Shiva's Teaching, for Shankhachuda's Slaying

Verse 1 (shiva.rudra.169.1)

सनत्कुमार उवाच । अथाकर्ण्य वचः शम्भुर्हरिविध्योः सुदीनयोः । उवाच विहसन्वाण्या मेघनादगभीरया

sanatkumāra uvāca athākarṇya vacaḥ śambhurharividhyoḥ sudīnayoḥ uvāca vihasanvāṇyā meghanādagabhīrayā

Sanatkumara said: "Then, hearing the words of Hari and Brahma, both utterly humbled, Shambhu smiled and spoke, his voice deep as the rumble of clouds."

Verse 2 (shiva.rudra.169.2)

शिव उवाच । हे हरे वत्स हे ब्रह्मंस्त्यजतं सर्वशो भयम् । शङ्खचूडोद्भवं भद्रं सम्भविष्यत्यसंशयम्

śiva uvāca he hare vatsa he brahmaṁstyajataṁ sarvaśo bhayam śaṅkhacūḍodbhavaṁ bhadraṁ sambhaviṣyatyasaṁśayam

Shiva said: "O Hari, dear child, O Brahma, cast off all your fear entirely; from this matter of Shankhachuda, good will surely come — of this there is no doubt."

Verse 3 (shiva.rudra.169.3)

शङ्खचूडस्य वृत्तान्तं सर्वं जानामि तत्त्वतः । कृष्णभक्तस्य गोपस्य सुदाम्नश्च पुरा प्रभो

śaṅkhacūḍasya vṛttāntaṁ sarvaṁ jānāmi tattvataḥ kṛṣṇabhaktasya gopasya sudāmnaśca purā prabho

"O Lord, I know in full truth the entire account of Shankhachuda — how, in a former birth, he was Sudama, the gopa devoted to Krishna."

Verse 4 (shiva.rudra.169.4)

मदाज्ञया हृषीकेशो कृष्णरूपं विधाय च । गोशालायां स्थितो रम्ये गोलोके मदधिष्ठिते

madājñayā hṛṣīkeśo kṛṣṇarūpaṁ vidhāya ca gośālāyāṁ sthito ramye goloke madadhiṣṭhite

"By my own command, Hrishikesha, assuming the form of Krishna, dwelt in that cow-pasture, in the delightful Goloka over which I myself preside."

Verse 5 (shiva.rudra.169.5)

स्वतन्त्रोऽहमिति स्वं स मोहं मत्वा गतः पुरा । क्रीडाः समकरोद्बह्वीः स्वैरवर्तीव मोहितः

svatantro'hamiti svaṁ sa mohaṁ matvā gataḥ purā krīḍāḥ samakarodbahvīḥ svairavartīva mohitaḥ

"Thinking, 'I am independent,' he formerly fell into that very delusion regarding himself; and, deluded, acting as though wholly self-willed, he engaged in many manner of sport."

Verse 6 (shiva.rudra.169.6)

तं दृष्ट्वा मोहयत्युग्रं तस्याहं मायया स्वया । तेषां संहृत्य सद्बुद्धिं शापं दापितवान् किल

taṁ dṛṣṭvā mohayatyugraṁ tasyāhaṁ māyayā svayā teṣāṁ saṁhṛtya sadbuddhiṁ śāpaṁ dāpitavān kila

"Seeing him, I, through my own maya, bewildered him yet further and more fiercely; withdrawing their sound judgment, I was indeed the cause of the curse being pronounced upon them."

Verse 7 (shiva.rudra.169.7)

इत्थं कृत्वा स्वलीलां तां मायां संहृतवानहम् । ज्ञानयुक्तास्तदा ते तु मुक्तमोहाः सुबुद्धयः

itthaṁ kṛtvā svalīlāṁ tāṁ māyāṁ saṁhṛtavānaham jñānayuktāstadā te tu muktamohāḥ subuddhayaḥ

"Having thus performed my own sport, I withdrew that maya; then they, endowed with knowledge, freed from delusion, became of sound understanding once more."

