Shankhachuda's Kingship, and His Former Birth
Verse 1 (shiva.rudra.167.1)
सनत्कुमार उवाच । स्वगेहमागते तस्मिन् शङ्खचूडे विवाहिते । तपः कृत्वा वरं प्राप्य मुमुदुर्दानवादयः
sanatkumāra uvāca svagehamāgate tasmin śaṅkhacūḍe vivāhite tapaḥ kṛtvā varaṁ prāpya mumudurdānavādayaḥ
Sanatkumara said: "When the now-married Shankhachuda returned to his own home, the demons and the rest rejoiced, for he had performed his austerity and obtained his boon."
Verse 2 (shiva.rudra.167.2)
स्वलोकादाशु निर्गत्य गुरुणा स्वेन संयुताः । सर्वेऽसुराः सम्मिलिताः समाजग्मुस्तदन्तिकम्
svalokādāśu nirgatya guruṇā svena saṁyutāḥ sarve'surāḥ sammilitāḥ samājagmustadantikam
"Setting out at once from their own realms, together with their preceptor, all the asuras gathered and came into his presence."
Verse 3 (shiva.rudra.167.3)
प्रणम्य तं सविनयं संस्तुत्य विविधादरात् । स्थितास्तत्रैव सुप्रीत्या मत्वा तेजस्विनं विभुम्
praṇamya taṁ savinayaṁ saṁstutya vividhādarāt sthitāstatraiva suprītyā matvā tejasvinaṁ vibhum
"Bowing to him with humility, praising him with reverence of many kinds, they remained there with great affection, esteeming him a mighty and radiant lord."
Verse 4 (shiva.rudra.167.4)
सोऽपि दम्भात्मजो दृष्ट्वाऽऽगतं कुलगुरुं च तम् । प्रणनाम महाभक्त्या साष्टाङ्गं परमादरात्
so'pi dambhātmajo dṛṣṭvā''gataṁ kulaguruṁ ca tam praṇanāma mahābhaktyā sāṣṭāṅgaṁ paramādarāt
"Dambha's son too, seeing his family preceptor arrive, bowed down to him in full prostration, with great devotion and utmost reverence."
Verse 5 (shiva.rudra.167.5)
अथ शुक्रः कुलाचार्यो दृष्ट्वाशिषमनुत्तमम् । वृत्तान्तं कथयामास देवदानवयोस्तदा
atha śukraḥ kulācāryo dṛṣṭvāśiṣamanuttamam vṛttāntaṁ kathayāmāsa devadānavayostadā
"Then Shukra, the family preceptor, seeing his unsurpassed good fortune, then related to him the whole account of the gods and the demons."
Verse 6 (shiva.rudra.167.6)
स्वाभाविकं च तद्वैरमसुराणां पराभवम् । विजयं निर्जराणां च जीवसाहाय्यमेव च
svābhāvikaṁ ca tadvairamasurāṇāṁ parābhavam vijayaṁ nirjarāṇāṁ ca jīvasāhāyyameva ca
"—their natural enmity, the defeat of the asuras, the victory of the immortals, and the assistance rendered to them by Jiva, the gods' own preceptor."
Verse 7 (shiva.rudra.167.7)
ततः स सम्मतं कृत्वाऽसुरैः सर्वैः समुत्सवम् । दानवाद्यसुराणां तमधिपं विदधे गुरुः
tataḥ sa sammataṁ kṛtvā'suraiḥ sarvaiḥ samutsavam dānavādyasurāṇāṁ tamadhipaṁ vidadhe guruḥ
"Thereupon, with the consent of all the asuras, amid great festivity, the guru installed him as the ruler of the demons and the other asuras."
Verse 8 (shiva.rudra.167.8)
तदा समुत्सवो जातोऽसुराणां मुदितात्मनाम् । उपायनानि सुप्रीत्या ददुस्तस्मै च तेऽखिलाः
tadā samutsavo jāto'surāṇāṁ muditātmanām upāyanāni suprītyā dadustasmai ca te'khilāḥ
"Then a great celebration arose among the asuras, their hearts filled with joy; and all of them, with deep affection, offered him gifts."
