Kriya Khanda (Kriyayogasara) · Chapter 26
The Dharma of the Four Ages and the Closing Glory of the Purana
Verse 1 (padma.7.26.1)
jaiminiruvāca- kalau yuge mahābhāga samāyāte sudāruṇe bhaviṣyaṁti janāḥ sarve kīdṛśāstadvadasva me
Jaimini said: Most fortunate one, when the exceedingly terrible Kali age arrives, what will all people be like — tell me this.
Verse 2 (padma.7.26.2)
vyāsa uvāca- ādyaṁ satyayugaṁ prāhustatra viprādayo janāḥ nārāyaṇārcanaparāḥ śokavyādhivivarjitāḥ
Vyasa said: The first age is called Satya-yuga; in it, brahmins and all other people were devoted to the worship of Narayana, free from grief and disease.
Verse 3 (padma.7.26.3)
satyoktibhāṣiṇaḥ sarve sadayā dīrghajīvinaḥ dhanadhānyādisampannā hiṁsādaṁbhavivarjitāḥ
All spoke the truth, were compassionate, long-lived, endowed with wealth and grain, and free from violence and hypocrisy.
Verse 4 (padma.7.26.4)
paropakaraṇāścaiva sarvaśāstravidastathā evaṁvidhāḥ satyayuge sarve lokā dvijottama
They were helpful to others and knowers of every scripture; best of brahmins, such were all people in the Satya age.
Verse 5 (padma.7.26.5)
rājadharmagrāhiṇaśca bhūpālā janapālanāḥ aho satyayugasyāsti ko vyākhyātuṁ guṇaṁ yaśaḥ
Kings upheld the duty of kingship and protected their subjects. Ah, who indeed is capable of describing the virtue and glory of the Satya age?
Verse 6 (padma.7.26.6)
adharmoccāraṇaṁ yatra janāḥ ke'pi na kurvate tretāyuge samāyāte dharmaḥ pādonakaṁ gataḥ
There, no one even uttered anything against dharma. When the Treta age arrived, one quarter of dharma diminished.
Verse 7 (padma.7.26.7)
alpaśokānvitā lokāḥ kecitkecidaghāśrayāḥ viṣṇudhyānaratā lokā yajñadānaparāyaṇāḥ
People had but little grief, though a few embraced sin; people were absorbed in meditation on Vishnu and devoted to sacrifice and giving.
Verse 8 (padma.7.26.8)
varṇāśramācāraratāḥ sukhinaḥ svasthacetasaḥ kṣetrabhūmikṛtaḥ śūdrāḥ sarvebrāhmaṇasevinaḥ
They were devoted to the conduct proper to their caste and stage of life, happy and sound of mind; shudras were engaged in tilling the land, and all served the brahmins.
Verse 9 (padma.7.26.9)
brāhmaṇāśca mahātmāno vedavedāṅgapāragāḥ pratigrahanivṛttāśca satyasandhā jitendriyāḥ
The brahmins were great souls, masters of the Vedas and their auxiliary branches, abstaining from improper gifts, true to their word, and masters of their senses.
Verse 10 (padma.7.26.10)
tapovrataratā nityaṁ dātāro viṣṇusevinaḥ tretāyugasyāvasāne dvāpare yuga āgate
They were ever devoted to austerity and vows, generous in giving, servants of Vishnu. At the end of the Treta age, when the Dvapara age arrived —
Verse 11 (padma.7.26.11)
dvipādahīno dharmaḥ syātsukhaduḥkhānvitā narāḥ kecitkecitpāparatāḥ kecitkecicca dharmiṇaḥ
— dharma lost half of itself, men became mixed with both joy and sorrow; some were given to sin, some remained devoted to dharma.
Verse 12 (padma.7.26.12)
kecitkecidguṇairhīnāḥ kecitkecinmahāguṇāḥ atyantaduḥkhinaḥ kecitkecicca sukhinastathā
Some were devoid of virtue, some greatly virtuous; some were exceedingly sorrowful, others happy.
Verse 13 (padma.7.26.13)
pratigrahe brāhmaṇaśca kadācitkurute spṛhām bhūbhujairdhanalobhena kadācitpīḍyate prajā
Brahmins sometimes began to desire improper gifts; subjects sometimes began to suffer, at the hands of kings greedy for wealth.
