Verse 1 (padma.6.1.1)

ॐ श्रीविष्णवे नमः । ॐ श्रीवेदव्यासाय नमः । ॐ नारायणं नमस्कृत्य नरं चैव नरोत्तमम् । देवीं सरस्वतीं व्यासं ततो जयमुदीरयेत्

oṁ śrīviṣṇave namaḥ oṁ śrīvedavyāsāya namaḥ oṁ nārāyaṇaṁ namaskṛtya naraṁ caiva narottamam devīṁ sarasvatīṁ vyāsaṁ tato jayamudīrayet

Om, salutation to Sri Vishnu. Om, salutation to Sri Vedavyasa. Having bowed to Narayana, to Nara the best of men, and to the goddess Sarasvati, one should then invoke Vyasa and utter the word of victory.

Verse 2 (padma.6.1.2)

अज्ञानतिमिरांधस्य ज्ञानांजनशलाकया । चक्षुरुन्मीलितं येन तस्मै श्रीगुरवे नमः

ajñānatimirāṁdhasya jñānāṁjanaśalākayā cakṣurunmīlitaṁ yena tasmai śrīgurave namaḥ

To that revered Guru who opened the eyes blinded by the darkness of ignorance with the collyrium-stick of knowledge, salutations.

Verse 3 (padma.6.1.3)

ऋषय ऊचुः । श्रुतं पातालखंडं च त्वयाख्यातं विदांवर । नानाख्यानसमायुक्तं परमानंददायकम्

ṛṣaya ūcuḥ śrutaṁ pātālakhaṁḍaṁ ca tvayākhyātaṁ vidāṁvara nānākhyānasamāyuktaṁ paramānaṁdadāyakam

The sages said: We have heard the Patala Khanda as narrated by you, O best of the knowing, filled with many tales and the giver of supreme bliss.

Verse 4 (padma.6.1.4)

अधुना श्रोतुमिच्छामो भगवद्भक्तिवर्द्धनम् । पाद्मे यच्छेषमस्तीह तद्ब्रूहि कृपया गुरो

adhunā śrotumicchāmo bhagavadbhaktivarddhanam pādme yaccheṣamastīha tadbrūhi kṛpayā guro

Now we wish to hear that which increases devotion to the Lord — whatever remains still untold of the Padma Purana. Kindly tell us that, O Guru.

Verse 5 (padma.6.1.5)

सूत उवाच । शृणुध्वं मुनयः सर्वे यदुक्तं शंकरेण हि । पृच्छते नारदायैव विज्ञानं पापनाशनम्

sūta uvāca śṛṇudhvaṁ munayaḥ sarve yaduktaṁ śaṁkareṇa hi pṛcchate nāradāyaiva vijñānaṁ pāpanāśanam

Suta said: Listen, all you sages, to what Shankara spoke when Narada asked him — that sin-destroying knowledge I shall now relate.

Verse 6 (padma.6.1.6)

एकादा नारदो लोकान्पर्यटन्भगवत्प्रियः । गतोऽद्रि मंदरं शंभुं प्रष्टुं किंचिन्मनोगतम्

ekādā nārado lokānparyaṭanbhagavatpriyaḥ gato'dri maṁdaraṁ śaṁbhuṁ praṣṭuṁ kiṁcinmanogatam

Once, Narada, dear to the Lord, wandering through the worlds, went to Mount Mandara to ask Shambhu something that was on his mind.

Verse 7 (padma.6.1.7)

तत्रासीनमुमानाथं प्रणिपत्य शिवाज्ञया । उपविष्टः समादिष्ट आसनेऽभिमुखो विभोः

tatrāsīnamumānāthaṁ praṇipatya śivājñayā upaviṣṭaḥ samādiṣṭa āsane'bhimukho vibhoḥ

Having bowed, by Shiva's own leave, to the Lord of Uma seated there, he sat down on the seat offered to him, facing the all-pervading Lord.

