The Glory of Madhuvana
Verse 1 (padma.6.214.1)
नारद उवाच- इत्याकर्ण्य पितुर्वाक्यं स जगाम त्वरान्वितः । पुण्यं मधुवनं राजन्गयाशतगुणाधिकम्
nārada uvāca- ityākarṇya piturvākyaṁ sa jagāma tvarānvitaḥ puṇyaṁ madhuvanaṁ rājangayāśataguṇādhikam
Narada said: 'Hearing his father's words, he went in haste, O king, to sacred Madhuvana, a hundredfold greater than Gaya.'
Verse 2 (padma.6.214.2)
तत्तीर्थवासिनो विप्रान्सायमामंत्र्य मंत्रवित् । काले पुनः समाहूय बभाषे स्वागतं वचः
tattīrthavāsino viprānsāyamāmaṁtrya maṁtravit kāle punaḥ samāhūya babhāṣe svāgataṁ vacaḥ
'That knower of mantras, having invited in the evening the brahmins dwelling at that tirtha, summoned them again at the proper time, and spoke words of welcome.'
Verse 3 (padma.6.214.3)
ततः प्रक्षाल्य तत्पादौ गंधाद्यैरभिपूज्य च । पादार्घ्यमददात्प्रीत्या समेन स्वयमाचमत्
tataḥ prakṣālya tatpādau gaṁdhādyairabhipūjya ca pādārghyamadadātprītyā samena svayamācamat
'Then, having washed their feet, and having honored them with sandal-paste and the rest, he lovingly offered the foot-water and argha, and himself sipped water in the same manner.'
Verse 4 (padma.6.214.4)
ततस्तान्ब्राह्मणान्नीत्वा श्राद्धदेशे न्यवेशयत् । कुशांबु तुलसीपुष्प गंधाक्षत तिलैः सह
tatastānbrāhmaṇānnītvā śrāddhadeśe nyaveśayat kuśāṁbu tulasīpuṣpa gaṁdhākṣata tilaiḥ saha
'Then, leading those brahmins, he seated them in the place set for the shraddha, with kusha-grass, water, tulasi flowers, sandal-paste, unbroken rice, and sesame at hand.'
Verse 5 (padma.6.214.5)
पूरयित्वा कर्मपात्रं पुंडरीकाक्षमस्मरत् । देवताभ्य इति श्लोकं त्रिःकृत्वा सोऽपठद्द्विजः
pūrayitvā karmapātraṁ puṁḍarīkākṣamasmarat devatābhya iti ślokaṁ triḥkṛtvā so'paṭhaddvijaḥ
'Having filled the ritual vessel, he called to mind the lotus-eyed one; and that brahmin recited the verse beginning "To the gods—" three times.'
Verse 6 (padma.6.214.6)
सतिलं शोधितकुशैर्विदधे बंधनं ततः । अग्निष्वात्तेति मंत्रेण पूर्वादीनां दिशां क्रमात्
satilaṁ śodhitakuśairvidadhe baṁdhanaṁ tataḥ agniṣvātteti maṁtreṇa pūrvādīnāṁ diśāṁ kramāt
'Then, with purified kusha-grass, together with sesame, he tied the sacred knot; with the mantra "Agnishvatta," in due order of the eastern and other directions—'
Verse 7 (padma.6.214.7)
रक्षोभूतेति मंत्रेण नीवीबंधं व्यधाच्च सः । ततः प्रतिज्ञामाधाय ददौ द्विजकुशासनम्
rakṣobhūteti maṁtreṇa nīvībaṁdhaṁ vyadhācca saḥ tataḥ pratijñāmādhāya dadau dvijakuśāsanam
'—and with the mantra "Rakshobhuta," he tied the protective knot; then, having made his vow of intent, he gave the brahmins seats of kusha-grass.'
Verse 8 (padma.6.214.8)
पितॄन्समाह्वयामास स तदा ब्राह्मणोत्तमः । दत्त्वा ततस्तु हस्तार्घ्यं पात्रं न्युब्जीचकार वै
pitṝnsamāhvayāmāsa sa tadā brāhmaṇottamaḥ dattvā tatastu hastārghyaṁ pātraṁ nyubjīcakāra vai
'That foremost of brahmins then invoked the ancestors; having offered the hand-argha, he then turned the vessel upside down.'
Verse 9 (padma.6.214.9)
कृत्वा गंधादिदानं च पुनः सव्येन चाचमत् । सव्यापसव्येन तदा दत्वा पात्राणि स द्विजः
kṛtvā gaṁdhādidānaṁ ca punaḥ savyena cācamat savyāpasavyena tadā datvā pātrāṇi sa dvijaḥ
'Having made the offering of sandal-paste and the rest, he sipped water again with his right hand; and that brahmin then, giving the vessels in due order, moving alternately right and left—'
Verse 10 (padma.6.214.10)
तैर्ब्राह्मणैरनुज्ञातश्चक्रेऽग्नौकरणं ततः । आज्यादिहविषा राजंस्तान्यमत्राण्यपूरयत्
tairbrāhmaṇairanujñātaścakre'gnaukaraṇaṁ tataḥ ājyādihaviṣā rājaṁstānyamatrāṇyapūrayat
'—having been given leave by those brahmins, then performed the fire-offering; O king, he filled those vessels with clarified butter and other oblations.'
Verse 11 (padma.6.214.11)
अनुत्तानोत्तानपाणिः कुर्वन्पात्रावलंबनम् । पपाठ पाठितो विप्रैः पृथ्वी त्वेति द्विजन्मनाम्
anuttānottānapāṇiḥ kurvanpātrāvalaṁbanam papāṭha pāṭhito vipraiḥ pṛthvī tveti dvijanmanām
'With his hands now turned palm-down, now palm-up, holding fast to the vessel, he recited, as prompted by the brahmins, the verse beginning "Thou art the earth—" for the twice-born.'
Verse 12 (padma.6.214.12)
असंस्कृतप्रणीतानामिति मंत्रेण स द्विजः । दर्भेषु दक्षिणाग्रेषु ददौ च विकिरासनम्
asaṁskṛtapraṇītānāmiti maṁtreṇa sa dvijaḥ darbheṣu dakṣiṇāgreṣu dadau ca vikirāsanam
'With the mantra "Of the unconsecrated who have gone before—" that brahmin then offered the vikira portion upon the kusha-grass, its tips pointing south.'
Verse 13 (padma.6.214.13)
अग्निदग्धेति मंत्रेण घृतमिश्रान्नमक्षिपत् । जलेन सह राजेंद्र विष्टरे कुशकल्पिते
agnidagdheti maṁtreṇa ghṛtamiśrānnamakṣipat jalena saha rājeṁdra viṣṭare kuśakalpite
'O king of kings, with the mantra "Fire-consumed—" he cast down the food mixed with ghee, together with water, upon the seat fashioned of kusha-grass.'
