The Glory of the Gita's Sixth Chapter: King Janashruti and Raikva

Chapter 179All chaptersChapter 181

Verse 1 (padma.6.180.1)

śrībhagavānuvāca ṣaṣṭhādhyāyasya māhātmyaṃ pravakṣyāmi varānane yadākarṇayatāṃ nṝṇāṃ muktiḥ karatale sthitā

The Blessed Lord said: I shall now tell the glory of the sixth chapter, O fair-faced one; for men who merely listen to it, liberation stands ready in the very palm of their hand.

Verse 2 (padma.6.180.2)

asti godāvarī tīre pratiṣṭhānaṃ puraṃ mahat pippaleśābhidhāno'haṃ yatrāsmi smeralocane

On the bank of the Godavari there is a great city called Pratishthana, where I myself abide under the name Pippalesha, O smiling-eyed one.

Verse 3 (padma.6.180.3)

yatra godāvarī tīra śīkarairavaśītalaiḥ haṃsāḥ pakṣapuṭaiḥ kīrṇairharaṃti yamināṃ śramam

There, on the bank of the Godavari, swans, scattering cool spray with the beating of their wings, take away the weariness of ascetics.

Verse 4 (padma.6.180.4)

sphuratpadmāvalīkośaparāgasurabhīkṛtam ślāghyaṃ godāvarītoyaṃ yena te nirjarā narāḥ

The praiseworthy water of the Godavari, made fragrant by the pollen from rows of blossoming lotus-buds, is such that men who bathe in it become as gods, free of decay.

Verse 5 (padma.6.180.5)

dhiksudhāmauṣadhīśasya vikṛtkṣayavidhāyinīm mahārāṣṭravadhūkānāṃ majjaṃtīnāṃ munīśvarāḥ

Fie upon the nectar of the moon that causes waning and decay! -- for even the sages, beholding the women of Maharashtra bathing there,

Verse 6 (padma.6.180.6)

spṛśaṃti yatra vaktrāṇi phullapaṃkajaśaṃkayā yatrakhelanmahārāṣṭrāḥ kvaṇatkaṃkaṇasuṃdarāḥ

touch their own faces, mistaking them for full-blown lotuses; where the women of Maharashtra sport, beautiful with tinkling bracelets,

Verse 7 (padma.6.180.7)

haraṃti dhvanayo līnāṃ manāṃsyapi tapasvinām atyuccasaudhaśikharavihāri vanitāmukham

and the very sounds of their bangles steal away even the concentrated minds of ascetics; where the faces of women disporting on the summits of the loftiest palaces,

Verse 8 (padma.6.180.8)

paśyannanudinaṃ yatra kṣīyate mṛgalāṃcchanaḥ atyuccasaudhavalabhī mahāmaṇimarīcibhiḥ

beheld daily, cause even the moon, marked with the deer, to wane with envy; where the ridges of the loftiest palace-roofs, by the rays of great jewels,

Verse 9 (padma.6.180.9)

cuṃbyaṃte munigaṃdharvairdūrvācaṃdanacaṃcalaiḥ yasminnādhūyamānānāṃ patākānāṃ samīraṇaiḥ

are, as it were, kissed by sages and Gandharvas fickle for durva-grass and sandal; where, by the breezes stirring the fluttering banners,

Verse 10 (padma.6.180.10)

gataśramā raveryāne bhavaṃti rathavājinaḥ rāśīkṛtairmalayajairasaṃkhyātairvaṇiggaṇaiḥ

even the horses drawing the sun's own chariot become free of fatigue; where, by the countless heaps of sandalwood piled up by throngs of merchants,

Verse 11 (padma.6.180.11)

yasminnupalaśeṣo'sau lakṣyate malayācalaḥ puṃjīkṛtāni dṛśyaṃte yatra muktāphalānyapi

the very Malaya mountain seems reduced to a mere heap of stones; where heaps of pearls too are seen gathered together,

Verse 12 (padma.6.180.12)

nagarīdevatā hāsya stabakā iva sarvataḥ tatra jñānaśrutirnāmnā medinīvallabho'bhavat

as though they were, everywhere, mere clusters of the smiling laughter of the city's own presiding goddess. There, a lord of the earth named Janashruti once lived.

