The Praise of Shiva

Verse 1 (shiva.rudra.144.1)

व्यास उवाच । तस्मिन् दैत्याधिपे पौरे सभ्रातरि विमोहिते । सनत्कुमार किं चासीत्तदाचक्ष्वाखिलं विभो

vyāsa uvāca tasmin daityādhipe paure sabhrātari vimohite sanatkumāra kiṁ cāsīttadācakṣvākhilaṁ vibho

Vyasa said: "O mighty one, when that lord of daityas, together with his citizens and brothers, had been thus deluded, what happened then, O Sanatkumara? Tell me all."

Verse 2 (shiva.rudra.144.2)

सनत्कुमार उवाच । त्रिपुरे च तथाभूते दैत्ये त्यक्तशिवार्चने । स्त्रीधर्मे निखिले नष्टे दुराचारे व्यवस्थिते

sanatkumāra uvāca tripure ca tathābhūte daitye tyaktaśivārcane strīdharme nikhile naṣṭe durācāre vyavasthite

Sanatkumara said: When Tripura had thus become such — the daityas having abandoned the worship of Shiva, the entire dharma of women destroyed, and misconduct established —

Verse 3 (shiva.rudra.144.3)

कृतार्थ इव लक्ष्मीशो देवैः सार्द्धमुमापतिम् । निवेदितुं तच्चरित्रं कैलासमगमद्धरिः

kṛtārtha iva lakṣmīśo devaiḥ sārddhamumāpatim nivedituṁ taccaritraṁ kailāsamagamaddhariḥ

— then Hari, the lord of Lakshmi, as though his purpose fulfilled, went with the gods to Kailasa, to report that whole account to the husband of Uma.

Verse 4 (shiva.rudra.144.4)

तस्योपकण्ठं स्थित्वाऽसौ देवैःसह रमापतिः । ततो भूरि स च ब्रह्मा परमेण समाधिना

tasyopakaṇṭhaṁ sthitvā'sau devaiḥsaha ramāpatiḥ tato bhūri sa ca brahmā parameṇa samādhinā

Standing near him, that lord of Rama, together with the gods, and Brahma too, in deep and profound meditation —

Verse 5 (shiva.rudra.144.5)

मनसा प्राप्य सर्वज्ञं ब्रह्मणा स हरिस्तदा । तुष्टाव वाग्भिरिष्टाभिः शङ्करं पुरुषोत्तमः

manasā prāpya sarvajñaṁ brahmaṇā sa haristadā tuṣṭāva vāgbhiriṣṭābhiḥ śaṅkaraṁ puruṣottamaḥ

— having reached the all-knowing one in his mind, Purushottama Hari, together with Brahma, then praised Shankara with cherished words.

Verse 6 (shiva.rudra.144.6)

विष्णुरुवाच । महेश्वराय देवाय नमस्ते परमात्मने । नारायणाय रुद्राय ब्रह्मणे ब्रह्मरूपिणे

viṣṇuruvāca maheśvarāya devāya namaste paramātmane nārāyaṇāya rudrāya brahmaṇe brahmarūpiṇe

Vishnu said: "Salutation to you, god Maheshvara, the Supreme Self; to Narayana, to Rudra, to Brahma, whose very form is Brahman."

Verse 7 (shiva.rudra.144.7)

एवं कृत्वा महादेवं दण्डवत्प्रणिपत्य ह । जजाप रुद्रमन्त्रं च दक्षिणामूर्तिसम्भवम्

evaṁ kṛtvā mahādevaṁ daṇḍavatpraṇipatya ha jajāpa rudramantraṁ ca dakṣiṇāmūrtisambhavam

Having thus praised him, prostrating full length before Mahadeva, he recited the Rudra-mantra that had arisen from Dakshinamurti.

Verse 8 (shiva.rudra.144.8)

जले स्थित्वा सार्द्धकोटिप्रमितं तन्मनाः प्रभुः । संस्मरन् मनसा शम्भुं स्वप्रभुं परमेश्वरम्

jale sthitvā sārddhakoṭipramitaṁ tanmanāḥ prabhuḥ saṁsmaran manasā śambhuṁ svaprabhuṁ parameśvaram

Standing in water, the Lord, his mind fixed, recited it one-and-a-quarter crore times, remembering in his mind Shambhu, his own supreme lord.

