Varaha and Prithvi; the Brahmin and Yama: The Roads to Hell and Heaven

Chapter 95All chaptersChapter 97

Verse 1 (padma.5.96.1)

ṛṣaya ūcuḥ - sūtasūtamahāprājña jīvajīva śataṁsamāḥ yadvayaṁ puṇyasamayaṁ śrāvitā jagato hitam

The sages said: O greatly wise Suta, son of Suta, may you live a hundred years; you have made us hear this meritorious account, for the good of the world.

Verse 2 (padma.5.96.2)

vada bhūyo'pi bhūyiṣṭhaṁ pibāmastāvakaṁ vacaḥ pāyaṁpāyaṁ na tṛpyāmo vayaṁ sūta taduttamam

Speak yet more, again and again; we drink your words. O Suta, drinking that excellent speech again and again, we are not satisfied.

Verse 3 (padma.5.96.3)

sūta uvāca- atrāpyudāharaṁtīmamitihāsaṁ purātanam saṁvādamādilokasya jagatāṁ jagadīśituḥ

Suta said: In this matter too, people relate this ancient history — the dialogue of the primordial Person, Lord of the worlds, with the primal form of the world (the Earth).

Verse 4 (padma.5.96.4)

ṣaṭsahasrāṇicocchrāyo vistāreṇa punastrayam evaṁ navasahasrāṇi yojanānāṁ vidhāya ca

Six thousand yojanas in height, and again three thousand in breadth — thus, the earth measuring nine thousand yojanas—

Verse 5 (padma.5.96.5)

vāmayā daṁṣṭrayā gṛhya uddhṛtādau vasuṁdharā divyavarṣasahasraṁ vai daṁṣṭrayā dhāritā mahī

—was seized by his left tusk and lifted up in the beginning; Lord Varaha bore that earth on his tusk for a thousand divine years.

Verse 6 (padma.5.96.6)

dharmākhyānaprasaṁgena sovāca vinayādvibhum pṛthivyuvāca- ete dvādaśa māsā vai ṣaṣṭirdinaśatatrayam

In the course of a discourse on dharma, she spoke humbly to the Lord. Prithvi said: These twelve months, these three hundred and sixty days—

Verse 7 (padma.5.96.7)

eṣāṁ kimuttamaṁ puṇyaṁ priyaṁ ca tava keśava pavitraḥ kārtiko māsastulāsaṁsthe divākare

—among these, O Keshava, which is the most excellent and dear meritorious time to you? The Puranas declare the month of Kartika, when the sun is in Libra, to be sacred.

Verse 8 (padma.5.96.8)

makarasthe ravau māsaḥ purāṇe pāvanaḥ smṛtaḥ meṣasthe mādhavo māso bhāskare paṭhyate budhaiḥ

When the sun is in Capricorn, that month is declared sacred in the Puranas; when the sun is in Aries, the wise call it the month of Madhava.

Verse 9 (padma.5.96.9)

mārgaśīrṣo'pi māsānāṁ pāvanaḥ parikīrtitaḥ evaṁ māsāḥ pavitrāste vāsarāḥ kepi kīrtitāḥ

The month of Margashirsha too is proclaimed the most sacred among months. Thus these months, and also these days, have been declared sacred—

Verse 10 (padma.5.96.10)

yugādayo yugāṁtāśca tathā kalpādayo'pi ca sarvebhyo'pyadhikaṁ māsametebhyo vada pāvanam

—the beginnings and ends of the yugas, and the beginnings of the kalpas as well — tell me which month is more sacred than even all of these.

Verse 11 (padma.5.96.11)

sarvayajñamaya śrīmannekaṁ niścitya me vada varāha uvāca- vidhināvidhinācaiva ye yajaṁti narādhamāḥ

O blessed one, determine and tell me the one month that embodies all sacrifices. Varaha said: Whether base men worship duly or improperly—

Verse 12 (padma.5.96.12)

mādhave māsi māṁ bhaktyā taiśca pūjyo'smyahaṁ sadā hiraṇyākṣo varārohe mādhave tu madhurhata

—those who worship me with devotion in the month of Madhava, by them I am always worshipped. O fair one, both the demons Hiranyaksha and Madhu—

Verse 13 (padma.5.96.13)

ādidaityāvubhāvetau hatvā tvaṁ tu samuddhṛtā tretāyuge trayī dharmo jñānavarṇavyavasthitiḥ

—those two primordial demons, having been slain, you were then lifted up. In the Treta Yuga, the dharma of the three Vedas and the order of knowledge and the varnas—

Verse 14 (padma.5.96.14)

mādhave māsi saṁbhūtā tena me mādhavaḥpriyaḥ tretāyugaṁ tṛtīyāyāṁ śuklāyāṁ māsi mādhave

—arose precisely in the month of Madhava; for that reason Madhava is dear to me. The Treta Yuga began on the bright third day of the month of Madhava—

Verse 15 (padma.5.96.15)

pravṛttaṁ ca trayī dharmāḥ pravṛttāste pravarddhitāḥ akṣayā socyate loke tṛtīyā harivallabhā

—when the dharma of the three Vedas came into being and flourished. That third lunar day is called 'Akshaya' in the world, and is most dear to Hari.