Verse 14 (padma.6.214.14)
सव्येन पुनराचम्य ददौ चुलकजीवनम् । तृप्ताः स्थेति च संपृच्छ्यातृप्तास्म प्रतिभाषिताः
savyena punarācamya dadau culakajīvanam tṛptāḥ stheti ca saṁpṛcchyātṛptāsma pratibhāṣitāḥ
'Sipping water again with his right hand, he gave a handful of water for their sustenance; and, asking, "Are you satisfied?", he was answered, "We are not yet satisfied."'
Verse 15 (padma.6.214.15)
शेषान्नभोजने तेषां जग्राहाज्ञां द्विजन्मनाम् । पिंडार्थं वेदिकां कृत्वा वितस्तिप्रमितां द्विजः
śeṣānnabhojane teṣāṁ jagrāhājñāṁ dvijanmanām piṁḍārthaṁ vedikāṁ kṛtvā vitastipramitāṁ dvijaḥ
'He then obtained the leave of those twice-born to partake of the remaining food; and that brahmin made an altar-plot, a span in size, for the offering of the pindas.'
Verse 16 (padma.6.214.16)
रेखां चकार दर्भेण दक्षिणाभिमुखीं नृप । ये रूपाणीति मंत्रेण दधेऽग्निदिशि चोल्मुकम्
rekhāṁ cakāra darbheṇa dakṣiṇābhimukhīṁ nṛpa ye rūpāṇīti maṁtreṇa dadhe'gnidiśi colmukam
'O king, he drew a line with kusha-grass facing southward; and with the mantra "Whatever forms—" he placed a firebrand in the direction of the fire.'
Verse 17 (padma.6.214.17)
पूर्वजन्मनि या माता पिता यश्च महीपते । तयोश्च पितरौ यौ हि यौ च राजन् पितामहौ
pūrvajanmani yā mātā pitā yaśca mahīpate tayośca pitarau yau hi yau ca rājan pitāmahau
'O ruler of the earth, whoever were his mother and father in his former birth, and whoever were their own parents, and, O king, whoever were his grandparents—'
Verse 18 (padma.6.214.18)
यः प्रमातामहश्चापि पितरौ राजसत्तम । पित्रादीन्षट्सपत्नीकांस्तानुद्दिश्य यथाविधि
yaḥ pramātāmahaścāpi pitarau rājasattama pitrādīnṣaṭsapatnīkāṁstānuddiśya yathāvidhi
'—and whoever was his great-grandfather, O best of kings — dedicating the rite, as prescribed, to those six forebears together with their wives—'
Verse 19 (padma.6.214.19)
कुशासनानि दत्त्वा वै ददौ पिंडान्षडैव हि । गंधादिभिश्च संपूज्य मध्यपिंडविसर्जनम्
kuśāsanāni dattvā vai dadau piṁḍānṣaḍaiva hi gaṁdhādibhiśca saṁpūjya madhyapiṁḍavisarjanam
'—having given seats of kusha-grass, he then offered exactly six pindas; and, having honored them with sandal-paste and the rest, performed the release of the middle pinda.'
Verse 20 (padma.6.214.20)
कृत्वाघ्राय च वामांसे पिंडपात्रं न्यवेशयेत् । जलपात्रं तदादाय वाजेवाजे पठन्निति
kṛtvāghrāya ca vāmāṁse piṁḍapātraṁ nyaveśayet jalapātraṁ tadādāya vājevāje paṭhanniti
'Having smelled it, he set the vessel of pindas upon his left shoulder; and, taking up the water-vessel, he recited the verse beginning "In every battle—"'
Verse 21 (padma.6.214.21)
पाद्यार्घं च पुनर्दत्त्वा दक्षिणाद्यैरतूतुषत् । आद्वारं ताननुव्रज्य तेभ्यो लब्ध्वानुशासनम्
pādyārghaṁ ca punardattvā dakṣiṇādyairatūtuṣat ādvāraṁ tānanuvrajya tebhyo labdhvānuśāsanam
'—having offered the foot-water and argha once more, he satisfied the brahmins with gifts and the rest; escorting them to the door, and having received their blessing—'
Verse 22 (padma.6.214.22)
बुभुजे च स्वयं राजन्बांधवैः सह स द्विजः । एवं समाप्य राजेंद्र श्राद्धं स द्विजसत्तमः
bubhuje ca svayaṁ rājanbāṁdhavaiḥ saha sa dvijaḥ evaṁ samāpya rājeṁdra śrāddhaṁ sa dvijasattamaḥ
'—O king, that brahmin himself then ate, together with his kinsmen. Having thus completed the shraddha, O king of kings, that most excellent brahmin—'
Verse 23 (padma.6.214.23)
पूर्वसबंधिनां तत्र तीर्थे मधुवने शुभे । यदा चचाल शांतात्मा पितुराश्रमकं प्रति
pūrvasabaṁdhināṁ tatra tīrthe madhuvane śubhe yadā cacāla śāṁtātmā piturāśramakaṁ prati
'—completed the shraddha for his forebears and kinsmen there at the auspicious tirtha of Madhuvana; and when, his mind now at peace, he set out toward his father's hermitage—'
Verse 24 (padma.6.214.24)
तदा संमिलिता मार्गे सर्वे ते श्राद्धभोजिनः । विमानषट्कमारूढा दिव्याभरणभूषिताः । दिव्यांबरधरा राजन्नित्यूचुस्तं द्विजोत्तमम्
tadā saṁmilitā mārge sarve te śrāddhabhojinaḥ vimānaṣaṭkamārūḍhā divyābharaṇabhūṣitāḥ divyāṁbaradharā rājannityūcustaṁ dvijottamam
'—then, O king, all those ancestors who had partaken of the shraddha met him on the way, mounted on six celestial chariots, adorned with divine ornaments, clad in divine garments, and thus addressed that foremost of brahmins—'
Verse 25 (padma.6.214.25)
पितर ऊचुः - भो वत्स विप्रशार्दूल वृणीष्व वरमुत्तमम् । तीर्थेऽत्र कुर्वता श्राद्धं भवता तारिता वयम्
pitara ūcuḥ - bho vatsa vipraśārdūla vṛṇīṣva varamuttamam tīrthe'tra kurvatā śrāddhaṁ bhavatā tāritā vayam
The ancestors said: 'O child, tiger among brahmins, choose an excellent boon; by your performing the shraddha at this tirtha, we have been delivered.'
Verse 26 (padma.6.214.26)
वयं गणत्वमापन्नाः श्रीपतेस्त्वत्प्रसादतः । प्रार्थयस्व महाबुद्धे यदिष्टं तव चेतसि
vayaṁ gaṇatvamāpannāḥ śrīpatestvatprasādataḥ prārthayasva mahābuddhe yadiṣṭaṁ tava cetasi
'By your grace, we have attained the state of attendants of the Lord of Shri; ask, O great-minded one, for whatever is desired in your heart.'
