Uttara Khanda · Chapter 7

Indra's Defeat in Battle

Chapter 6All chaptersChapter 8

Verse 1 (padma.6.7.1)

nārada uvāca tato jālaṁdharaḥ kruddhaḥ prāha taṁ daityasūdanam kapaṭena balaṁ hatvā kva yāsyasi balādhama

Narada said: Then, enraged, Jalandhara said to that slayer of demons: 'Having killed Bala by deceit, where will you go now, O vilest of the mighty?'

Verse 2 (padma.6.7.2)

ityuktvā taṁ śatamakhaṁ siṁdhusūnuḥ pratāpavān sasūtāśvadhvajarathaṁ chādayāmāsa mārgaṇaiḥ

Having said this, the mighty son of the ocean covered Shatamakha, together with his charioteer, horses, banner, and chariot, in a hail of arrows.

Verse 3 (padma.6.7.3)

papāta mūrcchitaḥ śakro rathopari śaraiḥ kṣataḥ dṛṣṭvā taṁ patitaṁ śakraṁ jagarjārṇavanaṁdanaḥ

Shakra, wounded by the arrows, fell unconscious upon his chariot; seeing him fallen, the ocean's son roared.

Verse 4 (padma.6.7.4)

mūrcchāṁ tyaktvā mumoceṁdro vajraṁ jālaṁdharaṁ prati tadādridalanaṁ haste gṛhītvā siṁdhusaṁbhavaḥ

Casting off his stupor, Indra hurled his thunderbolt at Jalandhara; the ocean-born one caught that mountain-splitting bolt in his own hand.

Verse 5 (padma.6.7.5)

vajraṁ kakṣāpuṭe dhṛtvā rathāduttīrya satvaram abhyadhāvata daityeṁdro deveṁdraṁ dhartumāhave

Tucking the thunderbolt at his side and swiftly leaping down from his chariot, the lord of demons rushed to seize Devendra in battle.

Verse 6 (padma.6.7.6)

tato dudrāva maghavā rathaṁ tyaktvā hariṁ smaran rathamiṁdrasya madavānāruhyārṇavanaṁdanaḥ

Then Maghavan, abandoning his chariot, fled, remembering Hari; and the exultant ocean's son mounted Indra's own chariot.

Verse 7 (padma.6.7.7)

yaṁtāraṁ mātaliṁ kṛtvā yayau prāptamanorathaḥ rathamiṁdrasya tarasā yatra yatra yayau bale

Making Matali his charioteer, his wish now fulfilled, he swiftly drove Indra's chariot to wherever the fighting called.

Verse 8 (padma.6.7.8)

jālaṁdharo mahābāhuḥ svayaṁ cāṁbudharo yathā tataḥ sa kopātpuruṣottamaḥ svayaṁ khaḍgaṁ samudyamya ca naṁdakaṁ raṇe

The mighty-armed Jalandhara himself advanced like a rain-cloud; then, in anger, Purushottama himself raised his sword Nandaka in that battle,

Verse 9 (padma.6.7.9)

saṁprerayitvā garuḍaṁ manojavaṁ jaghāna kopena ca daityavāhinīm rathānhayānkuṁjarapattisaṁghānsa pātayāmāsa balātsahasraśaḥ

and, sending forth Garuda, swift as thought, he struck the demon army in anger; by force he felled thousands of chariots, horses, elephants, and foot-soldiers.

Verse 10 (padma.6.7.10)

janārdanaḥ kaśyapasūnusaṁvṛtaścakāra saṁkhye caritaṁ bhayāvaham keśāsthimajjārudhiraughavāhinīṁ piśācavetālavihaṁgasevitām

Janardana, accompanied by Kashyapa's son, wrought a terrifying scene in that battle — a river flowing with hair, bone, marrow, and streams of blood, thronged by ghosts, vetalas, and birds,

Verse 11 (padma.6.7.11)

karorujaṁghāyudhaśastrapūritāṁ sudustarāṁ vyāghragajeṁdra sevitām raktāṁtrahārāṁgadabhūṣitāṁtāṁ vighūrṇanetrotsavakāṁtivāsasam

filled with severed hands, thighs, and legs, weapons and arms, exceedingly hard to cross, thronged by tigers and lordly elephants, adorned with garlands of entrails and armlets, whose very raiment was the ghastly glint of rolling, staring eyes.

