Rudra Samhita · Chapter 49
Sati's Speech
Verse 1 (shiva.rudra.49.1)
brahmovāca | dākṣāyaṇī gatā tatra yatra yajño mahāprabhaḥ | surāsuramunīndrādikutūhalasamanvitaḥ
Brahma said: "Daksha's daughter went there, where the mighty sacrifice was underway, filled with the eager curiosity of gods, demons, and great sages."
Verse 2 (shiva.rudra.49.2)
svapiturbhavanaṁ tatra nānāścaryasamanvitam | dadarśa suprabhaṁ cāru surarṣigaṇasaṁyutam
There she saw her father's dwelling, full of many wonders, radiant and beautiful, thronged with hosts of gods and sages.
Verse 3 (shiva.rudra.49.3)
dvāri sthitā tadā devī hyavaruhya nijāsanāt | nandino'bhyantaraṁ śīghramekaivāgacchadadhvaram
The goddess stood at the gate, having quickly descended from her own mount; alone, she swiftly entered the interior of the sacrificial ground.
Verse 4 (shiva.rudra.49.4)
āgatāṁ ca satīṁ dṛṣṭvāsiknī mātā yaśasvinī | akarodādaraṁ tasyā bhaginyaśca yathocitam
Seeing Sati arrive, her illustrious mother Asikni, and her sisters too, honored her as was fitting.
Verse 5 (shiva.rudra.49.5)
nākarodādaraṁ dakṣo dṛṣṭvā tāmapi kiñcana | nānyo'pi tadbhayāttatra śivamāyāvimohitaḥ
But Daksha, seeing her, showed her no honor at all; and out of fear of him, and deluded besides by Shiva's own māyā, no one else there did either.
Verse 6 (shiva.rudra.49.6)
atha sā mātaraṁ devī pitaraṁ ca satī mune | anamadvismitātyantaṁ sarvalokaparābhavāt
Then, O sage, the goddess Sati bowed to her mother and father, greatly astonished at this affront before the whole assembly.
Verse 7 (shiva.rudra.49.7)
bhāgānapaśyaddevānāṁ haryādīnāṁ tadadhvare | na śambhubhāgamakarot krodhaṁ durviṣahaṁ satī
She saw the offering-portions set aside for Indra and the other gods at that sacrifice, but no portion for Shambhu — and Sati's fury became unbearable.
Verse 8 (shiva.rudra.49.8)
tadā dakṣaṁ dahantīva ruṣā pūrṇā satī bhṛśam | krūradṛṣṭyā vilokyaiva sarvānapyapamānitā
Then Sati, as though burning Daksha with her wrath, filled with fierce anger, looked upon everyone there with a fierce glance, feeling utterly insulted.
Verse 9 (shiva.rudra.49.9)
satyuvāca | anāhūtastvayā kasmācchambhuḥ paramaśobhanaḥ | yena pūtamidaṁ viśvaṁ samagraṁ sacarācaram
Sati said: "Why have you not invited the supremely resplendent Shambhu — he by whom this entire universe, moving and unmoving, is made pure?"
Verse 10 (shiva.rudra.49.10)
yajño yajñavidāṁ śreṣṭho yajñāṅgo yajñadakṣiṇaḥ | yajñakartā ca yaḥ śambhustaṁ vinā ca kathaṁ makhaḥ
Shambhu himself is the sacrifice — the foremost among those who know it, its very limb, its sacrificial fee, and its performer. How then can this rite proceed without him?
Verse 11 (shiva.rudra.49.11)
yasya smaraṇamātreṇa sarvaṁ pūtaṁ bhavatyaho | vinā tena kṛtaṁ sarvamapavitraṁ bhaviṣyati
Ah, by the mere remembrance of whom everything becomes pure — without him, everything done here will remain impure.