Verse 27 (padma.6.214.27)
मुनिपुत्र उवाच- के यूयं कुत आयाता गणत्वं हि कुतो गताः । उपकारं विना कस्माद्वरं यन्मे प्रयच्छत
muniputra uvāca- ke yūyaṁ kuta āyātā gaṇatvaṁ hi kuto gatāḥ upakāraṁ vinā kasmādvaraṁ yanme prayacchata
The sage's son said: 'Who are you, from where have you come, and how have you attained this state of divine attendants? Without any service from me, why do you offer me a boon?'
Verse 28 (padma.6.214.28)
नारद उवाच- इत्याकर्ण्यवचस्तस्य पूर्वजन्मसुतस्य वै । पिता प्रोवाच यो दुःखाद्भक्षयित्वा विषं मृतः
nārada uvāca- ityākarṇyavacastasya pūrvajanmasutasya vai pitā provāca yo duḥkhādbhakṣayitvā viṣaṁ mṛtaḥ
Narada said: 'Hearing these words of the son from his former birth, his father — the one who had died from eating poison out of grief — spoke.'
Verse 29 (padma.6.214.29)
पितोवाच - अहं तव पिता विप्र पूर्वजन्मनि भूसुरः । भार्यया व्यभिचारिण्या मात्रा ते पीडिता भृशम्
pitovāca - ahaṁ tava pitā vipra pūrvajanmani bhūsuraḥ bhāryayā vyabhicāriṇyā mātrā te pīḍitā bhṛśam
The father said: 'O brahmin, I was your father, a brahmin, in your former birth; sorely tormented by your unchaste mother, my wife—'
Verse 30 (padma.6.214.30)
अतीवदुःखमापन्नो भक्षयित्वा विषं निशि । अपमृत्युं गतस्तस्मादभवं रजनीचरः
atīvaduḥkhamāpanno bhakṣayitvā viṣaṁ niśi apamṛtyuṁ gatastasmādabhavaṁ rajanīcaraḥ
'—overcome with the deepest grief, I ate poison one night; from that untimely death, I became a rakshasa.'
Verse 31 (padma.6.214.31)
एवं मन्वतरं तात शतं पंचदशाधिकम् । वर्षाणां च व्यतीतं तद्राक्षसत्वं गते मयि
evaṁ manvataraṁ tāta śataṁ paṁcadaśādhikam varṣāṇāṁ ca vyatītaṁ tadrākṣasatvaṁ gate mayi
'Thus, my child, a full manvantara, and a hundred and fifteen years besides, passed while I remained in that state of a rakshasa.'
Verse 32 (padma.6.214.32)
इदानीं षोडशाब्दे तु त्वया श्राद्धे कृतेऽत्र वै । पुण्ये मधुवने तीर्थे देवत्वं प्राप्तवानहम्
idānīṁ ṣoḍaśābde tu tvayā śrāddhe kṛte'tra vai puṇye madhuvane tīrthe devatvaṁ prāptavānaham
'Now, in your sixteenth year, when you performed the shraddha here at this sacred tirtha of Madhuvana, I attained godhood.'
Verse 33 (padma.6.214.33)
एतद्विमानमायांतं स्वर्गादिंद्रप्रणोदितम् । सगणं साप्सरोवृंदं ममारोहणहेतवे
etadvimānamāyāṁtaṁ svargādiṁdrapraṇoditam sagaṇaṁ sāpsarovṛṁdaṁ mamārohaṇahetave
'This chariot, coming from heaven, sent by Indra, together with its attendants and its host of apsaras, has come here for me to ascend.'
Verse 34 (padma.6.214.34)
अत्र तुभ्यं वरं दातुं सगणः साप्सरोगणः । विमानवरमारुह्य गच्छन्स्वर्गेऽहमागमम्
atra tubhyaṁ varaṁ dātuṁ sagaṇaḥ sāpsarogaṇaḥ vimānavaramāruhya gacchansvarge'hamāgamam
'Mounting this fine chariot with its attendants and its host of apsaras, on my way to heaven, I have come here to grant you a boon.'
Verse 35 (padma.6.214.35)
वरं वरय भद्रं ते न विलंबसहा वयम् । ऐरावतगजारूढः सुरेशो मामवेक्षते
varaṁ varaya bhadraṁ te na vilaṁbasahā vayam airāvatagajārūḍhaḥ sureśo māmavekṣate
'Choose your boon — blessings be upon you; we cannot bear delay. The lord of the gods, mounted on his elephant Airavata, awaits me.'
Verse 36 (padma.6.214.36)
नारद उवाच। इत्युक्त्वा निजवृत्तांतं दत्त्वा च निजसूनवे । तत्प्रार्थितां हरेर्भक्तिं जगाम स दिवं नृप
nārada uvāca ityuktvā nijavṛttāṁtaṁ dattvā ca nijasūnave tatprārthitāṁ harerbhaktiṁ jagāma sa divaṁ nṛpa
Narada said: 'Having thus related his own story, and having granted his own son the devotion to Hari that he asked for, he, O king, went on to heaven.'
Verse 37 (padma.6.214.37)
अथ प्रोवाच तन्माता पूर्वजन्मसुतं च तम् । मातोवाच-। त्वत्प्रसादादहं जाता देवी मुक्ता च पापतः
atha provāca tanmātā pūrvajanmasutaṁ ca tam mātovāca- tvatprasādādahaṁ jātā devī muktā ca pāpataḥ
'Then his mother spoke to that son from her former birth. The mother said: "By your grace I have become a goddess, and have been freed from sin."'
Verse 38 (padma.6.214.38)
प्राप्तं शच्याः सखीत्वं मे पापयापि द्विजोत्तम । त्वयात्र विहिते श्राद्धे तीर्थे विश्रांतिसंज्ञके
prāptaṁ śacyāḥ sakhītvaṁ me pāpayāpi dvijottama tvayātra vihite śrāddhe tīrthe viśrāṁtisaṁjñake
'"O foremost of brahmins, even I, sinful as I was, have attained the friendship of Shachi, through your having performed the shraddha here at this tirtha named Vishranti."'
Verse 39 (padma.6.214.39)
प्रार्थयस्व महाभाग निजचित्तसमीहितम् । ददामि ते यतोऽस्माकं देवीनां न वचो मृषा
prārthayasva mahābhāga nijacittasamīhitam dadāmi te yato'smākaṁ devīnāṁ na vaco mṛṣā
'"Ask, O most fortunate one, for whatever your heart desires; I shall grant it to you, for the word of us goddesses is never false."'
Verse 40 (padma.6.214.40)
येन पापेन जाताहं गोधा च पितृकानने । नरके चिरमास्थाय तत्त्वं वेत्सि द्विजोत्तम
yena pāpena jātāhaṁ godhā ca pitṛkānane narake ciramāsthāya tattvaṁ vetsi dvijottama
'"O foremost of brahmins, you know the truth of that sin by which I was born as a lizard in the ancestral forest, having long dwelt in hell."'
Verse 41 (padma.6.214.41)
अनुजानीहि मां पुत्र पुलोमतनया दिवि । मामपेक्षितमाकाशे वृता देवांगनागणैः
anujānīhi māṁ putra pulomatanayā divi māmapekṣitamākāśe vṛtā devāṁganāgaṇaiḥ
'"Give me your leave, my son; Puloman's daughter awaits me in the sky, surrounded by hosts of celestial women."'