Verse 12 (padma.6.7.12)

viṣṇunā nihataṁ sainyaṁ dṛṣṭvā dānavapuṁgavāḥ jālaṁdharājñayā sarve rurudhuḥ parito harim

Seeing their army destroyed by Vishnu, the foremost demons, at Jalandhara's command, all together surrounded Hari on every side.

Verse 13 (padma.6.7.13)

daityāste tatra bāṇaughānvarṣamāṇā yathāṁbudāḥ yathādvirephāḥ kamalaṁ parvataṁ jaladā iva

Those demons rained down torrents of arrows there, like cloud upon cloud, like bees upon a lotus, like clouds upon a mountain,

Verse 14 (padma.6.7.14)

cūtaṁ yathā pakṣigaṇā gaganaṁ dhūpasaṁcayaḥ na dṛśyo'bhūttadā viṣṇurna tārkṣyo raṇasaṁkaṭe

like flocks of birds upon a mango tree, like a mass of incense-smoke covering the sky — in that press of battle, neither Vishnu nor Garuda could be seen at all.

Verse 15 (padma.6.7.15)

sarve te rathamārūḍhā sarvaśastrairmahāsurāḥ vaikuṁṭhādhipatiṁ jaghnurgarjaṁto bhīmanisvanaiḥ

All those great demons, mounted on their chariots, with every weapon, struck at the Lord of Vaikuntha, roaring with terrible sounds.

Verse 16 (padma.6.7.16)

tānsarvānbhīmarūpeṇa daityāriḥ kupitastadā raṇe nipātayāmāsa vāyuḥ parṇacayaṁ yathā

Then the enemy of demons, enraged, in his fearsome form, felled all of them in battle, as the wind scatters a heap of leaves.

Verse 17 (padma.6.7.17)

śailaromā tato viṣṇuṁ daityaḥ kopādadhāvata harerapi śarāstasya śarīre śīrṇatāṁ gatāḥ

Then the demon Shailaroma, in fury, rushed at Vishnu; even Hari's own arrows shattered to pieces upon his body.

Verse 18 (padma.6.7.18)

śailaromā ca daityāri śarīraṁ cāhanaccharaiḥ hariḥ khaḍgaṁ vinirdhūya śirastasya jahāra ha

Shailaroma too struck the demon-foe's body with arrows; Hari, brandishing his sword, severed his head.

Verse 19 (padma.6.7.19)

chinne śirasi daityasya kabaṁdho vikramanraṇe śailaromā bhujābhyāṁ ca tārkṣyaṁ jagrāha pakṣayoḥ

With his head severed, the demon's headless trunk yet went on fighting fiercely in that battle; Shailaroma seized Garuda by both his wings with his two arms.

Verse 20 (padma.6.7.20)

śiraścotpatya tarasā vilagnaṁ skaṁdhayordṛḍham tatastatrāsyayuddhena hṛṣīkeśo'pi vismitaḥ

His severed head leapt up swiftly and fastened itself firmly back upon his shoulders; even Hrishikesha was astonished at that battle of the headless trunk.

Verse 21 (padma.6.7.21)

śiraḥ saṁlagnamālokya garuḍo nyapatadbhuvi punaścotpatya vegena śiraḥsthānaṁ samāśrayat

Seeing the head reattached, Garuda fell to the ground; then, rising swiftly again, he regained his own composure.

Verse 22 (padma.6.7.22)

śailaromā tato viṣṇuṁ jahāra garuḍādbalī harirjaghne talenāśu gatāyuścāpatadbhuvi

Then mighty Shailaroma snatched Vishnu away from Garuda; Hari struck him swiftly with the flat of his palm, and he fell to the ground, his life gone.

