The Gods' Consecration of Kumara
Verse 1 (shiva.rudra.123.1)
ब्रह्मोवाच एतस्मिन्नन्तरे तत्र ददर्श रथमुत्तमम् । अद्भुतं शोभितं शश्वद्विश्वकर्मविनिर्मितम्
brahmovāca etasminnantare tatra dadarśa rathamuttamam adbhutaṁ śobhitaṁ śaśvadviśvakarmavinirmitam
Brahma said: Meanwhile, there he saw an excellent chariot, wondrous, ever resplendent, fashioned by Vishvakarma.
Verse 2 (shiva.rudra.123.2)
शतचक्रं सुविस्तीर्णं मनोयायि मनोहरम् । प्रस्थापितं च पार्वत्या वेष्टितं पार्षदैर्वरैः
śatacakraṁ suvistīrṇaṁ manoyāyi manoharam prasthāpitaṁ ca pārvatyā veṣṭitaṁ pārṣadairvaraiḥ
With a hundred wheels, vastly spacious, swift as thought, and enchanting — it had been sent by Parvati, and was surrounded by the finest attendants.
Verse 3 (shiva.rudra.123.3)
समारोहत्ततोऽनन्तो हृदयेन विदूयता । कार्त्तिकः परमज्ञानी परमेशानवीर्यजः
samārohattato'nanto hṛdayena vidūyatā kārttikaḥ paramajñānī parameśānavīryajaḥ
Then Kartika, the infinite one, of supreme knowledge, born of the seed of the Supreme Lord, mounted it, his heart aching within him.
Verse 4 (shiva.rudra.123.4)
तदैव कृत्तिकाः प्राप्य मुक्तकेश्यः शुचाऽऽतुराः । उन्मत्ता इव तत्रैव वक्तुमारेभिरे वचः
tadaiva kṛttikāḥ prāpya muktakeśyaḥ śucā''turāḥ unmattā iva tatraiva vaktumārebhire vacaḥ
At that very moment the Krittikas, coming there, their hair loosened, stricken with grief, as if maddened, began to speak, right there.
Verse 5 (shiva.rudra.123.5)
कृत्तिका ऊचुः । विहायाऽस्मान् कृपासिन्धो गच्छसि त्वं हि निर्दयः । नायं धर्मो मातृवर्गान् पालितो यत् सुतस्त्यजेत्
kṛttikā ūcuḥ vihāyā'smān kṛpāsindho gacchasi tvaṁ hi nirdayaḥ nāyaṁ dharmo mātṛvargān pālito yat sutastyajet
The Krittikas said: O ocean of compassion, leaving us behind, you go, merciless indeed! This is no dharma, that a son should abandon the mothers who reared him.
Verse 6 (shiva.rudra.123.6)
स्नेहेन वर्द्धितोऽस्माभिः पुत्रोऽस्माकं च धर्मतः । किं कुर्मः क्व च यास्यामो वयं किं करवाम ह
snehena varddhito'smābhiḥ putro'smākaṁ ca dharmataḥ kiṁ kurmaḥ kva ca yāsyāmo vayaṁ kiṁ karavāma ha
You have been raised by us with love, and are our son by dharma. What shall we do now, where shall we go, what are we to do?
Verse 7 (shiva.rudra.123.7)
इत्युक्त्वा कृत्तिकाः सर्वाः कृत्वा वक्षसि कार्त्तिकम् । द्रुतं मूर्च्छामवापुस्ताःसुतविच्छेदकारणात्
ityuktvā kṛttikāḥ sarvāḥ kṛtvā vakṣasi kārttikam drutaṁ mūrcchāmavāpustāḥsutavicchedakāraṇāt
Having said this, all the Krittikas, clasping Kartika to their breasts, swiftly fell into a swoon, from the grief of separation from their son.
Verse 8 (shiva.rudra.123.8)
ताः कुमारो बोधयित्वा अध्यात्मवचनेन वै । ताभिश्च पार्षदैः सार्द्धमारुरोह रथं मुने
tāḥ kumāro bodhayitvā adhyātmavacanena vai tābhiśca pārṣadaiḥ sārddhamāruroha rathaṁ mune
Kumara, reviving them with words of spiritual wisdom, O sage, then mounted the chariot, together with them and the attendants.