Verse 8 (shiva.rudra.169.8)

समीपमागतास्ते मे दीनीभूय प्रणम्य माम् । अकुर्वन्सुनुतिं भक्त्या करौ बध्वा विनम्रकाः

samīpamāgatāste me dīnībhūya praṇamya mām akurvansunutiṁ bhaktyā karau badhvā vinamrakāḥ

"They came into my presence, humbled, and, bowing before me, offered fine praise with devotion, their hands joined together in humility."

Verse 9 (shiva.rudra.169.9)

वृत्तान्तमवदन् सर्वं लज्जाकुलितमानसाः । ऊचुर्मत्पुरतो दीना रक्ष रक्षेति वै गिरः

vṛttāntamavadan sarvaṁ lajjākulitamānasāḥ ūcurmatpurato dīnā rakṣa rakṣeti vai giraḥ

"Their minds troubled with shame, they told me the entire matter; humbled before me, they spoke these words: 'Protect us, protect us.'"

Verse 10 (shiva.rudra.169.10)

तदा त्वहं भवस्तेषां सन्तुष्टः प्रोक्तवान् वचः । भयं त्यजत हे कृष्ण यूयं सर्वे मदाज्ञया

tadā tvahaṁ bhavasteṣāṁ santuṣṭaḥ proktavān vacaḥ bhayaṁ tyajata he kṛṣṇa yūyaṁ sarve madājñayā

"Then I, Bhava, pleased with them, spoke these words: 'Abandon your fear, O Krishna, all of you, by my command.'"

Verse 11 (shiva.rudra.169.11)

रक्षकोऽहं सदा प्रीत्या सुभद्रं वो भविष्यति । मदिच्छयाऽखिलं जातमिदं सर्वं न संशयः

rakṣako'haṁ sadā prītyā subhadraṁ vo bhaviṣyati madicchayā'khilaṁ jātamidaṁ sarvaṁ na saṁśayaḥ

"I am ever your protector, with love; only good shall befall you. All this has come about entirely by my own will — of this there is no doubt."

Verse 12 (shiva.rudra.169.12)

स्वस्थानं गच्छ त्वं सार्द्धं राधया पार्षदेन च । दानवस्तु भवेत्सोऽयं भारतेऽत्र न संशयः

svasthānaṁ gaccha tvaṁ sārddhaṁ rādhayā pārṣadena ca dānavastu bhavetso'yaṁ bhārate'tra na saṁśayaḥ

"Go to your own abode, together with Radha and your attendant; and this one shall indeed become a demon here on the earth — without any doubt."

Verse 13 (shiva.rudra.169.13)

शापोद्धारं करिष्येऽहं युवयोः समये खलु । मदुक्तमिति सन्धार्य शिरसा राधया सह

śāpoddhāraṁ kariṣye'haṁ yuvayoḥ samaye khalu maduktamiti sandhārya śirasā rādhayā saha

"At the proper time, I myself shall bring about your release from the curse. Holding my word firmly in his heart, bowing his head, together with Radha —"

Verse 14 (shiva.rudra.169.14)

श्रीकृष्णोऽमोददत्यन्तं स्वस्थानमगमत्सुधीः । न्यष्ठातां सभयं तत्र मदाराधनतत्परौ

śrīkṛṣṇo'modadatyantaṁ svasthānamagamatsudhīḥ nyaṣṭhātāṁ sabhayaṁ tatra madārādhanatatparau

"Shri Krishna, the wise one, greatly rejoicing, departed to his own abode; the two of them dwelt there, fearful still, but intent upon my worship."

Verse 15 (shiva.rudra.169.15)

मत्वाखिलं मदधीनमस्वतन्त्रं निजं च वै । स सुदामाऽभवद्राधाशापतो दानवेश्वरः

matvākhilaṁ madadhīnamasvatantraṁ nijaṁ ca vai sa sudāmā'bhavadrādhāśāpato dānaveśvaraḥ

"Knowing that everything is subject to me, and that he himself is not truly independent, that Sudama, through Radha's curse, became the lord of the demons."

Verse 16 (shiva.rudra.169.16)

शङ्खचूडाभिधो देवद्रोही धर्मविचक्षणः । क्लिश्नाति सुबलात्कृत्स्नं सदा देवगणं कुधीः

śaṅkhacūḍābhidho devadrohī dharmavicakṣaṇaḥ kliśnāti subalātkṛtsnaṁ sadā devagaṇaṁ kudhīḥ

"Named Shankhachuda, hostile to the gods, though himself skilled in matters of dharma, that ill-minded one now torments, by sheer strength, the entire host of gods continually."

