The Birth of Lakshmi

Chapter 231All chaptersChapter 233

Verse 1 (padma.6.232.1)

śaṁkara uvāca tataḥ suragaṇāḥ sarve dānavādyā mahābalāḥ utpāṭya maṁdaraṁ śailaṁ cikṣipuḥ payasāṁnidhau

Shankara said: Then all the hosts of gods, the Danavas and other very powerful ones, uprooted the mountain Mandara and threw it into the ocean of milk.

Verse 2 (padma.6.232.2)

tato nārāyaṇaḥ śrīmāṁbhagavāṁbhūtabhāvanaḥ kūrmarūpeṇa taṁ śailaṁ dadhārāmitavikramaḥ

Then Narayana, glorious, the god, the origin of all beings, of measureless valor, supported that mountain in the form of a tortoise.

Verse 3 (padma.6.232.3)

anādimadhyāṁtavapurviśvarūpaḥ sanātanaḥ adhārayadgirivaraṁ saṁpūjyo jagadīśvaraḥ

Without beginning, middle, or end in his body, of universal form, eternal, he, the worshipful lord of the universe, supported the excellent mountain.

Verse 4 (padma.6.232.4)

tathaikena bhujenaiva īśvaraḥ sarvago'vyayaḥ tato devāsurāḥ sarve mamaṁthuḥ kṣīrasāgaram

And thus, with a single arm, the Lord, all-pervading, imperishable, supported it. Then all the gods and demons churned the ocean of milk,

Verse 5 (padma.6.232.5)

sarpparājena saṁveṣṭya ghargharaṁ maṁdarācalam mathyamāne'tha dugdhābdhau daivataiḥ sumahābalaiḥ

having wound the great serpent-king about Mandara as the churning-rod, while it was being churned by the very mighty celestials, in that ocean of milk.

Verse 6 (padma.6.232.6)

utpādanārthaṁ lakṣṁyāśca sarva eva maharṣayaḥ upoṣya niyamaṁ kṛtvā jepuḥ śrīsūktameva ca

For the purpose of producing Lakshmi, all the great sages, having fasted and observed the vow, recited the Shri-sukta.

Verse 7 (padma.6.232.7)

sahasranāmapaṭhanaṁ cakrurdivyā dvijottamāḥ ekādaśyāṁ tu śuddhāyāṁ mathyamāne mahāṁbudhau

The excellent divine twice-born ones recited the thousand names. On the pure eleventh day, while the great ocean was being churned,

Verse 8 (padma.6.232.8)

upoṣya ṛṣayaḥ sarve japtaṁ śrīmaṁtramuttamam kāṁkṣamāṇāśca ye japtuṁ lakṣmīnārāyaṇaṁ harim

all the sages, having fasted, recited the supreme Shri mantra. Those who wished to recite the mantra of Lakshmi-Narayana Hari —

Verse 9 (padma.6.232.9)

dhyātvā samarccayāmāsurdvijāgryā munisattamāḥ tatastasmiṁmuhūrte tu mathyamāne mahāṁbudhau

— the foremost of the twice-born, the best of sages, meditated and worshipped. Then, at that very moment, while the great ocean was being churned,

Verse 10 (padma.6.232.10)

samabhūttatra prathamaṁ kālakūṭaṁ mahāviṣam mahāpīḍaṁ mahāghoraṁ saṁvartāgnisamaprabham

there first arose the Kalakuta, a great poison, of great affliction, most terrible, radiant like the fire of universal destruction.

Verse 11 (padma.6.232.11)

dṛṣṭvā pradudruvuḥ sarve bhayārtā devadānavāḥ tatastāṁvidrutāṁdṛṣṭvā bhayārttāṁsurasattamān

Seeing it, all the gods and demons, tormented by fear, fled. Then, seeing them fleeing, the best of the gods, tormented by fear —

Verse 12 (padma.6.232.12)

tatastānabruvaṁ vākyamahaṁ tatra śubhekṣaṇe bhobho devagaṇāḥ sarvairna bhetavyaṁ viṣaṁ prati

— then I spoke this word to them, O fair-eyed one: 'O gods, all of you need not fear this poison.