Verse 9 (shiva.rudra.167.9)
अथ दम्भात्मजो वीरः शङ्खचूडः प्रतापवान् । राज्याभिषेकमासाद्य स रेजेऽसुरराट् तदा
atha dambhātmajo vīraḥ śaṅkhacūḍaḥ pratāpavān rājyābhiṣekamāsādya sa reje'surarāṭ tadā
"Then the heroic Shankhachuda, son of Dambha, mighty in valor, having received his royal consecration, shone forth as the very emperor of the asuras."
Verse 10 (shiva.rudra.167.10)
स सेनां महतीं कर्षन्दैत्यदानवरक्षसाम् । रथमास्थाय तरसा जेतुं शक्रपुरीं ययौ
sa senāṁ mahatīṁ karṣandaityadānavarakṣasām rathamāsthāya tarasā jetuṁ śakrapurīṁ yayau
"Marshalling a vast army of daityas, danavas, and rakshasas, and mounting his chariot, he set out swiftly to conquer Indra's city."
Verse 11 (shiva.rudra.167.11)
गच्छन्स दानवेन्द्रस्तु तेषां सेवनकुर्वताम् । विरेजे शशिवद्भानां ग्रहाणां ग्रहराडिव
gacchansa dānavendrastu teṣāṁ sevanakurvatām vireje śaśivadbhānāṁ grahāṇāṁ graharāḍiva
"As he advanced, that lord of the demons, amid his radiant attendants, shone forth like the moon among the shining planets — like the very king of the planets."
Verse 12 (shiva.rudra.167.12)
आगच्छन्तं शङ्खचूडमाकर्ण्याखण्डलस्स्वराट् । निखिलैरमरैः सार्धं तेन योद्धुं समुद्यतः
āgacchantaṁ śaṅkhacūḍamākarṇyākhaṇḍalassvarāṭ nikhilairamaraiḥ sārdhaṁ tena yoddhuṁ samudyataḥ
"Hearing of Shankhachuda's advance, Indra, the sovereign, together with all the immortals, made ready to give him battle."
Verse 13 (shiva.rudra.167.13)
तदाऽसुरैःसुराणां च सङ्ग्रामस्तुमुलो ह्यभूत् । वीराऽऽनन्दकरः क्लीबभयदो रोमहर्षणः
tadā'suraiḥsurāṇāṁ ca saṅgrāmastumulo hyabhūt vīrā''nandakaraḥ klībabhayado romaharṣaṇaḥ
"Then a tumultuous battle broke out between the asuras and the gods — delighting the brave, striking terror in the fainthearted, and raising the hair on end."
Verse 14 (shiva.rudra.167.14)
महान्कोलाहलो जातो वीराणां गर्जतां रणे । वाद्यध्वनिस्तथा चाऽऽसीत्तत्र वीरत्ववर्द्धिनी
mahānkolāhalo jāto vīrāṇāṁ garjatāṁ raṇe vādyadhvanistathā cā''sīttatra vīratvavarddhinī
"A great tumult arose from the roaring warriors on the battlefield; and there too rang out the sound of instruments, ever swelling their heroic fervor."
Verse 15 (shiva.rudra.167.15)
देवाः प्रकुप्य युयुधुरसुरैर्बलवत्तराः । पराजयं च सम्प्रापुरसुरा दुद्रुवुर्भयात्
devāḥ prakupya yuyudhurasurairbalavattarāḥ parājayaṁ ca samprāpurasurā dudruvurbhayāt
"The gods, growing furious, fought the asuras with greater might; the asuras, meeting defeat, fled away in fear."
Verse 16 (shiva.rudra.167.16)
पलायमानास्तान्दृष्ट्वा शङ्खचूडः स्वयं प्रभुः । युयुधे निर्जरैःसाकं सिंहनादं प्रगर्ज्य च
palāyamānāstāndṛṣṭvā śaṅkhacūḍaḥ svayaṁ prabhuḥ yuyudhe nirjaraiḥsākaṁ siṁhanādaṁ pragarjya ca
"Seeing them flee, Shankhachuda himself, the lord, roaring a mighty lion's roar, took up the fight against the immortals."
Verse 17 (shiva.rudra.167.17)
तरसा सहसा चक्रे कदनं त्रिदिवौकसाम् । प्रदुद्रुवुः सुराः सर्वे तत्सुतेजो न सेहिरे
tarasā sahasā cakre kadanaṁ tridivaukasām pradudruvuḥ surāḥ sarve tatsutejo na sehire
"Swiftly and suddenly he wrought havoc among the dwellers of heaven; all the gods, unable to withstand his mighty splendour, fled away."