Verse 9 (shiva.rudra.123.9)
दृष्ट्वा श्रुत्वा मङ्गलानि बहूनि सुखदानि वै । कुमारः पार्षदैः सार्द्धं जगाम पितृमन्दिरम्
dṛṣṭvā śrutvā maṅgalāni bahūni sukhadāni vai kumāraḥ pārṣadaiḥ sārddhaṁ jagāma pitṛmandiram
Seeing and hearing many auspicious and joy-giving omens, Kumara, together with the attendants, went toward his father's abode.
Verse 10 (shiva.rudra.123.10)
दक्षेण नन्दियुक्तश्च मनोयायिरथेन च । कुमारः प्राप कैलासं न्यग्रोधाऽक्षयमूलके
dakṣeṇa nandiyuktaśca manoyāyirathena ca kumāraḥ prāpa kailāsaṁ nyagrodhā'kṣayamūlake
With Daksha and Nandi beside him, in that mind-swift chariot, Kumara reached Kailasa, by the eternal-rooted banyan tree.
Verse 11 (shiva.rudra.123.11)
तत्र तस्थौ कृत्तिकाभिः पार्षदप्रवरैः सह । कुमारः शाङ्करिः प्रीतो नानालीलाविशारदः
tatra tasthau kṛttikābhiḥ pārṣadapravaraiḥ saha kumāraḥ śāṅkariḥ prīto nānālīlāviśāradaḥ
There Kumara, son of Shankara, delighted and skilled in manifold divine sports, remained together with the Krittikas and the foremost attendants.
Verse 12 (shiva.rudra.123.12)
तदा सर्वे सुरगणा ऋषयः सिद्धचारणाः । विष्णुना ब्रह्मणा सार्द्धं समाचख्युस्तदागमम्
tadā sarve suragaṇā ṛṣayaḥ siddhacāraṇāḥ viṣṇunā brahmaṇā sārddhaṁ samācakhyustadāgamam
Then all the hosts of gods, the sages, the siddhas and charanas, together with Vishnu and Brahma, announced his arrival.
Verse 13 (shiva.rudra.123.13)
तदा दृष्ट्वा च गाङ्गेयं ययौ प्रमुदितश्शिवः । अन्यैः समेतो हरिणा ब्रह्मणा च सुरर्षिभिः
tadā dṛṣṭvā ca gāṅgeyaṁ yayau pramuditaśśivaḥ anyaiḥ sameto hariṇā brahmaṇā ca surarṣibhiḥ
Then, seeing Gangeya, Shiva, greatly delighted, went forth, accompanied by others — by Hari, by Brahma, and by the divine sages.
Verse 14 (shiva.rudra.123.14)
शङ्खाश्च बहवो नेदुर्भेरी तूर्याण्यनेकशः । उत्सवः सुमहानासीद्देवानां तुष्टचेतसाम्
śaṅkhāśca bahavo nedurbherī tūryāṇyanekaśaḥ utsavaḥ sumahānāsīddevānāṁ tuṣṭacetasām
Many conch-shells resounded, and drums and countless other instruments; a very great festival arose among the gods, their hearts delighted.
Verse 15 (shiva.rudra.123.15)
तदानीमेव तं सर्वे वीरभद्रादयो गणाः । कुर्वन्तः स्वन्वयुः केलिं नानातालधरस्वराः
tadānīmeva taṁ sarve vīrabhadrādayo gaṇāḥ kurvantaḥ svanvayuḥ keliṁ nānātāladharasvarāḥ
At that very moment, all the ganas headed by Virabhadra followed after him, performing their play, with voices set to manifold rhythms.
Verse 16 (shiva.rudra.123.16)
स्तावकाः स्तूयमानाश्च चक्रुस्ते गुणकीर्त्तनम् । जयशब्दं नमश्शब्दं कुर्वाणाः प्रीतमानसाः
stāvakāḥ stūyamānāśca cakruste guṇakīrttanam jayaśabdaṁ namaśśabdaṁ kurvāṇāḥ prītamānasāḥ
Panegyrists, praising him, proclaimed his virtues, and with joyful minds raised cries of "Victory!" and "Salutation!"
Verse 17 (shiva.rudra.123.17)
द्रष्टुं ययुस्तं शरजं शिवात्मजमनुत्तमम्
draṣṭuṁ yayustaṁ śarajaṁ śivātmajamanuttamam
They went forth to see him, born of the reeds, the unsurpassed son of Shiva.