Verse 8 (padma.6.1.8)

नारद उवाच। पप्रच्छ इदमेवेशं यन्मां पृच्छथ सत्तमाः । भगवन्देवदेवेश पार्वतीश जगद्गुरो

nārada uvāca papraccha idameveśaṁ yanmāṁ pṛcchatha sattamāḥ bhagavandevadeveśa pārvatīśa jagadguro

Narada said: O Lord, God of gods, Lord of Parvati, Guru of the world! What you now ask of me is the very thing I once asked the Lord himself —

Verse 9 (padma.6.1.9)

भगवत्तत्वविज्ञानं येन स्यात्तन्ममादिश । शिव उवाच। शृणु नारद वक्ष्यामि पुराणं वेदसंमितम्

bhagavattatvavijñānaṁ yena syāttanmamādiśa śiva uvāca śṛṇu nārada vakṣyāmi purāṇaṁ vedasaṁmitam

'Tell me that knowledge of the Divine's true nature by which...' Shiva said: Listen, Narada, I shall recount the Purana that is equal in authority to the Veda,

Verse 10 (padma.6.1.10)

यच्छ्रुत्वा सर्वपापेभ्यो मुच्यते नात्र संशयः । प्रथमोत्तरकीर्तिः स्यात्पर्वताख्यानमेव च

yacchrutvā sarvapāpebhyo mucyate nātra saṁśayaḥ prathamottarakīrtiḥ syātparvatākhyānameva ca

hearing which a person is, without doubt, freed from all sins. First shall come the glory belonging to the Uttara Khanda, and likewise the legend of the mountain.

Verse 11 (padma.6.1.11)

जालंधरं तथाख्यानं श्रीशैलाख्यं ततः परम् । हरिद्वारस्य व्याख्यानं विष्णुपादोद्भवां तथा

jālaṁdharaṁ tathākhyānaṁ śrīśailākhyaṁ tataḥ param haridvārasya vyākhyānaṁ viṣṇupādodbhavāṁ tathā

Then the tale of Jalandhara, followed by the account of Shri Shaila; the description of Haridwar, and the story of Vishnupada as well.

Verse 12 (padma.6.1.12)

प्रयागतीर्थं ते वक्ष्ये दशाश्वमेधिकं च तत् । तुलसीमहिमाचैव शंखचक्रगदादिकम्

prayāgatīrthaṁ te vakṣye daśāśvamedhikaṁ ca tat tulasīmahimācaiva śaṁkhacakragadādikam

I shall tell you of the Prayaga tirtha and the Dashashvamedha tirtha, along with the glory of Tulsi and the rule for bearing the conch, discus, mace and the like.

Verse 13 (padma.6.1.13)

द्वारकायास्तथाख्यानं महोत्सवविधिस्ततः । तडाकजं तथा पुण्यं वापीकूपप्रपादिकम्

dvārakāyāstathākhyānaṁ mahotsavavidhistataḥ taḍākajaṁ tathā puṇyaṁ vāpīkūpaprapādikam

Likewise the tale of Dvaraka, then the procedure of its great festival; the merit of digging tanks, and of building stepwells, wells, water-sheds and the like.

Verse 14 (padma.6.1.14)

गाणपत्यं ततो वक्ष्ये वैष्णवागममेव च । जीर्णोद्धारस्य माहात्म्यं मंदाकिनी समागमम्

gāṇapatyaṁ tato vakṣye vaiṣṇavāgamameva ca jīrṇoddhārasya māhātmyaṁ maṁdākinī samāgamam

Then I shall speak of the worship of Ganapati and the Vaishnava scriptural tradition; the glory of restoring what has fallen into ruin, and the account of the confluence at the Mandakini.

Verse 15 (padma.6.1.15)

साभ्रमत्यास्तु माहात्म्यं माहात्म्यं तीरजं तथा । स्त्रीशूद्राणां तथा धर्मं तथा त्याज्यैश्च धारणम्

sābhramatyāstu māhātmyaṁ māhātmyaṁ tīrajaṁ tathā strīśūdrāṇāṁ tathā dharmaṁ tathā tyājyaiśca dhāraṇam

The glory of the river Sabharamati and of the merit born on its banks; and the duties proper to women and shudras, and what is to be renounced and what upheld.

Verse 16 (padma.6.1.16)

उमामहेशसंवादे प्रोक्तं नामसहस्रकम् । कैलासात्तत्समानीतं नारदेनाग्रजन्मना

umāmaheśasaṁvāde proktaṁ nāmasahasrakam kailāsāttatsamānītaṁ nāradenāgrajanmanā

In the dialogue between Uma and Mahesha, the Thousand Names were declared — that hymn the firstborn Narada brought down from Kailasa.

Verse 17 (padma.6.1.17)

लोकानां ब्राह्मणानां च क्षत्रियाणां विशेषतः । स्त्रीशूद्राणां विशेषेण पठितव्यं समाहितैः

lokānāṁ brāhmaṇānāṁ ca kṣatriyāṇāṁ viśeṣataḥ strīśūdrāṇāṁ viśeṣeṇa paṭhitavyaṁ samāhitaiḥ

It is to be recited with full attention by all people — brahmins and kshatriyas especially, and by women and shudras as well.

