The Goddess Dispels Vishnu's Delusion
Verse 1 (shiva.rudra.164.1)
व्यास उवाच । ब्रह्मपुत्र नमस्तेऽस्तु धन्यस्त्वं शैवसत्तम । यच्छ्राविता महादिव्या कथेयं शाङ्करी शुभा
vyāsa uvāca brahmaputra namaste'stu dhanyastvaṁ śaivasattama yacchrāvitā mahādivyā katheyaṁ śāṅkarī śubhā
Vyasa said: "Salutations to you, O son of Brahma. Blessed are you, O best among the devotees of Shiva, for you have made me hear this great, divine, and auspicious tale of Shankara."
Verse 2 (shiva.rudra.164.2)
इदानीं ब्रूहि सुप्रीत्या चरितं वैष्णवं मुने । स वृन्दां मोहयित्वा तु किमकार्षीत्कुतो गतः
idānīṁ brūhi suprītyā caritaṁ vaiṣṇavaṁ mune sa vṛndāṁ mohayitvā tu kimakārṣītkuto gataḥ
"Now, O sage, tell me lovingly the account concerning Vishnu — having beguiled Vrinda, what did he do next, and where did he go?"
Verse 3 (shiva.rudra.164.3)
सनत्कुमार उवाच । शृणु व्यास महाप्राज्ञ शैवप्रवर सत्तम । वैष्णवं चरितं शम्भुचरिताढ्यं सुनिर्मलम्
sanatkumāra uvāca śṛṇu vyāsa mahāprājña śaivapravara sattama vaiṣṇavaṁ caritaṁ śambhucaritāḍhyaṁ sunirmalam
Sanatkumara said: "Listen, O highly wise Vyasa, foremost among the devotees of Shiva — this account of Vishnu, rich with Shambhu's own deeds, is utterly pure."
Verse 4 (shiva.rudra.164.4)
मौनीभूतेषु देवेषु ब्रह्मादिषु महेश्वरः । सुप्रसन्नोऽवदच्छम्भुः शरणागतवत्सलः
maunībhūteṣu deveṣu brahmādiṣu maheśvaraḥ suprasanno'vadacchambhuḥ śaraṇāgatavatsalaḥ
"When the gods, Brahma and the rest, had fallen silent, Maheshvara — Shambhu, gracious and ever affectionate toward those who seek refuge — spoke."
Verse 5 (shiva.rudra.164.5)
शम्भुरुवाच । ब्रह्मन्देववराः सर्वे भवदर्थे मया हतः । जलन्धरो मदंशोऽपि सत्यं सत्यं वदाम्यहम्
śambhuruvāca brahmandevavarāḥ sarve bhavadarthe mayā hataḥ jalandharo madaṁśo'pi satyaṁ satyaṁ vadāmyaham
Shambhu said: "O Brahma, O all you best of gods, for your sake alone I slew Jalandhara, though he was himself a portion of me — truly, truly I tell you this."
Verse 6 (shiva.rudra.164.6)
सुखमापुर्न वा ताताः सत्यं ब्रूतामराः खलु । भवत्कृते हि मे लीला निर्विकारस्य सर्वदा
sukhamāpurna vā tātāḥ satyaṁ brūtāmarāḥ khalu bhavatkṛte hi me līlā nirvikārasya sarvadā
"Have you attained happiness, dear ones, or not — tell me truly, O immortals; for my sport, though I myself am ever unchanging, is always enacted for your sake."
Verse 7 (shiva.rudra.164.7)
सनत्कुमार उवाच । अथ ब्रह्मादयो देवा हर्षादुत्फुल्ललोचनाः । प्रणम्य शिरसा रुद्रं शशंसुर्विष्णुचेष्टितम्
sanatkumāra uvāca atha brahmādayo devā harṣādutphullalocanāḥ praṇamya śirasā rudraṁ śaśaṁsurviṣṇuceṣṭitam
Sanatkumara said: "Then Brahma and the other gods, their eyes wide with joy, bowed their heads to Rudra and told him of Vishnu's plight."
