The Glory of the Gita's Eighteenth Chapter
Verse 1 (padma.6.192.1)
पावर्त्युवाच- उक्तं सप्तदशाध्यायगौरवं भवता शिव । स त्वमष्टादशाध्यायमहिमानमुदीरय
pāvartyuvāca- uktaṁ saptadaśādhyāyagauravaṁ bhavatā śiva sa tvamaṣṭādaśādhyāyamahimānamudīraya
Parvati said: You have told the greatness of the seventeenth chapter, O Shiva; now declare the glory of the eighteenth chapter.
Verse 2 (padma.6.192.2)
ईश्वर उवाच-। आकर्णय चिदानंद निष्पादि निगमोत्तरम् । पुण्यमष्टादशाध्यायमाहात्म्यं गिरिनंदिनि
īśvara uvāca- ākarṇaya cidānaṁda niṣpādi nigamottaram puṇyamaṣṭādaśādhyāyamāhātmyaṁ girinaṁdini
Ishvara said: Listen, O daughter of the mountain, to the sacred glory of the eighteenth chapter, which brings forth consciousness and bliss, the very culmination of the Vedas.
Verse 3 (padma.6.192.3)
समस्तशास्त्रसर्वस्वं श्रोत्रप्राप्तं रसायनम् । संसारयातनाजालविदारणपरायणम्
samastaśāstrasarvasvaṁ śrotraprāptaṁ rasāyanam saṁsārayātanājālavidāraṇaparāyaṇam
It is the very essence of all the scriptures, an elixir gained through the ear, wholly devoted to rending apart the web of worldly torment.
Verse 4 (padma.6.192.4)
परं रहस्यं सिद्धानामविद्योन्मूलनक्षमम् । चैतन्यं कैटभारातेरग्रगण्यं परं पदम्
paraṁ rahasyaṁ siddhānāmavidyonmūlanakṣamam caitanyaṁ kaiṭabhārāteragragaṇyaṁ paraṁ padam
It is the supreme secret of the perfected ones, capable of uprooting ignorance, the very consciousness of Vishnu, the foe of Kaitabha, foremost among supreme states.
Verse 5 (padma.6.192.5)
विवेकवल्लरीमूलं कामक्रोधमलापहम् । पुरंदरादिगीर्वाणचित्तविश्रामकारकम्
vivekavallarīmūlaṁ kāmakrodhamalāpaham puraṁdarādigīrvāṇacittaviśrāmakārakam
It is the root of the creeper of discernment, remover of the stain of desire and anger, giver of rest to the minds of the gods beginning with Indra.
Verse 6 (padma.6.192.6)
सनकादिमहायोगिमनोरंजनकारणम् । पाठमात्रपराभूतकालकिंकरगर्जितम्
sanakādimahāyogimanoraṁjanakāraṇam pāṭhamātraparābhūtakālakiṁkaragarjitam
It is the cause of delight for the great yogis beginning with Sanaka; by its mere recitation, the roaring of Death's own servants is overcome.
Verse 7 (padma.6.192.7)
अष्टोत्तरशतव्याधिमूलोन्मूलनकारकम् । नातः परतरं किंचिद्रहस्यं हंसगामिनि
aṣṭottaraśatavyādhimūlonmūlanakārakam nātaḥ parataraṁ kiṁcidrahasyaṁ haṁsagāmini
It uproots the very root of the hundred and eight diseases; there is no secret beyond this, O swan-gaited one.
