Uttara Khanda · Chapter 51
Nirjala Ekadashi of Jyeshtha Shukla
Verse 1 (padma.6.51.1)
yudhiṣṭhira uvāca- aparāyāśca māhātmyaṁ śrutaṁ sarvaṁ janārdana jyeṣṭhasya śuklapakṣe tu syādyā tāṁ vada mānada
Yudhishthira said: O Janardana, the entire glory of Apara has now been heard. O bestower of honor, now tell me the Ekadashi that falls in the bright fortnight of Jyeshtha.
Verse 2 (padma.6.51.2)
śrīkṛṣṇa uvāca- enāṁ vakṣyati dharmātmā vyāsaḥ satyavatīsutaḥ sarvaśāstrārthatattvajño vedavedāṁgapāragaḥ
Sri Krishna said: This shall be told by the righteous Vyasa himself, the son of Satyavati, who knows the essence of all scriptures and is versed in the Vedas and Vedangas.
Verse 3 (padma.6.51.3)
yudhiṣṭhira uvāca- śrutā me mānavā dharmā vāsiṣṭhāśca śrutā mayā dvaipāyana yathāvattvaṁ vaiṣṇavānvaktumarhasi
Yudhishthira said: O Dvaipayana, I have heard the human dharma and the dharma of Vasishtha; now please tell me the Vaishnava dharma just as it truly is.
Verse 4 (padma.6.51.4)
śrīvedavyāsa uvāca - śrutāstu mānavā dharmā vaidikāśca śrutāstvayā kalau yuge na śakyaṁte te vai kartuṁ narādhipa
Sri Vedavyasa said: You have heard the human dharma and the Vedic dharma too, but, O king of men, in the Kali age it is not possible to observe all of those.
Verse 5 (padma.6.51.5)
sukhopāyamalpadhanamalpakleśaṁ mahāphalam purāṇānāṁ ca sarveṣāṁ sārabhūtaṁ mahāmate
That which is easy to perform, requires little wealth and little hardship yet bestows great fruit, and is the very essence of all the Puranas - that, O great-minded one, I shall tell you.
Verse 6 (padma.6.51.6)
ekādaśyāṁ na bhuṁjīta pakṣayorubhayorapi dvādaśyāṁ tu śucirbhūtvā puṣpaiḥ saṁpūjya keśavam
On Ekadashi one should not eat, in either fortnight [bright or dark]. On Dvadashi, having become pure and having worshipped Keshava with flowers,
Verse 7 (padma.6.51.7)
annaṁ bhuṁjīta satkṛtya paścādviprapuraḥsaram sūtake'pi na bhoktavyaṁ nāśauce ca janādhipa
one should eat, having first duly honored and fed the brahmins. O lord of men, one should not eat even during birth-impurity or death-impurity.
Verse 8 (padma.6.51.8)
yāvajjīvaṁ vratamidaṁ karttavyaṁ puruṣarṣabha svargatiṁ prāptumicchadbhiratra naivāsti saṁśayaḥ
O bull among men, this vow should be observed for one's whole life. For those who desire to attain heaven, there is no doubt about this.
Verse 9 (padma.6.51.9)
Even the greatest sinners, the ill-behaved, the most wicked, and those devoid of dharma - if they do not eat on Ekadashi, they do not go into the presence of Yama.
Verse 10 (padma.6.51.10)
iti tadvacanaṁ śrutvā kaṁpito'śvatthapatravat bhīmaseno mahābāhurnatvovāca guruṁ prati
Hearing these words, trembling like a leaf of the ashvattha tree, the mighty-armed Bhimasena, bowing to his teacher, spoke thus -
Verse 11 (padma.6.51.11)
bhīmasena uvāca- pitāmaha mahābuddhe śṛṇu me paramaṁ vacaḥ yudhiṣṭhiraśca kuṁtī ca tathā drupadanaṁdinī
Bhimasena said: O grandsire, O one of great wisdom, listen to this most important word of mine. Yudhishthira, Kunti, and Drupada's daughter [Draupadi],
Verse 12 (padma.6.51.12)
arjuno nakulaścaiva sahadevastathaiva ca ekādaśyāṁ na bhuṁjaṁti kadācidapi suvratāḥ
Arjuna, Nakula, and Sahadeva as well - all these devoted to their vows never eat on any Ekadashi whatsoever.