Verse 23 (padma.6.7.23)

tato jālaṁdharaḥ sūtaṁ khaḍgaromāṇamabravīt saṁpreṣaya rathaṁ tatra yatra devo janārdanaḥ

Then Jalandhara said to his charioteer Khadgaroma: 'Drive the chariot to where the god Janardana is.'

Verse 24 (padma.6.7.24)

jālaṁdharasya vacanātkhaṅgaromānayadratham dṛṣṭvā taṁ purato viṣṇumuvācārṇavanaṁdanaḥ

At Jalandhara's word, Khadgaroma drove the chariot there; seeing Vishnu before him, the ocean's son said —

Verse 25 (padma.6.7.25)

niḥśaṁkaṁ jahi māṁ viṣṇo nāhaṁ tvā hanmi mādhava tasya tadvacanaṁ śrutvā krodhasaṁraktalocanaḥ

'Strike me down without hesitation, O Vishnu — I shall not strike you, O Madhava.' Hearing his words, his eyes red with rage,

Verse 26 (padma.6.7.26)

nārāyaṇaḥ prāṇaharaiḥ śarairenamapūrayat viṣṇunā ca vibhinnāṁgo'rṇavasūnuḥ pratāpavān

Narayana filled him with life-taking arrows; and the mighty son of the ocean, though pierced through every limb by Vishnu,

Verse 27 (padma.6.7.27)

hariṁ saṁpūrayāmāsa mārgaṇaughairniraṁtaram nārāyaṇaḥ prāṇaharaiḥ śarairenamapūrayat

still filled Hari, without pause, with streams of arrows in return; Narayana filled him with life-taking shafts.

Verse 28 (padma.6.7.28)

garuḍaṁ patitaṁ dṛṣṭvāsiṁdhusūnoḥ śarairbhuvi rathaṁ saṁsmārayāmāsa vaikuṁṭhasthaṁ janārdanaḥ

Seeing Garuda struck down to the earth by the ocean's son's arrows, Janardana summoned to mind his chariot standing ready in Vaikuntha.

Verse 29 (padma.6.7.29)

sarathastasya saṁprāptaḥ sūtahīno hayairvṛtaḥ aśvairyutaṁ rathaṁ dṛṣṭvā vismito bhagavānraṇe

That chariot, without its charioteer but drawn by its own horses, arrived there at once; and the Lord, seeing it come without a driver, was astonished in that battle.

Verse 30 (padma.6.7.30)

saṁbodhayitvā garuḍaṁ sārathye samayojayat sa dhṛtvā mukuṭaṁ mūrdhni kaustubhaṁ hṛdaye maṇim

Rousing Garuda, he appointed him as charioteer; wearing his crown upon his head and the Kaustubha jewel upon his chest,

Verse 31 (padma.6.7.31)

puruṣārthānhayānkṛtvā yayau jālaṁdharaṁ hariḥ medinīṁ rathacakreṇa dārayaṁśca suraiḥ saha

having made his horses the very embodiments of the four goals of life, Hari, together with the gods, went toward Jalandhara, tearing the earth with his chariot-wheels.

Verse 32 (padma.6.7.32)

jaghāna tarasā bāṇairdānavānāṁ ca vāhinīm devarājena saṁdiṣṭo vītihotro raṇāṁgaṇe

Commanded by the king of gods, Vitihotra swiftly struck down the demon army with arrows on the battlefield,

Verse 33 (padma.6.7.33)

dadāha dānavānīkaṁ samīraṇasamanvitam tadāha taṁ bhagavatā daityasainyaṁ suraiḥ saha

and, aided by the wind, burned the demon host to ashes; then, aided by the Lord, that fire, together with the gods, consumed the demon army.