Verse 42 (padma.6.214.42)
नारद उवाच- इत्युक्त्वा सापि तन्माता निष्कामाय स्वसूनवे । ययौ त्रिविष्टपं राजन्शिरसा तेन वंदिता
nārada uvāca- ityuktvā sāpi tanmātā niṣkāmāya svasūnave yayau triviṣṭapaṁ rājanśirasā tena vaṁditā
Narada said: 'Having said this, that mother too, bowed to by her own desireless son, went on, O king, to heaven.'
Verse 43 (padma.6.214.43)
ततः पितामहस्तस्य स्वपौत्रं तं द्विजोत्तमम् । उवाच वचनं भूयः हरेर्बिभ्रत्स्वरूपताम्
tataḥ pitāmahastasya svapautraṁ taṁ dvijottamam uvāca vacanaṁ bhūyaḥ harerbibhratsvarūpatām
'Then his grandfather, now bearing the very form of Hari, spoke once more to that foremost brahmin, his own grandson.'
Verse 44 (padma.6.214.44)
पितामह उवाच- वत्सवत्स चिरंजीव लभस्व निजवांच्छितम् । त्वत्प्रसादाद्वयं तीर्णा दुस्तराद्भवसागरात्
pitāmaha uvāca- vatsavatsa ciraṁjīva labhasva nijavāṁcchitam tvatprasādādvayaṁ tīrṇā dustarādbhavasāgarāt
The grandfather said: 'My child, my child, may you live long, and obtain your own heart's desire; by your grace, we have crossed over the insurmountable ocean of worldly existence.'
Verse 45 (padma.6.214.45)
पितामहोऽहं ते वत्स तवेयं च पितामही । मृतं मानुगता साध्वी सालोक्यमचिरं गता
pitāmaho'haṁ te vatsa taveyaṁ ca pitāmahī mṛtaṁ mānugatā sādhvī sālokyamaciraṁ gatā
'I am your grandfather, my child, and this is your grandmother; devoted, she followed me into death when I died, and swiftly attained union with my own world.'
Verse 46 (padma.6.214.46)
अद्य त्वयात्र विश्रांतौ विहिते श्राद्धकर्मणि । आवयोस्तु हरेर्लोके लब्धा तस्य स्वरूपता
adya tvayātra viśrāṁtau vihite śrāddhakarmaṇi āvayostu harerloke labdhā tasya svarūpatā
'Now, by the shraddha rite performed by you here at Vishranti, we two have obtained, in Hari's own world, his very own form.'
Verse 47 (padma.6.214.47)
नारद उवाच- एवमुक्त्वा तया सार्द्धं स्वस्त्रिया भूपसत्तम । ब्रह्मलोकमतिक्रम्य वैकुंठं स ययौ द्विजः
nārada uvāca- evamuktvā tayā sārddhaṁ svastriyā bhūpasattama brahmalokamatikramya vaikuṁṭhaṁ sa yayau dvijaḥ
Narada said: 'O best of kings, having said this, that brahmin, together with his own wife, passing beyond even Brahmaloka, went on to Vaikuntha.'
Verse 48 (padma.6.214.48)
अथ प्रोवाच राजेंद्र वचस्तत्प्रपितामहः । यत्ते तत्कथयाम्यद्य शृणुष्वैकमना द्विज
atha provāca rājeṁdra vacastatprapitāmahaḥ yatte tatkathayāmyadya śṛṇuṣvaikamanā dvija
'Then, O king of kings, his great-grandfather spoke this word — hear now, O brahmin, with a single-pointed mind, what I shall tell you.'
Verse 49 (padma.6.214.49)
प्रपितामह उवाच- भोभो वत्स महाभाग तवाहं प्रपितामहः । भ्रूणहत्याफलेनाहं शौकरीं योनिमाप्तवान्
prapitāmaha uvāca- bhobho vatsa mahābhāga tavāhaṁ prapitāmahaḥ bhrūṇahatyāphalenāhaṁ śaukarīṁ yonimāptavān
The great-grandfather said: 'O my child, most fortunate one, I am your great-grandfather; by the fruit of causing an abortion, I obtained birth in the womb of a pig.'
Verse 50 (padma.6.214.50)
ततो विनिर्गतस्तात श्वाभवं पापपीडितः । ततः स्थावरतां प्राप्तो विंध्ये पर्वतसत्तमे
tato vinirgatastāta śvābhavaṁ pāpapīḍitaḥ tataḥ sthāvaratāṁ prāpto viṁdhye parvatasattame
'From there, my child, tormented by that sin, I emerged and became a dog; from that, I attained the state of an immobile being — a tree on the excellent mountain Vindhya.'
Verse 51 (padma.6.214.51)
तत्रापि चिरकालेन स्थितं स्थावरतां दधत् । हस्तिना केनचित्तात मूलादुत्पाटितो बलात्
tatrāpi cirakālena sthitaṁ sthāvaratāṁ dadhat hastinā kenacittāta mūlādutpāṭito balāt
'There too, having remained a long while, holding to that fixed state, my child, I was forcibly uprooted by some elephant.'
Verse 52 (padma.6.214.52)
तस्मिन्नेव ततः काले त्वया श्राद्धमकारि वै । अस्मिंस्तीर्थोत्तमे तात मुक्तोऽहं स्थावरात्ततः
tasminneva tataḥ kāle tvayā śrāddhamakāri vai asmiṁstīrthottame tāta mukto'haṁ sthāvarāttataḥ
'At that very time, you performed the shraddha at this excellent tirtha, my child, and I was thereby freed from that immobile state.'
Verse 53 (padma.6.214.53)
प्राप्तोऽयं यक्षराजस्य नगर्य्यां वास उत्तमः । देह्यनुज्ञां द्विजश्रेष्ठ यामि तां त्वत्प्रसादतः
prāpto'yaṁ yakṣarājasya nagaryyāṁ vāsa uttamaḥ dehyanujñāṁ dvijaśreṣṭha yāmi tāṁ tvatprasādataḥ
'I have obtained an excellent dwelling in the city of the king of the Yakshas; give me your leave, O foremost brahmin — by your grace I now go there.'
Verse 54 (padma.6.214.54)
त्वां दिदृक्षुरिहायातो दृष्टस्त्वं पुण्यदर्शनः । तीर्थं च सर्वतीर्थेषु श्रेष्ठं मधुवनं मया
tvāṁ didṛkṣurihāyāto dṛṣṭastvaṁ puṇyadarśanaḥ tīrthaṁ ca sarvatīrtheṣu śreṣṭhaṁ madhuvanaṁ mayā
'Wishing to see you, I came here; I have seen you, whose very sight is sacred; and I have seen Madhuvana, best of all tirthas.'
