Verse 1 (padma.5.80.1)

पार्वत्युवाच- घोरे कलियुगे प्राप्ते विषयग्राहसंकुले । पुत्रदारधनाद्यार्तैस्तत्कथं धार्यते विभो

pārvatyuvāca- ghore kaliyuge prāpte viṣayagrāhasaṁkule putradāradhanādyārtaistatkathaṁ dhāryate vibho

Parvati said: "In this terrible Kali Yuga that has come, thronged with the crocodile of sense-objects, afflicted by sons, wife, wealth and the like — how, O Lord, can one hold fast to dharma?"

Verse 2 (padma.5.80.2)

तदुपायं महादेव कथयस्व कृपानिधे । ईश्वर उवाच- हरेर्नाम हरेर्नाम हरेर्नामैव केवलम्

tadupāyaṁ mahādeva kathayasva kṛpānidhe īśvara uvāca- harernāma harernāma harernāmaiva kevalam

"Tell me that means, O Mahadeva, ocean of compassion." Ishvara said: "The name of Hari, the name of Hari, the name of Hari alone —"

Verse 3 (padma.5.80.3)

हरेराम हरेकृष्ण कृष्णकृष्णेति मंगलम् । एवं वदंति ये नित्यं न हि तान्बाधते कलि

harerāma harekṛṣṇa kṛṣṇakṛṣṇeti maṁgalam evaṁ vadaṁti ye nityaṁ na hi tānbādhate kali

"'Hare Rama, Hare Krishna, Krishna Krishna' — this auspicious chant. Those who ever speak thus, Kali indeed does not afflict them."

Verse 4 (padma.5.80.4)

अंतरांतरकर्माणि कृत्वा नामानि च स्मरेत् । कृष्णकृष्णेति कृष्णेति कृष्णेत्याह पुनः पुनः

aṁtarāṁtarakarmāṇi kṛtvā nāmāni ca smaret kṛṣṇakṛṣṇeti kṛṣṇeti kṛṣṇetyāha punaḥ punaḥ

"Performing one's ordinary duties amid it all, one should remember the names: 'Krishna, Krishna,' 'Krishna, Krishna' — saying it again and again."

Verse 5 (padma.5.80.5)

मन्नाम चैव त्वन्नाम योजयित्वा व्यतिक्रमात् । सोऽपि पापात्प्रमुच्येत तूलराशेरिवानलः

mannāma caiva tvannāma yojayitvā vyatikramāt so'pi pāpātpramucyeta tūlarāśerivānalaḥ

"Joining my name and your name together, even by mistake — even he is freed from sin, like a heap of cotton before fire."

Verse 6 (padma.5.80.6)

जयाद्येतत्त्वया वाप्यथवा श्रीशब्दपूर्वकम् । तच्च मे मंगलं नाम जपन्पापात्प्रमुच्यते

jayādyetattvayā vāpyathavā śrīśabdapūrvakam tacca me maṁgalaṁ nāma japanpāpātpramucyate

"'Jaya' and the like prefixed, or with the word 'Shri' before it — reciting that auspicious name of mine, one is freed from sin."

Verse 7 (padma.5.80.7)

दिवानिशि च संध्यायां सर्वकालेषु संस्मरेत् । अहर्निशं स्मरन्रामं कृष्णं पश्यति चक्षुषा

divāniśi ca saṁdhyāyāṁ sarvakāleṣu saṁsmaret aharniśaṁ smaranrāmaṁ kṛṣṇaṁ paśyati cakṣuṣā

"Day and night, and at twilight, at all times, one should remember it. Remembering Rama day and night, one sees Krishna with one's very eyes."

Verse 8 (padma.5.80.8)

अशुचिर्वा शुचिर्वापि सर्वकालेषु सर्वदा । नामसंस्मरणादेव संसारान्मुच्यते क्षणात्

aśucirvā śucirvāpi sarvakāleṣu sarvadā nāmasaṁsmaraṇādeva saṁsārānmucyate kṣaṇāt

"Whether impure or pure, at all times, always, by the mere remembrance of the name one is instantly freed from worldly existence."