Verse 12 (shiva.rudra.49.12)
dravyamantrādikaṁ sarvaṁ havyaṁ kavyaṁ ca yanmayam | śambhunā hi vinā tena kathaṁ yajñaḥ pravartitaḥ
All the materials, mantras, and offerings to gods and ancestors — all of it is his very form. How then has this sacrifice been undertaken without Shambhu?
Verse 13 (shiva.rudra.49.13)
kiṁ śivaṁ surasāmānyaṁ matvākārṣīranādaram | bhraṣṭabuddhirbhavānadya jāto'si janakādhama
Have you thought Shiva to be some ordinary god, that you have shown him disrespect? Today, O basest of fathers, you have become one of ruined understanding.
Verse 14 (shiva.rudra.49.14)
viṣṇubrahmādayo devā yaṁ saṁsevya maheśvaram | prāptāḥ svapadavīṁ sarve taṁ na jānāsi re haram
Vishnu, Brahma, and the other gods attained their own high stations only by serving that great Lord. Yet him, O Hara, you do not even recognize.
Verse 15 (shiva.rudra.49.15)
ete kathaṁ samāyātā viṣṇubrahmādayaḥ surāḥ | tava yajñe vinā śambhuṁ svaprabhuṁ munayastathā
How have these gods, Vishnu, Brahma and the rest, and the sages too, come to your sacrifice, leaving Shambhu, their own true Lord, behind?
Verse 16 (shiva.rudra.49.16)
brahmovāca | ityuktvā parameśānī viṣṇvādīnsakalān prati | pṛthakpṛthagavocatsā bhartsayantī bhavātmikā
Brahma said: "Having said this, the supreme Goddess turned to Vishnu and all the others and rebuked each of them separately, one by one."
Verse 17 (shiva.rudra.49.17)
satyuvāca | he viṣṇo tvaṁ mahādevaṁ kiṁ na jānāsi tattvataḥ | saguṇaṁ nirguṇaṁ cāpi śrutayo yaṁ vadanti ha
Sati said: "O Vishnu, do you truly not know the great God, whom the scriptures declare to be both with qualities and beyond qualities?"
Verse 18 (shiva.rudra.49.18)
yadyapi tvāṁ karaṁ dattvā bahuvāraṁ maheśvaraḥ | aśikṣayatpurā śālvapramukhākṛtibhirhare
Even though the great Lord once, in the guise of Shalva and other such forms, took you by the hand many times and taught you a lesson —
Verse 19 (shiva.rudra.49.19)
— even so, O foolish one, that knowledge never entered your mind; you have come to this sacrifice of Daksha seeking only your own share, forsaking Shiva, your own Master.
Verse 20 (shiva.rudra.49.20)
purā pañcamukho bhūtvā garvito'si sadāśivam | kṛtaścaturmukhastena vismṛto'si tadadbhutam
Once, having become five-headed, you grew arrogant even before Sadashiva himself; he made you four-headed instead — and even that wondrous event you have forgotten.
Verse 21 (shiva.rudra.49.21)
indra tvaṁ kiṁ na jānāsi mahādevasya vikramam | bhasmīkṛtaḥ paviste hi hareṇa krūrakarmaṇā
O Indra, do you not know the might of the great God? Your very thunderbolt was reduced to ashes by Hara's fierce act.
Verse 22 (shiva.rudra.49.22)
he surāḥ kinna jānītha mahādevasya vikramam | atre vasiṣṭha munayo yuṣmābhiḥ kiṁ kṛtaṁ tviha
O gods, do you not know the might of the great God? And you sages, beginning with Atri and Vasishtha, what indeed have you done here?
Verse 23 (shiva.rudra.49.23)
bhikṣāṭanaṁ ca kṛtavān purā dāruvane vibhuḥ | śapto yadbhikṣuko rudro bhavadbhirmunibhistadā
Once the all-pervading Lord wandered as a mendicant in the Deodar forest, and you sages then cursed Rudra, taking him for a mere beggar.
