu-devotees — one is freed from the day's sin thereby."
Verse 48 (padma.5.79.48)
अन्नं ब्रह्मा रसो विष्णुः खादयेन्मांसमुच्चरन् । एवं ज्ञात्वा तु यो भुंक्ते सोऽन्नदोषैर्न लिप्यते
annaṁ brahmā raso viṣṇuḥ khādayenmāṁsamuccaran evaṁ jñātvā tu yo bhuṁkte so'nnadoṣairna lipyate
"'Food is Brahma, its taste is Vishnu' — one should say this while eating. He who eats thus, knowing this, is untainted by the faults of food."
Verse 49 (padma.5.79.49)
अलाबुं वर्त्तुलाकारं मसूरं च सवल्कलम् । तालं शुक्लं च वृंताकं न खादेद्वैष्णवो नरः
alābuṁ varttulākāraṁ masūraṁ ca savalkalam tālaṁ śuklaṁ ca vṛṁtākaṁ na khādedvaiṣṇavo naraḥ
"A round bottle-gourd, lentils with their husks, palm-fruit, and white eggplant — a Vaishnava man should not eat."
Verse 50 (padma.5.79.50)
वटाश्वत्थार्कपत्रेषु कुंभी तिंदुकपत्रयोः । कोविदारे कदंबे च न खादेद्वैष्णवो नरः
vaṭāśvatthārkapatreṣu kuṁbhī tiṁdukapatrayoḥ kovidāre kadaṁbe ca na khādedvaiṣṇavo naraḥ
"On the leaves of banyan, peepal, and arka trees, of kumbhi and tinduka, of kovidara and kadamba — a Vaishnava man should not eat."
Verse 51 (padma.5.79.51)
श्रावणे वर्जयेच्छाकं दधि भाद्रपदे त्यजेत् । आश्विने मासि दुग्धं च कार्त्तिके चामिषं त्यजेत्
śrāvaṇe varjayecchākaṁ dadhi bhādrapade tyajet āśvine māsi dugdhaṁ ca kārttike cāmiṣaṁ tyajet
"In Shravana one should avoid greens; in Bhadrapada one should give up yogurt; in the month of Ashvina, milk; and in Kartika, one should give up flesh."

दग्धमन्नं तु जंबीरं यद्विष्णोरनिवेदितम् । बीजपूरं च शाकं चप्रत्यक्षलवणं तथा

"Burnt food, and citron fruit not offered to Vishnu; the bijapura fruit, greens, and unrefined salt taken directly —"

yadi daivācca bhuṁjīta tadā tannāma saṁsmaret haimaṁtikaṁ sitā svinnaṁ dhānyaṁ mudgāstilā yavāḥ
"if by fate one must eat such things, then one should remember his name. In the winter season, refined sugar, cooked grain, mung beans, sesame, barley,"

कलाप कंगु नीवाराः शाकं च हिलमोचिका । कालशाकं च वास्तूकं मूलकं रक्तकेतरत्

"kalapa, kangu, wild rice; greens, hilamochika; kala-shaka and vastuka greens, red radish, and no other,"

लवणे सिंधुसामुद्रे गव्ये च दधिसर्पिषी । पयोनुद्धृतसारं च पनसाम्रहरीतकी
lavaṇe siṁdhusāmudre gavye ca dadhisarpiṣī payonuddhṛtasāraṁ ca panasāmraharītakī
"sea-salt and rock-salt, cow-milk yogurt and ghee, milk with its essence not yet extracted, jackfruit, mango, myrobalan,"

पिप्पली जीरकं चैव नागरंगक तिंतिडी । कदलीलवली धात्री फलान्यगुडमैक्षवम्

"pippali pepper, cumin, orange, tamarind, plantain, lavali, amalaki fruits, unrefined sugar and sugarcane —"

अतैलपक्वं मुनयो हविष्यान्नं प्रचक्षते । तुलसीपत्रपुष्पाद्यैर्माल्यं वहति यो नरः
atailapakvaṁ munayo haviṣyānnaṁ pracakṣate tulasīpatrapuṣpādyairmālyaṁ vahati yo naraḥ
"these, if cooked without oil, the sages declare to be sanctified oblation-food. He who wears a garland made from tulasi leaves and flowers and the like,"

विष्णुं तमपि जानीयात्सत्यं सत्यं न संशयः । धात्रीवृक्षं समारोप्य विष्णुतुल्यो भवेन्नरः
viṣṇuṁ tamapi jānīyātsatyaṁ satyaṁ na saṁśayaḥ dhātrīvṛkṣaṁ samāropya viṣṇutulyo bhavennaraḥ
"should be known as Vishnu himself — truly, truly, without doubt. By planting an amalaki tree, a man becomes equal to Vishnu."