Verse 17 (shiva.rudra.169.17)

मन्मायामोहितःसोऽतिदुष्टमन्त्रिसहायवान् । तद्भयं त्यजताश्वेव मयि शास्तरि वै सति

manmāyāmohitaḥso'tiduṣṭamantrisahāyavān tadbhayaṁ tyajatāśveva mayi śāstari vai sati

"Bewildered by my own maya, aided by exceedingly wicked ministers — cast off your fear of him at once, for with me as your ruler, there is nothing to fear."

Verse 18 (shiva.rudra.169.18)

सनत्कुमार उवाच । इत्यूचिवान् शिवो यावद्धरिब्रह्मपुरः कथाम् । अभवत्तावदन्यच्च चरितं तन्मुने शृणु

sanatkumāra uvāca ityūcivān śivo yāvaddharibrahmapuraḥ kathām abhavattāvadanyacca caritaṁ tanmune śṛṇu

Sanatkumara said: "Even as Shiva was relating this account before Hari and Brahma, something else occurred meanwhile — hear that too, O sage."

Verse 19 (shiva.rudra.169.19)

तस्मिन्नेवान्तरे कृष्णो राधया पार्षदैः सह । सद्गोपैराययौ शम्भुमनुकूलयितुं प्रभुम्

tasminnevāntare kṛṣṇo rādhayā pārṣadaiḥ saha sadgopairāyayau śambhumanukūlayituṁ prabhum

"In that very interval, Krishna, together with Radha, his attendants, and the good gopas, arrived there to win the favour of the Lord Shambhu."

Verse 20 (shiva.rudra.169.20)

प्रभुं प्रणम्य सद्भक्त्या मिलित्वा हरिमादरात् । सम्मतो विधिना प्रीत्या सन्तस्थौ शिवशासनात्

prabhuṁ praṇamya sadbhaktyā militvā harimādarāt sammato vidhinā prītyā santasthau śivaśāsanāt

"Bowing to the Lord with true devotion, and meeting Hari respectfully, welcomed with affection by Brahma, he remained there at Shiva's own command."

Verse 21 (shiva.rudra.169.21)

ततः शम्भुं पुनर्नत्वा तुष्टाव विहिताञ्जलिः । श्रीकृष्णो मोहनिर्मुक्तो ज्ञात्वा तत्त्वं शिवस्य हि

tataḥ śambhuṁ punarnatvā tuṣṭāva vihitāñjaliḥ śrīkṛṣṇo mohanirmukto jñātvā tattvaṁ śivasya hi

"Then, bowing once more to Shambhu, with joined palms, Shri Krishna, now freed from delusion and having come to know the truth of Shiva, praised him."

Verse 22 (shiva.rudra.169.22)

श्रीकृष्ण उवाच । देवदेव महादेव परब्रह्म सताङ्गते । क्षमस्व चापराधं मे प्रसीद परमेश्वर

śrīkṛṣṇa uvāca devadeva mahādeva parabrahma satāṅgate kṣamasva cāparādhaṁ me prasīda parameśvara

Shri Krishna said: "O God of gods, Mahadeva, Supreme Brahman, refuge of the virtuous — forgive my offense; be gracious, O Supreme Lord."

Verse 23 (shiva.rudra.169.23)

त्वत्तः शर्व च सर्वं च त्वयि सर्वं महेश्वर । सर्वं त्वं निखिलाधीश प्रसीद परमेश्वर

tvattaḥ śarva ca sarvaṁ ca tvayi sarvaṁ maheśvara sarvaṁ tvaṁ nikhilādhīśa prasīda parameśvara

"From you, O Sharva, comes everything, and in you everything abides, O Maheshvara. You are all things, O Lord of the entire universe — be gracious, O Supreme Lord."