Verse 13 (padma.6.51.13)
te māṁ bruvaṁti vai nityaṁ mā bhuṁkṣva tvaṁ vṛkodara ahaṁ tānabruvaṁ tāta bubhukṣā duḥsahā mama
They always say to me: 'O Vrikodara, do not eat.' I say to them, O father, that my hunger is unbearable.
Verse 14 (padma.6.51.14)
dānaṁ dāsyāmi vidhivatpūjayiṣyāmi keśavam bhīmasenavacaḥ śrutvā vyāso vacanamabravīt
'I shall give gifts according to the rite, I shall worship Keshava [instead].' Hearing Bhimasena's words, Vyasa spoke this reply -
Verse 15 (padma.6.51.15)
Vyasa said: If heaven is what you desire, and the wretched hell is what you wish to avoid, then you must never eat on Ekadashi in either fortnight.
Verse 16 (padma.6.51.16)
bhīmasena uvāca- pitāmaha mahābuddhe kathayāmi tavāgrataḥ ekabhakte na śaknomi upavāse kutaḥ prabho
Bhimasena said: O grandsire, O one of great wisdom, I speak the truth before you. I cannot even manage a single meal a day - how then, O lord, could I ever manage a full fast?
Verse 17 (padma.6.51.17)
vṛko'pināma yo vahniḥ sa sadā jaṭhare mama ativelaṁ yadāśnāmi tadā samupaśāmyati
That fire called Vrika, which ever burns within my belly, is quieted only when I eat a very great deal.
Verse 18 (padma.6.51.18)
naikaṁ śaknomyahaṁ kartumupavāsaṁ mahāmune yenaiva prāpyate svargastatkarttāsmi yathātatham tadekaṁ vada niścitya yena śreyo'hamāpnuyām
O great sage, I am not capable of observing even a single fast. But whatever it is by which heaven may be attained, that I shall surely perform exactly as told - tell me that one definite means by which I might attain what is best.
Verse 19 (padma.6.51.19)
vyāsa uvāca- vṛṣasthe mithunasthe vā yadā caikādaśī bhavet jyeṣṭhamāse prayatnena sopoṣyodakavarjitā
Vyasa said: When the sun stands in Taurus or Gemini, on the Ekadashi that falls in the month of Jyeshtha, one should fast with great effort, remaining even without water.
Verse 20 (padma.6.51.20)
gaṁḍūṣācamanaṁ vāri varjayitvodakaṁ budhaḥ upabhuṁjīta naiveha vratabhaṁgo'nyathā bhavet
Save for the sip taken for rinsing the mouth or for the ritual sipping of water, the wise should take no water at all in this vow, otherwise the vow is broken.
Verse 21 (padma.6.51.21)
udayādudayaṁ yāvadvarjayitvodakaṁ naraḥ śrūyatāṁ samavāpnoti dvādaśadvādaśī phalam
A man who renounces water from one sunrise to the next - listen - obtains the fruit of twelve Ekadashis.
Verse 22 (padma.6.51.22)
tataḥ prabhāte vimale dvādaśyāṁ snānamācaret jalaṁ suvarṇaṁ dattvā ca dvijātibhyo yathāvidhi
Then, on the clear morning of Dvadashi, one should bathe, and having given water and gold to the twice-born according to the rite,
Verse 23 (padma.6.51.23)
bhuṁjīta kṛtakṛtyastu brāhmaṇaiḥ sahito vaśī evaṁ kṛte ca yatpuṇyaṁ bhīmasena śṛṇuṣva tat
the self-controlled person, having thus fulfilled his purpose, should eat together with the brahmins. O Bhimasena, listen now to the merit that comes from performing it thus.