Verse 18 (padma.6.1.18)

इदं पवित्रं परमं पुण्यमायुष्यवर्धनम् । पठितव्यं विशेषेण विष्णोः सायुज्यमाप्नुयात्

idaṁ pavitraṁ paramaṁ puṇyamāyuṣyavardhanam paṭhitavyaṁ viśeṣeṇa viṣṇoḥ sāyujyamāpnuyāt

This is most sacred, supremely meritorious, and life-lengthening; reciting it with special devotion, one attains union with Vishnu.

Verse 19 (padma.6.1.19)

विष्णोर्नामसहस्रं तत्पावनं भुवि विश्रुतम् । चतुर्विंशतिमूर्तीनां स्थानकानीह संवदेत्

viṣṇornāmasahasraṁ tatpāvanaṁ bhuvi viśrutam caturviṁśatimūrtīnāṁ sthānakānīha saṁvadet

This Thousand Names of Vishnu, purifying and renowned upon the earth — I shall now describe the sacred abodes of his twenty-four forms.

Verse 20 (padma.6.1.20)

तेषां च मातापितरावंतरं च ब्रवीम्यहम् । गोत्रं वेदांश्चतेषां वै कर्माणीह तथैव च

teṣāṁ ca mātāpitarāvaṁtaraṁ ca bravīmyaham gotraṁ vedāṁścateṣāṁ vai karmāṇīha tathaiva ca

I shall also tell, along the way, of their parents' lineage — their gotra, their Vedas, and their sacred duties as well.

Verse 21 (padma.6.1.21)

स्त्रियस्तेषां प्रवक्ष्यामि यथाविज्ञानदर्शनात् । चतुर्विंशत्येकादशीनां द्वादशीनां प्रभावताम्

striyasteṣāṁ pravakṣyāmi yathāvijñānadarśanāt caturviṁśatyekādaśīnāṁ dvādaśīnāṁ prabhāvatām

I shall describe their consorts as it is known and witnessed, and likewise the power of the twenty-four Ekadashis and Dvadashis.

Verse 22 (padma.6.1.22)

गोदावर्याश्च माहात्म्यं शंखचक्रादिधारणम् । ब्राह्मणानां विशेषेण धारणं विधिपूर्वकम्

godāvaryāśca māhātmyaṁ śaṁkhacakrādidhāraṇam brāhmaṇānāṁ viśeṣeṇa dhāraṇaṁ vidhipūrvakam

The glory of the Godavari, and the rule for bearing the conch and discus; and how brahmins in particular should bear them, according to due rite.

Verse 23 (padma.6.1.23)

यमुनायाश्च माहात्म्यं गंडिकायास्तथा मुने । वेत्रवत्यास्तु माहात्म्यं वच्म्यहं ते न संशयः

yamunāyāśca māhātmyaṁ gaṁḍikāyāstathā mune vetravatyāstu māhātmyaṁ vacmyahaṁ te na saṁśayaḥ

O sage, the glory of the Yamuna, of the Gandaki, and likewise of the Vetravati — all this I shall tell you without doubt.

Verse 24 (padma.6.1.24)

गिल्लितीर्थोद्भवं पुण्यं शिलाक्षेत्रं महच्च यत् । तत्सर्वं संप्रवक्ष्यामि खंडे उत्तरसंज्ञके

gillitīrthodbhavaṁ puṇyaṁ śilākṣetraṁ mahacca yat tatsarvaṁ saṁpravakṣyāmi khaṁḍe uttarasaṁjñake

The merit born at Gillitirtha, and the great Shila-kshetra — all this I shall fully declare within this section called the Uttara Khanda.

Verse 25 (padma.6.1.25)

अर्बुदेश्वरमाहात्म्यं तत्र तीर्थादिकं च यत् । सरस्वत्याश्च माहात्म्यं सिद्धक्षेत्रादिकं च यत्

arbudeśvaramāhātmyaṁ tatra tīrthādikaṁ ca yat sarasvatyāśca māhātmyaṁ siddhakṣetrādikaṁ ca yat

The glory of Arbudeshvara and the tirthas there; and likewise the glory of the Sarasvati and the sites of accomplishment.

Verse 26 (padma.6.1.26)

पद्मनाभसमुत्पत्तिं तुलस्याश्चैव धारणम् । गोपीचंदनमाहात्म्यं पट्टपूजां तथैव च

padmanābhasamutpattiṁ tulasyāścaiva dhāraṇam gopīcaṁdanamāhātmyaṁ paṭṭapūjāṁ tathaiva ca

The origin of Padmanabha, and the rule for bearing Tulsi; the glory of Gopichandana, and the worship of the sacred tablet as well.

