The Creation, the Slaying of Madhu and Kaitabha, and the Marks of a Vaishnava

Chapter 1All chaptersChapter 3

Verse 1 (padma.7.2.1)

vyāsa uvāca- sṛṣṭerādau mahāviṣṇuḥ sisṛkṣuḥ sakalaṁ jagat sraṣṭā pātā ca saṁhartā trimūrtirabhavatsvayam

Vyasa said: At the beginning of creation, Maha-Vishnu, desiring to bring forth the entire universe, himself became the threefold form — creator, sustainer, and destroyer.

Verse 2 (padma.7.2.2)

sṛṣṭyarthamasya jagataḥ sasarja brahmasaṁjñakam dakṣiṇāṁ gataātmānamātmanā śreṣṭhapūruṣaḥ

For the sake of creating this world, that supreme Being brought forth from himself, from his own right side, the self called Brahma.

Verse 3 (padma.7.2.3)

tatastu pālanārthāya jagato jagatīpatiḥ viṣṇuṁ sasarja vāmāṁśānnijāṁśaṁ keśavaṁ mune

Then, O sage, for the sake of sustenance, the Lord of the world brought forth from his left portion his own part, Vishnu named Keshava.

Verse 4 (padma.7.2.4)

atha saṁharaṇārthāya jagato rudramavyayam mune sasarja madhyāṁgātkṛtapadmālayaḥ prabhuḥ

Then, O sage, for the sake of dissolution, that Lord who dwells in the lotus brought forth from his middle limb the imperishable Rudra.

Verse 5 (padma.7.2.5)

rajaḥ satvaṁ tamaśceti puruṣaṁ triguṇātmakam vadaṁti kecidbrahmāṇaṁ viṣṇuṁ kecicca śaṁkaram

That one Being, made of the three qualities — rajas, sattva, and tamas — some call Brahma, some call Vishnu, and some call Shankara.

Verse 6 (padma.7.2.6)

eko viṣṇustridhā bhūtvā sṛjatyatti ca pāti ca tasmādbhedo na karttavyastriṣu lokeṣu sattamaiḥ

The one Vishnu, becoming threefold, creates, devours, and protects; therefore, O best of ones, no difference should be made among these three throughout the three worlds.

Verse 7 (padma.7.2.7)

ādyā prakṛtiretasya mahāviṣṇoḥ parātmanaḥ nidānaṁbhūtaviśvasya vidyā vidyeti gīyate

The primordial nature of that supreme Self, Maha-Vishnu, which is the original cause of the entire universe, is celebrated by the name Vidya.

Verse 8 (padma.7.2.8)

bhāvābhāvasvarūpā sā jagaddhetuḥ sanātanī brāhmī lakṣmīrambiketi trimūrtiḥ sahasā'bhavat

That eternal power, cause of the world, existing in the form of both being and non-being, at once became threefold as Brahmi, Lakshmi, and Ambika.

Verse 9 (padma.7.2.9)

sṛṣṭisthitivināśeṣu yāṁ niyojya tato mune ādyāṁ caivādyapuruṣastatraivāṁtaradhīyata

O sage, having appointed that primal power to creation, maintenance, and destruction, the primeval Being himself vanished from sight there.

Verse 10 (padma.7.2.10)

yasyājñayā tato brahmā mahābhūtānsasarja ha pṛthivyākāśavāyvaṁbu vahnīnpañcasamādhinā

By whose command Brahma then, through five stages of concentrated creation, brought forth the great elements — earth, ether, air, water, and fire.

Verse 11 (padma.7.2.11)

bhūrbhuvaḥ svastathā caiva mahaścaiva janastathā tapaśca satyamityādīnsṛṣṭavānkamalāsanaḥ

Brahma, seated on the lotus, created the worlds beginning with Bhuh, Bhuvah, Svah, Mahah, Janah, Tapah, and Satya.