Verse 18 (shiva.rudra.167.18)
यत्र तत्र स्थिता दीना गिरीणां कन्दरासु च । तदधीना न स्वतन्त्रा निष्प्रभाः सागरा यथा
yatra tatra sthitā dīnā girīṇāṁ kandarāsu ca tadadhīnā na svatantrā niṣprabhāḥ sāgarā yathā
"Scattered here and there in mountain caves, wretched and subdued, no longer free, they became lustreless — like oceans stripped of their splendour."
Verse 19 (shiva.rudra.167.19)
सोऽपि दम्भात्मजः शूरो दानवेन्द्रः प्रतापवान् । सुराधिकारान्सञ्जह्रे सर्वाँल्लोकान्विजित्य च
so'pi dambhātmajaḥ śūro dānavendraḥ pratāpavān surādhikārānsañjahre sarvā~llokānvijitya ca
"That heroic son of Dambha, the mighty lord of the demons, having conquered all the worlds, seized for himself the offices and privileges of the gods."
Verse 20 (shiva.rudra.167.20)
त्रैलोक्यं स्ववशं चक्रे यज्ञभागांश्च कृत्स्नशः । स्वयमिन्द्रो बभूवापि शासितं निखिलं जगत्
trailokyaṁ svavaśaṁ cakre yajñabhāgāṁśca kṛtsnaśaḥ svayamindro babhūvāpi śāsitaṁ nikhilaṁ jagat
"He brought the three worlds under his own sway, together with all the shares of sacrifice; he himself became Indra, and ruled over the entire universe."
Verse 21 (shiva.rudra.167.21)
कौबेरमैन्दवं सौर्यमाग्नेयं याम्यमेव च । कारयामास वायव्यमधिकारं स्वशक्तितः
kauberamaindavaṁ sauryamāgneyaṁ yāmyameva ca kārayāmāsa vāyavyamadhikāraṁ svaśaktitaḥ
"Through his own might, he took over the offices of Kubera, the Moon, Surya, Agni, Yama, and Vayu as well."
Verse 22 (shiva.rudra.167.22)
देवानामसुराणां च दानवानां च रक्षसाम् । गन्धर्वाणां च नागानां किन्नराणां रसौकसाम्
devānāmasurāṇāṁ ca dānavānāṁ ca rakṣasām gandharvāṇāṁ ca nāgānāṁ kinnarāṇāṁ rasaukasām
"Of the gods, the asuras, the danavas, the rakshasas, the gandharvas, the nagas, the kinnaras, and the dwellers of the netherworld —"
Verse 23 (shiva.rudra.167.23)
त्रिलोकस्य परेषां च सकलानामधीश्वरः । स बभूव महावीरः शङ्खचूडो महाबली
trilokasya pareṣāṁ ca sakalānāmadhīśvaraḥ sa babhūva mahāvīraḥ śaṅkhacūḍo mahābalī
"—and of the three worlds and of all other beings besides, that great hero, the mighty Shankhachuda, became the supreme lord."
Verse 24 (shiva.rudra.167.24)
एवं स बुभुजे राज्यं राजराजेश्वरो महान् । सर्वेषां भुवनानां च शङ्खचूडश्चिरं समाः
evaṁ sa bubhuje rājyaṁ rājarājeśvaro mahān sarveṣāṁ bhuvanānāṁ ca śaṅkhacūḍaściraṁ samāḥ
"Thus the great overlord of kings, Shankhachuda, enjoyed sovereignty over all the worlds for many long years."
Verse 25 (shiva.rudra.167.25)
तस्य राज्ये न दुर्भिक्षं न मारी नाऽशुभग्रहाः । आधयो व्याधयो नैव सुखिन्यश्च प्रजाः सदा
tasya rājye na durbhikṣaṁ na mārī nā'śubhagrahāḥ ādhayo vyādhayo naiva sukhinyaśca prajāḥ sadā
"In his kingdom there was neither famine nor plague nor inauspicious planetary influence; neither mental anguish nor bodily disease — and the people were ever happy."
Verse 26 (shiva.rudra.167.26)
अकृष्टपच्या पृथिवी ददौ सस्यान्यनेकशः । ओषध्यो विविधाश्चासन्सफलाःसरसाः सदा
akṛṣṭapacyā pṛthivī dadau sasyānyanekaśaḥ oṣadhyo vividhāścāsansaphalāḥsarasāḥ sadā
"The earth, without even being ploughed, yielded manifold crops of itself; herbs of every kind were ever fruitful and full of sap."
