went swiftly from the city, praised by all the gods. As the rain-cloud poured down, the mighty serpent-king —

Verse 46 (padma.6.245.46)

He hurled her against a stone slab; but she swiftly stood in the sky. Placing her own foot upon his head, appearing with a full face,

Verse 54 (padma.6.245.54)

apāṁsrāvaśca varuṇo manasā te maheśvara ukte mahati mīmāṁse yattadbrahmaprakāśate

The flow of the waters and Varuna arose from your mind, O great Lord. That which shines forth as Brahman is spoken of in the great Mimamsa.

Verse 114 (padma.6.245.114)

tathaiva cādhvareṣvetadetadeva mahāvrate chaṁdoge ye nabhasyetaddivye tadvāyureva tat

Likewise, this same Brahman is present in sacrifices, and in the great Mahavrata rite; that which is in the divine sky for the chanters of the Sama, that itself is the wind.

Verse 115 (padma.6.245.115)

ākaśa etadevedamoṣadhīṣvevameva ca nakṣatreṣu ca sarveṣu graheṣvetaddivākare

This same is in the ether; this same is likewise in the herbs; this same is in all the constellations, in the planets, and in the sun.

Verse 116 (padma.6.245.116)

evaṁbhūteṣvevameva brahmetyācakṣate śrutiḥ tadeva paramaṁ brahma prajñātaṁ paritomṛtam

Thus, in all beings likewise, the Shruti declares this to be Brahman. That very one is the Supreme Brahman, known fully, the essence of immortality on every side.

Verse 117 (padma.6.245.117)

hiraṇmayo'vyayo yajñaḥ śuciḥ śuciṣadityapi vaidikānyabhidheyāni tathaitānyasya na kvacit

"The golden one," "the imperishable," "the sacrifice," "the pure one," "the one who dwells in purity" — these Vedic designations of him too are nowhere adequate.

Verse 118 (padma.6.245.118)

cakṣurmayaṁ śrotramayaṁ chaṁdomaya manomayam vāṅmayaṁ paramātmānaṁ pareśaṁ śaṁsati śrutiḥ

The Shruti declares the Supreme Soul, the Supreme Lord, to be made of sight, made of hearing, made of the Vedic hymns, made of mind, made of speech.

Verse 119 (padma.6.245.119)

iti sarvopaniṣadāmarthastvaṁ kamalekṣaṇa stotuṁ na śakto'yaṁ tvāṁ tu sarvavedāṁtapāragam

Thus you are the meaning of all the Upanishads, O lotus-eyed one. This one am unable to praise you, who have crossed to the far shore of all Vedanta.

Verse 120 (padma.6.245.120)

mahāparādhametatte vatsāpaharaṇaṁ mayā kṛtaṁ tatkṣamyatāṁ nātha śaraṇāgatavatsala

This great offense against you, the abduction of the calves, committed by me — let it be forgiven, O Lord, who loves those who come to you for refuge."

Verse 121 (padma.6.245.121)

maheśvara uvāca evaṁ stutvā hariṁ vedhāḥ praṇamya ca punaḥ punaḥ vatsāndatvā punastasmai prayayau svayamālayam

Maheshvara said: Having thus praised Hari, and bowing again and again, that Ordainer, having given back the calves, went again himself to his own abode.

Verse 122 (padma.6.245.122)

hṛdi kṛtvā sadā devi bālarūpaṁ hariṁ vidhiḥ uvāsa tridaśaiḥ sārddhaṁ hṛṣṭapuṣṭo mahātapāḥ

O Goddess, ever holding in his heart that child-form of Hari, that Ordainer, of great austerity, dwelt joyful and thriving, together with the gods.

Verse 123 (padma.6.245.123)

kṛṣṇena sṛṣṭā vatsā vai pūrvavatsāstathārbhakāḥ avāpuraikyatāṁ tatra paśyatāṁ tridivaukasām

The calves created by Krishna, and the former calves and children, merged into oneness there, before the eyes of the gods.

Verse 124 (padma.6.245.124)

kṛṣṇastu vatsapālairvai prayayau naṁdagokulam tataḥ katipayāhassu gopālairyadupuṁgavaḥ

Krishna, together with the calf-herders, went to Nanda's Gokula. Then, after some days, that foremost of the Yadus, with the cowherds —

Verse 125 (padma.6.245.125)

hradaṁ gatvā'tha kāliṁdyāstatrasthaṁ sumahāviṣam sahasraśīrṣabalinaṁ nāgarājānamacyutaḥ

going to a pool of the Kalindi, that unfailing one confronted the serpent-king dwelling there, of most terrible venom, of a thousand heads, mighty —

Verse 126 (padma.6.245.126)

niṣpiṣya phalasāhasraṁ pādenaikena līlayā prāṇasaṁśayamāpannaṁ cakāra madhusūdanaḥ

crushing his thousand hoods with a single foot, with ease, Madhusudana brought him to the point of death.