Verse 13 (padma.6.232.13)

ahamāhārayiṣyāmi kālakūṭaṁ mahāviṣam ityuktāste mayā sarve devā iṁdra purogamāḥ

I shall consume the Kalakuta, the great poison.' Thus addressed by me, all those gods, led by Indra,

Verse 14 (padma.6.232.14)

sādhusādhviti vākyairmāṁ tuṣṭuvuḥ praṇatā bhṛśam taddṛṣṭvā meghasaṁkāśaṁ prādurbhūtaṁ mahāviṣam

praised me exceedingly with words of 'Well done, well done,' bowing low. Seeing that cloud-like great poison appear,

Verse 15 (padma.6.232.15)

dhyātvā nārāyaṇaṁ devaṁ hṛdaye garuḍadhvajam udayādityasaṁkāśaṁ śaṁkhacakragadādharam

having meditated in my heart upon the god Narayana, bearing the banner of Garuda,

Verse 16 (padma.6.232.16)

śrībhūmisahitaṁ devaṁ taptakāṁcanakuṁḍalam ekāgramanasā dhyātvā sarvaduḥkhaharaṁ prabhum

radiant like the rising sun, bearer of the conch, discus, and mace, the god together with Shri and Bhumi, wearing molten-gold earrings —

Verse 17 (padma.6.232.17)

nāmarūpaṁ mahāmaṁtraṁ japtvā lakṣṁyāsamaṁvitam tadviṣaṁ tu mahāghoramādyaṁ sarvabhayaṁkaram

— having meditated with a one-pointed mind upon that master, the remover of all sorrow, and having recited his name-and-form great mantra, together with Lakshmi, that most terrible, primal, all-fear-inducing poison —

Verse 18 (padma.6.232.18)

nāmatrayaprabhāvācca viṣṇoḥ sarvagatasya vai viṣaṁ tadabhavajjīrṇaṁ lokasaṁhārakārakam

— by the power of the three names of the all-pervading Vishnu, that poison then became digested, the poison which was capable of destroying the world.

Verse 19 (padma.6.232.19)

acyutānaṁta goviṁda iti nāmatrayaṁ hareḥ yo japetprayatobhaktyā praṇavādyaṁ namoṁtakam

'Achyuta, Ananta, Govinda' — these three names of Hari — whoever recites them with self-control and devotion, beginning with Om and ending with Namah,

Verse 20 (padma.6.232.20)

tasya mṛtyubhayaṁ nāsti viṣarogāgnijaṁ mahat nāmatrayaṁ mahāmaṁtraṁ japedyaḥ prayatātmavān

— for him there is no fear of death, of the great affliction born of poison, disease, or fire. Whoever, with a controlled self, recites these three names as a great mantra,

Verse 21 (padma.6.232.21)

kālamṛtyubhayaṁ cāpi tasya nāsti kimaṁyataḥ iti nāmatrayeṇaiva pītaṁ devi mayā viṣam

has no fear of death or of Time either — what need to speak of anything else? Thus, O goddess, by these three names alone I drank the poison.

Verse 22 (padma.6.232.22)

tataḥ prahṛṣṭāstridaśāstuṣṭuvurmāṁ suvismitāḥ māṁ praṇaṁya punardevā mamaṁthuḥ kṣīrasāgaram tasmiṁpramathyamāne tu mayā devaiśca bhāmini

Then the thirty gods, delighted and greatly astonished, praised me. Having bowed to me, the gods again churned the ocean of milk. As it was being churned again by me and the gods, O lovely one,

Verse 23 (padma.6.232.23)

jyeṣṭhā devī samutpaṁnā ratnasragvāsasā vṛtā utpaṁnā sā'bravīddevāṁkiṁkarttavyaṁ mayeti vai

the eldest goddess arose, adorned with jeweled garland and garment. Having arisen, she said to the gods, 'What am I to do?'

Verse 24 (padma.6.232.24)

tāmabruvaṁstu te devīṁ sarvadevagaṇā bhṛśam devā ūcuḥ yeṣāṁ gṛhāṁtare raṁye kalahaḥ saṁpravarttate

The gods said to that goddess, urgently: 'Where quarrels break out in a lovely household —

Verse 25 (padma.6.232.25)

tatte sthānaṁ prayacchāmo vasa tatrāśubhāṁvitā paruṣaṁ bhāṣaṇaṁ nityaṁ vadaṁtyanṛtavādinaḥ

— that place we grant to you; dwell there, joined with misfortune. Where those who speak falsehood constantly use harsh speech,

Verse 26 (padma.6.232.26)

saṁdhyākāle tu ye pāpāḥ svapaṁti malacetasaḥ teṣāṁ veśmani saṁtiṣṭha duḥkhadāridryadāyinī

where the sinful, of impure mind, sleep at twilight — in their house dwell, giver of misery and poverty.