Verse 12 (padma.7.2.12)

atalaṁ sṛṣṭavānbrahmā tato'dhovitalaṁ dvija tato'dhaḥsutalaṁ caiva tato'dhaśca talātalam

O twice-born, Brahma created Atala, and below it Vitala, and below that Sutala, and below that Talatala.

Verse 13 (padma.7.2.13)

mahātalamadhastasmāttato'dhaśca rasātalam tasmādadhaśca pātālaṁ lokānevaṁ yathākramam

Below that, Mahatala; below that, Rasatala; and below that, Patala — thus were the nether worlds fashioned in due order.

Verse 14 (padma.7.2.14)

devatānāṁnivāsārthaṁ ratnasānuṁ mahāgirim sṛṣṭavānpṛthivīmadhye jāmbūnadasamujjvalam

For the dwelling of the gods, Brahma created amid the earth a great mountain crowned with jeweled peaks, golden and supremely radiant.

Verse 15 (padma.7.2.15)

maṁdaraṁ caramaṁ caiva trikūṭamudayācalam anyāṁśca parvatāṁścaiva sṛṣṭavānvividhānapi

Mount Mandara, Mount Charama, Trikuta, and Udayachala, and many other mountains besides, he likewise brought into being.

Verse 16 (padma.7.2.16)

lokālokastataścaiva tanmadhye saptasāgarāḥ saptadvīpāśca viprendra parameśa svayaṁbhuvā

Then came the mountain Lokaloka, and amid it the seven oceans and — O great Lord among brahmins — the seven continents, brought forth by the self-born Brahma.

Verse 17 (padma.7.2.17)

jambudvīpo dvijaśreṣṭha dvīpaśca plakṣasaṁjñitaḥ vijñeyo dviguṇastasmācchālmalo dviguṇastataḥ

O best of the twice-born, there is Jambudvipa, and twice its size, know, is the continent called Plaksha, and twice that again is Shalmala.

Verse 18 (padma.7.2.18)

te ca plakṣādayo dvīpāḥ sarvabhāga samanvitāḥ samastaguṇasaṁyuktā devadevarṣimūrtayaḥ

Those continents beginning with Plaksha are furnished with every division, endowed with every quality, and take the very form of gods and celestial seers.

Verse 19 (padma.7.2.19)

saptadvīpā ime vipra saptasāgaraveṣṭitāḥ teṣāṁ nāmāni vakṣyāmi sāgarāṇāṁ niśāmaya

O brahmin, these seven continents are girdled by seven oceans; I shall speak their names — listen with care.

Verse 20 (padma.7.2.20)

lavaṇekṣu surā sarpirdadhidugdhajalāṁtakāḥ ete samudrā devarṣe pūrvasmācca paraḥ parāḥ

Salt, sugarcane-juice, wine, clarified butter, curd, milk, and fresh water — these, O sage among gods, are the oceans, each successive one larger than the last.

Verse 21 (padma.7.2.21)

vijñeyā dviguṇāḥ sarva ālokālokaparvatāḥ dvīpedvīpe tato brahmā vṛkṣagulmalatādikān

All the mountains of Lokaloka should be known as each successively double. Then, on every continent, Brahma created trees, shrubs, creepers, and the rest,

Verse 22 (padma.7.2.22)

tiryagyonigatāñjantūnsṛṣṭavāndvijasattama atha devānmanuṣyāṁśca nāgānvidyādharāṁstathā

and, O best of the twice-born, beings born in animal wombs as well; then gods, men, serpent-folk, and Vidyadharas,

Verse 23 (padma.7.2.23)

kramātsasarja putrāṁśca tato dakṣādikānmunīn brahmakṣattriyaviṭśūdrānanyāṁścaivāṁtyajāṁstathā

then, in order, his own sons, then sages beginning with Daksha, and brahmins, kshatriyas, vaishyas, shudras, and the outcaste peoples besides.

