aṁbarīṣa uvāca- mune vaiśākhamāse'sminko vidhiḥ kiṁ tapo'dhikam kiṁ ca dānaṁ kathaṁ snānaṁ kathaṁ keśavapūjanam
Ambarisha said: O sage, in this month of Vaishakha, what is the procedure? What austerity is most excellent? What is the giving? How is the bathing done, and how is Keshava worshipped?
Verse 3 (padma.5.95.3)

uddhṛtāsi varāheṇa viṣṇunā śatabāhunā namaste sarvalokānāṁ prabhavāraṇi suvrate

dvijaṁ gāṁ kāṁcanaṁ spṛṣṭvā paścācca svagṛhaṁ vrajet āśramasthāṁstataḥ pūjya pratimāṁ cāpi pūjayet
—having touched a Brahmin, a cow, and gold, he should then go home. There, having honored those in the household, he should also worship the image of the deity.

pūrvaṁ bhaktyaiva goviṁdaṁ gṛhī ca niyatātmavān pūjayedbhaktito rājannubhayatra yathāvidhi
O king, first, with devotion alone, one should worship Govinda; the self-controlled householder should worship with devotion in both places (the river and the home), according to rule.
Verse 47 (padma.5.95.47)
viśeṣādapi vaiśākhe yo'rcayenmadhusūdanam sarvaṁ saṁvatsaraṁ yāvadarcitastena mādhavaḥ
Especially in Vaishakha, whoever worships Madhusudana — by him, Madhava is, as it were, worshipped for the whole year.
Verse 48 (padma.5.95.48)
mādhave māsi saṁprāpte meṣasthe karmasākṣiṇi keśavaprītaye kuryātkeśavavratasaṁcayam
When the month of Madhava has arrived, with the sun in Aries, one should, for the pleasure of Keshava, accumulate the vows of Keshava.

vaiśākhe vidhinā snānadvayaṁ nadyādike bahiḥ haviṣyaṁ brahmacaryaṁ ca bhūśayyā niyamasthitiḥ
In Vaishakha, according to rule: two baths daily outside in a river or the like; sanctified food; celibacy; sleeping on the ground; observance of the vow—
Verse 54 (padma.5.95.54)
vrataṁ dānaṁ japo homo madhusūdanapūjanam api janmasahasrotthaṁ pāpaṁ dahati dāruṇam
—the vow, gift-giving, mantra-recitation, fire-offering, and the worship of Madhusudana — these burn away even terrible sin accumulated over a thousand births.
Verse 55 (padma.5.95.55)
yathaiva mādhavo dhyāto vināśayati kilbiṣam tathaiva mādhave snānaṁ niyamena vinirmitam
Just as Madhava, when meditated upon, destroys sin, so too does bathing in the month of Madhava, performed according to the vow.
Verse 56 (padma.5.95.56)

pādatrāṇātapatrāṁbu kuṁbhāndadyāddvijātiṣu trisaṁdhyaṁ pūjayedīśaṁ bhaktito madhusūdanam
—footwear, umbrellas, and water-pots should be given to twice-borns. At the three junctures of the day, one should worship, with devotion, the Lord Madhusudana.
Verse 59 (padma.5.95.59)

Meditating on him as accompanied directly by the spotless Lakshmi — and with vessels of gold and sesame, according to his means, many Brahmins—
Verse 60 (padma.5.95.60)
tarpayedudapātrairyo brahmahatyāṁ vyapohati vaiśākhe māsi yaḥ snātvā prātarnadyāṁ samāhitaḥ
—he who satisfies Brahmins with water-vessels thereby wards off the sin of Brahmin-slaying. He who, having bathed in the morning in a river during Vaishakha, composed in mind—
Verse 61 (padma.5.95.61)
pūjayitvā hariṁ bhaktyā puṣpaiḥ kālodbhavaiḥ phalaiḥ pūjayedbrāhmaṇaṁ śaktyā pākhaṁḍālāpavarjitaḥ
—having worshipped Hari with devotion, with seasonal flowers and fruits, should worship a Brahmin according to his means, avoiding conversation with heretics—
Verse 62 (padma.5.95.62)
tarpayedvastragodānai ratnādyairdhanasaṁcayaiḥ anyadvittaṁ yathāśakti stokaṁ stokaṁ samācaret
—he should satisfy them with gifts of clothing, cows, jewels, and accumulated wealth; whatever other wealth he has, let him give little by little, according to his means.