Verse 24 (shiva.rudra.169.24)

त्वं ज्योतिः परमं साक्षात्सर्वव्यापी सनातनः । त्वया नाथेन गौरीश सनाथाःसकला वयम्

tvaṁ jyotiḥ paramaṁ sākṣātsarvavyāpī sanātanaḥ tvayā nāthena gaurīśa sanāthāḥsakalā vayam

"You are the very Supreme Light itself, all-pervading, eternal. With you, O Lord of Gauri, as our master, we are all truly protected."

Verse 25 (shiva.rudra.169.25)

सर्वोपरि निजं मत्वा विहरन्मोहमाश्रितः । तत्फलं प्राप्तवानस्मि शापं प्राप्तः सवामकः

sarvopari nijaṁ matvā viharanmohamāśritaḥ tatphalaṁ prāptavānasmi śāpaṁ prāptaḥ savāmakaḥ

"Thinking myself supreme above all, and sporting in that delusion, I have received its fruit — together with my attendant, I have obtained the curse."

Verse 26 (shiva.rudra.169.26)

पार्षदप्रवरो यो मे सुदामा नाम गोपकः । स राधाशापतः स्वामिन्दानवीं योनिमाश्रितः

pārṣadapravaro yo me sudāmā nāma gopakaḥ sa rādhāśāpataḥ svāmindānavīṁ yonimāśritaḥ

"He who was my foremost attendant, the gopa named Sudama, has now, O Lord, through Radha's curse, come to inhabit a demon's womb."

Verse 27 (shiva.rudra.169.27)

अस्मानुद्धर दुर्गेश प्रसीद परमेश्वर । शापोद्धारं कुरुष्वाद्य पाहि नः शरणागतान्

asmānuddhara durgeśa prasīda parameśvara śāpoddhāraṁ kuruṣvādya pāhi naḥ śaraṇāgatān

"Deliver us, O Lord of Durga; be gracious, O Supreme Lord. Bring about, this very day, our release from this curse; protect us, who have come to you for refuge."

Verse 28 (shiva.rudra.169.28)

इत्युक्त्वा विररामैव श्रीकृष्णो राधया सह । प्रसन्नोऽभूच्छिवस्तत्र शरणागतवत्सलः

ityuktvā virarāmaiva śrīkṛṣṇo rādhayā saha prasanno'bhūcchivastatra śaraṇāgatavatsalaḥ

"Having said this, Shri Krishna, together with Radha, fell silent; and there Shiva, ever affectionate toward those who seek refuge, became pleased."

Verse 29 (shiva.rudra.169.29)

श्रीशिव उवाच । हे कृष्ण गोपिकानाथ भयं त्यज सुखी भव । मयानुगृह्णता तात सर्वमाचरितं त्विदम्

śrīśiva uvāca he kṛṣṇa gopikānātha bhayaṁ tyaja sukhī bhava mayānugṛhṇatā tāta sarvamācaritaṁ tvidam

Shri Shiva said: "O Krishna, Lord of the gopis, cast off your fear and be at peace. Dear one, all this has been enacted by me alone, out of my own grace toward you."

Verse 30 (shiva.rudra.169.30)

सम्भविष्यति ते भद्रं गच्छ स्वस्थानमुत्तमम् । स्थातव्यं स्वाधिकारे च सावधानतया सदा

sambhaviṣyati te bhadraṁ gaccha svasthānamuttamam sthātavyaṁ svādhikāre ca sāvadhānatayā sadā

"Good fortune shall be yours; go now to your own excellent abode. You must ever remain, with due vigilance, established in your own domain."

Verse 31 (shiva.rudra.169.31)

विहरस्व यथाकामं मां विज्ञाय परात्परम् । स्वकार्यं कुरु निर्व्यग्रं राधया पार्षदैः खलु

viharasva yathākāmaṁ māṁ vijñāya parātparam svakāryaṁ kuru nirvyagraṁ rādhayā pārṣadaiḥ khalu

"Having known me as beyond the highest, sport as you please; carry out your own work, untroubled, together with Radha and your attendants."

Verse 32 (shiva.rudra.169.32)

वाराहे प्रवरे कल्पे तरुण्या राधया सह । शापप्रभावं भुक्त्वा वै पुनरायास्यति स्वकम्

vārāhe pravare kalpe taruṇyā rādhayā saha śāpaprabhāvaṁ bhuktvā vai punarāyāsyati svakam

"In the excellent Varaha Kalpa, together with the youthful Radha, having undergone the effect of this curse, he shall come once more to his own true state."