Verse 9 (shiva.rudra.144.9)

तावद्देवास्तदा सर्वे तन्मनस्का महेश्वरम्

tāvaddevāstadā sarve tanmanaskā maheśvaram

Meanwhile all the gods too, their minds fixed likewise on Maheshvara, spoke as follows —

Verse 10 (shiva.rudra.144.10)

देवा ऊचुः । नमःसर्वात्मने तुभ्यं शङ्करायार्तिहारिणे । रुद्राय नीलकण्ठाय चिद्रूपाय प्रचेतसे

devā ūcuḥ namaḥsarvātmane tubhyaṁ śaṅkarāyārtihāriṇe rudrāya nīlakaṇṭhāya cidrūpāya pracetase

The gods said: "Salutation to you, the Self of all, Shankara, remover of affliction; to Rudra, the blue-throated, of the form of pure consciousness, the all-wise."

Verse 11 (shiva.rudra.144.11)

गतिर्नः सर्वदा त्वं हि सर्वापद्विनिवारकः । त्वमेव सर्वदात्माभिर्वन्द्यो देवारिसूदन

gatirnaḥ sarvadā tvaṁ hi sarvāpadvinivārakaḥ tvameva sarvadātmābhirvandyo devārisūdana

"You alone are ever our refuge, the remover of every calamity; you alone are to be venerated at all times by all souls, O slayer of the enemies of the gods."

Verse 12 (shiva.rudra.144.12)

त्वमादिस्त्वमनादिश्च स्वानन्दश्चाक्षयः प्रभुः । प्रकृतेः पुरुषस्यापि साक्षात्स्रष्टा जगत्प्रभुः

tvamādistvamanādiśca svānandaścākṣayaḥ prabhuḥ prakṛteḥ puruṣasyāpi sākṣātsraṣṭā jagatprabhuḥ

"You are the beginning, and you are without beginning; self-blissful, imperishable Lord; the direct creator even of Prakriti and Purusha, the lord of the universe."

Verse 13 (shiva.rudra.144.13)

त्वमेव जगतां कर्ता भर्ता हर्ता त्वमेव हि । ब्रह्मा विष्णुर्हरो भूत्वा रजःसत्त्वतमोगुणैः

tvameva jagatāṁ kartā bhartā hartā tvameva hi brahmā viṣṇurharo bhūtvā rajaḥsattvatamoguṇaiḥ

"You alone are the creator of the worlds, and you alone their sustainer and destroyer, becoming Brahma, Vishnu and Hara through the gunas of rajas, sattva and tamas."

Verse 14 (shiva.rudra.144.14)

तारकोऽसि जगत्यस्मिन् सर्वेषामधिपोऽव्ययः । वरदो वाङ्मयो वाच्यो वाच्यवाचकवर्जितः

tārako'si jagatyasmin sarveṣāmadhipo'vyayaḥ varado vāṅmayo vācyo vācyavācakavarjitaḥ

"You are the deliverer in this world, the imperishable ruler of all; the bestower of boons, of the very nature of speech, expressible, yet beyond both the expressible and the expresser."

Verse 15 (shiva.rudra.144.15)

याच्यो मुक्त्यर्थमीशानो योगिभिर्योगवित्तमैः । हृत्पुण्डरीकविवरे योगिनां त्वं हि संस्थितः

yācyo muktyarthamīśāno yogibhiryogavittamaiḥ hṛtpuṇḍarīkavivare yogināṁ tvaṁ hi saṁsthitaḥ

"O Ishana, you are entreated for the sake of liberation by yogis, the best knowers of yoga; you abide within the cavity of the heart-lotus of the yogis."

Verse 16 (shiva.rudra.144.16)

वदन्ति वेदास्त्वां सन्तः परब्रह्मस्वरूपिणम् । भवन्तं तत्त्वमित्यद्य तेजोराशिं परात्परम्

vadanti vedāstvāṁ santaḥ parabrahmasvarūpiṇam bhavantaṁ tattvamityadya tejorāśiṁ parātparam

"The Vedas, and the sages, declare you to be the very form of the Supreme Brahman, that Tat-tvam, the mass of radiance, the highest of the high."

