Uttara Khanda · Chapter 122
The Glory of Diwali, Govardhana, Bali, and Yama-Dvitiya
Verse 1 (padma.6.122.1)
kārtikeya uvāca dīpāvaliphalaṁ nātha viśeṣādbrūhi sāṁpratam kimarthaṁ kriyate sā tu tasyāḥ kā devatā bhavet
Kartikeya said: O Lord, tell me now in particular the fruit of Diwali. For what purpose is it performed, and who is its presiding deity?
Verse 2 (padma.6.122.2)
kiṁ ca tatra bhaveddeyaṁ kiṁ na deyaṁ vada prabho praharṣaḥ ko'tra nirdiṣṭaḥ krīḍā kātra prakīrtitā
And what should be given there, and what should not be given — tell me, O Lord. What joy is prescribed here, and what play is celebrated here?
Verse 3 (padma.6.122.3)
sūta uvāca iti skaṁdavacaḥ śrutvā bhagavānkāmaśoṣaṇaḥ sādhūktvā kārtikaṁ viprāḥ prahasannidamabravīt
Sūta said: Hearing these words of Skanda, the Lord who consumed the god of desire, O brahmins, having said "well asked," spoke this with a smile, continuing his account of Kartika.
Verse 4 (padma.6.122.4)
śrīśiva uvāca kārtikasyāsite pakṣe trayodaśyāṁ tu pāvake yamadīpaṁ bahirdadyādapamṛtyurvinaśyati
Śrī Shiva said: On the thirteenth day of the dark fortnight of Kartika, one should offer a lamp to Yama outside the house; accidental death is thereby destroyed.
Verse 5 (padma.6.122.5)
mṛtyunā pāśahastena kālena bhāryayā saha trayodaśīdīpadānātsūryajaḥ prīyatāmiti
"By offering this lamp on the Trayodashi, may the Son of the Sun be pleased, together with Mrityu, noose in hand, with Kala, and with his wife."
Verse 6 (padma.6.122.6)
kārtike kṛṣṇapakṣe ca caturdaśyāṁ vidhūdaye avaśyameva karttavyaṁ snānaṁ ca pāpabhīrubhiḥ
On the fourteenth day of the dark fortnight of Kartika, at moonrise, bathing must certainly be performed by those who fear sin.
Verse 7 (padma.6.122.7)
pūrvaviddhā caturdaśyā kārtikasya sitetare pakṣe pratyūṣasamaye snānaṁ kuryādataṁdritaḥ
On the fourteenth day, when touched by the preceding tithi, in the dark fortnight of Kartika, one should bathe at the time of dawn, without laziness.
Verse 8 (padma.6.122.8)
taile lakṣmīrjale gaṁgā dīpāvalyāṁ caturdaśīm prāptaḥ snānaṁ hi yaḥ kuryādyamalokaṁ na paśyati
Lakshmi resides in the oil, and the Ganga in the water, on this fourteenth day of Diwali; whoever bathes upon reaching it does not behold the world of Yama.
Verse 9 (padma.6.122.9)
apāmārgastathā tuṁbī prapunnāṭaṁ ca vāhvalam bhrāmayetsnānamadhye tu narakasya kṣayāya vai
The apamarga plant, the gourd, the prapunnata plant, and the vahvala — one should wave these around during the bath, for the destruction of hell.
Verse 10 (padma.6.122.10)
sītāloṣṭasamāyukta sakaṁṭaka dalānvita hara pāpamapāmārga bhrāmyamāṇaḥ punaḥ punaḥ
"O apamarga, joined with cool clods of earth, bearing thorny leaves — take away my sin, as you are waved around again and again."
Verse 11 (padma.6.122.11)
apāmārgaṁ prapunnāṭaṁ bhrāmayecchirasopari tataśca tarpaṇaṁ kāryaṁ yamarājasya nāmabhiḥ
One should wave the apamarga and prapunnata plants above the head; and thereafter, offerings of water should be made in the names of Yamaraja —
Verse 12 (padma.6.122.12)
yamāya dharmarājāya mṛtyave cāṁtakāya ca vaivastāya kālāya sarvabhūtakṣayāya ca
— to Yama, to Dharmaraja, to Mrityu, and to Antaka; to Vaivasvata, to Kala, and to the Destroyer of all beings;
Verse 13 (padma.6.122.13)
auduṁbarāya dadhnāya nīlāya parameṣṭhine vṛkodarāya citrāya citraguptāya vai namaḥ
— to Audumbara, to Dadhna, to Nila, to Parameshthin, to Vrikodara, to Chitra, and truly to Chitragupta — homage.