Verse 24 (shiva.rudra.49.24)
śaptenāpi ca rudreṇa yatkṛtaṁ vismṛtaṁ katham | talliṅgenākhilaṁ dagdhaṁ bhuvanaṁ sacarācaram
How have you forgotten what Rudra did even after being cursed — how, through that very linga, the whole moving and unmoving world was set ablaze?
Verse 25 (shiva.rudra.49.25)
sarve mūḍhāśca sañjātā viṣṇubrahmādayaḥ surāḥ | munayo'nye vinā śambhumāgatā yadihādhvare
All of you have become utterly deluded — Vishnu, Brahma, and the other gods, and the rest of the sages too — that you have come to this sacrifice, leaving Shambhu aside.
Verse 26 (shiva.rudra.49.26)
sarve vedāśca sambhūtā sāṅgāḥ śāstrāṇi vāgyataḥ | yo'sau vedāntagaḥ śambhuḥ kaiścijjñātuṁ na pāryate
All the Vedas with their limbs, and all the scriptures, arose from speech itself — yet that Shambhu who dwells at the end of the Vedas can be known by scarcely anyone.
Verse 27 (shiva.rudra.49.27)
brahmovāca | ityanekavidhā vāṇīragadajjagadambikā | kopānvitā satī tatra hṛdayena vidūyatā
Brahma said: "Speaking these many words, the Mother of the Universe, filled with anger, her heart burning within her —"
Verse 28 (shiva.rudra.49.28)
viṣṇvādayo'khilā devā munayo ye ca tadvacaḥ | maunībhūtāstadākarṇya bhayavyākulamānasāḥ
— all the gods beginning with Vishnu, and the sages too, hearing those words, fell silent, their minds troubled with fear.
Verse 29 (shiva.rudra.49.29)
atha dakṣaḥ samākarṇya svaputryāstādṛśaṁ vacaḥ | vilokya krūradṛṣṭyā tāṁ satīṁ kruddho'bravīdvacaḥ
Then Daksha, hearing such words from his own daughter, looked upon Sati with a fierce glance and, enraged, spoke these words.
Verse 30 (shiva.rudra.49.30)
dakṣa uvāca | tava kiṁ bahunoktena kāryaṁ nāstīha sāmpratam | gaccha vā tiṣṭha vā bhadre kasmāttvaṁ hi samāgatā
Daksha said: "What use is it, speaking so much? There is nothing to be gained by it now. Go or stay, good lady — but why indeed have you come here?"
Verse 31 (shiva.rudra.49.31)
amaṅgalastu te bhartā śivo'sau gamyate budhaiḥ | akulīno vedabāhyo bhūtapretapiśācarāṭ
That husband of yours, Shiva, is regarded by the wise as inauspicious — of no noble lineage, outside the Vedas, king of ghosts, spirits, and demons.
Verse 32 (shiva.rudra.49.32)
tasmānnāhvāyito rudro yajñārthaṁ sukuveṣabhṛt | devarṣisaṁsadi mayā jñātvā putri vipaścitā
That is why, O daughter, knowing this well as a wise man before the assembly of gods and sages, I did not invite Rudra to this sacrifice.
Verse 33 (shiva.rudra.49.33)
vidhinā preritena tvaṁ dattā mandena pāpinā | rudrāyāviditārthāya coddhatāya durātmane
Impelled by fate, I, foolish and sinful, gave you in marriage to that Rudra of unknown worth, arrogant and evil-natured.
Verse 34 (shiva.rudra.49.34)
tasmātkopaṁ parityajya svasthā bhava śucismite | yadyāgatāsi yajñe'smin dāyaṁ gṛhṇīṣva cātmanā
So, fair-smiling one, set aside your anger and compose yourself. If you have indeed come to this sacrifice, then take your own share.
