The Fate of Chandaka the Barber
Verse 1 (padma.6.211.1)
नारद उवाच- शिवे तवपुरः सर्वं मुकंदाख्यानमुत्तमम् । कथितं चंडकस्यापि नापितस्य शृणुष्व मे
nārada uvāca- śive tavapuraḥ sarvaṁ mukaṁdākhyānamuttamam kathitaṁ caṁḍakasyāpi nāpitasya śṛṇuṣva me
Narada said: 'O Shiva, before you I have told the whole excellent tale of Mukunda; now hear from me of Chandaka the barber as well.'
Verse 2 (padma.6.211.2)
यस्मिन्दिने मुकुंदस्तु ब्राह्मणस्तेन घातितः । चंडकेन तदा राजंस्तद्वृत्तं नागरैः श्रुतम्
yasmindine mukuṁdastu brāhmaṇastena ghātitaḥ caṁḍakena tadā rājaṁstadvṛttaṁ nāgaraiḥ śrutam
'O king, on the very day that the brahmin Mukunda was slain by Chandaka, that event was heard by the townspeople.'
Verse 3 (padma.6.211.3)
श्रुत्वा तैस्तन्नृपस्याग्रे निवेदितमिति स्फुटम् । नागरा ऊचुः । चंडकेन हतो राजन्मुकुंदो ब्राह्मणोत्तमः
śrutvā taistannṛpasyāgre niveditamiti sphuṭam nāgarā ūcuḥ caṁḍakena hato rājanmukuṁdo brāhmaṇottamaḥ
'Hearing it, they clearly reported it before the king. The townspeople said: "O king, Mukunda, foremost of brahmins, has been slain by Chandaka—"'
Verse 4 (padma.6.211.4)
नीतं च तद्धनं भूरि यद्युक्तं तद्विधीयताम् । त्वमस्माकं प्रजानां हि रक्षकः शासकोऽसताम्
nītaṁ ca taddhanaṁ bhūri yadyuktaṁ tadvidhīyatām tvamasmākaṁ prajānāṁ hi rakṣakaḥ śāsako'satām
'"—and much of his wealth has been carried off. Do whatever is fitting; for you are the protector of us, your subjects, and the chastiser of the wicked."'
Verse 5 (padma.6.211.5)
नारद उवाच- इत्याकर्ण्य स भूपालो मंत्रिणं पार्श्ववर्तिनम् । उवाच कोपरक्ताक्षः किमेभिः कथ्यते शृणु
nārada uvāca- ityākarṇya sa bhūpālo maṁtriṇaṁ pārśvavartinam uvāca koparaktākṣaḥ kimebhiḥ kathyate śṛṇu
Narada said: 'Hearing this, that king, his eyes red with rage, said to his minister standing at his side: "Listen — what is it that these people are saying?"'
Verse 6 (padma.6.211.6)
शीघ्रमानयतं पापं नोचेत्त्वां घातयाम्यहम् । उत्तिष्ठोत्तिष्ठ पापिष्ठ साधूनां शं विधीयताम्
śīghramānayataṁ pāpaṁ nocettvāṁ ghātayāmyaham uttiṣṭhottiṣṭha pāpiṣṭha sādhūnāṁ śaṁ vidhīyatām
'"Bring that sinner here at once, or I shall have you killed. Rise, rise, most wicked one — let well-being be secured for the virtuous."'
Verse 7 (padma.6.211.7)
पीड्यंते विषये यस्य प्रजा दस्युभिरुल्बणैः । स नृपो नरकं याति तेभ्यस्ताश्चेन्न रक्षति
pīḍyaṁte viṣaye yasya prajā dasyubhirulbaṇaiḥ sa nṛpo narakaṁ yāti tebhyastāścenna rakṣati
'"That king in whose realm the people are oppressed by fierce robbers goes to hell, if he does not protect them from such men."'
Verse 8 (padma.6.211.8)
नारद उवाच- निशम्येति वचो राज्ञः सचिवः स शिवे नृपः । वेगेन हयमारुह्य पदातिशतसंयुतः
nārada uvāca- niśamyeti vaco rājñaḥ sacivaḥ sa śive nṛpaḥ vegena hayamāruhya padātiśatasaṁyutaḥ
Narada said: 'O Shiva, having heard this word of the king, that minister, mounting swiftly upon a horse, accompanied by a hundred foot-soldiers—'
Verse 9 (padma.6.211.9)
ययौ गृहे मुकुंदस्य तस्य बंधूनपृच्छत । मुकुंदः केन निहतः सत्यं ब्रूत ममाग्रतः
yayau gṛhe mukuṁdasya tasya baṁdhūnapṛcchata mukuṁdaḥ kena nihataḥ satyaṁ brūta mamāgrataḥ
'—went to Mukunda's house and questioned his kinsmen: "By whom was Mukunda slain? Tell me the truth before me."'