Verse 14 (padma.6.122.14)
narakāya pradātavyo dīpaḥ saṁpūjya devatāḥ tataḥ pradoṣasamaye dīpāndadyānmanoharān
A lamp should also be given for Naraka, having duly worshipped the deities. Then, at twilight, one should offer charming lamps —
Verse 15 (padma.6.122.15)
brahmaviṣṇuśivādīnāṁ bhavaneṣu viśeṣataḥ kūṭāgāreṣu caityeṣu sabhāsu ca nadīṣu ca
— especially in the temples of Brahma, Vishnu, Shiva and the rest; in upper chambers, in shrines, in assembly halls, and by rivers,
Verse 16 (padma.6.122.16)
prākārodyānavāpīṣu pratolī niṣkuṭeṣu ca maṁdurāsu viviktāsu hastiśālāsu caiva hi
— in enclosures, gardens, and step-wells, on main streets and in private gardens, in stables set apart, and in elephant-stalls indeed.
Verse 17 (padma.6.122.17)
evaṁ prabhātasamaye hyamāvāsyāṁ tu pāvakaṁ snātvā devānpitṝnbhaktyā saṁpūjyātha praṇamya ca
Thus, at the time of dawn on the new-moon day, having bathed, one should devotedly worship the gods and the ancestors, and having bowed —
Verse 18 (padma.6.122.18)
kṛtvā tu pārvaṇaṁ śrāddhaṁ dadhikṣīraghṛtādibhiḥ bhojyairnānāvidhairviprānbhojayitvā kṣamāpayet
— one should perform the Parvana Shraddha with curd, milk, ghee and the like, feed the brahmins with various foods, and ask their forgiveness.
Verse 19 (padma.6.122.19)
tatoparāhṇasamaye poṣayennāgarānpriya teṣāṁ goṣṭhīṁ ca mānaṁ ca kṛtvā saṁbhāṣaṇaṁ nṛpaḥ
Then, in the afternoon, O beloved, one should provide for the citizens; and the king, having shown them company, honor, and conversation —
Verse 20 (padma.6.122.20)
vaktṛṇāṁ vatsaraṁ yāvatprītirutpadyate guha aprabuddhe harau pūrvaṁ strībhirlakṣmīḥ prabodhayet
— O Guha, for a full year the goodwill of the speakers is thus generated. Before Hari has yet fully awakened from his sleep, the women should first awaken Lakshmi.
Verse 21 (padma.6.122.21)
prabodhasamaye lakṣmīṁ bodhayitvā tu sustriyā pumānvai vatsaraṁ yāvallakṣmīstaṁ naiva muṁcati
At the time of awakening, having awakened Lakshmi through a virtuous woman, a man — for a full year — is never abandoned by Lakshmi.
Verse 22 (padma.6.122.22)
abhayaṁ prāpya viprebhyo viṣṇubhītā suradviṣaḥ suptaṁ kṣīrodadhau jñātvā lakṣmīṁ padmāśritāṁ tathā
[Once] the enemies of the gods, fearing Vishnu, having obtained safety from the brahmins, and knowing that He slept in the ocean of milk, and Lakshmi, seated on her lotus —
Verse 23 (padma.6.122.23)
tvaṁ jyotiḥ śrī raviścaṁdro vidyutsauvarṇatārakaḥ sarveṣāṁ jyotiṣāṁ jyotirdīpajyotiḥ sthitā tu yā
[The gods praise Lakshmi:] "You are light, O Shri — the sun, the moon, the lightning, and the golden stars. Of all lights, that light which abides as the light of the lamp —"
Verse 24 (padma.6.122.24)
yā lakṣmīrdivase puṇye dīpāvalyāṁ ca bhūtale gavāṁ goṣṭhe tu kārtikyāṁ sā lakṣmīrvaradā mama
— "that Lakshmi, who on this sacred day of Diwali on the earth, and in the cow-pen during Kartika, is present — may that boon-giving Lakshmi be mine."
Verse 25 (padma.6.122.25)
śaṁkaraśca bhavānī ca krīḍayā dyūtamāsthitau bhavānyābhyarcitā lakṣmīrdhenurūpeṇa saṁsthitā
[Once] Shankara and Bhavani engaged in a game of dice for sport. Lakshmi, worshipped by Bhavani, took her stand there in the form of a cow.
Verse 26 (padma.6.122.26)
gauryā jitvā purā śaṁbhurnagno dyūte visarjitaḥ ato'yaṁ śaṁkaro duḥkhī gaurī nityaṁ sukhesthitā
Having won that game, Gauri once sent Shambhu away naked from the dice game. Because of this, Shankara became sorrowful, while Gauri ever remains established in happiness.
