Sanatkumara said: Hearing this from his own true son, Shiva, lord of the Pramathas and sovereign of the three worlds, enraged, after long meditation, wrought a wonder never before seen — with a body radiant as the sun's rays, chanting the Sama called Pragayat with a laugh, by that very name he destroyed that darkness.

Verse 22 (shiva.rudra.184.22)

Verse 25 (shiva.rudra.184.25)

"When he was defeated, and Shukra, by his lore and his power, began once more to bring back to life the demons slain in battle, then he, bound like a beast, was brought by the ganas to the Lord of Beings — and that slayer of Tripura swallowed the guru of the demons."

Verse 27 (shiva.rudra.184.27)

"With Shukra thus destroyed, that whole refuge of the gods' enemies was defeated, shattered, and utterly crushed, thoroughly ground down by the gods — by the vast hosts of beings, exulting as they fed upon the demons' corpses, by headless torsos dancing about, by beings brandishing hands raised with sharp arrows and spears,"

Verse 28 (shiva.rudra.184.28)

"by reckless vetalas, by birds with harsh talons and beaks, by wolves of every kind, by beings whose mouths were crammed with fragments of corpses and the dead, across that scattered field of battle — and that father of the line of Kanakakashipu, after fighting long against Hari, Hara, and Mahendra, was at last defeated."

Verse 29 (shiva.rudra.184.29)

"Standing there, fighting with all manner of weapons fallen on the battlefield, and when those too were spent, he afflicted even Rudra together with the mountain-king's daughter — and in this same way, with trees, serpents, showers of thunderbolts and nets of weapons, with monstrous forms and illusions, with hundreds of deceitful contrivances and the sorcery of Shambara,"

"and there, to conquer the Lord of the Mountains, he wrought yet another deceitful device — that mighty hero, wise as the very slayer of Tripura himself, his mind unconquerable through the pride of his hundred boons, invulnerable even to the gods, his body instantly torn by countless weapons and missiles —"

"That goddess, standing on the battlefield, her two feet adorning the very earth, was praised by all the gods; then, impelled by the Blessed Shiva, ravenous with hunger, that goddess drank of the demons' flowing blood — that most scalding, pure mire of blood dripping from the mouth of the field."

Verse 37 (shiva.rudra.184.37)

"Then that demon, alone, even with his blood run dry, fought on against Girisha with the blows of his knees and the soles of his feet, terrible as the thunderbolt, his very claws become like thunderbolts, striking with mouth, arms, and head — remembering the eternal warrior's dharma ordained in his own lineage."

Verse 38 (shiva.rudra.184.38)

"At last he was quieted in battle by the Lord of the Pramathas — his heart pierced, impaled upon the trident, held aloft in the sky like a fixed pillar — his lower body scorched dry by the sun's rays, his worn frame drenched by clouds heavy with rain and wind."

Verse 39 (shiva.rudra.184.39)

"Wasted by the sun's rays, his body crumbling like flakes of frost, even in that state that foremost demon would not give up his life — then Shambhu, ocean of supreme compassion, was pleased, and lovingly bestowed upon that demon, as he praised him, the rank of a Ganapati."

Verse 40 (shiva.rudra.184.40)

"Then, at the war's end, the lords of the worlds — Hari, Brahma, and all the rest — with the manifold hymns proper to each, duly worshiped the Lord of the Pramathas, and, satisfying him fully with their great praises, heads bowed, glad, crying 'Victory! Victory!', became at peace."

Verse 41 (shiva.rudra.184.41)

"Then Hara, together with all of them, rejoicing there in the mountain-king's cave, dismissed his own various gana-divisions duly worshiped with manifold offerings, and, gladdened at regaining the mountain-king's daughter, gave himself to play — and welcomed too his own son, now freed from that dreadful devouring mouth and known blameless, into that play by his own command."
