Uttara Khanda · Chapter 118

The Merits of Gifts and Observances in Kartika

Chapter 117All chaptersChapter 119

Verse 1 (padma.6.118.1)

sūta uvāca punaḥ provāca bhagavānmahādevo vṛṣadhvajaḥ śrotāramupasaṁgamya bhaktiyuktaṁ ṣaḍānanam

Sūta said: Again the Lord Mahadeva, whose banner bears the bull, spoke, drawing near to the devoted listener, the six-faced one.

Verse 2 (padma.6.118.2)

īśvara uvāca kārtiko vaiṣṇavo māsaḥ sarvamāseṣu cottamaḥ asminmāse trayastriṁśaddevāḥ saṁnihitāḥ kalau

Ishvara said: Kartika is the month of Vishnu, the most excellent of all months. In this month, in the Kali age, the thirty-three gods are all present.

Verse 3 (padma.6.118.3)

ūrje māsi mahābhāgau bhojanāni dvijātaye tiladhenuṁ hiraṇyaṁ ca rajataṁ bhūmivāsasī

In the month of Urja [Kartika], O illustrious one, food should be given to the twice-born; as should a cow of sesame, gold, silver, land, and clothing —

Verse 4 (padma.6.118.4)

gopradānāni dāsyaṁti sarvabhāvena suvrata sarveṣāmeva dānānāṁ kanyādānaṁ viśiṣyate

— and gifts of cows should be given with one's whole heart, O you of good vows. Among all gifts, the gift of a maiden [in marriage] is the most excellent.

Verse 5 (padma.6.118.5)

brāhmaṇāyātra ye kanyāṁ dāsyaṁti vidhivannarāḥ vaikuṁṭhe vasatisteṣāṁ yāvadiṁdrāścaturdaśa

Those men who, in this [month], duly give a maiden to a brahmin — their dwelling is in Vaikuntha for as long as fourteen Indras [reign].

Verse 6 (padma.6.118.6)

romakāle tu saṁprāpte somo bhuṁkte tu kanyakām ṛtukāle tu gaṁdharvā vahnistu kucadarśane

When the time of her first bodily hair arrives, the Moon partakes of the maiden; at the time of her first menses, the Gandharvas; and Agni at the sight of her breasts developing —

Verse 7 (padma.6.118.7)

tāvadvivāhayetkanyāṁ yāvannartumatī bhavet vivāhastvaṣṭavarṣāyāḥ kanyāyāḥ śasyate budhaiḥ

— therefore one should marry off the maiden before she attains her menses. The marriage of a girl of eight years is praised by the wise.

Verse 8 (padma.6.118.8)

dātavyā śrotriyāyaiva brāhmaṇāya tapasvine sākṣādadhītavedāya vidhinā brahmacāriṇe

She should be given only to a brahmin learned in the Veda, austere, one who has himself directly studied the Veda, and who has duly observed brahmacharya.

Verse 9 (padma.6.118.9)

kanyāvarapramāṇāyā eṣa eva vidhiḥ smṛtaḥ yāvaṁti caiva romāṇi kanyāyāśca tanau suta

This alone is remembered as the rule regarding the measure of bride and groom. And, my son, for as many hairs as there are on the maiden's body —

Verse 10 (padma.6.118.10)

tāvadvarṣasahasrāṇi rudraloke mahīyate sahasrameva dhenūnāṁ śataṁ cānuḍuhāṁ samam

— for that many thousands of years the giver is glorified in the world of Rudra. A thousand milk-cows equal a hundred draught-oxen;

Verse 11 (padma.6.118.11)

daśānuḍutsamaṁ yānaṁ daśayānasamo hayaḥ hayadānasahasrebhyo gajadānaṁ viśiṣyate

ten draught-oxen equal one carriage; ten carriages equal one horse. More excellent than the gift of a thousand horses is the gift of an elephant.

Verse 12 (padma.6.118.12)

gajadānasahasrāṇāṁ svarṇadānaṁ ca tatsamam svarṇabhārasahasrāṇāṁ vidyādānaṁ ca tatsamam

Equal to the gift of a thousand elephants is the gift of gold; and equal to the gift of a thousand loads of gold is the gift of knowledge.