Verse 9 (padma.5.80.9)

नानापराधयुक्तस्य नामापि च हरत्यघम् । यज्ञव्रततपोदानं सांगं नैव कलौ युगे

nānāparādhayuktasya nāmāpi ca haratyagham yajñavratatapodānaṁ sāṁgaṁ naiva kalau yuge

"Even for one laden with manifold offenses, the name alone removes the sin. Sacrifice, vow, austerity, and gift, with all their auxiliary rites, do not truly avail in the Kali age,"

Verse 10 (padma.5.80.10)

गंगास्नानं हरेर्नाम निरपायमिदं द्वयम्

gaṁgāsnānaṁ harernāma nirapāyamidaṁ dvayam

"bathing in the Ganga, and the name of Hari — these two alone are infallible."

Verse 11 (padma.5.80.11)

हत्यायुतं पापसहस्रमुग्रं गुर्वंगनाकोटिनिषेवणं च । स्तेयान्यथान्यानि हरेः प्रियेण गोविंदनाम्ना न च संति भद्रे

hatyāyutaṁ pāpasahasramugraṁ gurvaṁganākoṭiniṣevaṇaṁ ca steyānyathānyāni hareḥ priyeṇa goviṁdanāmnā na ca saṁti bhadre

"A myriad murders, a thousand terrible sins, the violation of millions of a guru's wives, theft and other such things — these do not exist, O gracious one, for one who bears the name Govinda, dear to Hari."

Verse 12 (padma.5.80.12)

अपवित्रः पवित्रो वा सर्वावस्थां गतोऽपि वा । यः स्मरेत्पुंडीकाक्षं स बाह्याभ्यंतरः शुचिः

apavitraḥ pavitro vā sarvāvasthāṁ gato'pi vā yaḥ smaretpuṁḍīkākṣaṁ sa bāhyābhyaṁtaraḥ śuciḥ

"Whether impure or pure, or in any condition whatsoever, he who remembers Pundarikaksha is pure, both outwardly and inwardly."

Verse 13 (padma.5.80.13)

नामसंस्मरणादेव तथा तस्यार्थचिंतनात् । सौवर्णीं राजतीं वापि तथा पैष्टीं स्रगाकृतिम्

nāmasaṁsmaraṇādeva tathā tasyārthaciṁtanāt sauvarṇīṁ rājatīṁ vāpi tathā paiṣṭīṁ sragākṛtim

"By the mere remembrance of the name, and likewise by contemplating its meaning, one is purified. Having made an image, of gold, silver, or even flour-dough, shaped like a garland,"

Verse 14 (padma.5.80.14)

पादयोश्चिह्नितां कृत्वा पूजां चैव समारभेत् । दक्षिणस्य पदोंगुष्ठमूले चक्रं बिभर्ति यः

pādayościhnitāṁ kṛtvā pūjāṁ caiva samārabhet dakṣiṇasya padoṁguṣṭhamūle cakraṁ bibharti yaḥ

"marked upon the two feet, one should begin worship. He who bears the discus at the base of the right foot's big toe —"

Verse 15 (padma.5.80.15)

तत्र नम्रजनस्यापि संसारच्छेदनाय च । मध्यमांगुलिमूले तु धत्ते कमलमच्युतः

tatra namrajanasyāpi saṁsāracchedanāya ca madhyamāṁgulimūle tu dhatte kamalamacyutaḥ

"there, even for the humble, it exists for the severing of worldly bondage. At the base of the middle toe, the unfallen one bears the lotus,"

Verse 16 (padma.5.80.16)

ध्यातृचित्तद्विरेफाणां लोभनायातिशोभनम् । पद्मस्याधोध्वजं धत्ते सर्वानर्थजयध्वजम्

dhyātṛcittadvirephāṇāṁ lobhanāyātiśobhanam padmasyādhodhvajaṁ dhatte sarvānarthajayadhvajam

"exceedingly lovely, for the enticing of the bees that are the minds of his meditators. Below the lotus he bears a banner, the very banner of victory over every misfortune."

Verse 17 (padma.5.80.17)

कनिष्ठामूलतो वज्रं भक्तपापौघभेदनम् । पार्श्वमध्येंऽकुशं भक्तचित्ते रभसकारणम्

kaniṣṭhāmūlato vajraṁ bhaktapāpaughabhedanam pārśvamadhyeṁ'kuśaṁ bhaktacitte rabhasakāraṇam

"From the base of the little toe, the thunderbolt, which shatters the flood of a devotee's sins; in the middle of the side, the goad, the cause of urgency in a devotee's heart —"

Verse 18 (padma.5.80.18)

भोगसंपन्मयं धत्ते यवमंगुष्ठपर्वणि । मूले गदां च पापाद्रिभेदनीं सर्वदेहिनाम्

bhogasaṁpanmayaṁ dhatte yavamaṁguṣṭhaparvaṇi mūle gadāṁ ca pāpādribhedanīṁ sarvadehinām