Verse 8 (padma.6.192.8)
उपतापत्रयहरं महापातकनाशनम् । यथाकालेष्वहं नित्यो यथा पशुषु कामधुक्
upatāpatrayaharaṁ mahāpātakanāśanam yathākāleṣvahaṁ nityo yathā paśuṣu kāmadhuk
It removes the threefold affliction, destroys great sins; as I am eternal among the measures of time, as the wish-granting cow is among cattle—
Verse 9 (padma.6.192.9)
यथा व्यासो मुनींद्रेषु व्यासेषु ब्रह्मवित्तमः । यथा दिवौकसां शक्रो गुरुः शक्राद्यथा वरः
yathā vyāso munīṁdreṣu vyāseṣu brahmavittamaḥ yathā divaukasāṁ śakro guruḥ śakrādyathā varaḥ
—as Vyasa, most knowing of Brahman, is foremost among the compilers and lords of sages; as Indra is chief among the gods, as Brihaspati is superior even to Indra—
Verse 10 (padma.6.192.10)
यथा रसानां पीयूषमुत्तमं विश्वविश्रुतम् । तथा गिरीणां कैलासो यथा चेंद्रो दिवौकसाम्
yathā rasānāṁ pīyūṣamuttamaṁ viśvaviśrutam tathā girīṇāṁ kailāso yathā ceṁdro divaukasām
—as nectar is the best of tastes, renowned throughout the world; so is Kailasa among mountains, as Indra is among the dwellers of heaven—
Verse 11 (padma.6.192.11)
तीर्थानां पुष्करं तीर्थं यथा पुष्पेषु पंकजम् । पतिव्रतासु नारीषु यथा लोकेष्वरुंधती
tīrthānāṁ puṣkaraṁ tīrthaṁ yathā puṣpeṣu paṁkajam pativratāsu nārīṣu yathā lokeṣvaruṁdhatī
—as Pushkara is the tirtha among tirthas, as the lotus is among flowers, as Arundhati is among chaste women in all the worlds—
Verse 12 (padma.6.192.12)
यथा मखेष्वश्वमेधो यथोद्यानेषु नंदनम् । यथारुद्रेषु सर्वेषु वीरभद्रो ममानुगः
yathā makheṣvaśvamedho yathodyāneṣu naṁdanam yathārudreṣu sarveṣu vīrabhadro mamānugaḥ
—as the Ashvamedha is among sacrifices, as Nandana is among gardens, as Virabhadra, my own attendant, is among all the Rudras—
Verse 13 (padma.6.192.13)
यथा दानेषु भूदानं यथा सिंधुषु गौतमी । यथा लोके हरिक्षेत्रं प्रशस्तं धर्मकर्मसु
yathā dāneṣu bhūdānaṁ yathā siṁdhuṣu gautamī yathā loke harikṣetraṁ praśastaṁ dharmakarmasu
—as the gift of land is among gifts, as the Gautami is among rivers, as Harikshetra is renowned in the world for acts of dharma—
Verse 14 (padma.6.192.14)
तथैवाष्टादशाध्यायमाहात्म्यं भुवनोत्तरम् । तत्राख्यानमिदं पुण्यं भक्त्याकर्णय पार्वति
tathaivāṣṭādaśādhyāyamāhātmyaṁ bhuvanottaram tatrākhyānamidaṁ puṇyaṁ bhaktyākarṇaya pārvati
—just so is the glory of the eighteenth chapter supreme in all the worlds. Hear now, O Parvati, with devotion, this sacred narrative concerning it—
Verse 15 (padma.6.192.15)
यथाकर्णनमात्रेण जंतुः पापैः प्रमुच्यते । अस्ति मेरुगिरेः शृंगे पुरी रम्यामरावती
yathākarṇanamātreṇa jaṁtuḥ pāpaiḥ pramucyate asti merugireḥ śṛṁge purī ramyāmarāvatī
—merely by hearing which a creature is freed from sins. On the peak of Mount Meru there is a lovely city, Amaravati—