Verse 27 (shiva.rudra.167.27)
मण्याकराश्च नितरां रत्नखन्यश्च सागराः । सदा पुष्पफला वृक्षा नद्यः सुसलिलावहाः
maṇyākarāśca nitarāṁ ratnakhanyaśca sāgarāḥ sadā puṣpaphalā vṛkṣā nadyaḥ susalilāvahāḥ
"The mines yielded gems in great abundance, and the seas were mines of gems as well; the trees were ever laden with blossom and fruit, and the rivers flowed with pure, good water."
Verse 28 (shiva.rudra.167.28)
देवान् विनाखिला जीवाः सुखिनो निर्विकारकाः । स्वस्वधर्मास्थिताः सर्वे चतुर्वर्णाश्रमाः परे
devān vinākhilā jīvāḥ sukhino nirvikārakāḥ svasvadharmāsthitāḥ sarve caturvarṇāśramāḥ pare
"Except for the gods, all beings were happy and untroubled; the four varnas and the four ashramas alike remained established in their own duties."
Verse 29 (shiva.rudra.167.29)
तस्मिन् शासति त्रैलोक्ये न कश्चिद् दुःखितोऽभवत् । भ्रातृवैरत्वमाश्रित्य केवलं दुःखिनोऽमराः
tasmin śāsati trailokye na kaścid duḥkhito'bhavat bhrātṛvairatvamāśritya kevalaṁ duḥkhino'marāḥ
"While he ruled the three worlds, no one was sorrowful; only the immortals were unhappy, on account of enmity within their own kindred."
Verse 30 (shiva.rudra.167.30)
स शङ्खचूडः प्रबलः कृष्णस्य परमः सखा । कृष्णभक्तिरतः साधुः सदा गोलोकवासिनः
sa śaṅkhacūḍaḥ prabalaḥ kṛṣṇasya paramaḥ sakhā kṛṣṇabhaktirataḥ sādhuḥ sadā golokavāsinaḥ
"That mighty Shankhachuda was Krishna's supreme companion, ever devoted to love of Krishna, virtuous by nature, an eternal dweller in Goloka."
Verse 31 (shiva.rudra.167.31)
पूर्वशापप्रभावेण दानवीं योनिमाश्रितः । न दानवमतिः सोऽभूद्दानवत्वेऽपि वै मुने
pūrvaśāpaprabhāveṇa dānavīṁ yonimāśritaḥ na dānavamatiḥ so'bhūddānavatve'pi vai mune
"By the power of a former curse, he had come to be born in a demon's womb; yet, O sage, even in his demon nature, his mind never became truly demonic."
Verse 32 (shiva.rudra.167.32)
ततः सुरगणाः सर्वे हृतराज्याः पराजिताः । सम्मन्त्र्य सर्षयस्तात प्रययुर्ब्रह्मणःसभाम्
tataḥ suragaṇāḥ sarve hṛtarājyāḥ parājitāḥ sammantrya sarṣayastāta prayayurbrahmaṇaḥsabhām
"Then all the host of gods, their kingdom seized and themselves defeated, O dear one, took counsel together with the sages, and went to Brahma's assembly."
Verse 33 (shiva.rudra.167.33)
तत्र दृष्ट्वा विधातारं नत्वा स्तुत्वा विशेषतः । ब्रह्मणे कथयामासुः सर्वं वृत्तान्तमाकुलाः
tatra dṛṣṭvā vidhātāraṁ natvā stutvā viśeṣataḥ brahmaṇe kathayāmāsuḥ sarvaṁ vṛttāntamākulāḥ
"There, seeing the Creator, bowing to him and praising him at length, the gods, in their distress, related the entire matter to Brahma."
Verse 34 (shiva.rudra.167.34)
ब्रह्मा तदा समाश्वास्य सुरान् सर्वान्मुनीनपि । तैश्च सार्द्धं ययौ लोके वैकुण्ठं सुखदं सताम्
brahmā tadā samāśvāsya surān sarvānmunīnapi taiśca sārddhaṁ yayau loke vaikuṇṭhaṁ sukhadaṁ satām
"Brahma then, having comforted all the gods and sages, went together with them to Vaikuntha, the world of happiness for the righteous."