Verse 34 (padma.6.7.34)

jālaṁdharaḥ svalpaśeṣaṁ dadhyau dṛṣṭvā balaṁ svakam athāha bhārgavaṁ rājā matsainyaṁ nihataṁ suraiḥ

Seeing his own army reduced to a mere remnant, Jalandhara fell into anxious thought; then the king said to Bhargava: 'My army has been destroyed by the gods.

Verse 35 (padma.6.7.35)

tvayi tiṣṭhati maṁtrajñe vikhyāto vidyayā bhavān kiṁ tayā vidyayā brahmankṣatreṇātha balena ca

'While you are here, O knower of mantras, renowned for your learning, O brahmin — what use is that learning, or that kshatriya-might,

Verse 36 (padma.6.7.36)

yā na rakṣati rogārtānyadbalaṁ śaraṇāgatān jālaṁdharavacaḥ śrutvā bhārgavastamabhāṣata

'if it cannot protect the afflicted and those who seek refuge?' Hearing Jalandhara's words, Bhargava said to him —

Verse 37 (padma.6.7.37)

paśya rājanmama balaṁ brāhmaṇasya raṇāṁgaṇe ityuktvā vāriṇā spṛṣṭā huṁkāreṇa prabodhitāḥ

'O king, behold, on this battlefield, my power — the power of a brahmin!' Having said this, he touched them with water and, with the sound of 'Hum,' roused them,

Verse 38 (padma.6.7.38)

utthāpitāste kavinā śaraughaiḥ prāṇahārakaiḥ devāhatā raṇe petuḥ samaṁtātsiṁdhusūnunā

raising them up — those torn by life-taking arrows, struck down by the gods — but they fell once more all around the ocean's son.

Verse 39 (padma.6.7.39)

bāṇairjarjaradehāste dhṛtaprāṇā narādhipa na mṛtāstvamaratvācca bāṇairbhinnāśca sattama

O king, their bodies riddled by arrows, they yet clung to life; O best of men, being touched by immortality's power, they did not die though pierced through.

Verse 40 (padma.6.7.40)

Then the god Narayana said to Brihaspati: 'Shame on your power, O guru of the gods, that you do not revive the gods!'

Verse 41 (padma.6.7.41)

dhiṣaṇastu jagannāthamuvāca tvaritaṁ tadā oṣadhībhirahaṁ svāminjīvayiṣyāmi nirjarān

Then Dhishana quickly said to the Lord of the world: 'O Master, I shall revive the gods with herbs.'

Verse 42 (padma.6.7.42)

ityuktvā dhiṣaṇaḥ so'pi yayau kṣīrārṇavasthitam droṇamadriṁ tadā gatvā sukhaṁ gṛhyauṣadhīḥ svayam

Having said this, Dhishana went to Mount Drona, standing within the Ocean of Milk; going there, he easily gathered the herbs himself,

Verse 43 (padma.6.7.43)

gurustāsāṁ ca yogena jīvayāmāsa nirjarān utthitāste tato devā jaghnurdānavavāhinīm

and the guru, by their application, revived the immortals; those gods, thus risen, then fell upon the demon host.

Verse 44 (padma.6.7.44)

devānsamutthitāndṛṣṭvā babhāṣe siṁdhujaḥ kavim vinā tvadvidyayā kāvya kathamete samutthitāḥ

Seeing the gods risen again, the ocean-born one said to the sage: 'O poet, without your own learning, how have these risen again?'

Verse 45 (padma.6.7.45)

iti daityoktamākarṇya śukraḥ prāhārṇavātmajam kṣīrasāgaramadhyastho droṇonāma mahāgiriḥ

Hearing this demon's words, Shukra said to the ocean's son: 'In the midst of the Ocean of Milk stands a great mountain named Drona.