Verse 18 (shiva.rudra.123.18)
पार्वती मङ्गलं चक्रे राजमार्गं मनोहरम् । पद्मरागादिमणिभिः संस्कृतं परितः पुरम्
pārvatī maṅgalaṁ cakre rājamārgaṁ manoharam padmarāgādimaṇibhiḥ saṁskṛtaṁ paritaḥ puram
Parvati made the royal road auspicious and enchanting, and had the whole city adorned all around with rubies and other gems.
Verse 19 (shiva.rudra.123.19)
पतिपुत्रवतीभिश्च साध्वीभिः स्त्रीभिरन्विताः । लक्ष्म्यादित्रिंशद्देवीश्च पुरः कृत्वा समाययौ
patiputravatībhiśca sādhvībhiḥ strībhiranvitāḥ lakṣmyāditriṁśaddevīśca puraḥ kṛtvā samāyayau
Accompanied by virtuous women blessed with husbands and sons, and placing the thirty goddesses headed by Lakshmi before her, she came forth.
Verse 20 (shiva.rudra.123.20)
रम्भाद्यप्सरसो दिव्याः सस्मिता वेषसंयुताः । सङ्गीतनर्तनपरा बभूवुश्च शिवाज्ञया
rambhādyapsaraso divyāḥ sasmitā veṣasaṁyutāḥ saṅgītanartanaparā babhūvuśca śivājñayā
The divine apsaras headed by Rambha, smiling, richly adorned, gave themselves to song and dance, by Shiva's own command.
Verse 21 (shiva.rudra.123.21)
ये तं समीक्षयामासुर्गाङ्गेयं शङ्करोपमम् । ददृशुस्ते महत्तेजो व्याप्तमासीज्जगत्त्रये
ye taṁ samīkṣayāmāsurgāṅgeyaṁ śaṅkaropamam dadṛśuste mahattejo vyāptamāsījjagattraye
Those who beheld Gangeya, equal to Shankara, saw a great splendor that had come to pervade all three worlds.
Verse 22 (shiva.rudra.123.22)
तत्तेजसा वृतं बालं तप्तचामीकरप्रभम् । ववन्दिरे द्रुतं सर्वे कुमारं सूर्यवर्चसम्
tattejasā vṛtaṁ bālaṁ taptacāmīkaraprabham vavandire drutaṁ sarve kumāraṁ sūryavarcasam
All quickly bowed to that child, wrapped in that splendor, gleaming like molten gold, Kumara, radiant as the sun.
Verse 23 (shiva.rudra.123.23)
जहृषुर्विनतस्कन्धा नमश्शब्दरतास्तदा । परिवार्योपतस्थुस्ते वामदक्षिणमागताः
jahṛṣurvinataskandhā namaśśabdaratāstadā parivāryopatasthuste vāmadakṣiṇamāgatāḥ
They rejoiced, their shoulders bowed, absorbed in cries of homage; coming from left and right, they stood surrounding him.
Verse 24 (shiva.rudra.123.24)
अहं विष्णुश्च शक्रश्च तथा देवादयोऽखिलाः । दण्डवत्पतिता भूमौ परिवार्य कुमारकम्
ahaṁ viṣṇuśca śakraśca tathā devādayo'khilāḥ daṇḍavatpatitā bhūmau parivārya kumārakam
I, and Vishnu, and Shakra, and all the other gods, fell prostrate upon the ground, surrounding the child.
Verse 25 (shiva.rudra.123.25)
एतस्मिन्नन्तरे शम्भुर्गिरिजा च मुदान्विता । महोत्सवं समागम्य ददर्श तनयं मुदा
etasminnantare śambhurgirijā ca mudānvitā mahotsavaṁ samāgamya dadarśa tanayaṁ mudā
Meanwhile Shambhu, and Girija filled with joy, arriving at the great festival, joyfully beheld their son.
Verse 26 (shiva.rudra.123.26)
पुत्रं निरीक्ष्य च तदा जगदेकबन्धुः प्रीत्यान्वितः परमया परया भवान्या । स्नेहान्वितो भुजगभोगयुतो हि साक्षात् सर्वेश्वरः परिवृतः प्रमथैः परेशः
putraṁ nirīkṣya ca tadā jagadekabandhuḥ prītyānvitaḥ paramayā parayā bhavānyā snehānvito bhujagabhogayuto hi sākṣāt sarveśvaraḥ parivṛtaḥ pramathaiḥ pareśaḥ
Then, gazing upon his son, that sole kinsman of the universe — filled with the deepest love, together with the supreme Bhavani, tender with affection, his form draped with coiling serpents — the Lord of all, the Supreme Being himself, stood there surrounded by his Pramatha hosts.
