Vidyeshvara Samhita · Chapter 16
The Rite of Parthiva-Linga Worship and Its Fruits
Verse 1 (shiva.vidyeshvara.16.1)
ṛṣaya ūcuḥ pārthivapratimāpūjāvidhānaṁ brūhi sattama yena pūjāvidhānena sarvābhīṣṭamavāpyate
The sages said: Tell us, O best of men, the method of worshipping the clay image, by which method of worship all desires are attained.
Verse 2 (shiva.vidyeshvara.16.2)
sūta uvāca susādhu pṛṣṭaṁ yuṣmābhiḥ sadā sarvārthadāyakam sadyo duḥkhasya śamanaṁ śṛṇuta prabravīmi vaḥ
Suta said: Very well have you asked — this teaching always bestows everything desired and immediately calms sorrow. Listen, I shall declare it to you.
Verse 3 (shiva.vidyeshvara.16.3)
apamṛtyuharaṁ kālamṛtyoścāpi vināśanam sadyaḥ kalatraputrādidhanadhānyapradaṁ dvijāḥ
It removes untimely death and destroys even death at its ordained time; O twice-born, it immediately grants wife, sons and the rest, wealth and grain.
Verse 4 (shiva.vidyeshvara.16.4)
annādibhojyaṁ vastrādi sarvamutpadyate yataḥ tato mṛdādipratimāpūjābhīṣṭapradā bhuvi
Since food and other things to eat, clothing and the rest all arise from the earth, therefore the worship of an image made of clay grants what is desired, in this world.
Verse 5 (shiva.vidyeshvara.16.5)
puruṣāṇāṁ ca nārīṇāmadhikāro'tra niścitam nadyāṁ taḍāge kūpe vā jalāntarmṛdamāharet
Both men and women are, it is settled, entitled to this worship. One should bring clay from within the water of a river, a pond, or a well.
Verse 6 (shiva.vidyeshvara.16.6)
saṁśodhya gandhacūrṇena peṣayitvā sumaṇḍape hastena pratimāṁ kuryātkṣīreṇa ca susaṁskṛtām
Having purified it with fragrant powder and kneaded it in a fine pavilion, one should fashion an image by hand, well-prepared with milk.
Verse 7 (shiva.vidyeshvara.16.7)
aṅgapratyaṅgakopetāmāyudhaiśca samanvitām padmāsanasthitāṁ kṛtvā pūjayedādareṇa hi
Having made it complete with limbs, endowed with weapons, and seated in the lotus posture, one should worship it with reverence.
Verse 8 (shiva.vidyeshvara.16.8)
vighneśādityaviṣṇūnāmambāyāśca śivasya ca śivasya śivaliṅgaṁ ca sarvadā pūjayed dvijaḥ
A twice-born should always worship Vighnesha (Ganesha), Aditya (Surya), Vishnu, the Mother Goddess, and Shiva — and, for Shiva, the Shivalinga.
Verse 9 (shiva.vidyeshvara.16.9)
ṣoḍaśairupacāraiśca kuryāttatphalasiddhaye puṣpeṇa prokṣaṇaṁ kuryādabhiṣekaṁ samantrakam
One should perform the worship with the sixteen offerings, for the accomplishment of its fruit. One should sprinkle the image with a flower and perform the ablution accompanied by mantras.
Verse 10 (shiva.vidyeshvara.16.10)
śālyannenaiva naivedyaṁ sarvaṁ kuḍavamānataḥ gṛhe tu kuḍavaṁ jñeyaṁ mānuṣe prasthamiṣyate
The food-offering should be entirely of rice, measured by the kudava. At home, a kudava should be the standard measure; for a human-sized image, a prastha is prescribed.
Verse 11 (shiva.vidyeshvara.16.11)
daive prasthatrayaṁ yogyaṁ svayambhoḥ prasthapañcakam evaṁ pūrṇaphalaṁ vidyādadhikaṁ vai dvayaṁ trayam
For a divinely-appointed image, three prasthas are fitting; for a self-manifest linga, five prasthas. Thus one should know the full fruit; twice or thrice as much yields still greater fruit.
Verse 12 (shiva.vidyeshvara.16.12)
sahasrapūjayā satyaṁ satyalokaṁ labhed dvijaḥ dvādaśāṅgulamāyāmaṁ dviguṇaṁ ca tato'dhikam
By a thousand such acts of worship, a twice-born obtains Satyaloka. The image's length should be twelve finger-widths, or twice that, or more.
Verse 13 (shiva.vidyeshvara.16.13)
pramāṇamaṅgulasyaikaṁ tadūrdhvaṁ pañcakatrayam ayodārukṛtaṁ pātraṁ śivamityucyate budhaiḥ
Its measure may be one finger-width up to fifteen. A vessel made of iron or wood, in the linga's form, is called "Shiva" by the wise.
Verse 14 (shiva.vidyeshvara.16.14)
tadaṣṭabhāgaḥ prasthaḥ syāttaccatuṣkuḍavaṁ matam daśaprasthaṁ śataprasthaṁ sahasraprasthameva ca
An eighth part of that measure is a prastha, held to equal four kudavas. The offering may be measured as ten prasthas, a hundred prasthas, or even a thousand prasthas.
