The Birth of Virabhadra and Shiva's Teaching

Verse 1 (shiva.rudra.52.1)

नारद उवाच । श्रुत्वा व्योमगिरं दक्षः किमकार्षीत्तदाबुधः । अन्ये च कृतवन्तः किं ततश्च किमभूद् वद

nārada uvāca | śrutvā vyomagiraṁ dakṣaḥ kimakārṣīttadābudhaḥ | anye ca kṛtavantaḥ kiṁ tataśca kimabhūd vada

Narada said: "Hearing that voice from the sky, what then did the learned Daksha do? And what did the others do — tell me, what happened next?"

Verse 2 (shiva.rudra.52.2)

पराजिताः शिवगणा भृगुमन्त्रबलेन वै । किमकार्षुः कुत्र गतास्तत्त्वं वद महामते

parājitāḥ śivagaṇā bhṛgumantrabalena vai | kimakārṣuḥ kutra gatāstattvaṁ vada mahāmate

"What did Shiva's ganas, defeated by the power of Bhrigu's mantra, then do — where did they go? Tell me the truth of it, O great-minded one."

Verse 3 (shiva.rudra.52.3)

ब्रह्मोवाच । श्रुत्वा व्योमगिरं सर्वे विस्मिताश्च सुरादयः । नावोचत्किञ्चिदपि ते तिष्ठन्तस्तु विमोहिताः

brahmovāca | śrutvā vyomagiraṁ sarve vismitāśca surādayaḥ | nāvocatkiñcidapi te tiṣṭhantastu vimohitāḥ

Brahma said: "Hearing that voice from the sky, the gods and all the others were struck with wonder; unable to say anything at all, they stood there as though dazed."

Verse 4 (shiva.rudra.52.4)

पलायमाना ये वीरा भृगुमन्त्रबलेन ते । अवशिष्टाः शिवगणाः शिवं शरणमाययुः

palāyamānā ye vīrā bhṛgumantrabalena te | avaśiṣṭāḥ śivagaṇāḥ śivaṁ śaraṇamāyayuḥ

"Those heroic ganas who had fled from the power of Bhrigu's mantra — the ones who remained — took refuge in Shiva himself."

Verse 5 (shiva.rudra.52.5)

सर्वं निवेदयामासू रुद्रायामिततेजसे । चरित्रं च तथाभूतं सुप्रणम्यादराच्च ते

sarvaṁ nivedayāmāsū rudrāyāmitatejase | caritraṁ ca tathābhūtaṁ supraṇamyādarācca te

"Bowing to him reverently and with due respect, they related to Rudra, of boundless splendor, all that had happened."

Verse 6 (shiva.rudra.52.6)

गणा ऊचुः । देवदेव महादेव पाहि नः शरणागतान् । संशृण्वादरतो नाथ सतीवार्तां च विस्तरात्

gaṇā ūcuḥ | devadeva mahādeva pāhi naḥ śaraṇāgatān | saṁśṛṇvādarato nātha satīvārtāṁ ca vistarāt

The ganas said: "O God of gods, Mahadeva, protect us who have come for refuge. O Lord, hear with attention the full account of Sati."

Verse 7 (shiva.rudra.52.7)

गर्वितेन महेशान दक्षेण सुदुरात्मना । अपमानः कृतः सत्यानादरो निर्जरैस्तथा

garvitena maheśāna dakṣeṇa sudurātmanā | apamānaḥ kṛtaḥ satyānādaro nirjaraistathā

"O great Lord, the arrogant and utterly evil-souled Daksha insulted Sati, and the gods too showed her disrespect."

Verse 8 (shiva.rudra.52.8)

तुभ्यं भागमदान्नो स देवेभ्यश्च प्रदत्तवान् । दुर्वचांस्यवदत्प्रोच्चैर्दुष्टो दक्षः सुगर्वितः

tubhyaṁ bhāgamadānno sa devebhyaśca pradattavān | durvacāṁsyavadatproccairduṣṭo dakṣaḥ sugarvitaḥ

"He gave you no offering-share at all, even while he gave shares to the other gods; and that wicked, arrogant Daksha spoke harsh words aloud besides."