Verse 8 (shiva.rudra.164.8)
देवा ऊचुः । महादेव त्वया देव रक्षिताः शत्रुजाद् भयात् । किञ्चिदन्यत्समुद्भूतं तत्र किं करवामहै
devā ūcuḥ mahādeva tvayā deva rakṣitāḥ śatrujād bhayāt kiñcidanyatsamudbhūtaṁ tatra kiṁ karavāmahai
The gods said: "O Mahadeva, O God, you have protected us from the fear that arose from our enemy. But something else has now come about — what should we do about it?"
Verse 9 (shiva.rudra.164.9)
वृन्दा विमोहिता नाथ विष्णुना हि प्रयत्नतः । भस्मीभूता द्रुतं वह्नौ परमां गतिमागता
vṛndā vimohitā nātha viṣṇunā hi prayatnataḥ bhasmībhūtā drutaṁ vahnau paramāṁ gatimāgatā
"O Lord, Vrinda was deliberately beguiled by Vishnu; swiftly turning to ash in the fire, she attained the supreme destiny."
Verse 10 (shiva.rudra.164.10)
वृन्दालावण्यसम्भ्रान्तो विष्णुस्तिष्ठति मोहितः । तच्चिताभस्मसन्धारी तव मायाविमोहितः
vṛndālāvaṇyasambhrānto viṣṇustiṣṭhati mohitaḥ taccitābhasmasandhārī tava māyāvimohitaḥ
"But Vishnu, distraught by Vrinda's beauty, remains bewildered still — he wears the ash of her funeral pyre upon himself, deluded by your own maya."
Verse 11 (shiva.rudra.164.11)
स सिद्धमुनिसङ्घैश्च बोधितोऽस्माभिरादरात् । न बुध्यते हरिः सोऽथ तव मायाविमोहितः
sa siddhamunisaṅghaiśca bodhito'smābhirādarāt na budhyate hariḥ so'tha tava māyāvimohitaḥ
"Though awakened respectfully by us and by hosts of siddhas and sages, Hari still does not come to his senses — so utterly is he deluded by your maya."
Verse 12 (shiva.rudra.164.12)
कृपां कुरु महेशान विष्णुं बोधय बोधय । त्वदधीनमिदं सर्वं प्राकृतं सचराचरम्
kṛpāṁ kuru maheśāna viṣṇuṁ bodhaya bodhaya tvadadhīnamidaṁ sarvaṁ prākṛtaṁ sacarācaram
"Show your mercy, O Mahesha; awaken Vishnu, awaken him! All this manifest world, moving and unmoving, lies under your sway."
Verse 13 (shiva.rudra.164.13)
सनत्कुमार उवाच । इत्याकर्ण्य महेशो हि वचनं त्रिदिवौकसाम् । प्रत्युवाच महालीलः स्वच्छन्दस्तान्कृताञ्जलीन्
sanatkumāra uvāca ityākarṇya maheśo hi vacanaṁ tridivaukasām pratyuvāca mahālīlaḥ svacchandastānkṛtāñjalīn
Sanatkumara said: "Hearing this appeal of the gods, the great Mahesha, of boundless sport and utterly free will, replied to them as they stood with joined palms."
Verse 14 (shiva.rudra.164.14)
महेश उवाच । हे ब्रह्मन्हे सुराः सर्वे मद्वाक्यं शृणुतादरात् । मोहिनी सर्वलोकानां मम माया दुरत्यया
maheśa uvāca he brahmanhe surāḥ sarve madvākyaṁ śṛṇutādarāt mohinī sarvalokānāṁ mama māyā duratyayā
Mahesha said: "O Brahma, O all you gods, listen respectfully to my words. My maya, which bewilders all the worlds, is exceedingly difficult to overcome."
Verse 15 (shiva.rudra.164.15)
तदधीनं जगत्सर्वं यद्देवासुरमानुषम् । तयैव मोहितो विष्णुः कामाधीनोऽभवद्धरिः
tadadhīnaṁ jagatsarvaṁ yaddevāsuramānuṣam tayaiva mohito viṣṇuḥ kāmādhīno'bhavaddhariḥ
"This whole world — gods, demons, and humans alike — is subject to it; by that very maya Vishnu was deluded, and Hari came under the sway of desire."
