Rudra Samhita · Chapter 28
The Nature of Vasanta (Spring)
Verse 1 (shiva.rudra.28.1)
sūta uvāca | ityākarṇya vacastasya brahmaṇo hi prajāpateḥ | prasannamānaso bhūtvā taṁ provāca sa nāradaḥ
Suta said: Having heard these words of Brahma, the Lord of creatures, Narada, his mind now pleased, spoke to him.
Verse 2 (shiva.rudra.28.2)
nārada uvāca | brahman vidhe mahābhāga viṣṇuśiṣya mahāmate | dhanyastvaṁ śivabhakto hi paratattvapradarśakaḥ
Narada said: O Brahma, O Creator, greatly blessed and wise one, blessed indeed are you, a devotee of Shiva, revealer of the supreme truth.
Verse 3 (shiva.rudra.28.3)
śrāvitā sukathā divyā śivabhaktivivardhinī | arundhatyāstathā tasyāḥ svarūpāyāḥ pare bhave
You have caused me to hear this beautiful, divine tale, one that deepens devotion to Shiva — the story of Arundhati and of her own former existence.
Verse 4 (shiva.rudra.28.4)
idānīṁ brūhi dharmajña pavitraṁ caritaṁ param | śivasya parapāpaghnaṁ maṅgalapradamuttamam
Now tell me, O knower of dharma, that supreme and sacred story of Shiva — one that destroys the greatest of sins and grants the highest blessing.
Verse 5 (shiva.rudra.28.5)
gṛhītadāre kāme ca hṛṣṭe teṣu gateṣu ca | sandhyāyāṁ kiṁ tapastaptuṁ gatāyāmabhavattataḥ
When Kama, having taken a wife, rejoiced, and when they all had gone their ways, and Sandhya too had departed to perform austerity — what happened then?
Verse 6 (shiva.rudra.28.6)
sūta uvāca | iti śrutvā vacastasya ṛṣervai bhāvitātmanaḥ | suprasannataro bhūtvā brahmā vacanamabravīt
Suta said: Having heard these words of that sage of purified soul, Brahma, growing still more pleased, spoke.
Verse 7 (shiva.rudra.28.7)
brahmovāca | śṛṇu nārada viprendra tadeva caritaṁ śubham | śivalīlānvitaṁ bhaktyā dhanyastvaṁ śivasevakaḥ
Brahma said: Listen, Narada, foremost of Brahmins, to that same auspicious story, filled with Shiva's divine play; blessed are you, a servant of Shiva.
Verse 8 (shiva.rudra.28.8)
ahaṁ vimohitastāta yadaivāntarhitaḥ purā | acintayaṁ sadāhaṁ tacchambhuvākyaviṣārditaḥ
My son, when I had once withdrawn from view, deluded as I was, tormented by Shambhu's stinging words, I brooded on this constantly.
Verse 9 (shiva.rudra.28.9)
cintayitvā ciraṁ citte śivamāyāvimohitaḥ | śive cerṣyāmakārṣaṁ hi tacchṛṇuṣva vadāmi te
Having brooded long in my heart, deluded by Shiva's own Maya, I conceived jealousy toward Shiva — listen to that; I shall tell you.
Verse 10 (shiva.rudra.28.10)
athāhamagamaṁ tatra yatra dakṣādayaḥ sthitāḥ | saratiṁ madanaṁ dṛṣṭvā samado'haṁ hi kiñcana
Then I went to where Daksha and the others were gathered, and seeing Madana together with Rati, I became somewhat intoxicated.
Verse 11 (shiva.rudra.28.11)
dakṣamābhāṣya suprītyā parānputrāṁśca nārada | avocaṁ vacanaṁ so'haṁ śivamāyāvimohitaḥ
O Narada, addressing Daksha and my other sons with great affection, I, deluded by Shiva's Maya, spoke these words.
Verse 12 (shiva.rudra.28.12)
brahmovāca | he dakṣa he marīcyādyāḥ sutāḥ śṛṇuta madvacaḥ | śrutvopāyaṁ vidheyaṁ hi mama kaṣṭāpanuttaye
[Brahma continued:] 'O Daksha, O sons beginning with Marichi, hear my words; and having heard them, devise some remedy to remove my distress.'
Verse 13 (shiva.rudra.28.13)
kāntābhilāṣamātraṁ me dṛṣṭvā śambhuragarhayat | māṁ ca yuṣmānmahāyogī dhikkāraṁ kṛtavānbahu
Seeing only my longing for a wife, Shambhu reproached me; that great yogi heaped much scorn upon both me and all of you.