Verse 27 (shiva.rudra.123.27)
अथ शक्तिधरः स्कन्दो दृष्ट्वा तौ पार्वतीशिवौ । अवरुह्य रथात्तूर्णं शिरसा प्रणनाम ह
atha śaktidharaḥ skando dṛṣṭvā tau pārvatīśivau avaruhya rathāttūrṇaṁ śirasā praṇanāma ha
Then Skanda, bearer of the Shakti, seeing Parvati and Shiva, quickly descended from the chariot and bowed his head to them.
Verse 28 (shiva.rudra.123.28)
उपगुह्य शिवः प्रीत्या कुमारं मूर्ध्नि शङ्करः । जघ्रौ प्रेम्णा परेशानः प्रसन्नः स्नेहकर्तृकः
upaguhya śivaḥ prītyā kumāraṁ mūrdhni śaṅkaraḥ jaghrau premṇā pareśānaḥ prasannaḥ snehakartṛkaḥ
Shiva, embracing Kumara lovingly, Shankara, the Supreme Lord, greatly pleased and full of affection, kissed his head with love.
Verse 29 (shiva.rudra.123.29)
उपगुह्य गुहं तत्र पार्वती जातसम्भ्रमा । प्रस्नुतं पाययामास स्तनं स्नेहपरिप्लुता
upaguhya guhaṁ tatra pārvatī jātasambhramā prasnutaṁ pāyayāmāsa stanaṁ snehapariplutā
Parvati, overcome with eager emotion, embraced Guha there, and, overwhelmed with love, gave him her flowing breast to drink.
Verse 30 (shiva.rudra.123.30)
तदा नीराजितो देवैःसकलत्रैर्मुदान्वितैः । जयशब्देन महता व्याप्तमासीन्नभस्तलम्
tadā nīrājito devaiḥsakalatrairmudānvitaiḥ jayaśabdena mahatā vyāptamāsīnnabhastalam
Then he was greeted with the waving of lamps by the gods, together with their joyful wives; the sky filled with a mighty cry of "Victory!"
Verse 31 (shiva.rudra.123.31)
ऋषयो ब्रह्मघोषेण गीतेनैव च गायकाः । वाद्यैश्च बहवस्तत्रोपतस्थुश्च कुमारकम्
ṛṣayo brahmaghoṣeṇa gītenaiva ca gāyakāḥ vādyaiśca bahavastatropatasthuśca kumārakam
The sages, with the resounding chant of Vedic mantras, the singers with song, and many others with instruments, gathered there before the child.
Verse 32 (shiva.rudra.123.32)
स्वमङ्कमारोप्य तदा महेशः कुमारकं तं प्रभया समुज्ज्वलम् । बभौ भवानीपतिरेव साक्षा- च्छ्रियाऽन्वितः पुत्रवतां वरिष्ठः
svamaṅkamāropya tadā maheśaḥ kumārakaṁ taṁ prabhayā samujjvalam babhau bhavānīpatireva sākṣā- cchriyā'nvitaḥ putravatāṁ variṣṭhaḥ
Then Mahesha, taking that child, ablaze with radiance, upon his own lap, shone forth — the very consort of Bhavani, endowed with glory, the foremost of all fathers.
Verse 33 (shiva.rudra.123.33)
कुमारः स्वगणैः सार्द्धमाजगाम शिवालयम् । शिवाज्ञया महोत्साहैस्सह देवैर्महासुखी
kumāraḥ svagaṇaiḥ sārddhamājagāma śivālayam śivājñayā mahotsāhaissaha devairmahāsukhī
Kumara, together with his own ganas, came to Shiva's abode, by Shiva's own command, greatly joyful, with the gods full of enthusiasm.
Verse 34 (shiva.rudra.123.34)
दम्पती तौ तदा तत्रैकपद्येन विरेजतुः । विवन्द्यमानावृषिभिरावृतौ सुरसत्तमैः
dampatī tau tadā tatraikapadyena virejatuḥ vivandyamānāvṛṣibhirāvṛtau surasattamaiḥ
Then that divine couple shone forth there together as one, reverently honored by the sages, surrounded by the foremost of the gods.