Verse 24 (padma.7.2.24)

teṣāṁ ca vartanādīni sṛṣṭavānsa prajāpatiḥ hemādri dakṣiṇaṁ yadvai viṁdhyādreruttaraṁ tathā

That Lord of creatures fashioned also their livelihoods and customs. That tract which lies south of the Golden Mountain (the Himalaya) and north of the Vindhya range —

Verse 25 (padma.7.2.25)

āhustadbhārataṁ varṣaṁ śubhāśubhaphalapradam āsādya bhārate varṣe ye janmani narottamāḥ

that they call Bharatavarsha, the land that grants both good and ill fruit. Those excellent men who, having attained birth in Bharatavarsha,

Verse 26 (padma.7.2.26)

dharmakarmāṇi kurvaṁti te sarve keśavopamāḥ karmabhūmau kṛtaṁ karma śubhaṁ vāśubhameva vā

perform deeds of dharma — all of them are the very equal of Keshava. Whatever deed, good or ill, is done in this land of action,

Verse 27 (padma.7.2.27)

tatphalaṁ bhuṁjate loko bhogabhūmiṣu sattama karmabhūmiṁ samāgatya yo dharmakarmasūdyataḥ

its fruit people, O best one, experience in the lands of enjoyment. Whoever, having come to this land of action, remains devoted to deeds of dharma,

Verse 28 (padma.7.2.28)

na ca tena samaḥ ko'pi triṣulokeṣu vidyate tasya syātsaphalaṁ janma jīvitaṁ ca sujīvitam

in the three worlds there is no one equal to him; his birth is fruitful and his life truly well-lived.

Verse 29 (padma.7.2.29)

śrīnārāyaṇasevāyāṁ matiryasya na vidyate janmakoṭyarjitaiḥ puṇyaiḥ saṁsāraikādhināyake

One whose mind is not fixed on the service of Sri Narayana — though he possess merit earned across ten million births — that toward the sole overlord of samsara,

Verse 30 (padma.7.2.30)

nārāyaṇe devadeve bhaktiḥ syātsudṛḍhā nṛṇām samastasukhadaścāpi sa ślāghyo nirbhayo'pi ca

toward Narayana, God of gods, whoever has such firm devotion is himself the giver of every happiness, worthy of praise, and utterly fearless.

Verse 31 (padma.7.2.31)

tyājyaḥ sa deśaḥ sahasā nātiṣṭhedyatra vaiṣṇavaḥ janmāṁtarārjitaṁ pāpaṁ svalpaṁ vā yadi vā bahu

That land in which no Vaishnava dwells settled should at once be forsaken. Whatever sin was gathered in a former birth, be it little or great,

Verse 32 (padma.7.2.32)

tatkṣaṇātkṣayamāpnoti bhagavadbhaktadarśanāt vaiṣṇavāṁghrijalaṁ yastu samastapātakāpaham

is destroyed that very instant by the mere sight of a devotee of the Lord. Whoever bears upon his own head, with devotion, the foot-water of a Vaishnava,

Verse 33 (padma.7.2.33)

vahetsvaśirasā bhaktyā gaṅgāsnānena tasya kim muhūrtamapi yaḥ kuryātsaḍgaṁ bhāgavataiḥ saha

which washes away every sin — of what use to him is bathing in the Ganga? Whoever keeps company with devotees of the Lord even for a single muhurta,

Verse 34 (padma.7.2.34)

sa mucyate sarvapāpairbrahmahatyāmukhairapi dharmakarmāṇi viprendra kriyaṁte yāni kāni ca

he is freed from all sins, even the foremost sin of killing a brahmin. Whatever acts of dharma, O lord of brahmins, are performed in the presence of a devotee of the Lord,

Verse 35 (padma.7.2.35)

bhagavadbhaktapuratastāni syurakṣayāṇi ca muhūrttaṁ vā muhūrtārddhaṁ yatra tiṣṭhaṁti vaiṣṇavāḥ

all of them become imperishable. Where Vaishnavas remain even for half a muhurta or a whole one,

