Vidyeshvara Samhita · Chapter 15
Place, Time, and the Worthy Recipient in Sacred Rites
Verse 1 (shiva.vidyeshvara.15.1)
ṛṣaya ūcuḥ deśādīnkramaśo brūhi sūta sarvārthavittama sūta uvāca śuddhaṁ gṛhaṁ samaphalaṁ devayajñādikarmasu
The sages said: O Suta, knower of all things, tell us in order about place and the rest. Suta said: A pure house yields equal (base) merit in deva-yajna and other rites.
Verse 2 (shiva.vidyeshvara.15.2)
tato daśaguṇaṁ goṣṭhaṁ jalatīraṁ tato daśa tato daśaguṇaṁ bilvatulasyaśvatthamūlakam
Ten times more than that is a cowshed; ten times more than that is a riverbank; then tenfold that is the root of a bilva, tulasi, or ashvattha tree.
Verse 3 (shiva.vidyeshvara.15.3)
tato devālayaṁ vidyāttīrthatīraṁ tato daśa tato daśaguṇaṁ nadyāstīrthanadyāstato daśa
Then know a temple to be tenfold more; ten times more than that is the bank of a sacred bathing place; then tenfold that is a holy river, and ten times more than that is a river that is itself a great pilgrimage site.
Verse 4 (shiva.vidyeshvara.15.4)
saptagaṅgānadītīrthaṁ tasyā daśaguṇaṁ bhavet gaṅgā godāvarī caiva kāverī tāmraparṇikā
The confluence-tirtha of the Seven Gangas is tenfold more than that. These are the Ganga, the Godavari, the Kaveri, the Tamraparni,
Verse 5 (shiva.vidyeshvara.15.5)
sindhuśca sarayū revā sapta gaṅgāḥ prakīrtitāḥ tato'bdhitīre daśa ca parvatāgre tato daśa
the Sindhu, the Sarayu, and the Reva — these are proclaimed as the seven Gangas. Ten times more than that is the ocean shore, and ten times more than that is a mountain peak.
Verse 6 (shiva.vidyeshvara.15.6)
sarvasmādadhikaṁ jñeyaṁ yatra vā rocate manaḥ kṛte pūrṇaphalaṁ jñeyaṁ yajñadānādikaṁ tathā
Greater than all these is wherever the mind finds true delight. In the Krita (Satya) Yuga, sacrifice, charity and such acts are known to bear their full fruit.
Verse 7 (shiva.vidyeshvara.15.7)
tretāyuge tripādaṁ ca dvāpare'rdhaṁ sadā smṛtam kalau pādaṁ tu vijñeyaṁ tatpādonaṁ tato'rdhake
In the Treta Yuga it is always remembered as three-quarters of that fruit; in the Dvapara, half. In the Kali age it should be known as one quarter — and that is further diminished by a quarter, then halved again.
Verse 8 (shiva.vidyeshvara.15.8)
śuddhātmanaḥ śuddhadinaṁ puṇyaṁ samaphalaṁ viduḥ tasmād daśaguṇaṁ jñeyaṁ ravisaṅkramaṇe budhāḥ
For one of pure soul, an ordinary pure day yields equal merit, the wise know. Ten times more than that, the wise should know, is at the sun's transit (sankranti).
Verse 9 (shiva.vidyeshvara.15.9)
viṣuve taddaśaguṇamayane taddaśa smṛtam taddaśa mṛgasaṅkrāntau taccandragrahaṇe daśa
At the equinox it is tenfold that; at the solstice it is likewise remembered as tenfold; tenfold at the transit into Capricorn; tenfold at a lunar eclipse.
Verse 10 (shiva.vidyeshvara.15.10)
tataśca sūryagrahaṇe pūrṇaṁ kālottame viduḥ jagadrūpasya sūryasya viṣayogācca rogadam
And at a solar eclipse — the best of times — the merit is known to be complete. Because of contact with poison, the Sun, who is the very form of the world, becomes a cause of disease at that time.
Verse 11 (shiva.vidyeshvara.15.11)
atastadviṣaśāntyarthaṁ snānadānajapāṁścaret viṣaśāntyarthakālatvātsa kālaḥ puṇyadaḥ smṛtaḥ
Therefore, for the pacification of that poison, one should perform bathing, charity, and japa. Because that time is meant for pacifying the poison, it is remembered as bestowing merit.
