Rudra Samhita · Chapter 40
The Wedding Festival of Sati
Verse 1 (shiva.rudra.40.1)
nārada uvāca | brahman vidhe mahābhāga śivabhakta varaprabho | śrāvitaṁ caritaṁ śambhoradbhutaṁ maṅgalāyanam
Narada said: O Brahma, O Creator, greatly fortunate one, devoted to Shiva, best of the excellent, I have heard this wondrous, auspicious tale of Shambhu.
Verse 2 (shiva.rudra.40.2)
tataḥ kimabhavattāta kathyatāṁ śaśimaulinaḥ | satyāśca caritaṁ divyaṁ sarvāghaughavināśanam
Dear one, what happened after that? Tell me the divine tale of moon-crested Shiva and Sati, the destroyer of all the multitude of sins.
Verse 3 (shiva.rudra.40.3)
brahmovāca | nivṛtte śaṅkare cāsmadvadhādbhaktānukampini | abhavannirbhayāḥ sarve sukhinaḥ suprasannakāḥ
Brahma said: When Shankara, compassionate to his devotees, desisted from slaying me, all became fearless, joyful, and well pleased.
Verse 4 (shiva.rudra.40.4)
nataskandhāḥ sāñjalayaḥ praṇemurnikhilāśca te | tuṣṭuvuḥ śaṅkaraṁ bhaktyā cakrurjayaravaṁ mudā
All of them, with bowed necks and joined hands, bowed down; they praised Shankara with devotion and, with joy, raised a shout of victory.
Verse 5 (shiva.rudra.40.5)
etasminneva kāle'haṁ prasanno nirbhayo mune | astavaṁ śaṅkaraṁ bhaktyā vividhaiśca śubhastavaiḥ
O sage, at that very time, I too, pleased and fearless, praised Shankara with devotion, using various auspicious hymns.
Verse 6 (shiva.rudra.40.6)
tatastuṣṭamanāḥ śambhurbahulīlākaraḥ prabhuḥ | mune māṁ samuvācedaṁ sarveṣāṁ śṛṇvatāṁ tadā
Then Shambhu, his mind satisfied, the Lord of manifold divine play, O sage, spoke this to me in the hearing of all.
Verse 7 (shiva.rudra.40.7)
rudra uvāca | brahman tāta prasanno'haṁ nirbhayastvaṁ bhavādhunā | svaśīrṣaṁ spṛśa hastena madājñāṁ kurvasaṁśayam
Rudra said: O Brahma, dear one, I am pleased; be now free from fear. Touch your own head with your own hand — carry out my command without doubt.
Verse 8 (shiva.rudra.40.8)
brahmovāca | ityākarṇya vacaḥ śambhorbahulīlākṛtaḥ prabhoḥ | spṛśan svaṁ kaṁ tathā bhūtvā prāṇamaṁ vṛṣabhadhvajam
Brahma said: Having heard this word of Shambhu, the Lord of manifold play, touching my own head and thus becoming so transformed, I bowed to the bull-bannered one.
Verse 9 (shiva.rudra.40.9)
yāvadevamahaṁ svaṁ kaṁ spṛśāmi nijapāṇinā | tāvattatra sthitaṁ sadyastadrūpavṛṣavāhanam
As soon as I, in this way, touched my own head with my own hand, at once there stood in that very place a form of that same kind, mounted upon a bull.
Verse 10 (shiva.rudra.40.10)
tato lajjāparītāṅgaḥ sthitaścāhamadhomukhaḥ | indrādyairamaraiḥ sarvaiḥ sudṛṣṭaḥ sarvataḥ sthitaiḥ
Then, my body overcome with shame, I stood with my face bowed down, closely watched by Indra and all the other gods standing around on every side.
Verse 11 (shiva.rudra.40.11)
athāhaṁ lajjayāviṣṭaḥ praṇipatya maheśvaram | prāvocaṁ saṁstutiṁ kṛtvā kṣamyatāṁ kṣamyatāmiti
Then, overcome with shame, prostrating before Maheshvara, having offered praise, I said: 'Forgive me, forgive me.'