Verse 16 (padma.5.96.16)

snāne dānārcane śrāddhe jape pūrvajatarppaṇe ye'rcayaṁti yavairviṣṇuṁ śrāddhaṁ kurvaṁti yatnataḥ

In bathing, giving, worship, shraddha, mantra-recitation, and ancestor-offering — those who worship Vishnu with barley, who diligently perform shraddha—

Verse 17 (padma.5.96.17)

teṣāṁ dadāmyahaṁ sarvaṁ yanmano'bhīṣṭamuttamam ye dadaṁtyapi dānāni dhanyāste dhārmikā narāḥ

—to them I give all that their heart most desires. Those who also give gifts — those righteous men are blessed.

Verse 18 (padma.5.96.18)

ye yajaṁti harernityamadhvarairvividhairapi mādhave yajate yo māṁ tebhyastadadhikaṁ phalam

Those who ever worship Hari with various sacrifices — and he who worships me in the month of Madhava receives a fruit even greater than theirs.

Verse 19 (padma.5.96.19)

snānaṁ dānaṁ japo homastapo yajña vratādikam vaiśākhe yatkṛtaṁ devi tasya puṇyaphalaṁ śṛṇu

O goddess, hear the meritorious fruit of bathing, giving, recitation, fire-offering, austerity, sacrifice, and vows performed in Vaishakha.

Verse 20 (padma.5.96.20)

manvaṁtarāṇāṁ koṭyastu daśapaṁca ca sapta ca matsānnidhyagatāstepi tiṣṭhaṁti bhayavarjitāḥ

Even twenty-two crore manvantaras — all of them, having attained my presence, abide free of fear.

Verse 21 (padma.5.96.21)

yadyapi syurgrahāḥ sarve krūrā janmavyayāṣṭakāḥ prātaḥsnānena vaiśākhe sarve saumyā bhavaṁti te

Even if all eight fierce planets afflict a person's birth and wealth, through morning bathing in Vaishakha all of them become benign.

Verse 22 (padma.5.96.22)

vaiśākhe māsi yo viprānbhojayedbhaktitatparaḥ sikthesikthe bhavettṛptiḥ pitṝṇāṁ yugasaṁkhyayā

He who, devoted, feeds Brahmins in the month of Vaishakha — with every mouthful, his ancestors attain satisfaction for the count of an age.

Verse 23 (padma.5.96.23)

yacchaṁti tatra madhurādhikabhojanāni ye vāyavāśana tilodaka bhojanāni chatrāṁbarāṇi caraṇocitarakṣaṇāni dhanyāsta eva paritoṣakarāhi viṣṇoḥ

Those who give sweet and abundant food there, who give travelers food and sesame-water, umbrellas, garments, and footwear for protection — they alone are blessed, who bring contentment to Vishnu.

Verse 24 (padma.5.96.24)

viśeṣādiha dātavyāstilā madhusamanvitāḥ dharmāya bṛhate dīrgha duritakṣaya hetave

Especially here, sesame mixed with honey should be given — it is the cause of great dharma and the destruction of long-accumulated sin.

Verse 25 (padma.5.96.25)

evaṁkṛte tu yatpuṇyaṁ prāpyate manujaiśca taiḥ tatkairgaṇayituṁ śakyaṁ varṣakoṭiśatairapi

The merit that men obtain by so doing — who could reckon it even in a hundred crore years?

Verse 26 (padma.5.96.26)

putrapautrādisaṁpatti dīrghāyūṁṣi yathepsitam ihāpnoti paratrāpi māmeva pratipadyate

Wealth of sons and grandsons, long life as desired — he obtains this here, and in the next world too he attains me alone.

Verse 27 (padma.5.96.27)

anekajanmārjita pātakāvalī vilīyate mādhava majjanena janasya tatroṣasi puṇyatīrthe yathāvidhānaṁ śrayate tathā vā

The chain of sins acquired across many births dissolves through bathing in the month of Madhava — whether a person bathes at that sacred ford at dawn according to full ritual or not.

Verse 28 (padma.5.96.28)

yaḥ parityajya vaiśākhaṁ vratamanyadupācaret sa karasthaṁ mahāratnaṁ hitvā loṣṭaṁ hi yācate

He who abandons the Vaishakha vow to follow another instead is like one who discards a great jewel already in hand and begs for a lump of clay.