Verse 36 (padma.7.2.36)

satyaṁ satyaṁ punaḥ satyaṁ tattīrthaṁ tattapovanam annaṁ vā salilaṁ vāpi phalaṁ vā vaiṣṇavāya ca

that place is truly, truly, and again truly, a sacred ford and an ascetic's forest. Whether it be food, or water, or fruit, whatever, O brahmin,

Verse 37 (padma.7.2.37)

yatkiṁciddīyate vipra taddānamakṣayaṁ bhavet samastadevatārūpo vaiṣṇavaḥ parikīrtitaḥ

is given to a Vaishnava, that gift becomes imperishable. The Vaishnava is proclaimed to be the very embodiment of all the gods.

Verse 38 (padma.7.2.38)

sa cetsaṁtoṣito yena toṣitāḥ sarvadevatāḥ saṁsāre'sminmahāghore nānāduḥkhasamanvite

If he is satisfied, all the gods are thereby satisfied. In this exceedingly terrible transmigratory world, filled with manifold sufferings,

Verse 39 (padma.7.2.39)

bhagavadbhaktapuruṣaḥ kadācinnāvasīdati tasmāttvamapi viprendra kriyāyogena keśavam

a devotee of the Lord never comes to grief. Therefore, O lord of brahmins, you too, through the discipline of kriya-yoga,

Verse 40 (padma.7.2.40)

samārādhya sadā bhaktyā vraja viṣṇoḥ padaṁ param sūta uvāca- tadetadvacanaṁ śrutvā kānīnasya mahātmanaḥ

worship Keshava always with devotion, and thus go to the supreme abode of Vishnu. Suta said: Hearing this word of the great soul Kanina (Vyasa),

Verse 41 (padma.7.2.41)

śirasāṁjalimādāya jaiminiḥ paryapṛcchata jaiminiruvāca- bhagavadbhaktamāhātmyaṁ tvayā proktaṁ punaḥ punaḥ

Jaimini, raising his joined palms to his head, asked further. Jaimini said: O teacher, you have declared, again and again, the glory of the Lord's devotees —

Verse 42 (padma.7.2.42)

guro kiṁ lakṣaṇaṁ teṣāṁ tatsarvaṁ brūhi sāṁpratam kathaṁ vā vaiṣṇavā lokā jñātavyā munisattama

now tell me all their distinguishing marks. And how, O best of sages, are those Vaishnava people to be recognized?

Verse 43 (padma.7.2.43)

ādito brūhi tatsarvaṁ yadi te mayyanugrahaḥ vyāsa uvāca- madhukaiṭabhayoḥ pūrvaṁ hatayorvedhasā svayam

If you have grace upon me, tell it all from the very beginning. Vyasa said: Once, when Madhu and Kaitabha had been slain by the Ordainer himself,

Verse 44 (padma.7.2.44)

pṛṣṭo yadāha bhagavāṁstanniśāmaya vedmyaham kalpāṁte rudrarūpeṇa saṁhārya sakalaṁ jagat

when questioned, what the Lord had said — hear it, for I know it. At the end of the kalpa, having in the form of Rudra dissolved the entire universe,

Verse 45 (padma.7.2.45)

svayamekaśca bhagavānsuṣvāpa yogamāyayā supte tasminbhagavati yoganidrā vimohite abhavatpṛthivī sarvā salilaugha pariplutā

the Lord alone lay down to sleep through his own Yoga-maya. While that Lord slept, enveloped in Yoga-nidra, the whole earth became flooded with a mass of water.

Verse 46 (padma.7.2.46)

ato brahmā jagatsraṣṭā tannābhikamalopari tamādipuruṣaṁ dhyātvā tasthau tadgatamānasaḥ

Then Brahma, creator of the world, resting upon the lotus of his navel, meditating on that primeval Being, remained there with his mind fixed on him alone.