Verse 27 (padma.6.1.27)

निरंजनस्य माहात्म्यं तथा विज्ञानदर्शनम् । तत्र दीपप्रदानं च धूपदानं विशेषतः

niraṁjanasya māhātmyaṁ tathā vijñānadarśanam tatra dīpapradānaṁ ca dhūpadānaṁ viśeṣataḥ

The glory of Niranjana, and the vision of true knowledge; and there, the offering of lamps and, in particular, the offering of incense.

Verse 28 (padma.6.1.28)

कार्तिकस्याथ माहात्म्यं माहात्म्यं माघजं तथा । सर्वेषां च व्रतानां च माहात्म्यं विधिपूर्वकम्

kārtikasyātha māhātmyaṁ māhātmyaṁ māghajaṁ tathā sarveṣāṁ ca vratānāṁ ca māhātmyaṁ vidhipūrvakam

Then the glory of the month of Kartika, and likewise of the merit born in Magha; and the glory of all the vows, set forth in due order.

Verse 29 (padma.6.1.29)

शृणु नारद वक्ष्यामि जगन्नाथाख्यमुत्तमम् । यं दृष्ट्वा मुच्यते लोको ब्रह्महत्यादिपातकात्

śṛṇu nārada vakṣyāmi jagannāthākhyamuttamam yaṁ dṛṣṭvā mucyate loko brahmahatyādipātakāt

Listen, Narada, I shall tell the sublime account named after Jagannatha, the mere sight of whom frees a person from sins such as the killing of a brahmin.

Verse 30 (padma.6.1.30)

यत्र सिद्धं तथा भुक्तं पारलौकिकदायकम् । ब्राह्मणा यत्र भुंजन्ति वेदशास्त्र विशारदः

yatra siddhaṁ tathā bhuktaṁ pāralaukikadāyakam brāhmaṇā yatra bhuṁjanti vedaśāstra viśāradaḥ

There even the accomplished ones partake of that food which bestows the fruit of the world beyond, and there brahmins learned in Veda and shastra dine.

Verse 31 (padma.6.1.31)

अन्येषां चैव लोकानां का कथा चैव सुव्रत । पंचविंशत्यत्र नागा नर्तक्यो विविधास्तथा

anyeṣāṁ caiva lokānāṁ kā kathā caiva suvrata paṁcaviṁśatyatra nāgā nartakyo vividhāstathā

O virtuous one, what then to say of other people? There are twenty-five nagas there, and dancers of many kinds as well.

Verse 32 (padma.6.1.32)

ब्रह्महत्या बालहत्या गवांहत्या तथैव च । ताः सर्वा विलयं यांति जगन्नाथस्य दर्शनात्

brahmahatyā bālahatyā gavāṁhatyā tathaiva ca tāḥ sarvā vilayaṁ yāṁti jagannāthasya darśanāt

The sins of killing a brahmin, killing a child, killing a cow, and the like — all of these dissolve at the mere sight of Jagannatha.

Verse 33 (padma.6.1.33)

जगन्नाथेत्युच्चरञ्जंतुर्महापापैः प्रमुच्यते । विष्णोः पूजनकं पुष्पैस्तन्माहात्म्यमपि ब्रुवे

jagannāthetyuccarañjaṁturmahāpāpaiḥ pramucyate viṣṇoḥ pūjanakaṁ puṣpaistanmāhātmyamapi bruve

The very utterance of 'Jagannatha' frees a being from great sins; I shall now also tell the glory of worshipping Vishnu with flowers.

Verse 34 (padma.6.1.34)

पर्वतानां वर्णनं च देशानां वर्णनं तथा । गोपूजनादिमाहात्म्यं सिद्धानां चैव पूजनम्

parvatānāṁ varṇanaṁ ca deśānāṁ varṇanaṁ tathā gopūjanādimāhātmyaṁ siddhānāṁ caiva pūjanam

The description of mountains, and likewise of countries; the glory of cow-worship and the like, and the worship of the siddhas as well.

Verse 35 (padma.6.1.35)

सिक्थे दत्ते तु यत्पुण्यं तत्सर्वं प्रवदाम्यहम् । कदलीगर्भदानं च वृक्षदानं ततः परम्

sikthe datte tu yatpuṇyaṁ tatsarvaṁ pravadāmyaham kadalīgarbhadānaṁ ca vṛkṣadānaṁ tataḥ param

Whatever merit is gained by the offering of a food-ball, all that I shall relate — and likewise the gift of a plantain-womb, and after that the gift of trees.