Verse 35 (shiva.rudra.123.35)
कुमारः क्रीडयामास शिवोत्सङ्गे मुदान्वितः । वासुकिं शिवकण्ठस्थं पाणिभ्यां समपीडयत्
kumāraḥ krīḍayāmāsa śivotsaṅge mudānvitaḥ vāsukiṁ śivakaṇṭhasthaṁ pāṇibhyāṁ samapīḍayat
Kumara, filled with joy, played in Shiva's lap, and with both his hands squeezed Vasuki, the serpent resting about Shiva's neck.
Verse 36 (shiva.rudra.123.36)
प्रहस्य भगवान् शम्भुः शशंस गिरिजां तदा । निरीक्ष्य कृपया दृष्ट्या कृपालुर्लीलयाकृतिम्
prahasya bhagavān śambhuḥ śaśaṁsa girijāṁ tadā nirīkṣya kṛpayā dṛṣṭyā kṛpālurlīlayākṛtim
The Blessed Shambhu, laughing, gazing with a merciful eye at that playful act, then pointed it out to Girija.
Verse 37 (shiva.rudra.123.37)
मदस्मितेन च तदा भगवान्महेशः प्राप्तो मुदं च परमां गिरिजासमेतः । प्रेम्णा स गद्गदगिरो जगदेकबन्धु- र्नोवाच किञ्चन विभुर्भुवनैकभर्त्ता
madasmitena ca tadā bhagavānmaheśaḥ prāpto mudaṁ ca paramāṁ girijāsametaḥ premṇā sa gadgadagiro jagadekabandhu- rnovāca kiñcana vibhurbhuvanaikabharttā
Then, with a joyful smile, the Blessed Mahesha, together with Girija, attained supreme delight; and he, the sole kinsman of the universe, choked with love, the all-pervading sole lord of the worlds, could say nothing at all.
Verse 38 (shiva.rudra.123.38)
अथ शम्भुर्जगन्नाथो हृष्टो लौकिकवृत्तवान् । रत्नसिंहासने रम्ये वासयामास कार्त्तिकम्
atha śambhurjagannātho hṛṣṭo laukikavṛttavān ratnasiṁhāsane ramye vāsayāmāsa kārttikam
Then Shambhu, lord of the universe, delighted, observing worldly custom, seated Kartika upon a beautiful jeweled throne.
Verse 39 (shiva.rudra.123.39)
वेदमन्त्राभिपूतैश्च सर्वतीर्थोदपूर्णकैः । सद्रत्नकुम्भशतकैः स्नापयामास तं मुदा
vedamantrābhipūtaiśca sarvatīrthodapūrṇakaiḥ sadratnakumbhaśatakaiḥ snāpayāmāsa taṁ mudā
With hundreds of fine jeweled pitchers, purified by Vedic mantras and filled with waters from every sacred place, they joyfully bathed him.
Verse 40 (shiva.rudra.123.40)
सद्रत्नसाररचितकिरीटमुकुटाङ्गदम् । वैजयन्तीं स्वमालां च तस्मै चक्रं ददौ हरिः
sadratnasāraracitakirīṭamukuṭāṅgadam vaijayantīṁ svamālāṁ ca tasmai cakraṁ dadau hariḥ
Hari gave him a crown, diadem, and armlets fashioned of the finest jewels, his own Vaijayanti garland, and the discus.
Verse 41 (shiva.rudra.123.41)
शूलं पिनाकं परशुं शक्तिं पाशुपतं शरम् । संहारास्त्रं च परमां विद्यां तस्मै ददौ शिवः
śūlaṁ pinākaṁ paraśuṁ śaktiṁ pāśupataṁ śaram saṁhārāstraṁ ca paramāṁ vidyāṁ tasmai dadau śivaḥ
Shiva gave him the trident, the Pinaka bow, the axe, the Shakti-spear, the Pashupata arrow, the weapon of destruction, and supreme knowledge.