Verse 10 (padma.6.211.10)
तं पापं निहनिष्यामि शासनाद्भूपतेरहम् । नारद उवाच- श्रुत्वेति मंत्रिणो वाक्यं प्रत्यूचुर्विप्रबांधवाः
taṁ pāpaṁ nihaniṣyāmi śāsanādbhūpateraham nārada uvāca- śrutveti maṁtriṇo vākyaṁ pratyūcurviprabāṁdhavāḥ
'"I shall have that sinner put to death, by the king's own command."' Narada said: 'Hearing this word of the minister, the brahmin's kinsmen replied.'
Verse 11 (padma.6.211.11)
विप्रबांधवा ऊचुः - चंडकेन हतो मंत्रिन्मुकुंदो नापितेन हि । इदं पलायमानस्य तस्योष्णीषं पपात वै
viprabāṁdhavā ūcuḥ - caṁḍakena hato maṁtrinmukuṁdo nāpitena hi idaṁ palāyamānasya tasyoṣṇīṣaṁ papāta vai
The brahmin's kinsmen said: 'O minister, Mukunda was indeed slain by the barber Chandaka; this turban of his fell as he fled.'
Verse 12 (padma.6.211.12)
दृष्टः स्वचक्षुषा वध्वा मुकुंदस्यैव सोघकृत् । किं कुर्मस्तेन पापेन मज्जिताः शोकसागरे
dṛṣṭaḥ svacakṣuṣā vadhvā mukuṁdasyaiva soghakṛt kiṁ kurmastena pāpena majjitāḥ śokasāgare
'He was seen with her own eyes by Mukunda's daughter-in-law, that doer of this evil deed. What are we to do — plunged as we are into an ocean of grief because of that sinner?'
Verse 13 (padma.6.211.13)
नारद उवाच - इत्याकर्ण्य वचस्तेषां बंधूनां ब्राह्मणस्य हि । स मंत्री तस्य पापस्य नापितस्य गृहं ययौ
nārada uvāca - ityākarṇya vacasteṣāṁ baṁdhūnāṁ brāhmaṇasya hi sa maṁtrī tasya pāpasya nāpitasya gṛhaṁ yayau
Narada said: 'Hearing these words of the brahmin's kinsmen, that minister went to the house of that sinful barber.'
Verse 14 (padma.6.211.14)
अश्वादुत्तीर्य तरसा तद्गृहं स्वयमाविशत् । कतिभिः पत्तिभिः सार्द्धं शयानं च ददर्श ह
aśvāduttīrya tarasā tadgṛhaṁ svayamāviśat katibhiḥ pattibhiḥ sārddhaṁ śayānaṁ ca dadarśa ha
'Dismounting swiftly from his horse, he himself entered that house with a few foot-soldiers, and saw him lying asleep.'
Verse 15 (padma.6.211.15)
पत्तयस्तु तदाज्ञप्ताः केशेष्वाकृष्य तत्क्षणात् । तल्पादुत्थापयामासुस्तं पापं नापिताधमम्
pattayastu tadājñaptāḥ keśeṣvākṛṣya tatkṣaṇāt talpādutthāpayāmāsustaṁ pāpaṁ nāpitādhamam
'The soldiers, commanded by him, at once seized that sinful, vilest of barbers by the hair and raised him up from his bed.'
Verse 16 (padma.6.211.16)
किं किमित्येव संजल्पन्नेत्रे उन्मीलयत्यसौ । यावत्स नापितः पापस्तावत्तं ददृशे पुरः
kiṁ kimityeva saṁjalpannetre unmīlayatyasau yāvatsa nāpitaḥ pāpastāvattaṁ dadṛśe puraḥ
'Muttering only "What, what is it?", he opened his eyes; and as soon as that sinful barber did so, he saw him standing before him.'