Verse 27 (padma.6.122.27)
prathamaṁ vijayo yasya tasya saṁvatsaraṁ sukham evaṁ gate niśīthe tu jane nidrārdhalocane
[Hence, the belief:] whoever wins first at dice on this day enjoys happiness for the whole year. Thus, when midnight has come, while people's eyes are half-closed in sleep —
Verse 28 (padma.6.122.28)
tāvannagaranārībhistūrya ḍiṁḍimavādanaiḥ niṣkāsyate prahṛṣṭābhiralakṣmīśca gṛhāṁgaṇāt
— at that very time, the women of the city, delighted, with the sound of trumpets and drums, drive out Alakshmi from the courtyard of the house.
Verse 29 (padma.6.122.29)
parājaye viruddhaṁ syātpratipadyudite ravau prātargovarddhanaḥ pūjyo dyūtaṁ rātrau samācaret
Defeat at this dice-game would be inauspicious. When the sun has risen on the first day, Govardhana should be worshipped in the morning; the dice-game should be performed at night.
Verse 30 (padma.6.122.30)
bhūṣaṇīyāstathā gāvo varjyā vahanadohanāt govarddhanadharādhāra gokulatrāṇakāraka
The cows should be adorned, and should be spared from being yoked or milked on this day. [The prayer runs:] "O supporter who bore Govardhana, O protector of the cow-herd —"
Verse 31 (padma.6.122.31)
viṣṇubāhukṛtocchrāya gavāṁ koṭiprado bhava yā lakṣmīrlokapālānāṁ dhenurūpeṇa saṁsthitā
— "O you who were raised up by Vishnu's own arms, be the giver of ten million cows to me. That Lakshmi of the guardians of the world, who abides in the form of a cow —"
Verse 32 (padma.6.122.32)
ghṛtaṁ vahati yajñārthe mama pāpaṁ vyapohatu agrataḥ saṁtu me gāvo gāvo me saṁtu pṛṣṭhataḥ gāvo me hṛdaye saṁtu gavāṁ madhye vasāmyaham
— "who bears ghee for the sake of sacrifice, may she remove my sin. May cows be before me, may cows be behind me; may cows be in my heart, and may I dwell in the midst of cows."
Verse 33 (padma.6.122.33)
itigovarddhanapūjā sadbhāvenaiva saṁtoṣya devānsatpuruṣānnarān itareṣāmannapānairvākyadānena paṁḍitān
Thus ends the worship of Govardhana. Having pleased the gods and virtuous men with sincerity, and having pleased other men with food and drink, and scholars with the gift of respectful words —
Verse 34 (padma.6.122.34)
vastraistāṁbūladīpaiśca puṣpakarpūrakuṁkumaiḥ bhakṣyairuccāvacairbhojyairaṁtaḥpura nivāsinaḥ
— with clothes, betel, lamps, flowers, camphor, and saffron, and with foods and delicacies both simple and rich, the king should honor the dwellers of his inner palace —
Verse 35 (padma.6.122.35)
grāmarṣabhaṁ ca dānaiśca sāmaṁtānnṛpatirdhanaiḥ padātijanasaṁghāṁśca graiveyaiḥ kaṭakaiḥ śubhaiḥ
— and the village-headmen with gifts, and the king should honor his feudal lords with wealth, and companies of foot-soldiers with fine neck-ornaments and bracelets —
Verse 36 (padma.6.122.36)
svānamātyāṁśca tānrājā toṣayetsvajanānpṛthak yathārthaṁ toṣayitvā tu tato mallānnaṭāṁstathā
— the king should please his own ministers and his own kinsmen, each separately. Having thus duly pleased them all, he should then honor wrestlers, actors,
Verse 37 (padma.6.122.37)
vṛṣabhāṁśca mahokṣāṁśca yuddhymānānparaiḥ saha rājānyāṁścāpi yodhāṁśca padātīnsa samalaṁkṛtān
— and bulls and great oxen fighting with one another; and princes, warriors, and richly adorned foot-soldiers.
Verse 38 (padma.6.122.38)
maṁcārūḍhaḥ svayaṁ paśyennaṭanartakacāraṇān yodhayedvāsayeccaiva gomahiṣyādikaṁ ca yat
Seated upon a dais, he should himself watch the actors, dancers, and bards; and he should hold contests among, and provide dwelling for, cows, buffaloes, and the like.