Verse 16 (padma.6.192.16)
पुरा मम विनोदाय निर्मिता विश्वकर्मणा । निरंतरं गुणयुता कोटिगीर्वाणसेविता
purā mama vinodāya nirmitā viśvakarmaṇā niraṁtaraṁ guṇayutā koṭigīrvāṇasevitā
—built long ago by Vishvakarma for my own delight, endowed with virtues without end, served by tens of millions of gods—
Verse 17 (padma.6.192.17)
तेजःपुंजवती साक्षाद्ब्रह्मविद्येव विश्रुता । चिंतामणिशिलाबद्धाः प्रासादा यत्र कामदाः
tejaḥpuṁjavatī sākṣādbrahmavidyeva viśrutā ciṁtāmaṇiśilābaddhāḥ prāsādā yatra kāmadāḥ
—a very mass of splendor, renowned as if it were the knowledge of Brahman itself, where palaces set with wish-granting gems grant every desire—
Verse 18 (padma.6.192.18)
जयंति मेरुशिखरे चतुर्मुखपुरावधि । यत्र कल्पद्रुमच्छाया सुखासीना पुलोमजा
jayaṁti meruśikhare caturmukhapurāvadhi yatra kalpadrumacchāyā sukhāsīnā pulomajā
—triumphant, on the peak of Meru, extending as far as the city of the four-faced Brahma; where, seated at ease in the shade of the wish-fulfilling tree, Pulomaja—
Verse 19 (padma.6.192.19)
शृणोति श्यामला गीर्भिर्गीतं गंधर्वयोषिताम् । यत्रास्ते सबलारातिर्देवैश्च दलितायुषाम्
śṛṇoti śyāmalā gīrbhirgītaṁ gaṁdharvayoṣitām yatrāste sabalārātirdevaiśca dalitāyuṣām
—dark-hued, listens to the songs sung by gandharva women; where dwells the foe of Bala, and, together with the gods, over demons whose lives waste away—
Verse 20 (padma.6.192.20)
दैत्यानां रक्तकल्लोलैः स्वर्धुनी शोणतां गता । पुरातनसुधास्वादु स्मारं स्मारं दिवौकसः
daityānāṁ raktakallolaiḥ svardhunī śoṇatāṁ gatā purātanasudhāsvādu smāraṁ smāraṁ divaukasaḥ
—the celestial river turned red with the surging waves of demons' blood; where the gods, again and again recalling the ancient taste of nectar, emaciated with hunger—
Verse 21 (padma.6.192.21)
धयंति यत्र क्षुत्क्षामा कलां प्रत्यहमैंदवीम् । तस्यां कैवल्यकल्पायामासीत्पूर्वं शतक्रतुः
dhayaṁti yatra kṣutkṣāmā kalāṁ pratyahamaiṁdavīm tasyāṁ kaivalyakalpāyāmāsītpūrvaṁ śatakratuḥ
—drink daily a portion of the moon's nectar. In that city, resembling liberation itself, there once lived Shatakratu—
Verse 22 (padma.6.192.22)
शची समन्वितः श्रीमान्सर्वगीर्वाणसेवितः । स कदाचित्सुखासीनो विष्णुदूतैरधिश्रितम्
śacī samanvitaḥ śrīmānsarvagīrvāṇasevitaḥ sa kadācitsukhāsīno viṣṇudūtairadhiśritam
—together with Shachi, glorious, served by all the gods. Once, sitting at ease, he saw, attended by the messengers of Vishnu—
Verse 23 (padma.6.192.23)
सहस्रनेत्रमायांतमपश्यत्पुरुषं परम् । ततस्तदीय तेजोभिरभिभूतः पुरंदरः
sahasranetramāyāṁtamapaśyatpuruṣaṁ param tatastadīya tejobhirabhibhūtaḥ puraṁdaraḥ