Verse 17 (padma.6.211.17)
संस्मरंतं निजं कर्म रात्रौ यत्कृतवानघम् । अधोमुखः क्षणं तस्थौ पश्यन्मूर्ध्नि स्थितं यमम्
saṁsmaraṁtaṁ nijaṁ karma rātrau yatkṛtavānagham adhomukhaḥ kṣaṇaṁ tasthau paśyanmūrdhni sthitaṁ yamam
'Remembering his own sinful deed done in the night, he stood for a moment, his face bowed down, seeing Yama, as it were, standing over his head.'
Verse 18 (padma.6.211.18)
ग्राहयित्वा च सचिवस्तं पापं च स्वपत्तिभिः । निनाय नृपतेः पार्श्वमिति चोवाच भूपतिम्
grāhayitvā ca sacivastaṁ pāpaṁ ca svapattibhiḥ nināya nṛpateḥ pārśvamiti covāca bhūpatim
'The minister, having had that sinner seized by his own soldiers, brought him before the king, and spoke thus to the ruler.'
Verse 19 (padma.6.211.19)
आनीतो ब्रह्महा राजन्नयं चंडक नापितः । यदाज्ञापयसि स्वामिंस्तरसा तत्करोम्यहम्
ānīto brahmahā rājannayaṁ caṁḍaka nāpitaḥ yadājñāpayasi svāmiṁstarasā tatkaromyaham
'"O king, this barber Chandaka, guilty of a brahmin's murder, has been brought here. Whatever you command, my lord, I shall carry out at once."'
Verse 20 (padma.6.211.20)
राजोवाच- धर्मज्ञ सचिवश्रेष्ठ शृणु त्वं वचनं मम । इयं सरिद्वरा युष्मंश्चंद्रभागात्र निर्मलाः
rājovāca- dharmajña sacivaśreṣṭha śṛṇu tvaṁ vacanaṁ mama iyaṁ saridvarā yuṣmaṁścaṁdrabhāgātra nirmalāḥ
The king said: 'O foremost of ministers, knower of dharma, hear my word. This excellent river of yours here, the pure Chandrabhaga—'
Verse 21 (padma.6.211.21)
त्यजंति येऽत्र वै प्राणाल्लँभंते ते सुरास्पदम् । अत एष न हंतव्यः पापात्मा ह्यत्र नापितः
tyajaṁti ye'tra vai prāṇālla~bhaṁte te surāspadam ata eṣa na haṁtavyaḥ pāpātmā hyatra nāpitaḥ
'—those who give up their life here obtain the abode of the gods. Therefore this sinful-souled barber must not be slain here.'
Verse 22 (padma.6.211.22)
पंचकोशांतरे ह्यस्या मर्यादाया बहिर्यदि । नरकान्दारुणान्ह्येष ब्रह्महा यातु मा चिरम्
paṁcakośāṁtare hyasyā maryādāyā bahiryadi narakāndāruṇānhyeṣa brahmahā yātu mā ciram
'If taken beyond the boundary, outside a radius of five koshas from it, then let this slayer of a brahmin go to the terrible hells — without delay.'
Verse 23 (padma.6.211.23)
नारदोवाच- इत्युक्तस्तेन वै राज्ञा स राजन्मंत्रिसत्तमः । श्वपचान्प्रेरयामास हंतुं तं भूपशासनात्
nāradovāca- ityuktastena vai rājñā sa rājanmaṁtrisattamaḥ śvapacānprerayāmāsa haṁtuṁ taṁ bhūpaśāsanāt
Narada said: 'O king, thus commanded by that king, that most excellent minister sent outcastes to slay him, by the king's own order.'
Verse 24 (padma.6.211.24)
श्वपचास्ते तमुन्नीय चंद्रभागापरे तटे । योजनद्वयभूभागं चिच्छिदुस्तस्य मस्तकम्
śvapacāste tamunnīya caṁdrabhāgāpare taṭe yojanadvayabhūbhāgaṁ cicchidustasya mastakam
'Those outcastes, taking him to the far bank of the Chandrabhaga, two yojanas of ground away, cut off his head.'
Verse 25 (padma.6.211.25)
स पापो मारवे देशे सर्पोऽभूत्कालविग्रहः । धवकोटरमध्यस्थो विषज्वालाकराननः
sa pāpo mārave deśe sarpo'bhūtkālavigrahaḥ dhavakoṭaramadhyastho viṣajvālākarānanaḥ
'That sinner became a serpent in the desert land, its body like death itself, dwelling within the hollow of a dhava tree, its mouth breathing flames of poison.'