Verse 33 (shiva.rudra.169.33)

सुदामा पार्षदो यो हि तव कृष्ण प्रियप्रियः । दानवीं योनिमाश्रित्येदानीं क्लिश्नाति वै जगत्

sudāmā pārṣado yo hi tava kṛṣṇa priyapriyaḥ dānavīṁ yonimāśrityedānīṁ kliśnāti vai jagat

"O Krishna, that attendant Sudama, most dear to you, having now come to inhabit a demon's birth, is presently tormenting the world."

Verse 34 (shiva.rudra.169.34)

शापप्रभावाद्राधाया देवशत्रुश्च दानवः । शङ्खचूडाभिधः सोऽति दैत्यपक्षी सुरद्रुहः

śāpaprabhāvādrādhāyā devaśatruśca dānavaḥ śaṅkhacūḍābhidhaḥ so'ti daityapakṣī suradruhaḥ

"By the power of Radha's curse he has become a demon, an enemy of the gods — named Shankhachuda, fiercely partial to the daityas and hostile to the gods."

Verse 35 (shiva.rudra.169.35)

तेन निःसारिता देवाः सेन्द्रा नित्यं प्रपीडिताः । हृताधिकारा विकृताः सर्वे याता दिशो दश

tena niḥsāritā devāḥ sendrā nityaṁ prapīḍitāḥ hṛtādhikārā vikṛtāḥ sarve yātā diśo daśa

"By him the gods, together with Indra, have been driven out, constantly afflicted; their offices seized, they have all fled, transformed, to the ten directions."

Verse 36 (shiva.rudra.169.36)

ब्रह्माच्युतौ तदर्थे हीहागतौ शरणं मम । तेषां क्लेशविनिर्मोक्षं करिष्ये नात्र संशयः

brahmācyutau tadarthe hīhāgatau śaraṇaṁ mama teṣāṁ kleśavinirmokṣaṁ kariṣye nātra saṁśayaḥ

"It is for this reason that Brahma and Achyuta have come here to me for refuge; I shall surely bring about the release of the gods from their affliction — of this there is no doubt."

Verse 37 (shiva.rudra.169.37)

सनत्कुमार उवाच । इत्युक्त्वा शङ्करः कृष्णं पुनः प्रोवाच सादरम् । हरिं विधिं समाभाष्य वचनं क्लेशनाशनम्

sanatkumāra uvāca ityuktvā śaṅkaraḥ kṛṣṇaṁ punaḥ provāca sādaram hariṁ vidhiṁ samābhāṣya vacanaṁ kleśanāśanam

Sanatkumara said: "Having said this to Krishna, Shankara then spoke once again, respectfully addressing Hari and Brahma with words that dispel affliction."

Verse 38 (shiva.rudra.169.38)

शिव उवाच । हे हरे हे विधे प्रीत्या ममेदं वचनं शृणु । गच्छतं त्वरितं तातौ देवानन्दाय निर्भयम्

śiva uvāca he hare he vidhe prītyā mamedaṁ vacanaṁ śṛṇu gacchataṁ tvaritaṁ tātau devānandāya nirbhayam

Shiva said: "O Hari, O Brahma, listen lovingly to these my words. Go quickly, dear ones, without fear, for the joy and welfare of the gods."

Verse 39 (shiva.rudra.169.39)

कैलासवासिनं रुद्रं मद्रूपं पूर्णमुत्तमम् । देवकार्यार्थमुद्भूतं पृथगाकृतिधारिणम्

kailāsavāsinaṁ rudraṁ madrūpaṁ pūrṇamuttamam devakāryārthamudbhūtaṁ pṛthagākṛtidhāriṇam

"Go to Rudra, the dweller of Kailasa, my own complete and supreme form, who has manifested, bearing a distinct shape, for the sake of the gods' affairs —"

Verse 40 (shiva.rudra.169.40)

एतदर्थे हि मद्रूपः परिपूर्णतमः प्रभुः । कैलासे भक्तवशतः सन्तिष्ठति गिरौ हरे

etadarthe hi madrūpaḥ paripūrṇatamaḥ prabhuḥ kailāse bhaktavaśataḥ santiṣṭhati girau hare

"For this very purpose, O Hari, that supremely complete Lord, my own form, remains established on Mount Kailasa, out of devotion to his devotees."