Verse 47 (padma.7.2.47)

tasminkāle mahāghore viṣṇoḥ karṇamalāddvija jātau mahāsurau ghorau madhukaiṭabhasaṁjñitau

In that exceedingly terrible time, O twice-born, from the wax of Vishnu's ear were born two dreadful and mighty demons, named Madhu and Kaitabha.

Verse 48 (padma.7.2.48)

aṁtarikṣe bhramaṁtau tau dānavāvatidāruṇau śrīviṣṇornābhikamale brahmāṇaṁ tāvapaśyatām

Roaming through the sky, those two most terrible demons caught sight of Brahma seated upon the lotus of Vishnu's navel.

Verse 49 (padma.7.2.49)

taṁ haṁtumatha daityau tau mahābalaparākramau udyamaṁ cakraturvipra krodhasaṁraktalocanau

To slay him, those two mighty and valorous demons, O brahmin, their eyes reddened with rage, made ready their assault.

Verse 50 (padma.7.2.50)

tato brahmā jagatsraṣṭā viciṁtya tadvadhaṁ hṛdā yoganidrāṁ bhagavatīṁ tuṣṭāva ślakṣṇayā girā

Then Brahma, creator of the world, his heart fixed on preventing that slaying, praised the goddess Yoga-nidra with a gentle voice.

Verse 51 (padma.7.2.51)

tasya stavaṁ samākarṇya brahmaṇaḥ parameṣṭhinaḥ uvāceti vacaḥ prītyā kiṁ te'bhimatamucyatām

Hearing the prayer of Brahma, the supreme lord, that goddess spoke these words with affection: tell me whatever it is you wish.

Verse 52 (padma.7.2.52)

brahmovāca- atyugradānavāvetau haṁtuṁ māṁ kṛtaniścayau māyayā mohaya kṣipraṁ trātāramacyutaṁ tyaja

Brahma said: These two exceedingly fierce demons are resolved upon killing me. Bewilder them at once with your power of illusion, and release my protector Achyuta from your spell.

Verse 53 (padma.7.2.53)

tato bhāgavatī nidrā mahāviṣṇuṁ tamatyajat dānavābhyāṁ tatastābhyāmaṁtarikṣe kṛpāmayaḥ

Then the goddess Nidra released Maha-Vishnu. Then, in the sky, that merciful Lord who cherishes those who take refuge in him, against those two demons —

Verse 54 (padma.7.2.54)

yuyudhe bāhuyuddhena śaraṇāgatavatsalaḥ pañcavarṣasahasrāṇi kṛtvā yuddhaṁ sudāruṇam

waging a most fearsome battle with his very arms, fought on for five thousand years.

Verse 55 (padma.7.2.55)

Neither victory nor defeat came to either side. Then those two demons, thoroughly bewildered by the great illusion,

Verse 56 (padma.7.2.56)

varaṁ vṛṇviti cāsmatto'gadatāṁ keśavaṁ prati tataḥ prahasya deveśa uvāceti vaco dvija

said to Keshava: ask a boon of us. Then the Lord of gods, O twice-born, laughed and spoke these words —

Verse 57 (padma.7.2.57)

yadi tuṣṭau ca vāṁ daityau madvadhyau bhavataṁ drutau tatastau dānavau ghorau bhagavaṁtaṁ janārdanam

If you two demons are pleased with me, then swiftly become fit to be slain by me. Then those two terrible demons, to the Lord Janardana,

Verse 58 (padma.7.2.58)

ityūcaturmahāmāyau mahāmāyāvimohitau ayameva varo datto bhavate nātra saṁśayaḥ

still bewildered by the great illusion, said this: this very boon has been granted to you — of that there is no doubt.

Verse 59 (padma.7.2.59)

mārayāvāṁ vinā vāri mahī yatra janārddana mahāsurau tatastau tu ānīya jaghanaṁ prati

O Janardana, slay us in a place void of water, wherever there is dry land. Then, O brahmin, bringing those two great demons upon his own thigh,