Verse 26 (padma.6.211.26)
स शुष्को धववृक्षस्तु तस्य फूत्कारवह्निना । तथा तपनतापेन सरसोऽपि यथा ह्रदः
sa śuṣko dhavavṛkṣastu tasya phūtkāravahninā tathā tapanatāpena saraso'pi yathā hradaḥ
'That dhava tree withered from the fire of its hissing breath, just as even a full lake dries up from the heat of the sun.'
Verse 27 (padma.6.211.27)
गमनात्तस्य पापस्य सर्वतो वृक्षमूषरम् । उच्छिद्य तृणजातादि जातं पश्वहितं तदा
gamanāttasya pāpasya sarvato vṛkṣamūṣaram ucchidya tṛṇajātādi jātaṁ paśvahitaṁ tadā
'Wherever that sinner went, the ground all around, once wooded, became barren waste, its grasses and the like destroyed, harmful thereafter even for cattle.'
Verse 28 (padma.6.211.28)
तत्र जातु समायातः सार्थो दक्षिणदेशतः । नारायणाश्रमं गच्छन्बदर्याख्यं शिवे नृप
tatra jātu samāyātaḥ sārtho dakṣiṇadeśataḥ nārāyaṇāśramaṁ gacchanbadaryākhyaṁ śive nṛpa
'O Shiva, O king, there, once, a caravan arrived from the southern country, on its way to Narayana's hermitage called Badari.'
Verse 29 (padma.6.211.29)
तत्रैको ब्राह्मणः कश्चित्सार्थेसंमीलितः पथि । निश्छिद्रां काष्ठमंजूषां पितृमात्रस्थिसंयुताम्
tatraiko brāhmaṇaḥ kaścitsārthesaṁmīlitaḥ pathi niśchidrāṁ kāṣṭhamaṁjūṣāṁ pitṛmātrasthisaṁyutām
'Among them was a certain brahmin, joined to the caravan on the road, carrying a sealed wooden box containing the bones of his father and mother—'
Verse 30 (padma.6.211.30)
स्कंधेन धारयन्याति तानि पातयितुं नृप । गंगांभसि महाभाग पापिनामपि कामदे
skaṁdhena dhārayanyāti tāni pātayituṁ nṛpa gaṁgāṁbhasi mahābhāga pāpināmapi kāmade
'—bearing it on his shoulder as he went, O king, O most fortunate one, to cast them into the water of the Ganga, granter of desires even to sinners.'
Verse 31 (padma.6.211.31)
सोऽप्यागतस्तत्र वने यत्रास्ति स भुजंगमः । विविक्ते क्षिप्य मंजूषां शलाकालोहनिर्मिताम्
so'pyāgatastatra vane yatrāsti sa bhujaṁgamaḥ vivikte kṣipya maṁjūṣāṁ śalākālohanirmitām
'He too came to that forest where that serpent dwelt, and, in a lonely spot, set down the box, whose bolt was made of iron.'
Verse 32 (padma.6.211.32)
अथागत्य भुजंगोऽसौ शलाकां फणयाघटत् । किंचिदुद्धाटितायां स मंजूषायां समाविशत्
athāgatya bhujaṁgo'sau śalākāṁ phaṇayāghaṭat kiṁciduddhāṭitāyāṁ sa maṁjūṣāyāṁ samāviśat
'Then that serpent came and struck the bolt with its hood; the box having been opened slightly, it slipped inside.'
Verse 33 (padma.6.211.33)
पुनः शलाका स्वंस्थानमागताथ स कुंडली । तत्रैव तस्थौ निश्चेष्टो मंजूषायां विषोल्बणः
punaḥ śalākā svaṁsthānamāgatātha sa kuṁḍalī tatraiva tasthau niśceṣṭo maṁjūṣāyāṁ viṣolbaṇaḥ
'The bolt then returned to its own place, and that coiled, venom-fierce serpent remained there motionless, inside the box.'
