Verse 1 (shiva.rudra.128.1)

brahmovāca nivārya vīrabhadraṁ taṁ kumāraḥ paravīrahā samaicchattārakavadhaṁ smṛtvā śivapadāmbujau

Having restrained Virabhadra, Kumara, slayer of enemy heroes, himself resolved on Taraka's death, calling to mind the lotus feet of Shiva.

Verse 2 (shiva.rudra.128.2)

jagarjātha mahātejāḥ kārtikeyo mahābalaḥ sannaddhaḥ so'bhavatkruddhaḥ sainyena mahatā vṛtaḥ

The greatly radiant, mighty Kartikeya then roared aloud; armed and enraged, he stood surrounded by a vast army.

Verse 3 (shiva.rudra.128.3)

tadā jaya jayetyuktaṁ sarvairdevagaṇaistathā saṁstuto vāgbhiriṣṭābhistadaiva ca surarṣibhiḥ

Then all the hosts of gods cried out, 'Victory, victory!' and he was praised at that very moment by the divine sages with beloved words.

Verse 4 (shiva.rudra.128.4)

tārakasya kumārasya saṅgrāmo'tīva duḥsahaḥ jātastadā mahāghoraḥ sarvabhūta bhayaṅkaraḥ

Then a battle broke out between Taraka and Kumara, utterly unbearable, exceedingly terrible, striking fear into every being.

Verse 5 (shiva.rudra.128.5)

śaktihastau ca tau vīrau yuyudhāte parasparam sarveṣāṁ paśyatāṁ tatra mahāścaryavatāṁ mune

Spear in hand, those two heroes fought each other there, O sage, while all who watched were filled with great wonder.

Verse 6 (shiva.rudra.128.6)

śaktinirbhinnadehau tau mahāsādhanasaṁyutau parasparaṁ vañcayantau siṁhāviva mahābalau

Their bodies pierced through by each other's spears, both armed with great weapons, they evaded one another like two mighty lions.

Verse 7 (shiva.rudra.128.7)

vaitālikaṁ samāśritya tathā khecarakaṁ matam prāpataṁ ca samāśritya śaktyā śaktiṁ vijaghnatuḥ

Resorting to the Vaitalika technique, and likewise the Khechara method, and to the Prapata method as well, they struck spear against spear.

Verse 8 (shiva.rudra.128.8)

ebhirmantrairmahāvīrau cakraturyuddhamadbhutam anyo'nyaṁ sādhakau bhūtvā mahābalaparākramau

With these mantras the two great heroes waged a wondrous battle, each striving to master the other, both of tremendous strength and valor.

Verse 9 (shiva.rudra.128.9)

mahābalaṁ prakurvantau parasparavadhaiṣiṇau jaghnatuḥ śaktidhārābhī raṇe raṇaviśāradau

Displaying their great strength, each seeking the other's death, those two masters of warfare struck each other with streams of spear-blows in that battle.

Verse 10 (shiva.rudra.128.10)

mūrdhni kaṇṭhe tathā corvorjānvoścaiva kaṭītaṭe vakṣasyurasi pṛṣṭhe ca cicchiduśca parasparam

On the head, on the neck, on the thighs, on the knees, on the flanks of the waist, on the chest, on the breast, and on the back, each cut into the other.

Verse 11 (shiva.rudra.128.11)

tadā tau yudhyamānau ca hantukāmau mahābalau valgantau vīraśabdaiśca nānāyuddhaviśāradau

Then those two mighty ones, fighting and each intent on killing the other, leapt about uttering heroic cries, both masters of many forms of combat.

Verse 12 (shiva.rudra.128.12)

abhavanprekṣakāḥ sarve devā gandharvakinnarāḥ ūcuḥ parasparaṁ tatra ko'smin yuddhe vijeṣyate

All the gods, gandharvas, and kinnaras became mere onlookers, and said to one another there, 'Who will be victor in this battle?'

Verse 13 (shiva.rudra.128.13)

tadā nabhogatā vāṇī jagau devāṁśca sāntvayan asuraṁ tārakaṁ cātra kumāro'yaṁ haniṣyati

Then a voice from the sky spoke, consoling the gods: 'This Kumara shall slay the demon Taraka here.'

