Verse 1 (padma.6.240.1)

śrīmahādeva uvāca atha varṣasahasrāṁte sarvalokamaheśvaram aditirjanayāmāsa vāmanaṁ viṣṇumacyutam

Shri Mahadeva said: Then, at the end of a thousand years, Aditi gave birth to Vamana, the great Lord of all worlds, the unfailing Vishnu.

Verse 2 (padma.6.240.2)

śrīvatsakaustubhoraskaṁ pūrṇeṁdusadṛśadyutim sundaraṁ puṁḍarīkākṣamatikharvatanuṁ harim

His chest marked with Shrivatsa and the Kaustubha gem, his splendor like the full moon, beautiful, lotus-eyed, that Hari of very short stature —

Verse 3 (padma.6.240.3)

vaṭuveṣadharaṁ devaṁ sarvavedāṁgagocaram mekhalājinadaṇḍādi cihnairaṁkitamīśvaram

the god wearing the garb of a Brahmin boy-student, versed in every Vedanga, the Lord marked with the sacred girdle, deerskin, staff, and the like.

Verse 4 (padma.6.240.4)

taṁ dṛṣṭvā devatāḥ sarve śatakratupurogamāḥ stutvā maharṣibhiḥ sārddhaṁ namaścakrurmahaujasam

Seeing him, all the gods with Indra at their head, together with the great sages, praised and bowed to that one of great splendor.

Verse 5 (padma.6.240.5)

tataḥ prasanno bhagavānprovāca surasattamān vāmana uvāca kiṁ kartavyaṁ mayā cādya tadbravītha surottamāḥ

Then the pleased Lord spoke to the best of the gods. Vamana said: "What is to be done by me today? Tell me that, O best of gods."

Verse 6 (padma.6.240.6)

śrīśaṁkara uvāca tataḥ prahṛṣṭāstridaśāstamūcuḥ parameśvaram devā ūcuḥ asminkāle baleryajño varttate madhusūdana

Shri Shankara said: Then the joyful gods spoke to that Supreme Lord. The gods said: "O Madhusudana, at this time Bali's sacrifice is underway.

Verse 7 (padma.6.240.7)

apratyākhyānakālo'yaṁ tasya daityapateḥ prabho yācitvā tridivaṁ lokaṁ tannastvaṁ dātumarhasi

O Lord, this is the time when that lord of daityas cannot refuse any request. Begging from him the heavenly world, you should give it to us."

Verse 8 (padma.6.240.8)

śaṁkara uvāca ityuktāstridaśaissarvairājagāma baliṁ hariḥ yāgadeśe samāsīnamṛṣibhissārddhamaṣṭabhiḥ

Shankara said: Thus addressed by all the gods, Hari went to Bali, who was seated in the sacrificial ground together with eight sages.

Verse 9 (padma.6.240.9)

abhyāgataṁ tu taṁ dṛṣṭvā sahasotthāya daityarāṭ abhyāgataḥ svayaṁ viṣṇuritihāsa samanvitaḥ

Seeing him arrive as a guest, the king of daityas rose at once, thinking in wonder, "Vishnu himself has come as my guest."

Verse 10 (padma.6.240.10)

pūjayāmāsa vidhinā niveśya kusumāsane praṇipatya namaskṛtya prāha gadgadayā girā

He worshipped him duly and seated him on a flower-seat; prostrating and bowing, he spoke in a voice choked with emotion.

Verse 11 (padma.6.240.11)

baliruvāca dhanyo'smi kṛtakṛtyosmi saphalaṁ mama jīvitam tvāmarccayitvā vipreṁdra kiṁ karomi tava priyam

Bali said: "I am blessed, my purpose is accomplished, my life has borne fruit, having worshipped you, O best of Brahmins. What may I do to please you?

Verse 12 (padma.6.240.12)

āgato'si yadarthaṁ tvaṁ māmuddiśya dvijottamaḥ tatprayacchāmi te śīghraṁ brūhi vedavidāṁ vara

Whatever purpose has brought you to me, O foremost of the twice-born, tell me at once — O best among knowers of the Veda, I shall grant it immediately."

Verse 13 (padma.6.240.13)

śaṁkara uvāca tataḥ prahṛṣṭamanasā tamuvāca mahīpatim vāmana uvāca śṛṇu rājeṁdra vakṣyāmi mamāgamanakāraṇam

Shankara said: Then, with a joyful heart, he spoke to that king. Vamana said: "Listen, O king of kings, I shall tell the reason for my coming.

Verse 14 (padma.6.240.14)

agnikuṇḍasya pṛthivīṁ dehi daityapate mama mama trivikramapadāṁ nānyadicchāmi mānada

Give me, O lord of daityas, ground the size of a fire-pit — I desire only three paces of my own stride, O giver of honor, nothing more.