Verse 35 (shiva.rudra.167.35)
ददर्श तत्र लक्ष्मीशं ब्रह्मा देवगणैःसह । किरीटिनं कुण्डलिनं वनमालाविभूषितम्
dadarśa tatra lakṣmīśaṁ brahmā devagaṇaiḥsaha kirīṭinaṁ kuṇḍalinaṁ vanamālāvibhūṣitam
"There Brahma, together with the host of gods, beheld the Lord of Lakshmi — crowned, wearing earrings, and adorned with a garland of forest flowers."
Verse 36 (shiva.rudra.167.36)
शङ्खचक्रगदापद्मधरं देवं चतुर्भुजम् । सनन्दनाद्यैः सिद्धैश्च सेवितं पीतवाससम्
śaṅkhacakragadāpadmadharaṁ devaṁ caturbhujam sanandanādyaiḥ siddhaiśca sevitaṁ pītavāsasam
"The four-armed God, bearing conch, discus, mace, and lotus, clad in yellow garments, attended by perfected sages such as Sanandana and the rest."
Verse 37 (shiva.rudra.167.37)
दृष्ट्वा विष्णुं सुराःसर्वे ब्रह्माद्याः समुनीश्वराः । प्रणम्य तुष्टुवुर्भक्त्या बद्धाञ्जलिकरा विभुम्
dṛṣṭvā viṣṇuṁ surāḥsarve brahmādyāḥ samunīśvarāḥ praṇamya tuṣṭuvurbhaktyā baddhāñjalikarā vibhum
"Seeing Vishnu, all the gods, Brahma and the rest, together with the great sages, bowed to that mighty Lord and, with joined palms, praised him with devotion."
Verse 38 (shiva.rudra.167.38)
देवा ऊचु देवदेव जगन्नाथ वैकुण्ठाधिपते प्रभो । रक्षास्मान् शरणापन्नान् श्रीहरे त्रिजगद्गुरो
devā ūcu devadeva jagannātha vaikuṇṭhādhipate prabho rakṣāsmān śaraṇāpannān śrīhare trijagadguro
The gods said: "O God of gods, Lord of the universe, ruler of Vaikuntha, O Lord; protect us, who have come to you for refuge, O Shri Hari, preceptor of the three worlds."
Verse 39 (shiva.rudra.167.39)
त्वमेव जगतां पाता त्रिलोकेशाच्युत प्रभो । लक्ष्मीनिवास गोविन्द भक्तप्राण नमोऽस्तु ते
tvameva jagatāṁ pātā trilokeśācyuta prabho lakṣmīnivāsa govinda bhaktaprāṇa namo'stu te
"You alone are the protector of all the worlds, O Lord of the three worlds, Achyuta; O abode of Lakshmi, Govinda, the very life-breath of your devotees — salutation to you."
Verse 40 (shiva.rudra.167.40)
इति स्तुत्वा सुराः सर्वे रुरुदुः पुरतो हरेः । तच्छ्रुत्वा भगवान्विष्णुर्ब्रह्माणमिदमब्रवीत्
iti stutvā surāḥ sarve ruruduḥ purato hareḥ tacchrutvā bhagavānviṣṇurbrahmāṇamidamabravīt
"Having thus offered their praise, all the gods wept before Hari; hearing this, the blessed Vishnu spoke thus to Brahma."
Verse 41 (shiva.rudra.167.41)
विष्णुरुवाच । किमर्थमागतोऽसि त्वं वैकुण्ठं योगिदुर्लभम् । किं कष्टं ते समुद्भूतं तत् त्वं वद ममाग्रतः
viṣṇuruvāca kimarthamāgato'si tvaṁ vaikuṇṭhaṁ yogidurlabham kiṁ kaṣṭaṁ te samudbhūtaṁ tat tvaṁ vada mamāgrataḥ
Vishnu said: "For what reason have you come to Vaikuntha, so hard even for yogis to attain? Tell me before me what trouble has befallen you."