Verse 15 (shiva.vidyeshvara.16.15)
jalatailādigandhānāṁ yathāyogyaṁ ca mānataḥ mānuṣārṣasvayambhūnāṁ mahāpūjeti kathyate
Water, oil, and fragrant substances given according to due measure — for man-made, sage-established, and self-manifest images, this is called the "great worship."
Verse 16 (shiva.vidyeshvara.16.16)
abhiṣekādātmaśuddhirgandhātpuṇyamavāpyate āyustṛptiśca naivedyād dhūpādarthamavāpyate
From the ablution comes purification of the self; from fragrance, merit is obtained. From the food-offering come longevity and satisfaction; from incense, wealth is obtained.
Verse 17 (shiva.vidyeshvara.16.17)
dīpājjñānamavāpnoti tāmbūlādbhogamāpnuyāt tasmātsnānādikaṁ ṣaṭkaṁ prayatnena prasādhayet
From the lamp, one obtains knowledge; from betel, one obtains enjoyment. Therefore one should, with effort, accomplish this sixfold offering beginning with the bathing.
Verse 18 (shiva.vidyeshvara.16.18)
namaskāro japaścaiva sarvābhīṣṭapradāvubhau pūjānte ca sadā kāryau bhogamokṣārthibhirnaraiḥ
Prostration and japa — both grant all that is desired. They should always be performed at the end of worship by men who seek either enjoyment or liberation.
Verse 19 (shiva.vidyeshvara.16.19)
sampūjya manasā pūrvaṁ kuryāttattatsadā naraḥ devānāṁ pūjayā caiva tattallokamavāpnuyāt
Having first worshipped mentally, a man should always perform each such act accordingly. By the worship of the deities, he obtains their respective worlds.
Verse 20 (shiva.vidyeshvara.16.20)
tadavāntaraloke ca yatheṣṭaṁ bhogyamāpyate tadviśeṣānpravakṣyāmi śṛṇuta śraddhayā dvijāḥ
And in the intermediate worlds subordinate to those, whatever enjoyment is desired is obtained. O twice-born, I shall now declare the particulars of this — listen with faith.
Verse 21 (shiva.vidyeshvara.16.21)
vighneśapūjayā samyagbhūrloke'bhīṣṭamāpnuyāt śukravāre caturthyāñca site śrāvaṇabhādrake
By properly worshipping Vighnesha, one obtains what is desired in the earthly world — on Friday, on the fourth lunar day, in the bright fortnight, in Shravana and Bhadrapada,
Verse 22 (shiva.vidyeshvara.16.22)
bhiṣagṛkṣe dhanurmāse vighneśaṁ vidhivadyajet śataṁ pūjā sahasraṁ vā tatsaṅkhyākadinairvrajet
under the Ashlesha constellation, or in the month of Dhanu — one should worship Vighnesha according to rule. A hundred or a thousand acts of worship should be performed over that same number of days.
Verse 23 (shiva.vidyeshvara.16.23)
devāgniśraddhayā nityaṁ putradaṁ ceṣṭadaṁ nṛṇām sarvapāpapraśamanaṁ tattadduritanāśanam
Worship performed always with faith toward the deity and the sacred fire grants sons and whatever else is desired to men; it pacifies all sin and destroys those various evils.
Verse 24 (shiva.vidyeshvara.16.24)
vārapūjāṁ śivādīnāmātmaśuddhipradāṁ viduḥ tithinakṣatrayogānāmādhāraṁ sārvakāmikam
The worship on a particular weekday of Shiva and the other deities is known to grant purification of the self; it is the universal foundation for the merits of lunar days, constellations, and astrological conjunctions.
Verse 25 (shiva.vidyeshvara.16.25)
tathā vṛddhikṣayābhāvātpūrṇabrahmātmakaṁ viduḥ udayādudayaṁ vāro brahmaprabhṛtikarmaṇām
Likewise, because it is free from waxing and waning, it is known to be of the nature of the Full Brahman. The ritual day, reckoned from one sunrise to the next, is the basis for rites beginning with the worship of Brahma.
Verse 26 (shiva.vidyeshvara.16.26)
tithyādau devapūjā hi pūrṇabhogapradā nṛṇām pūrvabhāgaḥ pitṝṇāṁ tu niśiyuktaḥ praśasyate
Worship of the gods performed at the beginning of the lunar day indeed grants complete enjoyment to men. The earlier portion of the tithi, when joined with night, is praised as belonging to the ancestors.
Verse 27 (shiva.vidyeshvara.16.27)
parabhāgastu devānāṁ divāyuktaḥ praśasyate udayavyāpinī grāhyā madhyāhne yadi sā tithiḥ
The later portion, joined with day, is praised as belonging to the gods. That tithi which pervades sunrise should be taken as the ruling one; if not, then the one prevailing at midday.