Verse 39 (padma.6.122.39)
vatsānākarṣayedgobhiruktipratyukti vādanāt tatoparāhṇasamaye pūrvasyāṁ diśi pāvake
He should have calves drawn along by cows amid playful challenges and retorts. Then, in the afternoon, in the eastern direction —
Verse 40 (padma.6.122.40)
mārgapāladyaṁ prabadhnīyāddurgastaṁbhe'tha pādape kuśakāśamayīṁ divyāṁ laṁbakairbahubhirguha
— O Guha, one should tie a "guardian of the road" made of divine kusha and kasha grass, hung with many pendants, to a fortress-pillar or a tree —
Verse 41 (padma.6.122.41)
vīkṣayitvā gajānaśvānmārgapālyāstale nayet gāvairvṛṣāṁścamahiṣānmahiṣīrghaṁṭikotkaṭāḥ
— and having shown it to the elephants and horses, lead them beneath the "guardian of the road"; likewise cows, bulls, buffaloes and she-buffaloes decked with tinkling bells —
Verse 42 (padma.6.122.42)
kṛtahomairdvijeṁdraistu badhnīyānmārgapālikām namaskāraṁ tataḥ kuryānmaṁtreṇānena suvrataḥ
— one should tie up this "guardian of the road," with brahmins having performed the fire-offering. Then, one of good vows should offer homage with this mantra:
Verse 43 (padma.6.122.43)
mārgapāli namastubhyaṁ sarvalokasukhaprade mārgapālītale skaṁda yāṁti gāvo mahāvṛṣāḥ
"O Guardian of the Road, homage to you, bestower of happiness on all the worlds!" O Skanda, cows and great bulls pass beneath the Guardian of the Road,
Verse 44 (padma.6.122.44)
rājāno rājaputrāśca brāhmaṇāśca viśeṣataḥ mārgapāladyaṁ samullaṁghya nirujaḥ sukhino hi te
— kings, princes, and especially brahmins — and having passed beneath this "guardian of the road," they become free of disease and happy indeed.
Verse 45 (padma.6.122.45)
kṛtvaitatsarvameveha rātrau daityapaterbaleḥ pūjāṁ kuryāttataḥ sākṣādbhūmau maṁḍalake kṛte
Having done all this, at night one should then directly perform the worship of Bali, lord of the demons, having drawn a mandala on the ground —
Verse 46 (padma.6.122.46)
balimālikhya daityeṁdraṁ varṇakaiḥ paṁcaraṁgakaiḥ sarvābharaṇasaṁpūrṇaṁ viṁdhyāvalisamanvitam
— drawing there the demon-lord Bali with five colors of paint, fully adorned with every ornament, together with his queen Vindhyavali —
Verse 47 (padma.6.122.47)
kūṣmāṁḍamaya jaṁbhoru madhudānavasaṁvṛtam saṁpūrṇaṁ hṛṣṭavadanaṁ kirīṭotkaṭakuṁḍalam
— surrounded by Kushmanda, Jambha, and the demon Madhu; drawn in full, with a joyful face, a crown, and prominent earrings,
Verse 48 (padma.6.122.48)
dvibhujaṁ daityarājānaṁ kārayitvā svake punaḥ gṛhasya madhye śālāyāṁ viśālāyāṁ tato'rcayet
— having thus depicted the two-armed lord of the demons, in the great hall in the middle of one's own house, one should then worship him,
Verse 49 (padma.6.122.49)
mātṛbhrātṛjanaiḥ sārddhaṁ saṁtuṣṭo baṁdhubhiḥ saha kamalaiḥ kumudaiḥ puṣpaiḥ kalhārai raktakotpalaiḥ
— pleased, together with mother, brothers, and other kinsmen, with lotuses, white water-lilies, flowers, red lotuses and blue lotuses,
Verse 50 (padma.6.122.50)
gaṁdhapuṣpānnanaivedyaiḥ sakṣīrairguḍapāyasaiḥ madyamāṁsasurālehya coṣya bhakṣyopahārakaiḥ
— with scent, flowers, food-offerings, milk-sweets and jaggery-rice-pudding, and with wine, meat, liquor, and other things to be licked, sucked, or chewed as offerings —
Verse 51 (padma.6.122.51)
maṁtreṇānena rājeṁdra saḥ maṁtrī sapurohitaḥ pūjāṁ kariṣyate yo vai saukhyaṁ syāttasya vatsaram
— O foremost of kings, whatever minister, together with his priest, performs this worship with this mantra shall have happiness for the whole year.