Verse 12 (shiva.rudra.40.12)
asya pāpasya śuddhyarthaṁ prāyaścittaṁ vada prabho | nigrahaṁ ca tathā nyāyaṁ yena pāpaṁ prayātu me
O Lord, for the purification of this sin, tell me the atonement, and also the fitting penalty, by which this sin of mine may depart.
Verse 13 (shiva.rudra.40.13)
ityuktastu mayā śambhuruvāca praṇataṁ hi mām | suprasannataro bhūtvā sarveśo bhaktavatsalaḥ
Thus addressed by me, Shambhu, the Lord of all, ever fond of his devotees, becoming exceedingly gracious, spoke to me as I lay prostrate.
Verse 14 (shiva.rudra.40.14)
śambhuruvāca | anenaiva svarūpeṇa madadhiṣṭhitakena hi | tapaḥ kuru prasannātmā madārādhanatatparaḥ
Shambhu said: In this very form, presided over by me, perform austerity, your soul at peace, intent upon my worship.
Verse 15 (shiva.rudra.40.15)
khyātiṁ yāsyasi sarvatra nāmnā rudraśiraḥ kṣitau | sādhakaḥ sarvakṛtyānāṁ tejobhājāṁ dvijanmanām
You shall attain fame everywhere on earth by the name 'Rudrashiras', the accomplisher of all tasks for the radiant twice-born.
Verse 16 (shiva.rudra.40.16)
manuṣyāṇāmidaṁ kṛtyaṁ yasmādvīryaṁ tvayādhunā | tasmāttvaṁ mānuṣo bhūtvā vicariṣyasi bhūtale
Since you have now performed this deed characteristic of human beings, therefore you shall take on a human nature and wander upon the earth.
Verse 17 (shiva.rudra.40.17)
yastvāṁ cānena rūpeṇa dṛṣṭvā kau vicariṣyati | kimetad brahmaṇo mūrdhni vadanniti purāntakaḥ
Whoever, seeing you in this form, shall wonder, 'What is this upon Brahma's head?' — thus spoke the Destroyer of the [triple] city.
Verse 18 (shiva.rudra.40.18)
tataste ceṣṭitaṁ sarvaṁ kautukācchroṣyatīti yaḥ | paradārakṛtāttyāgānmuktiṁ sadyaḥ sa yāsyati
Then, whoever hears of this entire event out of curiosity shall, through the renunciation this brings about of desire for another's wife, swiftly attain liberation.
Verse 19 (shiva.rudra.40.19)
yathā yathā janaścaitatkṛtyaṁ te kīrtayiṣyati | tathā tathā viśuddhiste pāpasyāsya bhaviṣyati
In whatever measure people shall proclaim this deed of yours, in that same measure the purification of this sin of yours shall come about.
Verse 20 (shiva.rudra.40.20)
etadeva hi te brahman prāyaścittaṁ mayeritam | janahāsyakaraṁ loke tava garhākaraṁ param
This very thing, O Brahma, is the atonement I have prescribed for you — a cause of laughter for people in this world, yet the supreme means of removing your disgrace.
Verse 21 (shiva.rudra.40.21)
etacca tava vīryaṁ hi patitaṁ vedimadhyagam | kāmārtasya mayā dṛṣṭaṁ naitaddhāryaṁ bhaviṣyati
And this seed of yours, fallen in the midst of the altar, seen by me while you were afflicted with desire — this shall not be allowed to remain as it is.
Verse 22 (shiva.rudra.40.22)
caturbindumitaṁ retaḥ patitaṁ yatkṣitau tava | tanmitāstoyadā vyomni bhaveyuḥ pralayaṅkarāḥ
The measure of your seed that fell upon the earth, four drops, an equal number of world-dissolving clouds shall arise in the sky.
Verse 23 (shiva.rudra.40.23)
etasminnantare tatra devarṣīṇāṁ puro drutam | tadretasaḥ samabhavaṁstanmitāśca balāhakāḥ
Meanwhile, there, before the divine sages, from that very seed, clouds equal in number arose swiftly.