Verse 127 (padma.6.245.127)

sa kāliyo labdhasaṁjñastameva śaraṇaṁ yayau rarakṣa bhagavānkṛṣṇo nāgaṁ tyaktaviṣaṁ tadā

That Kaliya, regaining consciousness, went to him alone for refuge. The Lord Krishna then protected that serpent, once he had given up his venom,

Verse 128 (padma.6.245.128)

vainateyabhayādbhītaṁ svapadenāṁkya mūrddhasu hradādvivāsayāmāsa kāliṁdyā yadupuṁgavaḥ

that one afraid of Garuda; marking his own foot upon his heads, that foremost of the Yadus banished him from the pool of the Kalindi,

Verse 129 (padma.6.245.129)

tyaktvā sa taṁ hradaṁ tūrṇaṁ putradārasamanvitaḥ namaskṛtvātha goviṁdaṁ prayayau kāliyastadā

that Kaliya, leaving that pool swiftly, together with his sons and wives, then bowed to Govinda and departed.

Verse 130 (padma.6.245.130)

viṣadagdhāstu ye pūrvaṁ tattīrasthāśca śākhinaḥ kṛṣṇena vīkṣitāstūrṇaṁ phalinaḥ puṣpiṇo'bhavan

Those trees on that bank, formerly scorched by his venom, being looked upon by Krishna, at once became laden with fruit and flowers.

Verse 131 (padma.6.245.131)

atha kālena kaumāramavāpya madhusūdanaḥ govṛṁdaṁ pālayāmāsa sarvadevamayaḥ prabhuḥ

Then, in time, having attained boyhood, Madhusudana, that Lord who is of the essence of all the gods, tended the herds of cattle.

Verse 132 (padma.6.245.132)

svasamānavayobhistu gopālaistu yadūttamaḥ vṛṁdāvane manoramye sarāmo vicacāra ha

Together with cowherd boys of his own age, that foremost of the Yadus, together with Rama, wandered in delightful Vrindavana.

Verse 133 (padma.6.245.133)

tatra hatvā mahāghoraṁ sarparūpaṁ mahāsuram apahatya mahākāyaṁ merumaṁdāragauravam

There, having slain a most terrible great demon in serpent form, having removed that huge body, weighty as Mount Meru or Mandara,

Verse 134 (padma.6.245.134)

dhenukasya vanaṁ prāpya tālahiṁtālagahvaram praviśyatadvanaṁramyaṁphalitaṁtālagahvaram dhenukaṁ parvatākāraṁ khararūpadharaṁ sadā

reaching the forest of Dhenuka, thick with palm and hintala trees, entering that delightful, fruit-laden forest — Dhenuka, of mountain-like form, ever bearing the form of a donkey —

Verse 135 (padma.6.245.135)

pādau gṛhya samutkṣipya tālena vijaghāna ha tatkṣaṇādeva tatpālāstadaṁte remire tadā

seizing him by the legs, lifting him up, he struck him with a palm tree. Instantly, at his end, his companions there rejoiced.

Verse 136 (padma.6.245.136)

niṣkramya tadvanāttūrṇaṁ bhāṁḍīraṁ vaṭamāgatāḥ tatra te rāmakṛṣṇābhyāṁ cikrīḍurbālalīlayā

Emerging from that forest, swiftly they came to the Bhandira banyan tree. There they played childish games together with Rama and Krishna.

Verse 137 (padma.6.245.137)

gopaveṣeṇa tatrāgātpralaṁbonāma rākṣasaḥ rāmaṁ svapṛṣṭhamāropya yayau tūrṇaṁ nabhastalam

In the guise of a cowherd, a rakshasa named Pralamba came there. Placing Rama on his own back, he swiftly went into the sky.

Verse 138 (padma.6.245.138)

matvā taṁ rākṣasaṁ rāmo muṣṭinā tasya mūrddhani tāḍayāmāsa roṣeṇa vihvalāṁgastato'patat

Recognizing him as a rakshasa, Rama, in fury, struck him upon the head with his fist; he, his body writhing, then fell.

Verse 139 (padma.6.245.139)

rākṣasenaiva rūpeṇa vinadanbhairavaṁ svanam bhinnaśīrṣatanustatra mamāra rudhirokṣitaḥ

In his very rakshasa form, uttering a terrible roar, his head and body shattered, he died there, drenched in blood.