कुरुक्षेत्रं विजानीयात्सार्द्धं हस्तशतत्रयम् । तुलसीकाष्ठघटितै रुद्राक्षाकारकारितैः
kurukṣetraṁ vijānīyātsārddhaṁ hastaśatatrayam tulasīkāṣṭhaghaṭitai rudrākṣākārakāritaiḥ
"One should know this to equal the merit of Kurukshetra, three hundred and a half hastas in extent. With beads made of tulasi wood, fashioned in the shape of rudraksha,"

निर्मितां मालिकां कंठे निधायार्चनमारभेत् । तथामलकमालां च सम्यक्पुष्करमालिकाम्
nirmitāṁ mālikāṁ kaṁṭhe nidhāyārcanamārabhet tathāmalakamālāṁ ca samyakpuṣkaramālikām
"one should place the necklace made thus around one's neck and begin worship; and likewise a necklace of amalaki-beads, and a proper garland of lotus-seed beads."

कंठे मालां च यत्नेन धारयेद्विष्णुपूजकः । निर्माल्यं तुलसीमालां शिरस्यपि च धारयेत्
kaṁṭhe mālāṁ ca yatnena dhārayedviṣṇupūjakaḥ nirmālyaṁ tulasīmālāṁ śirasyapi ca dhārayet
"The worshipper of Vishnu should carefully wear a garland around the neck. The discarded tulasi garland-remnant should be worn even on the head."

निर्माल्यचंदनेनांगमंकयेत्तस्य नामभिः । ललाटे च गदा धार्या मूर्ध्नि चापं शरस्तथा
nirmālyacaṁdanenāṁgamaṁkayettasya nāmabhiḥ lalāṭe ca gadā dhāryā mūrdhni cāpaṁ śarastathā
"One should mark one's body with his names using the discarded sandal-paste offering. The mace should be worn on the forehead, the bow and arrow on the crown of the head,"

नंदकं चैव हृन्मध्ये शंखं चक्रं भुजद्वये । शंखचक्रान्वितो विप्रः श्मशाने म्रियते यदि
naṁdakaṁ caiva hṛnmadhye śaṁkhaṁ cakraṁ bhujadvaye śaṁkhacakrānvito vipraḥ śmaśāne mriyate yadi
"the Nandaka sword in the middle of the chest, and the conch and discus on the two arms. If a brahmin marked with the conch and discus dies in a cremation-ground,"

प्रयागे या गतिः प्रोक्ता सा गतिस्तस्य निश्चिता । यो धृत्वा तुलसीपत्रं शिरसा विष्णुतत्परः
prayāge yā gatiḥ proktā sā gatistasya niścitā yo dhṛtvā tulasīpatraṁ śirasā viṣṇutatparaḥ
"the destiny declared for one who dies at Prayaga is certain for him too. He who, bearing a tulasi leaf upon his head, devoted to Vishnu,"

करोति सर्वकार्याणि फलमाप्नोति चाक्षयम् । तुलसीकाष्ठमालाभिर्भूषितः कर्म आचरन्
karoti sarvakāryāṇi phalamāpnoti cākṣayam tulasīkāṣṭhamālābhirbhūṣitaḥ karma ācaran
"performs all his tasks, obtains an imperishable fruit. Adorned with garlands of tulasi wood, performing his ordinary deeds,"

पितॄणां देवतानां च कृतं कोटिगुणं भवेत् । निवेद्य केशवे मालां तुलसीकाष्ठनिर्मिताम्
pitṝṇāṁ devatānāṁ ca kṛtaṁ koṭiguṇaṁ bhavet nivedya keśave mālāṁ tulasīkāṣṭhanirmitām
"whatever is done for the ancestors and the gods becomes a myriad-fold more fruitful. Having offered to Keshava a garland made of tulasi wood,"

वहते यो नरो भक्त्या तस्य नश्यति पातकम् । पाद्यादिभिरथाभ्यर्च्य इमं मंत्रमुदीरयेत्
vahate yo naro bhaktyā tasya naśyati pātakam pādyādibhirathābhyarcya imaṁ maṁtramudīrayet
"the man who bears it with devotion — his sin is destroyed. Having worshipped with foot-water and the rest, one should recite this mantra:"

या दृष्टा निखिलाघसंघशमनी स्पृष्टा वपुः पावनी । रोगाणामभिवंदिता निरसनी सिक्तांतकत्रासिनी । प्रत्यासत्ति विधायिनी भगवतः कृष्णस्य संरोपिता । न्यस्ता तच्चरणे विमुक्तिफलदा तस्यै तुलस्यै नमः
yā dṛṣṭā nikhilāghasaṁghaśamanī spṛṣṭā vapuḥ pāvanī rogāṇāmabhivaṁditā nirasanī siktāṁtakatrāsinī pratyāsatti vidhāyinī bhagavataḥ kṛṣṇasya saṁropitā nyastā taccaraṇe vimuktiphaladā tasyai tulasyai namaḥ
"'She who, when seen, pacifies the whole mass of sin; whose very body, when touched, purifies; who, when reverenced, dispels all diseases; who terrifies Death himself when sprinkled; who brings one into nearness with the Lord; who is planted for the sake of glorious Krishna; who, when placed at his feet, bestows the fruit of liberation — to that Tulasi, salutation.'"