Verse 14 (shiva.rudra.28.14)
Tormented by this grief, I find no peace anywhere; some effort must truly be made so that he too may take a wife.
Verse 15 (shiva.rudra.28.15)
yathā gṛhṇātu kāntāṁ sa sukhī syāṁ duḥkhavarjitaḥ | durlabhaḥ sa tu kāmo me paraṁ manye vicārataḥ
So that he may take a wife, and I may become happy and free of sorrow; yet, on reflection, I think that this desire of mine is exceedingly hard to fulfill.
Verse 16 (shiva.rudra.28.16)
kāntābhilāṣamātraṁ me dṛṣṭvā śambhuragarhayat | munīnāṁ purataḥ kasmātsa kāntāṁ saṅgrahīṣyati
Seeing merely my longing for a bride, Shambhu reproached me — why then would he, before the very eyes of the sages, ever take a bride for himself?
Verse 17 (shiva.rudra.28.17)
kā vā nārī triloke'smin yā bhavettanmanaḥsthitā | yogamārgamavajñāpya tasya mohaṁ kariṣyati
And what woman in these three worlds could ever take a place in his mind and, causing him to disregard the path of yoga, delude him?
Verse 18 (shiva.rudra.28.18)
manmatho'pi samartho no bhaviṣyatyasya mohane | nitāntayogī rāmāṇāṁ nāmāpi sahate na saḥ
Even Manmatha shall not be able to delude him; that consummate yogi cannot bear so much as the mention of women.
Verse 19 (shiva.rudra.28.19)
parigrahaṁ vinā caiva hareṇa kathayādinā | madhyamā ca bhavetsṛṣṭistadvācā nānyavāritā
Without marriage, by Hara's word alone and the like, creation would remain incomplete; and his decree cannot otherwise be turned aside.
Verse 20 (shiva.rudra.28.20)
bhuvi kecidbhaviṣyanti mama vadhyā mahāsurāḥ | vadhyāḥ keciddharernūnaṁ kecicchambhorupāyataḥ
Upon this earth, certain great demons shall be destined to be slain by me, certain others surely by Hari, and certain others through some stratagem of Shambhu.
Verse 21 (shiva.rudra.28.21)
saṁsāravimukhe śambhau tathaikāntavirāgiṇi | asmādṛte na karmānyat kariṣyati na saṁśayaḥ
Shambhu, averse to worldly life and wholly given to detachment, will undertake no other task without this — of this there is no doubt.
Verse 22 (shiva.rudra.28.22)
ityuktvā tanayāṁścāhaṁ dakṣādīn sunirīkṣya ca | saratiṁ madanaṁ tatra sānandamagadaṁ tataḥ
Having said this, and having looked closely upon my sons headed by Daksha, I then spoke joyfully there to Madana, together with Rati.
Verse 23 (shiva.rudra.28.23)
brahmovāca | matputravara kāma tvaṁ sarvathā sukhadāyakaḥ | madvacaḥ śṛṇu suprītyā svapatnyā pitṛvatsala
Brahma said: O Kama, best of my sons, ever a bestower of joy — listen with love to my words, together with your wife, O devoted son.
Verse 24 (shiva.rudra.28.24)
anayā sahacāriṇyā rājase tvaṁ manobhava | eṣā ca bhavatā patyā yuktā saṁśobhate bhṛśam
With this companion of yours, O Manobhava, you shine in splendor; and she too, joined with you as her husband, is greatly resplendent.
Verse 25 (shiva.rudra.28.25)
yathā striyā hṛṣīkeśo hariṇā sā yathā ramā | kṣaṇadā vidhunā yuktā tayā yukto yathā vidhuḥ
As Hrishikesha shines with his consort, as Rama shines with Hari, as night is joined in beauty with the moon, and the moon with night,
Verse 26 (shiva.rudra.28.26)
tathaiva yuvayoḥ śobhā dāmpatyaṁ ca puraskṛtam | atastvaṁ jagataḥ keturviśvaketurbhaviṣyasi
—just so is the splendor of you two, your marriage held foremost of all; therefore you shall become the very banner of the world, the standard of the universe.
Verse 27 (shiva.rudra.28.27)
jagaddhitāya vatsa tvaṁ mohayasva pinākinām | yathāśu sumanaḥ śambhuḥ kuryāddārapratigraham
For the good of the world, my child, delude the wielder of the Pinaka bow, so that Shambhu, his heart made gracious, may swiftly accept a bride.