Verse 140 (padma.6.245.140)

tataḥ pradoṣasamayegovraje naṁdanaṁdanaḥ uvāsagopakanyābhiḥ krīḍankaumodavarcase

Then, at twilight, in the cow-settlement, Nanda's delight, playing with the cowherd maidens, dwelt in joyful splendor.

Verse 141 (padma.6.245.141)

ariṣṭanāmā daityeśo gatvā tatra vṛṣākṛtiḥ kṛṣṇaṁ haṁtuṁ samāgatya jagarja ca mahāsvanam

A lord of demons named Arishta, going there, of bull's form, coming to slay Krishna, roared with a great sound.

Verse 142 (padma.6.245.142)

taṁ dṛṣṭvā vidrutāḥ sarve gopālā bhayapīḍitāḥ kṛṣṇo'pi dṛṣṭvā taṁ raudramāgataṁ danujādhipam

Seeing him, all the cowherds fled, stricken with fear. Krishna too, seeing that terrible lord of demons approach —

Verse 143 (padma.6.245.143)

tālavṛkṣaṁ samutpāṭya śṛṁgamadhye vyapīḍayat sa tu bhagnaśiraḥ śṛṁgo vamanvai rudhiraṁ bahu

uprooting a palm tree, struck him between his horns. He, his head and horns broken, vomiting much blood,

Verse 144 (padma.6.245.144)

papāta bhīmavegena ninadaṁstyaktajīvitaḥ itthaṁ hatvā mahākāyamariṣṭaṁ danujādhipam

fell with terrible force, roaring, his life given up. Having thus slain the huge-bodied lord of demons, Arishta,

Verse 145 (padma.6.245.145)

āhūya gopabālāṁśca tatraivovāsa govraje tataḥ katipayāhassu keśī nāma mahāsuraḥ

calling back the cowherd boys, he dwelt there itself in the cow-settlement. Then, after some days, a great demon named Keshi —

Verse 146 (padma.6.245.146)

hayakāyena goviṁdaṁ haṁtuṁ vrajamupāyayau sa gatvā govrajaṁ ramyamuccairheṣāmathākarot

in the body of a horse, came to the settlement to slay Govinda. Going to that delightful cow-settlement, he neighed loudly.

Verse 147 (padma.6.245.147)

tena śabdena mahatā pūritaṁ bhuvanatrayam bhītāḥ sarve suragaṇāḥ śaṁkamānā yugakṣayam

By that great sound the three worlds were filled. All the hosts of gods were terrified, suspecting the end of the age.

Verse 148 (padma.6.245.148)

tatrasthā mohitāḥ sarve gopāgopyaśca vihvalāḥ labdhasaṁjñāstu te sarve vidrutāśca samaṁtataḥ gopyastu śaraṇaṁ jagmuḥ kṛṣṇaṁ trāhīti cābruvan na bhetavyaṁ na bhetavyamityāha bhaktavatsalaḥ

All the cowherds and cowherd women there, bewildered, distraught. Then, regaining their senses, all fled in every direction. The cowherd women went for refuge to Krishna, saying, "Save us!" "Do not fear, do not fear," said that Lord who loves his devotees.

Verse 149 (padma.6.245.149)

samāśvāsya tatastūrṇaṁ muṣṭinā vāsavānujaḥ tāḍayāmāsa śirasi tasya daityasya līlayā

Reassuring them, then swiftly, that younger brother of Indra struck, with his fist, the head of that demon, with ease.

Verse 150 (padma.6.245.150)

vibhinnadaṁtanetro'sau vinanāda mahāsvanam mahāśilāṁ samutkṣipya tasyāṁge vai nyapātayat

His teeth and eyes shattered, he roared with a great sound. Lifting up a great boulder, he cast it upon his body.

Verse 151 (padma.6.245.151)

sa tu cūrṇitasarvāṁgo ninadanbhairavaṁ svanam papāta sahasā bhūmau mamāra ca mahāsuraḥ

His whole body crushed, roaring a terrible sound, he suddenly fell to the ground, and that great demon died.

Verse 152 (padma.6.245.152)

keśinaṁ nihataṁ dṛṣṭvā divi devagaṇā bhṛśam mumucuḥ puṣpavarṣāṇi sādhusādhviti cābruvan

Seeing Keshi slain, the hosts of gods in heaven greatly rejoiced, and rained down showers of flowers, saying, "Well done, well done!"

Verse 153 (padma.6.245.153)

itthaṁ śiśutve vai daityānharirhatvā balotkaṭān sa mumoda sukhenaiva balarāmasamanvitaḥ

Thus, in his childhood, having slain the mighty demons, Hari rejoiced happily, together with Balarama.