Verse 14 (padma.7.26.14)
viṣṇupūjāparā viprāḥ śūdrāśca dvijasevinaḥ yadā yugeyuge dharmaḥ pādonatāṁ gato dvija
Brahmins were devoted to the worship of Vishnu, and shudras served the brahmins. Brahmin, as, age by age, dharma lost a quarter of its strength —
Verse 15 (padma.7.26.15)
tadā vyāso viṣṇurūpī vedabhāgaṁ cakāra ha kalauyuge ca viprendra sarvapāpaikamaṁdire
— Vyasa, the very form of Vishnu, divided the Vedas. Foremost of brahmins, in the Kali age, that sole abode of every sin —
Verse 16 (padma.7.26.16)
ekapādo bhaveddharmaḥ sarve pāparatā janāḥ brāhmaṇāḥ kṣattriyā vaiśyāḥ śūdrāḥ pāpaparāyaṇāḥ
— only a single foot of dharma remains, and all people become given to sin; brahmins, kshatriyas, vaishyas, and shudras all become devoted to sin.
Verse 17 (padma.7.26.17)
atyaṁtakāminaḥ krūrā bhaviṣyaṁti kalau yuge vedaniṁdākarāścaiva dyūtacauryakarāstathā
In the Kali age, people will become exceedingly lustful and cruel, revilers of the Vedas, given to gambling and theft.
Verse 18 (padma.7.26.18)
vidhavāsaṁgamagnāśca bhaviṣyaṁti kalau yuge vṛttyarthabrāhmaṇāḥ kecinmahākapaṭadharmiṇaḥ
In the Kali age, people will become absorbed in relations with widows; some brahmins, for mere livelihood, will practice a most deceitful pretense of dharma.
Verse 19 (padma.7.26.19)
sarve straiṇā bhaviṣyaṁti mādakadravyasevinaḥ sadā strīyoniniratāḥ paradravyaṁ haraṁti ca
All will become controlled by women, given to intoxicating substances; ever absorbed in sexual pleasure, they will seize the wealth of others.
Verse 20 (padma.7.26.20)
parānnalolupā nityaṁ tapovrataparāṅmukhāḥ pākhaṇḍasaṅgabaddhāśca bhaviṣyaṁti kalau yuge
They will constantly crave others' food, turn away from austerity and vows; in the Kali age they will remain bound in the company of hypocrites.
Verse 21 (padma.7.26.21)
raktāmbarā bhaviṣyaṁti brāhmaṇāḥ śūdradharmiṇaḥ kalau yāsyaṁti nirvṛttā uttamā ati nīcatām
Brahmins will wear red garments and behave like shudras; in the Kali age, those of high birth, cut off from their own lineage, will sink into the utmost degradation.
Verse 22 (padma.7.26.22)
nīcāśca dhanasampannā yāsyaṁtyuccapadaṁ prati pradāsyaṁtyupakāribhyo dānāni sakalā janāḥ
The low-born, becoming wealthy, will attain high positions; all people will give gifts only to those who have done them a favor.
Verse 23 (padma.7.26.23)
yatnādapi ca neṣyaṁti vṛṣalā vipravarttanam mitrasnehādvadiṣyaṁti kūṭasākṣyaṁ kalau janāḥ
Shudras, even with effort, will not adopt brahminical conduct; in the Kali age, out of fondness for a friend, people will give false testimony.
Verse 24 (padma.7.26.24)
adharmabuddhilapanā dharmabuddhivilāpinaḥ parokṣaniṁdakāḥ krūrāḥ saṁmukhe priyavādinaḥ
They will prattle with sinful understanding, yet lament as if with righteous understanding; cruel, they will slander behind one's back while speaking sweetly to one's face.
Verse 25 (padma.7.26.25)
sādhvīvādaṁ vadiṣyaṁti bhartāraṁ puṁścalī striyaḥ parastrīhiṁsakāścaiva gotravikrayiṇo dvijāḥ
Unchaste women will speak words of feigned fidelity to their husbands; brahmins will become tormentors of other men's wives, and sellers of their own lineage.
Verse 26 (padma.7.26.26)
kanyāvikrayiṇaścaiva bhaviṣyaṁti kalau yuge strījitāḥ puruṣāḥ sarve striyo'pyatyaṁtacañcalāḥ
In the Kali age they will also become sellers of daughters; all men will be dominated by women, and women too will be exceedingly fickle.
Verse 27 (padma.7.26.27)
kalauyuge bhaviṣyaṁti kalau martyā durāśayāḥ alpasasyā vasumatī meghāḥ svalpodakāstathā
In the Kali age, mortals will become wicked of intent; the earth will yield little crop, and the clouds will hold little water.
Verse 28 (padma.7.26.28)
akālavarṣiṇaścāpi bhaviṣyaṁti kalau yuge kalau viḍbhojino gāvaḥ svalpakṣīrāśca jaimine
In the Kali age, the clouds will rain out of season. O Jaimini, in the Kali age, cows will even eat filth, and give but little milk.