Verse 9 (shiva.rudra.52.9)

ततो दृष्ट्वा न ते भागं यज्ञेऽकुप्यत्सती प्रभो । विनिन्द्य बहुशस्तातमधाक्षीत्स्वतनुं तदा

tato dṛṣṭvā na te bhāgaṁ yajñe'kupyatsatī prabho | vinindya bahuśastātamadhākṣītsvatanuṁ tadā

"O Lord, then, seeing no portion set aside for you at that sacrifice, Sati grew furious; reproaching her own father again and again, she burned her own body then and there."

Verse 10 (shiva.rudra.52.10)

गणास्त्वयुतसङ्ख्याका मृतास्तत्र विलज्जया । स्वाङ्गान्याच्छिद्य शस्त्रैश्च क्रुध्याम ह्यपरे वयम्

gaṇāstvayutasaṅkhyākā mṛtāstatra vilajjayā | svāṅgānyācchidya śastraiśca krudhyāma hyapare vayam

"Overcome with shame at this, ten thousand of our ganas also perished there, cutting their own limbs with their weapons — and the rest of us then grew enraged."

Verse 11 (shiva.rudra.52.11)

तद्यज्ञं ध्वंसितुं वेगात्सन्नद्धास्तु भयावहाः । तिरस्कृता हि भृगुणा स्वप्रभावाद्विरोधिना

tadyajñaṁ dhvaṁsituṁ vegātsannaddhāstu bhayāvahāḥ | tiraskṛtā hi bhṛguṇā svaprabhāvādvirodhinā

"We armed ourselves fearsomely to swiftly destroy that sacrifice, but we were driven back by Bhrigu, through his own opposing power."

Verse 12 (shiva.rudra.52.12)

ते वयं शरणं प्राप्तास्तव विश्वम्भर प्रभो । निर्भयान् कुरु नस्तस्माद् दयमान भवाद्भयात्

te vayaṁ śaraṇaṁ prāptāstava viśvambhara prabho | nirbhayān kuru nastasmād dayamāna bhavādbhayāt

"O sustainer of all, we, those very ganas, have come to your refuge. O compassionate one, free us from this fear."

Verse 13 (shiva.rudra.52.13)

अपमानं विशेषेण तस्मिन् यज्ञे महाप्रभो । दक्षाद्यास्तेऽखिला दुष्टा अकुर्वन् गर्विता अति

apamānaṁ viśeṣeṇa tasmin yajñe mahāprabho | dakṣādyāste'khilā duṣṭā akurvan garvitā ati

"O great Lord, at that sacrifice Daksha and all those utterly wicked, arrogant ones committed a particular and grievous insult."

Verse 14 (shiva.rudra.52.14)

इत्युक्तं निखिलं वृत्तं स्वेषां सत्याश्च शङ्कर । तेषां च मूढबुद्धीनां यथेच्छसि तथा कुरु

ityuktaṁ nikhilaṁ vṛttaṁ sveṣāṁ satyāśca śaṅkara | teṣāṁ ca mūḍhabuddhīnāṁ yathecchasi tathā kuru

"O Shankara, we have told you the whole story of your own ganas and of Sati — now, with those deluded ones, do as you see fit."

Verse 15 (shiva.rudra.52.15)

ब्रह्मोवाच । इत्याकर्ण्य वचस्तस्य स्वगणानां वचः प्रभुः । सस्मार नारदं सर्वं ज्ञातुं तच्चरितं लघु

brahmovāca | ityākarṇya vacastasya svagaṇānāṁ vacaḥ prabhuḥ | sasmāra nāradaṁ sarvaṁ jñātuṁ taccaritaṁ laghu

Brahma said: "Hearing this word from his own ganas, the Lord then called Narada to mind, wishing to learn that whole story swiftly."

Verse 16 (shiva.rudra.52.16)

आगतस्त्वं द्रुतं तत्र देवर्षे दिव्यदर्शनः । प्रणम्य शङ्करं भक्त्या साञ्जलिस्तत्र तस्थिवान्

āgatastvaṁ drutaṁ tatra devarṣe divyadarśanaḥ | praṇamya śaṅkaraṁ bhaktyā sāñjalistatra tasthivān

"You, O divine sage of heavenly sight, then came there swiftly, and, bowing to Shankara with devotion, stood there with joined palms."