Verse 63 (padma.5.95.63)
paścādviniḥsvaḥ puruṣo mādhave māsi mādhavam puṣpārcanavidhānena pūjayenmadhusūdanam
Even a man without wealth should, in the month of Madhava, worship Madhusudana with the mere offering of flowers.
Verse 64 (padma.5.95.64)
sarvapāpavinirmuktaḥ pitṝṇāṁ tārayecchatam sajanmaśatasāhasraṁ na śokaphalabhāgbhavet
Freed from all sin, he saves a hundred generations of his ancestors; through a hundred thousand births, he does not become subject to sorrow.
Verse 65 (padma.5.95.65)
He has no fear of disease, no poverty, no bondage; he is born a devotee of Vishnu, blessed, birth after birth.
Verse 66 (padma.5.95.66)
yāvadyugasahasrāṇi śatamaṣṭottaraṁ bhavet tāvatsvarge vasedvīra bhūpatiśca punarbhavet
For as many thousand ages as make one hundred and eight, O hero, he dwells in heaven, and thereafter is born again as a king.
Verse 67 (padma.5.95.67)
bhūpatervividhānbhogānbhuktvā caiva yathāsukham mādhavasya prasādena mādhave līyate tataḥ
Having enjoyed, as a king, various pleasures at will, then, by the grace of Madhava, he becomes absorbed into Madhava.
Verse 68 (padma.5.95.68)
śṛṇu rājanpravakṣyāmi samāsānmādhavārcanam vaidikaṁ tāṁtrikaṁ vāpi miśrakaṁ pāpanāśanam
Hear, O king, I shall tell you in brief the worship of Madhava — whether Vedic, Tantric, or mixed — which destroys sin.
Verse 69 (padma.5.95.69)
nahyaṁto'naṁtapārasya nāṁtaḥ pūjāvidhernṛpa atha saṁkṣipya cocyeta yathāvadanupūrvaśaḥ
There is no end to the limitless glory, O king, nor to the modes of worship; let it be told concisely, in due order.
Verse 70 (padma.5.95.70)
vaidikastāṁtriko miśraḥ śrīviṣṇostrividho makhaḥ trayāṇāmīpsitenaiva vidhinā harimarcayet
The worship of Sri Vishnu is threefold — Vedic, Tantric, and mixed. According to whichever of the three procedures is desired, one should worship Hari.
Verse 71 (padma.5.95.71)
vaidiko miśrako vāpi viprādīnāṁ vidhīyate tāṁtriko viṣṇubhaktasya śūdrasyāpi prakīrtitaḥ
The Vedic or the mixed procedure is prescribed for Brahmins and the rest; the Tantric is declared for a devotee of Vishnu, even a Shudra.
Verse 72 (padma.5.95.72)
yathā svanigamenoktaṁ dvijatvaṁ prāpya pūruṣaḥ yajecca vidhivadviṣṇuṁ brahmacārī samāhitaḥ
As declared according to one's own scriptural tradition, a man, having attained the state of twice-born, should worship Vishnu duly, as a composed celibate.
Verse 73 (padma.5.95.73)
arcayetsthaṁḍile'gnau vā sūrye'psu hṛdi vā dvije dravyeṇa bhaktiyuktena svaguruṁ tadanujñayā
He should worship on a ritual altar, in fire, in the sun, in water, in his heart, or in a Brahmin — with substances offered with devotion, and honor his own guru with the guru's permission.