Verse 17 (shiva.rudra.144.17)

परमात्मानमित्याहुरस्मिन् जगति यद्विभो । त्वमेव शर्व सर्वात्मन् त्रिलोकाधिपते भव

paramātmānamityāhurasmin jagati yadvibho tvameva śarva sarvātman trilokādhipate bhava

"They call you the Supreme Self in this world, O mighty one; you alone, O Sharva, Self of all, are the lord of the three worlds."

Verse 18 (shiva.rudra.144.18)

दृष्टं श्रुतं स्तुतं सर्वं ज्ञायमानं जगद्गुरो । अणोरल्पतरं प्राहुर्महतोऽपि महत्तरम्

dṛṣṭaṁ śrutaṁ stutaṁ sarvaṁ jñāyamānaṁ jagadguro aṇoralpataraṁ prāhurmahato'pi mahattaram

"O teacher of the world, whatever is seen, heard, praised, or known — all of it is you; they call you smaller than the smallest, and greater even than the greatest."

Verse 19 (shiva.rudra.144.19)

सर्वतः पाणिपादं तत् सर्वतोऽक्षिशिरोमुखम् । सर्वतः श्रवणघ्राणं त्वां नमामि च सर्वतः

sarvataḥ pāṇipādaṁ tat sarvato'kṣiśiromukham sarvataḥ śravaṇaghrāṇaṁ tvāṁ namāmi ca sarvataḥ

"You have hands and feet on every side, eyes, heads and faces on every side, ears and nose on every side — I bow to you from every side."

Verse 20 (shiva.rudra.144.20)

सर्वज्ञं सर्वतो व्यापिन् सर्वेश्वरमनावृतम् । विश्वरूपं विरूपाक्षं त्वां नमामि च सर्वतः

sarvajñaṁ sarvato vyāpin sarveśvaramanāvṛtam viśvarūpaṁ virūpākṣaṁ tvāṁ namāmi ca sarvataḥ

"All-knowing, all-pervading, lord of all, unveiled, of universal form, the strange-eyed one — I bow to you from every side."

Verse 21 (shiva.rudra.144.21)

सर्वेश्वरं भवाध्यक्षं सत्यं शिवमनुत्तमम् । कोटि भास्करसङ्काशं त्वां नमामि च सर्वतः

sarveśvaraṁ bhavādhyakṣaṁ satyaṁ śivamanuttamam koṭi bhāskarasaṅkāśaṁ tvāṁ namāmi ca sarvataḥ

"Lord of all, overseer of existence, the true, the auspicious, the unsurpassed, radiant as a crore of suns — I bow to you from every side."

Verse 22 (shiva.rudra.144.22)

विश्वदेवमनाद्यन्तं षट्त्रिंशत्कमनीश्वरम् । प्रवर्तकं च सर्वेषां त्वां नमामि च सर्वतः

viśvadevamanādyantaṁ ṣaṭtriṁśatkamanīśvaram pravartakaṁ ca sarveṣāṁ tvāṁ namāmi ca sarvataḥ

"The universal god, without beginning or end, embodying the thirty-six tattvas, having no ruler over yourself, the setter-in-motion of all — I bow to you from every side."

Verse 23 (shiva.rudra.144.23)

प्रवर्तकं च प्रकृतेः सर्वस्य प्रपितामहम् । सर्वविग्रहमीशं हि त्वां नमामि च सर्वतः

pravartakaṁ ca prakṛteḥ sarvasya prapitāmaham sarvavigrahamīśaṁ hi tvāṁ namāmi ca sarvataḥ

"The mover of Prakriti, the great-grandsire of all, the very form of all, the Lord — I bow to you from every side."

Verse 24 (shiva.rudra.144.24)

एवं वदन्ति वरदं सर्वावासं स्वयम्भुवम् । श्रुतयः श्रुतिसारज्ञं श्रुतिसारविदश्च ये

evaṁ vadanti varadaṁ sarvāvāsaṁ svayambhuvam śrutayaḥ śrutisārajñaṁ śrutisāravidaśca ye

Thus the scriptures speak of you, the boon-giver, the abode of all, the self-existent; and so too do those who know the essence of the scriptures.