Verse 52 (padma.6.122.52)
balirāja namastubhyaṁ virocanasuta prabho bhaviṣyeṁdra surārāte pūjeyaṁ pratigṛhyatām
"O King Bali, homage to you, O Lord, son of Virochana! O future Indra, O foe of the gods, may this worship be accepted by you."
Verse 53 (padma.6.122.53)
evaṁ pūjāvidhiṁ kṛtvā rātrau jāgaraṇaṁ tataḥ kārayedvai kṣaṇaṁ rātrau naṭanartakagāyakaiḥ
Having thus performed the rite of worship, one should then keep vigil at night, and for a while at night should arrange entertainment with actors, dancers, and singers.
Verse 54 (padma.6.122.54)
lokaiścāpi gṛhasyāṁte saparyāṁ śuklataṁḍulaiḥ saṁsthāpya balirājānaṁ phalaiḥ puṣpaiśca pūjayet
And by the household as well, at the end of the house, having established King Bali with white rice for worship, one should worship him with fruits and flowers.
Verse 55 (padma.6.122.55)
balimuddiśya vai tatra kāryaṁ sarvaṁ ca pāvake yāni yānyakṣayānyāhu ṛṣayastatvadarśinaḥ
There, everything should be done with Bali in mind, in this fire-lit night. Whatever the sages who see the truth have declared to be imperishable —
Verse 56 (padma.6.122.56)
yadatra dīyate dānaṁ svalpaṁ vā yadi vā bahu tadakṣayaṁ bhavetsarvaṁ viṣṇoḥ prītikaraṁ śubham
— whatever gift is given here, whether small or great, all of it becomes imperishable and auspicious, pleasing to Vishnu.
Verse 57 (padma.6.122.57)
rātrau ye na kariṣyaṁti tava pūjāṁ balernarāḥ teṣāmaśrotriyaṁ dharmaṁ sarvaṁ tvāmupatiṣṭhatu
[Vishnu says to Bali:] "Those men who do not perform your worship at night, O Bali — may all their merit even from non-Vedic dharma yet come to attend upon you."
Verse 58 (padma.6.122.58)
viṣṇunā ca svayaṁ vatsa tuṣṭena balaye punaḥ upakārakaraṁ dattamasurāṇāṁ mahotsavam
And, my child, by Vishnu Himself, being pleased, this great festival, beneficial to the demons, was granted to Bali.
Verse 59 (padma.6.122.59)
tadā prabhṛti senāne pravṛttā kaumudī sadā sarvopadravavidrāvā sarvavighnavināśinī
From that time onward, O commander, the festival called Kaumudi has been established forever, driving away all calamities and destroying all obstacles.
Verse 60 (padma.6.122.60)
lokaśokaharā kāmyā dhanapuṣṭisukhāvahā kuśabdena mahī jñeyā muda harṣe tato dvayam
It removes the world's sorrow, is desired by all, and brings wealth, abundance, and happiness. By the syllable "ku" the earth is meant; "muda" and "da" together mean joy and delight —
Verse 61 (padma.6.122.61)
dhātutve nigamaiścaiva tenaiṣā kaumudī smṛtā kaumodaṁ te janā yasmānnānābhāvaiḥ parasparam
— these roots being explained by the scriptures — and thus this festival is remembered as "Kaumudi." Since on it people express mutual joy toward one another in various ways —
Verse 62 (padma.6.122.62)
hṛṣṭatuṣṭāḥ sukhāpannāstenaiṣā kaumudī smṛtā kumudāni baleryasyāṁ dīyaṁte tena ṣaṇmukha
— being joyful, content, and happy, it is thus remembered as Kaumudi. O six-faced one, since white water-lilies are offered to Bali on it, [it is called Kaumudi] for that reason too.
Verse 63 (padma.6.122.63)
aghārthaṁ pārthivaiḥ putra tenaiṣā kaumudī smṛtā ekamevamahorātraṁ varṣevarṣe ca kārtike
My son, it is also remembered as Kaumudi because it is performed by kings for the removal of sin. This one single day and night, year after year, in Kartika,
Verse 64 (padma.6.122.64)
dattaṁ dānavarājasya ādarśamiva bhūtala yaḥ karoti nṛpo rājye tasya vyādhibhayaṁ kutaḥ
— has been given to the king of the Danavas as a kind of mirror-precedent on this earth. That king who observes this in his kingdom — whence for him the fear of disease?
Verse 65 (padma.6.122.65)
subhikṣaṁ kṣemamārogyaṁ tasya saṁpadanuttamā nīrujaśca janāḥ sarve sarvopadravavarjitāḥ
Abundance of food, security, and health, and unsurpassed prosperity, become his; and all his people become free of disease, and free of all calamity.