Verse 29 (padma.7.26.29)
ghṛtahīnaṁ ca tatkṣīraṁ bhaviṣyaṁti na saṁśayaḥ ātmastutiparā lokāḥ paraniṁdāparāyaṇāḥ
That milk will yield no ghee, of this there is no doubt. People will become devoted to praising themselves and to reviling others.
Verse 30 (padma.7.26.30)
bhaviṣyaṁti ca kharvāṅgā bālā bahvannabhojanāḥ pitṛyajñaṁ kariṣyaṁti daṁbhārthaṁ brāhmaṇāḥ kalau
Children will be stunted in limb, yet eat vast amounts of food; in the Kali age, brahmins will perform ancestral rites merely for show.
Verse 31 (padma.7.26.31)
sarve vacaḥsnehinaḥ syuryāvatkāryaṁ na siddhyati narāndharmaparāndṛṣṭvā sarve copahasaṁti vai
All people will speak sweetly only until their own purpose is served; seeing men devoted to dharma, everyone will mock them.
Verse 32 (padma.7.26.32)
vardhaṁtyadharmato lokāstasmātpāparatā janāḥ daśadvādaśavarṣe ca samūlo'pyeti saṁkṣayam
People flourish only through unrighteousness; therefore, those given to sin come to complete ruin, even root and all, by the age of ten or twelve.
Verse 33 (padma.7.26.33)
jalasyeva bhaviṣyaṁti yathā varṣāsu vṛddhayaḥ tato lokā bhaviṣyaṁti kalau galitayauvanāḥ
Just as water rises rapidly in the rainy season, so too, in the Kali age, people's youth will swiftly fade away.
Verse 34 (padma.7.26.34)
paṁcame vāpi ṣaṣṭhe vā varṣe strī garbhadhāriṇī bahvapatyāśca puruṣā bhaviṣyaṁtyatiduḥkhinaḥ
A woman will conceive by her fifth or sixth year of age itself; men with many children will become exceedingly wretched.
Verse 35 (padma.7.26.35)
netukāmāśca sarve'pi dātukāmā na ke'pi ca kalau mlecchā bhaviṣyaṁti rājānaḥ pāpatatparāḥ
All will be eager to take, but none eager to give; in the Kali age, kings will become like barbarians, devoted to sin.
Verse 36 (padma.7.26.36)
ekavarṇā bhaviṣyaṁti viṣayārthaṁ kalau janāḥ kaleḥ prathamasaṁdhyāyāṁ hariṁ niṁdaṁti mānavāḥ
For the sake of sensual pleasure, people in the Kali age will become of a single caste; in the very first twilight of the Kali age itself, men will begin to revile Hari.
Verse 37 (padma.7.26.37)
kalermadhye na paśyaṁti harernāmāni kevale brāhmaṇāḥ kṣattriyā vaiśyā vṛṣalāśca kalau yuge
In the middle of the Kali age, people will not even look toward the mere names of Hari; in the Kali age, brahmins, kshatriyas, vaishyas, and shudras —
Verse 38 (padma.7.26.38)
ekavarṇā bhaviṣyaṁti varṇāścatvāra eva ca yadāyadā dvijaśreṣṭha hāniḥ sukṛtināṁ bhavet
— all four castes will become a single caste. Best of brahmins, whenever there occurs a decline among the virtuous —
Verse 39 (padma.7.26.39)
vṛddhiśca pāpināṁ nṝṇāṁ jñeyā vṛddhistadā kalau yadyapyayaṁ kalirghoro mayā prokto dvijottama
— at that time, correspondingly, the increase of sinful men should be known as the increase of the Kali age itself. Best of brahmins, although I have thus described this terrible Kali age —
Verse 40 (padma.7.26.40)
tathāpyasti mahānasya guṇo guṇavatāṁ vara satye dvādaśabhirvarṣairbhavetpuṇyasya sādhanam
— still, best among the virtuous, this age holds one great virtue. Whatever accomplishment of merit is achieved in the Satya age over twelve years —
Verse 41 (padma.7.26.41)
tadardhena ca tretāyāṁ māsena dvāpare bhavet ahorātreṇaiva vipra bhavettacca kalau yuge
— that same is achieved in half the time in the Treta age, in a single month in the Dvapara age; and, brahmin, that very same is achieved in the Kali age in just a single day and night.