Verse 13 (padma.6.180.13)

yasminnuddharati kṣoṇīṃ śeṣo'yaṃ maṇisaṃnibhāṃ api pratāpamārtaṃḍamaṃḍalī tīvratejasi

In whose reign this Shesha upheld the earth as though it were a mere jewel, even while the very orb of the sun of his own valor blazed with fierce splendor;

Verse 14 (padma.6.180.14)

nityamadhvaradhūmena śyāmalāḥ kalpaśākhinaḥ asādhāraṇadātṛtvaṃ paśyaṃta iva lajjayā

in whose reign the wish-fulfilling trees, ever darkened by the smoke of sacrifice, seemed, out of very shame, to behold his unparalleled generosity;

Verse 15 (padma.6.180.15)

yadadhvarapuroḍāśa carvaṇāsvādalaṃpaṭāḥ na tatyajuḥ suparvāṇaḥ pratiṣṭhānapuraṃ manāk

in whose reign the gods themselves, addicted to the taste of chewing the sacrificial cakes at his rites, would not leave the city of Pratishthana even for a moment;

Verse 16 (padma.6.180.16)

yasyadānāṃbudhārābhiḥ pratāpajyotsnayāniśam makhadhūmaiśca saṃpuṣṭā vavṛṣuḥ samaye ghanāḥ

in whose kingdom the clouds, nourished continually by the streams of his gifts, by the moonlight of his valor, and by the smoke of his sacrifices, rained down at the proper season;

Verse 17 (padma.6.180.17)

svalpamātramapi kvāpi na padaṃ prāpurītayaḥ nītayaḥ prasaraṃti sma yasminśāsati medinīm

in whose reign calamities gained not even the slightest foothold anywhere, while the very principles of right conduct spread throughout the earth as he ruled it;

Verse 18 (padma.6.180.18)

vāpikūpataḍāgānāṃ cchadmanā yo'nuvāsaram hṛdayasthāni medinyā nidhānāni vyalokayat

who, under the pretext of building wells, tanks, and reservoirs day after day, thereby beheld the very treasures hidden within the heart of the earth.

Verse 19 (padma.6.180.19)

pāṃḍurābhiḥ patākābhiḥ prāsādo yasya rājate viyadgaṃgātaraṃgoghairhimādririva sānumān

His palace, with its white banners, shone like the snowy mountain Himalaya, crowned with the streaming waves of the celestial Ganga.

Verse 20 (padma.6.180.20)

dānaistapobhiryajñaiśca prajānāṃ pālanena ca tuṣṭāḥ svargaukasastasmai varaṃ dātuṃ samāgaman

Pleased with his gifts, his austerities, his sacrifices, and his protection of his subjects, the dwellers of heaven came together to grant him a boon.

Verse 21 (padma.6.180.21)

tatoṃtarikṣamārgeṇa dhunvānāḥ pakṣasaṃhatīḥ mṛṇāladhavalā devī devahaṃsā vinirgatāḥ

Then, along the path of the sky, shaking their gathered wings, divine swans, white as lotus-fibers, set forth.

Verse 22 (padma.6.180.22)

tvarayā gacchatāṃ teṣāmanyonyaṃ tatra bhāṣiṇām bhadrāśvapramukhā dvitrāḥ purastānniryayurjavāt

As they hastened along, speaking to one another, two or three of them, led by one named Bhadrashva, sped forward, out ahead of the rest.

Verse 23 (padma.6.180.23)

sarvairmiladbhirūcuste purastādgacchato javāt kathaṃ vegena niryātā bhavaṃtaḥ purataḥ sthitāḥ

All the others, joining together, said to those who had rushed ahead: 'Why have you sped forth so swiftly, going out in front of the rest?'

Verse 24 (padma.6.180.24)

'We should all travel together on this difficult path. Do you not see that mass of light shining before us --'

Verse 25 (padma.6.180.25)

jñānaśrutermahībhartuḥ puṇyamūrtteratisphuṭam niśamyeti vacaḥ samyakpāścātyānā puraḥ sthitāḥ

'-- the most evident radiance of Janashruti, lord of the earth, the very embodiment of merit?' Having duly heard these words, those who had rushed ahead, now standing before the others,

Verse 26 (padma.6.180.26)

haṃsā hasitvā sāvajñamūcurvacanamuccakaiḥ raikyābhidhasya durddharṣa tejaso brahmavādinaḥ

the swans, laughing scornfully, said aloud these words: 'What, indeed, is this radiance of King Janashruti, in comparison,'

Verse 27 (padma.6.180.27)