Verse 12 (shiva.vidyeshvara.15.12)
janmarkṣe ca vratānte ca sūryarāgopamaṁ viduḥ mahatāṁ saṅgakālaśca koṭyarkagrahaṇaṁ viduḥ
The fruit gained on one's birth-star and at the completion of a vow is known to equal that of a solar eclipse. The time of association with great souls is known to equal ten million solar eclipses.
Verse 13 (shiva.vidyeshvara.15.13)
taponiṣṭhā jñānaniṣṭhā yogino yatayastathā pūjāyāḥ pātramete hi pāpasaṅkṣayakāraṇam
Those devoted to austerity, those devoted to knowledge, yogis, and ascetics — these indeed are worthy recipients of worship, for they are the cause of the total destruction of sin.
Verse 14 (shiva.vidyeshvara.15.14)
caturviṁśatilakṣaṁ vā gāyatryā japasaṁyutaḥ brāhmaṇastu bhavetpātraṁ sampūrṇaphalabhogadam
Or a brahmin who has completed twenty-four lakh repetitions of the Gayatri japa likewise becomes a worthy recipient, bestowing complete fruit and enjoyment.
Verse 15 (shiva.vidyeshvara.15.15)
patanāttrāyata iti pātraṁ śāstre prayujyate dātuśca pātakāttrāṇātpātramityabhidhīyate
"Because it saves one from falling, it is called patra" — thus the term is used in scripture. And because it protects the giver from sin, it is likewise called patra.
Verse 16 (shiva.vidyeshvara.15.16)
gāyakaṁ trāyate pātādgāyatrītyucyate hi sā yathārthahino loke'sminparasyārthaṁ na yacchati
Because she saves the one who chants her from falling, she is called Gayatri. In this world, one who is truly without means cannot give for another's sake.
Verse 17 (shiva.vidyeshvara.15.17)
arthavāniha yo loke parasyārthaṁ prayacchati svayaṁ śuddho hi pūtātmā narānsantrātumarhati
But he who, being wealthy in this world, gives of his own wealth for another's sake — being himself pure, of purified soul — is worthy to save other men.
Verse 18 (shiva.vidyeshvara.15.18)
gāyatrījapaśuddho hi śuddhabrāhmaṇa ucyate tasmād dāne jape home pūjāyāṁ sarvakarmaṇi
He who is purified by the japa of Gayatri is indeed called a "pure brahmin." Therefore, in giving, in japa, in the fire-offering, in worship, and in every rite —
Verse 19 (shiva.vidyeshvara.15.19)
dānaṁ kartuṁ tathā trātuṁ pātratvaṁ brāhmaṇo'rhati annasya kṣudhitaṁ pātraṁ nārīnaramayātmakam
— a brahmin alone is worthy of the status of a fit recipient, both for giving and for protecting the giver from sin. For food, the worthy recipient is a hungry being, whether woman or man.
Verse 20 (shiva.vidyeshvara.15.20)
brāhmaṇaṁ śreṣṭhamāhūya yatkāle susamāhitam tadarthaṁ śabdamarthaṁ vā sadbodhakamabhīṣṭadam
Having invited an excellent brahmin at the proper time, one who is well-composed, one should offer for his sake either edifying counsel or wealth that grants what is desired.
Verse 21 (shiva.vidyeshvara.15.21)
icchāvataḥ pradānaṁ ca sampūrṇaphaladaṁ viduḥ yatpraśnānantaraṁ dattaṁ tadardhaphaladaṁ viduḥ
A gift given to one who genuinely desires it is known to yield complete fruit; that which is given right after being asked for is known to yield half the fruit.
Verse 22 (shiva.vidyeshvara.15.22)
yatsevakāya dattaṁ syāttatpādaphaladaṁ viduḥ jātimātrasya viprasya dīnavṛtterdvijarṣabhāḥ
That which is given to a servant is known to yield a quarter of the fruit. O bulls among the twice-born, to a brahmin who is such merely by birth and of a lowly way of life —
Verse 23 (shiva.vidyeshvara.15.23)
dattamarthaṁ hi bhogāya bhūrloke daśavārṣikam vedayuktasya viprasya svarge hi daśavārṣikam
— wealth given grants ten years of enjoyment in the earthly world. Wealth given to a brahmin versed in the Vedas grants ten years of enjoyment in heaven.
Verse 24 (shiva.vidyeshvara.15.24)
gāyatrījapayuktasya satye hi daśavārṣikam viṣṇubhaktasya viprasya dattaṁ vaikuṇṭhadaṁ viduḥ
Given to a brahmin engaged in Gayatri-japa, it grants ten years in Satyaloka. What is given to a brahmin devoted to Vishnu is known to grant Vaikuntha.