Verse 14 (shiva.rudra.128.14)

mā śocyatāṁ suraiḥ sarvai sukhena sthīyatāmiti yuṣmadarthaṁ śaṅkaro hi putrarūpeṇa saṁsthitaḥ

'Let none of you gods grieve; remain at ease. For your sake alone has Shankara taken his stand in the form of a son.'

Verse 15 (shiva.rudra.128.15)

śrutvā tadā tāṁ gagane samīritāṁ vācaṁ śubhāṁ sa pramathaiḥ samāvṛtaḥ nihantukāmaḥ sukhitaḥ kumārako daityādhipaṁ tārakamāśvabhūttadā

Hearing that auspicious voice spoken in the sky, Kumara, surrounded by his hosts of pramathas and made joyful, resolved at once to slay the demon-lord Taraka.

Verse 16 (shiva.rudra.128.16)

śaktyā tayā mahābāhurājaghāna stanāntare kumāraḥ sma ruṣāviṣṭastārakāsuramojasā

With that spear, the mighty-armed Kumara, seized with fury, struck Tarakasura full in the chest with all his force.

Verse 17 (shiva.rudra.128.17)

taṁ prahāramanādṛtya tārako daityapuṅgavaḥ kumāraṁ cāpi saṅkruddhaḥ svaśaktyā sañjaghāna saḥ

Taraka, foremost of demons, paying no heed to that blow, in turn struck Kumara too, in fury, with his own spear.

Verse 18 (shiva.rudra.128.18)

tena śaktiprahāreṇa śāṅkarirmūrcchito'bhavat muhūrtāccetanāṁ prāpa stūyamāno maharṣibhiḥ

By that blow of the spear, Shankara's son fell senseless; but within a moment he regained consciousness, praised by the great sages.

Verse 19 (shiva.rudra.128.19)

yathā siṁho madonmatto hantukāmastathāsuram kumārastārakaṁ śaktyā sa jaghāna pratāpavān

Like a lion maddened with fury, intent on killing, that mighty Kumara struck Taraka with his spear.

Verse 20 (shiva.rudra.128.20)

evaṁ parasparaṁ tau hi kumāraścāpi tārakaḥ yuyudhāte'tisaṁrabdhau śaktiyuddhaviśāradau

Thus Kumara and Taraka, both greatly enraged, both masters of the spear-fight, fought against each other.

Verse 21 (shiva.rudra.128.21)

abhyāsaparamāvāstāmanyonyaṁ vijigīṣayā padātinau yudhyamānau citrarūpau tarasvinau

Utterly devoted to their skill, each eager to conquer the other, those two swift warriors fought on foot, taking on wondrous forms.

Verse 22 (shiva.rudra.128.22)

vividhairghātapuñjaistāvanyonyaṁ vinijaghnatuḥ nānāmārgānprakurvantau garjantau suparākramau

With many kinds of showering blows they struck each other, employing various techniques, roaring, both of tremendous valor.

Verse 23 (shiva.rudra.128.23)

avalokaparāḥ sarve devagandharvakinnarāḥ vismayaṁ paramaṁ jagmurnocuḥ kiñcana tatra te

All the gods, gandharvas, and kinnaras, absorbed in watching, were filled with the greatest wonder and spoke not a word.

Verse 24 (shiva.rudra.128.24)

na vavau pavamānaśca niṣprabho'bhūddivākaraḥ cacāla vasudhā sarvā saśailavanakānanā

The wind ceased to blow, the sun grew dim, and the whole earth, with its mountains, forests, and thickets, shook.

Verse 25 (shiva.rudra.128.25)

etasminnantare tatra himālayamukhā dharāḥ snehārditāstadā jagmuḥ kumāraṁ ca parīpsavaḥ

Meanwhile the mountains, with Himalaya at their head, moved there, their hearts melted with affection, seeking to protect Kumara.