Verse 154 (padma.6.245.154)

iṁdīvaradalaśyāmaḥ padmapatranibhekṣaṇaḥ pītāṁbaradharaḥ sragvī vanamālāvibhūṣitaḥ

Dark as a blue-lotus petal, with eyes like lotus leaves, clad in yellow, garlanded, adorned with a forest-garland,

Verse 155 (padma.6.245.155)

kaustubhodbhāsitoraskaścitramālyānulepanaḥ vicitrābharaṇairyuktaḥ kuṁḍalābhyāṁ virājitaḥ

wearing a garland of tulasi, marked with a musk tilaka, his hair braided, glossy, dark, and curling,

Verse 157 (padma.6.245.157)

baddhairnānāvidhaiḥ puṣpairbarhibarhāvataṁsakaḥ raktāraviṁdasadṛśa hastapādatalādharaḥ

adorned with various tied flowers, a peacock feather as his crest-ornament, his palms and soles like red lotuses,

Verse 158 (padma.6.245.158)

pakṣamadhyagaśītāṁśu kalaṁkabhrūlatānanaḥ hāranūpurakeyūraiḥ kaṭakābhyāṁ virājitaḥ

his face like the moon amid its fortnight, with brows like creepers, resplendent with necklace, anklets, armlets, and bracelets —

Verse 159 (padma.6.245.159)

vṛṁdāvane mahāramye phalapuṣpavirājite ramyaṁ ninādayanveṇuṁ tatrāste yadunaṁdanaḥ

in that most delightful Vrindavana, resplendent with fruit and flowers, playing a sweet melody on his flute, there dwelt that delight of the Yadus,

Verse 160 (padma.6.245.160)

avadhīrita kaṁdarpakoṭilāvaṇyamacyutam sarvāgopastriyo dṛṣṭvā manmathāstreṇa pīḍitāḥ

that unfailing one whose beauty surpassed a hundred million Kamadevas. All the cowherd women, seeing him, tormented by the arrows of Kama —

Verse 161 (padma.6.245.161)

purā maharṣayaḥ sarve daṁḍakāraṇyavāsinaḥ dṛṣṭvā rāmaṁ hariṁ tatra bhoktumaicchatsuvigraham

Formerly, all the great sages dwelling in the Dandaka forest, seeing Rama, Hari, there, of beautiful form, wished to enjoy union with him —

Verse 162 (padma.6.245.162)

te sarve strītvamāpannāḥ samudbhūtāstu gokule hariṁ saṁprāpya kāmena tato muktā bhavārṇavāt

all of them, taking female birth, were born in Gokula; obtaining Hari through desire, they were then freed from the ocean of worldly existence —

Verse 163 (padma.6.245.163)

krodhenaiva yathā daityāḥ sametya madhusūdanam nidhanaṁ prāpya saṁgrāme hatā muktimavāpnuyuḥ

just as demons, through anger alone, engaging Madhusudana, attaining death in battle, slain, attain liberation.

Verse 164 (padma.6.245.164)

kāmakrodhau nṛṇāṁ loke nirayasyaiva kāraṇam hariṁ sametya bhāvena muktā gopyaḥ suradviṣaḥ

Desire and anger, among men in this world, are the very cause of hell; yet through devotion, engaging Hari, the cowherd women were freed, as were the enemies of the gods.

Verse 165 (padma.6.245.165)

Verse 167 (padma.6.245.167)

tyaktvā patīnsutānbadhūṁstyaktvā lajjāṁ kulaṁ svakam jagatpatiṁ samājagmuḥ kaṁdarpaśarapīḍitāḥ

leaving husbands, sons, and daughters-in-law, leaving shame and their own family, came to the Lord of the world, tormented by the arrows of Kama.

Verse 168 (padma.6.245.168)

sametya gopyaḥ sarvāstu bhujairāliṁgya keśavam bubhujuścādharaṁ devyaḥ sudhāmṛtamivāmarāḥ

Meeting him, all the cowherd women, embracing Keshava with their arms, drank his lips, as the gods drink the nectar of immortality.

Verse 169 (padma.6.245.169)

tābhiḥ sarvābhirātmeśaḥ krīḍayāmāsa govraje tenāpi tāḥ striyaḥ sarvā remire nirbhayā vraje

That Lord of the self played with all of them in the cow-settlement. And with him too, all those women delighted, fearlessly, in the settlement.

Verse 170 (padma.6.245.170)

ityevaṁ ramayāmāsurahanyahani keśavam vṛṁdāvane manoramye kāliṁdīpuline tathā

Thus, day after day, they delighted Keshava, in delightful Vrindavana, and likewise on the sandbanks of the Kalindi.