"he bears, on the toe-joint, a barleycorn-mark, full of the wealth of enjoyment; and at its root, the mace, which shatters the mountain of sin for all embodied beings —"

Verse 19 (padma.5.80.19)

सर्वविद्याप्रकाशाय धत्ते स भगवानजः । पद्मादीन्यपि चिह्नानि तत्र दक्षेण यत्पुनः

sarvavidyāprakāśāya dhatte sa bhagavānajaḥ padmādīnyapi cihnāni tatra dakṣeṇa yatpunaḥ

"for the illumination of all knowledge, that unborn Lord bears it. The lotus and other such marks that are on the right foot —"

Verse 20 (padma.5.80.20)

वामपादे वसेत्सोऽयं बिभर्त्ति करुणानिधिः । तस्माद्गोविंदमाहात्म्यमानंदरससुंदरम्

vāmapāde vasetso'yaṁ bibhartti karuṇānidhiḥ tasmādgoviṁdamāhātmyamānaṁdarasasuṁdaram

"on the left foot too, that compassionate treasury bears the same. Therefore, the glory of Govinda, beautiful with the sweetness of bliss,"

Verse 21 (padma.5.80.21)

शृणुयात्कीर्त्तयेन्नित्यं स निर्मुक्तो न संशयः । मासकृत्यं प्रवक्ष्यामि विष्णोः प्रीतिकरं परम्

śṛṇuyātkīrttayennityaṁ sa nirmukto na saṁśayaḥ māsakṛtyaṁ pravakṣyāmi viṣṇoḥ prītikaraṁ param

"whoever hears or recites it daily, is freed, without doubt. I shall now tell the monthly observances, most pleasing to Vishnu."

Verse 22 (padma.5.80.22)

ज्येष्ठे तु स्नापनं कुर्याच्छ्रीविष्णोर्यत्नतः शुचिः । दैनंदिनं तु दुरितं पक्षमासर्त्तुवर्षजम्

jyeṣṭhe tu snāpanaṁ kuryācchrīviṣṇoryatnataḥ śuciḥ dainaṁdinaṁ tu duritaṁ pakṣamāsarttuvarṣajam

"In Jyeshtha, one should perform the bathing-ceremony of Shri Vishnu with effort, purely. The daily sin, and that of a fortnight, a month, a season, and a year,"

Verse 23 (padma.5.80.23)

ब्रह्महत्यासहस्राणि ज्ञाता ज्ञातकृतानि च । स्वर्णस्तेयसुरापान गुरुतल्पायुतानि च

brahmahatyāsahasrāṇi jñātā jñātakṛtāni ca svarṇasteyasurāpāna gurutalpāyutāni ca

"thousands of brahmin-slayings, whether known to be committed knowingly or not, the theft of gold, drinking of liquor, and myriads of violations of a guru's bed,"

Verse 24 (padma.5.80.24)

कोटिकोटिसहस्राणि ह्युपपापानि यानि च । सर्वाण्यथ प्रणश्यंति पौर्णमास्यां तु वासरे

koṭikoṭisahasrāṇi hyupapāpāni yāni ca sarvāṇyatha praṇaśyaṁti paurṇamāsyāṁ tu vāsare

"and whatever crores upon crores upon thousands of secondary sins there are — all of these are destroyed on the day of the full moon,"

Verse 25 (padma.5.80.25)

आसिंचेदच्युतं मूर्ध्नि तदैतत्कलशोदकम् । पुरुषसूक्तेन मंत्रेण पावमानीभिरेव च

āsiṁcedacyutaṁ mūrdhni tadaitatkalaśodakam puruṣasūktena maṁtreṇa pāvamānībhireva ca

"if one bathes the unfallen one on the head with that kalasha-water, with the Purusha-sukta mantra, and with the Pavamani hymns as well,"

Verse 26 (padma.5.80.26)

नालिकेरोदकेनाथ तथा तालफलांबुना । रत्नोदकेन गंधेन तथा पुष्पोदकेन च

nālikerodakenātha tathā tālaphalāṁbunā ratnodakena gaṁdhena tathā puṣpodakena ca

"and then with coconut-water, and likewise with palm-fruit water, with gem-infused water, with scented water, and with flower-water,"

Verse 27 (padma.5.80.27)