Verse 25 (shiva.rudra.144.25)

अदृश्यमस्माभिरनेकभूतं त्वया कृतं यद्भवताथ लोके । त्वामेव देवासुरभूसुराश्च अन्ये च वै स्थावरजङ्गमाश्च

adṛśyamasmābhiranekabhūtaṁ tvayā kṛtaṁ yadbhavatātha loke tvāmeva devāsurabhūsurāśca anye ca vai sthāvarajaṅgamāśca

That which, unseen by us, has become manifold, made by you in this world — the gods, the asuras, the brahmins upon earth, and all others, whether moving or unmoving — depend on you alone.

Verse 26 (shiva.rudra.144.26)

पाह्यनन्यगतीन् शम्भो सुरान्नो देववल्लभ । नष्टप्रायांस्त्रिपुरतो विनिहत्यासुरान्क्षणात्

pāhyananyagatīn śambho surānno devavallabha naṣṭaprāyāṁstripurato vinihatyāsurānkṣaṇāt

"Protect us gods, O Shambhu, who have no other refuge, O beloved of the gods — we are nearly destroyed by Tripura; slay those asuras in an instant."

Verse 27 (shiva.rudra.144.27)

मायया मोहितास्तेऽद्य भवतः परमेश्वर । विष्णुना प्रोक्तयुक्त्या त उज्झिता धर्मतः प्रभो

māyayā mohitāste'dya bhavataḥ parameśvara viṣṇunā proktayuktyā ta ujjhitā dharmataḥ prabho

"Deluded today by your own maya, O supreme lord, they have, through the device declared by Vishnu, been cast out of dharma, O Lord."

Verse 28 (shiva.rudra.144.28)

सन्त्यक्तसर्वधर्माश्च बौद्धागमसमाश्रिताः । अस्मद्भाग्यवशाज्जाता दैत्यास्ते भक्तवत्सल

santyaktasarvadharmāśca bauddhāgamasamāśritāḥ asmadbhāgyavaśājjātā daityāste bhaktavatsala

"Having abandoned all dharma and taken refuge in the Buddhist scriptures, those daityas have, by our good fortune, become vulnerable, O lover of your devotees."

Verse 29 (shiva.rudra.144.29)

सदा त्वं कार्यकर्त्ता हि देवानां शरणप्रद । वयं ते शरणापन्ना यथेच्छसि तथा कुरु

sadā tvaṁ kāryakarttā hi devānāṁ śaraṇaprada vayaṁ te śaraṇāpannā yathecchasi tathā kuru

"You are ever the accomplisher of the gods' tasks, the giver of refuge; we have taken refuge in you — do as you please."

Verse 30 (shiva.rudra.144.30)

सनत्कुमार उवाच । इति स्तुत्वा महेशानं देवास्तु पुरतः स्थिताः । कृताञ्जलिपुटा दीना आसन् सन्नतमूर्तयः

sanatkumāra uvāca iti stutvā maheśānaṁ devāstu purataḥ sthitāḥ kṛtāñjalipuṭā dīnā āsan sannatamūrtayaḥ

Sanatkumara said: Having thus praised Mahesha, the gods stood before him, palms joined, humble, their forms bowed low.

Verse 31 (shiva.rudra.144.31)

स्तुतश्चैवं सुरेन्द्राद्यैर्विष्णोर्जाप्येन चेश्वरः । अगच्छत्तत्र सर्वेशो वृषमारुह्य हर्षितः

stutaścaivaṁ surendrādyairviṣṇorjāpyena ceśvaraḥ agacchattatra sarveśo vṛṣamāruhya harṣitaḥ

Thus praised by Indra and the other gods, and by Vishnu's repeated recitation, the Lord of all, joyfully mounting his bull, came there.