—a thousand-eyed supreme being approaching; then Indra, overwhelmed by his splendor—
Verse 24 (padma.6.192.24)
मणिसिंहासनात्तूर्णं पतितः स्थानमंडपे । सिंहासनात्प्रयातस्य ततस्तस्य हरेर्भटाः
maṇisiṁhāsanāttūrṇaṁ patitaḥ sthānamaṁḍape siṁhāsanātprayātasya tatastasya harerbhaṭāḥ
—fell at once from his jeweled throne in the audience-hall. Then, as he departed from the throne, the attendants of Hari—
Verse 25 (padma.6.192.25)
गीर्वाणगणसाम्राज्य पट्टबंधं वितेनिरे । अथ तस्याभिषिक्तस्य महेंद्रस्य पुलोमजा
gīrvāṇagaṇasāmrājya paṭṭabaṁdhaṁ vitenire atha tasyābhiṣiktasya maheṁdrasya pulomajā
—performed the coronation-rite for sovereignty over the gods, for that new being. Then Pulomaja—
Verse 26 (padma.6.192.26)
वामांकमारुरोहाशु दिव्यदुंदुंभिनिःस्वनैः । अथ त्रिदिवसंगीत गीर्वाणाः प्रमदान्विताः
vāmāṁkamārurohāśu divyaduṁduṁbhiniḥsvanaiḥ atha tridivasaṁgīta gīrvāṇāḥ pramadānvitāḥ
—at once ascended to that new Indra's left side, amid the sound of divine kettledrums. Then the gods, joined by the songs of heaven, filled with joy—
Verse 27 (padma.6.192.27)
सुरा नीराजयामासुर्दिव्यरत्नैः सुरस्त्रियः । ततो वै ऋषयो वेदैराशीर्वादास्तदा ददुः
surā nīrājayāmāsurdivyaratnaiḥ surastriyaḥ tato vai ṛṣayo vedairāśīrvādāstadā daduḥ
—performed the auspicious waving-of-lamps ceremony; the celestial women waved lamps with divine jewels; and then the sages gave blessings with Vedic mantras.
Verse 28 (padma.6.192.28)
रंभाद्या ननृतुस्तस्य पुरस्तादप्सरोगणाः । गंधर्वा ललितालापाञ्जगुर्मंगलकौतुकम्
raṁbhādyā nanṛtustasya purastādapsarogaṇāḥ gaṁdharvā lalitālāpāñjagurmaṁgalakautukam
The troupes of apsaras beginning with Rambha danced before him; the gandharvas sang delightful, auspicious songs of celebration.
Verse 29 (padma.6.192.29)
एवं नूतनमिंद्रं तु जुष्टं बहुभिरुत्सवैः । विना शतक्रतुं दृष्ट्वा शक्रो विस्मयमाययौ
evaṁ nūtanamiṁdraṁ tu juṣṭaṁ bahubhirutsavaiḥ vinā śatakratuṁ dṛṣṭvā śakro vismayamāyayau
Seeing this new Indra thus honored with many festivities, in which he — Shatakratu — had no part, Shakra grew astonished—
Verse 30 (padma.6.192.30)
न मया विहिता मार्गे तडागा न विनिर्मिताः । न रोपिता महावृक्षाः पांथविश्रांतिकारकः
na mayā vihitā mārge taḍāgā na vinirmitāḥ na ropitā mahāvṛkṣāḥ pāṁthaviśrāṁtikārakaḥ
—thinking to himself: 'I never had ponds dug along roadsides, nor built them; I never planted great shade-trees for the rest of travelers—'
Verse 31 (padma.6.192.31)
न कदाचिदहो दृष्टो देवस्त्रिपुरभैरवः । निधिवासे स्थिता देवी पूजिता न मदालसा
na kadācidaho dṛṣṭo devastripurabhairavaḥ nidhivāse sthitā devī pūjitā na madālasā
'—alas, I have never once beheld the god Tripurabhairava; nor worshipped, in my indolence, the goddess dwelling at Nidhivasa—'