Verse 13 (padma.6.118.13)

vidyādānātkoṭiguṇaṁ bhūmidānaṁ viśiṣyate bhūmidānasahasrebhyo gopradānaṁ viśiṣyate

Ten million times more excellent than the gift of knowledge is the gift of land; more excellent than a thousand gifts of land is the gift of a cow.

Verse 14 (padma.6.118.14)

gopradānasahasrebhyo hyannadānaṁ viśiṣyate annādhāramidaṁ sarvaṁ jagatsthāvarajaṁgamam

More excellent than a thousand gifts of cows is the gift of food, for this entire world, moving and unmoving, rests upon food.

Verse 15 (padma.6.118.15)

tasmāddeyaṁ prayatnena kārtike śikhivāhana trīṇi tulyapradānāni trīṇi tulyaphalāni ca

Therefore, O rider of the peacock, food should be given with care in Kartika. Three gifts are of equal merit, and three bear equal fruit —

Verse 16 (padma.6.118.16)

kārtikeya uvāca anyānapi mahādeva dharmānme vaktumarhasi yānkṛtvā sarvapāpāni prakṣālya tridaśo bhavet

Kartikeya said: O Mahadeva, tell me also of other virtuous acts, by performing which one may wash away all sins and become a god.

Verse 17 (padma.6.118.17)

sūta uvāca itipṛṣṭastadā śaṁbhuḥ punarvaktuṁ pracakrame yāvatkiṁ bahudhā stutvāttacchṛṇudhvaṁ tapodhanāḥ

Sūta said: Thus asked, Shambhu then began to speak again. O you rich in austerity, hear now what he told, having been praised in various ways.

Verse 18 (padma.6.118.18)

īśvara uvāca parānnaṁ varjayedyastu kārtike niyame kṛte parānnavarjanādeva labheccāṁdrāyaṇaṁ phalam

Ishvara said: Whoever, having taken the vow, abstains from another's food during Kartika, obtains, through that very abstinence, the fruit of the Chandrayana penance.

Verse 19 (padma.6.118.19)

taṁ prāptaṁ kārtikaṁ dṛṣṭvā parānnaṁ yastu varjayet dinedine tu kṛcchrasya phalaṁprāpnoti mānavaḥ

Whoever, seeing that Kartika has arrived, abstains from another's food — that man obtains, day by day, the fruit of the Krichchhra penance.

Verse 20 (padma.6.118.20)

kārtike varjayettailaṁ kārtike varjayenmadhu kārtike varjayetkāṁsyaṁ saṁghānnaṁ ca viśeṣataḥ

In Kartika one should give up oil; in Kartika one should give up honey; in Kartika one should give up eating from bronze vessels, and especially food eaten in a crowd.

Verse 21 (padma.6.118.21)

rākṣasīṁ yonimāpnoti sakṛnmāṁsasya bhakṣaṇāt ṣaṣṭivarṣasahasrāṇi viṣṭhāyāṁ paripacyate

By eating meat even once, one obtains a demonic birth, and is cooked for sixty thousand years in a hell of excrement.

Verse 22 (padma.6.118.22)

tanmukto jāyate pāpo viṣṭhāśī grāmasūkaraḥ pravṛttānāṁ tu bhakṣāṇāṁ kārtike niyame kṛte

Freed from that, the sinner is born a village pig that eats filth. But by observing the vow in Kartika with regard to foods normally eaten —

Verse 23 (padma.6.118.23)

avaśyaṁ viṣṇurūpatvaṁ prāpyate mokṣadaṁ padam na kārtikasamo māso na daivaṁ keśavātparam

— one certainly attains the very form of Vishnu, the liberating state. There is no month equal to Kartika, no deity higher than Keshava,

Verse 24 (padma.6.118.24)

na vedasadṛśaṁ śāstraṁ na tīrthaṁ gaṁgayā samam na satyaṁ na samaṁ vṛttaṁ na kṛtena samaṁ yugam

no scripture equal to the Veda, no tirtha equal to the Ganga, no equal to truthfulness, no conduct equal to right conduct, and no age equal to the Krita [Golden] age.