Verse 17 (shiva.rudra.52.17)

त्वां प्रशस्याथ स स्वामी सत्या वार्तां च पृष्टवान् । दक्षयज्ञगताया वै परं च चरितं तथा

tvāṁ praśasyātha sa svāmī satyā vārtāṁ ca pṛṣṭavān | dakṣayajñagatāyā vai paraṁ ca caritaṁ tathā

"That Lord, having praised you, then asked you about the news of Sati, who had gone to Daksha's sacrifice, and the further course of what had happened."

Verse 18 (shiva.rudra.52.18)

पृष्टेन शम्भुना तात त्वयाश्वेव शिवात्मना । तत्सर्वं कथितं वृत्तं जातं दक्षाध्वरे हि यत्

pṛṣṭena śambhunā tāta tvayāśveva śivātmanā | tatsarvaṁ kathitaṁ vṛttaṁ jātaṁ dakṣādhvare hi yat

"O son, when you were thus questioned by Shambhu, one with Shiva's own self, you at once related to him everything that had happened at Daksha's sacrifice."

Verse 19 (shiva.rudra.52.19)

तदाकर्ण्येश्वरो वाक्यं मुने तत् त्वन्मुखोदितम् । चुकोपातिद्रुतं रुद्रो महारौद्रपराक्रमः

tadākarṇyeśvaro vākyaṁ mune tat tvanmukhoditam | cukopātidrutaṁ rudro mahāraudraparākramaḥ

"Hearing those words, O sage, spoken from your own mouth, the Lord Rudra, of terrible and fierce power, grew enraged in an instant."

Verse 20 (shiva.rudra.52.20)

उत्पाट्यैकां जटां रुद्रो लोकसंहारकारकः । आस्फालयामास रुषा पर्वतस्य तदोपरि

utpāṭyaikāṁ jaṭāṁ rudro lokasaṁhārakārakaḥ | āsphālayāmāsa ruṣā parvatasya tadopari

"Rudra, the destroyer of the worlds, tore out one of his matted locks and, in fury, dashed it down upon a mountain."

Verse 21 (shiva.rudra.52.21)

तोदनाच्च द्विधा भूता सा जटा च मुने प्रभोः । सम्बभूव महारावो महाप्रलयभीषणः

todanācca dvidhā bhūtā sā jaṭā ca mune prabhoḥ | sambabhūva mahārāvo mahāpralayabhīṣaṇaḥ

"From that blow, O sage, the Lord's matted lock split into two, and there arose a mighty roar, as terrible as the great dissolution of the world."

Verse 22 (shiva.rudra.52.22)

तज्जटायाः समुद्भूतो वीरभद्रो महाबलः । पूर्वभागेन देवर्षे महाभीमो गणाग्रणीः

tajjaṭāyāḥ samudbhūto vīrabhadro mahābalaḥ | pūrvabhāgena devarṣe mahābhīmo gaṇāgraṇīḥ

"From the front portion of that very lock, O divine sage, was born the mighty Virabhadra, most fearsome, foremost among the ganas."

Verse 23 (shiva.rudra.52.23)

स भूमिं विश्वतो वृत्य चात्यतिष्ठद्दशाङ्गुलम् । प्रलयानलसङ्काशः प्रोन्नतो दोःसहस्रवान्

sa bhūmiṁ viśvato vṛtya cātyatiṣṭhaddaśāṅgulam | pralayānalasaṅkāśaḥ pronnato doḥsahasravān

"He stood, towering all around, ten fingers taller than the whole earth — blazing like the fire of universal dissolution, exalted, and possessed of a thousand arms."

Verse 24 (shiva.rudra.52.24)

कोपनिःश्वासतस्तत्र महारुद्रस्य चेशितुः । जातं ज्वराणां शतकं सन्निपातास्त्रयोदश

kopaniḥśvāsatastatra mahārudrasya ceśituḥ | jātaṁ jvarāṇāṁ śatakaṁ sannipātāstrayodaśa

"There, from the wrathful breath of the great Lord Rudra, a hundred kinds of fever and thirteen sannipātas (compound feverish disorders) came into being."

Verse 25 (shiva.rudra.52.25)

महाकाली समुत्पन्ना तज्जटापरभागतः । महाभयङ्करा तात भूतकोटिभिरावृता

mahākālī samutpannā tajjaṭāparabhāgataḥ | mahābhayaṅkarā tāta bhūtakoṭibhirāvṛtā

"O son, from the other portion of that very lock arose the greatly terrifying Mahakali, encircled by tens of millions of spirits."