Verse 24 (shiva.rudra.40.24)
saṁvartakastathāvartaḥ puṣkaro droṇa eva ca | ete caturvidhāstāta mahāmeghā layaṅkarāḥ
Dear one, Samvartaka, Avarta, Pushkara, and Drona — these four kinds are the great, world-dissolving clouds.
Verse 25 (shiva.rudra.40.25)
garjantaścātha muñcantastoyānīṣacchivecchayā | phelurvyomni muniśreṣṭha toyadāste kadāravāḥ
O best of sages, thundering and releasing a little water by Shiva's own will, those harsh-sounding clouds spread across the sky.
Verse 26 (shiva.rudra.40.26)
taistu sañchādite vyomni sugarjadbhiśca śaṅkaraḥ | praśān dākṣāyaṇī devī bhṛśaṁ śānto'bhavad drutam
With the sky covered by those loudly thundering clouds, Shankara swiftly became greatly pacified, and the Goddess, daughter of Daksha, too grew calm.
Verse 27 (shiva.rudra.40.27)
atha cāhaṁ vītabhayaḥ śaṅkarasyājñayā tadā | śeṣaṁ vaivāhikaṁ karma samāptimanayaṁ mune
O sage, then I, freed from fear, at Shankara's command, brought the remaining marriage rites to completion.
Verse 28 (shiva.rudra.40.28)
papāta puṣpavṛṣṭiśca śivāśivaśiraskayoḥ | sarvatra ca muniśreṣṭha mudā devagaṇojjhitā
O best of sages, a shower of flowers, joyfully released by the hosts of gods, fell everywhere upon the heads of both Shiva and Shakti.
Verse 29 (shiva.rudra.40.29)
vādyamāneṣu vādyeṣu gāyamāneṣu teṣu ca | paṭhatsu vipravargeṣu vedān bhaktyānviteṣu ca
While the instruments were being played, songs were being sung, and groups of brahmins, filled with devotion, recited the Vedas,
Verse 30 (shiva.rudra.40.30)
rambhādiṣu purandhrīṣu nṛtyamānāsu sādaram | mahotsavo mahānāsīddevapatnīṣu nārada
O Narada, while Rambha and the other celestial women danced with reverence, there was a great festival among the wives of the gods.
Verse 31 (shiva.rudra.40.31)
atha karmavitāneśaḥ prasannaḥ parameśvaraḥ | prāha māṁ prāñjaliṁ prītyā laukikīṁ gatimāśritaḥ
Then the Supreme Lord, presiding over that entire rite, pleased, resorting to worldly custom, spoke lovingly to me, who stood with joined hands.
Verse 32 (shiva.rudra.40.32)
īśvara uvāca | he brahman sukṛtaṁ karma sarvaṁ vaivāhikaṁ ca yat | prasanno'smi tvamācāryo dadyāṁ te dakṣiṇāṁ ca kām
Ishvara said: O Brahma, the entire marriage rite has been well accomplished; I am pleased. You are my officiant — what priestly gift shall I give you?
Verse 33 (shiva.rudra.40.33)
yācasva tāṁ surajyeṣṭha yadyapi syātsudurlabhā | brūhi śīghraṁ mahābhāga nādeyaṁ vidyate mama
O eldest of the gods, ask for it, even should it be exceedingly hard to obtain; O greatly fortunate one, speak quickly — there is nothing I cannot give.
Verse 34 (shiva.rudra.40.34)
brahmovāca | ityākarṇya vacaḥ so'haṁ śaṅkarasya kṛtāñjaliḥ | mune'vocaṁ vinītātmā praṇamyeśaṁ muhurmuhuḥ
Brahma said: O sage, having heard these words, I, with joined hands to Shankara, humble of heart, bowing to the Lord again and again, spoke thus.