Verse 25 (shiva.vidyeshvara.15.25)
śivabhaktasya viprasya dattaṁ kailāsadaṁ viduḥ tattallokopabhogārthaṁ sarveṣāṁ dānamiṣyate
What is given to a brahmin devoted to Shiva is known to grant Kailasa. Giving to all these various recipients is thus prescribed for enjoyment in their respective worlds.
Verse 26 (shiva.vidyeshvara.15.26)
daśāṅgamannaṁ viprasya bhānuvāre dadannaraḥ parajanmani cārogyaṁ daśavarṣaṁ samaśnute
A man who gives food accompanied by its ten accessories to a brahmin on Sunday obtains, in his next birth, ten years of good health.
Verse 27 (shiva.vidyeshvara.15.27)
bahumānamathāhvānamabhyaṅgaṁ pādasevanam vāso gandhādyarcanaṁ ca ghṛtāpūparasottaram
Great honor, then invitation, anointing with oil, washing of feet, lodging, worship with fragrance and the like, and fine offerings of ghee, cakes, and syrups —
Verse 28 (shiva.vidyeshvara.15.28)
ṣaḍrasaṁ vyañjanaṁ caiva tāmbūlaṁ dakṣiṇottaram namaścānugamaścaiva svannadānaṁ daśāṅgakam
the six flavors, side dishes, betel, a fine gift, salutation, and finally escorting him on his way — these are the ten accessories of the gift of good food.
Verse 29 (shiva.vidyeshvara.15.29)
daśāṅgamannaṁ viprebhyo daśabhyo vai dadannaraḥ arkavāre tathārogyaṁ śatavarṣaṁ samaśnute
A man who gives food with its ten accessories to ten brahmins likewise obtains, on Sunday, a hundred years of good health.
Verse 30 (shiva.vidyeshvara.15.30)
somavārādivāreṣu tattadvāraguṇaṁ phalam annadānasya vijñeyaṁ bhūrloke parajanmani
On Monday and the other days of the week, the fruit of the gift of food corresponds to the quality of that particular day, experienced in the next birth in the earthly world.
Verse 31 (shiva.vidyeshvara.15.31)
saptasvapi ca vāreṣu daśabhyaśca daśāṅgakam annaṁ dattvā śataṁ varṣamārogyādikamaśnute
On all seven days, having given the ten-accessoried food to ten brahmins each, one obtains a hundred years of good health and the like.
Verse 32 (shiva.vidyeshvara.15.32)
evaṁ śatebhyo viprebhyo bhānuvāre dadannaraḥ sahasravarṣamārogyaṁ śarvaloke samaśnute
Likewise, a man who gives to a hundred brahmins on Sunday obtains a thousand years of good health in the world of Shiva.
Verse 33 (shiva.vidyeshvara.15.33)
sahasrebhyastathā dattvā'yutavarṣaṁ samaśnute evaṁ somādivāreṣu vijñeyaṁ hi vipaścitā
Having given to a thousand, one obtains ten thousand years of that reward. Thus it should be understood by the wise for Monday and the other days as well.
Verse 34 (shiva.vidyeshvara.15.34)
bhānuvāre sahasrāṇāṁ gāyatrīpūtacetasām annaṁ dattvā satyaloke hyārogyādi samaśnute
On Sunday, having given food to a thousand brahmins whose minds are purified by Gayatri, one obtains good health and the like in Satyaloka.
Verse 35 (shiva.vidyeshvara.15.35)
ayutānāṁ tathā dattvā viṣṇuloke samaśnute annaṁ dattvā tu lakṣāṇāṁ rudraloke samaśnute
Having given likewise to ten thousand, one obtains it in Vishnuloka; and having given food to a hundred thousand, one obtains it in Rudraloka.
Verse 36 (shiva.vidyeshvara.15.36)
bālānāṁ brahmabuddhyā hi deyaṁ vidyārthibhirnaraiḥ yūnāṁ ca viṣṇubuddhyā hi putrakāmārthibhirnaraiḥ
Men desiring knowledge should give to children with the conception of them as Brahma; and men desiring sons, to young men with the conception of them as Vishnu.
Verse 37 (shiva.vidyeshvara.15.37)
vṛddhānāṁ rudrabuddhyā hi deyaṁ jñānārthibhirnaraiḥ bālastrī bhāratībuddhyā buddhikāmairnarottamaiḥ
Men desiring wisdom should give to elders with the conception of them as Rudra; and the best of men desiring intelligence, to young girls with the conception of them as Bharati (Saraswati).