Verse 171 (padma.6.245.171)

pārvatyuvāca dharmasaṁrakṣaṇārthāya jagatyāmavatīrya saḥ paradārābhigamanaṁ kathaṁ kuryājjanārdanaḥ

Parvati said: "Having descended into the world for the protection of dharma, how could Janardana engage in union with the wives of others?"

Verse 172 (padma.6.245.172)

rudra uvāca svaśarīre pareṣvaṁgabhedo nāsti śubhānane sarvaṁ jagacca tasyāṁgaṁ pṛthagatra na vidyate

Rudra said: "O beautiful-faced one, there is no distinction of limbs between his own body and others' — the entire universe is his limb; nothing here exists separately.

Verse 173 (padma.6.245.173)

strīpuṁbhedo na vai tasya puruṣasya mahātmanaḥ naisargikasya bhartṛtvādātmeśatvājjagatpateḥ

For that great-souled Person there is indeed no distinction of male and female, on account of his innate lordship, his being the Lord of the self, the ruler of the world.

Verse 174 (padma.6.245.174)

tathāpahṛtapāpmatva sāmarthyādvyāpinaḥ prabhoḥ doṣo'tra nāsti subhage devasya paramātmanaḥ

Likewise, on account of his power of being untouched by sin, that all-pervading Lord — O fortunate one, there is no fault here in that god, the Supreme Soul."

Verse 175 (padma.6.245.175)

vasiṣṭha uvāca evamuktvā tu girijāṁ rudraḥ śrītripurāntakaḥ kṛṣṇasyaśeṣaṁ caritamākhyātuṁ saṁpracakrame

Vasishtha said: Having said this to Girija, Rudra, the destroyer of the Triple City, began to relate the remaining story of Krishna.

Verse 176 (padma.6.245.176)

rudra uvāca śaratkāle tu saṁprāpte naṁdagopapurogamāḥ gopā mahotsavaṁ kartumārabdhāstridaśāṁpateḥ

Rudra said: When the autumn season arrived, the cowherds, with Nanda at their head, began to hold a great festival for the lord of the gods.

Verse 177 (padma.6.245.177)

tadutsavaṁ tu goviṁdo nivāryātha śatakratoḥ govarddhanādrirājasya kārayāmāsa vīryavān

Govinda, that valorous one, then, preventing that festival for Indra, had them perform one for Govardhana, king of mountains, instead.

Verse 178 (padma.6.245.178)

tataḥ kruddhaḥ sahasrākṣo naṁdagopasya govraje vavarṣa ca mahāvṛṣṭiṁ saptarātraṁ niraṁtaram

Then Indra, enraged, rained down a great downpour on Nanda's cow-settlement, unceasingly, for seven nights.

Verse 179 (padma.6.245.179)

govarddhanaṁ samutpāṭya mahāśailaṁ janārdanaḥ gavāṁ saṁrakṣaṇārthāya dhārayāmāsa līlayā

Janardana, uprooting Govardhana, that great mountain, held it aloft with ease, for the protection of the cows.

Verse 180 (padma.6.245.180)

tasyacchāyāṁ gireḥ prāpya gopāgopyaśca suvrate avasaṁśca sukhenaiva harmyāṁtaragatā iva

Reaching that mountain's shade, O one of good vows, the cowherds and cowherd women dwelt there in comfort, as if within a mansion.

Verse 181 (padma.6.245.181)

tataḥ śakraḥ sahasrākṣo bhītaḥ saṁbhrāṁtacetasā vārayāmāsa tadvarṣaṁ yayau naṁdasya tadvrajam

Then Indra, terrified, his mind confounded, stopped that rain, and went to Nanda's settlement.

Verse 182 (padma.6.245.182)

kṛṣṇo'pi taṁ mahāśailaṁ yathāpūrvaṁ niveśayat gopavṛddhāśca te sarve naṁdagopapurogamāḥ

Krishna too set that great mountain back as it was before. All the elder cowherds, with Nanda at their head,

Verse 183 (padma.6.245.183)

paripūjya ca goviṁdaṁ paraṁ vismayamāyayuḥ tataḥ śatakraturdevaḥ sametya madhusūdanam tuṣṭāva prāṁjalirbhūtvā harṣagadgadayā girā

duly worshipped Govinda and attained the greatest wonder. Then the god Indra, coming to Madhusudana, with joined palms, praised him in a voice choked with joy.

Verse 184 (padma.6.245.184)

indra uvāca namaste puṁḍarīkākṣa sarvajñāti trivikrama triguṇātīta sarveśa viśvasyātmannamostu te

Indra said: "Homage to you, lotus-eyed one, all-knower, Trivikrama! Beyond the three gunas, Lord of all, self of the universe — homage to you!