Verse 34 (padma.6.211.34)
अथ प्रभाते सर्वे ते चेलुः स्थानात्ततो नृप । ब्राह्मणः सोऽपि मंजूषां कंबलेन समावृताम्
atha prabhāte sarve te celuḥ sthānāttato nṛpa brāhmaṇaḥ so'pi maṁjūṣāṁ kaṁbalena samāvṛtām
'Then, at dawn, O king, all of them set out from that place; and that brahmin too, having covered the box with a blanket—'
Verse 35 (padma.6.211.35)
कृत्वा शिरसि राजेंद्र चचाल प्रति जाह्नवीम् । कतिभिर्वासरैः सार्थः संप्राप्तस्तीर्थगामिनाम्
kṛtvā śirasi rājeṁdra cacāla prati jāhnavīm katibhirvāsaraiḥ sārthaḥ saṁprāptastīrthagāminām
'—O king of kings, placed it on his head and set off toward the Jahnavi; after some days the caravan of pilgrims arrived—'
Verse 36 (padma.6.211.36)
इहैव कोशलायां वै पुनीतायां महीपते । अथ शीतातुरो विप्रः कंबलं चोदघाटयत्
ihaiva kośalāyāṁ vai punītāyāṁ mahīpate atha śītāturo vipraḥ kaṁbalaṁ codaghāṭayat
'—right here, O ruler of the earth, at this very pure Kosala; then, troubled by the cold, the brahmin opened the blanket—'
Verse 37 (padma.6.211.37)
मंजूषावरणं राजन्तत्रायोध्यातटे शुभे । सोऽपि सर्पो निराहारो लब्ध्वा मारुतभोजनम्
maṁjūṣāvaraṇaṁ rājantatrāyodhyātaṭe śubhe so'pi sarpo nirāhāro labdhvā mārutabhojanam
'—the covering of the box, O king, there on the auspicious bank near Ayodhya's region; and that serpent too, having gone without food, now feeding on the mere air—'
Verse 38 (padma.6.211.38)
निश्चक्राम बहिस्तस्मादुत्क्षेप्य सुशलाकिकाम् । तं निःसृतं समालोक्य सर्प्प सर्प इति क्रुधा
niścakrāma bahistasmādutkṣepya suśalākikām taṁ niḥsṛtaṁ samālokya sarppa sarpa iti krudhā
'—pushed up the neat little bolt and came out from it. Seeing it emerge, the people, in anger, crying "A snake, a snake!"—'
Verse 39 (padma.6.211.39)
व्याहरंतो जनाः सर्वे लोष्टहस्ताः समभ्ययुः । यावत्पलायते सर्पस्तावदेकेन घातितः
vyāharaṁto janāḥ sarve loṣṭahastāḥ samabhyayuḥ yāvatpalāyate sarpastāvadekena ghātitaḥ
'—all the people, clods of earth in hand, rushed at it; and even as the serpent tried to flee, it was struck down by one of them.'
Verse 40 (padma.6.211.40)
तत्याज स तदा प्राणान्पश्यतां तीर्थगामिनाम् । त्यक्त्वा भुजंगदेहं स देवत्वं प्राप दुर्लभम्
tatyāja sa tadā prāṇānpaśyatāṁ tīrthagāminām tyaktvā bhujaṁgadehaṁ sa devatvaṁ prāpa durlabham
'It then gave up its life before the very eyes of the pilgrims; and, casting off its serpent body, it attained a rare and difficult godhood.'
Verse 41 (padma.6.211.41)
दिव्यं विमानमारुह्य प्रोवाचेदं जनानि ह । सर्प उवाच- भो दाक्षिणात्याः शृणुत ब्राह्मणा वचनं मम
divyaṁ vimānamāruhya provācedaṁ janāni ha sarpa uvāca- bho dākṣiṇātyāḥ śṛṇuta brāhmaṇā vacanaṁ mama
'Mounting a divine chariot, it spoke thus to the people. The serpent said: "O brahmins of the southern land, hear my words."'
Verse 42 (padma.6.211.42)
पुरा चंडकनामाहं नापितो ब्रह्महाधमः । ब्रह्महत्याप्रदोषेण सर्पआसं मरुस्थले
purā caṁḍakanāmāhaṁ nāpito brahmahādhamaḥ brahmahatyāpradoṣeṇa sarpaāsaṁ marusthale
'"Formerly I was a barber named Chandaka, the vilest slayer of a brahmin; by the taint of that brahmin-murder, I became a serpent in the desert land."'
Verse 43 (padma.6.211.43)
भुक्त्वा नरकदुःखानि वर्षाणां लक्षपंचकम् । अतीतं सर्पयोनौ मे वर्षाणामयुतद्वयम्
bhuktvā narakaduḥkhāni varṣāṇāṁ lakṣapaṁcakam atītaṁ sarpayonau me varṣāṇāmayutadvayam
'"Having suffered the sufferings of hell for five hundred thousand years, twenty thousand years then passed for me in the womb of a serpent."'