Verse 42 (shiva.rudra.167.42)
सनत्कुमार उवाच । इति श्रुत्वा हरेर्वाक्यं प्रणम्य च मुहुर्मुहुः । बद्धाञ्जलिपुटो भूत्वा विनयानतकन्धरः
sanatkumāra uvāca iti śrutvā harervākyaṁ praṇamya ca muhurmuhuḥ baddhāñjalipuṭo bhūtvā vinayānatakandharaḥ
Sanatkumara said: "Hearing this word of Hari, bowing again and again, with joined palms and his head humbly bowed —"
Verse 43 (shiva.rudra.167.43)
वृत्तान्तं कथयामास शङ्खचूडकृतं तदा । देवकष्टसमाख्यानं पुरो विष्णोः परात्मनः
vṛttāntaṁ kathayāmāsa śaṅkhacūḍakṛtaṁ tadā devakaṣṭasamākhyānaṁ puro viṣṇoḥ parātmanaḥ
"he then related, before Vishnu the Supreme Soul, the account of all that Shankhachuda had done — the tale of the gods' distress."
Verse 44 (shiva.rudra.167.44)
हरिस्तद्वचनं श्रुत्वा सर्वतः सर्वभाववित् । प्रहस्योवाच भगवांस्तद्रहस्यं विधिं प्रति
haristadvacanaṁ śrutvā sarvataḥ sarvabhāvavit prahasyovāca bhagavāṁstadrahasyaṁ vidhiṁ prati
"Hari, who knows every state of being from every side, hearing that account, smiled, and the Lord told that secret to the Creator."
Verse 45 (shiva.rudra.167.45)
श्रीभगवानुवाच । शङ्खचूडस्य वृत्तान्तं सर्वं जानामि पद्मज । मद्भक्तस्य च गोपस्य महातेजस्विनः पुरा
śrībhagavānuvāca śaṅkhacūḍasya vṛttāntaṁ sarvaṁ jānāmi padmaja madbhaktasya ca gopasya mahātejasvinaḥ purā
The Blessed Lord said: "O lotus-born one, I know the entire account of Shankhachuda — how, in a former birth, he was my devotee, a gopa of great splendour."
Verse 46 (shiva.rudra.167.46)
शृणु तत् सर्ववृत्तान्तमितिहासं पुरातनम् । सन्देहो नैव कर्तव्यः शं करिष्यति शङ्करः
śṛṇu tat sarvavṛttāntamitihāsaṁ purātanam sandeho naiva kartavyaḥ śaṁ kariṣyati śaṅkaraḥ
"Hear that entire account, this ancient history; let there be no doubt whatever — Shankara himself will bring about our welfare."
Verse 47 (shiva.rudra.167.47)
सर्वोपरि च यस्यास्ति शिवलोकः परात्परः । यत्र संराजते शम्भुः परब्रह्म परेश्वरः
sarvopari ca yasyāsti śivalokaḥ parātparaḥ yatra saṁrājate śambhuḥ parabrahma pareśvaraḥ
"Above all worlds there exists the realm of Shiva, higher than the highest, where Shambhu, the Supreme Brahman, the Supreme Lord, reigns."
Verse 48 (shiva.rudra.167.48)
प्रकृतेः पुरुषस्यापि योऽधिष्ठाता त्रिशक्तिधृक् । निर्गुणः सगुणः सोऽपि परञ्ज्योतिः स्वरूपवान्
prakṛteḥ puruṣasyāpi yo'dhiṣṭhātā triśaktidhṛk nirguṇaḥ saguṇaḥ so'pi parañjyotiḥ svarūpavān
"He presides even over both Prakriti and Purusha, bears the three Shaktis, is both without qualities and with them — his very nature is the Supreme Light."
Verse 49 (shiva.rudra.167.49)
यस्याङ्गजास्तु वै ब्रह्मंस्त्रयःसृष्ट्यादिकारकाः । सत्त्वादिगुणसम्पन्ना विष्णुब्रह्महराभिधाः
yasyāṅgajāstu vai brahmaṁstrayaḥsṛṣṭyādikārakāḥ sattvādiguṇasampannā viṣṇubrahmaharābhidhāḥ
"O Brahma, from his own being sprang three sons who are the agents of creation and the rest — named Vishnu, Brahma, and Hara, each endowed with the qualities of sattva and the others."
Verse 50 (shiva.rudra.167.50)
स एव परमात्मा हि विहरत्युमया सह । यत्र मायाविनिर्मुक्तो नित्यानित्य प्रकल्पकः
sa eva paramātmā hi viharatyumayā saha yatra māyāvinirmukto nityānitya prakalpakaḥ
"That very Supreme Soul sports there together with Uma, where, utterly free of maya, he ordains both the eternal and the transient."