Verse 35 (shiva.rudra.49.35)
brahmovāca | dakṣeṇokteti sā putrī satī trailokyapūjitā | nindāyuktaṁ svapitaraṁ dṛṣṭvāsīd ruṣitā bhṛśam
Brahma said: "Thus addressed by Daksha, that daughter Sati, worshipped by the three worlds, seeing her own father given over to such slander, became greatly enraged."
Verse 36 (shiva.rudra.49.36)
acintayattadā seti kathaṁ yāsyāmi śaṅkaram | śaṅkaraṁ draṣṭukāmāhaṁ pṛṣṭā vakṣye kimuttaram
She thought: "How shall I now go to Shankara? I who long to see Shankara — if he asks, what answer shall I give?"
Verse 37 (shiva.rudra.49.37)
atha provāca pitaraṁ dakṣaṁ taṁ duṣṭamānasam | niḥśvasantī ruṣāviṣṭā sā satī trijagatprasūḥ
Then Sati, mother of the three worlds, sighing heavily and possessed by fury, spoke to her evil-minded father Daksha.
Verse 38 (shiva.rudra.49.38)
satyuvāca | yo nindati mahādevaṁ nindyamānaṁ śṛṇoti vā | tāvubhau narakaṁ yātau yāvaccandradivākarau
Sati said: "Whoever reviles the great God, or listens to him being reviled — both of them go to hell for as long as the sun and moon endure."
Verse 39 (shiva.rudra.49.39)
tasmāttyakṣyāmyahaṁ dehaṁ pravekṣyāmi hutāśanam | kiṁ jīvitena me tāta śṛṇvantyānādaraṁ prabhoḥ
"Therefore I shall give up this body; I shall enter the fire. What use, O father, is my life to me, when I must hear my own Lord so dishonored?"
Verse 40 (shiva.rudra.49.40)
yadi śaktaḥ svayaṁ śambhornindakasya viśeṣataḥ | chindyāt prasahya rasanāṁ tadā śuddhyenna saṁśayaḥ
"If one is able, one should forcibly cut out the very tongue of Shambhu's reviler — only then, without doubt, is one purified."
Verse 41 (shiva.rudra.49.41)
yadyaśakto janastatra nirayātsupidhāya vai | karṇau dhīmān tataḥ śuddhyed vadantīdaṁ budhā varāḥ
"If one is unable to do so, then the wise should firmly cover both ears and depart from that place — so declare the learned; only then is one purified."
Verse 42 (shiva.rudra.49.42)
brahmovāca | itthamuktvā dharmanītiṁ paścāttāpamavāpa sā | asmaracchāṅkaraṁ vākyaṁ dūyamānena cetasā
Brahma said: "Having thus declared this rule of righteousness, she fell into remorse, and with an anguished heart she recalled Shankara's own words."
Verse 43 (shiva.rudra.49.43)
tataḥ saṅkruddhya sā dakṣaṁ niḥśaṅkaṁ prāha tānapi | sarvānviṣṇvādikāndevānmunīnapi satī dhruvam
Then, growing fiercely angry, Sati spoke fearlessly and resolutely to Daksha, and to all those gods beginning with Vishnu, and to the sages as well.
Verse 44 (shiva.rudra.49.44)
satyuvāca | tāta tvaṁ nindakaḥ śambhoḥ paścāttāpaṁ gamiṣyasi | iha bhuktvā mahāduḥkhamante yāsyasi yātanām
Sati said: "Father, you who revile Shambhu shall come to bitter regret. Having suffered great misery here, in the end you shall go to torment."
Verse 45 (shiva.rudra.49.45)
yasya loke'priyo nāsti priyaścaiva parātmanaḥ | tasminnavaire śarve'smin tvāṁ vinā kaḥ pratīpakaḥ
"He who has no enemy in all the world, dear to everyone as the Supreme Self — toward that hate-free Sharva, who besides you could be so hostile?"