Verse 55 (padma.6.214.55)
नारद उवाच- इत्युक्तस्तेन राजेंद्र मुनिपुत्रः स धर्मवित् । पप्रच्छ शिरसा नम्य तं निजं प्रपितामहम्
nārada uvāca- ityuktastena rājeṁdra muniputraḥ sa dharmavit papraccha śirasā namya taṁ nijaṁ prapitāmaham
Narada said: 'O king of kings, thus addressed, that sage's son, learned in dharma, bowing his head, questioned his own great-grandfather.'
Verse 56 (padma.6.214.56)
ऋषिरुवाच- ब्राह्मणानां कुले तात जातोऽसि त्वं गरीयसि । कथं विहितवान्पापं भ्रूणहत्याभिधं गुरो
ṛṣiruvāca- brāhmaṇānāṁ kule tāta jāto'si tvaṁ garīyasi kathaṁ vihitavānpāpaṁ bhrūṇahatyābhidhaṁ guro
The sage said: 'My child, you were born into an exalted family of brahmins; how, O honored one, did you commit the sin called killing of the unborn?'
Verse 57 (padma.6.214.57)
येन निंद्यां समापन्नो भवान्योनिपरं पराम् । समाचक्ष्व महाभाग यदि तत्स्मृतिरस्ति ते
yena niṁdyāṁ samāpanno bhavānyoniparaṁ parām samācakṣva mahābhāga yadi tatsmṛtirasti te
'By which you came, birth after birth, into such despicable wombs — tell me this, O most fortunate one, if you have memory of it.'
Verse 58 (padma.6.214.58)
प्रपितामह उवाच- पुराहं द्विजशार्दूल ब्राह्मणस्येव जन्मनि । मंत्रयंत्रविधानेन कृतवान्वृत्तिमात्मनः
prapitāmaha uvāca- purāhaṁ dvijaśārdūla brāhmaṇasyeva janmani maṁtrayaṁtravidhānena kṛtavānvṛttimātmanaḥ
The great-grandfather said: 'O tiger among brahmins, formerly, in my birth as a brahmin, I made my livelihood by the practice of mantras and yantras.'
Verse 59 (padma.6.214.59)
धनलोभेन नारीणां गर्भार्थमहमौषधम् । दत्तवांश्चैव नाशाय दैवोपहतचेतनः
dhanalobhena nārīṇāṁ garbhārthamahamauṣadham dattavāṁścaiva nāśāya daivopahatacetanaḥ
'Out of greed for wealth, my mind struck by fate, I would give medicine to women, for the destruction of their pregnancy.'
Verse 60 (padma.6.214.60)
लोभो हि धनहीनानां जनानां ज्ञानमाहरेत् । शुचिकाले दिनाधीशः कुल्यानामिव जीवनम्
lobho hi dhanahīnānāṁ janānāṁ jñānamāharet śucikāle dinādhīśaḥ kulyānāmiva jīvanam
'For greed steals away the wisdom of men without wealth, just as, in the dry season, the sun steals the very life from small streams.'
Verse 61 (padma.6.214.61)
ज्ञाने नष्टे जनस्तात पापमाचरते ध्रुवम् । पापान्नरकमाप्नोति ततो याति कुयोनिताम्
jñāne naṣṭe janastāta pāpamācarate dhruvam pāpānnarakamāpnoti tato yāti kuyonitām
'When wisdom is destroyed, my child, a man surely commits sin; from sin he attains hell, and from that he goes on to a degraded birth.'
Verse 62 (padma.6.214.62)
काचिदेका तदा नारी गुर्विणी मामपृच्छत । किं जनिष्याम्यहं विप्र पुत्रं वेत्यथ वा स्त्रियम्
kācidekā tadā nārī gurviṇī māmapṛcchata kiṁ janiṣyāmyahaṁ vipra putraṁ vetyatha vā striyam
'Then a certain pregnant woman asked me: "O brahmin, shall I bear a son, or a daughter?"'
Verse 63 (padma.6.214.63)
तदाहमुक्तवांस्तां वै तव कन्या भविष्यति । पुत्रोत्पत्तिकृते तुभ्यं प्रदास्यामि महौषधम्
tadāhamuktavāṁstāṁ vai tava kanyā bhaviṣyati putrotpattikṛte tubhyaṁ pradāsyāmi mahauṣadham
'I then told her: "You shall have a daughter; but for the sake of a son, I shall give you a powerful medicine."'
Verse 64 (padma.6.214.64)
इत्युक्ता च मया नारी दुर्बुद्धिस्त्रीशिरोमणिः । जग्राह मम पादौ तु दत्तं हेमपलं च मे
ityuktā ca mayā nārī durbuddhistrīśiromaṇiḥ jagrāha mama pādau tu dattaṁ hemapalaṁ ca me
'Thus told by me, that woman — foremost among foolish women — clasped my feet, and gave me a pala of gold.'
Verse 65 (padma.6.214.65)
इत्युवाच च सा मह्यं षट्कन्याजनिता मया । सप्तमीयं त्वया चोक्ता जीविष्ये स्या न जन्मनि
ityuvāca ca sā mahyaṁ ṣaṭkanyājanitā mayā saptamīyaṁ tvayā coktā jīviṣye syā na janmani
'And she said this to me: "I have already borne six daughters through you; this seventh, you tell me, will also be a daughter — I shall not live if it is so."'
Verse 66 (padma.6.214.66)
तथा कुरु महाबुद्धे यथाहं वै न कन्यकाम् । जनयिष्यामि विप्रान्यां निजप्राणविनाशिनीम्
tathā kuru mahābuddhe yathāhaṁ vai na kanyakām janayiṣyāmi viprānyāṁ nijaprāṇavināśinīm
'"Do something, O wise one, so that I do not bear yet another daughter, O brahmin — a destroyer of my very life."'
Verse 67 (padma.6.214.67)
इत्याकर्ण्य वचस्तस्यास्तामहं पुनरुक्तवान् । प्रसूतिकाले दास्यामि पुत्रोत्पाद्यहमौषधम्
ityākarṇya vacastasyāstāmahaṁ punaruktavān prasūtikāle dāsyāmi putrotpādyahamauṣadham
'Hearing her words, I told her again: "At the time of birth, I shall give you a medicine to produce a son."'
Verse 68 (padma.6.214.68)
तथेति सा वचो मह्यं प्रतिश्रुत्य गता गृहम् । अपेक्षमाणा तं कालं तस्थौ वाक्यप्रतीतिकृत्
tatheti sā vaco mahyaṁ pratiśrutya gatā gṛham apekṣamāṇā taṁ kālaṁ tasthau vākyapratītikṛt
'"So be it," she said, and, trusting my word, went home; and, awaiting that time, she remained, believing in my promise.'
Verse 69 (padma.6.214.69)
तस्यां गतायां भो तात चिंतया भवमातुरः । इत्यहं द्विजशार्दूल तच्छृणुष्व वदामि ते
tasyāṁ gatāyāṁ bho tāta ciṁtayā bhavamāturaḥ ityahaṁ dvijaśārdūla tacchṛṇuṣva vadāmi te
'O child, when she had gone, I fell into anxious thought; O tiger among brahmins, hear now what I say to you.'