Verse 28 (shiva.vidyeshvara.16.28)
devakārye tathā grāhyāstithiṛkṣādikāḥ śubhāḥ samyagvicārya vārādīnkuryātpūjājapādikam
Likewise, for the affairs of the gods, auspicious lunar days, constellations, and the like should be adopted. Having properly determined the weekday and so forth, one should perform worship, japa, and the rest.
Verse 29 (shiva.vidyeshvara.16.29)
pūrjāyate hyaneneti vedeṣvarthasya yojanā pūrbhogaphalasiddhiśca jāyate tena karmaṇā
"By this, fullness is brought forth" — this is how the word's meaning is understood in the Vedas; and from that rite arises the accomplishment of the fruit of that fullness and enjoyment.
Verse 30 (shiva.vidyeshvara.16.30)
manobhāvāṁstathā jñānamiṣṭabhogārthayojanāt pūjāśabdārtha evaṁ hi viśruto lokavedayoḥ
Likewise, mental dispositions and knowledge arise through the connection with the desired object of enjoyment. Thus is the meaning of the word "puja" renowned both in common usage and in the Veda.
Verse 31 (shiva.vidyeshvara.16.31)
nityaṁ naimittikaṁ kālātsadyaḥ kāmye svanuṣṭhite nityaṁ māsaṁ ca pakṣaṁ ca varṣaṁ caiva yathākramam
Worship is obligatory, occasional, or performed for a desired object — such desired-object worship, once duly performed, yields its fruit at once. The fruit of obligatory rites accrues daily, monthly, fortnightly, and yearly, in due order.
Verse 32 (shiva.vidyeshvara.16.32)
tattatkarmaphalaprāptistādṛkpāpakṣayaḥ kramāt mahāgaṇapateḥ pūjā caturthyāṁ kṛṣṇapakṣake
The attainment of the fruit of each respective rite, and the corresponding destruction of sin, proceed accordingly. Worship of the great Ganapati on the fourth day of the dark fortnight —
Verse 33 (shiva.vidyeshvara.16.33)
pakṣapāpakṣayakarī pakṣabhogaphalapradā caitre caturthyāṁ pūjā ca kṛtā māsaphalapradā
— destroys sin for a fortnight and grants the fruit of enjoyment for a fortnight. Worship performed on the fourth day in the month of Chaitra grants fruit for a month.
Verse 34 (shiva.vidyeshvara.16.34)
varṣabhogapradā jñeyā kṛtā vai siṁhabhādrake śrāvaṇādityavāre ca saptamyāṁ hastabhe dine
Worship performed in the month of Bhadrapada, when the sun is in Leo, should be known to grant enjoyment for a year. And on Sunday in Shravana, on the seventh lunar day, on a day under the Hasta constellation,
Verse 35 (shiva.vidyeshvara.16.35)
māghaśukle ca saptamyāmādityayajanaṁ caret jyeṣṭhabhādrakasaumye ca dvādaśyāṁ śravaṇarkṣake
and on the seventh of the bright fortnight of Magha, one should worship Aditya, the Sun. And in Jyeshtha or Bhadrapada, on Wednesday, on the twelfth lunar day, under the Shravana constellation —
Verse 36 (shiva.vidyeshvara.16.36)
kṛtaṁ śrīviṣṇuyajanamiṣṭasampatkaraṁ viduḥ śrāvaṇe viṣṇuyajanamiṣṭārogyapradaṁ bhavet
— worship of Sri Vishnu performed then is known to bring about desired prosperity. Worship of Vishnu in Shravana grants the desired good health.
Verse 37 (shiva.vidyeshvara.16.37)
gavādīndvādaśānarthānsāṅgāndattvā tu yatphalam tatphalaṁ samavāpnoti dvādaśyāṁ viṣṇutarpaṇāt
Whatever fruit is obtained by giving the twelve items beginning with a cow, together with their accessories, that very fruit is fully obtained through the propitiation of Vishnu on the twelfth lunar day.
Verse 38 (shiva.vidyeshvara.16.38)
dvādaśyāṁ dvādaśānviprān viṣṇordvādaśanāmataḥ ṣoḍaśairupacāraiśca yajettatprītimāpnuyāt
On the twelfth lunar day, one should worship twelve brahmins by invoking the twelve names of Vishnu, with the sixteen offerings — thus one obtains his favor.
Verse 39 (shiva.vidyeshvara.16.39)
evaṁ ca sarvadevānāṁ tattaddvādaśanāmakaiḥ dvādaśabrahmayajanaṁ tattatprītikaraṁ bhavet
And likewise, worship of the twelve brahmins with the respective twelve names of all the gods brings about the favor of each respective deity.
Verse 40 (shiva.vidyeshvara.16.40)
karkaṭe somavāre ca navamyāṁ mṛgaśīrṣake ambāṁ yajed bhūtikāmaḥ sarvabhogaphalapradām
On Monday, when the moon is in Cancer, on the ninth lunar day, under the Mrigashirsha constellation, one who desires prosperity should worship the Mother Goddess Amba, who grants the fruit of all enjoyment.