Verse 38 (shiva.vidyeshvara.15.38)
lakṣmībuddhyā yuvastrīṣu bhogakāmairnarottamaiḥ vṛddhāsu pārvatībuddhyā deyamātmārthibhirjanaiḥ
The best of men desiring enjoyment should give to young women with the conception of them as Lakshmi; and those desiring the Self, to elderly women with the conception of them as Parvati.
Verse 39 (shiva.vidyeshvara.15.39)
śilavṛttyoñchavṛttyā ca gurudakṣiṇayārjitam śuddhadravyamiti prāhustatpūrṇaphaladaṁ viduḥ
Wealth earned by gleaning grain left in the fields, by gathering scattered grains, or as a teacher's fee is declared to be "pure wealth," and is known to bestow complete fruit when given.
Verse 40 (shiva.vidyeshvara.15.40)
śuklapratigrahāddattaṁ madhyamaṁ dravyamucyate kṛṣivāṇijyakopetamadhamaṁ dravyamucyate
Wealth received from a righteous acceptance of gifts is called "middling wealth." Wealth connected with agriculture and trade is called "inferior wealth."
Verse 41 (shiva.vidyeshvara.15.41)
kṣatriyāṇāṁ viśāṁ caiva śauryavāṇijyakārjitam uttamaṁ dravyamityāhuḥ śūdrāṇāṁ bhṛtakārjitam
For kshatriyas and vaishyas, wealth earned through valor and trade respectively is called "excellent wealth"; for shudras, wealth earned through service is their excellent wealth.
Verse 42 (shiva.vidyeshvara.15.42)
strīṇāṁ dharmārthināṁ dravyaṁ paitṛkaṁ bhartṛkaṁ tathā gavādīnāṁ dvādaśānāṁ caitrādiṣu yathākramam
For women who desire dharma, their proper wealth is that from their father or their husband. As for the twelve gifts beginning with a cow, given in Chaitra and the other months in due order —
Verse 43 (shiva.vidyeshvara.15.43)
sambhūya vā puṇyakāle dadyādiṣṭasamṛddhaye gobhūtilahiraṇyājyavāsodhānyaguḍāni ca
— gathered together, one should give them at an auspicious time for the fulfillment of what is desired: a cow, land, sesame, gold, ghee, clothing, grain, and jaggery,
Verse 44 (shiva.vidyeshvara.15.44)
raupyaṁ lavaṇakūṣmāṇḍaṁ kanyā dvādaśakaṁ tathā godānāddattagavyena gomayenopakāriṇā
silver, salt, a gourd, and a girl given in marriage — thus the twelve. By the gift of a cow, and by the beneficial cow-products and cow-dung given with it —
Verse 45 (shiva.vidyeshvara.15.45)
dhanadhānyādyāśritānāṁ duritānāṁ nivāraṇam jalasnehādyāśritānāṁ duritānāṁ tu gojalaiḥ
— the sins connected with wealth, grain, and the like are averted; and the sins connected with water, oil and ghee are averted by cow-water.
Verse 46 (shiva.vidyeshvara.15.46)
kāyikāditrayāṇāṁ tu kṣīradadhyājyakaistathā tathā teṣāṁ ca puṣṭiśca vijñeyā hi vipaścitā
The three sins beginning with bodily sins are destroyed respectively by milk, curd, and ghee; and likewise, by these, nourishment of the recipients is also known by the wise.
Verse 47 (shiva.vidyeshvara.15.47)
bhūdānaṁ tu pratiṣṭhārthamiha cāmutra ca dvijāḥ tiladānaṁ balārthaṁ hi sadā mṛtyujayaṁ viduḥ
O twice-born, the gift of land is for a firm foundation both here and hereafter. The gift of sesame is known to always grant strength and victory over death.
Verse 48 (shiva.vidyeshvara.15.48)

Verse 49 (shiva.vidyeshvara.15.49)
dhānyamannaṁsamṛddhyarthaṁ madhurāhāradaṁ guḍam raupyaṁ reto'bhivṛddhyarthaṁ ṣaḍrasārthaṁ tu lāvaṇam
Grain is for the abundance of food; jaggery grants sweet nourishment. Silver is for the increase of vital seed, and salt is for providing the six flavors.
