Yudhishthira said: Which Ekadashi falls in the dark fortnight of Vaishakha? Salutations to you, O Vasudeva; tell me its glory.

durbhagā yā karotyenāṁ sā strī saubhāgyamāpnuyāt lokānāṁ caiva sarveṣāṁ bhuktimuktipradāyinī
Even an unfortunate woman who observes this vow attains good fortune. It bestows upon all worlds both worldly enjoyment and liberation.
Verse 5 (padma.6.48.5)
sarvapāpaharā nṝṇāṁ garbhavāsanikṛṁtanī varūthinyā vratenaiva māṁdhātā svargatiṁ gataḥ
It removes all the sins of men and cuts short the dwelling in the womb [rebirth]. By the very power of the Varuthini vow, King Mandhata attained heaven.
Verse 6 (padma.6.48.6)
dhuṁdhumārādayaścānye rājāno bahavastathā brahmakapālanirmukto babhūva bhagavānbhavaḥ
Dhundhumara and many other kings likewise went to heaven by this vow. By its power the Lord Shiva too was freed from the skull [the sin of killing Brahma].
Verse 7 (padma.6.48.7)

A man who performs austerity for ten thousand years, or who gives a mountain of gold at Kurukshetra during a solar eclipse - one who observes the Varuthini vow obtains the very same fruit.

O best of kings, this pure and holy Ekadashi destroys the gravest sins, and bestows upon those who observe it both worldly enjoyment and liberation.
Verse 10 (padma.6.48.10)
aśvadānānnṛpaśreṣṭha gajadānaṁ viśiṣyate gajadānādbhūmidānaṁ tiladānaṁ tato'dhikam
O best of kings, greater than the gift of a horse is the gift of an elephant; greater than the gift of an elephant is the gift of land, and greater still is the gift of sesame.
Verse 11 (padma.6.48.11)
Greater than that is the gift of gold, and greater than the gift of gold is the gift of food. There has never been, nor shall there ever be, a gift greater than the gift of food.
Verse 12 (padma.6.48.12)
pitṛdevamanuṣyāṇāṁ tṛptirannena jāyate tatsamaṁ kavibhiḥ proktaṁ kanyādānaṁ nṛpottama
By food alone are the ancestors, the gods, and men satisfied. O best of kings, the sages have declared the gift of a daughter in marriage to be its equal.
Verse 13 (padma.6.48.13)
dhenudānaṁ ca tattulyamityāha bhagavānsvayam proktebhyaḥ sarvadānebhyo vidyādānaṁ viśiṣyate
The gift of a cow is likewise its equal, so the Lord himself has said. Among all these gifts described, the gift of knowledge is the most excellent.
Verse 14 (padma.6.48.14)

yaśca gṛhṇāti lobhena kanyāṁ krītvā ca taddhanam so'nyajanmani rājeṁdra oturbhavati niścitam

śākaṁ madhu parānnaṁ ca punarbhojana maithune vaiṣṇavo vratakartā ca daśamyāṁ daśa varjayet
greens, honey, food given by another, and eating a second time and sexual union - the Vaishnava observer of the vow should renounce these ten things on the day of Dashami.
Verse 20 (padma.6.48.20)

exercise, travel, eating a second time, sexual union, riding upon a bull's back, and eating lentils - all of these should be renounced on the day of Dvadashi.
Verse 23 (padma.6.48.23)
anena vidhinā rājanvihitā yairvarūthinī sarvapāpakṣayaṁ kṛtvā dadyātprāṁte'kṣayāṁ gatim rātrau jāgaraṇaṁ kṛtvā pūjito madhusūdanaḥ

Freed from all sin, they attain the supreme state. Therefore those who fear sin should observe this vow with every effort.
Verse 25 (padma.6.48.25)
kṣapāritanayādbhīto naraḥ kuryādvarūthinīm paṭhanācchravaṇādrājangosahasraphalaṁ labhet sarvapāpavinirmukto viṣṇuloke mahīyate
A man, fearful of the terrors of future births, should perform the vow of Varuthini. O king, by merely reading or hearing it, one obtains the fruit of donating a thousand cows; freed from all sin, he is honored in the realm of Vishnu.