Verse 66 (padma.6.122.66)
kaumudī kriyate tasmādbhāvaṁ kartuṁ mahītale yo yādṛśena bhāvena tiṣṭhatyasyāṁ ca ṣaṇmukha
Therefore Kaumudi is performed in order to establish good feeling on the earth. O six-faced one, whoever remains in whatever state of feeling on this day —
Verse 67 (padma.6.122.67)
harṣaduḥkhādibhāvena tasya varṣaṁ prayāti hi rudite rodate varṣaṁ hṛṣṭe varṣaṁ praharṣitam
— through joy, sorrow, or other feeling, his whole year passes accordingly. If one weeps, the year passes in weeping; if one rejoices, the year passes in rejoicing.
Verse 68 (padma.6.122.68)
bhukte bhoktā bhavedvarṣaṁ svasthe svasthaṁ bhaviṣyati tasmātprahṛṣṭaiḥ karttavyā kaumudī ca śubhairnaraiḥ
If one eats well, one shall enjoy good food the whole year; if one is at ease, one shall remain at ease. Therefore Kaumudi should be observed by good men in a state of joy.
Verse 69 (padma.6.122.69)
vaiṣṇavī dānavī ceyaṁ tithiḥ proktā ca kārtike
Thus this day in Kartika is declared to be both Vaishnava and Danava — belonging to both Vishnu's devotees and to the Danavas.
Verse 70 (padma.6.122.70)
dīpotsavaṁjanita sarvajanaprasādaṁ kurvaṁti ye śubhatayā balirājapūjām dānopabhogasukhabuddhimatāṁ kulānāṁ harṣaṁ prayāti sakalaṁ prabhudaṁ ca varṣam
Those who, with the goodwill of all people arising from the festival of lamps, auspiciously perform the worship of King Bali — for the families of those wise in giving, enjoyment, and happiness, the whole year passes filled with joy and delight.
Verse 71 (padma.6.122.71)
skaṁdaitāstithayo nūnaṁ dvitīyādyāśca viśrutāḥ māsaiścaturbhiśca tataḥprāvṛṭkāle śubhāvahāḥ
O Skanda, these lunar days, indeed, beginning with the second tithi, are well known and auspicious, occurring over four months from the rainy season onward.
Verse 72 (padma.6.122.72)
prathamā śrāvaṇe māsi tathā bhādrapade parā tṛtīyāśvayujemāsi caturthī kārtike bhavet
The first is in the month of Shravana; the next in Bhadrapada; the third in the month of Ashvina; and the fourth occurs in Kartika.
Verse 73 (padma.6.122.73)
kaluṣā śrāvaṇe māsi tathā bhādrapademalā āśvine pretasaṁcārā kārtike yāmyakāmatā
These are called: Kalusha ["Turbid"] in the month of Shravana; Amala ["Pure"] in Bhadrapada; Pretasanchara ["Movement of Spirits"] in Ashvina; and Yamyakamata in Kartika.
Verse 74 (padma.6.122.74)
guha uvāca kasmātsā kaluṣā proktā kasmātsā nirmalā matā kasmātsā pretasaṁcārā kasmādyāmyā prakīrtitā
Guha said: Why is that day called Kalusha? Why is that considered Nirmala? Why is that called Pretasanchara, and why is that celebrated as Yamya?
Verse 75 (padma.6.122.75)
sūta uvāca iti skaṁdavacaḥ śrutvā bhagavānbhūtabhāvanaḥ uvāca vacanaṁ ślakṣṇaṁ prahasanvṛṣabhadhvajaḥ
Sūta said: Hearing these words of Skanda, the Lord, the creator of beings, whose banner bears the bull, spoke gentle words with a smile.
Verse 76 (padma.6.122.76)
maheśa uvāca purā vṛtravadhe vṛtte prāpte rājye puraṁdare brahmahatyāpanodārthamaśvamedhaḥ pravartitaḥ
Mahesha said: Long ago, when the slaying of Vritra had occurred and Purandara [Indra] had regained his kingdom, an Ashvamedha sacrifice was undertaken for the removal of the sin of killing a brahmin.