Verse 16 (shiva.rudra.164.16)
उमाख्या सा महादेवी त्रिदेवजननी परा । मूलप्रकृतिराख्याता सुरामा गिरिजात्मिका
umākhyā sā mahādevī tridevajananī parā mūlaprakṛtirākhyātā surāmā girijātmikā
"That supreme Great Goddess known as Uma, mother of the three gods, is declared to be the Root Prakriti — the lovely goddess who is the daughter of the mountain."
Verse 17 (shiva.rudra.164.17)
गच्छध्वं शरणं देवा विष्णुमोहापनुत्तये । शरण्यां मोहिनीं मायां शिवाख्यां सर्वकामदाम्
gacchadhvaṁ śaraṇaṁ devā viṣṇumohāpanuttaye śaraṇyāṁ mohinīṁ māyāṁ śivākhyāṁ sarvakāmadām
"Go, O gods, for refuge — to remove Vishnu's delusion — to that maya worthy of refuge, the bewitching goddess called Shivā, who grants every desire."
Verse 18 (shiva.rudra.164.18)
स्तुतिं कुरुत तस्याश्च मच्छक्तेस्तोषकारिणीम् । सुप्रसन्ना यदि च सा सर्वं कार्यं करिष्यति
stutiṁ kuruta tasyāśca macchaktestoṣakāriṇīm suprasannā yadi ca sā sarvaṁ kāryaṁ kariṣyati
"Offer to her a praise that will please my own Shakti; if she becomes fully gracious, she will accomplish the whole task."
Verse 19 (shiva.rudra.164.19)
सनत्कुमार उवाच । इत्युक्त्वा तान्सुरान् शम्भुः पञ्चास्यो भगवान्हरः । अन्तर्दधे द्रुतं व्यास सर्वैश्च स्वगणैः सह
sanatkumāra uvāca ityuktvā tānsurān śambhuḥ pañcāsyo bhagavānharaḥ antardadhe drutaṁ vyāsa sarvaiśca svagaṇaiḥ saha
Sanatkumara said: "Having said this to the gods, O Vyasa, the five-faced Lord Shambhu, blessed Hara, at once vanished, together with all his own hosts."
Verse 20 (shiva.rudra.164.20)
देवाश्च शासनाच्छम्भोर्ब्रह्माद्या हि सवासवाः । मनसा तुष्टुवुर्मूलप्रकृतिं भक्तवत्सलाम्
devāśca śāsanācchambhorbrahmādyā hi savāsavāḥ manasā tuṣṭuvurmūlaprakṛtiṁ bhaktavatsalām
"Then, at Shambhu's command, the gods, Brahma and the rest, together with Vasava, praised in their hearts that Root Prakriti who is ever affectionate to her devotees."
Verse 21 (shiva.rudra.164.21)
देवा ऊचुः । यदुद्भवाः सत्त्वरजस्तमोगुणाः सर्गस्थितिध्वंसविधानकारकाः । यदिच्छया विश्वमिदं भवाभवौ तनोति मूलप्रकृतिं नताः स्म ताम्
devā ūcuḥ yadudbhavāḥ sattvarajastamoguṇāḥ sargasthitidhvaṁsavidhānakārakāḥ yadicchayā viśvamidaṁ bhavābhavau tanoti mūlaprakṛtiṁ natāḥ sma tām
"From whom arose the three qualities — sattva, rajas, and tamas — the causes of creation, preservation, and dissolution; by whose will this universe undergoes birth and un-becoming — to that Root Prakriti we bow."
Verse 22 (shiva.rudra.164.22)
पाहि त्रयोविंशगुणान् सुशब्दितान् जगत्यशेषे समधिष्ठिता परा । यद्रूपकर्माणि जगत्त्रयोऽपि ते विदुर्न मूलप्रकृतिं नताः स्म ताम्
pāhi trayoviṁśaguṇān suśabditān jagatyaśeṣe samadhiṣṭhitā parā yadrūpakarmāṇi jagattrayo'pi te vidurna mūlaprakṛtiṁ natāḥ sma tām
"Protect the twenty-three well-known principles, O supreme one enthroned over the whole universe; whose form and deeds not even the three worlds can know — to that Root Prakriti we bow."