पंचोपचारैराराध्य यथाविभवविस्तरैः । घं घंटायै नम इति घंटावाद्यं प्रदापयेत्

paṁcopacārairārādhya yathāvibhavavistaraiḥ ghaṁ ghaṁṭāyai nama iti ghaṁṭāvādyaṁ pradāpayet

"worshipping with the five offerings, as lavishly as one's means allow — saying 'Gham, salutation to the bell,' one should offer the sound of the bell,"

Verse 28 (padma.5.80.28)

पतितस्य महाध्वानन्यस्तपातकसंचये । पाहि मां पापिनं घोरसंसारार्णवपातिनम्

patitasya mahādhvānanyastapātakasaṁcaye pāhi māṁ pāpinaṁ ghorasaṁsārārṇavapātinam

"with a great resounding cry, for the fallen one, upon whom a heap of sins has been laid: 'Protect me, a sinner, falling into the terrible ocean of worldly existence.'"

Verse 29 (padma.5.80.29)

य एवं कुरुते विद्वान्ब्राह्मणः श्रोत्रियः शुचिः । सर्वपापैः प्रमुच्येत विष्णुलोकं स गच्छति

ya evaṁ kurute vidvānbrāhmaṇaḥ śrotriyaḥ śuciḥ sarvapāpaiḥ pramucyeta viṣṇulokaṁ sa gacchati

"The learned brahmin, versed in the Vedas, pure, who does this, is freed from all sins; he goes to Vishnu's realm."

Verse 30 (padma.5.80.30)

आषाढशुक्लैकादश्यां कुर्यात्स्वापमहोत्सवम् । आषाढे च रथं कुर्याच्छ्रावणे श्रवणाविधिम्

āṣāḍhaśuklaikādaśyāṁ kuryātsvāpamahotsavam āṣāḍhe ca rathaṁ kuryācchrāvaṇe śravaṇāvidhim

"On the eleventh of the bright half of Ashadha, one should perform the great festival of Vishnu's sleep. In Ashadha one should hold the chariot-festival; in Shravana, the rite of Shravana."

Verse 31 (padma.5.80.31)

भाद्रे च जन्मदिवस उपवासपरो भवेत् । प्रसुप्तस्य परीवर्तमाश्विने मासि कारयेत्

bhādre ca janmadivasa upavāsaparo bhavet prasuptasya parīvartamāśvine māsi kārayet

"In Bhadrapada, on his birthday, one should observe a fast. In the month of Ashvina, one should perform the turning-over of the sleeping Lord."

Verse 32 (padma.5.80.32)

उत्थानं श्रीहरेः कुर्यादन्यथा विष्णुद्रोहकृत् । शुभे चैवाश्विने मासि महामायां च पूजयेत्

utthānaṁ śrīhareḥ kuryādanyathā viṣṇudrohakṛt śubhe caivāśvine māsi mahāmāyāṁ ca pūjayet

"One should perform the rising of Shri Hari; otherwise one becomes an offender against Vishnu. In the auspicious month of Ashvina, one should also worship Mahamaya,"

Verse 33 (padma.5.80.33)

सौवर्णीं राजतीं वापि विष्णुरूपां बलिं विना । हिंसाद्वेषौ न कर्तव्यौ धर्मात्मा विष्णुपूजकः

sauvarṇīṁ rājatīṁ vāpi viṣṇurūpāṁ baliṁ vinā hiṁsādveṣau na kartavyau dharmātmā viṣṇupūjakaḥ

"made of gold or silver, in Vishnu's own form, without any blood offering. Violence and hatred should never be practiced by the righteous worshipper of Vishnu."

Verse 34 (padma.5.80.34)

कार्तिके पुष्यमासे च कामतः पुण्यमाचरेत् । दामोदराय दीपं च प्रांशुस्थाने प्रदापयेत्

kārtike puṣyamāse ca kāmataḥ puṇyamācaret dāmodarāya dīpaṁ ca prāṁśusthāne pradāpayet

"In Kartika and in the month of Pushya, one should perform merit according to one's wish. One should offer a lamp to Damodara, placed on a raised platform."

Verse 35 (padma.5.80.35)

सप्तवर्तिप्रमाणेन दीपः स्याच्चतुरंगुलः । पक्षांते च प्रकर्तव्या दीपमालावलि शुभा

saptavartipramāṇena dīpaḥ syāccaturaṁgulaḥ pakṣāṁte ca prakartavyā dīpamālāvali śubhā

"The lamp should have seven wicks and measure four fingers in height. At the end of the fortnight, an auspicious row of lamp-garlands should be arranged."