Verse 36 (padma.6.1.36)

अश्वदानं हस्तिदानं जपमाहात्म्यमुत्तमम् । मंत्रदीक्षागमं चैव गुरोर्लक्षणमेव च

aśvadānaṁ hastidānaṁ japamāhātmyamuttamam maṁtradīkṣāgamaṁ caiva gurorlakṣaṇameva ca

The gift of a horse, the gift of an elephant, the supreme glory of japa; the tradition of mantra-initiation, and the marks of a true guru.

Verse 37 (padma.6.1.37)

शिष्यस्य लक्षणं प्रोक्तं यथा पौराणिका विदुः । चरणोदकमाहात्म्यं पितृश्राद्धादिकं च यत्

śiṣyasya lakṣaṇaṁ proktaṁ yathā paurāṇikā viduḥ caraṇodakamāhātmyaṁ pitṛśrāddhādikaṁ ca yat

The marks of a disciple as the knowers of the Puranas have declared; and the glory of the water that has washed the feet of the guru, and the rites of ancestor-worship.

Verse 38 (padma.6.1.38)

पितृक्षयाहदानं च नीलोत्सर्गविधिस्ततः । ग्रहणं चंद्रसूर्यस्य तत्र दानं च यद्भवेत्

pitṛkṣayāhadānaṁ ca nīlotsargavidhistataḥ grahaṇaṁ caṁdrasūryasya tatra dānaṁ ca yadbhavet

The gift given on the anniversary of the ancestors' passing, and then the rite of releasing the blue bull; the eclipse of moon and sun, and whatever giving is proper then.

Verse 39 (padma.6.1.39)

शालग्रामस्य दानस्य माहात्म्यं माल्यगंधयोः । दशम्यैकादशीवेधं द्वादशी हरिवासरम्

śālagrāmasya dānasya māhātmyaṁ mālyagaṁdhayoḥ daśamyaikādaśīvedhaṁ dvādaśī harivāsaram

The glory of the gift of the Shaligrama stone, and of offering garland and fragrance; the overlap of the tenth and eleventh tithis, the twelfth, and the day sacred to Hari.

Verse 40 (padma.6.1.40)

तेषां चैव तुमाहात्म्यं रुद्रनामादिकं च यत् । मथुरायाश्च माहात्म्यं कुरुक्षेत्रादिकं तथा

teṣāṁ caiva tumāhātmyaṁ rudranāmādikaṁ ca yat mathurāyāśca māhātmyaṁ kurukṣetrādikaṁ tathā

The glory of all these, and of the names of Rudra and so forth; the glory of Mathura, and likewise of Kurukshetra.

Verse 41 (padma.6.1.41)

सेतुबंधस्य चाख्यानं श्रीरामेश्वरजं तथा । त्र्यंबकस्य च माहात्म्यं पंचवट्याश्च यत्फलम्

setubaṁdhasya cākhyānaṁ śrīrāmeśvarajaṁ tathā tryaṁbakasya ca māhātmyaṁ paṁcavaṭyāśca yatphalam

The tale of Setubandha, and the merit born at Shri Rameshvara; the glory of Tryambaka, and the fruit belonging to Panchavati.

Verse 42 (padma.6.1.42)

दंडकारण्यमाहात्म्यं शृणु वाडवसत्तम । दंडकारण्यमाहात्म्यं नृसिंहोत्पत्तिकारणम्

daṁḍakāraṇyamāhātmyaṁ śṛṇu vāḍavasattama daṁḍakāraṇyamāhātmyaṁ nṛsiṁhotpattikāraṇam

Listen, O best of brahmins, to the glory of the Dandaka forest — the glory of the Dandaka forest again, and the cause of Narasimha's very origin.

Verse 43 (padma.6.1.43)

गीतायाश्चैव माहात्म्यं तथा भागवतस्य च । कालिंद्याश्चैव माहात्म्यमिन्द्रप्रस्थस्य वर्णनम्

gītāyāścaiva māhātmyaṁ tathā bhāgavatasya ca kāliṁdyāścaiva māhātmyamindraprasthasya varṇanam

The glory of the Gita, and likewise of the Bhagavata; the glory of the Kalindi, and the description of Indraprastha.