Verse 25 (padma.6.118.25)

na tṛptī rasanā tulyā na dānasadṛśaṁ sukham na dharmasadṛśaṁ mitraṁ na jyotiścakṣuṣā samam

There is no contentment equal to the pleasure of the tongue, no happiness equal to giving, no friend equal to dharma, and no light equal to the eye.

Verse 26 (padma.6.118.26)

avratena kṣipedyastu māsaṁ dāmodarapriyam karmabhraṣṭaḥ sa vijñeyo hīnayoniṣu jāyate

Whoever lets this month, dear to Damodara [Krishna], pass by without observing the vow, should be known as fallen from right action, and is born in low forms of life.

Verse 27 (padma.6.118.27)

kārtikaḥ pravaro māso vaiṣṇavānāṁ sadā priyaḥ samudragā nadī puṇyā durlabhā snānaśālinām

Kartika is the foremost month, ever dear to the Vaishnavas. A sacred river flowing to the ocean is hard to find for those devoted to bathing.

Verse 28 (padma.6.118.28)

kulaśīlavatīkanyā durlabhā daṁpatī nṛṇām durlabhā jananī loke pitā caiva viśeṣataḥ

A maiden of good family and good character is hard to find; a truly harmonious married couple is hard to find among men; a truly good mother is hard to find in this world, and especially a truly good father.

Verse 29 (padma.6.118.29)

durlabhaṁ sādhusanmānaṁ durlabho dhārmikaḥ sutaḥ durlabho dvārikāvāso durlabhaṁ kṛṣṇadarśanam

Honor for the virtuous is hard to find; a righteous son is hard to find; dwelling at Dvaraka is hard to find; the sight of Krishna is hard to find.

Verse 30 (padma.6.118.30)

durlabhaṁ gomatīsnānaṁ durlabhaṁ kārtikavratam brāhmaṇebhyo mahīṁ dattvā grahaṇe caṁdrasūryayoḥ

Bathing in the Gomati river is hard to find; the Kartika vow is hard to find. That fruit which one obtains by giving land to brahmins during an eclipse of the moon or the sun —

Verse 31 (padma.6.118.31)

yatphalaṁ labhate vatsa tatphalaṁ bhūmiśāyinaḥ bhojanaṁ dvijadaṁpatyoḥ pūjayecca vilepanaiḥ

— that same fruit, my child, is obtained by one who sleeps on the ground during Kartika. One should provide food to a brahmin couple, and honor them with unguents,

Verse 32 (padma.6.118.32)

kaṁbalāni ca ratnāni vāsāṁsi vividhāni ca tūlikāśca pradātavyāḥ pracchādanapaṭaiḥ saha

— and blankets, jewels, and clothes of various kinds; cushions too should be given, together with coverlets.

Verse 33 (padma.6.118.33)

upānahā vātapatraṁ kārtike dehi pāvake yaḥ karoti naro nityaṁ kārtike patrabhojanam

Give sandals and a fan in Kartika, O bright one. That man who daily eats his meal from a leaf-plate during Kartika —

Verse 34 (padma.6.118.34)

na durgatimavāpnoti yāvadiṁdrāścaturdaśa sarvakāmaphalaṁ tasya sarvatīrthaphalaṁ labhet

— does not attain a bad rebirth for as long as fourteen Indras [reign]. He obtains the fruit of every desire, and the fruit of every sacred tirtha;

Verse 35 (padma.6.118.35)

na cāpi narakaṁ paśyedbrahmapatreṣu bhojanāt brahmā eṣa smṛtaḥ sākṣātpālāśaḥ sarvakāmadaḥ

he does not even behold hell, through eating from leaf-plates. This Palasha leaf is remembered as Brahma himself, granting every desire.