Verse 46 (padma.6.7.46)

auṣadhyastatra tiṣṭhaṁti jīvayaṁti ca yā mṛtān tatra gatvā surācāryo gṛhītvoṣadhisaṁcayam

'There grow such herbs that they revive even the dead; going there, the gods' preceptor gathered a store of those herbs, and —

Verse 47 (padma.6.7.47)

raṇe vinihatāndevānutthāpayati maṁtrataḥ bhārgavoktamathākarṇya sainyabhāraṁ mahābalaḥ

'has, by mantra, raised the gods slain in battle.' Hearing what Bhargava had said, the mighty Jalandhara —

Verse 48 (padma.6.7.48)

śuṁbhe nikṣipya tarasā yayau jālaṁdharo'rṇavam atha praviṣṭaḥ kṣīrābdhau veśmadivyaṁ mahāprabham

swiftly entrusted the burden of his army to Shumbha and went off to the Ocean; then he entered that divine, splendorous abode within the Ocean of Milk.

Verse 49 (padma.6.7.49)

praviśya tatra kṣīrābdheḥ krīḍāsthānaṁ dadarśa saḥ noṣṇo na śītalo vāyurna tamo yatra dṛśyate

Entering there, he beheld the pleasure-ground of the Ocean of Milk, where the breeze was neither hot nor cold, and no darkness was ever seen,

Verse 50 (padma.6.7.50)

yatra gāyaṁti nṛtyaṁti krīḍaṁti ca varastriyaḥ supīnastanabhārāḍhyāḥ kṛśodaryaḥ sudaṁtikāḥ

where lovely women sang, danced, and sported — full-breasted, slender-waisted, and beautiful of teeth,

Verse 51 (padma.6.7.51)

netravibhramavikṣepairnitaṁbaparivarttanaiḥ aṁgaiḥ saṁmohanai ramyairbāhuvallīvicālanaiḥ

with the playful glances of their eyes, the sway of their hips, their enchanting, graceful limbs, and the swaying motion of their vine-like arms,

Verse 52 (padma.6.7.52)

pādavinyāsaraṇi tairmadhurairvacanastavaiḥ saugaṁdhyasaukhyadairvāsairnetrabhramarahuṁkṛtaiḥ

with the sweetness of their gait, with soft, praising words, with fragrant and pleasing garments, with the humming of bees drawn to their flower-like eyes,

Verse 53 (padma.6.7.53)

cāmarāṁdolalīlābhiḥ sragbhiḥ smitavilokitaiḥ sevāṁ cakrurvilāsinyastatra sutaḥ

with the graceful swaying of fly-whisks, with garlands, and with smiling glances — there those courtly women rendered their service; and there the ocean's son —

Verse 54 (padma.6.7.54)

krīḍaṁtaṁ tatra dugdhābdhiṁ saṁvīkṣya samarotsukaḥ athāha praṇipatyāsau kṣīrābdhiṁ tāta haṁsi mām droṇācalauṣadhīrvyājādaṁbubhiḥ plāvayasvataḥ

...seeing the Ocean of Milk himself thus at play, Jalandhara, eager for battle, bowed and said: 'O father, strike me down. Under the pretext of Mount Drona's herbs, sweep it away with your own waters.'

Verse 55 (padma.6.7.55)

kṣīrasāgara uvāca taṁ prāptaṁ śaraṇaṁ putra plāvayāmyūrmibhiḥ katham munīṁdrāstaṁ na śaṁsaṁti yastyajeccharaṇāgatam

The Ocean of Milk said: 'My son, he has come to me for refuge — how could I sweep him away with my waves? Great sages never praise one who abandons a refuge-seeker.'

Verse 56 (padma.6.7.56)

pitṛvyavacanaṁ śrutvā saṁkrodhātsaṁtataṁ girim talapraharaṇenaiva tāḍayāmāsa daityarāṭ

Hearing his uncle's words, the demon king, in great fury, struck that mountain again and again with mere blows of his palm.

Verse 57 (padma.6.7.57)

tato droṇagirī rājanbhīto jālaṁdharādbhṛśam athājagāma rūpeṇa prāha jālaṁdharaṁ prati

O king, then Mount Drona, greatly terrified of Jalandhara, came to him in bodily form and said to Jalandhara —

Mounting his already-readied chariot, he went toward Keshava, who stood in his own chariot; seeing Madhava there, the river's son laughed loudly.