Verse 42 (shiva.rudra.123.42)
अदामहं यज्ञसूत्रं वेदांश्च वेदमातरम् । कमण्डलुं च ब्रह्मास्त्रं विद्यां चैवाऽरिमर्दिनीम्
adāmahaṁ yajñasūtraṁ vedāṁśca vedamātaram kamaṇḍaluṁ ca brahmāstraṁ vidyāṁ caivā'rimardinīm
I gave him the sacred thread, the Vedas and the mother of the Vedas, the water-pot, the Brahma-weapon, and the knowledge that crushes foes.
Verse 43 (shiva.rudra.123.43)
गजेन्द्रं चैव वज्रं च ददौ तस्मै सुरेश्वरः । श्वेतच्छत्रं रत्नमालां ददौ पाशं जलेश्वरः
gajendraṁ caiva vajraṁ ca dadau tasmai sureśvaraḥ śvetacchatraṁ ratnamālāṁ dadau pāśaṁ jaleśvaraḥ
The lord of the gods gave him the great elephant and the thunderbolt; the lord of waters gave a white umbrella, a jeweled garland, and the noose.
Verse 44 (shiva.rudra.123.44)
मनोयायिरथं सूर्यः सन्नाहं च महाचयम् । यमदण्डं यमश्चैव सुधाकुम्भं सुधानिधिः
manoyāyirathaṁ sūryaḥ sannāhaṁ ca mahācayam yamadaṇḍaṁ yamaścaiva sudhākumbhaṁ sudhānidhiḥ
Surya gave a mind-swift chariot and a great store of armor; Yama gave the rod of Yama, and the ocean of nectar gave a pot of nectar.
Verse 45 (shiva.rudra.123.45)
हुताशनो ददौ प्रीत्या महाशक्तिं स्वसूनवे । ददौ स्वशस्त्रं निरृतिर्वायव्यास्त्रं समीरणः
hutāśano dadau prītyā mahāśaktiṁ svasūnave dadau svaśastraṁ nirṛtirvāyavyāstraṁ samīraṇaḥ
Hutashana lovingly gave his own son the great Shakti; Nirriti gave his own weapon, and the wind gave the Vayavya missile.
Verse 46 (shiva.rudra.123.46)
गदां ददौ कुबेरश्च शूलमीशो ददौ मुदा । नानाशस्त्राण्युपायांश्च सर्वे देवा ददुर्मुदा
gadāṁ dadau kuberaśca śūlamīśo dadau mudā nānāśastrāṇyupāyāṁśca sarve devā dadurmudā
Kubera gave the mace, Isha joyfully gave the trident; and all the gods joyfully gave manifold weapons and means.
Verse 47 (shiva.rudra.123.47)
कामास्त्रं कामदेवोऽथ ददौ तस्मै मुदान्वितः । गदां ददौ स्वविद्याश्च तस्मै च परया मुदा
kāmāstraṁ kāmadevo'tha dadau tasmai mudānvitaḥ gadāṁ dadau svavidyāśca tasmai ca parayā mudā
Kamadeva, filled with joy, gave him the weapon of love; and another, with the greatest delight, gave a mace and their own knowledge.
Verse 48 (shiva.rudra.123.48)
क्षीरोदोऽमूल्यरत्नानि विशिष्टं रत्ननूपुरम् । हिमालयो हि दिव्यानि भूषणान्यंशुकानि च
kṣīrodo'mūlyaratnāni viśiṣṭaṁ ratnanūpuram himālayo hi divyāni bhūṣaṇānyaṁśukāni ca
The Ocean of Milk gave priceless jewels and an excellent jeweled anklet; the Himalaya gave divine ornaments and fine garments.
Verse 49 (shiva.rudra.123.49)
चित्रबर्हणनामानं स्वपुत्रं गरुडो ददौ । अरुणस्ताम्रचूडाख्यं बलिनं चरणायुधम्
citrabarhaṇanāmānaṁ svaputraṁ garuḍo dadau aruṇastāmracūḍākhyaṁ balinaṁ caraṇāyudham
Garuda gave his own son named Chitrabarhana; Aruna gave the mighty one named Tamrachuda, whose very feet were his weapon.
Verse 50 (shiva.rudra.123.50)
पार्वती सस्मिता हृष्टा परमैश्वर्यमुत्तमम् । ददौ तस्मै महाप्रीत्या चिरञ्जीवित्वमेव च
pārvatī sasmitā hṛṣṭā paramaiśvaryamuttamam dadau tasmai mahāprītyā cirañjīvitvameva ca
Parvati, smiling and delighted, with great love gave him the highest supreme sovereignty, and long life itself.