Verse 51 (shiva.rudra.167.51)
तत्समीपे च गोलोको गोशाला शङ्करस्य वै । तस्येच्छया च मद्रूपः कृष्णो वसति तत्र ह
tatsamīpe ca goloko gośālā śaṅkarasya vai tasyecchayā ca madrūpaḥ kṛṣṇo vasati tatra ha
"Near that place lies Goloka, which is indeed Shankara's own cow-pasture; and by his will, my own form as Krishna dwells there."
Verse 52 (shiva.rudra.167.52)
तद्गवां रक्षणार्थाय तेनाज्ञप्तः सदा सुखी । तत्सम्प्राप्तसुखः सोऽपि सङ्क्रीडति विहारवित्
tadgavāṁ rakṣaṇārthāya tenājñaptaḥ sadā sukhī tatsamprāptasukhaḥ so'pi saṅkrīḍati vihāravit
"Commanded by him to protect those cows, ever content, having attained that very happiness, he too sports there, skilled in divine play."
Verse 53 (shiva.rudra.167.53)
तस्य नारी समाख्याता राधेति जगदम्बिका । प्रकृतेः परमा मूर्तिः पञ्चमी सुविहारिणी
tasya nārī samākhyātā rādheti jagadambikā prakṛteḥ paramā mūrtiḥ pañcamī suvihāriṇī
"His consort is known as Radha, the Mother of the universe, the supreme form of Prakriti — the fifth of her forms, ever delighting in divine sport."
Verse 54 (shiva.rudra.167.54)
बहुगोपाश्च गोप्यश्च तत्र सन्ति तदङ्गजाः । सुविहारपरा नित्यं राधाकृष्णानुवर्तिनः
bahugopāśca gopyaśca tatra santi tadaṅgajāḥ suvihāraparā nityaṁ rādhākṛṣṇānuvartinaḥ
"Many gopas and gopis are there as well, born of a portion of their own being, ever intent on sport, ever following Radha and Krishna."
Verse 55 (shiva.rudra.167.55)
स एव लीलया शम्भोरिदानीं मोहितोऽनया । सम्प्राप्तो दानवीं योनिं मुधा शापात्स्वदुःखदाम्
sa eva līlayā śambhoridānīṁ mohito'nayā samprāpto dānavīṁ yoniṁ mudhā śāpātsvaduḥkhadām
"That very Sudama, now, by Shambhu's own divine play, bewildered on account of her curse, has come to be born, quite needlessly, in a demon's womb that brings him suffering."
Verse 56 (shiva.rudra.167.56)
रुद्रशूलेन तन्मृत्युः कृष्णेन विहितः पुरा । ततः स्वदेहमुत्सृज्य पार्षदः स भविष्यति
rudraśūlena tanmṛtyuḥ kṛṣṇena vihitaḥ purā tataḥ svadehamutsṛjya pārṣadaḥ sa bhaviṣyati
"His death by Rudra's trident was ordained by Krishna long ago; thereafter, casting off his body, he shall become an attendant once again."
Verse 57 (shiva.rudra.167.57)
इति विज्ञाय देवेश न भयं कर्तुमर्हसि । शङ्करं शरणं याहि स सद्यः शं विधास्यति
iti vijñāya deveśa na bhayaṁ kartumarhasi śaṅkaraṁ śaraṇaṁ yāhi sa sadyaḥ śaṁ vidhāsyati
"Knowing this, O Lord of gods, you have no cause for fear. Go for refuge to Shankara — he will bring about welfare at once."
Verse 58 (shiva.rudra.167.58)
अहं त्वं चामराः सर्वे तिष्ठन्त्विह विसाध्वसाः
ahaṁ tvaṁ cāmarāḥ sarve tiṣṭhantviha visādhvasāḥ
"Let me, you, and all the immortals remain here, free from all apprehension."
Verse 59 (shiva.rudra.167.59)
सनत्कुमार उवाच । इत्युक्त्वा सविधिर्विष्णुः शिवलोकं जगाम ह । संस्मरन्मनसा शम्भुं सर्वेशं भक्तवत्सलम्
sanatkumāra uvāca ityuktvā savidhirviṣṇuḥ śivalokaṁ jagāma ha saṁsmaranmanasā śambhuṁ sarveśaṁ bhaktavatsalam
Sanatkumara said: "Having said this, Vishnu, together with the Creator, went to the world of Shiva, remembering in his heart Shambhu, the Lord of all, ever affectionate toward his devotees."