Verse 42 (padma.7.26.42)
tasmātkaliyuge nṝṇāṁ martyenaivottamā gatiḥ dvādaśābdairyuge'nyasminharimabhyarcya yatphalam
Therefore, in the Kali age, men attain the supreme goal even while yet mortal, and swiftly. The fruit that, in another age, is obtained by worshipping Hari for twelve years —
Verse 43 (padma.7.26.43)
tatphalaṁ labhate martyo harimuccārya vai kalau harernāmaikamapyatra kalau vadati yo naraḥ
— that same fruit a mortal obtains in the Kali age merely by uttering Hari's name. Whatever man, in the Kali age, speaks even a single name of Hari —
Verse 44 (padma.7.26.44)
kalirna bādhate taṁ ca satyaṁ satyaṁ na saṁśayaḥ jaiminiruvāca- manaḥ śuddhivihīnatvātsamastaṁ karmaniṣphalam
— Kali does not afflict him, this is true, true, of this there is no doubt. Jaimini said: Since all deeds are fruitless when the mind lacks purity —
Verse 45 (padma.7.26.45)
iti pūrvaṁ tvayā proktaṁ mano vismayadaṁ mama kalau sarve bhaviṣyaṁti manaḥśuddhivivarjitāḥ
— this you have declared before, and it fills my mind with astonishment. In the Kali age all people will be devoid of purity of mind —
Verse 46 (padma.7.26.46)
teṣāṁ yathā bhavetkarma sakalaṁ brūhi tadguro vyāsa uvāca- yatkiṁcitkurute karma martyo dharmaṁ kalau yuge
— then how might all their deeds still bear fruit, guru? Tell me this. Vyasa said: Whatever meritorious act a mortal performs in the Kali age —
Verse 47 (padma.7.26.47)
tadarpayenmahāviṣṇau bhaktibhāvasamanvitaḥ viṣṇau samarpitaṁ karma sarvamevākṣayaṁ bhavet
— he should offer it, endowed with devotion, to Maha-Vishnu; whatever deed is thus offered to Vishnu becomes altogether imperishable.
Verse 48 (padma.7.26.48)
vyāsa uvāca- iti te kathitaṁ sarvaṁ vṛttaṁ brāhmaṇasattama yacchrutvā bhaktibhāvena naro mokṣamavāpnuyāt
Vyasa said: Best of brahmins, thus have I told you the whole account, hearing which with devotion a man attains liberation.
Verse 49 (padma.7.26.49)
sūta uvāca- evaṁ prabodhitastena jaiminiḥ paramātmanā kriyāyogarato bhūtvā jagāma paramaṁ padam
Suta said: Thus instructed by that supreme soul, Jaimini, becoming devoted to the practice of kriya-yoga, attained the supreme state.
Verse 50 (padma.7.26.50)
imaṁ kriyāyogasāraṁ vyāsenoktaṁ mahātmanā ye paṭhaṁti janā bhaktyā śṛṇvaṁti ca mumukṣavaḥ
Whatever people, seeking liberation, read or hear with devotion this Kriyayogasara, spoken by the great soul Vyasa —
Verse 51 (padma.7.26.51)
te sarve pātakairghorairbahujanmārjitairapi vimuktāḥ paramāṁ muktiṁ labhaṁte nātra saṁśayaḥ
— all of them, freed even from terrible sins accumulated across many births, attain supreme liberation, of this there is no doubt.
Verse 52 (padma.7.26.52)
yadyadiṣṭaṁ paṭhaṁtyetacchṛṇvanti ca mumukṣavaḥ labhaṁte tattadevāśu prasādātkamalāpateḥ
Whatever seekers of liberation desire, reading and hearing this, they swiftly obtain that very thing, by the grace of the Consort of Lakshmi.
Verse 53 (padma.7.26.53)
ślokārddhaṁ ślokamekaṁ vā ślokapādamathāpi vā naraḥ paṭhitvā śrutvā ca labhate vāṁchitaṁ phalam
Half a verse, a single verse, or even just a single quarter-verse — reading and hearing it, a man obtains his desired fruit.
Verse 54 (padma.7.26.54)
likhitvā lekhayitvā vā yaḥ śāstramidamarcayet sa viṣṇupūjanasyaiva phalaṁ prāpnoti mānavaḥ
Whatever man, having written this scripture himself or had it written by others, honors it, that man obtains the very fruit of worshipping Vishnu.
Verse 55 (padma.7.26.55)
idamatiśayaguhyaṁ niḥsṛtaṁ vyāsa vaktrād ciratarapurāṇaṁ prītidaṁ vaiṣṇavānām ciramamaravarādyairvaṁditāṁghrermurāreḥ sakalabhuvanabharttuścakriṇaḥ prītaye'stu
May this exceedingly secret, most ancient Purana, issued from the very mouth of Vyasa, dear to the Vaishnavas, be for the pleasure of Murari, the discus-bearing sustainer of all the worlds, whose feet have long been worshipped by the foremost of the immortal gods.