Verse 51 (shiva.rudra.123.51)
लक्ष्मीश्च सम्पदं दिव्यां महाहारं मनोहरम् । सावित्री सिद्धविद्यां च समस्तां प्रददौ मुदा
lakṣmīśca sampadaṁ divyāṁ mahāhāraṁ manoharam sāvitrī siddhavidyāṁ ca samastāṁ pradadau mudā
Lakshmi joyfully gave divine prosperity and a magnificent, enchanting necklace; Savitri joyfully gave the entire body of perfected knowledge.
Verse 52 (shiva.rudra.123.52)
अन्याश्चापि मुने देव्यो या यास्तत्र समागताः । स्वात्मवत्सु ददुस्तस्मै तथैव शिशुपालिकाः
anyāścāpi mune devyo yā yāstatra samāgatāḥ svātmavatsu dadustasmai tathaiva śiśupālikāḥ
And other goddesses too, O sage, whoever had gathered there, gave to him as if to their own children, and likewise the nurse-goddesses gave their gifts.
Verse 53 (shiva.rudra.123.53)
महामहोत्सवस्तत्र बभूव मुनिसत्तम । सर्वे प्रसन्नतां याता विशेषाच्च शिवाशिवौ
mahāmahotsavastatra babhūva munisattama sarve prasannatāṁ yātā viśeṣācca śivāśivau
O best of sages, a very great festival arose there; all were filled with joy, and especially Shiva and Shiva (Shankara and Parvati).
Verse 54 (shiva.rudra.123.54)
एतस्मिन्नन्तरे काले प्रोवाच प्रहसन् मुदा । मुने ब्रह्मादिकान् देवान् रुद्रो भर्गः प्रतापवान्
etasminnantare kāle provāca prahasan mudā mune brahmādikān devān rudro bhargaḥ pratāpavān
Meanwhile, O sage, Rudra, the mighty Bharga, laughing with joy, spoke to Brahma and the other gods.
Verse 55 (shiva.rudra.123.55)
शिव उवाच हे हरे हे विधे देवाः सर्वे शृणुत मद्वचः । सर्वथाहं प्रसन्नोऽस्मि वरान्वृणुत ऐच्छिकान्
śiva uvāca he hare he vidhe devāḥ sarve śṛṇuta madvacaḥ sarvathāhaṁ prasanno'smi varānvṛṇuta aicchikān
Shiva said: O Hari, O Vidhi, O all you gods, hear my words. I am entirely pleased — ask for whatever boons you desire.
Verse 56 (shiva.rudra.123.56)
ब्रह्मोवाच तच्छ्रुत्वा वचनं शम्भोर्मुने विष्ण्वादयः सुराः । सर्वे प्रोचुः प्रसन्नास्या देवं पशुपतिं प्रभुम्
brahmovāca tacchrutvā vacanaṁ śambhormune viṣṇvādayaḥ surāḥ sarve procuḥ prasannāsyā devaṁ paśupatiṁ prabhum
Brahma said: O sage, hearing Shambhu's words, all the gods headed by Vishnu, greatly pleased, spoke to the Lord Pashupati.
Verse 57 (shiva.rudra.123.57)
कुमारेण हतो ह्येष तारको भविता प्रभो । तदर्थमेव सञ्जातमिदं चरितमुत्तमम्
kumāreṇa hato hyeṣa tārako bhavitā prabho tadarthameva sañjātamidaṁ caritamuttamam
O Lord, this Taraka is destined to be slain by Kumara; indeed, for that very purpose has this excellent story come to pass.
Verse 58 (shiva.rudra.123.58)
तस्मादद्यैव यास्यामस्तारकं हन्तुमुद्यताः । आज्ञां देहि कुमाराय स तं हन्यात् सुखाय नः
tasmādadyaiva yāsyāmastārakaṁ hantumudyatāḥ ājñāṁ dehi kumārāya sa taṁ hanyāt sukhāya naḥ
Therefore, this very day, we shall go forth, prepared to slay Taraka. Give your command to Kumara, that he may kill him, for our happiness.
Verse 59 (shiva.rudra.123.59)
तथेति मत्वा स विभुर्दत्तवांस्तनयं तदा । देवेभ्यस्तारकं हन्तुं कृपया परिभावितः
tatheti matvā sa vibhurdattavāṁstanayaṁ tadā devebhyastārakaṁ hantuṁ kṛpayā paribhāvitaḥ
Saying "so be it," that Lord, moved by compassion, then gave his own son over to the gods, to slay Taraka.