Verse 185 (padma.6.245.185)

tvaṁ yajñastvaṁ vaṣaṭkārastvamoṅkāraḥ kraturhaviḥ tvameva sarvadevānāṁ pitā mātā ca keśava

You are the sacrifice, you are the exclamation Vashat, you are Om, the ritual, the oblation. You alone, O Keshava, are the father and mother of all the gods.

Verse 186 (padma.6.245.186)

agre hiraṇyagarbhastvaṁ bhūtasya samavarttata tvamevaikaḥ patirasi puruṣastvaṁ hiraṇmayaḥ

In the beginning, you, as Hiranyagarbha, arose alone, of all created beings. You alone are the lord; you are the golden Person.

Verse 187 (padma.6.245.187)

pṛthivīṁ dyāmimāṁ deva tvameva dhṛtavānasi ātmadaḥ phalado yaśca syādevaṁ jagadīśvara

O god, you alone have upheld this earth and heaven. You are the giver of the self, the giver of the fruit of action — thus you are, O Lord of the world.

Verse 188 (padma.6.245.188)

avāptaṁ tacca tridaśaiḥ prakāśaṁ jagatāṁpateḥ amṛtaṁ caiva mṛtyuśca chāyā tava sanātana

That radiance of yours, Lord of the worlds, is attained by the gods. Immortality, and death too, are your shadow, O eternal one.

Verse 189 (padma.6.245.189)

tasmai devāya bhavate vidhema haviṣā vayam hemavaṁta ime yasya samudbhūtā hiraṇmayāḥ

To that god, to you, may we offer worship with our oblation. These golden Himavat ranges arose from him;

Verse 190 (padma.6.245.190)

samudrā rasanā yasya vāhastasyaiva keśava imā diśaḥ pratidiśo vāyuryasya tavāvyaya

the oceans are his girdle-string, and his steeds are his own, O Keshava; these directions and intermediate directions, and the wind, are yours, O imperishable one.

Verse 191 (padma.6.245.191)

tasmai devāya bhavate vidhema haviṣā vayam yena tvayā samārūḍhā pṛthivī varddhatā punaḥ

To that god, to you, may we offer worship with our oblation. By whom this earth, having been raised up, was made to grow again;

Verse 192 (padma.6.245.192)

svarlokaḥ staṁbhito yena tvayā brahmanmaheśvara tvamaṁtarikṣe rajasovasānaḥ sarvagovyayaḥ

by whom, O Brahman, O great Lord, the heavenly world was propped up; you, in the mid-space, dwelling in the realm of dust, all-pervading, imperishable.

Verse 193 (padma.6.245.193)

tasmai devāya bhavate vidhema haviṣā vayam yaṁ kraṁdasi rājamāne taptabhāse guṇānvite

To that god, to you, may we offer worship with our oblation. You whom heaven and earth, shining, of blazing splendor, endowed with qualities —

Verse 194 (padma.6.245.194)

abhyaikṣetāṁ ca manasā avaśyaṁ śrīśca sarvadā yatrāsti sūra udito vibhāti parame pade

regarded with their minds, necessarily, and Shri too, always; where the risen sun shines forth, in the supreme abode —

Verse 195 (padma.6.245.195)

tasmai devāya bhavate vidhema haviṣā vayam yadāpo bṛhatīrviśva brahmamāyaṁ janārdanāḥ

To that god, to you, may we offer worship with our oblation. When the vast waters, containing the entire manifestation of Brahman —

Verse 196 (padma.6.245.196)

garbhaṁ dadhānāḥ sarge'tra janayaṁtīraghaughakṛt samavartata devānāmasureko'vyayo vibhuḥ

bearing the cosmic embryo, giving birth in this creation to that doer who removes the flood of sin — there arose, alone, imperishable, all-pervading, the one who is Lord of the gods —

Verse 197 (padma.6.245.197)

tasmai devāya bhavate vidhema haviṣā vayam yā āpo mahinā dakṣaṁ paryapaśyatprajāpatim yajñaṁ dadhānāstatrādau janayaṁtīrhaviḥ pumān yo deveṣveka evāsīdadhidevaḥ parātparaḥ

To that god, to you, may we offer worship with our oblation. He whom the waters, by their might, beheld as Prajapati, the capable one; bearing the sacrifice, giving birth there at the beginning to the oblation, the Person; he who alone was, among the gods, the supreme deity, higher than the highest —

Verse 198 (padma.6.245.198)

tasmai devāya bhavate vidhema haviṣā vayam mā no hiṁsījjanitā yaḥ pṛthivyā avyayaḥ pumān

To that god, to you, may we offer worship with our oblation. May he not harm us, he who is the imperishable Person, begetter of the earth,

Verse 199 (padma.6.245.199)

yo vā divaṁ satyadharmā jajānāvyaya īśvaraḥ yaścaṁdro bṛhatīrapo jajāna sakalaṁ jagat

or he, of true dharma, the imperishable Lord, who begot heaven; he who, as the moon, begot the vast waters and the entire universe.