Verse 32 (shiva.rudra.144.32)

विष्णुमालिङ्ग्य नन्दिशादवरुह्य प्रसन्नधीः । ददर्श सुदृशा तत्र नन्दीदत्तकरोऽखिलान्

viṣṇumāliṅgya nandiśādavaruhya prasannadhīḥ dadarśa sudṛśā tatra nandīdattakaro'khilān

Embracing Vishnu, and, his mind gracious, descending from Nandin, giving his hand to Nandi, he looked with a kindly gaze upon them all there.

Verse 33 (shiva.rudra.144.33)

अथ देवान् समालोक्य कृपादृष्ट्या हरिं हरः । प्राह गम्भीरया वाचा प्रसन्नः पार्वतीपतिः

atha devān samālokya kṛpādṛṣṭyā hariṁ haraḥ prāha gambhīrayā vācā prasannaḥ pārvatīpatiḥ

Then, looking upon the gods and upon Hari with a glance of compassion, Hara, the lord of Parvati, pleased, spoke in a deep voice.

Verse 34 (shiva.rudra.144.34)

शिव उवाच । ज्ञातं मयेदमधुना देवकार्यं सुरेश्वर । विष्णोर्मायाबलं चैव नारदस्य च धीमतः

śiva uvāca jñātaṁ mayedamadhunā devakāryaṁ sureśvara viṣṇormāyābalaṁ caiva nāradasya ca dhīmataḥ

Shiva said: "I now know this whole affair, O lord of the gods — both the power of Vishnu's maya, and that of wise Narada."

Verse 35 (shiva.rudra.144.35)

तेषामधर्मनिष्ठानां दैत्यानां देवसत्तम । पुरत्रयविनाशं च करिष्येऽहं न संशयः

teṣāmadharmaniṣṭhānāṁ daityānāṁ devasattama puratrayavināśaṁ ca kariṣye'haṁ na saṁśayaḥ

"O best of gods, I shall indeed bring about the destruction of the three cities of those daityas, now established in unrighteousness — without doubt."

Verse 36 (shiva.rudra.144.36)

परन्तु ते महादैत्या मद्भक्ता दृढमानसाः । अथ वध्या मयैव स्युर्व्याजत्यक्तवृषोत्तमाः

parantu te mahādaityā madbhaktā dṛḍhamānasāḥ atha vadhyā mayaiva syurvyājatyaktavṛṣottamāḥ

"But those great daityas were my devotees, firm of mind; should they now be slain by me, having abandoned dharma merely through deceit?"

Verse 37 (shiva.rudra.144.37)

विष्णुर्हन्यात्परो वाथ यत्त्याजितवृषाः कृताः । दैत्या मद्भक्तिरहिताः सर्वे त्रिपुरवासिनः

viṣṇurhanyātparo vātha yattyājitavṛṣāḥ kṛtāḥ daityā madbhaktirahitāḥ sarve tripuravāsinaḥ

"Let Vishnu, or another, slay them instead, since it is he who has made them abandon dharma; all the daityas, dwellers of Tripura, are now devoid of devotion to me."

Verse 38 (shiva.rudra.144.38)

इति शम्भोस्तु वचनं श्रुत्वा सर्वे दिवौकसः । विमनस्का बभूवुस्ते हरिश्चापि मुनीश्वर

iti śambhostu vacanaṁ śrutvā sarve divaukasaḥ vimanaskā babhūvuste hariścāpi munīśvara

Hearing these words of Shambhu, O lord of sages, all the gods, and Hari too, became downcast.

Verse 39 (shiva.rudra.144.39)

देवान् विष्णुमुदासीनान् दृष्ट्वा च भवकृद्विधिः । कृताञ्जलिपुरः शम्भुं ब्रह्मा वचनमब्रवीत्

devān viṣṇumudāsīnān dṛṣṭvā ca bhavakṛdvidhiḥ kṛtāñjalipuraḥ śambhuṁ brahmā vacanamabravīt

Seeing the gods and Vishnu thus despondent, Brahma, the maker of existence, with joined palms, spoke these words to Shambhu.