Verse 23 (shiva.rudra.164.23)
यद्भक्तियुक्ताः पुरुषास्तु नित्यं दारिद्र्यमोहात्ययसम्भवादीन् । न प्राप्नुवन्त्येव हि भक्तवत्सलां सदैव मूलप्रकृतिं नताः स्म ताम्
yadbhaktiyuktāḥ puruṣāstu nityaṁ dāridryamohātyayasambhavādīn na prāpnuvantyeva hi bhaktavatsalāṁ sadaiva mūlaprakṛtiṁ natāḥ sma tām
"Men who are ever devoted to her never fall into poverty, delusion, death, or repeated birth — to that Root Prakriti, ever affectionate to her devotees, we always bow."
Verse 24 (shiva.rudra.164.24)
कुरु कार्यं महादेवि देवानां नः परेश्वरि । विष्णुमोहं हर शिवे दुर्गे देवि नमोऽस्तु ते
kuru kāryaṁ mahādevi devānāṁ naḥ pareśvari viṣṇumohaṁ hara śive durge devi namo'stu te
"Accomplish this task for us, the gods, O Great Goddess, O supreme Empress; remove Vishnu's delusion, O Shivā, O Durgā, O Goddess — salutation to you."
Verse 25 (shiva.rudra.164.25)
जलन्धरस्य शम्भोश्च रणे कैलासवासिनः । प्रवृत्ते तद्वधार्थाय गौरीशासनतः शिवे
jalandharasya śambhośca raṇe kailāsavāsinaḥ pravṛtte tadvadhārthāya gaurīśāsanataḥ śive
"O Shivā, the battle between Jalandhara and Shambhu, the dweller of Kailasa, waged for his destruction, took place at Gauri's own command."
Verse 26 (shiva.rudra.164.26)
वृन्दा विमोहिता देवि विष्णुना हि प्रयत्नतः । स्ववृषात्त्याजिता वह्नौ भस्मीभूता गतिं गता
vṛndā vimohitā devi viṣṇunā hi prayatnataḥ svavṛṣāttyājitā vahnau bhasmībhūtā gatiṁ gatā
"O Goddess, Vrinda was deliberately beguiled by Vishnu, made to depart from her own virtue, and — turning to ash in the fire — attained her final destiny."
Verse 27 (shiva.rudra.164.27)
जलन्धरो हतो युद्धे तद्भयान्मोचिता वयम् । गिरिशेन कृपां कृत्वा भक्तानुग्रहकारिणा
jalandharo hato yuddhe tadbhayānmocitā vayam giriśena kṛpāṁ kṛtvā bhaktānugrahakāriṇā
"Jalandhara was slain in battle and we were freed from fear of him — all through the mercy of Girisha, who ever favors his devotees."
Verse 28 (shiva.rudra.164.28)
तदाज्ञया वयं सर्वे शरणं ते समागताः । त्वं हि शम्भुर्युवां देवि भक्तोद्धारपरायणौ
tadājñayā vayaṁ sarve śaraṇaṁ te samāgatāḥ tvaṁ hi śambhuryuvāṁ devi bhaktoddhāraparāyaṇau
"By his command we have all come here seeking refuge; for you, O Goddess, together with Shambhu, are both devoted to the deliverance of your devotees."
Verse 29 (shiva.rudra.164.29)
वृन्दालावण्यसम्भ्रान्तो विष्णुस्तिष्ठति तत्र वै । तच्चिताभस्मसन्धारी ज्ञानभ्रष्टो विमोहितः
vṛndālāvaṇyasambhrānto viṣṇustiṣṭhati tatra vai taccitābhasmasandhārī jñānabhraṣṭo vimohitaḥ
"Vishnu remains there, distraught by Vrinda's beauty, wearing the ash of her funeral pyre, fallen from wisdom, utterly bewildered."
Verse 30 (shiva.rudra.164.30)
संसिद्धसुरसङ्घैश्च बोधितोऽपि महेश्वरि । न बुध्यते हरिः सोऽथ तव मायाविमोहितः
saṁsiddhasurasaṅghaiśca bodhito'pi maheśvari na budhyate hariḥ so'tha tava māyāvimohitaḥ
"Though awakened even by hosts of perfected gods, O Maheshvari, Hari still does not come to his senses — so completely is he deluded by your maya."