Verse 36 (padma.5.80.36)

मार्गशीर्षे सिते पक्षे षष्ठ्यां च सितवस्त्रकैः । पूजयेज्जगदीशं च ब्रह्माणं च विशेषतः

mārgaśīrṣe site pakṣe ṣaṣṭhyāṁ ca sitavastrakaiḥ pūjayejjagadīśaṁ ca brahmāṇaṁ ca viśeṣataḥ

"In the bright fortnight of Margashirsha, on the sixth day, with white garments, one should worship the Lord of the universe, and especially Brahma."

Verse 37 (padma.5.80.37)

पौषे पुष्पाभिषेकं च वर्जयेच्चंदनं श्लथम् । संक्रांत्यां माघमासे च साधिवासित तंडुलात्

pauṣe puṣpābhiṣekaṁ ca varjayeccaṁdanaṁ ślatham saṁkrāṁtyāṁ māghamāse ca sādhivāsita taṁḍulāt

"In Pushya, one should perform the flower-bathing, avoiding loose sandal-paste. At the solstice, in the month of Magha, from rice soaked overnight,"

Verse 38 (padma.5.80.38)

नैवेद्यं विष्णवे दद्यादिमं मंत्रमुदीरयेत् । ब्राह्मणान्भोजयेद्भक्त्या देवदेवपुरः स्थितान्

naivedyaṁ viṣṇave dadyādimaṁ maṁtramudīrayet brāhmaṇānbhojayedbhaktyā devadevapuraḥ sthitān

"one should offer food to Vishnu and recite this mantra. One should feed brahmins with devotion, seated before the Lord of gods,"

Verse 39 (padma.5.80.39)

अभ्यर्च्य भगवद्भक्तान्द्विजांश्च भगवद्धिया । एकस्मिन्भोजिते भक्ते कोटिर्भवति भोजिता

abhyarcya bhagavadbhaktāndvijāṁśca bhagavaddhiyā ekasminbhojite bhakte koṭirbhavati bhojitā

"having duly honored the devotees of the Lord and the twice-born, with the thought that they are the Lord himself. When one devotee is fed, it is as if a myriad have been fed."

Verse 40 (padma.5.80.40)

विप्रभोजनमात्रेण व्यंगं सांगं ध्रुवं भवेत् । पंचम्यां शुक्लपक्षे तु स्नापयित्वा च केशवम्

viprabhojanamātreṇa vyaṁgaṁ sāṁgaṁ dhruvaṁ bhavet paṁcamyāṁ śuklapakṣe tu snāpayitvā ca keśavam

"By feeding even a single brahmin, an incomplete rite certainly becomes complete. On the fifth of the bright fortnight, having bathed Keshava,"

Verse 41 (padma.5.80.41)

पूजयित्वा विधानेन चूतपल्लवसंयुतैः । फलचूर्णैश्च विविधैर्वासितैः पटसाधितैः

pūjayitvā vidhānena cūtapallavasaṁyutaiḥ phalacūrṇaiśca vividhairvāsitaiḥ paṭasādhitaiḥ

"having duly worshipped him with mango-shoots, with various fragrant fruit-powders prepared with cloth strainers,"

Verse 42 (padma.5.80.42)

काननं रमणीयं च प्रदीप्तं दीपदीपितम् । द्राक्षेक्षु रंभा जंबीर नागरंगं च पूगकम्

kānanaṁ ramaṇīyaṁ ca pradīptaṁ dīpadīpitam drākṣekṣu raṁbhā jaṁbīra nāgaraṁgaṁ ca pūgakam

"one should adorn a lovely grove, illumined with lamps, with grapes, sugarcane, plantain, citron, orange, and betel-nut,"

Verse 43 (padma.5.80.43)

नालिकेरं च धात्रीं च पनसं च हरीतकीम् । अन्यैश्च वृक्षखंडैश्च सर्वर्तुकुसुमान्वितैः

nālikeraṁ ca dhātrīṁ ca panasaṁ ca harītakīm anyaiśca vṛkṣakhaṁḍaiśca sarvartukusumānvitaiḥ

"coconut, myrobalan, jackfruit, and harītakī, and with other clusters of trees adorned with the flowers of every season,"

Verse 44 (padma.5.80.44)

अन्यैश्च विविधैश्चैव फलपुष्पसमन्वितैः । वितानैः कुसुमोद्दामैर्वारिपूर्णघटैस्तथा

anyaiśca vividhaiścaiva phalapuṣpasamanvitaiḥ vitānaiḥ kusumoddāmairvāripūrṇaghaṭaistathā