Verse 74 (padma.5.95.74)
pūrvaṁ snānaṁ prakurvīta dhautadaṁtoṁ'gaśuddhaye ubhayorapi ca snānaṁ maṁtrairmṛdgrahaṇādinā
First he should bathe, having cleaned his teeth, for purification of the body; the bathing, in both traditions, is done with mantras, the taking of mud, and the like.
Verse 75 (padma.5.95.75)
saṁdhyopāstyādikarmāṇi vedataṁtroditāni vai pūjāṁte kalpayetsamyaksaṁkalpaṁ karmapāvanam
The rites of sandhya worship and the like are declared in the Vedas and Tantras; before worship, one should properly make the ritual resolve that purifies the act.
Verse 76 (padma.5.95.76)
śailī dārumayī lauhī lepyā lekhyā ca saikatī manomayī maṇimayī pratimāṣṭavidhā smṛtā
The image of the deity is remembered as eightfold: made of stone, wood, metal, plaster, painting, sand, mind, and gems.
Verse 77 (padma.5.95.77)
calācaleti dvividhā pratiṣṭhā jīvamaṁdiram udvāsā vāhanena staḥ sthirāyāṁ mādhavārcane
The consecration is twofold: movable and immovable — the temple as the living abode; in fixed worship of Madhava, both dismissal and invocation via a vehicle apply.
Verse 78 (padma.5.95.78)
asthirāyāṁ vikalpaḥ syātsthaṁḍile tu bhaveddvayam snāpanaṁ tvavilepyāyāmanyatra parimārjanam
In movable worship there is a choice; on a ritual altar, both apply; bathing applies where the image is not made of plaster, elsewhere wiping is done.
Verse 79 (padma.5.95.79)
dravyaiḥ prasiddhairdevejyā pratimādiṣvamāyinaḥ bhaktasya ca yathālabdhairbhaktibhāvena caiva hi
Worship of the god in images and the like is performed with well-established substances, by one free of deceit, and by the devotee with whatever is available, in a spirit of devotion.
Verse 80 (padma.5.95.80)
snānālaṁkaraṇaṁ śreṣṭhamarcāyāmeva bhūpate sthaṁḍileṣvapi vinyāso vahnāvājyahutaṁ haviḥ
O king, bathing and adornment are best for the fixed image; on the altar, placement; in fire, the ghee-oblation.
Verse 81 (padma.5.95.81)
sūrye cābhyarhaṇaṁ śreṣṭhaṁ sthaṁḍile salilādibhiḥ śraddhayopahṛtaṁ śreṣṭhaṁ harau bhaktena vāryapi
For the sun, veneration is best; on the altar, worship with water and the like; whatever is offered with faith is excellent — even mere water offered by a devotee to Hari.
Verse 82 (padma.5.95.82)

Seated facing east or north — or facing the image — having performed nyasa, he should touch the consecrated image of Hari with his hand.
Verse 84 (padma.5.95.84)
kalaśaṁ prokṣaṇīyaṁ ca yathāvadupasādhayet tadadbhirdevayajanaṁ dravyāṇyātmānameva ca
He should duly prepare the kalasha and the sprinkling-vessel; with that water he should sprinkle the place of worship, the materials, and himself.

hṛtaśīrṣṇā ca śikhayā gāyatryā cābhimaṁtrayet piṁḍe vāyvagnisaṁsiddhe hṛtpadmasthāṁ parāṁ vibhoḥ
He should consecrate himself with the shirah and shikha mantras along with the Gayatri; in the body, perfected by wind and fire, the supreme power of the Lord seated in the heart-lotus—
Verse 87 (padma.5.95.87)
aṇvīṁ jīvakalāṁ dhyāyennādāṁte siddhibhāvitām tayātmabhūtayā piṁḍe vyāpte saṁpūjya tanmayaḥ
—the subtle life-spark, meditated upon at the end of the mystic sound, perfected through accomplishment; pervading the body with that power made his own, absorbed in that state, he should worship.