Verse 24 (padma.6.51.24)
saṁvatsare tu yāścaiva ekādaśyo bhavaṁti hi tāsāṁ phalamavāpnoti hyatra me nāsti saṁśayaḥ
Whatever the fruit of all the Ekadashis that occur in a single year, that fruit is obtained from this one - in this I have no doubt.
Verse 25 (padma.6.51.25)
iti māṁ keśavaḥ prāha śaṁkhacakragadādharaḥ sarvānparityajya pumānmāmekaṁ śaraṇaṁ vrajet
Keshava himself, bearer of the conch, discus and mace, has told me this - a man should abandon all else and take refuge in me alone.
Verse 26 (padma.6.51.26)
ekādaśyāṁ nirāhārastataḥ pāpātpramucyate dravyaśuddhiḥ kalau nāsti saṁskāraḥ smārtta eva ca
Remaining without food on Ekadashi, a man is freed from sin. In the Kali age purity of wealth no longer remains, nor do the smarta rites remain pure.
Verse 27 (padma.6.51.27)
vaidikastu kutaścāpi prāpte duṣṭe kalau yuge kiṁ nu te bahunoktena vāyuputra punaḥ punaḥ
Then how much less could the Vedic rites be obtained in this wicked Kali age? O son of Vayu, what use is there in saying more - I say this again and again.
Verse 28 (padma.6.51.28)
ekādaśyāṁ na bhuṁjīta pakṣayorubhayorapi ekādaśyāṁ site pakṣe jyeṣṭhemāsyudakaṁ vinā
One should not eat on Ekadashi in either fortnight, and on the Ekadashi of the bright fortnight of Jyeshtha one should remain even without water.
Verse 29 (padma.6.51.29)
puṇyaṁ phalamavāpnoti tacchṛṇuṣva vṛkodara saṁvatsare tu yā proktāḥ śuklaḥ kṛṣṇā vṛkodara
Listen to the meritorious fruit that comes from this, O Vrikodara. Whatever bright and dark fortnight Ekadashis are told to occur throughout the year,
Verse 30 (padma.6.51.30)
upoṣitā hi sarvāḥ syurekādaśyo na saṁśayaḥ dhanadhānyapradā puṇyā putrārogyaśubhapradā
the fast of all of them is thereby accomplished - there is no doubt of this. This vow bestows wealth and grain, is meritorious, and grants sons, health, and every good fortune.
Verse 31 (padma.6.51.31)
upoṣitā naravyāghra iti satyaṁ bravīmi te yamadūtā mahākāyāḥ karālāḥ kṛṣṇarūpiṇaḥ
O tiger among men, I tell you truly - to one who fasts on this, the messengers of Yama, of vast form, terrible, dark of hue,
Verse 32 (padma.6.51.32)
daṁḍapāśadharā raudrā nopasarpaṁti taṁ naram pītāṁbaradharā saumyāścakrahastā manojavāḥ
bearing rod and noose, terrible in form, do not approach that man. Instead, [Vishnu's messengers,] clad in yellow, gentle, bearing the discus, swift as thought,
Verse 33 (padma.6.51.33)
aṁtakālena yaṁtyete vaiṣṇavānvaiṣṇavīpurīm tasmātsarvaprayatnena upoṣyodakavarjitā
lead such Vaishnavas at the time of death to the Vaishnava city [Vaikuntha]. Therefore one should fast with every effort, remaining without water,
Verse 34 (padma.6.51.34)
jaladhenuṁ tadā dattvā sarvapāpaiḥ pramucyate tatastvamasyāṁ kauṁteya sopavāso'rcanaṁ hareḥ
and one should give a jaladhenu [a vessel-cow of water], by which one becomes freed from all sin. O son of Kunti, then you too should fast on this Ekadashi and worship Hari,
Verse 35 (padma.6.51.35)
kuru sarvaprayatnena sarvapāpapraśāṁtaye svapnena me'parādhosti daṁtarāgatayāpi vā