"and with other varied fruits and flowers together, with canopies rich with flowers, and with pots full of water,"

Verse 45 (padma.5.80.45)

चूतशाखोपशाखाभिः शोभितं छत्रचामरैः । जयकृष्णेति संस्मृत्य प्रदक्षिणपुरस्सरम्

cūtaśākhopaśākhābhiḥ śobhitaṁ chatracāmaraiḥ jayakṛṣṇeti saṁsmṛtya pradakṣiṇapurassaram

"adorned with mango branches and twigs, with parasols and chowries; remembering 'Jaya Krishna,' preceded by circumambulation —"

Verse 46 (padma.5.80.46)

विशेषतः कलियुगे दोलोत्सवो विधीयते । फाल्गुने च चतुर्दश्यामष्टमे यामसंज्ञके

viśeṣataḥ kaliyuge dolotsavo vidhīyate phālgune ca caturdaśyāmaṣṭame yāmasaṁjñake

"especially in the Kali age, the swing-festival is enjoined. In Phalguna, on the fourteenth, at the eighth watch called yama,"

Verse 47 (padma.5.80.47)

अथवा पौर्णमास्यां तु प्रतिपत्संधिसंज्ञके । पूजयेद्विधिवद्भक्त्या फल्गुचूर्णैश्चतुर्विधैः

athavā paurṇamāsyāṁ tu pratipatsaṁdhisaṁjñake pūjayedvidhivadbhaktyā phalgucūrṇaiścaturvidhaiḥ

"or on the full-moon day, at the junction called pratipat, one should duly and devotedly worship with four kinds of colored powders,"

Verse 48 (padma.5.80.48)

सितरक्तैर्गौरपीतैः कर्पूरादि विमिश्रितैः । हरिद्रारागयोगाच्च रंगरूपैर्मनोहरैः

sitaraktairgaurapītaiḥ karpūrādi vimiśritaiḥ haridrārāgayogācca raṁgarūpairmanoharaiḥ

"white, red, saffron and yellow, mixed with camphor and the like; with turmeric-tinted, enchanting colored powders,"

Verse 49 (padma.5.80.49)

अन्यैर्वा रंगरूपैश्च प्रीणयेत्परमेश्वरम् । एकादश्यां समारभ्य पंचम्यां तं समापयेत्

anyairvā raṁgarūpaiśca prīṇayetparameśvaram ekādaśyāṁ samārabhya paṁcamyāṁ taṁ samāpayet

"or with other kinds of colored powders, one should gladden the supreme Lord. Beginning on the eleventh, one should complete it on the fifth."

Verse 50 (padma.5.80.50)

पंचाहानि त्र्यहानि वा दोलोत्सवो विधीयते । दक्षिणाभिमुखं कृष्णं दोलमानं सकृन्नराः

paṁcāhāni tryahāni vā dolotsavo vidhīyate dakṣiṇābhimukhaṁ kṛṣṇaṁ dolamānaṁ sakṛnnarāḥ

"For five days, or for three days, the swing-festival is enjoined. Men who see Krishna swinging, facing south, even once,"

Verse 51 (padma.5.80.51)

दृष्ट्वापराधनिचयैर्मुक्तास्ते नात्र संशयः । निक्षिप्य जलपात्रे च मासि माधवसंज्ञके

dṛṣṭvāparādhanicayairmuktāste nātra saṁśayaḥ nikṣipya jalapātre ca māsi mādhavasaṁjñake

"are freed from the accumulated mass of their offenses — of this there is no doubt. Having placed him in a vessel of water, in the month called Madhava,"

Verse 52 (padma.5.80.52)

सौवर्णपात्रे रौप्ये वा ताम्रे वाप्यथ मृण्मये । तोयस्थं योऽर्चयेद्देवं शालग्रामसमुद्भवम्

sauvarṇapātre raupye vā tāmre vāpyatha mṛṇmaye toyasthaṁ yo'rcayeddevaṁ śālagrāmasamudbhavam

"in a vessel of gold, silver, copper, or even clay — whoever worships the god, submerged in that water, arisen from the Shaligrama,"

Verse 53 (padma.5.80.53)

प्रतिमां वा महाभागे तस्य पुण्यं न गण्यते । दमनारोपणं कृत्वा श्रीविष्णौ च समर्पयेत्

pratimāṁ vā mahābhāge tasya puṇyaṁ na gaṇyate damanāropaṇaṁ kṛtvā śrīviṣṇau ca samarpayet

"or an image, O greatly blessed one, his merit cannot be counted. Having performed the placing of the damana-plant upon him, one should offer it to Shri Vishnu."