Verse 15 (padma.6.240.15)

sarveṣāmeva dānānāṁ bhūmidānamanuttamam yo dadāti mahīṁ rājā viprāyākiṁcanāya vai

Of all gifts, the gift of land is the most excellent. The king who gives land to a poor Brahmin —

Verse 16 (padma.6.240.16)

even a thumb's breadth of it, becomes a lord of the earth. There exists nothing here as purifying as the gift of land.

Verse 17 (padma.6.240.17)

bhūmiṁ yaḥ pratigṛhṇāti bhūmiṁ yaśca prayacchati ubhau tau puṇyakarmmāṇau nidhane svargagāminau

Both he who receives land and he who gives it are doers of meritorious deeds, and at death both go to heaven.

Verse 18 (padma.6.240.18)

tasmādbhūmiṁ mahārāja prayaccha tripadīṁ mama etadalpāṁ mahīṁ dātuṁ mā viśaṁka mahīpate jagattrayapradānaṁ tannāma bhūpa bhaviṣyati

Therefore, O great king, give me three paces of land. Do not hesitate, O lord of the earth, to give this small piece — for it shall be equal, O king, to the gift of the three worlds."

Verse 19 (padma.6.240.19)

śaṁkara uvāca tataḥ prahṛṣṭavadanastathetyāha mahīpatiḥ tasmai mahīpradānaṁ tu kartuṁ mene vidhānataḥ

Shankara said: Then the king, his face joyful, said, "So be it," and resolved to make the gift of land to him according to due rite.

Verse 20 (padma.6.240.20)

taṁ dṛṣṭvā daityarājānaṁ tadā tasya purohitaḥ uśanā hyabravīdvākyaṁ mā rājandīyatāṁ mahīm

Seeing the lord of daityas about to do this, his priest, Ushanas Shukra, said: "O king, do not give this land —

Verse 21 (padma.6.240.21)

śukra uvāca eṣa viṣṇuḥ pareśo'tha devaiḥ saṁprārthito nṛpa vaṁcayitvā mahīṁ sarvāṁ tvattaḥ prāptumihāgataḥ

Shukra said: This is Vishnu, the Supreme Lord, entreated by the gods, O king. He has come here to deceive you and obtain the whole earth from you.

Verse 22 (padma.6.240.22)

tasmānmahī na dātavyā tasmai rājanmahātmane anyamarthaṁ prayacchasva vacanānmama bhūpate

Therefore, O king, the land must not be given to that great being. Give some other gift instead, upon my word, O lord of the earth."

Verse 23 (padma.6.240.23)

śrīśaṁkara uvāca tataḥ prahasya rājāsau taṁ guruṁ prāha dhairyyataḥ baliruvāca prītaye vāsudevasya sarvaṁ puṇyaṁ kṛtaṁ mayā

Shri Shankara said: Then, smiling, that king spoke to his teacher with steadfastness. Bali said: "Whatever merit I have earned, I have earned it for Vasudeva's pleasure alone.

Verse 24 (padma.6.240.24)

adya dhanyosmyahaṁ viṣṇuḥ svayamevāgato yadi tasya pradeyamevādya jīvitaṁ ca mahatsukham

If Vishnu himself has come today, then I am indeed blessed. To him should be given today even my very life and my greatest happiness.

Verse 25 (padma.6.240.25)

tasmādasmai prayacchāmi trilokīmapi mā ciram śrīśaṁkara uvāca ityuktvā bhūpatistasya pādau prakṣālya bhaktitaḥ

Therefore I shall give him even the three worlds, without delay." Shri Shankara said: Having spoken thus, the king washed his feet with devotion,

Verse 26 (padma.6.240.26)

vāṁcchitāṁ pradadau bhūmiṁ vāripūrvaṁ vidhānataḥ pariṇīya namaskṛtya datvā vai dakṣiṇāṁ vasu

and duly gave the desired land, pouring water to seal the gift. Having circled him, bowed, and given the sacrificial fee —

Verse 27 (padma.6.240.27)

provāca taṁ punarvipraṁ prahṛṣṭenāṁtarātmanā baliruvāca dhanyosmi kṛtakṛtyosmi tava datvā mahīṁ dvija

with a joyful heart, he spoke again to that Brahmin. Bali said: "I am blessed, my purpose accomplished, having given you this land, O twice-born one.