Verse 62 (padma.6.7.62)

tāvattvaṁ tiṣṭha śakaṭe yāvaddhanyāmarīnaham evamuktvā jaghānāśu śaraistāṁ devavāhinīm

The gods, torn by his arrows, cried out to Brihaspati: 'Save us!' Then Brihaspati went swiftly to the Ocean of Milk.

Verse 64 (padma.6.7.64)

palāyadhvaṁ surāḥ sarve droṇādriḥ kṣayamāgataḥ evamuktavatastasya gurościccheda siṁdhujaḥ

'Flee, all you gods — Mount Drona has met its end!' As he spoke thus, the ocean-born one —

Verse 66 (padma.6.7.66)

yajñopavītaṁ keśāṁśca bāṇaistīkṣṇairhasansurān tato dudrāva vegena guruḥ prāṇabhayārditaḥ

cut off his sacred thread and hair with sharp arrows, mocking the gods; then the guru, stricken with fear for his life, fled away swiftly.

Verse 67 (padma.6.7.67)

devāḥ sarve raṇaṁ hitvā palāyāṁcakrire nṛpa evaṁ vidrāvya devānvai janārddanamadhāvata

O king, all the gods, abandoning the battle, fled away; having thus routed the gods, he rushed at Janardana.

Verse 68 (padma.6.7.68)

Hrishikesha too, eager for the fight, pursued the lord of demons; then a terrible battle broke out between Vishnu and Jalandhara.

Verse 69 (padma.6.7.69)

durddharṣaṇo bāṇajālaiḥ plāvayāmāsa keśavam tānbāṇānkhaṁḍaśaḥ kṛtvā pūrayitvā śarairmahān

The unassailable Jalandhara flooded Keshava with a hail of arrows; but Vishnu, shattering those arrows to pieces and filling him in return with his own mighty shafts —

Verse 70 (padma.6.7.70)

vāsudevosuraṁ bāṇairjālaṁdharamapīḍayat jālaṁdharo rathaṁ tyaktvā śarapīḍitavigrahaḥ

afflicted the demon Jalandhara with arrows; Jalandhara, abandoning his chariot, his body pierced with wounds —

Verse 71 (padma.6.7.71)

viṣṇuṁ vijetuṁ dudrāva saṁyatisthamatha drutam tamāyāṁtaṁ raṇe dṛṣṭvā harirvivyādha sāyakaiḥ

rushed swiftly to conquer Vishnu, who stood firm upon the battlefield; seeing him coming, Hari pierced him with arrows.

Verse 72 (padma.6.7.72)

bāṇānaṁgesahadviṣṇoḥ prāpto'sau rathasaṁnidhau hastenaikena garuḍaṁ dvitīyena rathaṁ hareḥ

Enduring those arrows upon his own body, he reached the vicinity of Vishnu's chariot; seizing Garuda with one hand and Hari's chariot with the other —

Verse 73 (padma.6.7.73)

bhrāmayitvāṁbare śaśvatśvetadvīpe nyapātayat jālaṁdharakarakṣipto garuḍo'pi papāta ha

whirling them repeatedly through the sky, he flung them down onto Shvetadvipa; Garuda too, hurled by Jalandhara's hand, fell there.

Verse 74 (padma.6.7.74)

He rested there a long while on Krauncha Island; Achyuta, hurled from that whirling chariot,

Verse 75 (padma.6.7.75)

raṇamāgatya daityeśaṁ tiṣṭhatiṣṭhetyabhāṣata dṛṣṭvā tamāgataṁ bhūyaḥ keśavaṁ samarapriyaḥ

returned to the battlefield and said to the lord of demons: 'Stand, stand and fight!' The battle-loving Jalandhara, seeing Keshava come again,

Verse 76 (padma.6.7.76)

pūrayanmārgaṇairbhūmiṁ jagarjārṇavanaṁdanaḥ

filled the earth with a torrent of arrows and roared, that son of the ocean.

