Rudra Samhita · Chapter 11
The Rite of Shiva Worship
Verse 1 (shiva.rudra.11.1)
ṛṣaya ūcuḥ | sūta sūta mahābhāga vyāsaśiṣya namo'stu te | śrāvitādyādbhutā śaivī kathā paramapāvanī
The sages said: O Suta, Suta, greatly fortunate one, disciple of Vyasa, salutations to you! You have made us hear this wondrous, supremely purifying Shaiva narrative.
Verse 2 (shiva.rudra.11.2)
tatrādbhutā mahādivyā liṅgotpattiḥ śrutā śubhā | śrutvā yasyāḥ prabhāvaṁ ca duḥkhanāśo bhavediha
In it we have heard the wondrous, most divine and auspicious origin of the linga, hearing whose glory alone sorrow is destroyed in this world.
Verse 3 (shiva.rudra.11.3)
brahmanāradasaṁvādamanusṛtya dayānidhe | śivārcanavidhiṁ brūhi yena tuṣṭo bhavecchivaḥ
O treasury of compassion, following the dialogue between Brahma and Narada, tell us the rite of worshipping Shiva, by which Shiva becomes pleased.
Verse 4 (shiva.rudra.11.4)
brāhmaṇaiḥ kṣatriyairvaiśyaiḥ śūdrairvā pūjyate śivaḥ | kathaṁ kāryaṁ ca tad brūhi yathā vyāsamukhācchrutam
How is Shiva worshipped by Brahmins, Kshatriyas, Vaishyas, or Shudras — tell us how it should be done, just as you heard it from the mouth of Vyasa.
Verse 5 (shiva.rudra.11.5)
tacchrutvā vacanaṁ teṣāṁ śarmadaṁ śrutisammatam | uvāca sakalaṁ prītyā munipraśnānusārataḥ
Hearing their words, which brought well-being and were sanctioned by the Vedas, he told everything with affection, in keeping with the sages' question.
Verse 6 (shiva.rudra.11.6)
sūta uvāca | sādhu pṛṣṭaṁ bhavadbhiśca tadrahasyaṁ munīśvarāḥ | tadahaṁ kathayāmyadya yathābuddhi yathāśrutam
Suta said: Well have you asked, O lords of sages, this secret; I shall now tell it as far as my own understanding and as I have heard it.
Verse 7 (shiva.rudra.11.7)
bhavadbhiḥ pṛcchyate yadvattathā vyāsena vai purā | pṛṣṭaṁ sanatkumārāya tacchrutaṁ hyupamanyunā
Just as you now ask, so too in the past Vyasa asked Sanatkumara, and Upamanyu heard it in turn.
Verse 8 (shiva.rudra.11.8)
tato vyāsena vai śrutvā śivapūjādikaṁ ca yat | mahyaṁ ca pāṭhitaṁ tena lokānāṁ hitakāmyayā
Then Vyasa, having heard the manner of Shiva-worship and the rest, taught it also to me, desiring the welfare of the worlds.
Verse 9 (shiva.rudra.11.9)
tacchrutaṁ caiva kṛṣṇena hyupamanyormahātmanaḥ | tadahaṁ kathayiṣyāmi yathā brahmāvadatpurā
That was heard by Krishna, Dvaipayana Vyasa, from the great soul Upamanyu; I shall now tell it just as Brahma spoke it long ago.
Verse 10 (shiva.rudra.11.10)
brahmovāca | śṛṇu nārada vakṣyāmi saṅkṣepālliṅgapūjanam | vaktuṁ varṣaśatenāpi na śakyaṁ vistarānmune
Brahma said: Listen, Narada, I shall tell you the worship of the linga in brief; O sage, even in a hundred years it could not be told in full detail.
Verse 11 (shiva.rudra.11.11)
evaṁ tu śāṅkaraṁ rūpaṁ sukhaṁ svacchaṁ sanātanam | pūjayetparayā bhaktyā sarvakāmaphalāptaye
Thus should the blissful, pure, eternal form of Shankara be worshipped with supreme devotion, for the attainment of the fruit of every desire.
Verse 12 (shiva.rudra.11.12)
dāridryaṁ rogaduḥkhaṁ ca pīḍanaṁ śatrusambhavam | pāpaṁ caturvidhaṁ tāvadyāvannārcayate śivam
Poverty, the suffering of disease, affliction arising from enemies, and sin — these four remain only for as long as one does not worship Shiva.