Verse 26 (shiva.rudra.128.26)

tataḥ sa dṛṣṭvā tānsarvānbhayabhītāṁśca śāṅkariḥ parvatāngirijāputro babhāṣe paribodhayan

Then Shankara's son, Girija's own child, seeing all those mountains struck with fear, spoke to comfort them.

Verse 27 (shiva.rudra.128.27)

kumāra uvāca mā khidyatāṁ mahābhāgā mā cintāṁ kurvatāṁ nagāḥ ghātayāmyadya pāpiṣṭhaṁ sarveṣāṁ vaḥ prapaśyatām

Kumara said: 'Grieve not, O most fortunate ones; let the mountains have no fear. Today, before the eyes of you all, I shall strike down this most sinful one.'

Verse 28 (shiva.rudra.128.28)

evaṁ samāśvāsya tadā parvatān nirjarān gaṇān praṇamya girijāṁ śambhumādade śaktimutprabhām

Having thus comforted the mountains, the gods, and the hosts, and having bowed to Girija and Shambhu, he took up his radiant spear.

Verse 29 (shiva.rudra.128.29)

taṁ tārakaṁ hantumanāḥ karaśaktirmahāprabhuḥ virarāja mahāvīraḥ kumāraḥ śambhubālakaḥ

That great lord, spear in hand, resolved to slay Taraka, and the great hero Kumara, Shambhu's own child, shone forth in splendor.

Verse 30 (shiva.rudra.128.30)

śaktyā tayā jaghānātha kumārastārakāsuram tejasāḍhyaḥ śaṅkarasya lokakleśakaraṁ ca tam

Then Kumara, filled with the splendor of Shankara, struck with that spear Tarakasura, who had brought such affliction to the worlds.

Verse 31 (shiva.rudra.128.31)

papāta sadyaḥ sahasā viśīrṇāṅgo'suraḥ kṣitau tārakākhyo mahāvīraḥsarvāsuragaṇādhipaḥ

At once, suddenly, the demon fell to the earth, his body shattered -- that great hero named Taraka, lord of all the demon hosts.

Verse 32 (shiva.rudra.128.32)

kumāreṇa hataḥ so'tivīraḥ sa khalu tārakaḥ layaṁ yayau ca tatraiva sarveṣāṁ paśyatāṁ mune

Slain by Kumara, that mighty hero Taraka met his dissolution there, before the eyes of all, O sage.

Verse 33 (shiva.rudra.128.33)

Seeing that most powerful Taraka fallen thus, that hero did not strike him again, seeing that he had already gone lifeless in the battle.

Verse 34 (shiva.rudra.128.34)

hate tasminmahādaitye tārakākhye mahābale kṣayaṁ praṇītā bahavo'surā devagaṇaistadā

When that great demon named Taraka, of tremendous strength, had been slain, many of the demons were then destroyed by the hosts of gods.

Verse 35 (shiva.rudra.128.35)

kecidbhītāḥ prāñjalayo babhūvustatra cāhave chinnabhinnāṅgakāḥ kecinmṛtā daityāḥsahasraśaḥ

Some, terrified, stood there in the battle with joined hands; others, their limbs cut to pieces, lay dead -- demons by the thousands.

Verse 36 (shiva.rudra.128.36)

kecijjātāḥ kumārasya śaraṇaṁ śaraṇārthinaḥ vadantaḥ pāhi pāhīti daityāḥ sāñjalayastadā

Some demons, seeking refuge, came to Kumara for shelter, crying out with joined hands, 'Save us, save us!'

Verse 37 (shiva.rudra.128.37)

kiyantaśca hatāstatra kiyantaśca palāyitāḥ palāyamānā vyathitāstāḍitā nirjjarairgaṇaiḥ

Some were slain there, some fled; and those who fled, struck by the hosts of the immortals, went off in distress.

Verse 38 (shiva.rudra.128.38)

sahasraśaḥ praviṣṭāste pātāle ca jijīṣavaḥ palāyamānāste sarve bhagnāśā dainyamāgatāḥ

By the thousands, desiring to live, they entered the netherworld; all of them, fleeing, their hopes broken, fell into wretchedness.