Verse 41 (shiva.vidyeshvara.16.41)
āśvayukchuklanavamī sarvābhīṣṭaphalapradā ādivāre caturdaśyāṁ kṛṣṇapakṣe viśeṣataḥ
The ninth of the bright fortnight of the month Ashvin grants the fruit of all that is desired. On Sunday, on the fourteenth lunar day of the dark fortnight, especially —
Verse 42 (shiva.vidyeshvara.16.42)
ārdrāyāṁ ca mahārdrāyāṁ śivapūjā viśiṣyate māghakṛṣṇacaturdaśyāṁ sarvābhīṣṭaphalapradā
— and under the Ardra and the Great Ardra constellations, worship of Shiva is especially excellent. On the fourteenth of the dark fortnight of Magha, it grants the fruit of all that is desired,
Verse 43 (shiva.vidyeshvara.16.43)
āyuṣkarī mṛtyuharā sarvasiddhikarī nṛṇām jyeṣṭhamāse mahārdrāyāṁ caturdaśīdine'pi ca
grants longevity, removes death, and brings about all accomplishments for men; and also on the fourteenth day under the Great Ardra in the month of Jyeshtha,
Verse 44 (shiva.vidyeshvara.16.44)
mārgaśīrṣārdrakāyāṁ vā ṣoḍaśairupacārakaiḥ tattanmūrtiśivaṁ pūjya tasya vai pādadarśanam
or under Ardra in Margashirsha — having worshipped Shiva in his respective form with the sixteen offerings, the very sight of his feet is obtained thereby.
Verse 45 (shiva.vidyeshvara.16.45)
śivasya yajanaṁ jñeyaṁ bhogamokṣapradaṁ nṛṇām vārādidevayajanaṁ kārtike hi viśiṣyate
The worship of Shiva should be known to grant both enjoyment and liberation to men. The worship of the deities on their respective days is especially distinguished in the month of Kartika.
Verse 46 (shiva.vidyeshvara.16.46)
kārtike māsi samprāpte sarvāndevānyajed budhaḥ dānena tapasā homairjapena niyamena ca
When the month of Kartika has arrived, the wise man should worship all the gods, through charity, austerity, fire-offerings, japa, and the observance of vows,
Verse 47 (shiva.vidyeshvara.16.47)
ṣoḍaśairupacāraiśca pratimāvipramantrakaiḥ brāhmaṇānāṁ bhojanena niṣkāmārtiharo bhavet
and with the sixteen offerings, through images, brahmins, and mantras. Through the feeding of brahmins, one becomes free of desire and a remover of affliction.
Verse 48 (shiva.vidyeshvara.16.48)
kārtike devayajanaṁ sarvabhogapradaṁ bhavet vyādhīnāṁ haraṇaṁ caiva bhavedbhūtagrahakṣayaḥ
Worship of the gods in Kartika grants all enjoyment; it removes diseases and brings about the destruction of malevolent spirits and planetary afflictions.
Verse 49 (shiva.vidyeshvara.16.49)

dīpasarṣapadānācca apasmārakṣayo bhavet kṛttikāsomavāreṣu śivasya yajanaṁ nṛṇām
By the gift of a lamp and mustard-seed, comes the destruction of epilepsy. As for men's worship of Shiva on Mondays under the Krittika constellation —
Verse 52 (shiva.vidyeshvara.16.52)

Verse 57 (shiva.vidyeshvara.16.57)
vandhyā suputraṁ labhate svarṇaraupyādidānataḥ kṛttikāśanivāreṣu dikpālānāṁ ca vandanam
By the gift of gold, silver, and the like, a barren woman obtains a good son. Under Krittika on Saturdays, and honoring the guardians of the directions —
Verse 58 (shiva.vidyeshvara.16.58)
diggajānāṁ ca nāgānāṁ setupānāṁ ca pūjanam tryambakasya ca rudrasya viṣṇoḥ pāpaharasya ca
— and the worship of the elephants of the directions, of the serpent-deities, and of the guardians of the sacred crossing; and of Tryambaka (Shiva), of Rudra, and of Vishnu who removes sin;
Verse 59 (shiva.vidyeshvara.16.59)
jñānadaṁ brahmaṇaścaiva dhanvantaryaśvinostathā rogāpamṛtyuharaṇaṁ tatkālavyādhiśāntidam
and the worship of Brahma, who bestows knowledge, and of Dhanvantari and the two Ashvin gods, removes disease and untimely death, and grants the pacification of ailments particular to that time.
Verse 60 (shiva.vidyeshvara.16.60)
lavaṇāyasatailānāṁ māṣādīnāṁ ca dānataḥ trikaṭuphalagandhānāṁ jalādīnāṁ ca dānataḥ
By the gift of salt, iron, and oil, and of black gram and the like; by the gift of the three pungent spices, fruit, fragrant substances, water and the like —
Verse 61 (shiva.vidyeshvara.16.61)
dravāṇāṁ kaṭhinānāṁ ca prasthena palamānataḥ svargaprāptirdhanurmāse hyuṣaḥkāle ca pūjanam
— of liquid and solid things, measured by the prastha or the pala, comes the attainment of heaven. And worship in the month of Dhanu, at the time of dawn —
Verse 62 (shiva.vidyeshvara.16.62)
śivādīnāṁ ca sarveṣāṁ kramādvai sarvasiddhaye śālyannasya haviṣyasya naivedyaṁ śastamucyate
— of Shiva and all the others in due order, is for the attainment of all accomplishments. A food-offering of rice and of oblationary food is declared to be excellent.