Verse 77 (padma.6.122.77)
krodhādiṁdreṇa vajreṇa brahmahatyā niṣūditā ṣaḍvidhā sā kṣitau kṣiptā vṛkṣatoyamahītale
In anger, Indra struck down the demon of Brahmahatya with his thunderbolt. She, divided into six parts, was cast down upon the earth — into trees, water, and the ground,
Verse 78 (padma.6.122.78)
nāryāṁ bhrūṇahaṇivahnau saṁvibhajya yathākramam tatpāpaśravaṇātpūrvaṁ dvitīyāyā dinena ca
— into women, into the killer of an embryo, and into fire, divided in due order. Before that, by hearing of that sin, and by the day of the second tithi —
Verse 79 (padma.6.122.79)
nārīvṛkṣanadībhūmivahnibhrūṇahanastathā kaluṣībhavanaṁ jāto hyatorthaṁ kaluṣā smṛtā
— in women, trees, rivers, the earth, fire, and the killer of an embryo, a state of turbidity arose; for this reason it is remembered as Kalusha.
Verse 80 (padma.6.122.80)
madhukaiṭabhayo rakte purā magnānu medinī aṣṭāṁgulā pavitrā sā nārīṇāṁ tu rajomalam
Of old, the earth was submerged in the blood of Madhu and Kaitabha. [As a consequence, for women,] the impurity of menstruation, extending eight fingers' breadth, is that turbid substance.
Verse 81 (padma.6.122.81)
nadyaḥ prāvṛṇmalā sarvā vahnirūrdhvaṁ maṣīmalaḥ niryāsamalinā vṛkṣāḥ saṁgādbhrūṇahano malāḥ
All the rivers become impure during the rains; fire, when its flame rises, has soot as its impurity; trees are made impure by their oozing sap; and the killer of an embryo bears impurity through association with that sin.
Verse 82 (padma.6.122.82)
kaluṣāni caraṁtyasyāṁ tenaiṣā kaluṣā matā devarṣipitṛdharmāṇāṁ niṁdakā nāstikāḥ śaṭhāḥ
Since impure acts are performed on this day, it is thus considered Kalusha. Those who slander the gods, sages, ancestors, and dharma — the atheists, the deceitful —
Verse 83 (padma.6.122.83)
teṣāṁ sā vāṅmalātpūtā dvitīyā tena nirmalā anadhyāyeṣu śāstrāṇi pāṭhayaṁti paṭhaṁti ca
— from the impurity of their speech, this second day is purified, and thus called Nirmala. [On the other hand, those who] teach and study the scriptures even during periods forbidden for study —
Verse 84 (padma.6.122.84)
sāṁkhyakāstārkikāḥ śrautāsteṣāṁ śabdāpaśabdajāt malātpūtā dvitīyāyāṁ tatorthe nirmalā ca sā
— followers of Sankhya, logicians, and followers of the Shruti — from the impurity born of their misused correct and incorrect words, this same day is purified on the second tithi; for this reason too it is called Nirmala.
Verse 85 (padma.6.122.85)
kṛṣṇasya janmanā vatsa trailokyaṁ pāvitaṁ bhavet nabhasyete vinirdiṣṭā nirmalā sā tithirbudhaiḥ
My child, by the birth of Krishna on this day in an earlier era, the three worlds became purified. In the month of Nabhas [Bhadrapada], this tithi is thus designated by the wise as Nirmala.
Verse 86 (padma.6.122.86)
agniṣvāttā barhiṣada ājyapāḥ somapāstathā pitṝnpitāmahānpretasaṁcārātpretasaṁcarā
The classes of ancestors — the Agnishvattas, the Barhishads, the Ajyapas, and the Somapas — since on this day there is a movement of these forefathers and grandfathers as spirits, it is called Pretasanchara.
Verse 87 (padma.6.122.87)
pretāstu pitaraḥ proktāsteṣāṁ tasyāṁ tu saṁcaraḥ putrapautrestudauhitraiḥ svadhāmaṁtraistu pūjitāḥ
The ancestors are indeed called "pretas," and their movement occurs on that day. Worshipped by sons, grandsons, and daughters' sons with the "svadha" offerings and mantras —
Verse 88 (padma.6.122.88)
śrāddhadānamakhaistṛptā yāṁtyataḥ pretasaṁcarā mahālaye tu pretānāṁ saṁcāro bhuvi dṛśyate
— satisfied by shraddha rites, gifts, and sacrifices, they then depart; hence it is called Pretasanchara. During the Mahalaya, the movement of these spirits is indeed seen upon the earth.
Verse 89 (padma.6.122.89)
tenaiṣā pretasaṁcārā kīrtitā śikhivāhana yamasya kriyate pūjā yato'syā pāvake naraiḥ
For this reason, O rider of the peacock, it is celebrated as Pretasanchara. Because on this fire-lit night, in Kartika, the worship of Yama is performed by men —
Verse 90 (padma.6.122.90)
tenaiṣā yāmyakā proktā satyaṁ satyaṁ mayoditam etatkārtikamāhātmyaṁ ye śṛṇvaṁti narottamāḥ
— it is thus called Yamyaka. Truly, truly have I spoken this. Those best of men who hear this glory of Kartika —
Verse 91 (padma.6.122.91)
kārtikasnānajaṁ puṇyaṁ teṣāṁ bhavati niścitam
— certainly obtain for themselves the merit born of bathing in Kartika.