Verse 200 (padma.6.245.200)

tasmai devāya bhavate vidhema haviṣā vayam etāni viśvajātāni babhūva paritā prabho

To that god, to you, may we offer worship with our oblation. All these created things came to be surrounded by you, O Lord —

Verse 201 (padma.6.245.201)

tvadutpannaprajādhyakṣa bhaviṣyadbhūtamacyutaḥ yajāmastvāṁ ca yatkāmāstanno astu samāsataḥ

O overseer of creatures born from you, O unfailing one who is the future and the past — we worship you; whatever we desire, may that be ours entirely.

Verse 202 (padma.6.245.202)

trayāṇāṁ patayaḥ syāma tava kāruṇyavīkṣaṇāt hiraṇmayākhyaḥ puruṣo hiraṇyaśmaśrukeśavān

May we become lords of the three worlds through your compassionate glance. The Person called golden, with golden beard and hair —

Verse 203 (padma.6.245.203)

āpraṇakhātsarvaṁ hiraṇyaṁ savitā tu hiraṇyabhāk asau sarvagato brahmā yastvāditye vyavasthitaḥ

entirely golden even to his nails, that Savitri partaking of gold; he, all-pervading Brahman, who abides in the sun —

Verse 204 (padma.6.245.204)

tadvai devasya saviturvareṇyaṁ bharga uttamam sadā dhīmahi te rūpaṁ dhiyo yo naḥ prabhāti hi

that excellent, most desirable radiance of god Savitri — may we ever meditate upon it, your form, which illumines our thoughts.

Verse 205 (padma.6.245.205)

namaste puṁḍarīkākṣa śrīśa sarveśa keśava vedāṁtavedya yajñeśa yajñarūpa namostu te

Homage to you, lotus-eyed one, Lord of Shri, Lord of all, Keshava! Knowable through Vedanta, Lord of sacrifice, form of sacrifice — homage to you!

Verse 206 (padma.6.245.206)

namaste vāsudevāya gopaveṣāya te namaḥ tatsarvadhvaṁsanādeva aparādhaṁ mayā kṛtam

Homage to you, Vasudeva! Homage to you in the guise of a cowherd! For attempting the destruction of all that protection you gave, an offense has been committed by me —

Verse 207 (padma.6.245.207)

tatkṣamyatāṁ jagannātha ghṛṇābdhe puruṣottama alpenaiva hi kālena jahi kaṁsaṁ durāsadam devānāṁ hi hitaṁ kṛtvā sukhevasthāya medinīm

let that be forgiven, O Lord of the world, O ocean of compassion, Purushottama. In a very short time indeed, slay that unassailable Kamsa; having done good for the gods, may the earth abide in happiness."

Verse 208 (padma.6.245.208)

mahādeva uvāca iti saṁstutya goviṁdaṁ sarvadeveśvaro hariḥ sudhāmṛtenābhyaṣiṁcaddivyāṁbaravibhūṣaṇaiḥ

Mahadeva said: Having thus praised Govinda, that Lord of all the gods, Hari, was anointed by him with the nectar of immortality, and with divine garments and ornaments.

Verse 209 (padma.6.245.209)

arcayitvā tu deveśaṁ jagāma tridivaṁ punaḥ gopavṛddhāśca gopyaśca dṛṣṭvā tatra śatakratum

Having thus worshipped the Lord of gods, he went again to heaven. The elder cowherds and the cowherd women, seeing Indra there,

Verse 210 (padma.6.245.210)

tena te pūjitāścaiva praharṣamatulaṁ yayuḥ rāmakṛṣṇau mahāvīryau divyābharaṇabhūṣitau

duly honored by him, attained incomparable joy. Rama and Krishna, both of great valor, adorned with divine ornaments,

Verse 211 (padma.6.245.211)

naṁdasya govraje ramye susukhenaiva tasthatuḥ etasminnaṁtare devi nārado munisattamaḥ

dwelt in Nanda's delightful cow-settlement in great happiness. Meanwhile, O Goddess, Narada, that foremost of sages,