Verse 63 (shiva.vidyeshvara.16.63)
vividhānnasya naivedyaṁ dhanurmāse viśiṣyate mārgaśīrṣe'nnadasyaiva sarvamiṣṭaphalaṁ bhavet
A food-offering of various kinds of food is especially distinguished in the month of Dhanu. In Margashirsha, for one who gives food, every desired fruit is obtained —
Verse 64 (shiva.vidyeshvara.16.64)
pāpakṣayaṁ ceṣṭasiddhiṁ cārogyaṁ dharmameva ca samyagvedaparijñānaṁ sadanuṣṭhānameva ca
destruction of sin, accomplishment of what is desired, good health, and righteousness; complete knowledge of the Vedas, and the performance of proper conduct —
Verse 65 (shiva.vidyeshvara.16.65)
ihāmutra mahābhogānante yogaṁ ca śāśvatam vedāntajñānasiddhiṁ ca mārgaśīrṣānnado labhet
great enjoyments here and hereafter, eternal union with the Divine at the end, and the accomplishment of the knowledge of Vedanta — one who gives food in Margashirsha obtains all these.
Verse 66 (shiva.vidyeshvara.16.66)
mārgaśīrṣe hyuṣaḥkāle dinatrayamathāpi vā yajed devānbhogakāmo nādhanurmāsiko bhavet
In Margashirsha, at the time of dawn, for three days or otherwise, one who desires enjoyment should worship the gods; but one doing so is not a full observer of the Dhanurmasa vow.
Verse 67 (shiva.vidyeshvara.16.67)
yāvatsaṅgavakālaṁ tu dhanurmāso vidhīyate dhanurmāse nirāhāro māsamātraṁ jitendriyaḥ
The Dhanurmasa observance is prescribed up to the time of mid-morning each day. During the Dhanurmasa, one should fast, with senses controlled, for the entire month.
Verse 68 (shiva.vidyeshvara.16.68)
āmadhyāhnaṁ japed vipro gāyatrīṁ vedamātaram pañcākṣarādikānmantrānpaścādāsuptikaṁ japet
A brahmin should recite the Gayatri, the Mother of the Vedas, until midday; afterward he should recite the Panchakshara and other mantras until the time of sleep.
Verse 69 (shiva.vidyeshvara.16.69)
jñānaṁ labdhvā ca dehānte vipro muktimavāpnuyāt anyeṣāṁ naranārīṇāṁ triḥsnānena japena ca
Having attained knowledge, a brahmin obtains liberation at the end of the body. For other men and women, through bathing three times daily and through japa —
Verse 70 (shiva.vidyeshvara.16.70)
sadā pañcākṣarasyaiva viśuddhaṁ jñānamāpyate iṣṭamantrānsadā japtvā mahāpāpakṣayaṁ labhet
— always of the Panchakshara mantra alone, pure knowledge is obtained. Always reciting one's chosen mantras, one attains the destruction of great sins.
Verse 71 (shiva.vidyeshvara.16.71)
dhanurmāse viśeṣeṇa mahānaivedyamācaret śālitaṇḍulabhāreṇa marīcaprasthakena ca
In the month of Dhanu, one should specially perform the "great food-offering" — with a load of rice grains and a prastha of pepper,
Verse 72 (shiva.vidyeshvara.16.72)
gaṇanād dvādaśaṁ sarvaṁ madhvājyakuḍavena hi droṇayuktena mudgena dvādaśavyañjanena ca
counting twelve of each: with a kudava of honey and of ghee, a drona of green gram, and twelve side-dishes,
Verse 73 (shiva.vidyeshvara.16.73)
ghṛtapakvairapūpaiśca modakaiḥ śālikādibhiḥ dvādaśaiśca dadhikṣīrairdvādaśaprasthakena ca
with cakes fried in ghee, sweets and rice-preparations, twelve each of curd and milk, and twelve prasthas of each,
Verse 74 (shiva.vidyeshvara.16.74)
nārikelaphalādīnāṁ tathā gaṇanayā saha dvādaśakramukairyuktaṁ ṣaṭtriṁśatpatrakairyutam
and likewise with coconuts and other fruits counted in twelves, accompanied by twelve areca nuts and thirty-six betel leaves,
Verse 75 (shiva.vidyeshvara.16.75)
karpūrakhuracūrṇena pañcasaugandhikairyutam tāmbūlayuktaṁ tu yadā mahānaivedyalakṣaṇam
with camphor and khura powder, joined with the five fragrant substances, together with betel — this, then, is the mark of the "great food-offering."