Verse 54 (padma.5.80.54)

वैशाखे श्रावणे भाद्रे कर्तव्यं वा तदर्पणम् । पूर्वेपूर्वे तु वातस्थे दमनादिषु कर्मसु

vaiśākhe śrāvaṇe bhādre kartavyaṁ vā tadarpaṇam pūrvepūrve tu vātasthe damanādiṣu karmasu

"In Vaishakha, Shravana, or Bhadrapada, that offering should be performed. In whichever season prevails, the rite of damana and the like"

Verse 55 (padma.5.80.55)

प्रकर्तव्यं विधानेन अन्यथा निष्फलं भवेत् । वैशाखे च तृतीयायां जलमध्ये विशेषतः

prakartavyaṁ vidhānena anyathā niṣphalaṁ bhavet vaiśākhe ca tṛtīyāyāṁ jalamadhye viśeṣataḥ

"should be duly performed; otherwise it becomes fruitless. In Vaishakha, on the third day, in the midst of water especially,"

Verse 56 (padma.5.80.56)

अथवा मंडले कुर्यान्मंडपे वा बृहद्वने । सुगंधचंदनेनांगं सुपुष्टं च दिनेदिने

athavā maṁḍale kuryānmaṁḍape vā bṛhadvane sugaṁdhacaṁdanenāṁgaṁ supuṣṭaṁ ca dinedine

"or in a mandala, or in a pavilion, or in a great forest, one should anoint the body daily with fragrant sandal, well-nourishing,"

Verse 57 (padma.5.80.57)

यथाप्रयत्नतः कुर्यात्कृशांगस्येव पुष्टिदम् । चंदनागुरु ह्रीबेर कृष्णकुंकुम रोचना

yathāprayatnataḥ kuryātkṛśāṁgasyeva puṣṭidam caṁdanāguru hrībera kṛṣṇakuṁkuma rocanā

"as diligently as one would give nourishment to an emaciated limb. Sandal, aloe-wood, hribera-root, black saffron, gorochana,"

Verse 58 (padma.5.80.58)

जटामांसी मुरा चैव विष्णोर्गंधाष्टकं विदुः । तैस्तैर्गंधयुतैश्चापि विष्णोरंगानि लेपयेत्

jaṭāmāṁsī murā caiva viṣṇorgaṁdhāṣṭakaṁ viduḥ taistairgaṁdhayutaiścāpi viṣṇoraṁgāni lepayet

"jatamansi, and mura — these are known as the eightfold fragrance of Vishnu. With these various fragrant substances, one should anoint Vishnu's limbs."

Verse 59 (padma.5.80.59)

धृष्टं च तुलसीकाष्ठं कर्पूरागुरुयोगतः । अथवा केसरैर्योज्यं हरिचंदनमुच्यते

dhṛṣṭaṁ ca tulasīkāṣṭhaṁ karpūrāguruyogataḥ athavā kesarairyojyaṁ haricaṁdanamucyate

"Ground tulasi-wood, joined with camphor and aloe-wood, or with saffron-filaments — this is called 'Haricandana.'"

Verse 60 (padma.5.80.60)

यात्राकाले च ये कृष्णं भक्त्या पश्यंति मानवाः । न तेषां पुनरावृत्तिः कल्पकोटिशतैरपि

yātrākāle ca ye kṛṣṇaṁ bhaktyā paśyaṁti mānavāḥ na teṣāṁ punarāvṛttiḥ kalpakoṭiśatairapi

"Those men who, at the time of the ritual procession, behold Krishna with devotion — for them there is no return to rebirth even after a hundred crores of kalpas."

Verse 61 (padma.5.80.61)

सुगंधमिश्रितैस्तोयैर्देवदेवं गलंति ये । अथवा पुष्पमध्ये तु स्थापयेज्जगदीश्वरम्

sugaṁdhamiśritaistoyairdevadevaṁ galaṁti ye athavā puṣpamadhye tu sthāpayejjagadīśvaram

"Those who anoint the Lord of gods with fragrance-mixed water — or one should instead establish the Lord of the universe amid flowers."