Verse 88 (padma.5.95.88)

yatkṛṣṇapraṇipātadhūlidhavalaṁ tadvarṣma tadvacchubhaṁ te netre tapasārjite surucire yābhyāṁ harirdṛśyate sā buddhirvimaleṁdu śaṁkhadhavalā yā mādhavavyāpinī sā jihvā mṛdubhāṣiṇī nṛpa muhuryā stauti nārāyaṇam
That body alone is beautiful which is whitened with the dust from bowing before Krishna; those eyes alone are truly excellent, gained through austerity, by which Hari is seen; that intellect alone is pure, white as the spotless moon or a conch, wholly absorbed in Madhava; and that tongue alone, O king, is sweet of speech, which again and again praises Narayana.
Verse 118 (padma.5.95.118)
mūlamaṁtreṇa kartavyaṁ strīśūdrairapi pūjanam śraddhayā svagurūddiṣṭamārgeṇānyaiśca vaiṣṇavaḥ
With the root mantra, worship should be performed even by women and Shudras, with faith, by the path shown by their own guru; and by other Vaishnavas too.
Verse 119 (padma.5.95.119)
idaṁ te sarvamākhyātaṁ pāvanaṁ mādhavārcanam viśeṣānmādhave māsi tvametatkuru bhūpate
All this purifying worship of Madhava has now been told to you. Especially in the month of Madhava, O king, you should perform this.
Verse 120 (padma.5.95.120)
sūta uvāca- ityevamākarṇya vaco vicitraṁ puṇyaṁ pavitraṁ vidhinaṁdanasya praṇamya baddhāṁjalirāha rājā sakautukī bhāgavatapradhānaḥ
Suta said: Having thus heard this wondrous, meritorious, and sacred word of Narada, the king — foremost of devotees, filled with wonder — bowed, and, with joined palms, spoke.
Verse 121 (padma.5.95.121)
aṁbarīṣa uvāca- samastabhūmīvalayeśvaro'hamavyāhatājño vibudhaprasevī goviṁdapādāṁbujadattacittaḥ svacittasaṁtoṣitabhūmidevaḥ
Ambarisha said: I am the lord of the whole circle of the earth, whose command is unimpeded, a server of the wise; my mind is given to Govinda's lotus feet, and I keep the Brahmins content by my own heart's contentment.
Verse 122 (padma.5.95.122)
vikhyātarājocitavaṁśaratnaṁ niraṁtaraṁ dharmaruciryaśasvī sauṁdaryaśauryodayadānaśīlaḥ suputravānasmi jitārivargaḥ
I am a jewel of a renowned royal lineage, ever devoted to dharma, famed, endowed with beauty, valor, prosperity, and generosity; I have good sons and have conquered my enemies.
Verse 123 (padma.5.95.123)
kenāpi puṇyena pavitrabuddhirjātohamīdṛgguṇasaṁtaśrīḥ iyaṁ punaḥ śrīriva puṇyamūrtirlabdhā kutaḥ kāṁtimatī ca kāṁtā
By some merit I have been born with such a pure mind and such prosperity. And this beloved one, blessed as Lakshmi herself, Kantimati — from where have I obtained her?
Verse 124 (padma.5.95.124)
idaṁ me sukṛtaṁ sarvaṁ purājanmani ceṣṭitam samādiśa mune samyaksarvajñosi dayānidhe
All this is the good deed of my former birth. Tell me properly, O sage, O ocean of compassion, for you are all-knowing.
Verse 125 (padma.5.95.125)
nārada uvāca- iyaṁ rūpavatī nāma veśyāsīdanyajanmani sāṁprataṁ tava bhāryā yā satyācārātisuṁdarī
Narada said: She who is now your truthful, most beautiful wife was, in another birth, a courtesan named Rupavati.