Verse 76 (shiva.vidyeshvara.16.76)
mahānaivedyametadvai devatārpaṇapūrvakam varṇānukramapūrveṇa tadbhaktebhyaḥ pradāpayet
This "great food-offering," having first been offered to the deity, should then be distributed to devotees in the proper order of the social classes.
Verse 77 (shiva.vidyeshvara.16.77)
evaṁ caudananaivedyādbhūmau rāṣṭrapatirbhavet mahānaivedyadānena naraḥ svargamavāpnuyāt
Thus, by the food-offering of cooked rice, one becomes a ruler of a kingdom on earth; by the gift of the "great food-offering," a man obtains heaven.
Verse 78 (shiva.vidyeshvara.16.78)
mahānaivedyadānena sahasreṇa dvijarṣabhāḥ satyalokaṁ ca talloke pūrṇamāyuravāpnuyāt
O bulls among the twice-born, by the gift of the "great food-offering" a thousand times, one obtains Satyaloka and a full lifespan in that world.
Verse 79 (shiva.vidyeshvara.16.79)
sahasrāṇāṁ ca triṁśatyā mahānaivedyadānataḥ tadūrdhvalokamāpyaiva na punarjanmabhāgbhavet
By the gift of the "great food-offering" thirty thousand times, having attained the world above that, one does not become subject to rebirth again.
Verse 80 (shiva.vidyeshvara.16.80)
sahasrāṇāṁ ca ṣaṭtriṁśajjanmanaivedyamīritam tāvannaivedyadānaṁ tu mahāpūrṇaṁ taducyate
The offering given thirty-six thousand times is called the "birth food-offering." That much of a food-offering given is called "the Great Full Offering."
Verse 81 (shiva.vidyeshvara.16.81)
mahāpūrṇasya naivedyaṁ janmanaivedyamiṣyate janmanaivedyadānena punarjanma na vidyate
The food-offering of the "Great Full Offering" is regarded as the "birth food-offering." By the gift of the birth food-offering, there is no more rebirth.
Verse 82 (shiva.vidyeshvara.16.82)
ūrje māsi dine puṇye janmanaivedyamācaret saṅkrāntipātajanmarkṣapaurṇamāsyādisaṁyute
One should perform the "birth food-offering" in the month of Urja (Kartika), on an auspicious day — one joined with a solar transition, an eclipse-node, one's birth-star, a full-moon day, or the like.
Verse 83 (shiva.vidyeshvara.16.83)
abdajanmadine kuryājjanmanaivedyamuttamam māsāntareṣu janmarkṣapūrṇayogadine'pi ca
One should perform the excellent "birth food-offering" on the annual birthday, or in the other months on a day when the constellation is fully in conjunction with one's birth-star.
Verse 84 (shiva.vidyeshvara.16.84)
melane ca śanairvāpi tāvatsāhasramācaret janmanaivedyadānena janmārpaṇaphalaṁ labhet
Or, gradually, at each such conjunction, one should perform it that many thousand times. By the gift of the "birth food-offering," one obtains the fruit of the "offering of one's birth."
Verse 85 (shiva.vidyeshvara.16.85)
janmārpaṇācchivaḥ prītaḥ svasāyujyaṁ dadāti hi idaṁ tajjanmanaivedyaṁ śivasyaiva pradāpayet
Pleased by this offering of one's birth, Shiva indeed grants union with his own being. This "birth food-offering" should be given to Shiva alone.
Verse 86 (shiva.vidyeshvara.16.86)
yoniliṅgasvarūpeṇa śivo janmanirūpakaḥ tasmājjanmanivṛttyarthaṁ janmapūjā śivasya hi
In the form of the yoni-linga, Shiva is the one who ordains birth. Therefore, for the sake of ending the cycle of birth, the "birth-worship" is offered to Shiva alone.
Verse 87 (shiva.vidyeshvara.16.87)
bindunādātmakaṁ sarvaṁ jagatsthāvarajaṅgamam binduḥ śaktiḥ śivo nādaḥ śivaśaktyātmakaṁ jagat
This entire universe, moving and unmoving, is of the nature of Bindu and Nada. Bindu is Shakti, Nada is Shiva; the universe is of the nature of Shiva and Shakti united.
Verse 88 (shiva.vidyeshvara.16.88)
nādādhāramidaṁ bindurbindvādhāramidaṁ jagat jagadādhārabhūtau hi bindunādau vyavasthitau
This Bindu has Nada as its support; this universe has Bindu as its support. Bindu and Nada indeed stand established as the very foundation of the universe.
Verse 89 (shiva.vidyeshvara.16.89)
bindunādayutaṁ sarvaṁ sakalīkaraṇaṁ bhavet sakalīkaraṇājjanma jagatprāpnotyasaṁśayam
Everything joined with Bindu and Nada becomes "manifested." From this manifesting process, the universe undoubtedly attains birth.
Verse 90 (shiva.vidyeshvara.16.90)
bindunādātmakaṁ liṅgaṁ jagatkāraṇamucyate bindurdevī śivo nādaḥ śivaliṅgaṁ tu kathyate
The linga, of the nature of Bindu and Nada, is called the cause of the universe. Bindu is the Goddess, Nada is Shiva; together it is called the Shivalinga.