Verse 28 (shiva.rudra.28.28)
vijane snigdhadeśe tu parvateṣu saraḥsu ca | yatra yatra prayātīśastatra tatrānayā saha
In lonely and pleasant places, on mountains and by lakes, wherever the Lord may go, there, together with her,
Verse 29 (shiva.rudra.28.29)
mohaya tvaṁ yatātmānaṁ vanitāvimukhaṁ haram | tvadṛte vidyate nānyaḥ kaścidasya vimohakaḥ
—delude that self-controlled Hara, who is averse to women; apart from you, there is no other capable of bewildering him.
Verse 30 (shiva.rudra.28.30)
bhūte hare sānurāge bhavato'pi manobhava | śāpopaśāntirbhavitā tasmādātmahitaṁ kuru
O Manobhava, once Hara comes to be filled with passion, the cessation of your own curse shall follow as well; so act now for your own good.
Verse 31 (shiva.rudra.28.31)
sānurāgo varārohāṁ yadīcchati maheśvaraḥ | tadā bhavo'pi yogyāryastvāṁ ca santārayiṣyati
If Maheshvara, moved by passion, comes to desire a fair bride, then Bhava too, that worthy and noble one, shall deliver you from your curse.
Verse 32 (shiva.rudra.28.32)
tasmājjāyādvitīyastvaṁ yatasva haramohane | viśvasya bhava ketustvaṁ mohayitvā maheśvaram
Therefore strive with all your power to delude Hara; and having deluded Maheshvara, become the very banner of the universe.
Verse 33 (shiva.rudra.28.33)
brahmovāca | iti śrutvā vaco me hi janakasya jagatprabhoḥ | uvāca manmathastathyaṁ tadā māṁ jagatāṁ patim
Brahma said: Hearing these words of mine, his father and lord of the world, Manmatha then spoke to me, the lord of the worlds, in true and honest words.
Verse 34 (shiva.rudra.28.34)
manmatha uvāca | kariṣye'haṁ tava vibho vacanācchambhumohanam | kiṁ tu yoṣinmamāstraṁ me tatkāntāṁ bhagavan sṛja
Manmatha said: At your command, O Lord, I shall bewilder Shambhu. But woman is my true weapon — so, divine one, fashion for me a lovely companion for this purpose.
Verse 35 (shiva.rudra.28.35)
mayā sammohite śambhau yayā tasyānumohanam | kartavyamadhunā dhātastatropāyaṁ paraṁ kuru
When Shambhu is once bewildered by me, his fuller enchantment must then be accomplished by some means; now, O Creator, devise for this the very best method.
Verse 36 (shiva.rudra.28.36)
brahmovāca | evaṁvādini kandarpe dhātāhaṁ sa prajāpatiḥ | kayā sammohanīyosāviti cintāmayāmaham
Brahma said: When Kandarpa had spoken thus, I, the Creator and Lord of creatures, fell to thinking — 'By what means shall he be bewitched?'
Verse 37 (shiva.rudra.28.37)
cintāviṣṭasya me tasya niḥśvāso yo viniḥsṛtaḥ | tasmādvasantaḥ sañjātaḥ puṣpavrātavibhūṣitaḥ
From the very breath that escaped me as I sat lost in thought, Vasanta was born, adorned with masses of blossoms.
Verse 38 (shiva.rudra.28.38)
śoṇarājīvasaṅkāśaḥ phullatāmarasekṣaṇaḥ | sandhyoditākhaṇḍaśaśipratimāsyaḥ sunāsikaḥ
Ruddy as a red lotus, his eyes like fully blossomed lotuses, his face like the unbroken moon risen at twilight, his nose finely formed,
Verse 39 (shiva.rudra.28.39)
śārṅgavaccaraṇāvartaḥ śyāmakuñcitamūrdhajaḥ | sandhyāṁśumālisadṛśaḥ kuṇḍaladvayamaṇḍitaḥ
his feet curved like a bow, his dark hair falling in curls, resembling the sun garlanded with the rays of twilight, adorned with a pair of earrings,
Verse 40 (shiva.rudra.28.40)
pramattebhagatiḥ pīnāyatadorunnatāṁsakaḥ | kambugrīvaḥ suvistīrṇahṛdayaḥ pīnasanmukhaḥ
his gait like a rutting elephant's, his arms full and long, his shoulders raised, his neck like a conch shell, his chest broad, his face full and handsome,
Verse 41 (shiva.rudra.28.41)
sarvāṅgasundaraḥ śyāmaḥ sampūrṇaḥ sarvalakṣaṇaiḥ | darśanīyatamaḥ sarvamohanaḥ kāmavardhanaḥ
beautiful in every limb, dark of hue, perfect in every auspicious mark, most delightful to behold, bewitching to all, and one who kindles desire itself.