perform this with every effort for the pacification of all your sins. [Vow-formula:] 'If in dream, or while cleaning my teeth, any fault has been committed by me,
Verse 36 (padma.6.51.36)
bhokṣyepare'hni deveśa hyaśanaṁ vāsarāddhareḥ ityuccārya tato maṁtra upavāsaparo bhavet
still, O lord of gods, only on the next day, after the fast of Hari's day, shall I eat.' Having uttered this mantra, one should then become intent upon the fast,
Verse 37 (padma.6.51.37)
sarvapāpavināśāya śraddhā dama samanvitaḥ merumaṁdaramātrāghaṁ striyā puṁsā ca yatkṛtam
for the destruction of all sin, endowed with faith and self-restraint. Whatever sin, even as vast as Mount Meru or Mount Mandara, committed by a woman or a man,
Verse 38 (padma.6.51.38)
sarvaṁ tadbhasmatāṁ yāti ekādaśyāḥ prabhāvataḥ na śaknuvaṁti ye dātuṁ jaladhenuṁ narādhipa
all of that is reduced to ashes by the power of this Ekadashi. O king of men, those who are unable to give a jaladhenu,
Verse 39 (padma.6.51.39)
sakāṁcanaḥ pradātavyo ghaṭako vastrasaṁyutaḥ toyasya niyamaṁ yo'syā kurute vai sa puṇyabhāk
should give a water-vessel together with gold and cloth. Whoever observes the water-fast of this Ekadashi becomes a sharer in merit.
Verse 40 (padma.6.51.40)
phalaṁ koṭisuvarṇasya yāmeyāme śrutaṁ phalam snānaṁ dānaṁ japaṁ homaṁ yadasyāṁ kurute naraḥ
In each of its watches [prahara] the fruit is declared equal to the gift of a crore of gold coins. Whatever bathing, giving, chanting, or fire-offering a man performs on this day,
Verse 41 (padma.6.51.41)
tatsarvaṁ cākṣayaṁ prāptametatkṛṣṇaprabhāṣitam kiṁ vāpareṇa dharmeṇa nirjalaikādaśīṁ vinā
all of that is declared, by Krishna's own word, to bear imperishable fruit. What use is any other observance, without Nirjala Ekadashi?
Verse 42 (padma.6.51.42)
upoṣya samyagvidhivadvaiṣṇavaṁ padamāpnuyāt suvarṇamannaṁ vāso vā yadasyāṁ saṁpradīyate
By observing this fast properly and according to the rite, a man attains the Vaishnava state. Whatever gold, food, or clothing is given on this day,
Verse 43 (padma.6.51.43)
tadasya kuruśārdūla sarvaṁ cāpyakṣayaṁ bhavet ekādaśyāṁ dine yo'nnaṁ bhuṁkte pāpaṁ bhunakti saḥ
O tiger of the Kurus, all of that too becomes imperishable. A man who eats food on the day of Ekadashi eats only sin.
Verse 44 (padma.6.51.44)
ihaloke sa cāṁḍālo mṛtaḥ prāpnoti durgatim ye ca dāsyaṁti dānāni dvādaśyāṁ samupoṣitāḥ
In this world he is like an outcaste, and upon death he attains an evil state. Those who, having fasted, give gifts on Dvadashi,
Verse 45 (padma.6.51.45)
jyeṣṭhamāse site pakṣe prāpsyaṁti paramaṁ padam brahmahā madyapaḥ steno gurudveṣī sadānṛtī
in the bright fortnight of the month of Jyeshtha, attain the supreme state. Even one who has killed a brahmin, drunk liquor, stolen, hated his teacher, or ever spoken falsehood,
Verse 46 (padma.6.51.46)
mucyaṁte pātakaiḥ sarvairnirjalāyairupoṣitā viśeṣaṁ śṛṇu kauṁteya nirjalaikādaśī dine
by fasting on Nirjala Ekadashi becomes freed from all his sins. O son of Kunti, now hear one special matter, concerning the day of Nirjala Ekadashi.