Verse 40 (shiva.rudra.144.40)

ब्रह्मोवाच । न किञ्चिद्विद्यते पापं यस्मात्त्वं योगवित्तमः । परमेशः परब्रह्म सदा देवर्षिरक्षकः

brahmovāca na kiñcidvidyate pāpaṁ yasmāttvaṁ yogavittamaḥ parameśaḥ parabrahma sadā devarṣirakṣakaḥ

Brahma said: "No sin whatsoever exists in this act, since you are the greatest knower of yoga, the supreme lord, the supreme Brahman, ever the protector of gods and sages."

Verse 41 (shiva.rudra.144.41)

तवैव शासनात्ते वै मोहिताः प्रेरको भवान् । त्यक्तस्वधर्मत्वत्पूजाः परवध्यास्तथापि न

tavaiva śāsanātte vai mohitāḥ prerako bhavān tyaktasvadharmatvatpūjāḥ paravadhyāstathāpi na

"It is by your own command that they have been deluded — you are the true mover behind it. Even though they have abandoned their own dharma and your worship, they are still not to be slain by another instead of you."

Verse 42 (shiva.rudra.144.42)

अतस्त्वया महादेव सुरर्षिप्राणरक्षक । साधूनां रक्षणार्थाय हन्तव्या म्लेच्छजातयः

atastvayā mahādeva surarṣiprāṇarakṣaka sādhūnāṁ rakṣaṇārthāya hantavyā mlecchajātayaḥ

"Therefore, O Mahadeva, protector of the very life of gods and sages, for the protection of the righteous, the barbarous hordes must be slain by you."

Verse 43 (shiva.rudra.144.43)

राज्ञस्तस्य न तत्पापं विद्यते धर्मतस्तव । तस्माद्रक्षेद्द्विजान् साधून् कण्टकान् वै विशोधयेत्

rājñastasya na tatpāpaṁ vidyate dharmatastava tasmādrakṣeddvijān sādhūn kaṇṭakān vai viśodhayet

"For a king acting according to his own dharma, that act incurs no sin; therefore he should protect the brahmins and the righteous, and clear away the thorns."

Verse 44 (shiva.rudra.144.44)

एवमिच्छेदिहान्यत्र राजा चेद्राज्यमात्मनः । प्रभुत्वं सर्वलोकानां तस्माद्रक्षस्व माचिरम्

evamicchedihānyatra rājā cedrājyamātmanaḥ prabhutvaṁ sarvalokānāṁ tasmādrakṣasva māciram

"So should any king desire, here or elsewhere, regarding his own kingdom; your sovereignty is over all the worlds — therefore protect it without delay."

Verse 45 (shiva.rudra.144.45)

मुनीन्द्रेशास्तथा यज्ञा वेदाः शास्त्रादयोऽखिलाः । प्रजास्ते देवदेवेश ह्यहं विष्णुरपि ध्रुवम्

munīndreśāstathā yajñā vedāḥ śāstrādayo'khilāḥ prajāste devadeveśa hyahaṁ viṣṇurapi dhruvam

"The great sages, the sacrifices, the Vedas and all the scriptures, are your subjects, O god of gods; and I myself, and Vishnu too, are surely your subjects."

Verse 46 (shiva.rudra.144.46)

देवतासार्वभौमस्त्वं सम्राट् सर्वेश्वरः प्रभो । परिवारस्तवैवैष हर्यादि सकलं जगत्

devatāsārvabhaumastvaṁ samrāṭ sarveśvaraḥ prabho parivārastavaivaiṣa haryādi sakalaṁ jagat

"You are the universal sovereign of the gods, the emperor, the lord of all; this entire universe, Hari and the rest, is indeed your own retinue."

Verse 47 (shiva.rudra.144.47)

युवराजो हरिस्तेऽज ब्रह्माहं ते पुरोहितः । राजकार्यकरः शक्रस्त्वदाज्ञापरिपालकः

yuvarājo hariste'ja brahmāhaṁ te purohitaḥ rājakāryakaraḥ śakrastvadājñāparipālakaḥ

"O unborn one, Hari is your crown prince; I, Brahma, am your household priest; Indra is the doer of royal duties, the executor of your commands."

Verse 48 (shiva.rudra.144.48)

देवा अन्येऽपि सर्वेश तव शासनयन्त्रिताः । स्वस्वकार्यकरा नित्यं सत्यं सत्यं न संशयः

devā anye'pi sarveśa tava śāsanayantritāḥ svasvakāryakarā nityaṁ satyaṁ satyaṁ na saṁśayaḥ

"The other gods too, O lord of all, are bound by your rule, ever performing their respective duties — truly, truly, without doubt."