Verse 32 (padma.6.192.32)
मेघंकरस्थितः शार्ङ्गधरो नैव निरीक्षितः । न कृतं विरजे स्नानं नैवं काशीं पुरीं गतः
meghaṁkarasthitaḥ śārṅgadharo naiva nirīkṣitaḥ na kṛtaṁ viraje snānaṁ naivaṁ kāśīṁ purīṁ gataḥ
'—I have never beheld the bow-bearing Lord dwelling at Meghankara; I have not bathed at Viraja, nor even gone to the city of Kashi—'
Verse 33 (padma.6.192.33)
न देववाटिकावासी दृष्टो नरहरिः स्वयम् । एरंडविष्णुर्हेरंबो न जातु परिशीलितः
na devavāṭikāvāsī dṛṣṭo narahariḥ svayam eraṁḍaviṣṇurheraṁbo na jātu pariśīlitaḥ
'—I have never seen with my own eyes the man-lion dwelling in Devavatika; I have never once honored Eranda-Vishnu or Heramba—'
Verse 34 (padma.6.192.34)
रेणुकानेक्षिता जातु माता पुरनिवासिनी । न भक्त्या पूजिता देवी दाना पुरनिवासिनी
reṇukānekṣitā jātu mātā puranivāsinī na bhaktyā pūjitā devī dānā puranivāsinī
'—I have never beheld Mother Renuka, dweller of that city; nor worshipped with devotion the goddess Dana, dweller of that city—'
Verse 35 (padma.6.192.35)
न भक्त्या त्रिपुरे दृष्टस्त्रिलिंगस्त्र्यंबकः स्वयम् । न शार्दूलतडागस्थो वीक्षितः सोमनाथकः
na bhaktyā tripure dṛṣṭastriliṁgastryaṁbakaḥ svayam na śārdūlataḍāgastho vīkṣitaḥ somanāthakaḥ
'—I have never beheld with devotion, at Tripura, the three-linga Tryambaka himself; I have not seen Somanatha dwelling at Shardula-tadaga—'
Verse 36 (padma.6.192.36)
रेवापुरस्थितो देवो घुसृणेशो न वीक्षितः । नागदंतपुरे ख्यातो नागनाथो न वेक्षितः
revāpurasthito devo ghusṛṇeśo na vīkṣitaḥ nāgadaṁtapure khyāto nāganātho na vekṣitaḥ
'—I have not seen the god Ghusrineshvara dwelling at Revapura; nor Nagnatha, renowned in Nagadantapura—'
Verse 37 (padma.6.192.37)
पर्णग्रामस्थितो दृष्टो न महानमृतेश्वरः । न तुंगभद्रा तीरस्थो दृष्टो हरिहरः स्वयम्
parṇagrāmasthito dṛṣṭo na mahānamṛteśvaraḥ na tuṁgabhadrā tīrastho dṛṣṭo hariharaḥ svayam
'—I have not seen the great Amriteshvara dwelling at Parnagrama; nor Harihara himself, dwelling on the bank of the Tungabhadra—'
Verse 38 (padma.6.192.38)
न वेंकटाद्रिनिलयः श्रीनिवासः सुलक्षितः । कावेरी कर्णिकातीरे श्रीरंगो नैव वीक्षितः
na veṁkaṭādrinilayaḥ śrīnivāsaḥ sulakṣitaḥ kāverī karṇikātīre śrīraṁgo naiva vīkṣitaḥ
'—Shrinivasa, dwelling on the Venkata hill, I have never properly beheld; nor Shriranga on the bank of the Kaveri's Karnika—'
Verse 39 (padma.6.192.39)
दीनास्त्वनाथाः क्रोशंतः कारागारान्न मोचिताः । अन्नदानेन दौर्भिक्षे प्राणिनो नैव पूजिताः
dīnāstvanāthāḥ krośaṁtaḥ kārāgārānna mocitāḥ annadānena daurbhikṣe prāṇino naiva pūjitāḥ
'—I have never freed the wretched and the helpless, crying out, from prison; nor honored living beings with gifts of food in times of famine—'