Verse 77 (padma.6.7.77)

vivyādha daityaṁ harirāśu śaktyā hṛdi sphuraṁtyā sa tataḥ papāta sūto na yattaṁ samarānnivāsaṁ taṁ prāha re kena kṛtosmyalajjaḥ

Hari swiftly pierced the demon with a spear flashing at his heart, and he fell; his charioteer, seeing him not return from the field, cried out: 'Alas — by whom have I been made to witness such shame?'

Verse 78 (padma.6.7.78)

daityāri jālaṁdharayormahattadā babhūva yuddhaṁ dharaṇītalasthayoḥ premṇā śriyastaṁ na jaghāna dānavaṁ svayaṁ haristasya śaraiḥ papāta

Then a great battle took place between the demons' foe and Jalandhara, both now standing upon the ground; out of love for Sri, he did not slay that demon — instead, Hari himself fell, struck by his arrows.

Verse 79 (padma.6.7.79)

tato nirīkṣya goviṁdaṁ patitaṁ dharaṇītale pragṛhyārṇavajo daitya āruroha nijaṁ ratham tatastamiṁdirā prāptā rudaṁtī viṣṇuvallabhā

Then, seeing Govinda fallen to the ground, the ocean-born demon seized him and mounted him upon his own chariot; then Indira, Vishnu's beloved, came there weeping.

Verse 80 (padma.6.7.80)

saṁsthitā kamalā tatra patiṁ kamalalocanam patitaṁ tu patiṁ vīkṣya lakṣmīḥ prāhārṇavātmajam

Kamala stood there, seeing her lotus-eyed husband; and, seeing him fallen, Lakshmi said to the ocean-born one —

Verse 81 (padma.6.7.81)

śṛṇuṣva vacanaṁ bhrātarjito viṣṇurdhṛtastvayā bhaginyā na ca vaidhavyaṁ dātuṁ yuktaṁ mahābala

'Listen to my words, brother — you have conquered and captured Vishnu; but, O mighty one, it is not fitting to bestow widowhood upon your own sister.'

Verse 82 (padma.6.7.82)

śrutvā tu vacanaṁ tasyā mumoca jagataḥ patim jālaṁdharo mahābāhuḥ svasre bhaktyā nanāma ca

Hearing her words, the mighty-armed Jalandhara released the Lord of the world, and bowed to his sister with devotion.

Verse 83 (padma.6.7.83)

vavaṁde caraṇau viṣṇoḥ svasuḥ snehāttadāṁjasā viṣṇurjālaṁdharaṁ prāha tuṣṭo'smi tava karmaṇā varaṁ varaya daityeśa kiṁ prayacchāmi te varam

Out of love for his sister, he at once, with sincere heart, reverenced Vishnu's feet as well; Vishnu said to Jalandhara: 'I am pleased by this deed of yours — choose a boon, O lord of demons, what boon shall I grant you?'

Verse 84 (padma.6.7.84)

jālaṁdhara uvāca yadi tvaṁ mama tuṣṭo'si śauryeṇānena keśava sthātavyaṁ matpituḥ sthāne tvayā kamalayā saha

Jalandhara said: 'O Keshava, if you are pleased with me for this valor, then you must dwell, together with Kamala, in my father's own realm.'

Verse 85 (padma.6.7.85)

tathetyuktvā ca saṁsmṛtya garuḍaṁ dharaṇīdharaḥ āruhya ca jagannāthaḥ kṣīrābdhiṁ priyayā saha

'So be it,' he said; and, remembering Garuda, the Bearer of the Earth, the Lord of the world, mounting him together with his beloved —

Verse 86 (padma.6.7.86)

tadāprabhṛti kṛṣṇasya vāsaḥ śvaśuramaṁdire abdhau vasati deveśo lakṣmyāḥ priyacikīrṣayā

From that time onward, Krishna's dwelling has been in his father-in-law's own house; the Lord of gods dwells in the ocean, wishing to please Lakshmi.