Verse 92 (padma.6.122.92)
kārtike ca dvitīyāyāṁ pūrvāhṇe yamamarcayet bhānujāyāṁ naraḥ snātvā yamalokaṁ na paśyati
On the second tithi of Kartika, in the forenoon, one should worship Yama. Whatever man bathes on this "Bhanuja" day does not behold the world of Yama.
Verse 93 (padma.6.122.93)
kārtike śuklapakṣe tu dvitīyāyāṁ tu śaunaka yamo yamunayā pūrvaṁ bhojitaḥ svagṛhe'citaḥ
O Shaunaka, on the second tithi of the bright fortnight of Kartika, Yama was once fed by Yamuna and honored in her own house.
Verse 94 (padma.6.122.94)
dvitīyāyāṁ mahotsargo nārakīyāśca tarpitāḥ pāpebhyo viprayuktāste muktāḥ sarvanibaṁdhanāt
On this second tithi there is a great act of release, and the dwellers of hell are satisfied; freed from their sins, they become liberated from every bondage.
Verse 95 (padma.6.122.95)
āśaṁsitāśca saṁtuṣṭāḥ sthitāḥ sarve yadṛcchayā teṣāṁ mahotsavo vṛtto yamarāṣṭrasukhāvahaḥ
Hopeful and content, they all abide freely wherever they wish; for them a great festival takes place, bringing happiness throughout the realm of Yama.
Verse 96 (padma.6.122.96)
Therefore this "Yama-Dvitiya" is renowned in the three worlds. Hence, O brahmin, the wise should not eat in their own house on that day.
Verse 97 (padma.6.122.97)
snehena bhaginīhastādbhoktavyaṁ puṣṭivarddhanaṁ dānāni ca pradeyāni bhaginībhyo vidhānataḥ
One should eat nourishing food, with affection, from the hand of one's sister; and gifts should duly be given to sisters —
Verse 98 (padma.6.122.98)
svarṇālaṁkāravastrāṇi pūjāsatkārasaṁyutam bhoktavyaṁ saha jāyāśca bhaginyāhastataḥ param
— gold ornaments, and clothes, along with respectful honoring. And after that, one should eat together with one's wife, from the hand of one's sister.
Verse 99 (padma.6.122.99)
sarvāsu bhaginīhastādbhoktavyaṁ balavarddhanam ūrje śukladvitīyāyāṁ pūjitastarpito yamaḥ
Strength-giving food should be eaten from the hands of all one's sisters. On the second tithi of the bright fortnight of Urja [Kartika], Yama, thus worshipped and satisfied —
Verse 100 (padma.6.122.100)
mahiṣāsanamārūḍho daṁḍamudgarabhṛtprabhuḥ veṣṭitaḥ kiṁkaraihṛṣṭaistasmai yāmyātmane namaḥ
— mounted upon his buffalo throne, the Lord bearing rod and mace, surrounded by his joyful attendants — homage to him, the very self of Yama.
Verse 101 (padma.6.122.101)
yairbhaginyaḥ suvāsinyo vastradānādi toṣitāḥ na teṣāṁ vatsaraṁ yāvatkalaho na riporbhayam
By whomever their married sisters have been pleased with the gift of clothes and the like — for them, for the whole year, there is neither quarrel nor fear of enemies.
Verse 102 (padma.6.122.102)
dhanyaṁ yaśasyamāyuṣyaṁ dharmakāmārthasādhanam vyākhyātaṁ sakalaṁ putra sarahasyaṁ mayānagha
My son, O sinless one, all of this — blessed, conferring fame and long life, and a means to dharma, kama, and artha — has been explained by me, together with its inner meaning.
Verse 103 (padma.6.122.103)
yasyāṁ tithau yamunayā yamarājadevaḥ saṁbhojitaḥ pratitithau svasṛsauhṛdena tasmātsvasuḥ karatalādiha yo bhunakti prāpnoti vittaśubhasaṁpadamuttamāṁ saḥ
On that same tithi, year after year, when King Yama is fed by Yamuna out of a sister's loving affection — whoever, in this world, eats from the hand of his own sister on that day obtains supreme wealth and auspicious prosperity.