Verse 28 (padma.6.240.28)

yatheṣṭā tava vipreṁdra tadgṛhāṇa mahīmimām śrīśaṁkara uvāca tamuvāca nṛpaṁ viṣṇū rājaṁstava samīpataḥ

O best of Brahmins, take as much of this land as you desire." Shri Shankara said: Then Vishnu said to that king: "O king, right before your eyes —

Verse 29 (padma.6.240.29)

māpayāmi padenādya pṛthivīṁ tava paśyataḥ ityuktvā kharvarūpaṁ tadvihāya parameśvaraḥ

I shall today measure this earth with my stride." Having said this, that Supreme Lord relinquished his dwarfish form,

Verse 30 (padma.6.240.30)

trivikramavapurbhūtvā jagrāha pṛthivīmimām paṁcāśatkoṭivistīrṇa sasamudra mahīdharām

and, taking the form of Trivikrama, grasped this earth — extending fifty crore yojanas, with its mountains and oceans,

Verse 31 (padma.6.240.31)

sasāgarāṁ ca sadvīpāṁ sadevāsuramānuṣām pādenaikena vapuṣo vyakrāṁta madhusūdanaḥ

with its seas, continents, gods, demons, and men — Madhusudana strode over with a single foot of his vast body.

Verse 32 (padma.6.240.32)

uvāca daityarājeṁdra kiṁ karomīti śāśvataḥ tadvai trivikramaṁ rūpamīśvarasya mahaujasam

That eternal one said: "O king of daityas, what more shall I do?" That most splendid form of Trivikrama, of the Lord's great might —

Verse 33 (padma.6.240.33)

hitārthamapi devānāmṛṣīṇāṁ ca mahātmanām na dṛṣṭamapi śakyaṁ syādbrahmaṇaḥ śaṁkarasya ca

though existing for the welfare of the gods and the great-souled sages, could not even be beheld in full by Brahma or Shankara.

Verse 34 (padma.6.240.34)

tatpadaṁ pṛthivīṁ sarvāmākramya girije śubhe atiriktaṁ samabhavacchatayojanamāyatam

O auspicious Girija, having covered the whole earth, that foot still extended a hundred yojanas beyond it.

Verse 35 (padma.6.240.35)

divyacakṣurdadau tasmai daityarājñe sanātanaḥ tasmai saṁdarśayāmāsa svakaṁ rūpaṁ janārdanam

That eternal Lord gave divine sight to that king of daityas, and Janardana showed him his own universal form.

Verse 36 (padma.6.240.36)

tadviśvarūpaṁ devasya dṛṣṭvā daityeśvaro bali praharṣamatulaṁ lebhe sānaṁdāśru pariplutaḥ

Seeing that universal form of the god, Bali, lord of daityas, felt incomparable joy, overflowing with tears of bliss.

Verse 37 (padma.6.240.37)

dṛṣṭvā devaṁ namaskṛtya stutvā stutibhireva ca prāha gadgadayā vācā prahṛṣṭenāṁtarātmanā

Seeing the god, bowing to him, praising him with hymns, he spoke, his voice choked with emotion, his inner self overjoyed.

Verse 38 (padma.6.240.38)

baliruvāca dhanyosmi kṛtakṛtyosmi tvāṁ dṛṣṭvā parameśvaram lokatrayaṁ tvamevaitadgṛhāṇa parameśvara

Bali said: "I am blessed, my purpose accomplished, having beheld you, the Supreme Lord. Take, O Supreme Lord, these three worlds — they are yours."

Verse 39 (padma.6.240.39)

śrīśaṁkara uvāca atha sarveśvaro viṣṇurdvitīyaṁ padamavyayam ūrdhvaṁ prasārayāmāsa brahmalokāṁtamacyutaḥ

Shri Shankara said: Then the unfailing Vishnu, Lord of all, stretched his second, imperishable foot upward, up to the world of Brahma.

Verse 40 (padma.6.240.40)

sanakṣatragrahopetaṁ sarvadevasamāvṛtam padena paripūrṇo'bhūdacyutasya śubhānane

O beautiful-faced one, that world, with its stars and planets, encircled by all the gods, became entirely filled by that unfailing one's foot.

Verse 41 (padma.6.240.41)

tataḥ pitāmaho brahmacakrapadmādicihnitam pādaṁ taddevadevasya harṣasaṁkulacetasā

Then the grandsire Brahma, his heart filled with joy, approached that foot of the God of gods, marked with the discus, lotus, and other signs.

Verse 42 (padma.6.240.42)

dhanyosmīti vadanbrahmā gṛhītvā svakamaṁḍalum bhaktyā prakṣālayāmāsa tatrasaṁsthita vāriṇā

Saying "I am blessed," Brahma took his own water-pot and, with devotion, washed that foot with the water it held.

Verse 43 (padma.6.240.43)

akṣayyamabhavattoyaṁ tasya viṣṇoḥ prabhāvataḥ tattīrthaṁ meruśikhare papāta vimalaṁ jalam

By the power of that Vishnu, that water became inexhaustible. That pure, sacred water fell upon the peak of Mount Meru.