Verse 91 (shiva.vidyeshvara.16.91)
tasmājjanmanivṛttyarthaṁ śivaliṅgaṁ prapūjayet mātā devī bindurūpā nādarūpaḥ śivaḥ pitā
Therefore, for the sake of ending the cycle of birth, one should worship the Shivalinga. The Goddess, in the form of Bindu, is the mother; Shiva, in the form of Nada, is the father.
Verse 92 (shiva.vidyeshvara.16.92)
pūjitābhyāṁ pitṛbhyāṁ tu paramānanda eva hi paramānandalābhārthaṁ śivaliṅgaṁ prapūjayet
From these two divine parents, when worshipped, comes indeed supreme bliss. For the sake of attaining that supreme bliss, one should worship the Shivalinga.
Verse 93 (shiva.vidyeshvara.16.93)
sā devī jagatāṁ mātā sa śivo jagataḥ pitā pitroḥ śuśrūṣake nityaṁ kṛpādhikyaṁ hi vardhate
She, the Goddess, is the mother of the worlds; He, Shiva, is the father of the world. For one who ever serves these two parents, their abundant grace continually increases.
Verse 94 (shiva.vidyeshvara.16.94)
kṛpayāntargataiśvaryaṁ pūjakasya dadāti hi tasmādantargatānandalābhārthaṁ munipuṅgavāḥ
By their grace, they bestow inward sovereignty upon the worshipper. Therefore, O foremost of sages, for the sake of attaining that inward bliss —
Verse 95 (shiva.vidyeshvara.16.95)
pitṛmātṛsvarūpeṇa śivaliṅgaṁ prapūjayet bhargaḥ puruṣarūpo hi bhargā prakṛtirucyate
— one should worship the Shivalinga in the form of Father and Mother. Bharga, the Radiant One, is of the form of Purusha; Bharga in the feminine is said to be Prakriti.
Verse 96 (shiva.vidyeshvara.16.96)
avyaktāntaradhiṣṭhānaṁ garbhaḥ puruṣa ucyate suvyaktāntaradhiṣṭhānaṁ garbhaḥ prakṛtirucyate
That seed whose inner ground is unmanifest is called Purusha; that seed whose inner ground is well-manifest is called Prakriti.
Verse 97 (shiva.vidyeshvara.16.97)
puruṣastvādigarbho hi garbhavāñjanako yataḥ puruṣātprakṛtau yuktaṁ prathamaṁ janma kathyate
Purusha is indeed the primordial seed, since he, possessing the seed, is the begetter. The union of Purusha with Prakriti is called the "first birth."
Verse 98 (shiva.vidyeshvara.16.98)
prakṛtervyaktatāṁ yātaṁ dvitīyaṁ janma kathyate janma janturmṛtyujanma puruṣātpratipadyate
That which goes forth into manifestation from Prakriti is called the "second birth." From this birth, the creature comes into a birth bound to death.
Verse 99 (shiva.vidyeshvara.16.99)
anyato bhāvyate'vaśyaṁ māyayā janma kathyate jīryate janmakālādyattasmājjīva iti smṛtaḥ
It is inevitably brought into being by another power, Maya — this is called its birth. Because it decays from the very moment of its birth, it is therefore called "jiva," the living being.
Verse 100 (shiva.vidyeshvara.16.100)
janyate tanyate pāśairjīvaśabdārtha eva hi janmapāśanivṛttyarthaṁ janmaliṅgaṁ prapūjayet
"It is born, and it is bound by fetters" — this indeed is the meaning of the word "jiva." For the sake of ending the bondage of birth, one should worship the birth-linga.
Verse 101 (shiva.vidyeshvara.16.101)
bhaṁ vṛddhiṁ gacchatītyarthādbhagaḥ prakṛtirucyate prākṛtaiḥ śabdamātrādyaiḥ prākṛtendriyabhojanāt
From the meaning "that which goes to increase," Prakriti is called "Bhaga." By the enjoyment, through the material senses, of the objects of the senses such as sound —
Verse 102 (shiva.vidyeshvara.16.102)
bhagasyedaṁ bhogamiti śabdārtho mukhyataḥ śrutaḥ mukhyo bhagastu prakṛtirbhagavāñchiva ucyate
— "this is the enjoyment belonging to Bhaga" — such is the primary meaning of the word, as heard in scripture. The primary Bhaga is Prakriti; but Shiva is called "Bhagavan."
Verse 103 (shiva.vidyeshvara.16.103)
bhagavānbhogadātā hi nānyo bhogapradāyakaḥ bhagasvāmī ca bhagavānbharga ityucyate budhaiḥ
Bhagavan is indeed the giver of enjoyment; there is no other bestower of enjoyment. And being the Lord of Bhaga, Bhagavan is called "Bharga" by the wise.