Verse 26 (shiva.rudra.52.26)

सर्वे मूर्तिधराः क्रूराः ज्वरा लोकभयङ्कराः । स्वतेजसा प्रज्वलन्तो दहन्त इव सर्वतः

sarve mūrtidharāḥ krūrāḥ jvarā lokabhayaṅkarāḥ | svatejasā prajvalanto dahanta iva sarvataḥ

"All those embodied, cruel fever-deities, terrifying to the worlds, blazed with their own fire, seeming to burn everything on every side."

Verse 27 (shiva.rudra.52.27)

अथ वीरो वीरभद्रः प्रणम्य परमेश्वरम् । कृताञ्जलिपुटः प्राह वाक्यं वाक्यविशारदः

atha vīro vīrabhadraḥ praṇamya parameśvaram | kṛtāñjalipuṭaḥ prāha vākyaṁ vākyaviśāradaḥ

"Then the hero Virabhadra, bowing to the supreme Lord, and joining his palms, being skilled in speech, spoke these words."

Verse 28 (shiva.rudra.52.28)

वीरभद्र उवाच । महारुद्र महारौद्र सोमसूर्याग्निलोचन । किं कर्तव्यं मया कार्यं शीघ्रमाज्ञापय प्रभो

vīrabhadra uvāca | mahārudra mahāraudra somasūryāgnilocana | kiṁ kartavyaṁ mayā kāryaṁ śīghramājñāpaya prabho

Virabhadra said: "O great Rudra, O terrible one, whose eyes are the moon, the sun, and fire! O Lord, what must I do — command me quickly."

Verse 29 (shiva.rudra.52.29)

शोषणीयाः किमीशान क्षणार्धेनैव सिन्धवः । पेषणीयाः किमीशान क्षणार्धेनैव पर्वताः

śoṣaṇīyāḥ kimīśāna kṣaṇārdhenaiva sindhavaḥ | peṣaṇīyāḥ kimīśāna kṣaṇārdhenaiva parvatāḥ

"O Ishana, shall I dry up the oceans in a mere half-instant? O Ishana, shall I grind the mountains to dust in a mere half-instant?"

Verse 30 (shiva.rudra.52.30)

क्षणेन भस्मसात्कुर्यां ब्रह्माण्डमुत किं हर । क्षणेन भस्मसात्कुर्यां सुरान्वा किं मुनीश्वरान्

kṣaṇena bhasmasātkuryāṁ brahmāṇḍamuta kiṁ hara | kṣaṇena bhasmasātkuryāṁ surānvā kiṁ munīśvarān

"O Hara, shall I reduce the whole cosmic egg to ashes in an instant? Shall I reduce the gods or the great sages to ashes in an instant?"

Verse 31 (shiva.rudra.52.31)

व्याश्वासः सर्वलोकानां किमु कार्यो हि शङ्कर । कर्तव्यं किमुतेशान सर्वप्राणिविहिंसनम्

vyāśvāsaḥ sarvalokānāṁ kimu kāryo hi śaṅkara | kartavyaṁ kimuteśāna sarvaprāṇivihiṁsanam

"O Shankara, must all the worlds be reassured? O Ishana, must all living beings be struck down?"

Verse 32 (shiva.rudra.52.32)

ममाशक्यं न कुत्रापि त्वत्प्रसादान्महेश्वर । पराक्रमेण मत्तुल्यो न भूतो न भविष्यति

mamāśakyaṁ na kutrāpi tvatprasādānmaheśvara | parākrameṇa mattulyo na bhūto na bhaviṣyati

"O great Lord, by your grace nothing is impossible for me — in valor none has been my equal, nor shall be."

Verse 33 (shiva.rudra.52.33)

यत्र यत्कार्यमुद्दिश्य प्रेषयिष्यसि मां प्रभो । तत्कार्यं साधयाम्येव सत्वरं त्वत्प्रसादतः

yatra yatkāryamuddiśya preṣayiṣyasi māṁ prabho | tatkāryaṁ sādhayāmyeva satvaraṁ tvatprasādataḥ

"O Lord, wherever, and whatever the task you send me for, I shall accomplish it swiftly by your grace."