Verse 126 (padma.5.95.126)
veśyādharmeṇa varteta yathoddiṣṭena bhāvinī kurvatī kila karmāṇi śubhāni dvijaśāsanāt
She, of fortunate destiny, though living by the profession of a courtesan, performed auspicious deeds under the guidance of Brahmins.
Verse 127 (padma.5.95.127)
devadāsa iti khyāto hemakāro bhavānabhūt pūrvajanmani vai tasyā rucerbhartā bhujaṁgamaḥ
You were, in a former birth, a goldsmith named Devadasa; and her husband was a serpent named Ruchi.
Verse 128 (padma.5.95.128)
iyaṁ bhavaṁtaṁ bhajate rucī rūpavatī punaḥ vyayārthamayanaṁ dharmaṁ sthitā vijñānamuttamam
This Rupavati was again devoted to Ruchi (you), and was established in righteous spending and the highest wisdom.
Verse 129 (padma.5.95.129)
ākarṇya caikadā dharmaṁ vaiśākhasnānasaṁbhavam cakre dharmavatī toye snānaṁ meṣagate ravau
Having once heard of the merit born of the Vaishakha bath, that righteous woman bathed in the water when the sun stood in Aries.
Verse 130 (padma.5.95.130)
dānaṁ dattavatī dakṣā veśyā rūpavatī sadā brāhmaṇāya namaskāraṁ bhaktyādarapuraḥsaram
That skillful courtesan Rupavati always gave gifts, and offered salutation to Brahmins with devotion and reverence.
Verse 131 (padma.5.95.131)
sa tayā devadāsastvaṁ bodhitaḥ snehayaṁtritaḥ kṛtavānbuddhitaḥ snānaṁ mādhave māsi sādaram
You, Devadasa, bound by affection, were instructed by her, and, with understanding, reverently performed the bath in the month of Madhava.
Verse 132 (padma.5.95.132)
tatra tretāyugasyādau tṛtīyāmāpyanirmalām suvarṇakāraṁ sovāca devadāsaṁ tamādarāt
There, at the beginning of the Treta Yuga, she spoke reverently to that goldsmith Devadasa on the spotless third lunar day.
Verse 133 (padma.5.95.133)
veśyovāca- uttamaṁ kuru sauvarṇaṁ madhusūdanamacyutam pūjayitvā yavairdevametaiḥ saṁtarpya cānalam
The courtesan said: Fashion a fine golden image of Madhusudana, the Undecaying; having worshipped the god, and satisfied the fire with these barley-grains—
Verse 134 (padma.5.95.134)
brāhmaṇāya ca dāsyāmi brāhmaṇānāmanujñayā dānametatpurāṇeṣu kathyate tatra cākṣayam
—I shall give it to a Brahmin, with the permission of Brahmins. The Puranas declare this gift to be imperishable.
Verse 135 (padma.5.95.135)
akṣayeti tṛtīyāsau brāhmaṇebhyaḥ śrutaṁ mayā śuklā vaiśākhamāsasya tadakṣayaphalapradam
I have heard from Brahmins that this tritiya is called Akshaya; the bright third lunar day of Vaishakha bestows imperishable fruit.
Verse 136 (padma.5.95.136)
asyāṁ dāsyāmi taṁ haimaṁ madhusūdanamavyayam nārada uvāca- iti tasya vacaḥ śrutvā madhuraṁ hemakārakaḥ
"On this day I shall give away that golden, undecaying image of Madhusudana." Narada said: Having heard her sweet words, the goldsmith—
Verse 137 (padma.5.95.137)
cakre suvarṇapratimāmacyutasyāpi suṁdarīm satyabhāvena dharmārthamiti cauryavivarjitaḥ
—with truthful heart, for the sake of dharma, entirely free of any theft, fashioned a beautiful golden image of Achyuta.
Verse 138 (padma.5.95.138)
yathoddiṣṭasya caṁdrasya pratimāṁ lakṣaṇānvitām dadau sā ca vidhānena snātvā viprāya suṁdarīm
He fashioned that beautiful, moon-bright image, endowed with the proper marks; and she, having bathed, duly gave it to a Brahmin.