Verse 13 (shiva.rudra.11.13)
sampūjite śive deve sarvaduḥkhaṁ vilīyate | sampadyate sukhaṁ sarvaṁ paścānmuktiravāpyate
When the god Shiva is duly worshipped, all sorrow dissolves; every happiness is attained, and afterward liberation is obtained.
Verse 14 (shiva.rudra.11.14)
yo vai mānuṣyamāśritya mukhyaṁ santānataḥ sukham | tena pūjyo mahādevaḥ sarvakāryārthasādhakaḥ
Whoever, having taken up the human state, seeks happiness chiefly through progeny, should worship Mahadeva, the accomplisher of every purpose.
Verse 15 (shiva.rudra.11.15)
brāhmaṇāḥ kṣatriyā vaiśyāḥ śūdrāśca vidhivatkramāt | śaṅkarārcāṁ prakurvantu sarvakāmārthasiddhaye
Brahmins, Kshatriyas, Vaishyas and Shudras should each, in due order and according to rule, perform the worship of Shankara, for the fulfillment of every desire and purpose.
Verse 16 (shiva.rudra.11.16)
prātaḥkāle samutthāya muhūrte brahmasaṁjñake | gurośca smaraṇaṁ kṛtvā śambhoścaiva tathā punaḥ
Rising in the early morning at the hour called Brahma-muhurta, having first remembered one's guru, and then Shambhu again —
Verse 17 (shiva.rudra.11.17)
tīrthānāṁ smaraṇaṁ kṛtvā dhyānaṁ caiva harerapi | mamāpi nirjarāṇāṁ vai munyādīnāṁ tathā mune
having remembered the sacred fords, and meditated also upon Hari, and upon me, the immortals, and the sages, O sage —
Verse 18 (shiva.rudra.11.18)
tataḥ stotraṁ śambhunāma gṛhṇīyādvidhipūrvakam | tatotthāya malotsargaṁ dakṣiṇasyāṁ careddiśi
then one should recite, according to rule, a hymn of Shambhu's names; then, rising, one should go toward the south to relieve oneself.
Verse 19 (shiva.rudra.11.19)
ekānte tu vidhiṁ kuryānmalotsargasya yacchrutam | tadeva kathayāmyadya śṛṇvādhāya mano mune
In solitude one should follow the rule for relieving oneself as it has been transmitted; that very rule I now tell — listen, O sage, with your mind fixed.
Verse 20 (shiva.rudra.11.20)
śuddhāṁ mṛdaṁ dvijo lipyātpañcavāraṁ viśuddhaye | kṣatriyaśca caturvāraṁ vaiśyo vāratrayaṁ tathā
A twice-born should apply pure clay five times for purification; a Kshatriya four times, and a Vaishya three times.
Verse 21 (shiva.rudra.11.21)
śūdro dvivāraṁ ca mṛdaṁ gṛhṇīyādvidhiśuddhaye | gude vātha sakṛlliṅge vāramekaṁ prayatnataḥ
A Shudra should take clay twice for ritual purification; once on the anus, and once, with care, on the organ.
Verse 22 (shiva.rudra.11.22)
daśavāraṁ vāmahaste saptavāraṁ dvayostathā | pratyekaṁ pādayostāta trivāraṁ karayoḥ punaḥ
Ten times on the left hand, and seven times upon both hands together; O son, three times on each foot, and again three times on the hands.
Verse 23 (shiva.rudra.11.23)
strībhiśca śūdravatkāryaṁ mṛdāgrahaṇamuttamam | hastau pādau ca prakṣālya pūrvavanmṛdamāharet
By women too this excellent taking of clay should be done as for a Shudra; having washed the hands and feet, one should take clay as before.
Verse 24 (shiva.rudra.11.24)
dantakāṣṭhaṁ tataḥ kuryātsvavarṇakramato naraḥ
Then a man should use the tooth-twig according to the order proper to his own varna.
Verse 25 (shiva.rudra.11.25)
vipraḥ kuryāddantakāṣṭhaṁ dvādaśāṅgulamānataḥ | ekādaśāṅgulaṁ rājā vaiśyaḥ kuryāddaśāṅgulam
A Brahmin should use a tooth-twig of twelve fingers' measure; a king, one of eleven fingers; a Vaishya should use one of ten fingers.