Verse 70 (padma.6.214.70)
पुत्रोत्पत्तिप्रतीतेयं मह्यं दत्तवती पलम् । सुवर्णस्य न जानामि किमस्याः संभविष्यति
putrotpattipratīteyaṁ mahyaṁ dattavatī palam suvarṇasya na jānāmi kimasyāḥ saṁbhaviṣyati
'"This woman, trusting in the birth of a son, has given me a pala of gold; I do not know what will become of her."'
Verse 71 (padma.6.214.71)
किमत्र करणीयं मे कथमेतत्सुवर्णकम् । पलप्रमाणं तिष्ठेद्वै दरिद्रस्य गृहे मम
kimatra karaṇīyaṁ me kathametatsuvarṇakam palapramāṇaṁ tiṣṭhedvai daridrasya gṛhe mama
'"What am I to do here? How shall this measure of gold remain safe in my poor house?"'
Verse 72 (padma.6.214.72)
एवं विमृश्य तद्दास्यास्तस्यै हस्तेन दापितम् । गर्भपातकरं तात मया दारुणमौषधम्
evaṁ vimṛśya taddāsyāstasyai hastena dāpitam garbhapātakaraṁ tāta mayā dāruṇamauṣadham
'Having thus reflected, I sent, by the hand of her maidservant, my child, a terrible medicine to her, one that causes miscarriage.'
Verse 73 (padma.6.214.73)
तेनौषधेन तस्यास्तु गर्भस्रावेऽभवत्तदा । मासे तृतीये न ज्ञातं चिह्नं पुरुषकन्ययोः
tenauṣadhena tasyāstu garbhasrāve'bhavattadā māse tṛtīye na jñātaṁ cihnaṁ puruṣakanyayoḥ
'By that medicine, her pregnancy then miscarried; in the third month, no sign could yet be known of whether it was male or female.'
Verse 74 (padma.6.214.74)
तदा सा मद्गृहं प्राप्ता विषण्णा गर्भस्रावतः । अथार्थयत्सुवर्णं तन्निराशा पुत्रजन्मनि
tadā sā madgṛhaṁ prāptā viṣaṇṇā garbhasrāvataḥ athārthayatsuvarṇaṁ tannirāśā putrajanmani
'Then, grieving over the miscarriage, and now despairing of a son's birth, she came to my house and demanded her gold back.'
Verse 75 (padma.6.214.75)
तदाहमिष्टकाचूर्णं भस्मना च समन्वितम् । हरिद्राचूर्णसंयुक्तं सांबु तस्यै अदर्शयम्
tadāhamiṣṭakācūrṇaṁ bhasmanā ca samanvitam haridrācūrṇasaṁyuktaṁ sāṁbu tasyai adarśayam
'Then I showed her powdered brick, mixed with ash, combined with turmeric powder, together with water.'
Verse 76 (padma.6.214.76)
एतच्चूर्णं कृतं मातस्त्वत्पुत्रोत्पत्तये मया । त्वद्दानाद्द्विगुणं द्रव्यं लग्नमेतस्य साधने
etaccūrṇaṁ kṛtaṁ mātastvatputrotpattaye mayā tvaddānāddviguṇaṁ dravyaṁ lagnametasya sādhane
'"O mother, this powder I have prepared for the birth of your son; twice the wealth you gave has gone into making this remedy."'
Verse 77 (padma.6.214.77)
इत्युक्त्वा सा मया तात त्यक्त्वा चूर्णं गृहं ययौ । मामुक्त्वेति गृहीष्यामि काले त्वत्तो द्विजोत्तम
ityuktvā sā mayā tāta tyaktvā cūrṇaṁ gṛhaṁ yayau māmuktveti gṛhīṣyāmi kāle tvatto dvijottama
'Having thus spoken, my child, and having left that powder with me, she went home, saying to me: "In time, O foremost brahmin, I shall take it from you."'
Verse 78 (padma.6.214.78)
एवं मया कृता तात भ्रूणहत्यातिदारुणा । ययातिकुत्सिते योनित्रितये भ्रमितं मया
evaṁ mayā kṛtā tāta bhrūṇahatyātidāruṇā yayātikutsite yonitritaye bhramitaṁ mayā
'Thus, my child, did I commit this most terrible sin of causing an abortion; and because of it I wandered through three despicable wombs.'
Verse 79 (padma.6.214.79)
त्वत्प्रसादादहं मुक्तः सांप्रतं स्थावरत्वतः । देह्यनुज्ञां मुनिश्रेष्ठ याम्यहं ह्यलकां शुभाम्
tvatprasādādahaṁ muktaḥ sāṁprataṁ sthāvaratvataḥ dehyanujñāṁ muniśreṣṭha yāmyahaṁ hyalakāṁ śubhām
'By your grace, I have now been freed from that state of immobility; give me your leave, O foremost of sages — I now go to blessed Alaka.'

नारद उवाच- एवमुक्त्वा तु राजेंद्र तस्य तु प्रपितामहः । तेनाभिवंदितो मूर्ध्ना प्रययौ दिशमुत्तराम्
nārada uvāca- evamuktvā tu rājeṁdra tasya tu prapitāmahaḥ tenābhivaṁdito mūrdhnā prayayau diśamuttarām
Narada said: 'Having said this, O king of kings, his great-grandfather, saluted by him with a bowed head, then departed toward the northern direction—'
Verse 81 (padma.6.214.81)
विमानेन विचित्रेण किंकिणीजालमालिना । नृत्यद्गंधर्वजुष्टेन मणिप्राकारशोभिना
vimānena vicitreṇa kiṁkiṇījālamālinā nṛtyadgaṁdharvajuṣṭena maṇiprākāraśobhinā
'—upon a wondrous celestial chariot, garlanded with strings of tinkling bells, filled with dancing gandharvas, resplendent with a wall of gems.'
Verse 82 (padma.6.214.82)
अथ तस्य महाराज विप्रस्य प्रपितामही । उवाच स्वप्रपौत्रं तं विमानवरमास्थिता
atha tasya mahārāja viprasya prapitāmahī uvāca svaprapautraṁ taṁ vimānavaramāsthitā
'Then, O great king, the great-grandmother of that brahmin, seated upon a fine celestial chariot, spoke to her own great-grandson.'
Verse 83 (padma.6.214.83)
प्रपितामह्युवाच । नान्यत्र कुत्र गंतासि पुण्येनानेन सुव्रत । विना पद्मापतेः पादपद्मचिह्नितमंदिरम्
prapitāmahyuvāca nānyatra kutra gaṁtāsi puṇyenānena suvrata vinā padmāpateḥ pādapadmacihnitamaṁdiram
The great-grandmother said: 'O man of good vows, by this merit, where else could you possibly go, but to the abode marked by the lotus feet of the Lord of Padma?'