Verse 34 (shiva.rudra.52.34)

क्षुद्रास्तरन्ति लोकाब्धिं शासनाच्छङ्करस्य ते । हरातोऽहं न किं तर्तुं महापत्सागरं क्षमः

kṣudrāstaranti lokābdhiṁ śāsanācchaṅkarasya te | harāto'haṁ na kiṁ tartuṁ mahāpatsāgaraṁ kṣamaḥ

"By your rule even the humble cross the ocean of this world — so shall I, O Hara, not be able to cross a mere ocean of calamity?"

Verse 35 (shiva.rudra.52.35)

त्वत्प्रेषिततृणेनापि महत्कार्यमयत्नतः । क्षणेन शक्यते कर्तुं शङ्करात्र न संशयः

tvatpreṣitatṛṇenāpi mahatkāryamayatnataḥ | kṣaṇena śakyate kartuṁ śaṅkarātra na saṁśayaḥ

"Even a mere straw, sent by you, could accomplish a great task effortlessly in an instant, O Shankara — of this there is no doubt."

Verse 36 (shiva.rudra.52.36)

लीलामात्रेण ते शम्भो कार्यं यद्यपि सिध्यति । तथाप्यहं प्रेषणीयो तवैवानुग्रहो ह्ययम्

līlāmātreṇa te śambho kāryaṁ yadyapi sidhyati | tathāpyahaṁ preṣaṇīyo tavaivānugraho hyayam

"O Shambhu, though this task could be accomplished by your mere sport, still, that I am the one sent to do it is itself your grace upon me."

Verse 37 (shiva.rudra.52.37)

शक्तिरेतादृशी शम्भो ममापि त्वदनुग्रहात् । विना शक्तिर्न कस्यापि शङ्कर त्वदनुग्रहात्

śaktiretādṛśī śambho mamāpi tvadanugrahāt | vinā śaktirna kasyāpi śaṅkara tvadanugrahāt

"O Shambhu, this power of mine too exists only through your favor — O Shankara, without your grace, no one has any power at all."

Verse 38 (shiva.rudra.52.38)

त्वदाज्ञया विना कोऽपि तृणादीनपि वस्तुतः । नैव चालयितुं शक्तः सत्यमेतन्न संशयः

tvadājñayā vinā ko'pi tṛṇādīnapi vastutaḥ | naiva cālayituṁ śaktaḥ satyametanna saṁśayaḥ

"Without your command, truly, no one is able to so much as move a blade of grass — this is the plain truth, beyond doubt."

Verse 39 (shiva.rudra.52.39)

शम्भो नियम्याः सर्वेऽपि देवाद्यास्ते महेश्वर । तथैवाहं नियम्यस्ते नियन्तुः सर्वदेहिनाम्

śambho niyamyāḥ sarve'pi devādyāste maheśvara | tathaivāhaṁ niyamyaste niyantuḥ sarvadehinām

"O Shambhu, great Lord, all beings, gods and the rest, are ruled by you — so too am I, ruled by you, the controller of all embodied beings."

Verse 40 (shiva.rudra.52.40)

प्रणतोऽस्मि महादेव भूयोऽपि प्रणतोऽस्म्यहम् । प्रेषय स्वेष्टसिद्ध्यर्थं मामद्य हर सत्वरम्

praṇato'smi mahādeva bhūyo'pi praṇato'smyaham | preṣaya sveṣṭasiddhyarthaṁ māmadya hara satvaram

"O Mahadeva, I bow to you; again and again I bow to you. O Hara, send me now, at once, to accomplish your own desired purpose."

Verse 41 (shiva.rudra.52.41)

स्पन्दोऽपि जायते शम्भोऽसव्याङ्गानां मुहुर्मुहुः । भविष्यत्यद्य विजयो मामतः प्रेषय प्रभो

spando'pi jāyate śambho'savyāṅgānāṁ muhurmuhuḥ | bhaviṣyatyadya vijayo māmataḥ preṣaya prabho

"O Shambhu, a tremor keeps arising, again and again, in the right side of my limbs — today victory shall surely be mine; therefore send me, O Lord."

Verse 42 (shiva.rudra.52.42)

हर्षोत्साहविशेषोऽपि जायते मम कश्चन । शम्भो त्वत्पादकमले संसक्तश्च मनो मम

harṣotsāhaviśeṣo'pi jāyate mama kaścana | śambho tvatpādakamale saṁsaktaśca mano mama

"A particular joy and eagerness also rises in me, O Shambhu; and my mind remains fixed upon your lotus feet."