Verse 50 (shiva.vidyeshvara.15.50)
sarvaṁ sarvasamṛddhyarthaṁ kūṣmāṇḍaṁ puṣṭidaṁ viduḥ prāptidaṁ sarvabhogānāmiha cāmutra ca dvijāḥ
All the items together are for overall abundance; the gourd is known to give nourishment. O twice-born, together these grant the attainment of all enjoyments, both here and hereafter.
Verse 51 (shiva.vidyeshvara.15.51)
yāvajjīvanamuktaṁ hi kanyādānaṁ tu bhogadam panasāmrakapitthānāṁ vṛkṣāṇāṁ phalameva ca
The gift of a daughter in marriage is declared to grant enjoyment for as long as life lasts. And likewise the fruit of trees such as jackfruit, mango, and wood-apple,
Verse 52 (shiva.vidyeshvara.15.52)
kadalyādyauṣadhīnāṁ ca phalaṁ gulmodbhavaṁ tathā māṣādīnāṁ ca mudgānāṁ phalaṁ śākādikaṁ tathā
the fruit of plants such as the plantain and that which grows from shrubs; and likewise black gram, green gram and vegetables and the like —
Verse 53 (shiva.vidyeshvara.15.53)
marīcisarṣapādyānāṁ śākopakaraṇaṁ tathā yadṛtau yatphalaṁ siddhaṁ taddeyaṁ hi vipaścitā
— and pepper, mustard and other condiments for vegetables; whatever fruit ripens in its proper season, that indeed should be given by the wise.
Verse 54 (shiva.vidyeshvara.15.54)
śrotrādīndriyatṛptiśca sadā deyā vipaścitā śabdādidaśabhogārthaṁ digādīnāṁ ca tuṣṭidā
The wise should always give gifts that bring satisfaction to the senses beginning with hearing, for the enjoyment of sound and the other sense-objects, and gifts that give contentment to the directions and the like.
Verse 55 (shiva.vidyeshvara.15.55)
vedaśāstraṁ samādāya buddhvā gurumukhātsvayam karmaṇāṁ phalamastīti buddhirāstikyamucyate
Having taken up the Vedic scriptures and having understood, oneself, from the mouth of the guru, that "there is fruit to actions" — this conviction is called astikya, faith.
Verse 56 (shiva.vidyeshvara.15.56)
bandhurājabhayādbuddhiḥ śraddhā sā ca kanīyasī sarvābhāve daridrastu vācā vā karmaṇā yajet
The conviction that arises out of fear of kinsmen or of the king is a lesser faith. When one has nothing at all, let the poor person worship through speech or through physical action.
Verse 57 (shiva.vidyeshvara.15.57)
vācikaṁ yajanaṁ vidyānmantrastotrajapādikam tīrthayātrā vratādyaṁ hi kāyikaṁ yajanaṁ viduḥ
Verbal worship should be known as mantra, hymns of praise, japa and the like; pilgrimage to holy places and the observance of vows are known as bodily worship.
Verse 58 (shiva.vidyeshvara.15.58)
yena kenāpyupāyena hyalpaṁ vā yadi vā bahu devatārpaṇabuddhyā ca kṛtaṁ bhogāya kalpate
By whatever means, whether little or much, whatever is done with the intention of offering it to the deity indeed serves for future enjoyment.
Verse 59 (shiva.vidyeshvara.15.59)
tapaścaryā ca dānaṁ ca kartavyamubhayaṁ sadā pratiśrayaṁ pradātavyaṁ svavarṇaṁ guṇaśobhitam
The practice of austerity and the giving of gifts — both should always be performed. Shelter should be given to one of one's own class who is adorned with good qualities —
Verse 60 (shiva.vidyeshvara.15.60)
devānāṁ tṛptaye'tyarthaṁ sarvabhogapradaṁ budhaiḥ ihāmutrottamaṁ janma sadā bhogaṁ labhed budhaḥ īśvarārpaṇabuddhyā hi kṛtvā mokṣaphalaṁ labhet
— exceedingly for the satisfaction of the gods, and this is declared by the wise to grant all enjoyment. Thus the wise one obtains an excellent birth here and hereafter, and enjoyment always; and performing these acts with the intention of offering them to the Lord, he obtains the fruit of liberation.
Verse 61 (shiva.vidyeshvara.15.61)
ya imaṁ paṭhate'dhyāyaṁ yaḥ śṛṇoti sadā naraḥ tasya vai dharmabuddhiśca jñānasiddhiḥ prajāyate
Whatever man always reads this chapter, or hears it, for him a righteous disposition and the accomplishment of knowledge are produced.