Verse 27 (padma.6.232.27)

Where there are skulls, hair, ashes, bones, husks, and cinders — there shall be your constant abode, without doubt.

Verse 28 (padma.6.232.28)

yasyaveśma kapālāsthi bhasmakeśādi cihnitam tatra vasāśubhe nityaṁ kalinā saha nityaśaḥ

Whoever's house is marked by skulls, bones, ashes, hair and the like — dwell there always, O inauspicious one, ever together with Kali.

Verse 29 (padma.6.232.29)

akṛtvā pādayoḥ śaucaṁ yastvācāmati durṁmatiḥ taṁ bhajasva mahādevi kaluṣeṇa bhṛśaṁ vṛtam

He who, of evil mind, rinses his mouth without having washed his feet — attach yourself to him, O great goddess, one utterly enveloped in impurity.

Verse 30 (padma.6.232.30)

tuṣāṁgārakapālāśmavālukā vastra carṁmabhiḥ daṁtadhāvanakartāro bhaviṣyaṁti narādhamāḥ

Those base men who clean their teeth with husk, cinder, potsherd, stone, sand, cloth, or leather — these too are yours.

Verse 31 (padma.6.232.31)

ramasva kalinā devi teṣāṁ veśmasu nityaśaḥ tilapiṣṭaṁ kalaṁjaṁ ca kaligaṁ śigru gṛṁjanam

O goddess, sport with Kali always in their houses. Sesame paste, kalanja, kaliga, drumstick, carrot,

Verse 32 (padma.6.232.32)

mushroom, wild boar-flesh, bilva fruit, luffa fruit, gourd, and onion — those base men who eat these — in their houses shall be your dwelling, O goddess who gives poverty, always.'

Verse 33 (padma.6.232.33)

rudra uvāca ityādiśya surāḥ sarve jyeṣṭhāṁ ca kalivallabhām punaśca maṁthanaṁ cakruḥ kṣīrābdhiṁ susamāhitāḥ

Rudra said: Having thus instructed the eldest goddess, beloved of Kali, all the gods, well-composed, again churned the ocean of milk.

Verse 34 (padma.6.232.34)

tataḥ surā samutpaṁnā sarvābharaṇabhūṣitā vainateyasya bhāryābhūtsarvalakṣaṇaśobhitā

Then another goddess arose, adorned with every ornament; endowed with every auspicious mark, she became the wife of Vainateya.

Verse 36 (padma.6.232.36)

All these, the thousand-eyed one, with a delighted mind, took for himself. Then, at dawn, on the twelfth day, when the sun had risen,

Verse 39 (padma.6.232.39)

as it was churned again by the gods, led by Indra, then, praised by the great sages with delighted faces,

Auspicious winds blew, the sun became radiant; the fires blazed calmly, and the ten directions grew clear.

Verse 50 (padma.6.232.50)

Verse 51 (padma.6.232.51)

Verse 52 (padma.6.232.52)

Verse 53 (padma.6.232.53)

having set that mountain back as before, their desires now fulfilled, all together, led by Shiva and Brahma,

Verse 54 (padma.6.232.54)

having praised the mother with the thousand names, recited the Shri-sukta collection. Then that pleased goddess spoke to all the gods.

Verse 55 (padma.6.232.55)

śrīruvāca varaṁ vṛṇīdhvaṁ bhadraṁ vo varadāhaṁ surottamāḥ rudra uvāca ūcuḥ prāṁjalayo devāḥ śriyaṁ naṁrātmamūrtayaḥ

Shri said: Choose a boon; blessings upon you; I am the granter of boons, O best of gods. Rudra said: The gods spoke with joined palms, their forms bowed low, to Shri.

Verse 56 (padma.6.232.56)

The gods said: Be gracious, O goddess Kamala, beloved of the Lord of all worlds. O goddess, remain forever, unfailing, on Vishnu's chest.

Verse 57 (padma.6.232.57)

Protect the three worlds, O goddess; you are eternal, the Supreme Mistress. All this universe, moving and unmoving, which depends on your sidelong glance —

Verse 58 (padma.6.232.58)