Verse 104 (shiva.vidyeshvara.16.104)
bhagena sahitaṁ liṅgaṁ bhagaṁ liṅgena saṁyutam ihāmutra ca bhogārthaṁ nityabhogārthameva ca
The linga is united with bhaga, and bhaga is joined with the linga, for the sake of enjoyment both here and hereafter, and indeed for eternal enjoyment.
Verse 105 (shiva.vidyeshvara.16.105)
bhagavantaṁ mahādevaṁ śivaliṅgaṁ prapūjayet lokaprasavitā sūryastaccihnaṁ prasavādbhavet
One should worship the Shivalinga as the blessed Mahadeva. The Sun is the begetter of the world; that emblem arises from the very principle of begetting.
Verse 106 (shiva.vidyeshvara.16.106)
liṅge prasūtikartāraṁ liṅginaṁ puruṣo yajet liṅgārthagamakaṁ cihnaṁ liṅgamityabhidhīyate
A man should worship, in the linga, the possessor of the linga who is the agent of creation. An emblem that conveys its underlying meaning is called a "linga," a sign.
Verse 107 (shiva.vidyeshvara.16.107)
liṅgamarthaṁ hi puruṣaṁ śivaṁ gamayatītyadaḥ śivaśaktyośca cihnasya melanaṁ liṅgamucyate
Because this emblem leads to its meaning, namely, Purusha, Shiva, it is called a "linga." And the union of the emblems of Shiva and Shakti is called the linga.
Verse 108 (shiva.vidyeshvara.16.108)
svacihnapūjanātprītaścihnakāryaṁ na vīyate cihnakāryaṁ tu janmādi janmādyaṁ vinivartate
Pleased by the worship of his own emblem, Shiva does not withhold the effect attributable to that emblem. And the effect of the emblem, namely birth and the rest, thereby ceases.
Verse 109 (shiva.vidyeshvara.16.109)
prākṛtaiḥ puruṣaiścāpi bāhyābhyantarasambhavaiḥ ṣoḍaśairupacāraiśca śivaliṅgaṁ prapūjayet
And also by ordinary people, using materials arising both externally and internally, one should worship the Shivalinga with the sixteen offerings.
Verse 110 (shiva.vidyeshvara.16.110)
evamādityavāre hi pūjā janmanivartikā ādivāre mahāliṅgaṁ praṇavenaiva pūjayet
Thus indeed, worship performed on Sunday puts an end to the cycle of birth. On Sunday, one should worship the Mahalinga with the Pranava, Om, alone.
Verse 111 (shiva.vidyeshvara.16.111)
ādivāre pañcagavyairabhiṣeko viśiṣyate gomayaṁ gojalaṁ kṣīraṁ dadhyājyaṁ pañcagavyakam
On Sunday, ablution with the five products of the cow is especially distinguished. Cow-dung, cow's urine, milk, curd, and ghee — these are the five cow-products.
Verse 112 (shiva.vidyeshvara.16.112)
kṣīrādyaṁ ca pṛthakcaiva madhunā cekṣusārakaiḥ gavyakṣīrānnanaivedyaṁ praṇavenaiva kārayet
And milk and the rest, each separately, together with honey and sugarcane-juice — the food-offering of cow's-milk rice should be prepared with the Pranava alone.
Verse 113 (shiva.vidyeshvara.16.113)
praṇavaṁ dhvaniliṅgaṁ tu nādaliṅgaṁ svayambhuvaḥ binduliṅgaṁ tu yantraṁ syānmakāraṁ tu pratiṣṭhitam
The Pranava is indeed the sound-linga, the resonance-linga of the self-manifest Shiva. The yantra is the bindu-linga; and the letter M is established there.
Verse 114 (shiva.vidyeshvara.16.114)
ukāraṁ caraliṅgaṁ syādakāraṁ guruvigraham ṣaḍliṅgapūjayā nityaṁ jīvanmukto na saṁśayaḥ
The letter U is the "moving linga"; the letter A is the form of the Guru. By the constant worship of these six lingas, one undoubtedly becomes liberated while living.
Verse 115 (shiva.vidyeshvara.16.115)
śivasya bhaktyā pūjā hi janmamuktikarī nṛṇām rudrākṣadhāraṇātpādamardhaṁ vai bhūtidhāraṇāt
Worship of Shiva performed with devotion grants men liberation from the cycle of birth. From wearing rudraksha, a quarter of the merit; from wearing sacred ash, indeed a half —
Verse 116 (shiva.vidyeshvara.16.116)
tripādaṁ mantrajāpyācca pūjayā pūrṇabhaktimān śivaliṅgaṁ ca bhaktaṁ ca pūjya mokṣaṁ labhennaraḥ
— from the recitation of mantra, three-quarters; and through worship performed with complete devotion — worshipping both the Shivalinga and the devotee of Shiva — a man obtains liberation.
Verse 117 (shiva.vidyeshvara.16.117)
ya imaṁ paṭhate'dhyāyaṁ śṛṇuyādvā samāhitaḥ tasyaiva śivabhaktiśca vardhate sudṛḍhā dvijāḥ
O twice-born, whoever, with focused attention, reads this chapter or listens to it — for him alone devotion to Shiva grows firm and strong.