Verse 47 (padma.6.51.47)
yatkarttavyaṁ naraiḥ strībhirdānaṁ śraddhāsamanvitaiḥ jalaśāyī ca saṁpūjyo deyā dhenustathāmmayī
What men and women filled with faith must do is to give gifts; Vishnu, who reclines upon the waters, should be worshipped, and a water-filled cow-vessel should be given.
Verse 48 (padma.6.51.48)
pratyakṣā vā nṛpaśreṣṭha ghṛtadhenurathāpi vā dakṣiṇābhiḥ supuṣṭābhirmiṣṭānnaiśca pṛthagvidhaiḥ
O best of kings, an actual cow, or one fashioned of ghee, may also be given, and with abundant gifts to the priests and various sweet foods,
Verse 49 (padma.6.51.49)
toṣaṇīyāḥ prayatnena dvijā dharmabhṛtāṁ vara tuṣṭā bhavaṁti vai viprāstaistuṣṭairmokṣado hariḥ
O best of the upholders of dharma, the brahmins should be satisfied with great care. When the brahmins are pleased, by their being pleased Hari grants liberation.
Verse 50 (padma.6.51.50)
ātmadrohaḥ kṛtastairhi yaireṣā na hyupoṣitā pāpātmāno durācārā muṣṭāste nātra saṁśayaḥ
Those who have not observed this fast have surely committed treachery against their own soul. Such sinful and ill-conducted people are indeed cheated - there is no doubt of this.
Verse 51 (padma.6.51.51)
kulānāṁ śatamāgāmi atītānāṁ tathā śatam ātmanā saha tairnītaṁ vāsudevasya maṁdiram
A hundred generations yet to come and a hundred generations already past - along with themselves, those who observe this vow carry all of these to the abode of Vasudeva -
Verse 52 (padma.6.51.52)
śāṁtairdāṁtairdānaparairarcayadbhistathā harim kurvadbhirjāgaraṁ rātrau yaireṣā samupoṣitā
those who, tranquil, self-controlled, devoted to giving, worship Hari and keep the night-vigil, having observed this fast.
Verse 53 (padma.6.51.53)
annaṁ vastraṁ tathā gāvo jalaṁ śayyāsanaṁ śubham kamaṁḍaluṁ tathā chatraṁ dātavyaṁ nirjalā dine
On the day of Nirjala, food, clothing, cows, water, an auspicious bed and seat,
Verse 54 (padma.6.51.54)
upānahau yo dadāti pātrabhūte dvijottame sa sauvarṇena yānena svargaloke mahīyate
and also a water-pot and umbrella should be given. Whoever gives sandals to a worthy brahmin,
Verse 55 (padma.6.51.55)
yaścemāṁ śṛṇuyādbhaktyā yaścāpi parikīrtayet ubhau tau svargamāpnoti nātra kāryā vicāraṇā
is honored in the heavenly world, riding upon a chariot made of gold. Whoever hears this with devotion, and whoever proclaims it,
Verse 56 (padma.6.51.56)
yatphalaṁ saṁnihatyāyāṁ rāhugraste divākare kṛtvā śrāddhaṁ labhenmartyastadasyāḥ śravaṇādapi
both attain heaven - there is no need for further consideration here. The fruit that a mortal obtains by performing shraddha at the confluence during a solar eclipse,
Verse 57 (padma.6.51.57)
niyamaṁ ca prakarttavyaṁ daṁtadhāvanapūrvakam ekādaśyāṁ nirāhāro varjayiṣyāmi vai jalam