Verse 39 (shiva.rudra.128.39)

evaṁ sarvaṁ daityasainyaṁ bhraṣṭaṁ jātaṁ munīśvara na kecittatra santasthurgaṇadevabhayāttadā

Thus, O lord of sages, the whole army of the demons was utterly routed; none remained standing there, from fear of the gods and their hosts.

Verse 40 (shiva.rudra.128.40)

āsīnniṣkaṇṭakaṁ sarvaṁ hate tasmindurātmani te devāḥ sukhamāpannāḥ sarve śakrādayastadā

With that evil-souled one slain, all became free of trouble everywhere; and all the gods, headed by Indra, then obtained happiness.

Verse 41 (shiva.rudra.128.41)

evaṁ vijayamāpannaṁ kumāraṁ nikhilāḥ surāḥ babhūvuryugapad hṛṣṭāstrilokāśca mahāsukhā

Thus, at Kumara's victory, all the gods together were filled with joy, and the three worlds knew great happiness.

Verse 42 (shiva.rudra.128.42)

tadā śivo'pi taṁ jñātvā vijayaṁ kārtikasya ca tatrājagāma sa mudā sagaṇaḥ priyayā saha

Then Shiva too, learning of Kartika's victory, came there with joy, together with his hosts and with his beloved.

Verse 43 (shiva.rudra.128.43)

svātmajaṁ svāṅkamāropya kumāraṁ sūryavarcasam lālayāmāsa suprītyā śivā ca snehasaṅkulā

Taking up his own son upon his lap, that Kumara radiant as the sun, and Shiva [Parvati], her heart full of tenderness, fondled him with the deepest love.

Verse 44 (shiva.rudra.128.44)

himālayastadāgatya svaputraiḥ parivāritaḥ sabandhuḥsānugaḥ śambhuṁ tuṣṭāva ca śivāṁ guham

Then Himalaya too came, surrounded by his own sons, with his kinsmen and attendants, and praised Shambhu, Shiva [Parvati], and Guha.

Verse 45 (shiva.rudra.128.45)

tato devagaṇāḥ sarve munayaḥ siddhacāraṇāḥ tuṣṭuvuḥ śāṅkariṁ śambhuṁ girijāṁ tuṣitāṁ bhṛśam

Then all the hosts of gods, the sages, the siddhas, and the charanas, praised Shankara's son, Shambhu, and Girija, who was overjoyed.

Verse 46 (shiva.rudra.128.46)

puṣpavṛṣṭiṁ sumahatīṁ cakruścopasurāstadā jagurgandharvapatayo nanṛtuścāpsarogaṇāḥ

The lesser gods showered down a great rain of flowers; the lords of the gandharvas sang, and the hosts of apsaras danced.

Verse 47 (shiva.rudra.128.47)

vāditrāṇi tathā nedustadānīṁ ca viśeṣataḥ jayaśabdo namaḥ śabdo babhūvoccairmuhurmuhuḥ

Musical instruments resounded loudly, and again and again the cries of 'Victory!' and 'Salutations!' rang out on high.

Verse 48 (shiva.rudra.128.48)

tato mayācyutaścāpi santuṣṭo'bhūdviśeṣataḥ śivaṁ śivāṁ kumāraṁ ca santuṣṭāva samādarāt

Then I too, and Achyuta [Vishnu], became especially joyful, and with great reverence praised Shiva, Shiva [Parvati], and Kumara.

Verse 49 (shiva.rudra.128.49)

kumāramagrataḥ kṛtvā harikendramukhāḥ surāḥ cakrurnīrājanaṁ prītyā munayaścāpare tathā

Placing Kumara before them, the gods headed by Hari and Indra, and other sages too, performed the waving of lamps [arati] with great love.

Verse 50 (shiva.rudra.128.50)

gītavāditraghoṣeṇa brahmaghoṣeṇa bhūyasā tadotsavo mahānāsītkīrtanaṁ ca viśeṣataḥ

With the resounding of song and music, and with the loud chanting of Vedic sound, there was then a great festival, and abundant kirtan.

Verse 51 (shiva.rudra.128.51)