Verse 43 (shiva.rudra.52.43)

भविष्यति प्रतिपदं शुभसन्तानसन्ततिः

bhaviṣyati pratipadaṁ śubhasantānasantatiḥ

"At every step there shall follow a continuous line of auspicious increase."

Verse 44 (shiva.rudra.52.44)

तस्यैव विजयो नित्यं तस्यैव शुभमन्वहम् । यस्य शम्भौ दृढा भक्तिस्त्वयि शोभनसंश्रये

tasyaiva vijayo nityaṁ tasyaiva śubhamanvaham | yasya śambhau dṛḍhā bhaktistvayi śobhanasaṁśraye

"His alone is victory always, his alone is auspiciousness every day, whose devotion to Shambhu — to you, refuge of all that is good — is firm."

Verse 45 (shiva.rudra.52.45)

ब्रह्मोवाच । इत्युक्तं तद्वचः श्रुत्वा सन्तुष्टो मङ्गलापतिः । वीरभद्र जयेति त्वं प्रोक्ताशीः प्राह तं पुनः

brahmovāca | ityuktaṁ tadvacaḥ śrutvā santuṣṭo maṅgalāpatiḥ | vīrabhadra jayeti tvaṁ proktāśīḥ prāha taṁ punaḥ

Brahma said: "Hearing these words thus spoken, the Lord of all auspiciousness was pleased, and having pronounced the blessing, 'Victory to you, O Virabhadra,' he spoke to him once more."

Verse 46 (shiva.rudra.52.46)

महेश्वर उवाच । शृणु मद्वचनं तात वीरभद्र सुचेतसा । करणीयं प्रयत्नेन तद् द्रुतं मे प्रतोषकम्

maheśvara uvāca | śṛṇu madvacanaṁ tāta vīrabhadra sucetasā | karaṇīyaṁ prayatnena tad drutaṁ me pratoṣakam

Maheshvara said: "Listen, son Virabhadra, to my word with a clear mind — the task that will please me, you must accomplish swiftly and with all effort."

Verse 47 (shiva.rudra.52.47)

यागं कर्तुं समुद्युक्तो दक्षो विधिसुतः खलः । मद्विरोधी विशेषेण महागर्वोऽबुधोऽधुना

yāgaṁ kartuṁ samudyukto dakṣo vidhisutaḥ khalaḥ | madvirodhī viśeṣeṇa mahāgarvo'budho'dhunā

"That wicked Daksha, son of Vidhi, is bent on performing his sacrifice — he who has now become my particular enemy, greatly arrogant, and utterly without understanding."

Verse 48 (shiva.rudra.52.48)

तन्मखं भस्मसात्कृत्वा सयागपरिवारकम् । पुनरायाहि मत्स्थानं सत्वरं गणसत्तम

tanmakhaṁ bhasmasātkṛtvā sayāgaparivārakam | punarāyāhi matsthānaṁ satvaraṁ gaṇasattama

"Reduce that sacrifice, together with all its ritual paraphernalia, to ashes — and then, O best of ganas, return swiftly to my abode."

Verse 49 (shiva.rudra.52.49)

सुरा भवन्तु गन्धर्वा यक्षा वान्ये च केचन । तानप्यद्यैव सहसा भस्मसात्कुरु सत्वरम्

surā bhavantu gandharvā yakṣā vānye ca kecana | tānapyadyaiva sahasā bhasmasātkuru satvaram

"Whoever may be there — gods, gandharvas, yakshas, or any others — reduce them too, at once, this very day, to ashes."

Verse 50 (shiva.rudra.52.50)

तत्रास्तु विष्णुर्ब्रह्मा वा शचीशो वा यमोऽपि वा । अपि चाद्यैव तान्सर्वान्पातयस्व प्रयत्नतः

tatrāstu viṣṇurbrahmā vā śacīśo vā yamo'pi vā | api cādyaiva tānsarvānpātayasva prayatnataḥ

"Should Vishnu be there, or Brahma, or Indra, or even Yama — strike down all of them too, this very day, without fail."

Verse 51 (shiva.rudra.52.51)

सुरा भवन्तु गन्धर्वा यक्षा वान्ये च केचन । तानप्यद्यैव सहसा भस्मसात्कुरु सत्वरम्

surā bhavantu gandharvā yakṣā vānye ca kecana | tānapyadyaiva sahasā bhasmasātkuru satvaram

"Whoever may be there — gods, gandharvas, yakshas, or any others — reduce them too, at once, this very day, to ashes."