Verse 84 (padma.6.214.84)
अयं मम पतिः पापो मुने त्वत्प्रपितामहः । वारितोऽपि मया पापमाचचार सुदुष्टधीः
ayaṁ mama patiḥ pāpo mune tvatprapitāmahaḥ vārito'pi mayā pāpamācacāra suduṣṭadhīḥ
'This sinful husband of mine, O sage, your own great-grandfather, though restrained by me, still, in his utterly wicked mind, committed that sin.'
Verse 85 (padma.6.214.85)
सोऽपि त्वयातिपापात्मा तारितो दुःखसागरात् । शक्यते केन वै कर्तुं तावकं गुणवर्णनम्
so'pi tvayātipāpātmā tārito duḥkhasāgarāt śakyate kena vai kartuṁ tāvakaṁ guṇavarṇanam
'Even he, though most sinful of soul, has been delivered by you from the ocean of suffering; who indeed is able to describe your own virtues?'
Verse 86 (padma.6.214.86)
नारद उवाच- इत्युक्त्वा सापि राजेंद्र पतिलोकं जगाम ह । अलकायां चिरं पत्या तेनैव मुमुदे सह
nārada uvāca- ityuktvā sāpi rājeṁdra patilokaṁ jagāma ha alakāyāṁ ciraṁ patyā tenaiva mumude saha
Narada said: 'Having said this, O king of kings, she too went on to her husband's world, and long rejoiced together with that same husband in Alaka.'
Verse 87 (padma.6.214.87)
अथ ते मुनिपुत्रस्य सर्वे मातामहादयः । सपत्नीकाः समारुह्य विमानेषु ययुर्दिवम्
atha te muniputrasya sarve mātāmahādayaḥ sapatnīkāḥ samāruhya vimāneṣu yayurdivam
'Then all the sage's son's remaining forebears, beginning with his maternal grandfather, together with their wives, mounted their celestial chariots and went on to heaven.'
Verse 88 (padma.6.214.88)
सोऽपि द्विजवरस्तस्मात्तीर्थात्स्वपितुराश्रमम् । गत्वा तं सर्ववृत्तांतं स्वपित्रे समवर्णयत्
so'pi dvijavarastasmāttīrthātsvapiturāśramam gatvā taṁ sarvavṛttāṁtaṁ svapitre samavarṇayat
'That foremost brahmin too, going from that tirtha to his own father's hermitage, related that whole account to his father.'
Verse 89 (padma.6.214.89)
सोऽपि तत्र गतः सार्द्धं कुटुंबेन वने मधोः । चकार पर्णशालां वै विश्रांतेस्तु समीपतः
so'pi tatra gataḥ sārddhaṁ kuṭuṁbena vane madhoḥ cakāra parṇaśālāṁ vai viśrāṁtestu samīpataḥ
'He too then went there, together with his family, to the forest of Madhu, and built a hut of leaves near Vishranti.'
Verse 90 (padma.6.214.90)
तत्र विश्रांततीर्थं तु त्रिकालं स्नानमाचरन् । नाकरोद्विष्णुलोकेऽपि स्पृहां स मुनिसत्तमः
tatra viśrāṁtatīrthaṁ tu trikālaṁ snānamācaran nākarodviṣṇuloke'pi spṛhāṁ sa munisattamaḥ
'There, bathing three times a day at that Vishranti tirtha, that most excellent sage did not even desire the world of Vishnu for himself.'
Verse 91 (padma.6.214.91)
एकदा जलमध्ये स स्नानं कुर्वन्मुनिर्नृप । आचकांक्षे च भवता कदा मे हरिदर्शनम्
ekadā jalamadhye sa snānaṁ kurvanmunirnṛpa ācakāṁkṣe ca bhavatā kadā me haridarśanam
'O king, once, that sage, bathing in the midst of the water, longed within himself: "When shall I have the vision of Hari?"'
Verse 92 (padma.6.214.92)
एवं कामयमानस्य मुनिवर्यस्य भूपते । आजगाम त्वरायुक्तो पक्षिराजासनो हरिः
evaṁ kāmayamānasya munivaryasya bhūpate ājagāma tvarāyukto pakṣirājāsano hariḥ
'O king, while that finest of sages was thus longing, Hari, mounted upon the king of birds, came swiftly to him.'

लक्ष्म्या वक्षःस्थया सार्द्धं चतुर्बाहुधरो हरिः । नवीनघनवर्णांगो विद्युद्वर्णांबरावृतः
lakṣmyā vakṣaḥsthayā sārddhaṁ caturbāhudharo hariḥ navīnaghanavarṇāṁgo vidyudvarṇāṁbarāvṛtaḥ
'Hari, four-armed, together with Lakshmi dwelling upon his breast, his body dark as a fresh rain-cloud, clothed in garments the color of lightning—'

कौस्तुभोद्भासि सद्वक्षाः शंखचक्रगदाब्जभृत् । वनमालालसत्कंठो मकराकृतिकुंडलः
kaustubhodbhāsi sadvakṣāḥ śaṁkhacakragadābjabhṛt vanamālālasatkaṁṭho makarākṛtikuṁḍalaḥ
'—his chest resplendent with the Kaustubha gem, bearing the conch, discus, mace, and lotus, his throat graced by a garland of forest flowers, his ears adorned with earrings shaped like makaras—'

फुल्लांबुजपलाशाक्षः स्वलकालं कृताननः । विद्रुमाकारकरजोरुणहस्तांघ्रिसत्तलः
phullāṁbujapalāśākṣaḥ svalakālaṁ kṛtānanaḥ vidrumākārakarajoruṇahastāṁghrisattalaḥ
'—his eyes like the petals of a full-blown lotus, his face graced with locks of curling hair, his hands, feet, and their fine soles red as coral—'
Verse 96 (padma.6.214.96)
उवाच तं द्विजश्रेष्ठं दंतभासा विभासयन् । शरन्निशापतिस्तोम तिरस्कारकृतादिशः
uvāca taṁ dvijaśreṣṭhaṁ daṁtabhāsā vibhāsayan śaranniśāpatistoma tiraskārakṛtādiśaḥ
'—spoke to that foremost of brahmins, illuminating all directions with the radiance of his teeth, which put to shame the very glow of the autumn moon.'
Verse 97 (padma.6.214.97)
श्रीभगवानुवाच- भोभो द्विजवरैतन्मे तीर्थं मधुवनं शुभम् । विश्रांतसंज्ञकं स्नानात्सर्वकामोपपादकम्
śrībhagavānuvāca- bhobho dvijavaraitanme tīrthaṁ madhuvanaṁ śubham viśrāṁtasaṁjñakaṁ snānātsarvakāmopapādakam
The blessed Lord said: 'O foremost of brahmins, this auspicious Madhuvana, this tirtha of mine named Vishranti, grants every desire through the mere act of bathing.'
Verse 98 (padma.6.214.98)
अत्र त्वया स्नानकाले वांछितं मम दर्शनम् । तुभ्यं हि तन्मया दत्तं ब्रह्मादिसुरदुर्लभम्
atra tvayā snānakāle vāṁchitaṁ mama darśanam tubhyaṁ hi tanmayā dattaṁ brahmādisuradurlabham
'While bathing here, you desired my vision; that very vision, hard to attain even for Brahma and the other gods, I have now granted to you.'