Verse 35 (shiva.rudra.40.35)
yadi prasanno deveśa varayogyo'smyahaṁ yadi | tatkuru tvaṁ maheśāna suprītyā yadvadāmyaham
O Lord of gods, if you are pleased, and if I am worthy of a boon, then, O Maheshana, do with love what I now say.
Verse 36 (shiva.rudra.40.36)
anenaiva tu rūpeṇa vedyāmasyāṁ maheśvara | tvayā stheyaṁ sadaivātra nṛṇāṁ pāpaviśuddhaye
O Maheshvara, in this very form, upon this very altar, remain forever here, for the purification of men's sins.
Verse 37 (shiva.rudra.40.37)
yenāsya sannidhau kṛtvā svāśramaṁ śaśiśekhara | tapaḥ kuryāṁ vināśāya svapāpasyāsya śaṅkara
So that, having made my own hermitage in its vicinity, O moon-crested one, I may perform austerity for the destruction of this sin of mine, O Shankara.
Verse 38 (shiva.rudra.40.38)
caitraśuklatrayodaśyāṁ nakṣatre bhagadaivate | sūryavāre ca yo bhaktyā vīkṣeta bhuvi mānavaḥ
Whatever human being on earth shall, with devotion, behold this on the bright thirteenth of Chaitra, under the constellation ruled by Bhaga, on a Sunday -
Verse 39 (shiva.rudra.40.39)
tadaiva tasya pāpāni prayāntu hara saṅkṣayam | vardhate vipulaṁ puṇyaṁ rogā naśyantu sarvaśaḥ
- O Hara, may his sins be utterly destroyed at that very moment; may abundant merit increase, and may all diseases be wholly destroyed.
Verse 40 (shiva.rudra.40.40)
yā nārī durbhagā vandhyā kāṇā rūpavivarjitā | sāpi tvaddarśanādeva nirdoṣā sambhaved dhruvam
Whatever woman is unfortunate, barren, one-eyed, or devoid of beauty — she too, merely by the sight of you, shall surely become free from all such defects.
Verse 41 (shiva.rudra.40.41)
brahmovāca | ityākarṇya vaco me hi svātmasarvasukhāvaham | tathāstviti śivaḥ prāha suprasannena cetasā
Brahma said: Having heard these words of mine, which brought about happiness for his own self as well, Shiva, with a greatly pleased heart, said, 'So be it.'
Verse 42 (shiva.rudra.40.42)
śiva uvāca | hitāya sarvalokasya vedyāṁ tasyāṁ vyavasthitaḥ | sthāsyāmi sahitaḥ patnyā satyā tvadvacanādvidhe
Shiva said: O Creator, for the welfare of all the world, at your word, established upon this very altar, I shall remain here together with my wife Sati.
Verse 43 (shiva.rudra.40.43)
brahmovāca | ityuktvā bhagavāṁstatra sabhāryo vṛṣabhadhvajaḥ | uvāca vedimadhyastho mūrtiṁ kṛtvāṁśarūpiṇīm
Brahma said: Having said this, the Blessed bull-bannered one, there with his wife, standing in the midst of the altar, established a form that was a partial manifestation of himself.
Verse 44 (shiva.rudra.40.44)
tato dakṣaṁ samāmantrya śaṅkaraḥ parameśvaraḥ | patnyā satyā gantumanā abhūtsvajanavatsalaḥ
Then, taking leave of Daksha, Shankara, the Supreme Lord, ever fond of his own devotees, became intent on departing together with his wife Sati.
Verse 45 (shiva.rudra.40.45)
etasminnantare dakṣo vinayāvanataḥ sudhīḥ | sāñjalirnatakaḥ prītyā tuṣṭāva vṛṣabhadhvajam
Meanwhile, wise Daksha, bowed low in humility, with joined hands, bowing with love, began to praise the bull-bannered one.
Verse 46 (shiva.rudra.40.46)
viṣṇvādayaḥ surāḥ sarve munayaśca gaṇāstadā | natvā saṁstūya vividhaṁ cakrurjayaravaṁ mudā
Vishnu and all the other gods, the sages, and the ganas too then, bowing and praising him in various ways, joyfully raised a shout of victory.