Verse 26 (shiva.rudra.11.26)
śūdro navāṅgulaṁ kuryāditi mānamidaṁ smṛtam | kāladoṣaṁ vicāryeva mānaduṣṭaṁ vivarjayet
A Shudra should use one of nine fingers — this measure has been so remembered; considering the fault of the time, one should avoid a twig defective in measure.
Verse 27 (shiva.rudra.11.27)
ṣaṣṭyādyāmaśca navamī vratamastaṁ raverdinam | tathā śrāddhadinaṁ tāta niṣiddhaṁ radadhāvane
The sixth tithi and its kind, the twilight hour, the ninth tithi, a day of vow, sunset, and, O son, the day of shraddha — on all these the tooth-twig is forbidden.
Verse 28 (shiva.rudra.11.28)
snānaṁ tu vidhivatkāryaṁ tīrthādiṣu krameṇa tu | deśakālaviśeṣeṇa snānaṁ kāryaṁ samantrakam
The bath should be performed according to rule, in due order, at sacred fords and the like; suited to the particular place and time, it should be accompanied by mantras.
Verse 29 (shiva.rudra.11.29)
ācamya prathamaṁ tatra dhautavastrāṇi dhārayet | ekānte susthale sthitvā sandhyāvidhimathācaret
First sipping water there for purification, one should wear washed garments; sitting in solitude in a good place, one should then perform the rite of sandhya.
Verse 30 (shiva.rudra.11.30)
yathāyogyaṁ vidhiṁ kṛtvā pūjāvidhimathārabhet | manastu susthiraṁ kṛtvā pūjāgāraṁ praviśya ca
Having performed the rite as is proper, one should then begin the rite of worship; steadying the mind well, and entering the room of worship —
Verse 31 (shiva.rudra.11.31)
pūjāvidhiṁ samādāya svāsane hyupaviśya vai | nyāsādikaṁ vidhāyādau pūjayet kramaśo haram
taking up the articles of worship and sitting on one's own seat, having first performed nyasa and the rest, one should worship Hara in due order.
Verse 32 (shiva.rudra.11.32)
prathamaṁ ca gaṇādhīśaṁ dvārapālāṁstathaiva ca | dikpālāṁśca susampūjya paścātpīṭhaṁ prakalpayet
First worshipping well the Lord of the Ganas, and likewise the door-guardians and the guardians of the directions, one should thereafter prepare the pedestal.
Verse 33 (shiva.rudra.11.33)
athavāṣṭadalaṁ kṛtvā pūjādravyaṁ samīpataḥ | upaviśya tatastatra upaveśya śivaṁ prabhum
Or else, drawing an eight-petaled lotus, with the articles of worship close at hand, sitting there, and seating the Lord Shiva upon it —
Verse 34 (shiva.rudra.11.34)
ācamanatrayaṁ kṛtvā prakṣālya ca punaḥ karau | prāṇāyāmatrayaṁ kṛtvā madhye dhyāyecca tryambakam
performing three sippings of water, washing the hands again, and performing three pranayamas, one should then, in the midst, meditate on the three-eyed Lord.
Verse 35 (shiva.rudra.11.35)
pañcavaktraṁ daśabhujaṁ śuddhasphaṭikasannibham | sarvābharaṇasaṁyuktaṁ vyāghracarmottarīyakam
Five-faced, ten-armed, resembling pure crystal, adorned with every ornament, wearing a tiger-skin as his upper garment —
Verse 36 (shiva.rudra.11.36)
tasya sārūpyatāṁ smṛtvā dahetpāpaṁ naraḥ sadā | śivaṁ tataḥ samutthāpya pūjayetparameśvaram
remembering that very form, a man should ever burn away his sin; then, having invoked Shiva, one should worship the Supreme Lord.
Verse 37 (shiva.rudra.11.37)
dehaśuddhiṁ tataḥ kṛtvā mūlamantraṁ nyasetkramāt | sarvatra praṇavenaiva ṣaḍaṅganyāsamācaret
Then, having purified the body, one should place the root-mantra in due order; everywhere with the pranava alone one should perform the six-limbed nyasa.
Verse 38 (shiva.rudra.11.38)
kṛtvā hṛdi prayogaṁ ca tataḥ pūjāṁ samārabhet | pādyārghācamanārthaṁ ca pātrāṇi ca prakalpayet
Having done the application in the heart, one should then begin the worship, and prepare the vessels for the water of the feet, the offering, and the sipping.