Verse 29 (padma.5.96.29)

sūtauvāca- evaṁ sa bhagavānpūrvamādidevo vadadvibhuḥ mādhavaṁ māsamuddiśya jagatyāṁ jagatīdharaḥ

Suta said: Thus, O Brahmins, did that Lord, the primordial God, sustainer of the world, first declare this concerning the month of Madhava, here on earth.

Verse 30 (padma.5.96.30)

kimatra bahunoktena na tadasti mahīsurāḥ yadaprāpyaṁ bhavenmāsi mādhave mādhavārcanāt

What use in saying more? There is nothing whatsoever that cannot be attained in the month of Madhava through the worship of Madhava.

Verse 31 (padma.5.96.31)

śṛṇudhvaṁ ca purāvṛttamihārthe paramādbhutam brāhmaṇasya ca saṁvādaṁ yamasya ca mahātmanaḥ

Hear now a most wondrous ancient account on this subject — the dialogue between a Brahmin and the great soul Yama.

Verse 32 (padma.5.96.32)

madhyadeśe mahāgrāmo brāhmaṇānāṁ babhūva ha gaṁgāyamunayormadhye yāmunasya gireradhaḥ

In the Middle Country, between the Ganga and the Yamuna, below the Yamuna's mountain, there was a great village of Brahmins.

Verse 33 (padma.5.96.33)

vidvāṁsastatra bhūyiṣṭhā brāhmaṇāścāvasaṁstadā atha prāha yamaḥ kaṁcitpuruṣaṁ kṛṣṇapiṁgalam

Many learned Brahmins dwelt there. Then Yama spoke to a certain man of blackish-tawny hue—

Verse 34 (padma.5.96.34)

raktākṣamūrddhvaromāṇaṁ kākajaṁghākṣināsikam gaccha tvaṁ bho mahāgrāmaṁ gatvā brāhmaṇamānaya

—red-eyed, hair standing on end, with the legs, eyes, and nose of a crow: "Go to that great village and bring a Brahmin—

Verse 35 (padma.5.96.35)

vasiṣṭhagotrasaṁbhūtaṁ nāmato yajñadattakam śame niviṣṭaṁ vidvāṁsaṁ yajñakarmaviśāradam

"—born in the Vasishtha gotra, named Yajnadatta, established in tranquility, learned, skilled in sacrificial rites — bring him."

Verse 36 (padma.5.96.36)

nacānyamānayethāstvaṁ sagotraṁ tasya pārśvataḥ sahitādṛgguṇastena tulyo'dhyayana janmanā

"You are not to bring instead any other of his gotra, even one equal to him in qualities, learning, and birth—"

Verse 37 (padma.5.96.37)

ākṛtyā ca tathā cihnaiḥ samastenaiva sattamaḥ tamānaya yathoddiṣṭā pūjā kāryā hi tasya me

"—even wholly identical in form and marks; bring that very man as designated — worship is to be done to him by me."

Verse 38 (padma.5.96.38)

sa gatvā pratikūlaṁ tu cakāra yamaśāsanam tameva mānayāmāsa pratiṣiddho yamena yaḥ

He went and acted contrary to Yama's command — the very person Yama had forbidden, that one he respectfully brought instead.

Verse 39 (padma.5.96.39)

tasmai yamaḥ samutthāya pūjāṁ kṛtvā ca dharmavit provāca nīyatāmeṣa so'nya ānīyatāmiti

Yama, knower of dharma, rose and honored him, and then said: "Take this one back; bring the other."

Verse 40 (padma.5.96.40)

sūta uvāca- evamukte tu vacane dharmarājena sa dvijaḥ uvāca dharmarājaṁ taṁ nirviṇṇo gamanāya vai

Suta said: When Dharmaraja spoke thus, that Brahmin, dejected, spoke to Dharmaraja about his return.

Verse 41 (padma.5.96.41)

brāhmaṇa uvāca- kasmādahamihānītaḥ kasmātprerayase punaḥ gaṁtuṁ naivotsahe tatra martyalokaṁ punaḥ prabho

The Brahmin said: For what reason was I brought here, and why am I now being sent back again? O lord, I no longer have the desire to return to the mortal world.

Verse 42 (padma.5.96.42)

yama uvāca- iha kṣīṇāyuṣāṁ puṁsāṁ vāsaḥ puṇyavatāṁ bhavet ayaṁ vai dharmarājasya loko dharmaḥ prakīrtitaḥ

Yama said: This is the abode of meritorious men whose lifespan has come to its end; this is truly the realm of Dharmaraja, called 'Dharma.'

Verse 43 (padma.5.96.43)

saukhyabhūmiriyaṁ sarvā dharmarājo'hamīśvaraḥ puṇyāpuṇyānusāreṇa jaṁtūnāṁ sukhaduḥkhadaḥ

This whole region is a land of happiness; I, Dharmaraja, am its lord; according to merit and demerit, I give beings happiness or sorrow.