Verse 36 (padma.6.118.36)

madhyamaṁ varjayetpatraṁ kārtike śikhivāhana brahmā viṣṇuśca rudraśca trayo devāstripatrake

O rider of the peacock, in Kartika one should avoid the middle leaflet of the three-leaved palasha sprig. Brahma, Vishnu, and Rudra are the three gods in the triple leaf —

Verse 37 (padma.6.118.37)

aiśvaraṁ varjayetpatraṁ brahmāviṣṇuranuttamaḥ sarvapuṇyamavāpnoti śeṣapatreṣu bhojanāt

— one should avoid the leaflet belonging to Ishvara [Shiva]; that of Brahma and Vishnu is unsurpassed. One obtains all merit by eating from the remaining leaves.

Verse 38 (padma.6.118.38)

bhojanānmadhyapatre tu kapilāpayasastathā prāśanānmuniśārdūla naro narakamāpnuyāt

But, O tiger among sages, by eating from the middle leaf, and likewise by drinking the milk of a tawny [kapila] cow in that manner, a man attains hell.

Verse 39 (padma.6.118.39)

ajñānādbhuṁjate yastu śūdro vā kapilāpayaḥ kapilāṁ brāhmaṇe dattvā śuddho bhavati kārtike

Whoever, out of ignorance — whether a shudra or otherwise — drinks the milk of a tawny cow in this forbidden way, becomes pure again in Kartika by giving a tawny cow to a brahmin.

Verse 40 (padma.6.118.40)

tiladānaṁ nadīsnānaṁ sarvadā sādhudarśanam bhojanaṁ brahmapatreṣu kārtike muktidāyakam

The gift of sesame, bathing in a river, the constant sight of the virtuous, and eating from leaf-plates during Kartika — these bestow liberation.

Verse 41 (padma.6.118.41)

maunī pālāśabhojī ca jalasnāyī sadā kṣamī kārtike kṣitiśāyī ca hanyātpāpaṁ yugārjitam

One who keeps silence, eats from palasha leaves, bathes always in water, is ever forbearing, and sleeps on the ground during Kartika, destroys sins accumulated over an entire age.

Verse 42 (padma.6.118.42)

jāgaraṁ kārtike māsi yaḥ karotyaruṇodaye dāmodarāgre senānīrgosahasraphalaṁ labhet

Whoever keeps vigil at dawn during the month of Kartika before Damodara [Krishna] — O commander [of the divine army] — obtains the fruit of giving a thousand cows.

Verse 43 (padma.6.118.43)

pitṛpakṣe'nnadānena jyeṣṭhāṣāḍhe ca vāriṇā kārtike tatphalaṁ puṁsāṁ paradīpaprabodhanāt

That fruit which men obtain through the gift of food during the fortnight of the ancestors, and through the gift of water in Jyeshtha and Ashadha — that same fruit is obtained in Kartika merely by reviving another's lamp.

Verse 44 (padma.6.118.44)

bodhanātparadīpasya vaiṣṇavānāṁ ca sevanāt kārtike phalamāpnoti rājasūyāśvamedhayoḥ

Through reviving another's lamp, and through service to Vaishnavas, one obtains in Kartika the fruit of the Rajasuya and Ashvamedha sacrifices.

Verse 45 (padma.6.118.45)

nadīsnānaṁ kathāviṣṇorvaiṣṇavānāṁ ca darśanam na bhavetkārtike yasya haretpuṇyaṁ daśābdikam

For one who fails, in Kartika, to bathe in a river, to hear the story of Vishnu, and to have the sight of Vaishnavas — this omission takes away the merit of ten years.

Verse 46 (padma.6.118.46)

puṣkaraṁ yaḥ smaretprājñaḥ karmaṇā manasā girā kārtike muniśārdūla lakṣakoṭiguṇaṁ bhavet

O tiger among sages, whatever wise man remembers Pushkara in deed, in mind, and in speech during Kartika — that merit becomes multiplied a hundred thousand crore times.

Verse 47 (padma.6.118.47)

prayāgo māghamāse tu puṣkaraṁ kārtike tathā avaṁtī mādhave māsi hanyātpāpaṁ yugārjitam

Prayaga in the month of Magha, Pushkara likewise in Kartika, and Avanti in the month of Madhava [Vaishakha] — remembering these destroys sins accumulated over an age.