Verse 41 (shiva.rudra.169.41)

मत्तस्त्वत्तो न भेदोऽस्ति युवयोः सेव्य एव सः । चराचराणां सर्वेषां सुरादीनां च सर्वदा

mattastvatto na bhedo'sti yuvayoḥ sevya eva saḥ carācarāṇāṁ sarveṣāṁ surādīnāṁ ca sarvadā

"There is no difference between me, you, and him; he alone is to be worshipped, always, by you both and by all beings — moving and unmoving, gods and the rest."

Verse 42 (shiva.rudra.169.42)

आवयोर्भेदकर्ता यः स नरो नरकं व्रजेत् । इहापि प्राप्नुयात्कष्टं पुत्रपौत्रविवर्जितः

āvayorbhedakartā yaḥ sa naro narakaṁ vrajet ihāpi prāpnuyātkaṣṭaṁ putrapautravivarjitaḥ

"Whoever, a mere mortal, sets up a distinction between us two shall go to hell; even in this world, he shall suffer, bereft of sons and grandsons."

Verse 43 (shiva.rudra.169.43)

इत्युक्तवन्तं दुर्गेशं प्रणम्य च मुहुर्मुहुः । राधया सहितः कृष्णः स्वस्थानं सगणो ययौ

ityuktavantaṁ durgeśaṁ praṇamya ca muhurmuhuḥ rādhayā sahitaḥ kṛṣṇaḥ svasthānaṁ sagaṇo yayau

"Bowing again and again to the Lord of Durga, who had spoken thus, Krishna, together with Radha and his hosts, departed to his own abode."

Verse 44 (shiva.rudra.169.44)

हरिर्ब्रह्मा च तौ व्यास सानन्दौ गतसाध्वसौ । मुहुर्मुहुः प्रणम्येशं वैकुण्ठं ययतुर्द्रुतम्

harirbrahmā ca tau vyāsa sānandau gatasādhvasau muhurmuhuḥ praṇamyeśaṁ vaikuṇṭhaṁ yayaturdrutam

"O Vyasa, Hari and Brahma, both filled with joy, their fear now gone, bowing again and again to the Lord, swiftly went on to Vaikuntha."

Verse 45 (shiva.rudra.169.45)

तत्रागत्याखिलं वृत्तं देवेभ्यो विनिवेद्य तौ । तानादाय ब्रह्मविष्णू कैलासं ययतुर्गिरिम्

tatrāgatyākhilaṁ vṛttaṁ devebhyo vinivedya tau tānādāya brahmaviṣṇū kailāsaṁ yayaturgirim

"Arriving there, they related the entire matter to the gods; then Brahma and Vishnu, taking them along, went on to Mount Kailasa."

Verse 46 (shiva.rudra.169.46)

तत्र दृष्ट्वा महेशानं पार्वतीवल्लभं प्रभुम् । दीनरक्षात्तदेहं च सगुणं देवनायकम्

tatra dṛṣṭvā maheśānaṁ pārvatīvallabhaṁ prabhum dīnarakṣāttadehaṁ ca saguṇaṁ devanāyakam

"There, seeing the great Lord Mahesha — the beloved of Parvati, protector of the lowly, embodied, possessed of qualities, leader of the gods —"

Verse 47 (shiva.rudra.169.47)

तुष्टुवुः पूर्ववत्सर्वे भक्त्या गद्गदया गिरा । करौ बद्ध्वा नतस्कन्धा विनयेन समन्विताः

tuṣṭuvuḥ pūrvavatsarve bhaktyā gadgadayā girā karau baddhvā nataskandhā vinayena samanvitāḥ

"all of them, as before, praised him with devotion, their voices choked with feeling, their hands joined, their heads bowed low in humility."