Verse 44 (padma.6.1.44)

रुक्मांगदचरित्रं तु महिमा वैष्णवस्य च । वैष्णवे ह्येकभुक्ते तु शृणु वाडवसत्तम

rukmāṁgadacaritraṁ tu mahimā vaiṣṇavasya ca vaiṣṇave hyekabhukte tu śṛṇu vāḍavasattama

The story of Rukmangada, the glory of Vaishnavas; and listen, O best of brahmins, to the glory of feeding a single Vaishnava.

Verse 45 (padma.6.1.45)

ससागरां च पृथिवीं दत्त्वा चैव तु यत्फलम् । तत्फलं समवाप्नोति भुक्ते ह्येके तु वैष्णवे

sasāgarāṁ ca pṛthivīṁ dattvā caiva tu yatphalam tatphalaṁ samavāpnoti bhukte hyeke tu vaiṣṇave

Whatever fruit is obtained by giving away the whole earth with its oceans — that very fruit is gained by feeding a single Vaishnava.

Verse 46 (padma.6.1.46)

सात्विकाः सत्त्वसंपन्ना राजसाः कामुकाः स्मृताः । तामसा अधमाः प्रोक्ता वैष्णवानां तु लक्षणम्

sātvikāḥ sattvasaṁpannā rājasāḥ kāmukāḥ smṛtāḥ tāmasā adhamāḥ proktā vaiṣṇavānāṁ tu lakṣaṇam

Sattvic Vaishnavas are endowed with goodness; rajasic ones are said to be full of desire; tamasic ones are called the lowest — this is the classification of Vaishnavas.

Verse 47 (padma.6.1.47)

ब्राह्मणा वैष्णवा ये तु वेदधर्मपरायणाः । तेषां माहात्म्यं वक्ष्यामि यथोक्तं चैव नारद

brāhmaṇā vaiṣṇavā ye tu vedadharmaparāyaṇāḥ teṣāṁ māhātmyaṁ vakṣyāmi yathoktaṁ caiva nārada

Those brahmins who are Vaishnavas devoted to Vedic dharma — their glory too I shall tell, O Narada, exactly as it has been declared.

Verse 48 (padma.6.1.48)

विष्णुनिंदारता ये वै द्रव्यलोभेन सत्तम । तेषां पापं तु वक्ष्यामि सांप्रतं ऋषिसत्तम

viṣṇuniṁdāratā ye vai dravyalobhena sattama teṣāṁ pāpaṁ tu vakṣyāmi sāṁprataṁ ṛṣisattama

O best one, those who out of greed for wealth delight in reviling Vishnu — their sin too I shall now relate, O foremost of sages.

Verse 49 (padma.6.1.49)

ज्वालामुख्यास्तथाख्यानं हिमशैलेक्षणं तथा । ब्रह्मोत्पत्तिस्तु वै यत्र तं प्रदेशं वदाम्यहम्

jvālāmukhyāstathākhyānaṁ himaśailekṣaṇaṁ tathā brahmotpattistu vai yatra taṁ pradeśaṁ vadāmyaham

The tale of Jvalamukhi, and the sight of the Himalaya; and the place where Brahma's origin occurred — that region too I shall describe.

Verse 50 (padma.6.1.50)

कायस्थानां समुत्पतिर्गयाव्याख्यानमेव च । गदाधरस्वरूपं च फल्गुवर्णनमेव च

kāyasthānāṁ samutpatirgayāvyākhyānameva ca gadādharasvarūpaṁ ca phalguvarṇanameva ca

The origin of the Kayasthas, and the account of Gaya; the form of Gadadhara, and the description of the river Phalgu as well.

Verse 51 (padma.6.1.51)

एतेषां चैव माहात्म्यं पाद्मे दृष्टं तथा श्रुतम् । महाबोधस्वरूपं च सकल्केर्यश एव च

eteṣāṁ caiva māhātmyaṁ pādme dṛṣṭaṁ tathā śrutam mahābodhasvarūpaṁ ca sakalkeryaśa eva ca

The glory of all these has been seen and heard within the Padma Purana; and the form of Mahabodhi, and likewise the fame of Sakalkera.

Verse 52 (padma.6.1.52)

रामगयाया माहात्म्यं तथा प्रेतशिलाभवम् । ब्रह्मणश्च तथाख्यानं शिलाख्यानं वदाम्यहम्

rāmagayāyā māhātmyaṁ tathā pretaśilābhavam brahmaṇaśca tathākhyānaṁ śilākhyānaṁ vadāmyaham

The glory of Ramagaya, and the merit born at Pretashila; the tale of Brahma, and the tale of the sacred Rock I shall also tell.