Verse 48 (padma.6.118.48)

dhanyāste mānavā loke kalikāle viśeṣataḥ kurvaṁti skaṁda nityaṁ ye sarvathā harisevanam

Blessed indeed are those men in this world, especially in the age of Kali, O Skanda, who constantly perform the service of Hari in every way.

Verse 49 (padma.6.118.49)

kiṁ dattairbahubhiḥ piṁḍairgayāśrāddhādibhirmune tāritāstena pitaro narakācca na saṁśayaḥ

O sage, what need is there of offering many rice-balls, or of shraddha rites at Gaya and the rest? By that [service to Hari] the ancestors are surely delivered from hell, without doubt.

Verse 50 (padma.6.118.50)

kṣīrādisnapanaṁ viṣṇoḥ kriyate pitṛkāraṇāt kalpakoṭiṁ divaṁ prāpya vasaṁti tridaśaiḥ saha

When the bathing of Vishnu with milk and the rest is performed for the sake of one's ancestors, they attain heaven and dwell there with the gods for ten million kalpas.

Verse 51 (padma.6.118.51)

kārtike nārcito yaistu kṛṣṇastu kamalekṣaṇaḥ janmakoṭiṣu vipreṁdra na teṣāṁ kamalā gṛhe

O foremost of brahmins, those by whom lotus-eyed Krishna is not worshipped in Kartika — for them, through ten million births, Kamala [Lakshmi] does not dwell in their home.

Verse 52 (padma.6.118.52)

daṣṭā muṣṭā vinaṣṭāste patitāḥ kalikaṁdare yairnārcito harirbhaktyā kamalairasitaiḥ sitaiḥ

Those by whom Hari is not devotedly worshipped with lotuses, dark or white, are bitten [by misfortune], robbed, ruined, and fallen into the abyss of Kali.

Verse 53 (padma.6.118.53)

padmenaikena deveśaṁ yo'rcayetkamalāpatim varṣāyutasahasrasya pāpasya kurute kṣayam

Whoever worships the Lord of gods, the husband of Kamala, with even a single lotus, destroys the sin of ten million years.

Verse 54 (padma.6.118.54)

aparādhasahasrāṇi tathā saptaśatāni ca padmenaikena deveśaḥ kṣameta praṇato'rcitaḥ

A thousand offenses, and seven hundred more — the Lord of gods, worshipped and bowed to with even a single lotus, forgives them all.

Verse 55 (padma.6.118.55)

tulasīpatralakṣeṇa kārtike yo'rcayeddharim patrepatre muniśreṣṭha mauktikaṁ labhate phalam

O foremost of sages, whoever worships Hari with a hundred thousand tulasi leaves in Kartika obtains, for each and every leaf, the fruit of the gift of a pearl.

Verse 56 (padma.6.118.56)

tulasīgaṁdhamiśraṁ tu yatkiṁcitkriyate suta kalpakoṭisahasrāṇi prīto bhavati keśavaḥ

Whatever, my son, is offered mixed with the fragrance of tulasi — however small — by that Keshava becomes pleased for a thousand ten-million kalpas.

Verse 57 (padma.6.118.57)

mukhe śirasi dehe tu kṛṣṇottīrṇāṁ tu yo vahet tulasīṁ ṣaṇmukhaprītyā na tasya spṛśate kaliḥ

O six-faced one, whoever bears upon his face, head, or body, with devotion, tulasi that has been offered to Krishna — the age of Kali [misfortune] does not touch him.

My son, whoever's body is touched by the remnant of the incense-embers offered to Vishnu — his misfortunes are destroyed and his diseases go to utter ruin.

Verse 60 (padma.6.118.60)

śaṁkhodakaṁ harerbhaktirnirmālyaṁ pādayorjalam caṁdanaṁ dhūpaśeṣaṁ tu brahmahatyāpahārakam

The conch-water [used in Hari's worship, taken] with devotion to Hari, the discarded flowers, the water that has washed his feet, the sandal-paste, and the remnant of the incense — these remove even the sin of killing a brahmin.