त्यज देहमिमं विप्र मानुषं दिव्यमाप्नुहि । आयाहि मद्गृहं सार्द्धं मयारुह्य खगेश्वरम्
tyaja dehamimaṁ vipra mānuṣaṁ divyamāpnuhi āyāhi madgṛhaṁ sārddhaṁ mayāruhya khageśvaram
'Cast off this human body, O brahmin, and obtain a divine one; come to my own abode, mounting, together with me, the lord of birds.'

नारद उवाच- इत्याकर्ण्यवचस्तस्य श्रीपतेः स मुनीश्वरः । तुष्टाव प्रणतो भूत्वा जल एव विशांपते
nārada uvāca- ityākarṇyavacastasya śrīpateḥ sa munīśvaraḥ tuṣṭāva praṇato bhūtvā jala eva viśāṁpate
Narada said: 'O ruler of men, hearing these words of the Lord of Shri, that lord among sages, bowing down right there in the water, offered praise.'

मुनिरुवाच- श्रीपते श्रीमदंभोज संमर्दितपदांबुजम् । भवतो भवतापघ्नं वंदे त्रिदशवंदितम्
muniruvāca- śrīpate śrīmadaṁbhoja saṁmarditapadāṁbujam bhavato bhavatāpaghnaṁ vaṁde tridaśavaṁditam
The sage said: 'O Lord of Shri, I bow to your lotus feet, worn smooth by the lotus of Shri's own touch, which destroy the torment of worldly existence, and which the thirty gods themselves revere.'
Verse 102 (padma.6.214.102)
त्वदीय मायया नाथ मोहिता येऽत्र जंतवः । तेषां कदाचिन्निस्तारो न कृपामंतरेण ते
tvadīya māyayā nātha mohitā ye'tra jaṁtavaḥ teṣāṁ kadācinnistāro na kṛpāmaṁtareṇa te
'O lord, those beings here who are deluded by your own Maya — for them there is never any deliverance, save through your own compassion.'
Verse 103 (padma.6.214.103)
सत्तीर्थसेवनादीश तथा सज्जनसंगमात् । पुसां भक्तिस्तु येषां वै जायते कृपया तव
sattīrthasevanādīśa tathā sajjanasaṁgamāt pusāṁ bhaktistu yeṣāṁ vai jāyate kṛpayā tava
'O lord, through the service of true tirthas, and through the company of good men, devotion arises in men only by your own grace.'
Verse 104 (padma.6.214.104)
साधुभिर्बहुभिरीरितं हरे यो निशम्य गुणकीर्त्तनं तव । कीर्तयत्यखिलपापनाशनं मातृगर्भकुहरे स नो पतेत्
sādhubhirbahubhirīritaṁ hare yo niśamya guṇakīrttanaṁ tava kīrtayatyakhilapāpanāśanaṁ mātṛgarbhakuhare sa no patet
'O Hari, he who, hearing the praise of your virtues as declared by many holy men, himself proclaims it, destroyer of every sin — he shall not fall again into the cave of a mother's womb.'
Verse 105 (padma.6.214.105)
श्रीपते तव जनस्य मानसं दैवतस्तु पतितं महारणे । गुंठितं च रजसा जहाति नो निर्मलत्वमिव रत्नमुत्तमम्
śrīpate tava janasya mānasaṁ daivatastu patitaṁ mahāraṇe guṁṭhitaṁ ca rajasā jahāti no nirmalatvamiva ratnamuttamam
'O Lord of Shri, the mind of your devotee, though fallen upon the great battlefield of the world and covered with the dust of passion, never loses its purity — like a most excellent gem.'
Verse 106 (padma.6.214.106)
यः पुमान्पतति ते पदांबुजे दंडवत्पुलकमंगके दधत् । सोन्वयं नयति तावकं पदं स्वं च वांछितमशेषयोगिभिः
yaḥ pumānpatati te padāṁbuje daṁḍavatpulakamaṁgake dadhat sonvayaṁ nayati tāvakaṁ padaṁ svaṁ ca vāṁchitamaśeṣayogibhiḥ
'That man who falls, prostrate as a staff, before your lotus feet, his body thrilling with rapture — he, together with his lineage, attains your own abode, longed for by all yogis.'
Verse 107 (padma.6.214.107)
जीव एव तव मायया विभो मोहितो भ्रमति विश्ववर्त्मसु । त्वत्कृपाललितलोचनांचलैस्तत्क्षणं तरति विश्ववारिधिम्
jīva eva tava māyayā vibho mohito bhramati viśvavartmasu tvatkṛpālalitalocanāṁcalaistatkṣaṇaṁ tarati viśvavāridhim
'O lord, it is the soul alone that, deluded by your Maya, wanders the paths of this world; yet by the mere play of your gracious sidelong glance, it crosses the ocean of the universe in an instant.'
Verse 108 (padma.6.214.108)
नारद उवाच- इति संस्तुत्य गोविंदं दंडवत्तस्य पादयोः । पपात स मुनिश्रेष्ठो जयेति मुहुरीरयन्
nārada uvāca- iti saṁstutya goviṁdaṁ daṁḍavattasya pādayoḥ papāta sa muniśreṣṭho jayeti muhurīrayan
Narada said: 'Having thus praised Govinda, that foremost of sages fell, prostrate as a staff, at his feet, crying "Victory!" again and again.'
Verse 109 (padma.6.214.109)
श्रीपतिस्तं मुनिश्रेष्ठं दंडवत्पतितं भुवि । उत्थाप्य बाहुभिस्तूर्णं सुपर्णे समरोपयत्
śrīpatistaṁ muniśreṣṭhaṁ daṁḍavatpatitaṁ bhuvi utthāpya bāhubhistūrṇaṁ suparṇe samaropayat
'The Lord of Shri, raising up with his own arms that foremost of sages, who lay prostrate on the ground, swiftly seated him upon Garuda.'
Verse 110 (padma.6.214.110)
तत्कुटुंबं च विश्वात्मा वैकुंठं च जगाम ह । इत्येतत्कथितं राजन्शिवे मधुवनस्य वै
tatkuṭuṁbaṁ ca viśvātmā vaikuṁṭhaṁ ca jagāma ha ityetatkathitaṁ rājanśive madhuvanasya vai
'And the Soul of the universe took his family too, and went on to Vaikuntha. Thus, O king, O Shiva, has this glory of Madhuvana—'
Verse 111 (padma.6.214.111)
महात्म्यं सर्वपापघ्नं किमन्यच्छ्रोतुमिच्छसि । य इदं शृणुयान्मर्त्यः सर्वपापैः प्रमुच्यते
mahātmyaṁ sarvapāpaghnaṁ kimanyacchrotumicchasi ya idaṁ śṛṇuyānmartyaḥ sarvapāpaiḥ pramucyate
'—destroyer of every sin, been told to you. What else do you wish to hear? Whatever mortal hears this is freed from every sin.'