Verse 53 (padma.6.1.53)

ब्रह्मयोनेस्तथाख्यानमक्षयाख्य वटस्य च । श्राद्धे तत्र महत्पुण्यं यत्तत्सर्वं वदाम्यहम्

brahmayonestathākhyānamakṣayākhya vaṭasya ca śrāddhe tatra mahatpuṇyaṁ yattatsarvaṁ vadāmyaham

The tale of Brahmayoni, and of the Akshaya Vata, the undying banyan; the great merit gained by performing shraddha there — all that I shall relate.

Verse 54 (padma.6.1.54)

महेश्वरकृतां भक्तिं विष्णुना च महात्मना । अद्यापि काश्यां जपति महारुद्रो ह्यनामयम्

maheśvarakṛtāṁ bhaktiṁ viṣṇunā ca mahātmanā adyāpi kāśyāṁ japati mahārudro hyanāmayam

The devotion that Maheshvara performed toward the great-souled Vishnu — even today in Kashi the great Rudra recites it, undisturbed.

Verse 55 (padma.6.1.55)

माहात्म्यं च ततो वक्ष्ये सागरस्य हि नारद । तिलतर्पणजं पुण्यं यवजं पुण्यमेव च

māhātmyaṁ ca tato vakṣye sāgarasya hi nārada tilatarpaṇajaṁ puṇyaṁ yavajaṁ puṇyameva ca

Then, O Narada, I shall tell the glory of the ocean; the merit born of sesame libation, and likewise of barley libation.

Verse 56 (padma.6.1.56)

तुलसीदलसंयुक्तं तर्पणं देवजं तथा । तन्माहात्म्यं प्रवक्ष्यामि यथोक्तं ब्रह्मणा मम

tulasīdalasaṁyuktaṁ tarpaṇaṁ devajaṁ tathā tanmāhātmyaṁ pravakṣyāmi yathoktaṁ brahmaṇā mama

Libation offered together with tulsi leaves, and libation offered to the gods; its glory too I shall tell exactly as Brahma told it to me.

Verse 57 (padma.6.1.57)

शंखनादस्य माहात्म्यं पुण्यं चासंख्यसंज्ञकम्

śaṁkhanādasya māhātmyaṁ puṇyaṁ cāsaṁkhyasaṁjñakam

The glory of the sounding of the conch, and the merit called the countless.

Verse 58 (padma.6.1.58)

रवेर्वारस्य माहात्म्यं योगस्य विष्णुसंज्ञिनः । वैधृतस्य च माहात्म्यं व्यतीपातस्य वै तथा

ravervārasya māhātmyaṁ yogasya viṣṇusaṁjñinaḥ vaidhṛtasya ca māhātmyaṁ vyatīpātasya vai tathā

The glory of Sunday, of the yoga named after Vishnu; and likewise the glory of Vaidhriti and of Vyatipata.

Verse 59 (padma.6.1.59)

एतत्सर्वं प्रवक्ष्यामि यथोक्तं चैव नारद । अन्नदानं वस्त्रदानं भूमिदानं तथैव च

etatsarvaṁ pravakṣyāmi yathoktaṁ caiva nārada annadānaṁ vastradānaṁ bhūmidānaṁ tathaiva ca

All this I shall tell, O Narada, exactly as it has been declared — the gift of food, the gift of clothing, and likewise the gift of land.

Verse 60 (padma.6.1.60)

शय्यादानं च गोदानं तथा वृषभमेव च । जन्माष्टम्याश्च माहात्म्यं मत्स्यमाहात्म्यमेव च

śayyādānaṁ ca godānaṁ tathā vṛṣabhameva ca janmāṣṭamyāśca māhātmyaṁ matsyamāhātmyameva ca

The gift of a bed, the gift of a cow, and likewise a bull; the glory of Janmashtami, and the glory of the Fish avatar as well.

Verse 61 (padma.6.1.61)

कूर्ममाहात्म्यं तत्प्रोक्तं वाराहस्य तथैव च । माहात्म्यं च गवादीनां दानानां प्रवदाम्यहम्

kūrmamāhātmyaṁ tatproktaṁ vārāhasya tathaiva ca māhātmyaṁ ca gavādīnāṁ dānānāṁ pravadāmyaham

The glory of the Tortoise avatar is declared, and likewise of the Boar avatar; and I shall also tell the glory of giving cows and the like.