Verse 212 (padma.6.245.212)

sahasā mathurāṁ gatvā kaṁsasyāṁtikamāviśat rājñā saṁpūjitāstatra samāsīnaḥ śubhāsane

suddenly going to Mathura, entered Kamsa's presence. Duly honored by the king, seated there on an auspicious seat,

Verse 213 (padma.6.245.213)

sarvaṁ vijñāpayāmāsa ceṣṭitaṁ śārṅgiṇastadā devatānāṁ samudyogaṁ janma vai keśavasya ca

he then told him everything, the doings of the wielder of the Sharnga bow — the endeavor of the gods, and the birth of Keshava,

Verse 214 (padma.6.245.214)

tathā ca vasudevena putranikṣepaṇaṁ vraje nidhanaṁ rākṣasānāṁ ca sarparājavivāsanam

and likewise Vasudeva's placing of the son in the cow-settlement, the death of the rakshasas, and the banishment of the serpent-king,

Verse 215 (padma.6.245.215)

dhāraṇaṁ girivaryasya śatakratusamāgamam nivedayitvā kaṁsasya sarvaṁ niravaśeṣataḥ

the holding aloft of that excellent mountain, and the meeting with Indra — having reported to Kamsa everything, without omission,

Verse 216 (padma.6.245.216)

prayayau brahmabhavanaṁ pūjitastena rakṣasā kaṁsaḥ samudvignamanā maṁtribhiḥ pariveṣṭitaḥ

he went to Brahma's abode, having been honored by that demon. Kamsa, his mind troubled, surrounded by his ministers,

Verse 217 (padma.6.245.217)

maṁtrayāmāsa taiḥ sākamātmano nidhanaṁ prati tatra buddhimatāṁ śreṣṭhamakrūraṁ dharmavatsalam uvācātmahitaṁ kāryaṁ dānaveṁdro mahābalaḥ

took counsel with them concerning his own death. There, that lord of demons, mighty, spoke to Akrura, foremost among the wise, devoted to dharma, of the deed for his own welfare.

Verse 218 (padma.6.245.218)

kaṁsa uvāca madbhayāttridaśāḥ sarve śatakratupurogamāḥ viṣṇoḥ samīpamāgatya bhayārttāḥ śaraṇaṁ gatāḥ

Kamsa said: "Out of fear of me, all the gods, with Indra at their head, going to Vishnu's presence, terrified, took refuge.

Verse 219 (padma.6.245.219)

sa teṣāmabhayaṁ datvā bhagavānbhūtabhāvanaḥ utpanno devakīgarbhe māṁ haṁtuṁ madhusūdanaḥ

He, the Lord, source of all beings, granting them fearlessness, was born in Devaki's womb, that Madhusudana, to slay me.

Verse 220 (padma.6.245.220)

vasudevo'pi duṣṭātmā vaṁcayitvā tu māṁ niśi putraṁ nikṣiptavāngehe naṁdasya sudurātmanaḥ

And Vasudeva, that wicked soul, deceiving me at night, placed his son in the house of Nanda, that most evil-souled one.

Verse 221 (padma.6.245.221)

bālenaiva durādharṣo vijaghāna mahāsurān māṁ haṁtumapi saṁnaddho bhavedeva na saṁśayaḥ

"Even as a mere child, that unassailable one has slain great demons. That he is prepared even to slay me — of this there is no doubt.

Verse 222 (padma.6.245.222)

He indeed cannot be slain even by the gods and demons together with Indra. He must be slain by strategy alone — by bringing him here, by me —

Verse 223 (padma.6.245.223)

madotkaṭaistu mātaṁgairmallaiśca varavājibhiḥ yenakenāpyupāyena haṁtuṁ śakyamihaiva tu

by rutting elephants, or by wrestlers, or by excellent horses — by whatever means possible, he can be slain right here.

Verse 224 (padma.6.245.224)

tasmāttvaṁ govrajaṁ gatvā kṛṣṇaṁ rāmaṁ ca yādava sarvāngopālavṛddhāṁśca naṁdagopapurogamān upabhoktuṁ dhanuryāgāmihānaya yadūttama

Therefore, O Yadava, going to the cow-settlement, bring here Krishna and Rama, and all the elder cowherds, with Nanda at their head, O foremost of the Yadus, to attend the bow-sacrifice."

Verse 225 (padma.6.245.225)

mahādeva uvāca tathetyuktvā yaduśreṣṭho rathamāruhya vīryavān prayayau gokulaṁ ramyaṁ kṛṣṇaṁ saṁdarśanotsukaḥ

Mahadeva said: "So be it," said that foremost of the Yadus, and, mounting his chariot, that valorous one went to delightful Gokula, eager to see Krishna.