Verse 44 (padma.5.96.44)

pāpināṁ yamarūpo'smi nṛṇāṁ nirayadāyakaḥ tathā puṇyavatāṁ saukhya svargado dharma mūrtimān

To sinners I appear in the form of Yama, the giver of hell to men; but to the meritorious I am the giver of happiness and heaven, the very embodiment of dharma.

Verse 45 (padma.5.96.45)

gaccha vipra tvamadyaiva nilayaṁ svaṁ yathāgataḥ adyāpi daśavarṣāṇāmāyuste parivartate

O Brahmin, go this very day back to your own abode, as you came; even now ten years of your life remain.

Verse 46 (padma.5.96.46)

kṣaye tavāyuṣaḥ prāptirlokasyāsya bhaviṣyati praṣṭavyaṁ ca tvayā hyanyatpṛcchasva prabravīmi te

When your lifespan ends, you shall attain this world. Ask whatever else you wish; I shall tell you.

Verse 47 (padma.5.96.47)

brāhmaṇa uvāca- yatkṛtvā sumahatpuṇyaṁ svargaḥ syādbrūhi tanmama sarvasya hi pramāṇaṁtvaṁ dharmādharmaviniścaye

The Brahmin said: Tell me that by performing which great merit heaven is attained; for you alone are the authority for all in determining dharma and adharma.

Verse 48 (padma.5.96.48)

yadi deva mayā samyaggaṁtavyaṁ nijamaṁdire tadbrūhi karmaṇā kena pataṁti narake narāḥ

O god, if I am indeed to go properly to my own abode, then tell me — by what deeds do men fall into hell?

Verse 49 (padma.5.96.49)

vrajaṁti kena vai svargaṁ tatsarvaṁ kṛpayā vada yama uvāca- karmaṇā manasā vācā ye dharmavimukhā narāḥ

"And by what do men go to heaven — tell me all this, kindly." Yama said: Those men who, in mind, speech, and deed, turn away from dharma—

Verse 50 (padma.5.96.50)

viṣṇubhaktivihīnā ye te vai nirayagāminaḥ paśyaṁti bhedabuddhyā ye brahmāṇaṁ śaṁkaraṁ harim

—and those devoid of devotion to Vishnu, are indeed bound for hell. Those who look upon Brahma, Shankara, and Hari with a divisive mind—

Verse 51 (padma.5.96.51)

viraktā viṣṇuvidyāsu narā nirayagāminaḥ kuladeśocitaṁ karma yastyaktvānyatsamācaret

—and men indifferent to the knowledge of Vishnu, are bound for hell. He who abandons the proper conduct of his own family and country to follow another—

Verse 52 (padma.5.96.52)

kāmādvā yadi vā mohātsa yāti narakaṁ naraḥ ayājyayājakaścaiva yājyānāṁ ca vivarjakaḥ

—driven by desire or delusion, that man goes to hell. He who officiates as priest for the unworthy, and rejects those worthy of his service—

Verse 53 (padma.5.96.53)

virato viṣṇuvidyāsu sa bhuṁkte narakānbahūn adatvā pitṛdevebhyo viprebhyo martyabaṁdhuṣu

—and is indifferent to the knowledge of Vishnu, suffers many hells. He who, without giving anything to ancestors, gods, Brahmins, or worldly kin—

Verse 54 (padma.5.96.54)

sadhano mriyate pāpaḥ sa yāti narakānbahūn sarvāṇyannāni siddhāni pākabhedaṁ karoti yaḥ

—dies wealthy yet sinful, goes to many hells. He who shows favoritism among all the prepared foods—

Verse 55 (padma.5.96.55)

avaiśvadevaṁ bhuṁjīta sa yāti narakaṁ ciram bahudroheṇa bhūtānāṁ ye'jayaṁti dhanaṁ dvija

—he who eats without first performing the Vaishvadeva offering goes to hell for a long time. O Brahmin, those who earn wealth by greatly harming living beings—

Verse 56 (padma.5.96.56)

dhanavaṁto nirayagā dāṁbhikā duḥkhabhāginaḥ nāstikyādatha vā lobhānmohātkāle yathodite

—those wealthy, hypocritical men are destined for hell and share of sorrow. Those who, out of unbelief, greed, or delusion, at the proper time—

Verse 57 (padma.5.96.57)

—do not perform shraddha with devotion, are cooked in hells. That sinner who creates an obstacle in wealth being given to Brahmins—

Verse 58 (padma.5.96.58)

vighnamācarate yo'sau naro nirayago bhavet sāmānya dakṣiṇāṁ labdhvā gṛhṇātyeko vimohataḥ

—that man is bound for hell. He who, out of delusion, alone takes for himself from a communal offering—