Verse 62 (padma.6.1.62)

प्रह्लादमुखभक्ता ये ये केचिद्भुवि विश्रुताः । तन्माहात्म्यं ततो वक्ष्ये शृणु देवर्षिसत्तम

prahlādamukhabhaktā ye ye kecidbhuvi viśrutāḥ tanmāhātmyaṁ tato vakṣye śṛṇu devarṣisattama

Whoever the renowned devotees following Prahlada's path have been on this earth — listen, O best of divine sages, their glory too I shall now tell.

Verse 63 (padma.6.1.63)

जागरे महिमा चैव दीपदाने कृते च यत् । प्रहरेषु पृथक्पूजाफलं देवर्षिसत्तम

jāgare mahimā caiva dīpadāne kṛte ca yat prahareṣu pṛthakpūjāphalaṁ devarṣisattama

The glory of the night-vigil, and the merit of offering lamps within it; O best of divine sages, the fruit of separate worship in each watch of the night.

Verse 64 (padma.6.1.64)

पर्शुरामस्य चाख्यानं रेणुकाया वधस्तथा । ब्राह्मणानां भूमिदानं रामेणैव च यत्कृतम्

parśurāmasya cākhyānaṁ reṇukāyā vadhastathā brāhmaṇānāṁ bhūmidānaṁ rāmeṇaiva ca yatkṛtam

The tale of Parashurama, and the tale of Renuka's slaying; and the tale of the gift of land that Parashurama himself made to brahmins.

Verse 65 (padma.6.1.65)

रामस्याश्रमजं पुण्यं वदाम्यहमशेषतः । नर्मदायास्तथाख्यानं पुण्यपूजनयोस्तथा

rāmasyāśramajaṁ puṇyaṁ vadāmyahamaśeṣataḥ narmadāyāstathākhyānaṁ puṇyapūjanayostathā

The merit born at Rama's hermitage I shall tell in full; and the tale of the Narmada, and the merit of worshipping her.

Verse 66 (padma.6.1.66)

दानं वेदपुराणानामाश्रमाणां निरूपणम् । हिरण्यदानपुण्यं च ब्रह्मांडदानमेव च

dānaṁ vedapurāṇānāmāśramāṇāṁ nirūpaṇam hiraṇyadānapuṇyaṁ ca brahmāṁḍadānameva ca

The gift of the Vedas and Puranas, and the description of the ashramas; the merit of the gift of gold, and likewise the gift of a replica of the universe.

Verse 67 (padma.6.1.67)

पद्मपुराणदानं च खंडानां व्यक्तयस्तथा । प्रथमं सृष्टिखंडं च द्वितीयं भूमिखंडकम्

padmapurāṇadānaṁ ca khaṁḍānāṁ vyaktayastathā prathamaṁ sṛṣṭikhaṁḍaṁ ca dvitīyaṁ bhūmikhaṁḍakam

The gift of the Padma Purana itself, and the divisions of its khandas; the first is the Srishti Khanda, the second the Bhumi Khanda.

Verse 68 (padma.6.1.68)

स्वर्गखंडं तृतीयं च तुर्यं पातालसंज्ञकम् । उत्तरं पंचमं प्रोक्तं खंडान्यनुक्रमेण वै

svargakhaṁḍaṁ tṛtīyaṁ ca turyaṁ pātālasaṁjñakam uttaraṁ paṁcamaṁ proktaṁ khaṁḍānyanukrameṇa vai

The third is the Svarga Khanda, the fourth called the Patala Khanda; the fifth is declared the Uttara Khanda — the khandas stand in this very order.

Verse 69 (padma.6.1.69)

एतत्पद्मपुराणं तु व्यासेन तु महात्मना । कृतं लोकहितार्थाय ब्राह्मणश्रेयसे तथा

etatpadmapurāṇaṁ tu vyāsena tu mahātmanā kṛtaṁ lokahitārthāya brāhmaṇaśreyase tathā

This Padma Purana was composed by the great soul Vyasa for the welfare of the world and for the benefit of brahmins alike,

Verse 70 (padma.6.1.70)

शूद्राणां पुण्यजननं तीव्रदारिद्र्यनाशनम् । मोक्षदं सुखदं चाशु कल्याणप्रदमव्ययम् । श्रुत्वा दानं तथा कुर्याद्विधिना तत्र नारद

śūdrāṇāṁ puṇyajananaṁ tīvradāridryanāśanam mokṣadaṁ sukhadaṁ cāśu kalyāṇapradamavyayam śrutvā dānaṁ tathā kuryādvidhinā tatra nārada

which generates merit even for shudras, destroys severe poverty, grants liberation and happiness, swiftly bestows auspiciousness, and is imperishable. O Narada, having heard it, one should also give gifts there according to the proper rite.