Verse 48 (shiva.rudra.169.48)

देवा ऊचुः । देवदेव महादेव गिरिजानाथ शङ्कर । वयं त्वां शरणापन्ना रक्ष देवान्भयाकुलान्

devā ūcuḥ devadeva mahādeva girijānātha śaṅkara vayaṁ tvāṁ śaraṇāpannā rakṣa devānbhayākulān

The gods said: "O God of gods, Mahadeva, Lord of Girija, Shankara! We have come to you for refuge; protect us gods, troubled as we are with fear."

Verse 49 (shiva.rudra.169.49)

शङ्खचूडं दानवेन्द्रं जहि देवनिषूदनम् । तेन विक्लाविता देवाः सङ्ग्रामे च पराजिताः

śaṅkhacūḍaṁ dānavendraṁ jahi devaniṣūdanam tena viklāvitā devāḥ saṅgrāme ca parājitāḥ

"Slay Shankhachuda, the lord of the demons, destroyer of the gods; by him the gods have been made timid and have suffered defeat in battle."

Verse 50 (shiva.rudra.169.50)

हृताधिकाराः कुतले विचरन्ति यथा नराः । देवलोको हि दुर्दृश्यस्तेषामासीच्च तद्भयात्

hṛtādhikārāḥ kutale vicaranti yathā narāḥ devaloko hi durdṛśyasteṣāmāsīcca tadbhayāt

"Robbed of their offices, they wander in the netherworld like ordinary mortals; out of fear of him, even the sight of heaven has become impossible for them."

Verse 51 (shiva.rudra.169.51)

दीनोद्धार कृपासिन्धो देवानुद्धर सङ्कटात् । शक्रं भयान्महेशान हत्वा तं दानवाधिपम्

dīnoddhāra kṛpāsindho devānuddhara saṅkaṭāt śakraṁ bhayānmaheśāna hatvā taṁ dānavādhipam

"O deliverer of the lowly, ocean of compassion, rescue the gods from this peril. O Mahesha, by slaying that lord of the demons, free Indra from his fear."

Verse 52 (shiva.rudra.169.52)

इति श्रुत्वा वचः शम्भुर्देवानां भक्तवत्सलः । उवाच विहसन् वाण्या मेघनादगभीरया

iti śrutvā vacaḥ śambhurdevānāṁ bhaktavatsalaḥ uvāca vihasan vāṇyā meghanādagabhīrayā

"Hearing this appeal of the gods, Shambhu, ever affectionate toward his devotees, smiled and spoke in a voice deep as the rumble of thunderclouds."

Verse 53 (shiva.rudra.169.53)

श्रीशङ्कर उवाच । हे हरे हे विधे देवाः स्वस्थानं गच्छत ध्रुवम् । शङ्खचूडं वधिष्यामि सगणं नात्र संशयः

śrīśaṅkara uvāca he hare he vidhe devāḥ svasthānaṁ gacchata dhruvam śaṅkhacūḍaṁ vadhiṣyāmi sagaṇaṁ nātra saṁśayaḥ

Shri Shankara said: "O Hari, O Brahma, O gods, go now, assuredly, to your own abodes. I shall slay Shankhachuda, together with his hosts — of this there is no doubt at all."

Verse 54 (shiva.rudra.169.54)

सनत्कुमार उवाच । इत्याकर्ण्य महेशस्य वचः पीयूषसन्निभम् । ते सर्वे प्रमुदा ह्यासन्नष्टं मत्वा च दानवम्

sanatkumāra uvāca ityākarṇya maheśasya vacaḥ pīyūṣasannibham te sarve pramudā hyāsannaṣṭaṁ matvā ca dānavam

Sanatkumara said: "Hearing these nectar-like words of Mahesha, all of them became greatly rejoiced, regarding the demon as good as already destroyed."

Verse 55 (shiva.rudra.169.55)

हरिर्जगाम वैकुण्ठं सत्यलोके विधिस्तदा । प्रणिपत्य महेशं च सुराद्याः स्वपदं ययुः

harirjagāma vaikuṇṭhaṁ satyaloke vidhistadā praṇipatya maheśaṁ ca surādyāḥ svapadaṁ yayuḥ

"Hari departed to Vaikuntha, and Brahma then to Satyaloka; and, bowing before Mahesha, the gods and the rest went each to their own abode."