Verse 31 (shiva.rudra.164.31)
कृपां कुरु महादेवि हरिं बोधय बोधय । यथा स्वलोकं पायात्स सुचित्तः सुरकार्यकृत्
kṛpāṁ kuru mahādevi hariṁ bodhaya bodhaya yathā svalokaṁ pāyātsa sucittaḥ surakāryakṛt
"Show your grace, O Great Goddess; awaken Hari, awaken him — so that, his mind restored, he may protect his own realm and carry out the work of the gods."
Verse 32 (shiva.rudra.164.32)
इति स्तुवन्तस्ते देवाः तेजोमण्डलमास्थितम् । ददृशुर्गगने तत्र ज्वालाव्याप्तदिगन्तरम्
iti stuvantaste devāḥ tejomaṇḍalamāsthitam dadṛśurgagane tatra jvālāvyāptadigantaram
"Thus praising, the gods beheld in the sky a sphere of radiant splendour, its blazing light filling every quarter of the horizon."
Verse 33 (shiva.rudra.164.33)
तन्मध्याद्भारतीं सर्वे ब्रह्माद्याश्च सवासवाः । अमराः शुश्रुवुर्व्यास कामदां व्योमचारिणीम्
tanmadhyādbhāratīṁ sarve brahmādyāśca savāsavāḥ amarāḥ śuśruvurvyāsa kāmadāṁ vyomacāriṇīm
"From within it, O Vyasa, all the immortals — Brahma and the rest, together with Vasava — heard a wish-granting voice moving through the sky."
Verse 34 (shiva.rudra.164.34)
आकाशवाण्युवाच । अहमेव त्रिधा भिन्ना तिष्ठामि त्रिविधैर्गुणैः । गौरी लक्ष्मीः सुरा ज्योती रजःसत्त्वतमोगुणैः
ākāśavāṇyuvāca ahameva tridhā bhinnā tiṣṭhāmi trividhairguṇaiḥ gaurī lakṣmīḥ surā jyotī rajaḥsattvatamoguṇaiḥ
The voice from the sky said: "I myself stand divided into three forms through the three gunas — as Gauri, Lakshmi, and radiant Sura, through the qualities of rajas, sattva, and tamas."
Verse 35 (shiva.rudra.164.35)
तत्र गच्छत यूयं वै तासामन्तिक आदरात् । मदाज्ञया प्रसन्नास्ता विधास्यन्ते तदीप्सितम्
tatra gacchata yūyaṁ vai tāsāmantika ādarāt madājñayā prasannāstā vidhāsyante tadīpsitam
"Go, all of you, respectfully into their presence; by my command they, being pleased, will accomplish what you desire."
Verse 36 (shiva.rudra.164.36)
सनत्कुमार उवाच । शृण्वतामिति तां वाचमन्तर्द्धानमगान्महः । देवानां विस्मयोत्फुल्लनेत्राणां तत्तदा मुने
sanatkumāra uvāca śṛṇvatāmiti tāṁ vācamantarddhānamagānmahaḥ devānāṁ vismayotphullanetrāṇāṁ tattadā mune
Sanatkumara said: "O sage, even as the gods, their eyes wide with wonder, listened to that voice, that splendour vanished from their sight."
Verse 37 (shiva.rudra.164.37)
ततः सर्वेऽपि ते देवाः श्रुत्वा तद्वाक्यमादरात् । गौरीं लक्ष्मीं सुरां चैव नेमुस्तद्वाक्यचोदिताः
tataḥ sarve'pi te devāḥ śrutvā tadvākyamādarāt gaurīṁ lakṣmīṁ surāṁ caiva nemustadvākyacoditāḥ
"Then all those gods, having respectfully heard that word, and moved by it, bowed down to Gauri, Lakshmi, and Sura."
Verse 38 (shiva.rudra.164.38)
तुष्टुवुश्च महाभक्त्या देवीस्ताः सकलाःसुराः । नानाविधाभिर्वाग्भिस्ते ब्रह्माद्या नतमस्तकाः
tuṣṭuvuśca mahābhaktyā devīstāḥ sakalāḥsurāḥ nānāvidhābhirvāgbhiste brahmādyā natamastakāḥ
"All the gods, with great devotion, Brahma and the rest, their heads bowed, praised those goddesses with words of many kinds."