Verse 52 (shiva.rudra.52.52)

दधीचिकृतमुल्लङ्घ्य शपथं मयि तत्र ये । तिष्ठन्ति ते प्रयत्नेन ज्वालनीयास्त्वया ध्रुवम्

dadhīcikṛtamullaṅghya śapathaṁ mayi tatra ye | tiṣṭhanti te prayatnena jvālanīyāstvayā dhruvam

"Those who stand there having transgressed the oath that Dadhichi swore on my behalf — them you must, with effort, surely set aflame."

Verse 53 (shiva.rudra.52.53)

प्रमथाश्चागमिष्यन्ति यदि विष्ण्वादयो भ्रमात् । नानाकर्षणमन्त्रेण ज्वालयानीय सत्वरम्

pramathāścāgamiṣyanti yadi viṣṇvādayo bhramāt | nānākarṣaṇamantreṇa jvālayānīya satvaram

"And if the Pramathas — or Vishnu and the others, deluded — should come there, draw them in with various binding mantras and burn them at once."

Verse 54 (shiva.rudra.52.54)

ये तत्रोल्लङ्घ्य शपथं मदीयं गर्विताः स्थिताः । ते हि मद्द्रोहिणोऽतस्तान् ज्वालयानलमालया

ye tatrollaṅghya śapathaṁ madīyaṁ garvitāḥ sthitāḥ | te hi maddrohiṇo'tastān jvālayānalamālayā

"Those who stand there, arrogant, having transgressed my oath — they are indeed my very enemies; therefore burn them with a garland of fire."

Verse 55 (shiva.rudra.52.55)

सपत्नीकान्ससारांश्च दक्षयागस्थलस्थितान् । प्रज्वाल्य भस्मसात्कृत्वा पुनरायाहि सत्वरम्

sapatnīkānsasārāṁśca dakṣayāgasthalasthitān | prajvālya bhasmasātkṛtvā punarāyāhi satvaram

"Having burned to ashes all those stationed at Daksha's sacrificial ground, together with their wives and their kin, return swiftly once more."

Verse 56 (shiva.rudra.52.56)

तत्र त्वयि गते देवा विश्वाद्या अपि सादरम् । स्तोष्यन्ति त्वां तदाप्याशु ज्वालया ज्वालयैव तान्

tatra tvayi gate devā viśvādyā api sādaram | stoṣyanti tvāṁ tadāpyāśu jvālayā jvālayaiva tān

"And if, when you arrive there, the gods headed by the Vishvedevas begin reverently to praise you even then, burn them too at once with your very flame."

Verse 57 (shiva.rudra.52.57)

देवानपि कृतद्रोहान् ज्वालामालासमाकुलैः । ज्वालय ज्वलनैः शीघ्रं माध्यायाध्यायपालकम्

devānapi kṛtadrohān jvālāmālāsamākulaiḥ | jvālaya jvalanaiḥ śīghraṁ mādhyāyādhyāyapālakam

"Even those gods who have committed this betrayal — surround them with garlands of blazing fire and burn them swiftly, and the guardian of that observance as well."

Verse 58 (shiva.rudra.52.58)

दक्षादीन्सकलांस्तत्र सपत्नीकान्सबान्धवान् । प्रज्वाल्य वीर दक्षं नु सलीलं सलिलं पिब

dakṣādīnsakalāṁstatra sapatnīkānsabāndhavān | prajvālya vīra dakṣaṁ nu salīlaṁ salilaṁ piba

"Having burned Daksha and all the others there, together with their wives and kinsmen, O hero, then drink water at your leisure."

Verse 59 (shiva.rudra.52.59)

ब्रह्मोवाच । इत्युक्त्वा रोषताम्राक्षो वेदमर्यादपालकः । विरराम महावीरं कालारिः सकलेश्वरः

brahmovāca | ityuktvā roṣatāmrākṣo vedamaryādapālakaḥ | virarāma mahāvīraṁ kālāriḥ sakaleśvaraḥ

Brahma said: "Having said this, Shiva — the guardian of the Veda's boundaries, the enemy of Death, the ruler of all — his eyes red with fury, fell silent before that great hero."