Verse 44 (padma.6.211.44)
तीर्थस्यास्य प्रसादेन प्राप्तं देवत्वमुत्तमम् । तस्मादिदं न वै त्याज्यं तीर्थं वै कोशलाभिधम् । सर्वार्थदं यतो नाकः प्राप्तः पापीयसा मया
tīrthasyāsya prasādena prāptaṁ devatvamuttamam tasmādidaṁ na vai tyājyaṁ tīrthaṁ vai kośalābhidham sarvārthadaṁ yato nākaḥ prāptaḥ pāpīyasā mayā
'"By the grace of this tirtha, I have obtained the supreme state of a god; therefore this tirtha named Kosala, granter of every end, must never be abandoned — for even by one as sinful as I, heaven has been attained here."'
Verse 45 (padma.6.211.45)
नारद उवाच- एवं स नापितः पापो योनिं प्राप्य विनिंदिताम् । जगाम द्यां विमानस्थस्तीर्थस्यास्य प्रसादतः
nārada uvāca- evaṁ sa nāpitaḥ pāpo yoniṁ prāpya viniṁditām jagāma dyāṁ vimānasthastīrthasyāsya prasādataḥ
Narada said: 'Thus that sinful barber, having attained a despised birth, went to heaven, mounted upon a celestial chariot, by the grace of this tirtha.'
Verse 46 (padma.6.211.46)
ते दाक्षिणात्या यतयो भूत्वा तत्रैव तीर्थके । ऊषुर्गोविंदपादाब्ज मानसा दृष्टवैभवे
te dākṣiṇātyā yatayo bhūtvā tatraiva tīrthake ūṣurgoviṁdapādābja mānasā dṛṣṭavaibhave
'Those southern pilgrims, having become ascetics, having witnessed its majesty, dwelt right there at that tirtha, their minds fixed upon the lotus feet of Govinda.'
Verse 47 (padma.6.211.47)
माहात्म्यमस्य तीर्थस्य दृष्ट्वा स ब्राह्मणोत्तमः । तीर्थेऽत्रजातविश्रद्धः पित्रोरस्थीनि सोऽक्षिपत्
māhātmyamasya tīrthasya dṛṣṭvā sa brāhmaṇottamaḥ tīrthe'trajātaviśraddhaḥ pitrorasthīni so'kṣipat
'Having witnessed the glory of this tirtha, that foremost brahmin, his faith now awakened toward it, cast the bones of his own father and mother into it.'
Verse 48 (padma.6.211.48)
पतितेष्वस्थिखंडेषु पितरौ तस्य तत्क्षणात् । विमानवरमारूढौ दिव्यौ तत्र समागतौ
patiteṣvasthikhaṁḍeṣu pitarau tasya tatkṣaṇāt vimānavaramārūḍhau divyau tatra samāgatau
'The moment those fragments of bone fell, his father and mother, both now divine, arrived there at once, mounted on a fine celestial chariot.'
Verse 49 (padma.6.211.49)
ऊचतुश्च स्वतनयं शृण्वानेषु जनेषु वै । वत्स जीव चिरं लोके धनधान्यसुखी भव
ūcatuśca svatanayaṁ śṛṇvāneṣu janeṣu vai vatsa jīva ciraṁ loke dhanadhānyasukhī bhava
'And they said to their own son, in the hearing of the people: "Child, live long in this world; be happy, blessed with wealth and grain—"'
Verse 50 (padma.6.211.50)
आवयोर्मुक्तिदानाच्च मुक्तिं यास्यसि नो मृषा । गंगायां पिंडदानेन यत्फलं स्यात्सुतस्य वै । पितॄणां या गतिश्चात्र द्वयं स्यादस्थिपाततः
āvayormuktidānācca muktiṁ yāsyasi no mṛṣā gaṁgāyāṁ piṁḍadānena yatphalaṁ syātsutasya vai pitṝṇāṁ yā gatiścātra dvayaṁ syādasthipātataḥ
'"—and by our own gift of liberation to you, you too shall attain liberation, not in vain. Whatever fruit belongs to a son from offering the pinda in the Ganga, and whatever destiny belongs here to the ancestors — both, at once, come from the mere falling of bones into this tirtha."'