Verse 39 (shiva.rudra.164.39)
ततोऽरं व्यास देव्यस्ता आविर्भूताश्च तत्पुरः । महाद्भुतैः स्वतेजोभिर्भासयन्त्यो दिगन्तरम्
tato'raṁ vyāsa devyastā āvirbhūtāśca tatpuraḥ mahādbhutaiḥ svatejobhirbhāsayantyo digantaram
"Then, O Vyasa, those goddesses appeared right before them, lighting up every quarter of the sky with their own wondrous splendour."
Verse 40 (shiva.rudra.164.40)
अथ ता अमरा दृष्ट्वा सुप्रसन्नेन चेतसा । प्रणम्य तुष्टुवुर्भक्त्या स्वकार्यं च न्यवेदयन्
atha tā amarā dṛṣṭvā suprasannena cetasā praṇamya tuṣṭuvurbhaktyā svakāryaṁ ca nyavedayan
"Then, seeing them, the immortals, their hearts filled with joy, bowed down and praised them with devotion, and made known their purpose."
Verse 41 (shiva.rudra.164.41)
ततश्चैताः सुरान्दृष्ट्वा प्रणतान्भक्तवत्सलाः । बीजानि प्रददुस्तेभ्यो वाक्यमूचुश्च सादरम्
tataścaitāḥ surāndṛṣṭvā praṇatānbhaktavatsalāḥ bījāni pradadustebhyo vākyamūcuśca sādaram
"Then those goddesses, affectionate toward their devotees, seeing the gods bowed before them, gave them seeds and spoke to them respectfully."
Verse 42 (shiva.rudra.164.42)
देव्य ऊचुः । इमानि तत्र बीजानि विष्णुर्यत्रावतिष्ठति । निर्वपध्वं ततः कार्यं भवतां सिद्धिमेष्यति
devya ūcuḥ imāni tatra bījāni viṣṇuryatrāvatiṣṭhati nirvapadhvaṁ tataḥ kāryaṁ bhavatāṁ siddhimeṣyati
The goddesses said: "Sow these seeds there, where Vishnu now abides; thereafter your task will surely succeed."
Verse 43 (shiva.rudra.164.43)
सनत्कुमार उवाच । इत्युक्त्वा तास्ततो देव्योऽन्तर्हिता अभवन्मुने । रुद्रविष्णुविधीनां हि शक्तयस्त्रिगुणात्मिकाः
sanatkumāra uvāca ityuktvā tāstato devyo'ntarhitā abhavanmune rudraviṣṇuvidhīnāṁ hi śaktayastriguṇātmikāḥ
Sanatkumara said: "Having said this, O sage, those goddesses — the triguna Shaktis of Rudra, Vishnu, and Brahma — vanished from sight."
Verse 44 (shiva.rudra.164.44)
ततस्तुष्टाः सुराःसर्वे ब्रह्माद्याश्च सवासवाः । तानि बीजानि सङ्गृह्य ययुर्यत्र हरिः स्थितः
tatastuṣṭāḥ surāḥsarve brahmādyāśca savāsavāḥ tāni bījāni saṅgṛhya yayuryatra hariḥ sthitaḥ
"Then all the gods, satisfied — Brahma and the rest, together with Vasava — took up those seeds and went to where Hari stood."
Verse 45 (shiva.rudra.164.45)
वृन्दाचिताभूमितले चिक्षिपुस्तानि ते सुराः । स्मृत्वा ताः संस्थितास्तत्र शिवशक्त्यंशका मुने
vṛndācitābhūmitale cikṣipustāni te surāḥ smṛtvā tāḥ saṁsthitāstatra śivaśaktyaṁśakā mune
"Those gods scattered the seeds over the ground of Vrinda's funeral pyre; and, O sage, as they remembered those goddesses, portions of Shiva's own Shakti became present there."