Verse 60 (shiva.rudra.123.60)
शिवाज्ञया सुराः सर्वे ब्रह्मविष्णुमुखास्तदा । पुरस्कृत्य गुहं सद्यो निर्जग्मुर्मिलिता गिरेः
śivājñayā surāḥ sarve brahmaviṣṇumukhāstadā puraskṛtya guhaṁ sadyo nirjagmurmilitā gireḥ
By Shiva's command, all the gods, headed by Brahma and Vishnu, then placing Guha at their head, went forth at once from the mountain, all together.
Verse 61 (shiva.rudra.123.61)
बहिर्निस्सृत्य कैलासात्त्वष्टा शासनतो हरेः । विरेचे नगरं रम्यमद्भुतं निकटे गिरेः
bahirnissṛtya kailāsāttvaṣṭā śāsanato hareḥ virece nagaraṁ ramyamadbhutaṁ nikaṭe gireḥ
Going forth from Kailasa, Tvashta, at Hari's command, fashioned a beautiful and wondrous city near the mountain.
Verse 62 (shiva.rudra.123.62)
तत्र रम्यं गृहं दिव्यमद्भुतं परमोज्ज्वलम् । गुहार्थं निर्ममे त्वष्टा तत्र सिंहासनं वरम्
tatra ramyaṁ gṛhaṁ divyamadbhutaṁ paramojjvalam guhārthaṁ nirmame tvaṣṭā tatra siṁhāsanaṁ varam
There Tvashta fashioned a beautiful, divine, wondrous, and supremely resplendent house for Guha, and an excellent throne besides.
Verse 63 (shiva.rudra.123.63)
तदा हरिः सुधीर्भक्त्या कारयामास मङ्गलम् । कार्त्तिकस्याभिषेकं हि सर्वतीर्थजलैः सुरैः
tadā hariḥ sudhīrbhaktyā kārayāmāsa maṅgalam kārttikasyābhiṣekaṁ hi sarvatīrthajalaiḥ suraiḥ
Then Hari, the wise one, with devotion, caused the auspicious consecration of Kartika to be performed, together with the gods, using waters from all sacred places.
Verse 64 (shiva.rudra.123.64)
सर्वथा समलङ्कृत्य वासयामास सङ्ग्रहम् । कार्त्तिकस्य विधिं प्रीत्या कारयामास चोत्सवम्
sarvathā samalaṅkṛtya vāsayāmāsa saṅgraham kārttikasya vidhiṁ prītyā kārayāmāsa cotsavam
Adorning him fully in every way, he seated him amid the assembly, and lovingly caused the rite and festival for Kartika to be carried out.
Verse 65 (shiva.rudra.123.65)
ब्रह्माण्डाधिपतित्वं हि ददौ तस्मै मुदा हरिः । चकार तिलकं तस्य समानर्च सुरैस्सह
brahmāṇḍādhipatitvaṁ hi dadau tasmai mudā hariḥ cakāra tilakaṁ tasya samānarca suraissaha
Hari joyfully bestowed upon him the lordship of the whole universe, applied the tilaka mark to him, and worshipped him together with the gods.
Verse 66 (shiva.rudra.123.66)
प्रणम्य कार्त्तिकं प्रीत्या सर्वदेवर्षिभिः सह । तुष्टाव विविधैः स्तोत्रैः शिवरूपं सनातनम्
praṇamya kārttikaṁ prītyā sarvadevarṣibhiḥ saha tuṣṭāva vividhaiḥ stotraiḥ śivarūpaṁ sanātanam
Bowing lovingly to Kartika, together with all the gods and sages, he praised him, the eternal form of Shiva, with manifold hymns.
Verse 67 (shiva.rudra.123.67)
वरसिंहासनस्थो हि शुशुभेऽतीव कार्त्तिकः । स्वामिभावं समापन्नो ब्रह्माण्डस्यापि पालकः
varasiṁhāsanastho hi śuśubhe'tīva kārttikaḥ svāmibhāvaṁ samāpanno brahmāṇḍasyāpi pālakaḥ
Kartika, seated upon that excellent throne, shone forth exceedingly, having attained the state of commander, the protector of the whole universe.