Verse 40 (padma.6.192.40)
रात्रौ रात्रौ कृता क्वापिनिर्जले नोदकप्रभा
rātrau rātrau kṛtā kvāpinirjale nodakaprabhā
'—night after night, I have never set up a water-shelter anywhere in a waterless place—'
Verse 41 (padma.6.192.41)
न गौतम्यां कृतं स्नानं न दृष्टो हरिणेश्वरः । कृष्णवेण्यां च न कृतं स्नानं कन्यागते गुरौ
na gautamyāṁ kṛtaṁ snānaṁ na dṛṣṭo hariṇeśvaraḥ kṛṣṇaveṇyāṁ ca na kṛtaṁ snānaṁ kanyāgate gurau
'—I have not bathed in the Gautami, nor seen Harineshvara; nor bathed in the Krishnaveni when Jupiter entered Virgo—'
Verse 42 (padma.6.192.42)
दत्तं नो भूखंडमपि कवयो नैव पूजिताः । न तीर्थेषु कृतं सत्रं न ग्रामेषु कृता मखाः
dattaṁ no bhūkhaṁḍamapi kavayo naiva pūjitāḥ na tīrtheṣu kṛtaṁ satraṁ na grāmeṣu kṛtā makhāḥ
'—I have not even given a plot of land, nor honored poets; I have not held a sacrificial session at the tirthas, nor performed sacrifices in the villages—'
Verse 43 (padma.6.192.43)
पुष्करिण्यो न विहिता मध्ये मार्गं बहूदकाः । न प्रासादाः कृताः क्वापि ब्रह्मविष्णुपिनाकिनाम्
puṣkariṇyo na vihitā madhye mārgaṁ bahūdakāḥ na prāsādāḥ kṛtāḥ kvāpi brahmaviṣṇupinākinām
'—I have not built water-tanks full of water along the roads; nor built temples anywhere for Brahma, Vishnu, or Shiva—'
Verse 44 (padma.6.192.44)
न जातुचिद्भयाक्रांता रक्षिताः शरणागताः । कथमेकेन पुण्येन देवदत्तमिहार्जितम्
na jātucidbhayākrāṁtā rakṣitāḥ śaraṇāgatāḥ kathamekena puṇyena devadattamihārjitam
'—I have never protected those overcome with fear who sought my refuge. How then, by a single merit, has this one earned what is granted by the gods here?'
Verse 45 (padma.6.192.45)
इति चिंताकुलो भूत्वा हरिं प्रष्टुं पुरंदरः । ययौ सरभसंखिन्नः क्षीरकूपारगह्वरम्
iti ciṁtākulo bhūtvā hariṁ praṣṭuṁ puraṁdaraḥ yayau sarabhasaṁkhinnaḥ kṣīrakūpāragahvaram
Thus, filled with anxiety, Purandara, eager yet distressed, went to the depths of the ocean of milk to question Hari.
Verse 46 (padma.6.192.46)
तत्र प्रविश्य गोविंदं कृतनिद्रं नवैस्तवैः । अकस्मान्निजसाम्राज्यभ्रंशदुःखमुवाच ह
tatra praviśya goviṁdaṁ kṛtanidraṁ navaistavaiḥ akasmānnijasāmrājyabhraṁśaduḥkhamuvāca ha
Entering there, going to Govinda, who was asleep, lulled by fresh hymns of praise, he told him of the sudden sorrow of the loss of his sovereignty.
Verse 47 (padma.6.192.47)
इंद्र उवाच-। रमाकांत भवत्प्रीत्यै कृतं क्रतुशतं पुरा । तेन पुण्येन संप्राप्तं मया पौरंदरं पदम्
iṁdra uvāca- ramākāṁta bhavatprītyai kṛtaṁ kratuśataṁ purā tena puṇyena saṁprāptaṁ mayā pauraṁdaraṁ padam
Indra said: 'O beloved of Rama, I once performed a hundred sacrifices for your pleasure; by that merit I attained the office of Indra.'