Verse 139 (padma.5.95.139)
pūjayitvā tatastasyāmakṣayāyāṁ tithau nṛpa
—having worshipped it, O king, on that imperishable tithi.
Verse 140 (padma.5.95.140)
After some time, that righteous courtesan died; and Devadasa too died thereafter, at the end of his own life.
Verse 141 (padma.5.95.141)
tena puṇyena bhūpāla hemakāro'nya janmani sa tvaṁ prāpto mahīṁ rājannaśeṣaguṇasaṁyutaḥ
By that merit, O king, that goldsmith, in another birth — you — obtained this earth, endowed with every virtue.
Verse 142 (padma.5.95.142)
sāpi rūpavatī veśyā tena dharmeṇa te'bhavat nāmnā kāṁtimatī kāṁtā praṇayena pariplutā
And that courtesan Rupavati, by that same merit, became your beloved wife, named Kantimati, overflowing with love for you.
Verse 143 (padma.5.95.143)
vividhā vāsanā vīra karmaṇāṁ pūrvasaṁbhavāḥ vicitrā gatayastāta jñāyaṁte na budhairapi
O hero, manifold are the impressions born of past deeds; wondrous, O son, are their consequences — not even the wise can fully comprehend them.
Verse 144 (padma.5.95.144)
tamenaṁ mādhavaṁ māsaṁ pratikāryaṁ na saṁśayaḥ gopitaṁ tena devena brahmaṇā mādhavena ca
This very month of Madhava must indeed be duly honored, without doubt; it has been guarded as a secret by the god Brahma, and by Madhava himself.
Verse 145 (padma.5.95.145)
asādhusaṁgairanavāptavidyairasaṁyatairāśramadharmahīnaiḥ abhūtatīrthairakṛtavrataistairna labhyate mādhavamāsadharmaḥ
By those who keep the company of the wicked, who have not attained learning, who are unrestrained, devoid of the duties of their stage of life, who have not visited sacred fords, and who have not performed vows, the merit of the month of Madhava is not attained.
Verse 146 (padma.5.95.146)
goviṁdakeśavamukuṁdahare murāre lakṣmīnivāsa madhusūdana kṛṣṇa viṣṇo vāṇī varā na vadane vasatīti yeṣāṁ vaiśākhamāsaniyamo bhavate na teṣām
Those in whose mouths this excellent utterance does not dwell — "O Govinda, Keshava, Mukunda, Hare, Murari, Abode of Lakshmi, Madhusudana, Krishna, Vishnu" — for them the observance of the Vaishakha vow does not exist.
Verse 147 (padma.5.95.147)
Those who do not listen to beneficial words of the wise, nor to the nectar-like deeds of Hari, and who do not visit the temples of Lakshmi's Lord — they do not attain the observance of the Vaishakha vow.
Verse 148 (padma.5.95.148)
Those who have not served their elders, have not given their duly adorned daughters to a suitable groom at the proper time, and have not taught their children humility and the rest of dharma — they do not attain the observance of the Vaishakha vow.
Verse 149 (padma.5.95.149)
sūta uvāca- ityevamādiśya munirnareśa māmaṁtrya taṁ maṁtravidagragaṇyaḥ snātuṁ yayau mādhavamāsi gaṁgāmabhyarcitastena tadā sa viprāḥ
Suta said: Thus instructing the king, O sages, the sage Narada, foremost among knowers of mantras, having taken leave of the king — duly honored by him — went to bathe in the Ganga during the month of Madhava.
Verse 150 (padma.5.95.150)
vidhiṁ sa rājāpi tataścakāra vaiśākhamāsasya munipraṇītam patnyāsamaṁ puṇyadhiyā tameva saṁciṁtaya~llokapavitrakīrtiḥ
The king too then performed the rite of the month of Vaishakha as taught by the sage, together with his wife, with a mind fixed on merit, meditating on him alone — his fame purifying to the world.