Verse 46 (shiva.rudra.164.46)
निक्षिप्तेभ्यश्च बीजेभ्यो वनस्पत्यस्त्रयोऽभवन् । धात्री च मालती चैव तुलसी च मुनीश्वर
nikṣiptebhyaśca bījebhyo vanaspatyastrayo'bhavan dhātrī ca mālatī caiva tulasī ca munīśvara
"From those scattered seeds, O lord of sages, three plants sprang up: Dhatri (the amla tree), Malati (jasmine), and Tulasi."
Verse 47 (shiva.rudra.164.47)
धात्र्युद्भवा स्मृता धात्री माभवा मालती स्मृता । गौरीभवा च तुलसी तमःसत्त्वरजोगुणाः
dhātryudbhavā smṛtā dhātrī mābhavā mālatī smṛtā gaurībhavā ca tulasī tamaḥsattvarajoguṇāḥ
"Dhatri, born of the goddess Dhatri, is so named; Malati, born of Ma, Lakshmi, is so named; and Tulasi, born of Gauri — these three embody, in turn, the qualities of tamas, sattva, and rajas."
Verse 48 (shiva.rudra.164.48)
विष्णुर्वनस्पतीर्दृष्ट्वा तदा स्त्रीरूपिणीर्मुने । उदतिष्ठत्तदा तासु रागातिशयविभ्रमः
viṣṇurvanaspatīrdṛṣṭvā tadā strīrūpiṇīrmune udatiṣṭhattadā tāsu rāgātiśayavibhramaḥ
"Then, O sage, seeing those plants in the form of women, Vishnu rose up, overcome with excessive passion and bewilderment toward them."
Verse 49 (shiva.rudra.164.49)
दृष्ट्वा स याचते मोहात्कामासक्तेन चेतसा । तं चापि तुलसी धात्री रागेणैवावलोकताम्
dṛṣṭvā sa yācate mohātkāmāsaktena cetasā taṁ cāpi tulasī dhātrī rāgeṇaivāvalokatām
"Seeing them, deluded, his mind attached to desire, he entreated them; and Tulasi and Dhatri too gazed upon him with passion in return."
Verse 50 (shiva.rudra.164.50)
यच्च बीजं पुरा लक्ष्म्या माययैव समर्पितम् । तस्मात्तदुद्भवा नारी तस्मिन्नीर्ष्यापराभवत्
yacca bījaṁ purā lakṣmyā māyayaiva samarpitam tasmāttadudbhavā nārī tasminnīrṣyāparābhavat
"But the woman born from the seed that had earlier been offered through Lakshmi's own maya — she, Malati, grew jealous of him."
Verse 51 (shiva.rudra.164.51)
अतः सा बर्बरीत्याख्यामवापातीव गर्हिताम् । धात्रीतुलस्यौ तद्रागात्तस्य प्रीतिप्रदे सदा
ataḥ sā barbarītyākhyāmavāpātīva garhitām dhātrītulasyau tadrāgāttasya prītiprade sadā
"For this reason she obtained the wholly disparaged name 'Barbari,' the wild one; while Dhatri and Tulasi, through their passion, remained ever dear and pleasing to him."
Verse 52 (shiva.rudra.164.52)
ततो विस्मृतदुःखोऽसौ विष्णुस्ताभ्यां सहैव तु । वैकुण्ठमगमत्तुष्टः सर्वदेवैर्नमस्कृतः
tato vismṛtaduḥkho'sau viṣṇustābhyāṁ sahaiva tu vaikuṇṭhamagamattuṣṭaḥ sarvadevairnamaskṛtaḥ
"Then Vishnu, his sorrow forgotten and now content, went together with those two — Dhatri and Tulasi — to Vaikuntha, honored on the way by all the gods."
Verse 53 (shiva.rudra.164.53)
कार्तिके मासि विप्रेन्द्र धात्री च तुलसी सदा । सर्वदेवप्रिया ज्ञेया विष्णोश्चैव विशेषतः
kārtike māsi viprendra dhātrī ca tulasī sadā sarvadevapriyā jñeyā viṣṇoścaiva viśeṣataḥ
"O foremost of Brahmins, know that in the month of Kartika, Dhatri and Tulasi are ever dear to all the gods, and especially to Vishnu."