Verse 47 (shiva.rudra.40.47)
āropya vṛṣabhe śambhuḥ satīṁ dakṣājñayā mudā | jagāma himavatprasthaṁ vṛṣabhasthaḥ svayaṁ prabhuḥ
Having, by Daksha's leave, joyfully mounted Sati upon the bull, and himself mounted upon the bull, the Lord Shambhu set out for the slope of the Himalaya.
Verse 48 (shiva.rudra.40.48)
atha sā śaṅkarābhyāśe sudatī cāruhāsinī | vireje vṛṣabhasthā vai candrānte kālikā yathā
Then she, of lovely teeth and charming smile, seated upon the bull near Shankara, shone forth like Kalika beside the moon.
Verse 49 (shiva.rudra.40.49)
viṣṇvādayaḥ surāḥ sarve marīcyādyāstatharṣayaḥ | dakṣo'pi mohitaścāsīttathānye niścalā janāḥ
Vishnu and all the gods, Marichi and the other sages, and Daksha too, along with all the other steadfast people standing there, became entranced.
Verse 50 (shiva.rudra.40.50)
kecidvādyānvādayanto gāyantaḥ susvaraṁ pare | śivaṁ śivayaśaḥ śuddhamanujagmuḥ śivaṁ mudā
Some, playing instruments, others singing sweetly, followed with joy after Shiva's pure fame and Shiva himself.
Verse 51 (shiva.rudra.40.51)
madhyamārgādvisṛṣṭo hi dakṣaḥ prītyātha śambhunā | svadhāma prāpa sagaṇaḥ śambhuḥ premasamākulaḥ
Taking leave partway along the road, given lovingly by Shambhu, Daksha returned to his own abode, and Shambhu, love-filled, went on together with his retinue.
Verse 52 (shiva.rudra.40.52)
visṛṣṭā api viṣṇvādyāḥ śambhunā punareva te | anujagmuḥ śivaṁ bhaktyā surāḥ paramayā mudā
Even though given leave, Vishnu and the other gods again followed after Shiva with devotion and the greatest joy.
Verse 53 (shiva.rudra.40.53)
taiḥ sarvaiḥ sagaṇaiḥ śambhuḥ satyā ca svastriyā yutaḥ | prāpa svaṁ dhāma saṁhṛṣṭo himavad giriśobhitam
Together with all those attendants and his own wife Sati, joyful Shambhu reached his own abode, adorned by the Himalayan mountain.
Verse 54 (shiva.rudra.40.54)
tatra gatvākhilāndevānmunīnapi parāṁstathā | mudā visarjayāmāsa bahu sammānya sādaram
Having gone there, he joyfully dismissed all the gods and the other great sages, honoring them greatly and with due respect.
Verse 55 (shiva.rudra.40.55)
śambhumābhāṣya te sarve viṣṇvādyā muditānanāḥ | svaṁ svaṁ dhāma yayurnatvā stutvā ca munayaḥ surāḥ
All of them — Vishnu and the rest, their faces filled with delight — having addressed Shambhu, and having bowed and praised him, the sages and gods went each to his own abode.
Verse 56 (shiva.rudra.40.56)
śivo'pi mudito'tyarthaṁ svapatnyā dakṣakanyayā | himavatprasthasaṁstho hi vijahāra bhavānugaḥ
Shiva too, exceedingly delighted with his own wife, the daughter of Daksha, residing on the slope of the Himalaya, sported there in a mood of auspicious grace.
Verse 57 (shiva.rudra.40.57)
tataḥ sa śaṅkaraḥ satyā sagaṇaḥ sūtikṛnmune | prāpa svaṁ dhāma saṁhṛṣṭaḥ kailāsaṁ parvatottamam
O sage, then Shankara, the very source of creation, together with Sati and his retinue, joyfully reached his own abode, Kailasa, the foremost of mountains.
Verse 58 (shiva.rudra.40.58)