Verse 42 (shiva.rudra.28.42)
etādṛśe samutpanne vasante kusumākare | vavau vāyuḥ susurabhiḥ pādapā api puṣpitāḥ
When such a Vasanta, that very wellspring of flowers, had thus come into being, a most fragrant wind began to blow, and the trees too burst into blossom.
Verse 43 (shiva.rudra.28.43)
pikā vineduḥ śataśaḥ pañcamaṁ madhurasvanāḥ | praphullapadmā abhavansarasyaḥ svacchapuṣkarāḥ
Cuckoos by the hundreds sang out the fifth note in sweet tones, and the lakes grew full of blooming lotuses, their waters clear.
Verse 44 (shiva.rudra.28.44)
tamutpannamahaṁ vīkṣya tadā tādṛśamuttamam | hiraṇyagarbho madanamagadaṁ madhuraṁ vacaḥ
Seeing him thus born, so excellent in every way, I, Hiranyagarbha, then spoke sweet words to Madana.
Verse 45 (shiva.rudra.28.45)
brahmovāca | evaṁ sa manmathanibhaḥ sadā sahacaro'bhavat | ānukūlyaṁ tava kṛte sarvaṁ devaḥ kariṣyati
Brahma said: 'Thus this one, resembling Manmatha himself, shall ever be your companion; this god shall do everything to your advantage.'
Verse 46 (shiva.rudra.28.46)
yathāgneḥ pavano mitraṁ sarvatropakariṣyati | tathāyaṁ bhavato mitraṁ sadā tvāmanuyāsyati
As the wind, friend to fire, aids it everywhere, so shall this one, your friend, ever follow close behind you.
Verse 47 (shiva.rudra.28.47)
vasaterantahetutvādvasantākhyo bhavatvayam | tavānugamanaṁ karma tathā lokānurañjanam
Since he brings about the end of confinement indoors, let him be known by the name Vasanta; his task shall be to follow after you, and to delight the world.
Verse 48 (shiva.rudra.28.48)
asau vasantaśṛṅgāro vāsanto malayānilaḥ | bhavettu suhṛdo bhāvaḥ sadā tvadvaśavartinaḥ
This ornament of spring, the vernal breeze from the Malaya hills, shall ever be a spirit of friendship, wholly subject to your will.
Verse 49 (shiva.rudra.28.49)
vivvokādyāstathā hāvāścatuṣṣaṣṭikalāstathā | ratyāḥ kurvantu sauhṛdyaṁ suhṛdaste yathā tava
Coy glances and the other amorous arts, and the sixty-four skills as well — Rati's companions all — let them, too, be your friends and show you their goodwill.
Verse 50 (shiva.rudra.28.50)
ebhiḥ sahacaraiḥ kāma vasantapramukhairbhavān | mohayasva mahādevaṁ ratyā saha mahodyamaḥ
With these companions, O Kama, Vasanta foremost among them, and together with Rati, exert your utmost effort to bewilder Mahadeva.
Verse 51 (shiva.rudra.28.51)
ahaṁ tāṁ kāminīṁ tāta bhāvayiṣyāmi yatnataḥ | manasā suvicāryaiva yā haraṁ mohayiṣyati
My child, I myself shall, with great effort and careful thought, bring into being that woman who shall in time bewilder Hara.
Verse 52 (shiva.rudra.28.52)
brahmovāca | evamukto mayā kāmaḥ surajyeṣṭhena harṣitaḥ | nanāma caraṇau me'pi sa patnīsahitastadā
Brahma said: Thus addressed by me, eldest among the gods, Kama, filled with joy, together with his wife, then bowed down at my feet.
Verse 53 (shiva.rudra.28.53)
dakṣaṁ praṇamya tān sarvānmānasānabhivādya ca | yatrātmā gatavān śambhustatsthānaṁ manmatho yayau
Having bowed to Daksha and saluted all those mind-born sons, Manmatha then set out for that place to which Shambhu himself had gone.