Verse 54 (shiva.rudra.164.54)
तत्रापि तुलसी धन्यातीव श्रेष्ठा महामुने । त्यक्त्वा गणेशं सर्वेषां प्रीतिदा सर्वकामदा
tatrāpi tulasī dhanyātīva śreṣṭhā mahāmune tyaktvā gaṇeśaṁ sarveṣāṁ prītidā sarvakāmadā
"Among these, O great sage, Tulasi is the most blessed and supreme — excepting Ganesha, she is pleasing to all and fulfills every desire."
Verse 55 (shiva.rudra.164.55)
वैकुण्ठस्थं हरिं दृष्ट्वा ब्रह्मेन्द्राद्याश्च तेऽमराः । नत्वा स्तुत्वा महाविष्णुं स्वस्वधामानि वै ययुः
vaikuṇṭhasthaṁ hariṁ dṛṣṭvā brahmendrādyāśca te'marāḥ natvā stutvā mahāviṣṇuṁ svasvadhāmāni vai yayuḥ
"Seeing Hari established in Vaikuntha, Brahma, Indra, and the other immortals bowed to and praised the great Vishnu, and then went each to his own abode."
Verse 56 (shiva.rudra.164.56)
वैकुण्ठोऽपि स्वलोकस्थो भ्रष्टमोहः सुबोधवान् । सुखी चाभून्मुनिश्रेष्ठ पूर्ववत्संस्मरन् शिवम्
vaikuṇṭho'pi svalokastho bhraṣṭamohaḥ subodhavān sukhī cābhūnmuniśreṣṭha pūrvavatsaṁsmaran śivam
"And the Lord of Vaikuntha too, now settled in his own realm, freed from delusion and restored to clear understanding, became happy once more, O best of sages, remembering Shiva as before."
Verse 57 (shiva.rudra.164.57)
इत्याख्यानमघौघघ्नं सर्वकामप्रदं नृणाम् । सर्वकामविकारघ्नं सर्वविज्ञानवर्द्धनम्
ityākhyānamaghaughaghnaṁ sarvakāmapradaṁ nṛṇām sarvakāmavikāraghnaṁ sarvavijñānavarddhanam
"This account destroys the mass of sins, fulfills every desire of men, destroys all disorders born of desire, and increases all wisdom."
Verse 58 (shiva.rudra.164.58)
य इदं हि पठेन्नित्यं पाठयेद्वापि भक्तिमान् । शृणुयाच्छ्रावयेद्वापि स याति परमां गतिम्
ya idaṁ hi paṭhennityaṁ pāṭhayedvāpi bhaktimān śṛṇuyācchrāvayedvāpi sa yāti paramāṁ gatim
"Whoever, being devoted, reads this daily, or has it read, or hears it, or has it recited, attains the supreme destiny."
Verse 59 (shiva.rudra.164.59)
पठित्वा य इदं धीमानाख्यानं परमोत्तमम् । सङ्ग्रामं प्रविशेद्वीरो विजयी स्यान्न संशयः
paṭhitvā ya idaṁ dhīmānākhyānaṁ paramottamam saṅgrāmaṁ praviśedvīro vijayī syānna saṁśayaḥ
"The wise hero who, having read this most excellent account, enters into battle, becomes victorious without any doubt."
Verse 60 (shiva.rudra.164.60)
विप्रानां ब्रह्मविद्यादं क्षत्रियाणां जयप्रदम् । वैश्यानां सर्वधनदं शूद्राणां सुखदं त्विदम्
viprānāṁ brahmavidyādaṁ kṣatriyāṇāṁ jayapradam vaiśyānāṁ sarvadhanadaṁ śūdrāṇāṁ sukhadaṁ tvidam
"For Brahmins it grants knowledge of Brahman, for Kshatriyas it grants victory, for Vaishyas it grants all manner of wealth, and for Shudras it grants happiness."
Verse 61 (shiva.rudra.164.61)
शम्भुभक्तिप्रदं व्यास सर्वेषां पापनाशनम् । इहलोके परत्रापि सदा सद्गतिदायकम्
śambhubhaktipradaṁ vyāsa sarveṣāṁ pāpanāśanam ihaloke paratrāpi sadā sadgatidāyakam
"O Vyasa, this bestows devotion to Shambhu, destroys the sins of all beings, and ever grants the good destiny, both in this world and the next."