Verse 46 (shiva.rudra.49.46)
mahadvinindā nāścaryaṁ sarvadāsatsu serṣyakam | mahadaṅghrirajodhvastatamaḥsu naiva śobhanā
"It is no wonder that the wicked, ever envious, revile the great — the dust of the great one's feet, which destroys darkness, brings them no delight."
Verse 47 (shiva.rudra.49.47)
śiveti dvyakṣaraṁ yasya nṛṇāṁ nāma gireritam | sakṛtprasaṅgātsakalamaghamāśu vihanti tat
"Whose very name, 'Shiva' — those two syllables — when uttered even once by human lips, at once destroys every sin."
Verse 48 (shiva.rudra.49.48)
pavitrakīrtimamalaṁ bhavān dveṣṭi śivetaraḥ | alaṅghyaśāsanaṁ śambhumaho sarveśvaraṁ khalaḥ
"Yet you, being inauspicious yourself, hate that one of pure and stainless fame — ah, you villain, hating Shambhu, the all-ruling Lord whose command none may transgress!"
Verse 49 (shiva.rudra.49.49)
yatpādapadmaṁ mahatāṁ mano'lisuniṣevitam | sarvārthadaṁ brahmarasaiḥ sarvārthibhirathādarāt
"Whose lotus feet are ever served by the bee-like minds of the great, granting every desire, worshipped reverently with the nectar of brahman by all who seek their ends —"
Verse 50 (shiva.rudra.49.50)
yadvarṣatyarthinaḥ śīghraṁ lokasya śiva ādarāt | bhavān druhyati mūrkhatvāt tasmai cāśeṣabandhave
"— he who swiftly grants the wishes of petitioners, out of his kindness for the whole world's welfare — that very Shiva, kinsman of all, you, out of sheer folly, do violence to."
Verse 51 (shiva.rudra.49.51)
kiṁvā śivākhyamaśivaṁ tvadanye na vidurbudhāḥ | brahmādayastaṁ munayaḥ sanakādyāstathāpare
"Or is it that no one else — no wise one besides you, not even Brahma and the sages beginning with Sanaka — knows that the name 'Shiva' is inauspicious?"
Verse 52 (shiva.rudra.49.52)
avakīrya jaṭā bhūtaiḥ śmaśāne sa kapāladhṛk | tanmālyabhasma vā jñātvā prītyāvasadudāradhīḥ
"He wanders, his matted locks disheveled, amid the spirits of the cremation-ground, skull in hand — yet the noble-minded, knowing that very ash to be his true ornament, dwell there in loving contentment."
Verse 53 (shiva.rudra.49.53)
ye mūrddhabhirdadhati taccaraṇotsṛṣṭamādarāt | nirmālyaṁ munayo devāḥ sa śivaḥ parameśvaraḥ
"Those sages and gods who reverently bear upon their heads the offerings cast down from his feet — he is Shiva, the Supreme Lord."
Verse 54 (shiva.rudra.49.54)
pravṛttaṁ ca nivṛttaṁ ca dvividhaṁ karma coditam | vede vivicya vṛttaṁ ca tadvicāryaṁ manīṣibhiḥ
"Action is enjoined in the Veda as twofold — the path of engagement and the path of renunciation; the wise, having discerned this and its practice, should reflect upon it."
Verse 55 (shiva.rudra.49.55)
virodhiyaugapadyaikakartṛke ca tathā dvayam | parabrahmaṇi śambhau tu karmarcchanti na kiñcana
"These two, mutually contrary yet arising together from a single agent — but in the Supreme Brahman, in Shambhu, no such taint of action can ever apply."
Verse 56 (shiva.rudra.49.56)
mā vaḥ padavyaḥ sma pitaḥ yā asmadāsthitāḥ sadā | yajñaśālāsu vo dhūmravartmabhuktojjhitāḥ param
"Never, O father, may you tread the paths I have always followed — in your sacrificial halls the gods shall henceforth be left to be sustained by nothing but the drifting smoke."
Verse 57 (shiva.rudra.49.57)