Verse 62 (padma.5.80.62)

वृंदावनं तत्र गत्वा उपस्कृत्य फलानि च । विष्णुभक्तेन योग्येन भोजयेत्तदशेषतः

vṛṁdāvanaṁ tatra gatvā upaskṛtya phalāni ca viṣṇubhaktena yogyena bhojayettadaśeṣataḥ

"Having gone to Vrindavana there, having prepared the fruits, one should feed a worthy Vishnu-devotee with all of it, leaving nothing."

Verse 63 (padma.5.80.63)

नारिकेलफलं बीजकोशं चोद्धृत्य दापयेत् । घोंटाफलं च पनसं कोशमुद्धृत्य दापयेत्

nārikelaphalaṁ bījakośaṁ coddhṛtya dāpayet ghoṁṭāphalaṁ ca panasaṁ kośamuddhṛtya dāpayet

"One should offer a coconut with its inner kernel extracted; one should offer a ghonta-fruit and a jackfruit with their inner pulp extracted."

Verse 64 (padma.5.80.64)

दध्ना विमिश्रितं चान्नं घृतेनाप्लुत्य दापयेत् । पाचितं पिष्टकं पूपमष्टादशघृतेन च

dadhnā vimiśritaṁ cānnaṁ ghṛtenāplutya dāpayet pācitaṁ piṣṭakaṁ pūpamaṣṭādaśaghṛtena ca

"One should offer rice mixed with yogurt, drenched with ghee; one should offer cooked flour-cakes and puffed rice-cakes with eighteen-fold ghee,"

Verse 65 (padma.5.80.65)

तैलैश्च तिलसंमिश्रैः फलं पक्वं प्रदापयेत् । यद्यदेवात्मनः प्रीतं तत्तदीशाय दापयेत्

tailaiśca tilasaṁmiśraiḥ phalaṁ pakvaṁ pradāpayet yadyadevātmanaḥ prītaṁ tattadīśāya dāpayet

"and ripe fruit with oils mixed with sesame. Whatever is dear to oneself, that one should offer to the Lord."

Verse 66 (padma.5.80.66)

दत्वा नैवेद्यवस्त्रादि नाददीत कथंचन । त्यक्तं च विष्णुमुद्दिश्य तद्भक्तेभ्यो विशेषतः

datvā naivedyavastrādi nādadīta kathaṁcana tyaktaṁ ca viṣṇumuddiśya tadbhaktebhyo viśeṣataḥ

"Having given food-offerings, cloth and the like, one should never take them back in any way; and what is thus given, dedicated to Vishnu, should be given especially to his devotees."

Verse 67 (padma.5.80.67)

इति ते कथितं किंचित्समासेन महेश्वरि । गोपनीयं प्रयत्नेन स्वयोनिरिव पार्वति

iti te kathitaṁ kiṁcitsamāsena maheśvari gopanīyaṁ prayatnena svayoniriva pārvati

"Thus, O Maheshvari, I have told you this, in brief; it should be carefully guarded, O Parvati, as if it were your own kin."

Verse 68 (padma.5.80.68)

श्रीकृष्णरूपगुणवर्णन शास्त्रवर्गबोधाधिकार इह चेदलमन्यपाठैः । तत्प्रेमभावरसभक्तिविलास नामहारेषु चेत्खलु मनः किमु कामिनीभिः

śrīkṛṣṇarūpaguṇavarṇana śāstravargabodhādhikāra iha cedalamanyapāṭhaiḥ tatpremabhāvarasabhaktivilāsa nāmahāreṣu cetkhalu manaḥ kimu kāminībhiḥ

"If one has authority here to understand this body of scripture describing the form and virtues of Shri Krishna, what need is there of other readings? If the mind delights in the garland of names of that love, feeling, and devotional play — then what use are worldly women?"

Verse 69 (padma.5.80.69)

तच्चेतसा प्रभजतां व्रजबालकेंद्रं वृंदावनक्षितितलं यमुनाजलं च । तल्लोकनाथपदपंकजधूलिमिश्रलिप्तं वपुः किल वृथागरुचंदनाद्यैः

taccetasā prabhajatāṁ vrajabālakeṁdraṁ vṛṁdāvanakṣititalaṁ yamunājalaṁ ca tallokanāthapadapaṁkajadhūlimiśraliptaṁ vapuḥ kila vṛthāgarucaṁdanādyaiḥ

Let those who serve with their whole heart the lord of the boys of Vraja, the ground of Vrindavana, and the water of the Yamuna — for that body which is smeared, mingled with the dust of that Lord of the world's lotus feet, other fragrances like aloe-wood and sandal are indeed useless.