Verse 48 (padma.6.192.48)
इदानीं नूतनः कोऽपि जातो दिवि पुरंदरः । न तेन धर्मो विहितो न तेन क्रतवः कृताः
idānīṁ nūtanaḥ ko'pi jāto divi puraṁdaraḥ na tena dharmo vihito na tena kratavaḥ kṛtāḥ
'Now some new Indra has arisen in heaven; he performed no such dharma, he made no such sacrifices—'
Verse 49 (padma.6.192.49)
मम सिंहासनं दिव्यं कथमाक्रांतमच्युत
mama siṁhāsanaṁ divyaṁ kathamākrāṁtamacyuta
'—how then, O Achyuta, has my divine throne been seized?'
Verse 50 (padma.6.192.50)
महादेव उवाच-। इत्येवं वदतस्तस्य श्रुत्वा वाचं रमापतिः । उन्मीलितस्मिताक्षो सावुवाच मधुरं वचः
mahādeva uvāca- ityevaṁ vadatastasya śrutvā vācaṁ ramāpatiḥ unmīlitasmitākṣo sāvuvāca madhuraṁ vacaḥ
Mahadeva said: Hearing him speak thus, the Lord of Rama, opening his smiling eyes, spoke sweet words:
Verse 51 (padma.6.192.51)
श्रीभगवानुवाच-। किं दानैरल्पफलदैः किं तपोभिः किमध्वरैः । वर्त्तमानः क्षितितले सत्वं प्रीणितवान्पुरा
śrībhagavānuvāca- kiṁ dānairalpaphaladaiḥ kiṁ tapobhiḥ kimadhvaraiḥ varttamānaḥ kṣititale satvaṁ prīṇitavānpurā
The Blessed Lord said: 'What use are gifts that bear little fruit, what use austerities, what use sacrifices? A being, while dwelling on the surface of the earth, once pleased me—'
Verse 52 (padma.6.192.52)
इन्द्र उवाच-। भगवन्कर्मणा केन स त्वां प्रीणितवान्द्विजः । यत्प्रीत्या भगवान्प्रादात्तस्मै पौरंदरं पदम्
indra uvāca- bhagavankarmaṇā kena sa tvāṁ prīṇitavāndvijaḥ yatprītyā bhagavānprādāttasmai pauraṁdaraṁ padam
Indra said: 'O Lord, by what deed did that brahmin please you, that you, pleased, granted him the office of Indra?'
Verse 53 (padma.6.192.53)
श्रीभगवानुवाच । जपत्यष्टादशाध्याये गीतानां श्लोकपंचकम् । यत्पुण्येन च संप्राप्तं तव साम्राज्यमुत्तमम्
śrībhagavānuvāca japatyaṣṭādaśādhyāye gītānāṁ ślokapaṁcakam yatpuṇyena ca saṁprāptaṁ tava sāmrājyamuttamam
The Blessed Lord said: 'He recites five verses from the eighteenth chapter of the Gita; by that very merit has he attained your excellent sovereignty.'
Verse 54 (padma.6.192.54)
सर्वपुण्यशिरोरत्न भूतेन त्वं स्थिरो भव । इति विष्णोर्वचः श्रुत्वा ज्ञातोपायं पुरंदरः
sarvapuṇyaśiroratna bhūtena tvaṁ sthiro bhava iti viṣṇorvacaḥ śrutvā jñātopāyaṁ puraṁdaraḥ
'Be steadfast, you who yourself became the crest-jewel of all merit.' Hearing these words of Vishnu, Purandara, having learned the remedy—
Verse 55 (padma.6.192.55)
विप्रवेषधरो भूत्वा गतो गोदावरीतटम् । तत्रापश्यत्पुरं पुण्यं कालिकाग्राममुत्तमम्
vipraveṣadharo bhūtvā gato godāvarītaṭam tatrāpaśyatpuraṁ puṇyaṁ kālikāgrāmamuttamam
—taking the guise of a brahmin, went to the bank of the Godavari; there he saw the sacred and excellent city named Kalikagrama—
Verse 56 (padma.6.192.56)
यत्र कालेश्वरो देवो वर्त्तते कालमर्दनः । तत्र गोदावरी तीरे स्थितं परमधार्मिकम्
yatra kāleśvaro devo varttate kālamardanaḥ tatra godāvarī tīre sthitaṁ paramadhārmikam
—where the god Kaleshvara, subduer of Time, dwells. There, on the bank of the Godavari, he saw a most righteous—
Verse 57 (padma.6.192.57)
अपश्यत्करुणावंतं ब्राह्मणं वेदपारगम् । नित्यमष्टादशाध्यायं जपंतं दांतचेतसम्
apaśyatkaruṇāvaṁtaṁ brāhmaṇaṁ vedapāragam nityamaṣṭādaśādhyāyaṁ japaṁtaṁ dāṁtacetasam
—compassionate brahmin, versed in the Vedas, of subdued mind, constantly reciting the eighteenth chapter.