Verse 44 (padma.6.240.44)

jagataḥ pāvanārthaṁ vai caturdikṣu pravāhitam sitā cālakanandā ca cakṣurbhadrā yathākramam

For the purification of the world, it flowed in the four directions, as Sita, Alakananda, Chakshu, and Bhadra, respectively.

Verse 45 (padma.6.240.45)

tataścālakanandā ca merordakṣiṇataḥ smṛtā tridhā nāmnā tripathagā trisrotā lokapāvanī

Among them, Alakananda is remembered as flowing south of Meru — under three names, "who goes by three paths," "of three streams," the purifier of worlds.

Verse 46 (padma.6.240.46)

svarge maṁdākinī proktā tvadho bhogavatī tathā madhye vegavatī gaṁgā pāvanārthaṁ nṛṇāṁ śivā

In heaven she is called Mandakini, in the netherworld Bhogavati, and in the middle, swift-flowing Ganga, auspicious for the purification of men.

Verse 47 (padma.6.240.47)

tāṁ dṛṣṭvā merumadhye tu prasravaṁtīṁ śubhānane ātmanaḥ pāvanārthāya śirasāhamadhārayam

O beautiful-faced one, seeing her flowing down through the midst of Meru, for my own purification I bore her upon my head —

Verse 48 (padma.6.240.48)

divyaṁ varṣasahasraṁ tu dhṛtvā gaṁgājalaṁ śubham śivatvamagamaṁ devi sarvalokeṣu pūjitaḥ

and, holding that auspicious Ganga water for a thousand divine years, O Goddess, I attained my nature as Shiva, worshipped in every world.

Verse 49 (padma.6.240.49)

yo vahecchirasā gaṁgātoyaṁ viṣṇupadodbhavam prāśayedvā jagatpūjyo bhaviṣyati na saṁśayaḥ

Whoever bears upon his head the Ganga water born from Vishnu's foot, or drinks it, shall surely become worthy of the world's worship.

Verse 50 (padma.6.240.50)

gaṁgāgaṁgeti yo brūyādyojanānāṁ śatairapi mucyate sarvapāpebhyo viṣṇulokaṁ sa gacchati

Whoever says "Ganga, Ganga," even from hundreds of yojanas away, is freed from every sin and goes to the world of Vishnu.

Verse 51 (padma.6.240.51)

tato bhagīratho rājā gautamaśca mahātapāḥ tapasā pūjayitvā māṁ gaṁgārthaṁ samayācata

Then King Bhagiratha, and Gautama of great austerity, worshipped me with penance and entreated me for the sake of the Ganga.

Verse 52 (padma.6.240.52)

sarvalokahitārthāya tāṁ gaṁgāṁ vaiṣṇavīṁ śivām tayorahaṁ tāmadadāṁ prītyā devi saridvarām

For the welfare of all the worlds, O Goddess, that Vaishnavi, auspicious Ganga — I gave her, out of love, to those two, that foremost of rivers.

Verse 53 (padma.6.240.53)

gautamena samānītā gautamī tena kīrttitā bhāgīrathīti vikhyātā tena rājñā vṛtā yataḥ

Brought down by Gautama, she is called the Gautami; and, sought by King Bhagiratha, she became renowned as the Bhagirathi.

Verse 54 (padma.6.240.54)

prasaṁgātte samākhyātaṁ gaṁgājanmātyanuttamam tato nārāyaṇaḥ śrīmānbaliṁ daityapatiṁ prabhuḥ

In passing, this most excellent account of the Ganga's origin has been told to you. Then the glorious Lord Narayana [returned to] Bali, lord of daityas —

Verse 55 (padma.6.240.55)

rasātalaṁ śubhaṁ lokaṁ pradadau bhaktavatsalaḥ sarveṣāṁ dānavānāṁ tu nāgānāṁ yādasāmapi

and, loving his devotees, granted him the auspicious realm of Rasatala. Over all the danavas, the nagas, and the aquatic beings —

Verse 56 (padma.6.240.56)

rājānaṁ tu baliṁ cakre yāvadābhūtasaṁplavam pratigṛhya balerlokānbaṭuveṣeṇa daityahā

he made Bali king until the dissolution of all beings at the end of the age. Having taken Bali's heavenly realms, that slayer of daityas, in the guise of a Brahmin boy —

Verse 57 (padma.6.240.57)

maheṁdrāya dadau prītyā kāśyapo viṣṇuravyayaḥ tato devāḥ sagaṁdharvā ṛṣayaśca mahaujasaḥ

that unfailing Vishnu, son of Kashyapa, gave those realms lovingly to Mahendra. Then the gods, together with the Gandharvas and the great sages —