Verse 49 (shiva.rudra.144.49)

सनत्कुमार उवाच । एतच्छ्रुत्वा वचस्तस्य ब्रह्मणः परमेश्वरः । प्रत्युवाच प्रसन्नात्मा शङ्करः सुरपो विधिम्

sanatkumāra uvāca etacchrutvā vacastasya brahmaṇaḥ parameśvaraḥ pratyuvāca prasannātmā śaṅkaraḥ surapo vidhim

Sanatkumara said: Hearing these words of Brahma, the supreme Lord Shankara, his mind pleased, lord of the gods, replied to Vidhi.

Verse 50 (shiva.rudra.144.50)

शिव उवाच । हे ब्रह्मन् यद्यहं देवराजः सम्राट् प्रकीर्त्तितः । तत्प्रकारो न मे कश्चिद् गृह्णीयां यमिह प्रभुः

śiva uvāca he brahman yadyahaṁ devarājaḥ samrāṭ prakīrttitaḥ tatprakāro na me kaścid gṛhṇīyāṁ yamiha prabhuḥ

Shiva said: "O Brahman, if I am indeed proclaimed the king of gods, the emperor, then I have no equipment of that kind, which as sovereign I might take up here."

Verse 51 (shiva.rudra.144.51)

रथो नास्ति महादिव्यस्तादृक् सारथिना सह । धनुर्बाणादिकं चापि सङ्ग्रामे जयकारकम्

ratho nāsti mahādivyastādṛk sārathinā saha dhanurbāṇādikaṁ cāpi saṅgrāme jayakārakam

"I have no such great divine chariot, together with a charioteer, nor bow and arrows and the like, that bring victory in battle."

Verse 52 (shiva.rudra.144.52)

यमास्थाय धनुर्बाणान् गृहीत्वा योज्य वै मनः । निहनिष्याम्यहं दैत्यान् प्रबलानपि सङ्गरे

yamāsthāya dhanurbāṇān gṛhītvā yojya vai manaḥ nihaniṣyāmyahaṁ daityān prabalānapi saṅgare

"Mounted upon which, taking up bow and arrows, my mind fixed, I shall slay the daityas, mighty though they be, in battle."

Verse 53 (shiva.rudra.144.53)

सनत्कुमार उवाच । अद्य सब्रह्मका देवाः सेन्द्रोपेन्द्राः प्रहर्षिताः । श्रुत्वा प्रभोस्तदा वाक्यं नत्वा प्रोचुर्महेश्वरम्

sanatkumāra uvāca adya sabrahmakā devāḥ sendropendrāḥ praharṣitāḥ śrutvā prabhostadā vākyaṁ natvā procurmaheśvaram

Sanatkumara said: Now the gods, with Brahma, together with Indra and Upendra, greatly delighted, hearing the Lord's words, bowed and spoke to Maheshvara.

Verse 54 (shiva.rudra.144.54)

देवा ऊचुः । वयं भवाम देवेश तत्प्रकारा महेश्वर । रथादिकाः तव स्वामिन्सन्नद्धाः सङ्गराय हि

devā ūcuḥ vayaṁ bhavāma deveśa tatprakārā maheśvara rathādikāḥ tava svāminsannaddhāḥ saṅgarāya hi

The gods said: "O lord of gods, great lord, we ourselves shall become that equipment — the chariot and the rest, O master, arrayed for your battle."

Verse 55 (shiva.rudra.144.55)

इत्युक्त्वा संहताः सर्वे शिवेच्छामधिगम्य ह । पृथगूचुः प्रसन्नास्ते कृताञ्जलिपुटास्सुराः

ityuktvā saṁhatāḥ sarve śivecchāmadhigamya ha pṛthagūcuḥ prasannāste kṛtāñjalipuṭāssurāḥ

Having said this, all of them, gathered together, and having learned Shiva's wish, the gods, pleased, with joined palms, spoke separately, each in turn.
