brahmovāca | nārada tvaṁ śṛṇu mune śivāgamanamuttamam | kailāse parvataśreṣṭhe kuberasya tapobalāt

Brahma said: Now, O Narada, hear the sublime story of Shiva's coming to Kailasa, foremost of mountains, brought about by the power of Kubera's austerity.

Verse 2 (shiva.rudra.20.2)

nidhipatvavaraṁ dattvā gatvā svasthānamuttamam | vicintya hṛdi viśveśaḥ kuberavaradāyakaḥ

Having granted Kubera the excellent boon of lordship over treasures, and having returned to his own supreme abode, Vishveshvara, the giver of that boon, reflected within his heart:

O sage, then by Shiva's command all of them, their desires now fulfilled, went rejoicing each to his own abode — and I too went, together with Vishnu.

Verse 47 (shiva.rudra.20.47)

Shambhu seated Vishnu and me both upon a seat, and, addressing us at length and showing us his grace, spoke with great affection —

śiva uvāca | he hare he vidhe tātau yuvāṁ priyatarau mama | surottamau trijagato'vanasargakarau sadā

Shiva said: 'O Hari, O Vidhi (Brahma), you two are dearest to me like fathers — foremost among the gods, the eternal preservers and creators of the three worlds.'

Verse 49 (shiva.rudra.20.49)

ityākarṇya vacaḥ śambhoḥ supraṇamya tadājñayā | ahaṁ hariśca svaṁ dhāmāgamāva prītamānasau

Hearing these words of Shambhu, and having duly bowed to him, Hari and I, both with joyful hearts, went by his leave each to our own abode.

Verse 51 (shiva.rudra.20.51)

At that very time, Shankara, greatly pleased, joyfully seated the lord of treasures, took his hand, and spoke these auspicious words —

Verse 52 (shiva.rudra.20.52)

tava premṇā vaśībhūto mitratāmagamaṁ sakhe | svasthānaṁ gaccha vibhayaḥ sahāyo'haṁ sadānagha

'O friend, subdued by your love, I have come to your friendship. Go now to your own abode without fear, O sinless one — I am always your helper.'

Verse 53 (shiva.rudra.20.53)

Hearing these words of Shambhu, Kubera, his heart filled with joy, went by his leave, rejoicing, to his own abode.

Verse 54 (shiva.rudra.20.54)

sa uvāsa girau śambhuḥ kailāse parvatottame | sagaṇo yoganirataḥ svacchando dhyānatatparaḥ

Shambhu then dwelt upon Kailasa, foremost of mountains, together with his hosts, ever intent upon yoga, unfettered, and ever given to meditation.

Verse 55 (shiva.rudra.20.55)

kvaciddadhyau svamātmānaṁ kvacidyogarato'bhavat | itihāsaṁ gaṇānprītyāvādītsvacchandamānasaḥ

Sometimes he meditated upon his own self, sometimes he was absorbed in yoga; and sometimes, with an unfettered mind, he would delight in recounting ancient tales to his hosts.

Verse 56 (shiva.rudra.20.56)

kvacitkailāsakudharasusthāneṣu maheśvaraḥ | vijahāra gaṇaiḥ prītyā vividheṣu vihāravit

And sometimes Maheshvara, knowing well the art of sport, would sport with his hosts in the many lovely places of Mount Kailasa, in delight and in manifold ways.

Verse 57 (shiva.rudra.20.57)

itthaṁ rudrasvarūpo'sau śaṅkaraḥ parameśvaraḥ | akārṣītsvagirau līlā nānā yogivaro'pi yaḥ

Thus did that supreme Lord Shankara, in his very form as Rudra, though himself the foremost of yogis, perform such divine sports upon his own mountain.

Verse 58 (shiva.rudra.20.58)

nītvā kālaṁ kiyantaṁ so'patnīkaḥ parameśvaraḥ | paścādavāpa svāṁ patnīṁ dakṣapatnīsamudbhavām

For some time the supreme Lord remained without a consort; and afterward he obtained his own wife, she who was born of Daksha's own wife.

Verse 59 (shiva.rudra.20.59)