Verse 58 (padma.6.192.58)
ततस्तच्चरणद्वंद्वे लुठित्वा परया मुदा । सत्वमष्टादशाध्यायमपठत्तेन शिक्षितम्
tatastaccaraṇadvaṁdve luṭhitvā parayā mudā satvamaṣṭādaśādhyāyamapaṭhattena śikṣitam
Then, rolling at his two feet with the greatest joy, that being too learned and recited the eighteenth chapter, taught by him.
Verse 59 (padma.6.192.59)
अथ पुण्येन तेनाऽसौ विष्णोः सायुज्यमाययौ । हित्वा पुरंदरादीनां देवानां पदमल्पकम्
atha puṇyena tenā'sau viṣṇoḥ sāyujyamāyayau hitvā puraṁdarādīnāṁ devānāṁ padamalpakam
Then, by that merit, he attained union with Vishnu, abandoning the lesser rank of the gods beginning with Indra.
Verse 60 (padma.6.192.60)
ज्ञात्वातीव मुदायुक्तो वैकुंठमगमत्पुरम् । अतएव परं तत्वं मुनीनामिदमुत्तमम्
jñātvātīva mudāyukto vaikuṁṭhamagamatpuram ataeva paraṁ tatvaṁ munīnāmidamuttamam
Understanding this, filled with great joy, he went to the city of Vaikuntha. Therefore this is the supreme truth, the highest even for sages—
Verse 61 (padma.6.192.61)
दिव्यमष्टादशाध्यायमाहात्म्यं कथितं मया । यस्य श्रवणमात्रेण सर्वपापैः प्रमुच्यते
divyamaṣṭādaśādhyāyamāhātmyaṁ kathitaṁ mayā yasya śravaṇamātreṇa sarvapāpaiḥ pramucyate
—I have told you the divine glory of the eighteenth chapter, merely by hearing which one is freed from all sins.
Verse 62 (padma.6.192.62)
इत्येवं गीतामाहात्म्यं कथितं पापनाशनम् । पुण्यं पवित्रमायुष्यं स्वर्ग्यं स्वस्त्ययनं महत्
ityevaṁ gītāmāhātmyaṁ kathitaṁ pāpanāśanam puṇyaṁ pavitramāyuṣyaṁ svargyaṁ svastyayanaṁ mahat
Thus has the glory of the Gita been told — sin-destroying, meritorious, purifying, life-giving, heaven-bestowing, and a great blessing.
Verse 63 (padma.6.192.63)
यः शृणोति महाभागे श्रद्धया संयुतः पुमान् । सर्वयज्ञफलं प्राप्य विष्णोः सायुज्यमाप्नुयात्
yaḥ śṛṇoti mahābhāge śraddhayā saṁyutaḥ pumān sarvayajñaphalaṁ prāpya viṣṇoḥ sāyujyamāpnuyāt
Whoever hears it, O greatly fortunate one, endowed with faith, shall obtain the fruit of all sacrifices and attain union with Vishnu.
